Fall, 1943, Sicily
When allied forces came to Sicily, and the news reached Lovino, he started gathering what little he had. He did what he should’ve done months ago. Had he been brave enough, trusting enough that his people could take care of themselves. Had he been able to let go of the pride and stubbornness keeping him here, things might’ve been different for them. Maybe everyone was right. He was scared to leave, not for the sake of his people, but for the risk of what he would find in Spain.
Leaving Antonio in Spain to go back to Italy a few years prior almost broke him. Had it not been for the sake of his country, his people – He left half of his heart with Antonio, and was hardly able to give the other half to his birthplace.
Barcelona,
My beloved, my beloved, my beloved, my beloved, my beloved… Lovino closed his eyes and pictured the likelihood of Antonio taking his hands, how they’d kneel in front of each other. He felt the softness of his lips on the back of his hand, and would know that Antonio too, had prayed for this day.
He stood outside the house in Barcelona, pale in the moonlight, and looked at the window where he knew the bedroom would be. He took his time to let his heartbeat come down, before he turned the handle and made his way into the two-story building. “Antonio?” He whispered. Their portraits along the staircase stared back at him. His dark eyes were so different then. He wondered what his younger self saw. Something rustled from above, and he froze. It was as if the world stopped, in an excruciatingly long moment, before he dared to say something again. In the darkness, he held his breath as he waited for an answer.
He heard the sounds of a lamp being lit and saw footsteps lit up from behind the door.
“... Who’s there?” Without answering, Lovino climbed the last few steps, and opened the door. Something other than surprise flew across Antonio’s face. He gasped, and couldn’t help the tears that sprung to his eyes. “Lovino, oh, Lovino, it’s you-!” The embrace was tight, their every curve fitting right against each other. Now they were home. Lovino closed his eyes. Antonio exhaled and hid his face against Lovino’s collar. Long, drawn out sobs shook his body. “Antonio, I’m here… What is it?”
Boston, New York, 1946,
A year after the war, they were still recovering. Though together, and making up for lost time, their relationship had turned somber, and brought a lot of past wrongs along with them. They had gone to America to escape, but it only brought to light what was wrong between them. The days were gray, it was cold, and they were often confined to the small apartment.
Lovino’s planned confession died when he learned that Antonio had been with France in his absence, and he blamed himself for not coming to Barcelona sooner. “You’ve not minded before,” Antonio reminded him. He was neither right nor wrong, and it frustrated Lovino. He did not answer, and Antonio left him alone.
It had been Antonio that suggested they left for America. He had been in the same place for a decade, and he wanted to get away from a war-plagued Europe. Lovino agreed, hopeful and happy they could finally just be them, and start something.
When Antonio returned later that evening, drunk and sorrowful and stumbling to lay his head in Lovino’s lap and apologize, he wished they had never come here.

what other hetalia ships do you like? :0 i've only known you as the engita guy
i feel so honoured to be the Engita guy 😽 Short answer, over the years I’ve loved a lot of pairs:
- Gripan!!!!!
- Robul
- Lietpol
- Romerica
- America x Kenya ( I call it AmeKen)
- Egypt x Cyprus
- India x Thailand
There are some i’m forgetting i know it.
Some more questionable ones I’ve enjoyed are:
- Spamano
- Rochu
- Canfran / Franada
- My first ever ship was Usuk (😿)
- HongIce (bc I was their ages at the time)
Long answer, it’s kinda tricky bc I barely care about the canon show & literally just stole the character designs & personalities to make up my own worlds about? No cap the first 5 years i was in the online fandom i had not watched ONE episode of hetalia 😭 (literally amungus).
