A Visit from a Friend
Soooo I’m sorry for not getting to this I have just had no ideas for what to write for these guys, but I have a few! So let me try to get them out over here ^-^;;
Story is below the cut
He enjoyed these trips, he didn’t think he’d ever not enjoy these trips.
Not that he didn’t love Coeus, he did, more than he loved Atlas and Mantle, but Vale was different. Vale was the home of all the good memories he’d ever known, the times with his mom who’d try her best to make up for lost time, his friends and their antics, not to mention the abundance of activities around to see and do.
However.
Vale also held a sore spot for him, a home that had once been decimated, forcing him back into the cold of Atlas. It had only been a few years since the war had ended, would Beacon even be rebuilt by the time he got there? None of it would be the same though, nothing could replace those professors and students lost, or those cramped dorms with paper thin walls.
He felt someone elbow him, pushing him into the armrest of his seat in the bullhead. He soon meets the expression of the headmaster of Coeus, whom was essentially pouting at him.
He snickers.
“Why are you staring at me like that?”
“Because this is supposed to be our first visit back to Vale since the war ended! It’s been five years Blaine, lighten up a little bit!”
“I’m just trying to be realistic with the memories I have here. The memories we have here. Also, not my first name! You know how your students tend to hound me whenever you do that…”
Blaine peers over at the Compass Academy students some sitting, some standing before looking back.
“It’s one set of memories General, are you seriously going to let that overshadow all the good we had here?”
“…I’m not.”
The other man gives him an unamused look.
“I’m not!”
“Yes you are! You’ve been like this since the week I told you about my plan to come here! I know you, you get super distant and quiet whenever something’s up, and what have you been doing this last month?”
“…Exactly that.”
“Exactly my point. So, just try to breath and remember the good stuff. You’re gonna send yourself into a spiral if you keep on the way you’re going.”
Blaine thinks for a moment, he was right but it’s hard to do that when there are so many unknowns, he sighs.
“Fine, I’ll try. But I won’t promise you anything”
“Uggggghhhh…”
“But! I can promise you that I’ll probably be better once we arrive and actually see what Vale has become. It’s just… the unknowing.”
“Well, alright. I’ll give you that considering you don’t like anything being unaccounted for.”
“Thank you, Sparrow”
The two suddenly hear the gasps of multiple people, looking over, they see the students ooh-ing and ahh-ing as they stare out the windows of the bullhead. Blaine gets up and walks towards one of the windows, Sparrow joining him. Below, stands Vale, which seemed to have recovered well from the war. No more grimm roaming around, lot’s of construction and freshly built buildings. But what caught his eye the most is the new landmark within the city, what was undoubtably the new Beacon Academy.
And it was even bigger than the last Beacon.
Sparrow stares, shocked, “What was that she said about Beacon being a bit different?”
“Well, “Beacon is going to look a lot different than it originally had been, but it’ll be different for the better. Make sure to keep an eye out.” And then she put a wink face.”
“Why do you remember all of your emails?”
“I don’t, just the ones that mean something personal to me.”
He shrugs, “Fair enough.”
Soon, the bullhead lands and Sparrow catches the attention of all of students. He says his shpeel about them all being old enough to be on their own but to still keep with the group for the time being so that they can be assigned their hotel rooms. Soon, the students are running out of the bullhead to see the sights of the esteemed Vale. Blaine and Sparrow are the last two to come out, Blaine looks around at the sky and airport, everything looks shiny and new. It’d take some getting used to, but it was a far better look than the one previous.
Eventually, the large group makes it to the hotel and unpack their things in their rooms, once finished, they’re free to do whatever they’d like in the area. Blaine finishes unpacking both Sparrow and his own things, organizing them in optimal spots for means of space. They still had to do important paperwork, after all.
“I’m surprised you let me share a room with you. Considering, um… the students.”
“We’re on the far side of the hotel away from them, and neither you nor I told them which room we’d be staying in. So… I don’t mind.” His cheeks flush slightly.
“Huh, you did that on purpose didn’t you?”
