What is 17776? All I know about it is that it has characters, could be a book, tv show, video game, etc, so go wild with infodumping.
If you send an ask back, I'd prefer you send it to my second blog, @k-owo-sher unless you are requesting a drawing, as my main is my art blog
i like to call 17776 a multimedia experience! because while 17776 does generally follow a webcomic format, it also makes use of video and nonstandard formatting and i LOVE that about it. 17776 introduces itself in a super weird way, it made me think my computer was broken at first, it makes you scroll a bunch in the first chapter and then never again, and it's so good while being only like 13 chapters long. i don't really want to spoil anything plot wise because i SWEAR it is so good with all the reveals and worldbuilding in the beginning.
but i will say that like. 17776 is such a earnest and genuine story. it feels very made with love and you can see that in some of the janky camera moment in the videos or the way that characters speak with each other or the specific details the story chooses to focus on - all of it feels so, so real because it's so heavily based in real* life. it's all based in the usa and it is so immediately and usamerican story, but the lives and hopes and fears of each character feel like a message to everyone in the world that it's okay to keep going. 17776 doesn't try to explain everything about its own world, just the things relevant to the current plotline and it's! so good! i like that it doesn't try too hard with explanation even though you Know the author probably thought a lot about some of the stuff.
17776 makes heavy use of google maps (screenshots of it and moving along 3d maps itself) to emphasize the Space and Scale of the story and it's SO good. especially when there's dialogue going along as you move through a particular area it just really feels like a dream or a movie you saw as a child. it feels very loving and i like that
*Albeit an alternate version of reality, but very grounded nonetheless.

@eye-lantern
I don't know if it is a spoiler but the language in the first two books is still very much English, not a translation for the reader. We have later ways to be sure of that. Language will be an interesting subject, just not right now.
@wellhappybirthdaytomeiguess:
@eye-lantern Good point! and a particular dialect of English too I think, at least in some small ways.
If it is canonically supposed to be English, then I think I would have to call that a major worldbuilding mistake. If you remember 17776, where people stopped dying and stopped having a kids and just persisted for 15000 years, at some point I asked some people who were more familiar with language change than me if in that circumstance, language change would actually stop and we would just be speaking modern languages for 15000 years because there was no longer any generational transmission happening, and the answer was that actually no, language change would continue to happen even if everyone was immortal and there wasn't any generational transmission. Only a few people in this universe are immortal, and other than that, generational transmission seems to be happening just fine. So the only way I could accept that they are speaking some modern variety of English is if it turns out that it somehow hasn't actually been 10,000 years or something like that. Otherwise, I would classify this as a mistake.
@wellhappybirthdaytomeiguess:
Harrow in the memories, in my opinion, projects a less confident image and sense of self than she did in Gideon. We see this in her inability to think of comebacks to Ortus immediately, or in sitting on the House dirt when travelling to Canaan House. IDK, maybe its just me. She just seems less herself and more the fragile young woman she refused to present herself as in Gideon. But thats just me.
Yes, and in the memories she gets caught off guard when they ask her to recite the Ninth House prayer, and Ortus does it for her. I'll have to keep a look out to see if more stuff like that happens later

@i-guess-im-into-this-now
First of all, this post has made my day! I'm delighted to hear these creations have resonated with u ^_^ Tom Waits & Lemon Demon are relatively new faves of mine, so I'm still exploring their oeuvres myself!
Tom Waits is just incredible! His voice is really something else, I could listen to it for hours <3 If u liked Tom Waits, u might also like the English band The Real Tuesday Weld. Their sound is usually fairytale dreamy or smoky noir, sometimes both. Their breakout hit was "Me and Mr Wolf" due to its music video but my personal fave is a newer release called "Silicone". I'll link u to my faves playlists from each of these 3 artists in case u would like a guided exploration :)
Tom Waits (17 tracks)
Lemon Demon (48 tracks)
The Real Tuesday Weld (36 tracks)
I had forgotten abt that quote from 17776, thanks for bringing it back to me! It's 100% the vibe. When I first came across 17776, I thought it was an article. Then the webpage exploded & I just stuck around bc I was too fascinated to leave 😂 I got through it in a day but that was basically nonstop reading, I couldn't put it down! My favourite parts are the side plot with the light bulb & the moment right at the end where all the answers come together in a flurry <3
Also, Lizzie Bennet Diaries mention!! Another beloved work from the web.
I realised I was a bit vague abt the books, so I'll give u a sentence on each one, just so u know what to expect bc I'm aware starting a new book can be a big time investment! Fortunately, these are all fairly short (<200 pages IIRC 🤔).