So for a long time I didn’t actually realize america & england (spamano, canfran, etc.) had like a father-son dynamic? or all the other questionable war, genocide, colonization-centred pairings lol. Out of nostalgia, still don’t mind enjoying some pairs, but also LARGELY because I actually care very little about nationverse stuff & just like the idea of hot men of different nationalities. miss me with those politics🤕😼
in my canon of the nationverse anyway, those colonized/colonizer ships wouldn’t be related since nations like us & canada didn’t “become” nations after other nations showed up (and i think that concept is kinda questionable).
regardless i think it’s fine & more true to the show canon if people do see certain nations related. I just don’t hc some characters as relatives (and there are some characters that aren’t canon related but i do consider them related!) & would NEVER EVER EVER ship anything as intentionally inc*st 😭😭😭 I need to make that SO CLEAR.

More on historical Spamano???
Okay idk how much sense this will make because that post came to me in a burst of realization and I haven’t explored Spain very thoroughly before (my speciality as a fic writer is the Ancient Mediterranean and pre-Italian Unification OCs) But there are two contexts in which I’ve discussed Spain:
The first is in “Sons of Naught”, a fic set immediately after Third Punic War, wherein Rome enslaves all of Carthage’s living descendants. Primarily, this fic focuses on my Tuscany OC taking pity on my Tunisia OC, but as Romulus is discussing his plans for his newly enslaved nations with Tunisia, this exchange occurs:
Africanus grew pale. “And what of Sakar—” he caught himself before he finished, and masking his anxiety, continued, “What of Antonius?”
“Oh, worry not, Africanus. I have no designs for him such as those you think. Recall that your father started these wars in Sicily. When we fought at Messana, my men found an infant there, who was Sicily immortal, and my own blood.
“Bearing that in mind, I declare that Antonius be given to Lovinus as an attendant.”
Lovinus looked at Antonius. Antonius looked at Lovinus. Neither spoke; it was neither’s place to do so when Romulus did.
Because Lovino’s existence is connected to the start of the Punic Wars (and because, as per a previous paragraph in the fic, Spain and Portugal are too young to really be useful as slaves) Romulus kind of just hands Antonio over for Lovino to deal with, something that Lovino must have relished.
Antonio was, for all intents and purposes, living proof that Lovino’s success as a nation was guaranteed, because Romulus was an empire who could not only kill other nations like Carthage or Etruria, but actually enslave them, something that’s implied to be especially cruel on Romulus’ part, since the enslavement will only end either when Romulus falls from power or the enslaved nations die for real.
And as we all know, Rome did fall, and Romulus’ death was a pivotal moment for both Lovino and Antonio. Everyone Romulus had enslaved in “Sons of Naught” (except for my Sardinia OC) ransacked the house and escaped to the lands they represented, knowing that Lovino was too powerless to claim ownership of them any more.
As far as Lovino goes as a character, his entire identity was constructed around being Romulus’ heir—if he has no great empire to inherit, he is nothing. The playing field has been leveled, and he has to start from scratch the same way Carthage’s orphaned descendants must. Only for Sicily, though powerful, to be conquered time and time again. Only for Feliciano (who I hc as Venice prior to unification) to totally eclipse him in wealth and trade.
And only, of course, for Lovino to end up a servant in Spain as Antonio becomes the next big power in Europe. Now, until my dying breath, I’m gonna stumble around Chibitalia because there’s no way the Italy bros specifically were as young during this period as they’re shown in the show, but I do believe that Lovino’s physical growth (his age) stunted for a while during this period. Not a good sign for a nation. (see HRE staying a child for centuries before slowly and painfully perma-dying.)
Which brings me to the second example of me talking about Spain in my fics: in “A Sicut Erat”, in which my Sardinia OC reflecting on his life and downfall while he dies at the end of WW2, there’s this section about Spain’s golden age:
And in the mansion in Zaragoza, Lovinus, then called Lovino, had been humiliated once again.
“As his grandfather renamed ourselves,” Antonio explained to Nicola in the light of the fire one night, “I have renamed him and his brother both. They bear the Spanish name Vargas.”
And how miserable time had made Lovino! Sicily had amassed wealth and power, but the boy had aged only a few human years since the last time Nicola had seen him. Lovino burned with shame wherever he went, muttering curses as he swept the floors, retorting Antonio’s every word with a biting tongue. From time to time, he was struck by fits of St. Vitus’ dance, knocking over vases and tripping over his own feet, and secretly, in the pits of the night, Nicola prayed that it meant he would see the boy’s death.