“Yep. I love your students, however, I would like to have some peace and quiet.”
“Can’t promise they won’t be running up and down the halls.”
“I made sure that they were aware of what would happen if they were menaces to the hotel staff.”
“Well look at you, staying on top of things!”
Blaine finishes up organizing their items and turns to look at Sparrow.
“So, you know where to now.”
“What?” Sparrow gives him a curious look.
Blaine sighs, “You really didn’t read her email did you?”
“I did! I just… didn’t read the last part.”
“Mhm. Anyways, she told us to go meet her once we were settled.”
“I see, are we taking the kids with?”
“Probably, yes.”
“Dang it.”
“I thought you loved your students?” Blaine snickers.
“I do! It’s the same thing as you though, everyone including us needs a vacation.”
“Well, we’ll have plenty of time for that afterwards, I want to show them one of the best places in Vale though, and a place they should want to be in if they need any information.”
“Fair, well, I’ll make the announcement to them, I’ll meet you in the lobby.”
“Sounds good”
Tumblr media
The Compass Academy group arrives at a large building, it has a glass dome on top and it looks very ornate and high quality. They all file inside where Blaine calls their attention and tells them what this place is and what it’s for.
“This is the Remnant Archives, it is the knowledge hub of remnant. Anything you want to learn here, you’ll be able to do so, even the most obscure things are recorded here in the Archives. It’s easy to get lost so make sure to take a buddy so you aren’t by yourself, this place is huge and can be confusing. Try to stay in the general area as we’ll introduce you all to the Remnant Archivist in a little bit.”
And with that, the students rush off to different spots to see where they can find the topics they’d like to read, while Sparrow and Blaine approach the front reception desk.
The lady at the desk looks up at them and smiles knowingly before pressing a button and speaking into the microphone. Nobody responds, she looks confused at it.
“What is it?” Sparrow inquires.
“Normally she would’ve responded back almost instantly. Hm… she may not be in her office.”
“It’s alright, we can try to find her.” He assures.
“Sorry about that.”
Blaine shakes his head, “Not a problem or bother.”
They wander around the Archives, taking in the shelves of hard light dust scrolls all neatly put together. Blaine hums.
“It’s weird that she’s not in her office.”
“Yeah. I wonder why.”
Suddenly, they hear yelling.
“I don’t care if you have a case that you need this information for! You do not have authorization to view it and if you do then you need to go get a judge to give you a bypass warrant!”
“We are not getting a warrant just because you’re too stubborn to let us view the files!”
“I’m not being stubborn! It’s called “I’m not bending over backwards just to get myself in trouble with the law.” You all want me to follow the law, then break it whenever it’s something you people need, and then you’ll get me in trouble if I do give you what you’re asking for. I’m not doing that, I am going to ask you one more time to leave since you all have been harassing and scaring the people in the Archives.”
“You-“
“GET. OUT. And I want your chief’s name so I can have a word with him on how he feels about his people walking in here like they own the place and disrespecting not just me, but my staff, and the civilians here.”
The officer begrudgingly gives the woman a piece of paper, presumably with the name of his boss on it. Blaine and Sparrow look at each other before shrugging and carefully approaching the woman. He calls out for her as they approach.
“What now— !!!”
Blaine looks in surprise, “Wow you’re in a mood.”
“I’m so sorry! I’ve been dealing with Valian law enforcement all day and each and every one of them keep walking in here demanding things of me and then getting mad when I literally can’t do what they’re asking!”
“Yikes.”
She covers her face with her hands, “I knooow…”
He puts a hand on her shoulder, “It’s alright Qorbyn, we actually were looking for you because we wanted to introduce you to Sparrow’s students.”
She pops up and looks at Sparrow excitedly, “You brought your students?!”
“Yep, every single one of them. Well, except for the few who were sick. But they’ll get their chance to come visit at some point.”
“That’s great! None of them have ever been here have they?”
“Not that I know of. Besides, we figured we’d tell you that considering uh, those assholes, because we know you love to introduce newcomers to the Archives.”
