declined invite
the salesman / recruiter x gn!reader
the mysterious man pays you a visit after you do not call the card number
Tumblr media
warnings: threats. manipulation. salesman takes a special interest to you. no gender for reader specified.
Tumblr media
you had never been one for public transportation.
its been a rough week...rent overdue, your job barely covering expenses, and an argument with your sister kim about your financial irresponsibility.
tonight, you found yourself sitting at the edge of a subway platform, the fluorescent lights overhead flickering like they, too, were barely holding on.
a sigh left your lips as you rubbed your temples, trying to push away the headache forming behind your eyes. that’s when you sensed someone sitting down next to you.
at first, you did not mind. its the subway after all, you cannot tell anyone to move somewhere else.
however, you started to feel eyes on you.. then,
"excuse me."
you looked up, blinking in confusion at the well-dressed man sitting beside you. a sleek suit, a warm but eerily calculated smile.
he held up a briefcase, setting it on the seat beside him with an effortless grace.
"would you like to play a game?"
you frowned.
"excuse me?"
you didn't have time for salesman workers who frequent the streets to cheat on their wives at home. you've heard about those situations.
however, the man pulled out a stack of folded papers.before you could question it, he flipped them open, revealing two neat stacks of blue and red ddakji tiles.
"i'll make it simple," he said smoothly, tilting his head.
"we take turns throwing these, trying to flip the other player's tile. if you win, you get a hundred thousand won. if i win… well, you owe me your body. nothing vulgar, just a slap on the cheek."
you scoffed, shaking your head.
"i'm not interested."
"are you sure?"
the salesman’s eyes twinkled.
"it’s free money. surely, you have nothing to lose."
your arms crossed instinctively.
“i don’t play games with strangers.”
he chuckled, shuffling the tiles between his fingers before setting them down neatly.
"oh, but you do play games. just not ones you win."
your body stiffened.
"what the hell is that supposed to mean?"
"you gamble. not with money...because you don't have any...but with your chances in life. you take risks constantly, trusting people you shouldn't, spending time in places you shouldn't."
he tapped his knee, mockingly thoughtful.
"like the shady bar down the street. the one you frequent when you’re avoiding your older sister's lectures. whiskey neat, always."
your breath hitched.
"or that friend you loaned money to last year. the one who promised to pay you back but never did. how much was it? a million won?"
your heart pounded.
“who the hell are you?”
he ignored your question, his smile unwavering.
"you’re not a very lucky person, are you?"
your throat went dry.
"i don't want to play your stupid game."
he exhaled dramatically.
"what a shame."
he began packing up the tiles with deliberate slowness, but then he pulled out a sleek brown card, sliding it toward you.
"but if you ever change your mind, call this number."
you stared at it, hesitating before picking it up. embossed in the center was a symbol of three shapes.
a circle, a triangle, and a square.
no name. no details. just a number.
you swallowed thickly, then shoved the card into your pocket.
you needed to get out of here.
now.
you spent the next few days holed up at your older sister's house, avoiding anything that felt remotely like a coincidence.
you didn’t leave, didn’t touch your phone unless absolutely necessary.
kim, of course, noticed.
"y/n," she called from the kitchen, hands on her hips.
"what’s going on with you?"
you forced a laugh.
"what do you mean?"
"you’ve been acting paranoid ever since you got here. jumping at noises, locking the door twice. are you in trouble?"
"no,"
you lied, avoiding her gaze.
"i just… needed a break from everything."
kim studied you with a skeptical look, but before she could press further, her phone buzzed.
"well, i have to run some errands,"
she said, still eyeing you.
"please don’t burn the house down while i’m gone."
"yeah, yeah,"
you muttered, waving her off.
the moment the door shut, silence settled over the house.
you exhaled, rubbing your temples. maybe you were overreacting.
maybe that man was just a really creepy con artist.
then came the knock.
you stilled.
it was soft at first. then a second knock, louder.
probably a neighbor, you thought. they were always borrowing something from your sister. you rose from the couch and walked to the door, fingers curling around the knob.
the second you opened it...your blood ran cold.
the salesman.
his smile widened.
"hello again, y/n."
panic seized your chest. you moved to slam the door, but he caught it with an iron grip, slipping inside before you could react.
"whoa there," he chuckled.
"no need to be rude."
"get the hell out of my house!"
you hissed, backing away.
he took a step forward, hands slipping into his pockets.
"i was just wondering why you never called the number."
you gawked at him.
"because i don’t have a death wish?!"
his grin didn’t falter.
"you think calling the number means death?"
"yes!"
your voice rose.
"look, i don’t know what you are or who you work for, but i’m not interested in being kidnapped, sold off, or whatever the hell this is!"
he hummed, amusement glinting in his eyes.
"funny. most people say that before they change their minds."
"i won’t."
he tilted his head.
"are you sure?"
silence stretched between you. the air felt suffocating.
then, he leaned in slightly.
"you have no job. you have no savings. you owe money to people you don’t even remember. lets not get started on your sister? well…"
he smirked.
"you’re getting a little too comfortable depending on her, aren’t you?"
you swallowed hard.
"there’s a way out, y/n,"
he said, voice smooth as silk.
"no more struggling. no more scraping by. just one game. and if you win… you’ll never have to worry again."
you shook your head, but doubt wormed into your mind.
"is this prostitution?"
he shook his head no.
"its not. but y/n, you wouldn’t be here if you weren’t considering it,"
he continued.
"you wouldn't be so afraid if you didn’t believe...deep down...that this might be your only chance."
your hands trembled.
"why are you telling me all this?"
his smirk widened.
"because i need all 456 players."
your pulse thundered in your ears.
he stepped back, as if giving you space to breathe.
"think about it," he said simply, turning toward the door.