Those were the days when Spain ruled the seas, and so it seemed, the world. A slave of Rome had risen to the same level as him, if not greater: so much was the gold from the New World that its glisten became dull! The merchant ships of Genoa, who had conquered Sardinia, and Venice, Romulus’ rich and happy grandson, became powerless in the face of the brave new world that formed in the West!
Now, the whole renaming thing was just me trying to make the Italy Bro’s Spanish surname make sense 😭 but in another sense, this passage shows that the tables have turned. Antonio is now Romulus, Lovino is now Antonio, and with a new world quite literally opening up for the powers of Europe to imperialize, it seems like Lovino is just…doomed. Trade is shifting from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic. A new Roman Empire can never rise again, least of all under Lovino, and to him, promised a world that collapsed under his feet, that’s a fate worse than death.
But that’s not the end of the story either! Spain declines around the 18th century, and Sicily in the 19th as Lovino gets screwed over by Italian Unification (read Brutus and Achilles if you want more insight into this and other aspects of Lovino’s character 👀) but they’re both still alive, and they’re still the people they always were. They have always been bound together for some reason or another, and because neither is nearly as powerful as they once were, they are also now even.
Idk if that made sense, but there’s a lot of twists and turns in their lives that make for a compelling relationship between the two. Not even in a shipping way, necessarily. Add in their conflicting personalities though and oooooooh baby that’s good stuff.
I need to get a life lol

i saw you say that you’re take on spamano diverts from canon and honestly i’d love to know more about it, i feel like most spamano shippers do this and i love hearing all takes because i feel like they’re all interesting! and i love them so so much!! do you have any hc’s that you think are unpopular with the fandom?? or do you like they way spamano is represented for the most part??
Hi! Thanks so much for the ask 💕 If you're the same anon who sent the last one I'm working on it. To answer honestly, I don't interact with Spamano fanwork enough to know what is and isn't popular or accepted as fanon these days.
But I'll hesitantly say that no, I think my views on this ship differ from that of the fandom status quo, as they usually do. I don't say this for the sake of being edgy or a need to always play contrarian, but bc I have a unique perspective.
Disclaimer; long post ahead. my opinion was asked for and you're about to receive it. Everything stated is opinion and I'm not discrediting alternate headcanons.
So I'll start by saying I'm not an expert on Spain's history or characterization. I have mentioned this before but the way Himaruya chose to portray him is a bit odd to me. Then again, Hetalia nations aren't really direct representations of their government, but instead stereotypes of their people. If everyone was accurate they'd all be unsympathetic assholes.
Spain as an empire was once a ruthless colonial force, and as a nation in more recent centuries they have a history of fascist rule, violent uprising and general civil discord.
Spain as a character is a sunny, bubbly himbo after he lost his reputation as a global power. I think he has a tendency to downplay the harm he's caused in the past and manipulate others into viewing him as a shiny happy goofy airhead.
Don't get me wrong, I think Antonio is adorable. He's cute, right? Dude's main personality trait is having a GREAT ASS 🍑 and liking tomates 🍅 He loves to cook and dance and do fuck all. The Hetalia wiki describes him as a, quote, 'cheerful country bumpkin' and honestly, let's go with that for the sake of his personhood?
This is why I like human AU. I enjoy reading historical Hetalia, but writing it isn't for me. As a creative, I don't want to operate within the limits of real world events and not gonna lie I prefer writing them as people!! And that's where I exercise some divergence from canon.
So obviously there's the dynamic of boss and his underling that existed when Romano was young. We can't entirely ignore that that arc exists and is part of his character development, but when Romano grows up I don't see them that way, and there's no denying their romantic potential.
I hear, and understand the common criticisms of Spamano. I don't view them as related, and Romano is not Spain's territory anymore. To me it's fair game. Hetalia is complicated bc well... these nation-beings are hundreds of years old, therefore the case for morality in shipping isn't black and white.