“Yep! If there’s one thing I’m good at doing it’s rambling about information nobody wants or needs to know!”
The three laugh. After Qorbyn introduces herself and explains in detail what the archives are and after a while of the students reading, it’s time to head back to the hotel. Blaine and Sparrow are chatting with one another as the students round up.
“Hey wait up!”
The two men turn to see Qorbyn walking up to them, her coat on.
“You’re coming with?” Blaine asks.
“Yep! My work is done for today, and the night shift crew just got here so I was bidding my farewells. Figured I’d walk back with you guys because I wanted to ask you two something!”
Sparrow looks at her suspiciously, “That being…?”
“It’s nothing bad, relax! Actually, all of the Remnant Heirs are in Vale right now, so Ruby and I decided to host a big ol’ dinner for all of us to catch up!”
“Are you serious?! How hard did you guys have to work to get us all in the same place?!”
“Pretty hard… if one person’s schedule was open, then another person’s schedule was closed, if that person’s schedule was open, then the other person’s schedule was closed, so on and so forth. Hence why I eventually just had you all send me your schedules for the next three months so that her and I could work out a time for everyone to be here. But it works! And everyone’s gonna be here for two weeks!”
Blaine smiles, “Props to you for doing that, now c’mon, I want to see what you and Ruby made for dinner!”
Sparrow laughs, “Never took you for a foodie General.”
“He’s not, only for my cooking it seems.” Says Qorbyn.
And with that, the three begin walking and chatting all the way to and from the hotel. Seems he was right, he was better once they had actually reached Vale.
Let’s hope it stays that way.

Are there any addictions or vices the cast deals/has dealt with in the past?
Yep! Also I personally headcanon that substance abuse doesn’t tend to do much in the short term because of the whole “aura heals you” thing. Long term however can be damaging.
Here’s the list:
Qorbyn - None (at least of the typical addictions, personally I consider eating disorders to fall under addiction depending on who you are, which is something Qorbyn dealt with)
Olivia - Alcohol, Prescription Drugs (Past, no longer is an alcoholic or prescription drug abuser)
Blaine - Nicotine (current)
Jasmine - None
Florence - Illegal Drugs (past)
Pewter - None
Apricot - Prescription drugs (very mildly currently, doesn’t use them very often)
Blaze - Alcohol (current)
RosĂŠ: Alcohol, Nicotine (current)
Sorbet: Alcohol, Nicotine (current)
Tawny - None
Sparrow - Nicotine (current)
Frostine - None
Ivy - Alcohol (past)
Charlie - Alcohol (past)
Bunnie - None
Bones - None
Fang - Nicotine (current)
Acacia - None

The unease from learning several people fought over this house in the beginning. “Why would anyone want this house?” To Luke always saying how this is his house house, it’s going to be his house. The slow but still too sudden shift to happiness. The food is good. There’s good company. Shifts to the lawn is nice. Waking up refreshed. The fear was exciting. It’s like being pulled in by the waves. You know what’s happening to you and the waves are not stronger than you. You can step back to the sand anytime you want. But soon the waters up to your chest and you’re not just being pulled in, but pushed around. You can’t see the shore anymore- but it’s still calming. The waters still nice. If you leave, go back to land, you’ll be cold and wet and sandy. But here, neck deep in the water it’s nice, it’s calming, it’s home.

elytra headcanons i doodled a while back! feat. my favorite joe ive ever drawn
(ID: five colored marker drawings of various hermits and their elytras. each drawing is labeled with what kind of elytra each character has. in order, these are “cloak”, “vex”, “boxelder bug”, “grasshopper”, and “spooky halloween cape thing”.
first is grian. he’s a fae with birdlike hands and feet and a whiplike tail which has feathers at the end, pointed ears, dishwater blond hair, black dot eyes, and freckles. he is wearing a red sweater, black cargo shorts, and reading glasses with small, circular lenses. his elytra is a cloak that has been cut and sewn to resemble simplified wings. the base of the wings are red and the false feathers are gold, with small buttons at each crease. grian is sitting with his elytra half unfurled around him.