Ella Minnow Pea is set on a highly literate island where slowly over time the Council rules that it is forbidden to write or speak certain letters of the alphabet, & the story is told through written letters that the characters send each other, so u can see the ways they work around that censorship & feel the tension start to climb as more & more of the alphabet becomes banned.
Invisible Cities is a beautifully surreal travelogue of Marco Polo's journey around Kublai Khan's empire and his meetings with the Khan in which he tells him abt all his cities, although none of them truly exist & they are all secretly some kind of message or moral or symbol that answers a concern the Khan has abt his vast empire.
The Menelaiad is ostensibly the story of the Trojan War told through Menelaus's perspective (he introduces himself as "the eternal husband" & it only gets better from there), but is actually told in a series of nested stories as he tells his story to different people around Greece. It also does some weird & wacky things w punctuation bc it was written in the 1960s & experimenting w the literary form was v fashionable back then.
There's no rush at all to explore all my earlier or my newer recs — please meander through them as u see fit :) But if/when u do, do please tag me as u mentioned, I'd love to read yr thoughts!
Hi! Just read yr blog description abt weird recs :) If ur still taking any, may I recommend the online story 17776, the Tom Waits song 'Singapore', the Lemon Demon songs 'Soft Fuzzy Man' and 'Lifetime Achievement Award', the books 'Ella Minnow Pea' and 'Invisible Cities' (not related), & the short story 'The Menelaiad' if ur into Homeric epics! I have the PDF of that last one & can send it to u, it's p rare :) Enjoy! & if ur not taking weird recs, have a lovely day all the same 💙
I will take weird recs forever and always. 🍌🍌🍌
I'm unfamiliar with all of the things you just recommended but will dutifully and delightedly check them all out.
Thanks so much for weird recs! 💕
#all the angels#nice things#i-guess-im-into-this-now#genuinely my fave post this year!! thank u for taking a chance on those recs <3 so so happy u found something to enjoy in them

how are you
I’ve been better. It’s sad that 17776 had to end, but the whole moral of that story is you just got to let things end. I’ve been sick the past couple days, so I’m playing a lot of minecraft while dropping the occasional meme I can think of here and updating my cartoon liveblog.
Speaking of minecraft: They’ve added the hardest achievement ever in the new update. I’m determined to get it. I talk about it under the cut if you care.
So in Minecraft they had achievements for various tasks. Now in v 1.12 they call them advancements but they are basically the same thing.
One of these advancements in called “How did we get here?” and to get it you have to have all 20 effects on you at once. It’s insanely difficult. Ridiculously difficult. Here’s how I’m doing it.
11 of the effects: (Night Vision, Invisibility, Fire Resistance, Jump Boost, Slowness, Speed, Water Breathing, Poison, Regeneration, Strength, and Weakness) can be gotten from potions. Some of the potions are tricky to make, but this part is relatively easy. 11/20 effects
The Pufferfish gives us (Hunger, Nausea, and Poison (again)). Still pretty easy, you already needed one of these for the water breathing potion anyway. 13/20 effects.
If you get shot with a spectral arrow, you get the (Glowing) effect. This isn’t really a big deal. It’s just glowstone and an arrow. I can set up a dispenser to shoot it at my face. It only lasts a couple seconds, so I’m going to have to do this one near the end. 14/20 effects
The Enchanted golden apple gives you (Absorption, Regeneration, Resistance, and Fire Resistance.) You can just make it by taking the gold blocks from an ocean monument. This is annoying, but it gets worse. 16/20 effects.
An active beacon of any level can give you the (Haste) effect. You have to kill the Wither to make one, so I still have to get another wither skull for that. 17/20 effects.
These last three is where it gets tricky. (Mining Fatigue, Wither and Levitation) Mining fatigue can only be got by being near an elder guardian, which lives in the ocean monuments of the over-world. Wither is got by being hit by a wither skeleton, which lives in the nether fortresses of the nether. Levitation is got by being hit by a shulker’s bullet. They live in the end cities in the islands of the end. That’s three effects from three dimensions.
The elder guardian needs water to live. I can’t really move it. The shulkers can’t move at all. However, I can move the Wither skeleton. Mining fatigue lasts longer, so I’ll put it near the shulkers. This means I had to bring a wither skeleton (named so it wouldn’t despawn) through the nether portal, through the end portal, over a looooooong bridge to the outer islands (they don’t fit through the teleport crystals) and finally over near an end city.
Here’s how it’s going to go. Starting at the ocean monument, the elder guardian gives me Mining fatigue for five minutes (1). I’m going to book it to the nearest end portal (going through the nether to cut the distance down), go through the teleport crystal to the outer islands, and over to the end city with the wither skeleton. The beacon I set up nearby will give me haste (2) I’ll let the wither skeleton, which I trapped in a cage, hit me, giving me wither (3). I’ll consume the pufferfish, (6) enchanted golden apple (10), and 8 potions that weren’t redundant, in descending order of their durations (18). I’ll have the dispenser fire the spectral arrow at me (19), and then finally have the shulker shoot me. (20)
Do you see what I mean by this being a ridiculous achievement? Goddamn.