"but don't take too long. opportunities like this don’t come twice."
with that, he walked out, shutting the door behind him as if he had never been there at all.
your legs nearly gave out.
for a long time, you stood frozen, staring at the door.
slowly, shakily, you pulled out the card from your pocket, your fingers hovering over the numbers.
you inhaled sharply.
then you called.

Special Offer for Tumblr Users!
Hey all! So I don't normally do this but I'm feeling kind of desperate and tumblr seems to be the best outlet for that, and everyone on this platform has been so dang supportive. So here goes.
Husband and I are in desperate financial need. We're both looking for full-time jobs, but he is going to be going back to school and that puts the responsibility on me to get not only a full-time remote job that I am qualified for, but it needs to make a certain amount (read: six figures) if we want to keep the house we just bought. This is not impossible as I am qualified for jobs like this, but with the economy the way it is now and the fact we just fuckin went to war, it's an uphill battle.
My Etsy orders have slowed down from me being able to profit between $200-$500 a month (not enough to live on, but it helps pay the bills) to profiting less than $100 a month (not even worth the amount of time and effort I put in daily). We're in crazy debt and my husband's unemployment is set to run out in August. It's been keeping us just barely afloat, but it's getting scary.
I'm not asking for a handout. But if any of you have seen my work and gone "Wow, I would love [insert character here] done by them", or "I would love the pattern for [insert character here]" now is the time to reach out! I will be giving generous discounts (as far as I can afford) to anyone who reaches out here.
This is not just for characters I've done before. I'd honestly actually prefer to do new characters or even OCs. If you are the first person to request a character I haven't done, that's an extra discount! If you don't need the doll before November, that's also another discount! Last discount I will give: if you want a character from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, there will be an additional discount. All of these discounts will stack.
You can reach out through tumblr messages, or, if you feel safer doing financial transactions through something that protects you more than venmo, message me on etsy saying you saw my tumblr post and I will apply the discount there.
TLDR:
Am currently in dire financial straits, so: discounts for tumblr users, discounts for characters I haven't made or OCs, discounts for orders you don't need before November, and discounts for orders of characters from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33-- and all of these discounts stack! Message me here or on etsy!

The Key
This was one of my first 'What if?' AU ideas I had since back in 2013! I finally had the motivation to revamp, re-edit, and add additional scenes to make it more fun. This AU was about if the TFP Jasper kids had different life backgrounds, and still met the Autobots and helped them fight against the Decepticons and MECH. This story: 'What If' Jack had worked for MECH?
Words: 4162
Characters: Jack Darby, Optimus Prime, Ratchet, Silas Bishop
The Key
Legend:
"Roll Out!"- Talk
What did you say? - Thought
"*Can you read me now?*"- Comm-link and radio
"Remember, Darby!" called Vince from below. "I want this place spotless when I get back in the morning!"
"Yes, sir."
The dark-haired teen just watched the red head twit march out the hanger door, scoffed moments after the door closed and resumed mopping the upper platform. He dragged the mop with hard strokes as he muttered to himself.
"'I'm head of Junior Division, so you gotta do what I say. It's 'have to do as I say', sir. 'Like I care what you think, Darby, just do your work! Clean up this place for tomorrow, it's all you're good for. Pfft! Like I want your job."
Jack walks back to his mop bucket to ring out the wet yarn, gagging at the dirty result. He paused and looked over the side rail down at the motionless figure of metal laid out below him. The giant robot humanoid was shut off for the night, placed back on its charging berth, and cleaned (That was part the Junior Divisions work, with Jack being forced to do all the cleaning) for tomorrows next combat session. Ever since he had seen it in action the first week it was brought in, he was in complete awe of it. His boss, Director Silas, had brought it from some sort of skirmish against an unknown faction. He said it was a new trophy that M.E.C.H would use for their goals or whatever BS he spouted.
Immediately after bringing it to base, they began their combat tests for their remote-control systems. Jack wasn't allowed on site, but he had a perfect view from his workstation, captivated at how such a great lumbering machine could move with such precision, power, and fluid movement that made him wish Silas had never found the thing. Heck, he even witnessed the discovery that it can transform its hands into swords that could cut through titanium and even some sort of energy cannons that can blast through the most armored shields!
Despite the full control the scientists 'say' they had on it, Jack never understood why only Silas was needed to pilot it remotely or why they had to strap it down with heavy duty strappings.
Putting the mop handle against the railing, he folded his arms to lean on the rail and looked at the shielded face of the robot. Its knight-like helmeted head gleamed under the lights, he admired the blue and silver shine that seemed interwoven with the red armored torso and the lithe strong legs and blue peds gave it a majestic presence. A true masterpiece of robotic engineering, too bad it would be used for a horrific purpose under Silas.
On one bright side, whenever Jack got the night shift in the hanger, he'd would find himself talking to it. He didn't quite understand why he did so, but he had heard once anyone working in a silent environment sometimes liked having to talk to someone, especially when who or what you're talking to doesn't mind your venting.
"Well, big guy, you were quite a mess earlier. I had to get the special cleaner to get all that dirt out of you, like it'll matter; one left over speck and I'm up to my hair in 'punishment detail' and have to clean you all over again. 'Why flip burgers for a living when you could get high pay from M.E.C.H', flipping burgers don't require all that expectation, and I could deal with pushy customers to Vince's cawing," the boy laid his head on his arms.
"But you, some kind of alien tech for us greedy humans to use for God knows what. Did you know they're building a copy of you in another hanger? I thought one of you was enough, but not when it comes with Director Bishop. I just think... maybe you weren't made for combat, you could probably be something like an automated gardener or librarian on whatever planet you came from. Your swords could be your trowels or the... cannons are actually... uh... bug repellents? Must be some big bad bugs for something like that if you even have plants on your planet. Anyway, we could use a giant gardener..."
