i’ve always loved hetalia spain and i remember when i got into hetalia in 2017 i used to go crazy asking my best friend who’s argentinian but grew up in spain about stuff related to spain that i heard in his character songs so im finding texts from years and years ago where we’re talking about cosechas and the fiesta de San Fermín 😭
#because the thing is#i know running of the bulls which totally disavow btw i just didnt know the proper name#of like the entire festival#and cosecha is kinda similar to portugese colheita but i guess i never made the connection lol#now that i think about it in spanish class i lowkey don’t remember ever getting a vocab list or anything 😭😭😭#they just expected is to infer based on Portuguese knowledge which tbh makes sense.#lol#and then you just pick up on the outliers like perro and coche. or just say carro because in some places thats not wrong heh#and deal with the frustration that is gendered articles because it’s infuriating when they dont match Portuguese#sorry but in no way is a trip masculine. it’s a viagem not el viaje#wait. el viaje bothered me like crazy in high school but nowadays it’s not so bad what…. el viage… u r growing on me#hws spain#hetalia#aph spain

does. anyone else experience the language learning pipeline of like
yeah why not seems kinda fun -> (optional step) the writing system is crazy bro -> damn theres no WAY im gonna remember any of this shit -> genuine interest and fascination with the differences between languages and needing to Know more
and its because of the stupidest reason for starting learning it in the first place
#me personally i only started french because i didnt want to do spanish or german#and we had to take a language#now look at me. ap student gonna take the exam in less than two months#did one course for asl because i needed to fill a credit and it seemed easy enough to do online#and i was so interested by deaf culture and i was having sm fun with learning signs#but i never continued it for?? some reason??#i didnt take japanese any further than hiragana and some katakana but it was fun learning the writing system#not that i remember more than maybe 30% of it#and now im trying to learn ukrainian on duolingo and other outside sources#partially just bc i was curious#but now im like. very entranced by it#i have a google doc vocab list and everything#its very fun for me :) even if i dont use it in everyday life and if i drop it after a week#its also so fun to speak#I NEED TO. SHUTUP omfg#tldr languages are sk cool.. to Me.. i should take a linguistics class sometime…

Friendship ended with google sheets, now filofax is my best friend
#i’ve been tying to come up with a system for verb conjugations#like recording all the verbs i’ve encountered in spanish and their conjugations. just in present tense for now and then i will learn#past and future and any other cases or tenses i may need#and i did buy a dedicated language journal (which i’m really enjoying using. it has habit trackers; lots of space for notetaking and doing#textbook exercises; sections for vocab lists and to write out/give examples of grammar rules; journal prompts for writing#in your target language etc) but it only has 48 verb conjugation tables#i have already encountered 77 different verbs in some form or another and recorded their infinitives so that i can table them#even if i’m just focusing on the present tense right now i do not have enough space and i don’t want to clutter up the rest of my note pages#with just conjugation tables#so i needed a system and at first i was going to do a spreadsheet but then i was like realistically i will spend WAY too long on the layout#and i don’t think i’ll actually use it that much because google sheets is so fucking awkward on my phone#i’d have to pull my whole laptop out just to look at this spreadsheet. it won’t be fun. it’ll seem too much like hard work#so i thought okay. what do i actually want from a verb conjugation system. some form of organisation for sure. colour coding#the ability to move stuff around if i want to#so i’m just using my filofax and various pens#it’s a personal size filofax so i can fit two verbs per page plus a couple of sample sentences using the verbs#i am SO much more likely to grab this and use it; especially if i keep it with my main language journal#and i can always add new pages. or if i run out of space i can take out verbs i’m confident with now and replace with verbs i’m trying#to learn. (i’m starting with just the most essential verbs. since that’s the ones i’m usually finding anyway in A1 content)#i’m really happy with this idea tbh. i don’t know if i already said that#personal

"Cien años de soledad" Vocab, Part 1
Welcome to the first annual* vocab list from Gabriel García Márquez's magnum opus!
*not actually annual, probably like every week or something
For some reason, I'm crazy and decided to read though this novel in Spanish to try and better my skills. While it's considered one of the best novels ever written, I've also heard horror stories about its difficulty, so I'm going to be creating a vocab list of things I didn't know while reading to not only help myself but anyone else who comes across this! Let's get started.
aldea (nf) - small village; this word comes up a lot in here so far
cañabrava (nf) - reed
diáfano (adj) - diaphanous, translucent, clear (as of sky), bright (as of light)
lecho (nm) - bed, riverbed
pulido (adj) - polished
carecer (vi) - to lack, to not have; in context here, used with "de nombre" to describe the time period, "many things lacked names"
desarrapado (adj) - ragged, shabby
alboroto (nm) - noise, din, racket
montaraz (adj) - rustic, coarse
gorrión (nm) - sparrow
truculento (adj) - gruesome, horrifying
espantar (vt) - to scare (away)
desenclavar (vt) - to pull out, to remove (forcibly)
desbandada (nf) - jailbreak, (figurative) stampede
pregonar (vt) - to announce, to proclaim
desaforado (adj) - enormous, boundless, immeasurable
desentrañar (vt) - to figure out, to unravel; used here in the context of pulling gold out from the ground
imantar (vt) - to magnetize; used here as a participle "lingotes imantados"
sobrar (vi) - to be left over
empedrar (vt) - to pave, to fill
empeñarse en (v.pron+prep) - to insist on
palmo a palmo (adv. expr.) - in by inch, meticulously
conjuro (nm) - spell, incantation
cascote (nm) - (piece of) rubble
calabazo (nm) - pumpkin, gourd
desarticular (vt) - to break (up), to take apart, to dislocate (medical term)
colgado (adj) - hanging, fixated by, frozen (computer term)
relicario (nm) - reliquary, locket
rizo (nm) - curl, ringlet (of hair), loop
And that was just the first paragraph! That's one thing I've noticed about his writing style, he LOVES very long, drawn out sentences and paragraphs. At this rate, every post might be just one paragraph... We'll see what happens.
Hopefully this is a helpful list to everyone! Look forward to the next lengthy vocab list!

ready, finished listo, lista
Think of a checklist or to-do list: items on the list get checked off when they’re ready or finished.
I’m ready, and the list is almost ready. Estoy listo, y la lista está casi lista.