next is scar. he’s a human with green eyes, brown hair, and scarred skin. he is wearing a brown brimmed hat, jacket, and pants, a white buttoned shirt, and he is holding a cane in his right hand, and gesturing with his left hand while smiling. his elytra are a pair of vex wings. they resemble simplified bat wings with moth-eaten holes and are a pale blue color.
next is tango. he’s a pale netherborn with messy, swept-back blond hair, pointed ears, sharp cheekbones, and stubble. he’s wearing a red shirt with grey circles on the biceps, gold-framed goggles with red lenses, oversized red work gloves, and black overalls. he has his back mostly turned to the camera and has his arms spread out. his smile is visible, but his eyes are obscured. there are two small, empty speech bubbles around him. his elytra are a pair of boxelder bug wings. they’re folded on his back, showing only the shell, which is black with red outlines.
next is joe hills. he’s a human with long brown hair with green tips, cat eye glasses, and a handlebar mustache. he is wearing and oversized blue t-shirt with a white ‘at’ symbol on it and blue pants with patches sewn on. he’s hovering in the air and smiling at the camera. his elytra are grasshopper wings. the top pair are long and thin, and are tan. the bottom pair are triangular and are mostly brown with a green bottom edge.
the final drawing is cleo. they’re a tall, fat zombie with orange snake hair, grey-green skin that has been stitched together, and white eyes with black sclera. she is walking toward the xamera and is wearing a long, flowing, low-cut dark blue dress with gold trim, a split skirt, and gathered sleeves just below the shoulders, black and white striped stockings, blue flowers in her hair, and gold flat shoes. their elytra is a large, tattered, dark blue cloak that resembles huge wings. they are spread up and out behind cleo in an awe-inspiring but menacing manner. end ID.)

I know the dads have talked off handedly about classes for the kiddads but it is safe to say that they play very fast and loose with what each class need to be so here's what classes I think they are
Sparrow - used to be circle of the moon druid but Anthony said he's lost the ability to wildshape so I think he's changed class to hunter ranger specifically looking at the horde breaker feature when dealing with doodlerized mobs
Lark - totem barbarian I was thinking gloomstalker ranger at first but he doesn't give off the spellcasting vibe the bear totem also rewards just throwing yourself at danger which is very lark and also still having the animal association the oaks have and rejecting the magic of the family by literally not being able to cast spells while raging this probably would also keep the doodler out of his mind too
Nicky - he gave me the most trouble because he'd use magic like glenn does where he's not slinging spells around but I think he'd be a draconic bloodline sorcerer like wings and extra damage and just the vibes of him tapping into his hellish ancestry also you can play into the like kinda rocking nicky we saw at the end of s1 and the scary badass nicky we saw at the beginning of s2 with the 18th level feature that I really like
Grant - I know they've said he's a ranger but he again doesn't seem like the spellcasting type even if it's offensive and just because snipers are... ranged that doesn't mean he's a ranger rogues can be long ranged I think he'd be an assassin rogue like he's just a get in get out kinda guy with the massive damage with sneak attack and the assassinate feature also the fact that you get a secret identity with assassin feels very grant he's got a librarian alter ego that is himself
Terry jr. - wizard plain and simple he taught himself magic in roqueport and I think he'd want to keep learning it. I thought bard at first because theater teacher but hes more of a nerd than theater kid I'm thinking either abjuration and him slinging magic shields to protect everyone around him being stupid in battle or strixhaven silverquill has a kind of bard touch and it has some spooky bits that tie into his vampire associations

SHADOWS OF SORCERY | Part 17 | “Shadow of Thread” | 1,642 words
Suggested music listening for the vibes: Darkside by Neoni because Elora has entered her villain era and she’s using her mind control ability
Tumblr media
News of Kaden Brush's near death experience—and his stolen magic core—swept through the school quickly. It was one of the biggest threats a sorcerer could imagine. Having their magic taken from them. The vulnerability was frightening.