The boy stopped for a few moments then hung his forehead on the folded arms and sighed harshly.
"I am a loser… I'm talking to an inanimate alien robot about gardening. Sigh, I think I'm going to quit and get therapy," he put a hand through his hair and looked back at his silent audience. "…but it won't help mom, she's got enough problems, 'just have to keep pushing forward' she always says. And if I work hard enough, maybe I'll find my perfect place out there. Not a deal for you, buddy, you've got your fate already laid out. Wish I could do something, hate to see something great like you get tarnished."
Jack straightened up and grabbed the mop. "Well, back to work."
He picks up the mop bucket and carries it down the ramp to the main floor and begins mopping again. He made a sweep around the berth when he spotted something shining on the floor in the dim hanger lights.
Putting the handle against the berth, he squatted down the take a closer look.
At first, he thought it was a jumbled mess of leftover wire. Yet, as he looked at it the more, it seemed to be a solid form of a masterfully crafted metal key with gleaming blue accents.
"Huh," he picked it up, stood up, and turned it over in his hand. Silver and blue seemed to twinkle in the lights that gave it a more… alien look. Jack looked up at the figure. “Guess that last field test finally knocked something off.”
He hesitates, he should really call in and inform the scientists about the piece, but they'll probably blame him for the damage instead and cut his pay. Anyway, the base was so fortified they never bothered to put cameras in the hanger so, what the heck. He took off his shoes, so not to leave shoe prints, jumped onto the berth, tenderly grabbed the red armor of the closest arm and began climbing up. He made sure his hands gripped where he wouldn't cut himself, and reached the chest area and sat up on his knees and looked around for some…
There.
An opening in between the windshield-like chest plates revealed a spot that had the same outline as the key-like object. Casting one last look at the strange key, Jack places it within the area, with some kind of locks surrounding the opening, and clicked the key in accordingly. He paused to see if something would happen, but after a few moments there was nothing. The black-haired teen straightened back up, placed his hands on his hips and nodded in accomplishment.
"Now you're back with all your pieces."
Feeling a little satisfied with himself Jack climbed back down, never noticing the key in its slot glow blue along with the opened two optics from the robot's head that followed the boy's decent from its body and berth.
Putting his shoes back on Jack continued his mopping, kicking the mop bucket to the next area; its squeaking wheels echoed in the hanger, making the teen cringe at the noise. After ringing out the dirty water from the mop head, he paused at a sudden metal groan echoing in the building. He shrugged after a second, having been used to the groans of the metal hanger that would echo in the night from the heat of Nevada sun of the day, and continued his task…
Thump…
He stopped, feeling the sudden vibration from the floor. He blinked. Was there a night combat training scheduled tonight, and Vince didn't tell me? He is 'head of the Junior Division' after all. He shook his head and went back to his mopping.
Thump… Whirl… Clang…
Jack stopped and straightened his back. That…didn't sound like a tank bomb aftershock.
Thump-klink… Thump-klink…
No tank bomb would go off in a pattern that sounded like foot-
Jack slowly looked into his mop bucket to see the ripples of the water with each vibration, and he shook as the sound crescendos.
Thump-clang, Thump-clang... THUMP-BOOM!
His grip on the mop handle tightened when the sound stopped, the hairs on the back of his neck bristled when he noticed the new shadow on the floor and the looming presence over him.
Don't turn, just run, don't turn, just run, don't turn, JUST…
Sadly, for Jack, his body didn't listen as he slowly turned around and all the air stopped in his throat as he saw the blue pillar-like legs before him; behind them, an empty berth with loose 'cut' strappings. He tilted his head up, and up, and up until his wide blue-gray eyes connect with the bright blue optics looking down at him.
The two stared at each other for a moment that felt like an eternity, until Jack finally took a soft, shaky breath when the giant blue helmeted head tilted slightly.
White knuckled with his grip on the mop handle, Jack slowly moved backwards toward the hanger doors, more towards the direction of the alarm button right next to the door controls. The blue optics narrowed (in amusement, maybe?) at this action and moved a large hand toward him. Jack finally turned around and scrabbled into a sprint, the mop clattered noisily on the floor when he dropped it and reached for the button.
He cried out in dismay when he got sudden vertigo from being scooped up and held in a sturdy, and surprising gentle, grip of the metal hand around his body. He tried to force the fingers to release him and struggled as he tried to call out to the outside.
"HELP! SOMEONE HELP! The robot is-!"
"I'm afraid whatever help available is being withheld and distracted at the moment."
The human stopped at the sound of the low baritone voice of a deity. He turned his head to the robot head and his jaw dropped when the mask shield suddenly retracted to reveal its true face. A silver face that bore a small gentle smile at the boy's reactions.
"But you need not fear me Jackson Darby, for I have no intention to harm you, or anyone of this base," then it frowned with brow plates, Jack noticed, over the optics that glanced at a certain direction. "Though there are some I'm reconsidering."
Jack's mind just locked up at this dream, or was it really a dream? The alien robot, no, this intelligent being, did not just…
"… You can talk, and you know my name…" the teen spoke softly with a staccato at the end.
The blue optics looked back at him, making him flinch, and then the metal being spoke in a serious tone.
"I know more than you believe Jackson, and though I would enjoy to finally have a decent conversation, we haven't much time and I have a more pressing question to ask you."
"Me?" the boy pointed to himself in shock.
"Where is the facility that holds the copy of my frame?"
"Uh… Oh yeah, that thing," Jack stammered as he pointed to the doors. "Just out this hanger and to the one down on the left."