Personally I don't believe any ship is 'too problematic' to exist. I'm of the opinion that we can explore just about any dynamic in fiction as long as we do it mindfully. I'm a multishipper, these characters are all so versatile.
This might sound silly to say about an anime character but my analysis of Romano's personality is more in depth. As someone of Italian descent I recognize his stereotypical traits; and feel pretty strongly about his mischaracterization.
For one, he has a small dog Napoleon complex and that's a big thing for Italian guys (more on that later)
In canon (i.e. world history and Hetalia itself) when Romano was young, Spain did spend a lot of money protecting and defending him. Now as an adult he feels guilty, like he has an obligation to him, and he doesn't want to be seen as weak, reliant or incapable ever again. I don't think he'd allow himself to be dominated, in any way, or even want to be.
Here's an unpopular opinion; he is very masculine, but I think people have a hard time comprehending what constitutes masculinity.
And I'm not saying Antonio is therefore feminine. They're both cis men to me, and switch in the bedroom, but I will admit I prefer Lovino as the generally more dominant partner - in a physical and hierarchical sense.
Ultimately I don't think they box themselves into heteronormative roles all too much. Maybe for funsies, because Lovino likes feeling needed and Antonio to me doesn't have the discipline it takes to wear the proverbial pants in the relationship.
In a comic strip, Spain proposed to Romano when same-sex marriage became legal, and he basically said yes as long as you cook for me?? They're husbands!! It's canon 😎
It's a bit hard to explain, but in my perspective, Lovino would protect and cherish Antonio like a man would his 'wife'. He's his Carino. His Tesoro. His Amorino. Toni might be taller than him, but he's always talking to him like a child - mostly affectionately, but we've seen otherwise.
One of my favourite Romano lines is from the April Fools episode, "No talking to me when you look stupid", that to me is a defining moment of their relationship 💖💖💖
So anyway, this attitude of his brings me to the topic of Maschismo. If you're not familiar with that term, it's a performative, arrogant, and fragile brand of toxic masculinity that's prevalent in men of Mediterranean and Latin American descent. Any man can be machismo but the term is associated with these cultures.
(Again I'm of Mediterranean descent, I have lived experience with this, please don't think I'm racist and if that's legitimately your takeaway you have the reading comprehension of a sea cucumber)
In machismo society, men are discouraged from showing any emotion except anger. They're expected to be strong, and are extremely affected by any implication of personal failure, or threat to their (imagined) role as top dog. When something upsets them, aggression is the default response.
Men affected by machismo are often possessive, competitive, and motivated by material success; because there's an expectation to provide for - and honor - your family. They will often talk over women, objectify or ignore them completely, like second class citizens.
Whether this was a conscious intention or not, Hima actually does a great job at displaying Romano as a machismo poster boy. He's simultaneously expressive and repressed. He's stubborn, defensive and argumentative, and if that doesn't say Italian dad to you then you're probably a WASP /hj
What the fandom might see as a little tsundere uke, I see as machismo tough guy. He's not soft, that's the thing, but he deserves space to be soft because so does everyone. Maybe Antonio does bring that out in him. But it's not easy and it's not for anyone else to see. He pretends to hate when Toni calls him cute because he doesn't allow himself to feel appreciated on that level. He actually has a deep, unspoken respect for Antonio. It's just easier to tease him.
And he actually does care. He just does it in a way that isn't instantly recognisable as caring because it's not 'gentle'. He's jealous of Feliciano because he's the 'nice' brother. He's concerned for Feli when others mistreat him. That concern and protectiveness translates into condescension and ironically, distancing.
Sorry for going so in depth on what is essentially old man land mass yaoi, if you've read this far thank you and congratulations I guess.

