since yasammy week is in a month, here are my arabtino™ non-exhaustive culture observations for your fics:

- cheek kiss greeting: both latino and arab cultures do it. you do this when greeting family and friends both. for latinos it’s generally 1-2 and arabs are 2-3. you don’t actually kiss and it’s more of a symbolic gesture where you tap cheeks together (unless it’s like an auntie who’s getting cute aggression). the order is generally left, right (and left again, if it’s 3).

- a lot of spanish words are actually arabic. so if sammy forgets the english word for sugar and said “yaz where is the azucar” then yaz, even without spanish knowledge would know what she meant. cause azucar comes from al-sukkar. this is actually extremely relevant for food specifically. like olive (aceituna/al-zaytunna), basil (albahaca/al-habaq), and rice, orange, watermelon, etc are literally just the same word with a slight accent.

- latinos love dogs. arabs do not. both are fond of cats thought. in islam, dogs and pigs are seen as “dirty” animals (not spiritually. just literally. they’re muddy and islam values cleanliness). so it’s become a common belief even in non-religious communities that dogs are gross and cats, who “bathe” themselves constantly, are the superior pet. I think this is a perfect vessel for sammy wanting a dog and yaz being like “but they roll in dirt…” but sammy gives big sad eyes and yaz sighs like “fine”. similar thing with pigs. lots of latino dishes involve pork but no arab dishes do. which is something yaz might have to get used to (assuming she’s non-muslim in your hc. or maybe they make alternatives or vegan editions).

- we are constantly mistaken for each other. it’s not uncommon to try to speak arabic to latinos or spanish to arabs. their family members definitely might do that. AND! we share some common names. if they have a party and sammy’s cousin omar tries to talk to yaz’ aunt sara… confusion WILL ensue.

- these things, though are extremely shared concepts : big families with close relationships with extended family, calling anyone older than you “auntie/uncle”, calling family friends around your generation “cousin”, hosting guests is an extreme sport where you wait on them hand and foot like they’re the president, using whatsapp, your aunt sending boomer memes in the whatsapp family chat, no shoes in the house unless they’re special indoor slippers (9/10 they are adidas slides), white tanktop as lounge wear, looking down at white american culture and food, LOTS of seafood (if u hc them as being from costal countries of the regions), plastic chairs outside where adults sit and chat over drinks (most active hours are after the sun starts going down bc it’s hot), still using clothesline drying because you don’t fix what isn’t broken, can also apply to hand washing dishes but dishwashers are on the rise, watching 12 season badly produced TV dramas in your language with extremely camp-y plots

Born to Hench, Forced to “Boss!!”

I’m not a Minion hater exactly—no more so than I am, ambiently-like, of anything “mainstream” or “popular.” At the same time, I also don’t tend to engage with any media in a “lol so wacky I’m going INSANE from exposing myself to this!” sort of way either. When I really think about it, you could see the Minions as particularly cynical, like the Disney animal sidekick thing on steroids. They have a simple, pleasant design (emphasizing the body/head, deemphasizing the limbs and fine detail) with room for a smidgeon of individuality/visual flexibility using a satisfyingly limited number of features or elements like eyes, and which makes them more or less Engineered for Marketability as a toy or just plastered on one thing or another. There’s an enormous Minion (I think) sticker around here somewhere that a friend of mine gave me once when I was visiting him that he (I think) got from a cereal box as a “prize.” It’s my understanding that Minion memes were somewhat ubiquitous on Facebook at one point, though I can also easily imagine adults (namely parents) harboring a deep-seated hatred of these things.

Upon initially firing up Minions (2015) and hearing those eminently recognizable chattering voices “singing” the Universal Pictures theme, I thought my fears were going to be confirmed—that this was going to be a very annoying movie for me. I imagined being a parent in one room hearing that tell-tale sound for the umpteenth time coming from a TV in another, and what that might feel like. I didn’t end up following this “lol so wacky I’m going etc.” thread any further, though, because I actually found the Minions (and their movie) pretty easy to like!