Jack suddenly had to hold onto the metal thumb as the giant moved with surprising grace. The being then moved his free hand toward the door controls and Jack was amazed to see a shock coming from a finger and the controls activated the doors to fully open. They walked out onto the main tarmac, where he noticed that the whole base was quiet, except for some commotion at a far distance; not even a perimeter guard was seen from his elevated height. Wasn't this supposed to be the most fortified base in the country? If Jack was uneasy before, his was internally panicked now. He looked back up nervously at the blank face of his captor as they moved left to its next destination.
"Uh, will you let me go now?" the boy tried to plead. "I promise not to tell anyone what happened, I'll probably get fired anyway at the end of all this."
"The moment I release you will be when my mission is done," came the cryptic replay that had Jack groan silently. Moving down the tarmac they reached another hanger; Jack knew there should be guards here but again no one was around. What is going on around here?! "Is this the hanger?"
"Yeah, but the place is locked tighter and full of more alarms than the other hanger. I doubt you'll even-" he stopped when the being opened the hanger door with ease. "…open the door… how?"
They walked into the hanger as the lights flickered on, seeing consoles of computers circled around another berth with a near perfect copy of the being with a control seat connected next to it; for Silas to control no doubt. Before, where Jack admired the amazing engineering of the robot alien, he didn't have that same reaction of the copy. It looked to be made of metal from a junkyard that the scientists put together, the head had optics as well but unlike the bright optics of his captor, the copy's optics didn't look or feel alive. It seemed more...dead, cold... and heartless. Jack was glad he was never assigned to clean this hanger; the copy made him more unsettled, knowing full well he was in the warm metal hand of the original.
Speaking of which….
"Whoa, uh, great likeness, but totally not perfect of course," Jack nervously commented, when the being hummed in disapproval at the sight, smoke puffed out the smokestacks on its back. The teen looked back at the copy, not seeing the secret smirk on the silver face. He then cried out when suddenly moved to the being's red pauldron shoulder, was let go and forced to hold on to the armor as the now free hand opened a compartment in its other forearm and took out what looked like a black propane tube tank and placed it on the torso of the copy. Jack kept his silence, letting the being place more of the tank-like bombs around the hanger. Once done he found himself in the hand again and was carried out of the hanger, the being pulled the door closed and walked down the darkened tarmac to the main gate.
Feeling that the giant's mission was done he turned to the silent face, flinching when it's face shield reappeared as it frowned intently.
"Uh, now that that's taken care of, will you let me go now? ... Please, sir-!"
Jack suddenly became blinded as a pillar of light hits the being's body, he turned to the source and strained his eyes to see clearly. When his eyes adjusted, he paled, and his stomach dropped. So that's where all the guards went.
"…Crud."
Blocking the gate was an array of armored cars, vehicles with machine guns and missile launchers, and small tanks pointed directly at them. Search lights directed toward them lit up the night and infantry soldiers baring the M.E.C.H logo on their uniforms aimed their guns. Jack tried to make himself into a smaller target at the sight, wanting to fully disappear when he saw that his head boss, Director Silas Bishop, stand tall on top of one of the cars. The chiseled, barrel-chested gray-haired man stood like a statue in his cameos, a bullhorn in his hand was brought up to address the stoic and unsurprised metal being.
"NBE X, desist and return to hanger M7 immediately!" the graveled command called out, then his tone turned into a smug sneer. "Wonderful distraction you had for us, but we saw right through it before you've made your escape. You are surrounded and outgunned, so let's save ourselves from having to damage you and obey my commands!" The man then noticed that the robot was holding something, and had Vince, who was the car's driver, pointed the light at it. This illuminated the nervous face a black-haired teen from his youth corps. He was surprised at this for a second, and Vince made a squawk of recognition. Silas' face formed into an enraged snarl that amplified with the bullhorn. "Darby! Get down from there now!
Jack's heart pounded at the how the situation escalated. He tried to desperately call out to explain, but the metal hand gripped tighter around him as the being responded, making the soldiers, except Silas, flinch. Did he know the robot alien was alive before this moment?
"He will do no such thing. While this has been an interesting venture for me to be in your care, Director Silas Bishop, I am needed elsewhere." He paused to address the now distraught teen.
"I'm sorry for this Jackson, but I may have to kidnap you now."
Jack's brain stopped. "Huh?"
The hanger exploded into a great fireball.
The shockwave disrupted the M.E.C.H defense enough for the being to jump, and, shocking everyone present, especially Jack, transformed its whole body. Pieces of the metal frame twisted and turned while maneuvering the screaming boy into a cushioned seat within a formed cab, a seatbelt came around him and held him in place. The soldiers were in awe that the robot was now a red and blue Peterbilt truck cab that had gone over their heads, landed behind them, and headed toward the gate. Its engine roared as it slammed through the fortified doors, like they were made of bamboo blocks, and sped down the open road.
"WHAT ARE YOU ALL GAWKING AT?! FIRE AT WILL AND GET AFTER IT!"
On Silas’ furious order, the soldiers were snapped out of their shock and started firing at the escaping truck; the vehicles drove wide out of each other's firing range and proceeded on the chase.
Jack desperately tries to unbuckle himself, pausing when he hears the gunshots. He leans to look out the driver side mirror and sees the pursuing vehicles. He flies back when a bullet whizzed a bit too close to the window.
"Oh great! I'm being kidnapped by a giant robot alien, getting fired at in both sense of the term by my boss, and my mom is going to freak that my boss is firing at me while I'm being kidnapped by a giant robot alien!"