Tumblr media
Yes yes yes I love you spamano,,, save me spamano,,,
(Important disclaimer I should make once again- I age the itabros more ‘normally’ in my HCs. So there is none of that weird centuries-long chibitalia thing. Not for the sake of shipping, but more for the reason ‘why are they that young for that long it’s kinda dumb’)
I adore this ship aghhh. They’ve been in each other’s lives since childhood and they know each other so incredibly well. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows of course. Romano with his internalized homophobia, being part of the Spanish empire and feeling an unbalance in the relationship, Antonio being overbearing and even a lil possessive sometimes, etc. They had a lot of growing and maturing to do in order to achieve a stable relationship, and I think that’s very interesting to explore! Their relationship history is long and complex <3
I have different timelines for their relationship: one of them being they never ACTUALLY became a couple until the mid-late 20th century, and another one where they were a couple for a while up until ~1848- where Romano broke things off because he grew tired of the ‘status quo’ and wanted some change (they then got back together in the 20th century).

Listen, listen, I need to know your hcs too, alright? I neeeeeeeed your Denmark hcs, since he's your dad x'D, and I need your Romano hcs, and your Spain hcs. No need to answer all of it at once.
All of the headcanons?! Right now? We'll never finish! D:
If it's not all at once, let's just go with a few for each for now.
Denmark: All nations have some artistic inclinations, of course, because every nation got art, culture, and literature, but I think Denmark really has the soul of a poet. For most of the medieval period, he didn't exactly get to show that, because there was always so much pressure on him to be the leader of the Kalmarunion and to be strong in battles, but he always liked the arts – when that pressure lessened (which was not a good experience for him), he allowed himself to indulge in that part of himself more. Even so, his form of poetry is never just to evoke pretty images, there's often an ironic slant to it. Another headcanon I have is that Denmark can drink anyone under the table if it's beer. Yes, even Russia. Anyone and everyone. He can do it.
The problem with Spain and Romano headcanons is that they've been in my head for so long that I literally cannot remember if it's canon or headcanon, and I just write it into my fanfiction. Even so, I will try!
Romano: I'm just gonna say it. I headcanon Romano as he/they. There's just something so enby about them. I've probably said it previously, but I think Romano is only nice to tourists, ladies, and old people. It's one of my favourite headcanons about him, so I want to say it again. Okay, okay, I know this is cheating, because I also kind of put it in a fanfic, but Romano is better at Italian dialects than Italian, and he is really bad at even imitating a non-southern accent in Italian (at least the nation version of him, aus are a different beast entirely). Doubling letters, especially consonants, is just more natural to him.
Spain: He never brings an umbrella for anything. He can look out the window and see it's raining, and he still doesn't bring an umbrella. Most of the time, he forgets they exist. Spain exists in this paradox which is that he's really bad at modern technology, but somehow also has the phone skills of a teenager. Like, his boss can ask him to send something as a pdf and he manages to send the wrong file three times, and when he finally gets the correct file, he sends it as a .doc. He always prints everything (leading to many fights with the printer), because he sometimes manages to delete the file when he closes it. At the same time, he "txt liek dis 😂😂😂🙌😋😋🙌💕💕💕" and knows how to use all the hip filters.
One spamano (because it is necessary): Spain really did get a pet turtle after the events of that one episode with the turtles. Romano got it for him, and Spain refers to it as their child.

1. What OTPs in your fandom(s) do you just not get?*
Spamano. That’s just straight up pedophilia I don’t understand why people like it. Like yeah I see the common excuse of “I don’t like the canon ages thst hima used so I don’t think he was a child” but the thing is…you still interacted with the canon, watched an adult and child interact, and decided that you were going to ship it. That type of excuse almost always comes after some decides to ship something.
2. Are there any popular fandom OPs you only
BroTP?*
Spamano and usuk and denor
3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?
Yes :)
4. Do you have a NoTP in your fandom? Are they a popular OTP>*
Usuk and spamano so yes
5. Has fandom ever ruined a pairing for you?*
Yup! Gerita. I can’t stand N Italy as a character anymore.
6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?*
Hmmmm…I don’t think so?
7. Is there anything you used to like but can't stand now?*
I’m certain but I can’t think.
8. Have you received anon hate? What about?*
HAHAHAAHAHA yes.