On the one hand, yes, they are adorable: visually, but also in terms of personality and thanks to the ambiguity of their emotional and intellectual maturity. The Bob character, in particular, is very child-esque, but all of the Minions are vaguely characterized in this same way, and so it’s easy to feel drawn to them in their extremes of feeling, to want to nurture or at least pet them. “Part child, part dog” may be another intentional element of their design, meant to reach children and parents and childless adults all in some primal way. Ironically, the chattering wasn’t an annoyance, and I think it may actually have made the predictably goofy and usually physical humor I expected from the movie more palatable. Rather than an endless slog of “That was SO awesome!” or other “That just happened!”-adjacent running commentary on every precious goof, you instead get these intervals (sometimes surprisingly long for such a movie) where no coherent sentence is uttered. The Minions speak a winning mix of total gibberish and real language (English, Spanish, etc.), and I’ll be damned if there isn’t a certain… confidence to having that be the medium of communication, visuals aside, of bits and pieces of this movie.

On another hand, I find the very concept of a “Minion” kind of fascinating. The movie starts with an initially wordless sequence showing off Minion evolution—how from their most primitive, water-bound state they’ve always latched onto the largest and most dangerous other creatures without conflict, which is a compulsion that takes them onto the land and forward through history until they gravitate toward humans and then “supervillains” specifically. The Minions are apparently immortal(?) and so, critically, out-live their beloved masters, sometimes apparently killing them by accident. I know I’m late to the Minions party in this regard, but that’s just such a weird and compelling baseline concept. Minions being so “Assigned Henchman at Birth” while also potentially, actually being the superior animal just makes for an interesting hook.

While Minions has a recognizable-enough dramatic plot, I found it kind of oddly… “empowering” to watch. You don’t so much feel tension or stress about the scraps and scrapes the Minions get into, so much as you eagerly wait to see how they’ll easily overcome the inconvenience and defeat their enemies. I’m not joking when I say that the Minions have more in common with Alucard from the manga/anime Hellsing than they do with other protagonists in similar movies. They’re essentially “over-powered.” There are some great, fun bits of action or imagery here, though a favorite might be when the Minions’ boss-turned-enemy, Scarlet Overkill, tries to have them tortured, and this includes a bit where the Minions are gleefully slipping through and playing around with a noose. It’s fleetingly dark, perhaps surprisingly daring.

(Of course, the “3 edgy 5 you” take that I’ve even heard out in the real world about the Minions is “lol Did they work for Hitler? lol” And this movie makes clear that, no, they did not. After serving Napoleon, the Minions were in exile in an icy cave until 1968, thus avoiding the Harry Potter problem of mixing magical beings and the Holocaust.)

I was also just surprised at how twisty the plot of Minions is. I did not expect Bob to pull the mythical Sword from the Stone, or for the spurned, exploded Scarlet to return for one last attempt at the Queen of England’s crown when it felt like the movie was already over. I had a harder time thinking of really distinct swerves than I expected writing this up, but it’s all just kind of inherently Interesting. The way that this world pivots around professional villainy (even if only in secret circles) reminded me a little bit of The Venture Bros. This still isn’t evil evil—It’s easy enough to see the Minions as conventionally likeable if not exactly heroic and Scarlet Overkill as conventionally threatening and villainous, but it’s a fun enough, kid-friendly flirtation that at least sort of eschews predictable plotting.

There are some character designs that rely a bit on fatphobic imagery for their visual identity/comedy potential, but I think the most offensive thing about the movie is its treatment of The Queen, who cutesily throws down with the Minions when they attempt to steal her crown for Scarlet and who is hanging out at a pub arm wrestling after she’s dethroned. Her toothiness might qualify as gentle caricature, but I would have (cruel Leftist that I am) preferred a much meaner treatment. I mean, really, the Minions should be latching onto her, right? What with the whole legacy of colonialism and so forth? Her being a sort of apex thief and whatnot?

I jest—Obviously, that’s far too subversive and cerebral for such a Childish property! The Minions are instead drawn to the biggest cartoon of villainy, which means Scarlet at first but then ultimately a young Gru. Minions almost tells a standalone story using the critters but then has to wrap back around to Despicable Me, which means there’s a heavy Gru emphasis at the very end and during the little credits sequences. I would have preferred that it not do this (and also that Scarlet be an anthropomorphized wolf-woman for the entire movie and not just the “bedtime porry” scene), but I know this isn’t really For me, in the end, and have just accepted that with as good as a shrug. Which is how I’ve felt about the Minions as a property and/or marketing gimmick for years now.