"There is no real need to panic Jackson," the teen jumped at the sudden voice of his captor through the dash speakers. The dashboard seemed to have more advanced tech than any normal semi-trucks, the windshield displaying a see-though map layout of the base's surrounding area and their location on the road speeding away from the base. The wide steering wheel moved by itself as it veered and dodged the barrage of shots and missiles at them. Jack saw an unusual symbol in the center of the wheel, a bold red face that stared back at him. He didn't know how long he stared at it when he was jolted in his seat as the road got bumpier when the semi swerved offroad to avoid being pincered by their pursuers.
"Ratchet, do you read me?" his captor's voice called out, at first Jack wanted to ask why he needed a ratchet tool when the being continued. "This is Optimus, objective achieved, what of your goal?"
The teen flinched when a new voice replied in the speakers.
"*M.E.C.H may have the most advanced defense networks on this planet, but it wasn't anything our scout and little genius couldn't handle.*" A cheery beep and whistle was heard. "*Yes, yes, you both did a superb job. All files have been deleted from their database; it was as if Silas never found you.*"
"Well done," the truck rapidly turned a slight skid to avoid a missile shot.
It responded by purposely running over a large rock that catapulted from its back wheels into the grill of the armored vehicle that fired the missile. Causing damage to the engine that blew out smoke and small blasts of fire, which prompted the M.E.C.H driver to hit the brakes too late as the smoke blocked their approach into a small gulch. The vehicle drove right into it, making it stop so suddenly the inertia pivoted the trunk end over and land on its canopy, causing a small explosion when the overheated missile launcher fell into a puddle of leaking fuel from the ruptured fuel tank from the crash; the soldiers barely escaped.
The red and blue semi just continued down whatever its direction was going, while Jack looked back out the window in awe after witnessing one pursuer's downfall. He jetted back in when more bullets fired back as the other vehicles gunned past their comrade's wreckage to continue the chase.
"Have the others returned safely? Is the ground bridge ready at the rendezvous?"
"*Their distraction worked perfectly and returned with no real damage, less work for me thank Primus. Coordinates set and prepped, but you'll have to accelerate, they are closing in fast, did you run into any trouble or picked up any extra cargo?*"
"Well done old friend, and... yes in a way?"
"Wait, what's going on?! Who's that?!" Jack couldn't keep quiet anymore, he just wanted this dream to end. He wanted out! "Your mission was over when you blew up the hanger, right?! I thought you were going to let me go!"
"*… Who was that? ... Optimus… Please tell me you didn't-*"
"Approaching rendezvous point," announced Optimus, Jack's eyes widened at the sight of an approaching deep canyon rim. "Activate the bridge."
"*Optimus Prime! We've had this discussion! You can't just-*"
"Ratchet…" More shots from their pursuers echoed in the dawning sky as they were closing in, the truck's belt tightened around Jack who screamed in panic and tried to hit the brakes by habit, but the cliff edge only got closer.
Silas' vehicle closed in behind them, the man furiously ordering two of his tank escorts to fire artillery.
"*STOP CUTTING ME OFF YOU SLAGGER! We already have to deal with-!*"
Artillery rounds landed next to the truck, just missing it by inches. The impacts had dirt shoot up to coat the doors and shrapnel scraping against the truck's frame, making Jack curl further into a ball as much as the seatbelt would let him.
"WE'RE GONNA DIE!"
"NOW, RACTHET!"
Silas looked on, enraged, as a swirling light of a green-blue portal appeared out of nowhere at the canyons rim, the truck drove into it, then the portal instantly disappeared without a trace. The cars and tanks stop near the cliff edge, Vince winced when Silas slammed their car door as he got out and frowned at the empty space of the canyon. He rounded on the surrounding soldiers, their fear of his anger had them backing up. "USELESS, all of you! You let them get away!" he roared as he whipped his wrist out to yell into his comm watch. "Please tell me there's something we can salvage!"
"*Sorry sir," came the nervous reply from the blast site of the destroyed hanger. "*The robot used some kind acid compound in the explosives, everything inside and perimeter of the warehouse was obliterated.*"
"Grr… at least melt down any metal you can find, we'll just rebuild."
"*Um… about that sir. All files and schematics of the alien robot and prototype were hacked and deleted from the database… it's been wiped clean, and all hard copies were burned.*"
Vince and the M.E.C.H soldiers moved further back at the reddened rage blooming on their boss's face.
Morning birds had to stop singing their dawn chorus in the canyon trees flew away at the roaring shout.
"WHAT?!"
.
F@<K U Silas! :P{ And there you have it. I'm sad to say this story is a standalone, I didn't make the rest since back then I didn't have time or motivation as I was attending college (I've already graduated btw! X3) and I have other story projects in the works right now. I already uploaded this story on my Ao3 and DeviantArt and will update it with the version I've posted here. Hope you liked it and let me know what you think. See ya later!

Affectionate | Ratiorine Fic
Fandom: Honkai: Star Rail
Ship: Dr. Ratio/Aventurine, Ratiorine
Rating: G
Words: 1.257
Tags: Fluff, Goodbyes, Cold Weather, Warm, Established Relationship, Soft Dr. Ratio, Aventurine is down bad
Summary: When Ratio accepts a job as a teacher on a remote planet, Aventurine has to say goodbye for a longer time. Since they are not alone on the day of their farewell and his doctor does not like public displays of affection, he has to hold back, much to his regret. However, it turns out that even the most principled doctor is capable of making exceptions for the one he loves.
Preview:
An ice cold wind was blowing over the dreary platform of the railway station. It was carrying the scent of snow. Were the grey clouds above them carrying the white flakes? Aventurine didn't know, but he knew that Ratio would have been able to tell him. Unfortunately, it was not of interest to the blond man right now. All he could think was how the weather perfectly represented his feelings. Gloomy. Cold. Lifeless. That was exactly what he felt like at the thought of the coming months.