Pointing out racism, giving people a safe space to send in disability hcs, making a character fat, giving a character vitiligo (which I have lmao), pointing out that some characters have some abusive traits, and some other stuff I’m sure.

Little drabble is up about a rough timeline of their relationship from 1900-post WW2
Lovino went back to Italy probably around the unification and lived there permanently, occasionally visiting Antonio, but something is different in their relationship.
After the wars, they don't wanna risk being apart anymore, and go all in in their (romantic) relationship, committing to something that has been brewing since the later middle ages.

HC: Family Conflicts
When Luciano and Martín made their relationship official, the families had to adapt.
Arthur avoids every family meeting where Martín is also present. He only shows up when only Luci is there.
Unknown to the Brarg couple, Afonso and Lovino had intense fights over where they were going to have lunch or who was cooking.
When Afonso cooked, Lovino would bring his own food to lunch, even though it was decided he wouldn't. This pissed Afonso so much, he would passive-agressively complain about the lasagna having too much salt, too much garlic or tomato sauce.
Actually, Lovino and Afonso started fighting a lot after Lu and Martín got together: neither admiting the other criticized the way their kids were raised. They tried to keep it between themselves, but the 'kids' realized there was tension between them.
Lovino and Afonso are both very insecure, Lovi was jealous of Afonso's bond with Antonio ever since they were kids, while Afonso feels Lovino is purposely pushing him away from both Antonio and Luciano by assuming the new parent role.
Another source of conflict is whenever all the couples get together. Luci and Martín on one side, Antonio and Lovino on the other, while Afonso feels like a 5th weel since he can't bring Arthur and is stuck on his own while the couples have their double dates. It doesn't help that both couples are extremely affectionate and physical with each other, which adds to the awkwardness.

Yo I think I just figured out a reason why Spain and Romano like each other so much
In effect, they have the same sort of fucked up sibling relationship. Like they love their brothers so much but it doesn't always feel like that love is returned, or at least not in the way they'd like it to be. Spain is like. Admiring the hell out of portugal and doesn't feel like gabriel really cares- maybe he thinks he has to act flashier and weirder to get port's attention, and just ends up embarrassing himself in the process. Of course that's how he acts in order to get anyone's attention. And then roma..his relationship with veneziano is the most interesting relationship in hetalia and you can fight me on that. Anyway he kinda has the same sort of impulsive need to please veneziano while also kinda hating him bc he's jealous and vene is an asshole. But he feels like he's gotta be good enough for him and vene really doesn't care so it's awkward.
Anyway it gets even more complicated when you bring in the whole. Boss Spain and chibimano thing. Realistically I disagree with that (Romano was like at least 14 when that was happening) but it does inform their characters so it's like. Another layer of Romano's mental shit. He relates so hard to this guy who tried to control him and it's awful. He really can't stand it when ppl try to tell him what to do so it makes his relationship with spain kinda painful bc same family issues and you know they do mesh well together and all but spain did sort of destroy half the world when roma was at his house while also not being a dick to Romano. So he was always sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop, having seen and known of the genocide that happened in the americas. But at the same time. He still likes spain. They still vibe together even though they can't really explain it. And its so confusing for both of them, but they react in such different ways- spain is just so happy around Romano n tries to be around him as much as he can but Romano is the king of pointless angsting so he gets dramatic as hell about it
Anyway sorry if that was rambly those are just my Thoughts ™

Spamano’s things please 🏃🏻‍♂️ their wedding ? Honeymoon? Ya know
This ask is literally a month and a half old I’m so sorry
Their wedding would 100% be in a church cause they’re both catholic. They’d probably have Eduardo(Port.) or Francis marry them officially cause it would mean more to be married by a close friend/brother!
It would be an intimate wedding, not something huge with all of the nations coming- no! That would be too stressful and too many people. They’re just having close friends and family come, that’s all!!
Their wedding party would go allllllll night long, everyone will be dancing and drinking fine wine in a super classy ballroom place
Their honeymoon would probably be to the Bahamas or to Fiji, both are so beautiful and they’d just get to relax and swim with pretty fish to celebrate getting m a r r i e d !