My submission for @dbshipsweek. Coincidentally, I found out about the ship week during my planning of this meme and decided to submit it for this fun event. It may not be as awesome as some of the awesome art submitted by talented artists such as LongMonthArtist, SweetEscapeArtist or DBZsenpai, but I still think there can be enjoyment out of this meme.

Why did I make this? Well, I'll tell you since you didn't ask.

I was curious as to how certain scenes from Dragon Ball Super were done in its Spanish dub. They were decent as far as I could tell. But the one that took my breath away was 18's Tournament moment. No matter which language, her moment is always an amazing mix of sweetness, bad assery, and spectacle. But the Spanish dub found a way to increase that K18 sweetness by adding the words "mi amor" when she spoke Krillin's name. "Mi amor" is Spanish for "my love." There exists a version of this scene where 18 refers to Krillin as "her love." WOW! That slaps. So naturally, I went to work on bringing this discovery to the public in a humorous fashion.

However, I must admit that "mi amor" in context of the Spanish language is more of a nickname; it's the Spanish equivalent to English's "honey" or "sweetie", which Krillin already does in the English dub. But still! The fact that she says it in the Spanish dub just . . . just . . . hits different.

Now for the disclaimer: I am not claiming that the Spanish dub of DBS is the best dub of the series, nor do I think the English dub is superior or worse to the original Japanese dub. This was just my way of bringing appreciation to the Spanish dub. Please don't make a dub war out of this; you are allowed to rank the dubs however you like. This was done for the purposes of fun and not for dub/sub hating.

(During moments of self-awareness) he regrets the person he's become now. He knows his behaviour is unlikeable and indecent, because of this ofc most everyone around him hates him or is scared of him- which leads him to not being able to bring his kids out in public (or alternatively, he gives them a bad reputation when they become adults because of who they're related to) because he's scared they might get hurt as a result of people who hate him; he knows it's his fault for this outcome, but he hates everyone around him (that aren't his children) and just refuses to let go. He resents humanity for how much he has been pushed around, mocked and hurt physically in the past for just existing. He doesn't think anyone is worthy of recieving genuine kindness because deep down they're all just as disgusting as he is. This leads to ego and self-importance that makes him feel superior to others because he's not scared of showing just how revolting one can be + he's not human anymore + he's immortal + he can control/speak to hoards of cockroaches.

He also regrets having placed his distaste for humanity so high he's passed it down on his first generation of children. For the most part, this has caused a few of his children to distance themselves from him, like for example Judith and Kolvenik, which hurt him deeply. Kolvenik flat out blames his father and his hatred for humanity as to why he's developed his genetic disorder that has caused him to permanently shed off his human disguise as he got older (which is completely incorrect just to clarify; how Rotgut feels towards mankind has nothing to do with Kolvenik's genetic issue, he just hates and resents his father mostly as a form of projecting his own self-hatred living as a humanoid bug monster that can't have a human form).

Rotgut tries to better himself non-stop when it comes to raising his newest kids, because he wants to see them be happy and make friends and connections, be likeable and be liked by others regardless of what species they are, unlike him. This makes him a bit hypocritical since when he's on his own, he openly goes back to his old ways & antics- with his kids however he just kind of puts on a mask.

We’re pretty used to clichéd memes!  Some of these ‘inspirational’, ‘motivational’ or pseudo-philosophical messages roll round time and time again.  You know the ones I mean!  But one meme kinda stopped me in my tracks yesterday.  It said, “Be careful with your words.  Once they are said, they can only be forgiven not forgotten.”  That’s a killer, innit?  There are some words that have been said to me that I will NEVER forget! 

I had to turn down work yesterday.  I haven’t seen the hostess for almost 20 years but I was still her first-choice DJ, which felt good.  Glad I made such a big impression.  I hate turning down work but we got an invitation to a party months ago, same date as the gig, I was grateful for the invite, we accepted the invite and we will be going to that party!    

On Sunday night, unbelievably, I got the chance to write.  50,000 words and counting.  A major part of finishing a project – whatever it is – is time management.  And being awake, of course, that helps!