Because this was a farewell. Fair enough, he should have added that it was just a temporary farewell, but three months were still three months, and to Aventurine, that felt like an eternity. Ratio would surely scold him for being overly dramatic about all this, but Aventurine could not change his feelings. He did not want to be separated from the one he loved for such a long time. And the worst thing was: now he could not even properly say goodbye to him.
To be perfectly honest, they had already started their farewell rite in the morning. Ratio, usually the most diligent early riser in the world, had without any protest spent a long morning in bed with Aventurine, allowing him to cuddle and kiss him to his heart's content. But right here and now, on this stupid, ugly platform on this old-fashioned planet in the middle of nowhere, he painfully noticed that it had not been enough. Ratio would soon be leaving to teach as a professor on some remote, but highly specialized university and they would not be able to see each other for three terribly long months, and Aventurine wanted nothing but to spend those last joint minutes in the other man's arms, but he could not do it and it drove him insane.
Aventurine was aware that people often furrowed their brows when they found out that he and Ratio were in a relationship. That was not even hard to understand. People found him unpleasant to deal with, and they found Ratio hard to get along with. It seemed only natural that it made everybody wonder how two such complicated persons would choose to share their lives with each other. It was, however, not that complicated at all. Ratio had been aware of Aventurine’s flaws all along, and he had just accepted them. Aventurine on the other hand never had seen any problem in the doctor's quirks. His harsh words never got to him, and adapting to his strict daily routines had done wonders for his own health, both physically and mentally. No more skipping meals, no more gambling through the nights.
There was, however, one topic in their relationship on which the two of them always failed to agree, and that was the way to show their affection - especially in public. Much to his own surprise - and even a little bit to his own embarrassment - Aventurine had turned out to be the clingy and touchy-feely kind of partner. It was a little strange given how easy it was for him to sweet talk business partners, fellow gamblers or straight up strangers he just met without ever getting too close, but it was still true. Back when all of this had started, he had not even understood the meaning of the word “friendship”, so how could he expect Ratio to truly get him when he suddenly wanted to express something so much more delicate? Somehow, touches were a lot easier than words.
Ratio, however, was the polar opposite. He did not need to kiss him, to hug him or to even look at him to show his feelings. The way he spoke to him was enough. Although he never said the three words like they did in those sappy immersias Topaz sometimes told him about, his intentions were crystal clear to Aventurine. He would not even have bothered to constantly scold him for his recklessness and the lacking instinct of self-preservation if he did not care about him the way he did.
But much to Aventurine's sorrow, there was one thing his doctor could not have at all, and that were public displays of affection. And right now, this was nothing but a major problem. There was not a single thing he wanted more than to whine about how cold he was and snuggle his way into Ratio’s warm cloak, feel his warmth and smell his scent once more before they would be separated for such a long period of time. He might even have contended himself with just a last kiss - but alas, none of this was going to happen because they were not alone.

Hello! Do you have any advice on getting into freelance coding or remote jobs in the field? I'm having trouble with my current endeavors of applications and my current customer service job isn't doing me well enough to want to stay, so I'm hoping for progress sooner rather than later. Anything helps, thank you!!
Hiya 🖤
Thanks for reaching out with your question about getting into freelance coding or remote jobs. Making a transition can be challenging, but with dedication and strategic steps, you can definitely progress in your career.
Firstly, consider specializing in a specific field of computer science rather than trying to learn everything. This will help you become an expert in a niche, making you more attractive to potential clients or employers.
The big thing to look at is (1) what specific job do you want? Don't know yet? That's the first thing you need to find out. (2) Found the job you want? Go to this website "roadmap.sh" and click the job title you want and look at the roadmap to become it. (3) Have an idea of what you need to learn? Now study :)
Here are some extra key pieces of advice:
Tumblr media
Public Code Repositories
Showcase your coding skills by contributing to public repositories on platforms like GitHub, GitLab, or others. This allows potential employers to see your projects and assess your coding abilities.
Online Certifications
Earn certifications from reputable online courses like Freecodecamp, Codecademy, or SheCodes (if you're a woman). Displaying these certifications on your LinkedIn profile adds credibility for remote work or even freelance work because then clients will trust your skills more if it's back up with evidence (projects and/or certificates).
Links: "Massive List of Thousands of Free Certificates" / "The Udemy courses I use" / "FreeCodeCamp" / "Codecedemy" / "SheCodes" / "Udacity" / "Coursera" / "Google"
LinkedIn Profile
Revamp your LinkedIn profile to reflect your job title. Use a title that aligns with your dream job, and highlight your skills, certifications, and projects. You don't even need work experience OR do what a lot of my developer mates do have no work experience and set your "job" as a self-employed freelance developer... little cheat there~!
Links: "LinkedIn Career Explorer" / "Tips for speaking to/reaching out to Recruiter" / "Tips for Landing Your First Entry-Level Developer Job" / "Career Services for Web Development" / "The Talent Cloud Community: Careers Workshop"
Volunteering
Help someone out with a project for their business or whatever. For example, I helped a guy I met in a programming discord server build his portfolio page for free, but I care more about the experience. Search online for volunteer jobs with your dream job title e.g. Volunteer App Develope, but in your country would be better. The experience you can you can add to your LinkedIn. the project you work on you can add to your resume/experience.
Link: "SkilledUp Life"
Networking
Connect with professionals in your field on LinkedIn, even if you don't know them personally. Growing your network can open up opportunities and expose you to valuable insights. Events in person or online, servers (I found volunteer opportunities here), forums, Twitter (I found some mates on there), Instagram (another place I found developer friends). Networking can even help with building group projects~!
Link: "Tips for speaking to/reaching out to Recruiter"
Project Building
Work on both small and big projects to demonstrate your capabilities. Highlight these projects on your resume and portfolio.