Somehow, the Regents Academy of Magic managed to convince the Power Authority to give him a spare magic core—taken from someone undeserving of magic. It was rare for them to redistribute magic.
     Usually, they just destroyed it.
A one-time exception was made. Perhaps to maintain the school's reputation and reduce hysteria. It was an immense grace. But Kaden Brush wasn't exactly immensely grateful.
"This is so dumb…" Kaden said under his breath, while he stood in one of the school’s magic practice rooms. He breathed in and out before he waved and a purple light flashed through the air like a child had waved a sparkler.
It wasn't supposed to be so static.
"Why couldn't they at least give me developer magic? Why do I have to start all over?"
Suddenly, a knock came at the door and Kaden stopped in place.
"This room's taken!" Kaden yelled. But that didn't stop the knocker from entering.
Elora Spade stepped into the training room with her firelights, Imogene following beside her.
"We heard you're a caster now." Elora said. "We thought you could use some help training."
     Kaden made a face.
     "I don't need your help."
"Well, do you think you can help me?" Imogene asked. "I don't really know how to use my casting magic…"
Kaden blinked. What the hell? Is she stupid? I just got my magic. She should know how to use hers.
Imogene refrained from letting her friendly smile crack too much… Some people's thoughts were certainly harder to read than others. Imogene simply moved her hand and demonstrated what she meant—her purple light sparking up in static just like his.
     "Fine."
Elora closed the door and then moved in toward Kaden.
"Well, I'm pretty good at casting," Elora set her hands on his shoulder as she began to position his arm for him, despite the reluctance on his face. "The key is just finding the right flow to control it.”
But her touch sparked something in Kaden's eyes and he jumped back. His memories had all come rushing back to him: targeting Elora on the bike path outside of school grounds and being mind controlled after he scared off her firelights.
     "You're—!"
"Yes." Elora said, gesturing to control his movement so he couldn't escape. "And you're going to tell me everything you know about the person who sent you."
Kaden tensed at the way his body froze in place. He couldn't move.
"I swear—I don't know who he is—." Kaden said.
"What did he ask you to do?"
"Just—just to get you. He said he wanted rare and exceptional abilities. He had a list of people… but he wanted you the most."
"Who else was on the list?"
"I don't know… but he told me not to bother Charlotte Gallison."
Elora traded uneasy looks with Imogene. Then Elora proceeded to cast her energy magic around Kaden, seizing him in pain. Her firelights even flew back to hide behind Elora.
"Where is he keeping all the magic cores?"
"I don't know!" Kaden cried out in pain. "He showed me the room, but it was like a pocket dimension or something. He only let Devin know how to get in. Not me."
"Where did you meet him before that?"
"He always met me at the edge of campus, by the school nature trail."
"Well, maybe you can lure him out there for me. So I can take care of this once and for all."
     "No! Please, he'll kill me!"
Elora fell silent as she released him from her mind control. He dropped to his hands and knees and coughed as he caught his breath.
Imogene sensed his fear and regret while Elora's silence lingered. She glanced over at Elora with a sorry look in her eyes, not wanting to lure him to his potential death. Even if he had tried killing Elora. It just felt too cruel…
     Elora exhaled.
"Well then, what about Devin? Where did he go?"
Kaden lowered his brows at her condescending tone.
"I don't know. He didn't tell me anything. All I know is that the extractor guy gave him a new magic core.”
“Hmm.” Elora shifted her weight onto one leg and mulled it over. The magic cores had to be coming from somewhere. “Alright.” She stepped toward Kaden and he sprang backwards.
     “Wait—what are you—.”
But she controlled him before he got any further away.
“You’re a loose thread. You’re going to forget this conversation.” She set her hands on the sides of his head and looked coldly into his panicked eyes. “And you won’t do anything to help the extractor anymore.”
Elora let go and fell back, watching as Kaden shut his eyes and instinctively held his head at the surge of numbness and pain. She had messed with his head. The effects were still settling into place. It wasn’t just instant. After a few seconds, he opened his eyes in a dazed state.