7 things I’m into this week: Sports for people who don’t like sports
Every week, I collect things from around the internet and share my favorites here.
For a couple of years now, I’ve written and copy-edited for one of SB Nation’s satellite sites, and because of that, I tend to feel really proud of the things that the main page puts out, even though I have nothing to do with it. In the last few weeks, SBN’s Jon Bois has lit all corners of the internet on fire with his sprawling and ambitious project called “17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future.” It’s speculative fiction, I guess, but the genre is hard to pin down--it’s full of text and gifs and embedded videos and maps that make it a really interactive experience. It’s weird, it’s poignant, it’s heartbreaking, it’s hilarious, and it barely has anything to do with football. It’s more about the human experience than anything, and the ways we find meaning in things even when it seems like there’s no meaning to be had at all. It’s even gotten reviewed in the New Yorker. (If it seems like I’m selling this really hard, it’s because I am; I almost didn’t include it here for fear that people would click on it and abandon it after a few minutes because they didn’t “get it” yet. Stick with it for a few hours--I promise it is more than worth the ride.)
Another sports thing that the non-sporting person might find to be of interest: Jacobin magazine’s exploration of baseball’s ties to the labor movement, as well as various other social justice causes over the years. If you need some modern context for why this shit still matters, you can also check out this story about how Minor League Baseball players get totally screwed.
Last sports thing (with a serious TW attached): this 2015 piece about boxer Floyd Mayweather’s history of violence against women, with some musings on how the consuming public might hand Mayweather his first-ever defeat.
An examination of how true progressive politics must be divorced from individualist thinking.
Speaking of the capitalist hellscape: a satisfying excoriation of the “McMansion,” a term you might not have heard before but can probably see in your mind’s eye with no other frame of reference.
It’s always nice when a poem grabs you and makes you feel something instead of you having to pore over it academically before you decide whether or not it’s good. Kathleen Graber’s “The Magic Kingdom” is in the former category.
I really, really liked this Tim Kreider essay on “being busy.” Best line: “If your job wasn’t performed by a cat or a boa constrictor in a Richard Scarry book I’m not sure I believe it’s necessary.”

Psychic in Waterville PA 17776
The following article goes into detail about psychic in Waterville Pennsylvania 17776 After conducting psychic readings, numerology readings and tarot card readings for over 20 years now, I have gained a definite perspective not only as an advisor but as a client. As a client, I have been able to see exactly how psychics who are not real work their magic. After getting a psychic reading from dozens of so-called psychic advisors, you may find yourself intoxicated by the things that the psychic tells you. If it sounds too good to be true, most likely it is. You have to understand the origins and purpose of psychic networks. Their job is to make lots of money, not to help you. Granted, there are real psychics who are gifted and working on psychic network lines, but I have found that most of the people working as psychic advisors period, are not real at all. I'm sure you have heard by now that many fake psychics use scripts and certain formats in conducting their psychic readings, but for the most part, it's really simple what they tell you that gets you hooked. For example, if after getting a psychic reading, you find yourself feeling intoxicated almost, then they have done their job superbly. To be told that the one you love, loves you and that you will marry them and be together for the rest of your life is intoxicating. They give you hope that keeps you calling and calling until after you see that you have been lied to, you begin to face reality and the truth sinks in, you now realize that what they said was not true when they said it nor will it ever turn out to be true. You will find yourself hurt and disillusioned beyond the ordinary disillusionment experienced from your own life's complications. You may even find yourself broke or in debt. It's unconscionable that people could prey on others' vulnerabilities and pain in this way. But that is exactly what they do. And in the end, there is only more pain. And the inevitable distrust of psychics. It's this "fake" paradigm, which has its roots in the first elemental phone psychic networks, that dominates the public's perception and legitimate scrutiny is reasonable. But real psychics around the globe are out there and you should make it your business to find a foolproof way of determining who is real and who is not until such time as this paradigm is changed to ensure that your advisor is authentic by virtue of their credentials as it is for any professional practitioner.
