i absolutely love jon bois’s thing where he frames himself as an average guy who just found out about stuff and ends up having the most reasonable understated position and disposition because of it while everyone else is lost in the ongoing drama
super underrated rhetorical device

Something is terribly wrong.
been rereading 17776 with an online book group, and it truly is a masterpiece. i don’t think it would ever work as well as a print book, but i wanted to give making the cover a go!
[ID: A digitally illustrated cover for "17776: What Football Will Look Like in the Future" by Jon Bois. The title "17776" is written vertically over a football which a pair of dark-skinned hands is holding out, and the overlap of the numbers and football is colored in swirling blue with red, green, and yellow accents. Above the hands float the satellite forms of Nine, Ten, and Juice in space. End ID]

it devastates me that The Dugout archives are no longer available.
most people know Jon Bois from 17776. but before 17776, there was The Dugout. basically, The Dugout was a series of fake AOL Instant Messenger chat rooms created by Jon and a group of other folks. they were similar to the fake text posts you see here on tumblr. it was hosted at www.WordUpThome.com, named after Philadelphia baseball legend Jim Thome.
anyway, The Dugout was so far ahead of its time and somehow perfectly on point for its era. but as far as i know, there's no way to access the content anymore. i think at one point it was accessible via the Internet Archive but i haven't been able to find it despite several attempts over the years.
this is the only screenshot i have been able to find, which in itself is hysterical and only makes me pine for an archive even more.
how do i use this blog to get word to Jon Bois that we need an archive for the love of god

In light (haha) of the recent eclipse, I’d like to point out that it was during an eclipse in 1868 that French Astronomer Jules Janssen observed an unusual spectral line produced when he pointed his telescope at the partially obscured sun. He assumed that it corresponded to the spectrum of Sodium.
Observation by English astronomer Norman Lockyer later that year revealed it to be a different element. The first one discovered on a distant celestial sphere before it was discovered on Earth. He chose to name it after the sun.
In 1968, one hundred years later, a space probe was launched to orbit around and study the sun.

I just read 17776 by Jon Bois for the first time and I'm filled with such a powerfull feeling of love for humanity right now. I have no interest in american football at all and never thought that a story that features it so prominently would make me cry that much. I love all of you.