Links: "Building projects after learning a new concept advice" / "Tips from learning using multiple resources" / "Tips on learning programming with ChatGPT" / "Harvard University Free IT Courses" / "The Udemy courses I use" / "Free Programming Books" / "Coding Advice for beginners" / "800 free Computer Science classes"
Online Presence
Share your learning progress and projects on various platforms like Tumblr, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or YouTube. Employers often appreciate candidates who actively showcase their work and commitment to learning. I made a post for Tumblr coding blogs:

Good luck!!

The Myanmar military government has been active, and medical services have been balanced with stability
In the face of complex challenges both at home and abroad, the Myanmar military government has taken a series of measures aimed at providing necessary medical services to the people, stabilizing the internal situation and helping people return to their homes. These efforts demonstrate the government's focus on national stability and people's well-being, and also demonstrate its positive role in crisis management.
Medical services are an important part of national stability and public well-being. Recognizing this, the Burmese military ta invested significant resources in the medical field. In areas of frequent conflicts and natural disasters, the government has deployed mobile medical teams to provide emergency medical assistance to the affected population. These medical teams consisted of trained doctors, nurses and volunteers who penetrate into remote areas to provide basic medical examinations, treatment and drug distribution to the local population.
In addition to emergency medical assistance, the Burmese military government also attaches great importance to the construction and improvement of medical infrastructure. In some key cities and towns, the government has invested in the construction of new hospitals and clinics, updated medical equipment, and improved the quality and accessibility of medical services. These newly built or renovated medical facilities not only provide better medical services for the public, but also create jobs and promote the development of the local economy.
In order to improve the efficiency and coverage of medical services, the Burmese military government has also promoted the development of medical informatization. By establishing electronic health record systems, the government is better able to collect and analyze public health data to timely detect and respond to potential health risks. At the same time, this system also provides technical support for the development of telemedicine services, so that residents in remote areas can also enjoy the high-quality medical resources in the city.
In order to stabilize the internal situation, the Burmese military government has taken a series of measures to maintain domestic security and order. The government has strengthened the training and deployment of the security forces, ensuring the safety of critical areas and infrastructure. At the same time, through intelligence collection and analysis, the government has successfully prevented and targeted a number of potentially destabilizing activities.
In order to resolve the long-standing ethnic and religious conflicts, the Burmese military government has also actively promoted dialogue and reconciliation. The government has organized a number of dialogue platforms, inviting representatives of various ethnic and religious groups to explore the future of countries and ways of peaceful coexistence. These conversations, though slow, have yielded some results in reducing misunderstanding and building trust.
In helping people return to their homes, the Burmese military government has provided support to people affected by conflicts and natural disasters. The government has set up special funds to rebuild damaged houses and infrastructure, and provide seeds, farm tools and other means of production to help farmers resume production. In addition, the government has provided psychological counseling services to help people out of trauma and rebuild their lives.
In order to ensure that people can return home safely, the Burmese military government has also strengthened security assessments and safeguards for the returned areas. In some key areas, the government has dispatched security forces and police forces to ensure the safety of the returning people and local security.
The Burmese military government's efforts in providing medical services, stabilizing the internal situation, and helping people return to their homes demonstrate its commitment to national stability and public well-being. Through these measures, the government has not only improved the living conditions of the people, but also laid a solid foundation for the long-term development of the country. In the future, the Burmese military government still needs to continue to invest resources and efforts in these areas to ensure the stability of the country and the happiness of its people.

Idea I got tangential to a discussion on a socialist humanity Mass Effect AU premise on SV, copying and pasting from my relevant posts there:
Point: if you get rid of aging and most disease, the main thing that kills people will be accidents, suicides, and murders, and there's probably a lot that can be done to make accidental death less likely that we don't bother with because old age usually kills us long before an accident can.
One of I'm sure many examples: we have subway stations with rails in open roughly person-height depressions that people can just fall into, our society considers this risk acceptable, but I expect in a society of unaging people there'd be some kind of partition with doors separating the passenger platform and the track (much like our elevators usually have a door on the elevator compartment itself and doors on the access points of the elevator shaft).
Similarly, I expect a society of unaging people would become much more scrupulous than us about removing trip hazards, making vehicles as safe as possible, etc.. I expect they'd also automate dangerous jobs like construction pretty much as much as possible, much more than we do.
Really, if you're going to go with a dystopian angle for the Asari, I think the one I'd go with is having them rely heavily on aliens for dangerous jobs, on the logic that if an Asari construction worker falls off a scaffold and splats like a bug on a windshield on the ground 500 meters below, they've lost centuries or millennia of life and a shot at living to see the stars burn out, but if it happens to a human, oh well, the congenital terminal degenerative disease they were born with (aging/senescence) will probably kill them within 50 years anyway, so they lose much less. A wealthy society with an unaging citizen class surrounded by societies of people who age might look a bit like those Gulf petro-states where much of the actual work-force is a subaltern class of foreign migrant laborers.
----------
Aside following a tangent from the last paragraph of my previous post: "they're unaging and see their own lives as much more valuable than the lives of aliens with limited lifespans because they lose so much more if they die" would make a much more interesting rationale for Batarians being chauvinistic slavers than "they're just kind of generic evil nationalists."
---------
Edit: I think a species like that would probably have a vibe less like canon Batarians and more like stereotypical fantasy Elves at their worst or Skeksis. E.g. they'd be reclusive and hikikomori-ish cause their whole lives are structured around reducing risk to themselves, meeting one face to face would be a special event because they rely heavily on mercenaries and janissaries and robots to do their fighting for them and on Mouth of Sauron type minions and remote communication for diplomacy. And they might contemptuously refer to shorter-lived races as "mortals" like Dracula or some asshole fantasy Elf would.