     “What just happened?”
“Are you okay?” Elora asked. “You just took a hit to the head. You said you could block it.”
Kaden rubbed his head, not remembering anything after Elora had begun to give him pointers.
    “Yeah, I guess…”
Imogene’s brows fell as guilt sank in.
“Why don’t you try to hit me instead?” Imogene said. Suddenly forming a very small energy field in front of herself.
Kaden sighed and shook his head to clear his thoughts. He positioned himself to wave an energy blast at her. He had the right spirit in the whisk of his hand, but the blast separated into static energy clouds that thinned and dissipated before they even reached her energy field. He was still thinking like it was developer magic. Like objects to be conjured.
Elora realized exactly what Imogene was doing. They were supposed to leave after she interrogated him, but Imogene didn’t want to leave him defenseless. Elora exhaled.
“Casting magic is fluid. Think of it like water.” Elora did a demonstration and pushed and pulled a blob of purple light around in the air in front of them. Her firelights hovered excitedly in awe as they gleaned a look.
Kaden didn’t say anything. He simply looked down at his hands and tried to form something similar, on a much smaller scale. It came out more fluid this time. But not perfect. He concentrated on it, and the longer he did, the more it deteriorated.
This was going to take a while.
Tumblr media
They practiced well into the morning, past noon.
Imogene even invited him to grab a bite to eat with them later on, but he declined. The two girls left from there and headed to the campus library, where they checked into a study room. Elora walked right up to a podium with a purple tinted glass pane covering the top and set her palm over it, a magic seal lighting up across it.
“Articles about magic cases near Region: Redwood Sparrow Rivers.”
In a moment, a newspaper lit up and appeared under the glass. Elora glossed it over and pressed her palm to the glass again. A flashy purple light replaced it with a different newspaper. She kept pressing her hand to the glass to reveal the next one in the library’s records.
“So you do remember Kaden tried to kill me, right?” Elora glanced back at Imogene before she resumed browsing.
“I know…” Imogene said guiltily. “But when I read his thoughts… he didn’t understand why he felt so much… I don’t know… apathy for you before? Don’t get me wrong. His thoughts are very… apathetic. And they threatened to take his magic. So there’s that. But what if they have an emotion influencing ability and they used it on him?”
Elora made a squinting face, deep in thought.
“Maybe. But influencing abilities just change your mood. They don’t make you do things you’d never do. Like kill people.”
     “You’re right…” Imogene said. “But…”
     Elora sighed.
     “But what?”
“He just wanted a materialization ability.” Imogene’s voice got sad.
“That’s literally the most common dreamer magic there is… He could have at least tried to kill me for something cool like teleporting. That’s so stupid.”
Imogene fell silent. She stood behind the room's study table and waved her hand over a single spot, conjuring a glass of orange juice alongside a sandwich on a plate. She raised the glass and before she took a sip, she said:
“Is it?” she raised a brow.
     “Oh.”
“Anyway, he thought it would change his family’s life. They’re all realists. They don’t have any dreamer magic.”
“What do you want me to do? Adopt him?”
“No, of course not,” Imogene said. “But do you think you can mind control him one more time?”
Elora raised her brow this time. But before Imogene could elaborate, Elora stopped and stared at the newspaper that came up next. She pressed her hand over the glass and the glass vanished for her to take it.
“Hey… I think these people used to work for Jaelin’s grandfather.”
Elora held the paper out for Imogene to see. It was titled: EMPLOYEES OF CORE MAGIC SYSTEMS SENT POISON CORES.
Tumblr media
They took it down to Jaelin's room and knocked at the door, waiting for him to respond. He opened the door, saw who it was, and cut them both off; rattling off a question:
“Hey—are you starting to think that the person who took Kaden's magic might be the same person we’re looking for? Because I am.” Jaelin stepped aside, revealing all the newspaper articles that covered the corkboard now. They were all about missing sorcerers and missing magic cores.
     Jaelin had certainly been busy.