Ugh they’re just too cute! You can bet that Toni will take so many pictures of everything. They had to get a wedding photographer cause uhhhh otherwise he’d have spent the whole time taking pictures and not being in them
The food would be really good at their wedding btw, just putting that out there

nations who are good cooks
ok, i got a lot of ideas about this one too
romano: starting with the obvious. when he was living in america and working for alfred (seems like the interwar period?) he cooked for him along with being essentially a personal maid. and ofc its only natural that the representative of southern italy would be an amazing cook. in my human aus, i usually have romano either starting a restaurant or working as a chef, and in nation aus, i would imagine food is one of the areas he is never lazy in. if romano was at one point the representative of naples, than pizza would be a specialty of his (and he would have some STRONG feelings on all the different incarnations of pizza in america and arounf the world), along with pasta with seafood in it and dishes with salami. overall romano is def one of the best cooks out of all characters
antonio: ok, basically if spamano had kids their children would be blessed with amazing food no matter which parents cooking. antonio’s favorite part of cooking is watching others enjoy it. he loves having big dinners with his friends, like romano, ned, bel, francis, gilbert, and watching their reactions, seeing just how much they enjoy it. he’s kinda like when ur grandma coaxes u eat more even when ur full. and of course, olive oil is used heavily, perhaps even excessively, in all of his recipes. whenever romano asks him for a recipe for one of his dishes, antonio always refuses to give up the ‘secret ingredient,’ and everytime romano accurately guesses it’s (surprise!) olive oil
francis: i mean, he’s in the gastronomy or gastronomics or whatever they call it club in the hetalia academy episodes. and french cuisine is some of the most famous and delicious in the world. im not talking about the stupid little five-bite-and-ur-done french dishes they have at fancy restaurants, no, when francis cooks, it’s hearty, delicious, and filling. he’s especially skilled at making soups (even arthur cant deny that his french onion soup is absolutely amazing), quiches, and ratatouille, lots of so-called peasant dishes that will leave you full for hours and will make u feel warm and satisfied
sadik: yet another member of the gastronomy club in the hetalia academy episodes, sadik cooks very frequently in his free time (he’s another character who i often make a chef in my human aus). turkish cuisine, much like turkish culture, is influenced by a variety of different sources, like european, middle eastern, and asian, so i imagine that sadik is adept at cooking foods of different cultures around the world, and likes to incorporate flavors he considers ‘exotic’ into his dishes
yao: yao is shown to immediately want to care for people around him who are sick (such as immediately running to care for kiku when he has a cold) and i imagine him cooking for others is a big part of that natural instinct to care for those around him. now, im unfortunately only familiar with westernized chinese cuisine (which i hc that bc of yao’s appreciation of china towns and chinese diaspora around the world he would still enjoy westernized chinese food), so i cant really comment on specific authentic dishes, but think of warm soups and light snacks. those are his specialities.
tolys: i imagine that in soviet times, ivan had tolys doing a million things at once, including being a personal assisstant/secretary, cleaning the house, and cooking. i dont think tolys would love cooking or consider it a hobby, rather something that needs to be done bc people need to eat, but after years of cooking for the other bloc nations, he’s grown pretty good at making a variety of eastern european dishes, like russian pelmeni, polish pierogi, lithuanian beet soup, or ukrainian borscht, whatever ingredients he could get his hands on and whatever he could do to make the other bloc nations feel at home
gilbert: i only include gilbert bc i feel like although he wouldn’t be an amazing cook, he would be adept at throwing together an edible meal from found ingredients and anything he can get his hands on. the mans been a warrior/soldier his whole life, armys are not generally famous for their cuisine, so i bet over the centuries he’s become good at improving meals with found ingredients. he could make a decent meal out of some shit he found in the wilderness. i also bet hes amazing at making one specific dish—not sure what it is yet, still have to pick one — but just one specific food he can make on special occasions and everyone is blown away that ‘wow! gilbert can cook?’