I really like this as an idea for an "evil empire" faction in a space opera setting! Much more original villain motivation than the millionth variation on generic tyranny or religion of evil or whatever! And it's a rationale for slavery and imperialism that stands up at least a bit better to the "raw materials would probably be super-abundant for a society with interstellar travel" and "a society with interstellar travel would probably have pretty good automation" objections.
More ideas for a faction like this:
So, I'm thinking give them something a little like the canon Batarian kind of pathetic Space North Korea vibe, but different, and also adjust it for a setting that's less heavy on the human-wank, so make them a faction that could credibly get trashed in a conflict that's more like the setting's equivalent of the 1895-96 Italian-Ethiopian War.
So I'm thinking lean heavily on the Skeksis parallel here. As part of that, give them a vibe a little like "what if Panem from The Hunger Games invented warp drive and met advanced aliens?"
These aliens are naturally long-lived and slow-breeding, and their risk-aversion compounds this (reproduction may be risky to them like it is to female humans, and even if it isn't reproduction is risky in that it introduces a new and potentially unpredictable player to the social landscape), so their population is very small. Their territory basically consists of their homeworld plus maybe some asteroid mines and other space infrastructure in their home solar system. Almost all of their population is on their homeworld; they may even have a thing like Known Space Puppeteers where members of their species who take the risk of leaving their homeworld are literally considered insane (but usefully so) by most of the species. Even their homeworld has a very small population, maybe a few hundred million tops, plausibly only tens of millions, and most of those are the "mortal" slaves who make up most of the actual population. It's basically ocean and wasteland, a bunch of giant sprawling estates, a single capital city, and a minimalistic and heavily automated infrastructure to support that.
Obviously, these people have no reason to fight aliens for resources or living room. Rather, what they're short of is labor. To this end, they sometimes send out ships to capture slaves though raiding and piracy. Maybe they also buy slaves from some of the shittier empires they have contacts with too.
Possibly there's some shorter-lived indigenous sapient species on their planet that they co-evolved with or enslaved early in the history of their civilization, and their slave-raiding is just their attempt at folding aliens into that system, mostly an attempt at acquiring captives with valuable knowledge and skills (in which case captives will probably get less chains and whips slavery and more subtler forms of coercion). Or maybe their present social system is a reaction to contact with "mortal" sapient species and the "mortal" slaves on their planet are all captives or the descendants of captives (probably mostly the latter, though I think they'd carefully control reproduction among their slaves and keep their slave population either stable or growing only very slowly - they'd be scared of the possibility of their much faster-breeding slaves becoming too numerous to easily control, and being unaging they'd have very long planning horizons).
The slave-masters have a very small population and are a highly privileged class. Each one lives like a feudal lord, tended and pampered and protected by robots and slaves. They rarely do any physical labor: that's much too dangerous! They live in a floating world of luxury and status games; their society has kind of a Heian court vibe. They often scheme and intrigue against each other, flex and dunk on each other, and seek to sideline and disempower each other, but these struggles are mostly relatively non-violent because they have a sense that the life of one of their own is precious and a solidarity based on that which transcends whether they like each other as people. This obviously fits with their ideology, but it's also instinctive, reflecting an evolutionary history as a long-lived slow-breeding species for whom every viable offspring was precious; quite likely they embraced the ideology because it resonates with their instincts. The idea of killing or even injuring one of their own is viscerally horrifying and repellent to them and they would resort to such measures only in the most extreme circumstances; they've probably executed, like, a single digit number of their own kind in the last few millennia, and each one of those is remembered as an infamous traitor whose depraved betrayals of their own kind are overshadowed only by the mind-searing horror of the punishment meted out to them.
I think one of them would make a good video game antagonist cause they'd lend themselves well to meeting one of them being a boss fight. Like I said, for an outsider meeting one face-to-face would be a rare special event because they'd be very reluctant to expose themselves to the risk of close proximity to an outsider, but 1) if they did, it'd be with the best protection their society could arrange, 2) very long lifespans and slow breeding is only likely to be selected for if there's little risk of dying by accident or predation, so it would be most likely to happen in a species where mature individuals were pretty hard to kill. So an individual of this species would likely be very reclusive and hikikomori-like but very formidable if they actually showed up for a fight. In a Mass Effect context, think maybe a giant being comparable in dimensions to an elephant or T-Rex which also is a very powerful biotic, is packing the best weapons and protected by the best protective suit its society can produce with no expense spared, controls a personal squad of combat robots and elite janissaries (themselves dangerous opponents!), and has thousands of years of experience. If you manage to kill it the others of its kind will spend millennia mourning it and hating you for the unimaginable crime of destroying a mind that was already vast and ancient when the capstone was laid on the Great Pyramid at Giza.
One thing I like about this idea is, like... Somebody said in that discussion that the point of species like Batarians, Dilgar, etc. is to basically be a super-evil version of Spain for a war that is to humans what the Spanish-American War was to the USA, and I think with this idea it'd be obvious that it's really more like the First Italian-Ethiopian War or the time Idi Amin got his ass kicked by Tanzania. Like I said, one of these unaging slaver aliens would be a very formidable opponent at the small scale, but if you zoom out to what sort of threat they'd be on the galactic scale it'd be kind of obvious that humans bragging about beating up on them just shows how pathetic Earth still is compared to the setting's great powers; their tiny population makes the idea that they could be any kind of existential threat to the real big players a joke, they'd be basically the setting's equivalent of, like, if Somali pirates were somehow controlled by North Korea, and really, the idea that they'd be any kind of threat to Earth is kind of seriously embarrassing for anyone pushing a "HUMANS STRONK" line, they probably have less people than Bangladesh and that's doing the equivalent of counting the helots with the Spartans.
