WORLD AIDS DAY! CHECK OUT THE HIV AWARENESS GRAPHIC NOVEL: BACK IN PRINT!
Today is World AIDS Day! I developed and wrote this book 12 years ago to reduce the stigma of HIV. It is one of my proudest moments in all of my comic book career. It continues to make a difference with newly infected people as well as families affected with it. With World AIDS day today it would make a good read for anyone. (digitally on iTunes, Nook, Kindle, ComiXology and more) It really is…

“I have a job to do. I have a mission ... I have joy, I have peace within myself." HIV has the power to change the way we think, feel, and look at ourselves and those around us. It can give us an entirely different perspective on life, and living. In the words of my brista Ocie, "I have HIV. HIV doesn't have me." I challenge anyone to know and embrace their status. It is no longer a death sentence. It has as much power as we let it. Get tested. Know your status. Love yourself. #HeIsValuable #SpeakOutHIV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQgXJRQY4KQ

Sympathy and Empathy for a Demonized Victim
So many feelings have been stirred in me as I watch media coverage via social media of Charlie Sheen's public announcement of his HIV status. As I scrolled through Facebook and watched morning show coverage of the announcement in a busy diagnostic lab waiting room this morning, I had a stunning realization of the privilege of anonymity that I had. You see, I was sitting in that waiting room discreetly holding the lab orders for my semiannual HIV viral load and CD4 count underneath the less intimidating and routine panels ordered by my bariatric surgeon and my primary care doctor. While the world, sat and made silent judgments about this man and his behaviors and whether or not he deserved sympathy, I sat and felt heartbreak and reverance for this man and his courage. I also felt indignation for the circumstances that lead to this public announcement. It is absolutely appalling that as a society we can idly accept an individual's personal medical information to be leveraged against them for financial gain or public attention. I know in the ten years since I have known of my status, this has only happened to me once and it was completely demeaning and demoralizing to feel that I was not afforded the same dignity and respect as everyone else. Now I understand that there are laws protecting people from HIV positive individuals knowingly exposing them to the virus, however, the gross abuse of those laws can impede the rights of the HIV positive individual. This feeds stigma. This is saying that because I have this virus, I am less than and as such no longer have the right to my privacy and dignity. I admit that I have not seen the entire interview, but the pieces I saw showed a much humbler man than has previously been displayed. I can only imagine the courage it took to sit in that chair and reveal to the world what every instinct in your body has been fighting to keep secret. I understand why he paid all of those women. There was a time I would die before allowing others to know about my status. In fact, this is the first time I have ever openly admitted in a public forum that I am HIV positive. I have been praying for God to reveal his timing for me to release my shame and fear of how it would affect my life. So to wrap this up, today I am grateful for God's work in life that has given me peace and forgiven me of the sins that led to my HIV infection and grace that I can extend to the one who infected me. I am also grateful to Charlie Sheen who courageously confronted the speculation and accusation and came clean. I pray that this can be used for healing and God's will in his, mine, and many others' lives.

On this day, June 19th, 2015, I tested positive for HIV. Wow! It's ONLY been a year. But damn it's really been a WHOLE year! I'm trying to fathom the emotions that I am feeling on today. It's seems to be so many feelings at one time rushing to me. Pride. Sadness. Determined. Happiness. Hopeful. Surprised. Hurt. Blessed. I could go on... But in this year I have made it a point to not allow my HIV status stop my life in any way. Instead, my HIV has elevated me in so many personal, professional, psychological and spiritual ways. I stand pride to say that HIV has not and will not stand in the way of me thriving. I AM A PROUD YOUNG, GAY, BLACK MAN wrapped in BUTCH QUEEN REALNESS serving BLACK GAY MAGIC and THRIVING WITH HIV. I stand so strong, confident and intentional to show my black queer brothers both infected and affected by HIV to know that you are valuable, your are worthy and you are more than your HIV status. No matter what his status is, He Is Valuable! The journey of those who live a HeIsValuable Poz life it is not an easy one, not a walk through the park and there is so much work more work to be done. Believe me I know day in and day out. However, you listen to me when I tell you this.... HIV WILL NOT stand in the way of your life unless you allow it to. HIV is living with me not that I am living with HIV. Let me say it one more time. HIV is living with Me, not that I am living with HIV. Know that you're loved. Love yourself enough to know your status. Love yourself enough to take care of that status either way. Thank you all for all your love, support and words of encouragement through my one year journey. There is many many many more years to come! #HeIsValuable #OneYearLater #SpeakOutHIV #HIVTreatmentWorks #blackgaylivesmatter #BlackGayMagic