I was able to write because The Trouble was quite happy in the front room watching programmes about English people renovating property and running businesses in Spain and France.  She loves these shows.  They combine three of her favourite subjects: business, architecture and building.  Interestingly, the Spanish and French people are very tolerant of these English immigrants.  She sits there are says, “If I win the lottery …”  I wonder?  Where would I like to spend my final days?    

You know what word obsesses me?  Superiority.  It’s amazing that some people think they are superior to me.  They are up there and I am down here.  They have superior blood, superior skin, superior genes, superior taste, superior culture.  Like a gift from the gods, they are superior in every way.  And these people have a strange sense of entitlement, don’t they?  As in, the law is important and applies to everyone … except them!

One from México City, the other from New Granada, One who’s family owned many properties, the other, who if Isabel’s observations were any indication, seemed to have worked the land her family owned- not that Elena had allowed her sister to ask outright. One whose family was helping lead the fight for independence, the other whose family was being affected by it all. That anyone would be so openly cruel, It made Elena’s blood boil on Luisa’s behalf.

Here is a remake…

So yeah, this is a new version of one of my first drawings of Twisted Wonderland. The original was drawn with my old tablet (that recently stopped working). I decided to make this new version for two reasons:

Is the evolution of my style+ I draw on my phone that doesn’t have the old age restrictions my tablet did.

Kinda wanted to new people on the fandom to have a superior drawing of this cursed thing.

If you know me, you already can tell I made that background with Ibis Paint’s free textures. Cause the original photo was a mess anyway.

This term colorism was coined from Alice Walker on her classical womanist text "in search of our mothers' garden "in 1983. She described it as "prejudicial preferential treatment of the same race people based on solely on their color". Colorism is credited during the colonial times case study Philippines in the time it was ruled by the Spaniards in in the years between 1502-1812. With colonizers such as Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, the Spanish people established both a colonial government and a class system. This class system was divided into three. These division was based on color that is: pure Spaniards, mestizos (were lighter with more westernized body features and were half cast between the Spaniards and the natives) Only these Spaniards had the ability to occupy the highest seats in the Catholic Church, the top seats in government. Mestizos were often educated and were given luxuries such as land and servants. The native Filipino people (the indies) had access to none of that but to work in the rice and sugar fields. Another case study is in South Africa where they were divided in three social class the whites mainly the people from Caucasian decent and a little from the Mongolian decent. These were like the first-class people they had all the rights that is they could participate in the government access to better social amenities like education and health care. They were easily employed that is the managerial position. The second class were the colored people (who were lighter with more westernized body features and were half cast between either the British or the Dutch in South Africa) who can take place in elections and participate in the government as representatives of themselves and the natives and get position in employment in position like supervisors. The bottom tier were the natives with no voting rights a lot of manual labor with minimal pay. Here we see where colorism originated and how its affecting different parts the world.

Colonisation had a key role in defining what beautiful is .They popularised the thought that Western beauty ideals that is being thin and tall, having long hair, having light/tanned skin, having big breasts, large eyes, a small nose, and high cheekbones is a superior look.

India’s skin lightening cream, Fair and Lovely, boasts 38 million users worldwide. People have all internalized these messages, and they are hard to escape. Colorism has made most people to have low self-esteem and has promoted industry like the cosmetics industries.

The word “beautiful” has meant hundreds of different things throughout the course of history, it becomes a whole lot easier to see those standards not as some powerful truth, but as just one more idea of what beauty can be.

According to one group member says that the concept of colorism and western beauty standards in that women especially in Philippines, Caribbean South and central America and Africa apply makeup that makes them lighter to boost their confidence. Other countries like the south Korea go as far as to get a cosmetic surgery that is like a nose job in order to comply to the western beauty standards. These memes give as a glimpse of how colorism and Westernized beauty standards are prevalent in different parts of the world in the present.

Conclusion We should embrace our features that is African, Hispanic, south Asians, Indians and Caucasian and mixed race as equal beauty standards. We should respect each other and treat each other with no basis color race or beauty. All in all, beauty is not comparative or definitive you are what you choose to be. Everyone has beauty but not everyone sees it.