Now you may frequent sites where the advisor is given feedback after your call. This is a good thing but, it is not foolproof. I have seen fake psychics who will have almost perfectly glowing feedback that goes on and on for pages. Perfect! You may wonder why this occurs. Simple. After you hear exactly what you want to hear or want to believe verified, well, this is where that intoxication comes in, you tend to reflect your glorious feelings with equally glowing feedback! But when things don't happen the way were told, you never come back. So, others following in your footsteps will call this advisor because "they too want to believe." Another thing to watch out for is fake feedback. This is also a tactic used by fakes to fool you. On sites where feedback is left, an authentic psychic advisor has to have a very high level of integrity in order to be comfortable telling the truth despite the fact of what the client wants to hear. If the psychic does not tell them what they want to hear in a reading, the client may leave very bad comments and a bad rating. It's the price you pay for being real. In my experience when I tell a client something they didn't want to hear, for the most part, they don't leave any comments. The fact is, they will most likely go find another psychic who will reflect their own feelings about the situation. A reading can be truthful and uplifting without bringing the client down but you have to ready to hear the truth. So how do you know who is real and who is not based on feedback! That is not to say that an authentic psychic is not going to have great feedback. They do, but sometimes they will be the ones to receive bad ratings and feedback mixed in with the good. Life is all about taking the good with the bad. Honestly, it's very hard to tell. The proof is really in the reading and outcomes and developing a relationship with a few trusted advisors who have been able to connect with you and your energy and have proven that their insights and predictions have been accurate for you. But, just remember, if it sounds unbelievably good, it probably is not really true and the psychic is not real and only setting up a line to take your money and setting you up for emotional failure. So be careful of perfect feedback. It's really not always an accurate gauge of the psychic advisors true abilities; except of course their ability to fleece you out of your dollars. Of course, really consistently bad feedback is a good indication that the advisor is probably just very bad and should think about going into another line of work.
Another point, you need to understand that even if you are speaking with a gifted, authentic psychic, you and that particular psychic may not connect that well. That is different from the psychic being fake. There a many reasons why a particular psychic may not connect with you. They may not be rested and ready to take calls, or you may not be relaxed and ready to receive truthful information or in some other way blocking the flow of what is being channeled thereby skewing the information on either side. Psychic readings are not an exact science. Intuition is relied upon to conduct an accurate psychic reading for a client. The reading goes much better when both the psychic advisor and client are relaxed and ready to receive. I personally find it difficult to connect with a client who wants to hear a certain thing. I have experienced many times my client trying to guide the reading. So see your authentic psychic advisor as someone who wants to help you and be ready to assist in the flow of information. To spot a fake psychic is not impossible, but if there was a way to quantify the statistic of fakes out there, I would be willing to bet that most (due in large part to large networks hiring script readers) are not real. Unfortunate, but through observation and experience, I feel this to be true. One of the Oldest Tricks in the Book. First Warning Sign That You Have Got a Fake! One of the oldest tricks in the book and something which continues to surprise me because people are continually taken in is when a psychic tells you someone has put a curse on you or there is a negative block on you which only they can remove for some exorbitant price, HANG UP! Say goodbye, because this person could not care less about you or your problems. Psychic parlors are notorious for this kind of activity. It is not for real, the curse nor the psychic. I have always believed that having a good doctor, a good mechanic and a good psychic are all professionals that are worth taking the time to assess their skill, experience and credentials to see if they are the one for you. There is nothing more satisfying than actually making a positive difference in someone's life and their continued use of your service over many years. A walking, talking testimonial is very gratifying for this psychic advisor.

i don't know much about 17776 but who's your favourite character and why :]
ohh thats hard. umm if we are talking about the main characters then its truly a tossup between nine and ten!! but i also really really like lacrecia (minor character)
if you don't want spoilers dont look down there
basically i love nine's. well not nine's optimism but more so an old-fashioned idealism. like originally before the intermission section nine is so invested in this idea that humanity is always going to make progress and that progression in terms of Huge Strides In Technology is the one way for humans to make progress. that was so charming to me even if nine was being really unrealistic about humans. nine's love for the world remains throughout 17776 and 20020 and i adore that too - their enthusiasm for history books and human stories and relationships that seem to not matter. nine feels deeply connected to a like. a historian's passion for wanting to Know about the nature of humanity.
and then of course i like how ten is just a take no bullshit character. she gets sidelined a lot by fans because she's like the "Rude Miss Know It All" but i really like that. ten is not going to get pushed around but that doesn't mean she's an asshole, she teaches classes and she might be stubborn / can come off as annoying but she lectures at universities!! she agrees to do things she doesn't usually like because she cares about her friends. also her way of communicating feels a lot like me sometimes so even if sometimes she feels too direct or formal i really really enjoy her.
meanwhile lacrecias story has stuck with me even after like a year-ish because she feels so familiar to me, even if her narrative is unrealistic. your lifelong/years-long dream being fulfilled? everything changing for you on a regular weekday? but that's how real life feels, people will get married or die or be born or be fired or get jobs all on what seem like average days. it speaks to my view of the world that every day is amazing for someone, every day something big happens and that the world is full of infinite possibilities. overall 17776 too many good characters
