Happy WBW!
If your world has a main culture or religion, tell me about the people who DON'T believe in the same gods or culture. What groups are the minorities?
Hey friend! Thanks for the ask!
Incoming infodump because I spent sooooo much time on this oh my god.
WIPVII is basically just England in the early 1300s but slightly to the left. I did not want my story to fall into the trap of treating a pseudo-medieval England like a cultural and religious monolith because, of course, it gives the impression that real medieval England was a monolith and feeds into all sorts of bigoted revisionist history so...
I based the main religion heavily off of Catholicism because so many plot points in the story (around modesty, fidelity, marriage, women's roles etc.) rely on a very Christian-like status quo. The main culture is based off of the dominant Anglo-Norman culture in 1300s England. Of course, this makes it only fair that some other religions and cultures that also existed in 1300s England also get a shout out.
Ieuan is Cilfac and Udan, fictional cultures with similarities to Welsh and Jewish culture and religion respectively.
Uthman is multi-generational Cithic (which is the main ethnic group) but his ancestry is Idaluan, a fictional culture inspired by Muslim Al-Andalus (Spain). He still practices the religion of his ancestors too.
Henry has a grandmother from Lyzviria, similar to the Byzantine Empire (mainly Greek at this time). From her he gets his complexion, still pale-skinned because she came from royalty but with golden undertones rather than pink, and hair with dark, loose curls.
Matilda's father is from Para, a fictional city resembling Jerusalem. I never decided which religious group he belongs to but never comes up. Matilda was raised by her Cithic-Andovin mother, aunt, and uncle and practices the dominant religion.
There is also a more minor character (though arguably the most important after the pro- and antagonists themselves as far as plot is concerned) named Tamas of Mairan. Tamas is a seafaring mercenary/pirate who commands a multi-ethnic crew. He himself is from Torsia, which is inspired by Persia during Mongol conquest.
There are also a few other ethnicities that aren't dominant but... our modern lens see them all as white people whereas the distinctions are important to the people in this world.
Some context:
The Andovins are inspired by the Normans. The Pylts are inspired by the Anglo-Saxons (who, in 1333, had mostly integrated with the conquering Norman culture to become the Anglo-Normans, but some remote vestiges likely remained). The Cithic people are like to the Anglo-Normans, mostly common people with Piltish ancestry. The Cithic-Andovins are the upper-class, the rulers of Cithidy who are technically Cithic because they are from Cithidy but have much more in common, including the Andovaic language, with the Andovins than with the Cithics they rule over. There is also an ethnic group called the Diacs who live in northeastern Dian (it is from them the kingdom gets its name); this group is representative of the Celtic Bretons who came with the Normans to England in 1066. And I mentioned the Cilfacs already too.
This makes the two dominants groups the Cithics and the Cithic-Andovins. The Cithics are the majority group and make up the urban class of merchants, craftsmen, and clergy in most regions of Cithidy and Dian. The Cithic-Andovins are the ruling class that conquered Cithidy and Dian. They share a religion with the Cithics but not a language, and there are cultural differences. They are minority but comprise most of the noble families.
The Cilfacs and the Diacs follow a religion based on Celtic Christianity. The Pylts technically share a religion with the Cithics and Andovins, but they have some unique saints and traditions carried over from pagan times (although that was 600 years ago.)
As mentioned Ieuan is both Cilfac and Udan. He had a Cilfac parent, and a parent who was also Cilfac-Udan. In terms of his religious practices, he tries to honour both traditions in his own way.
Alan is Diac.
Wulfrith identifies more as Piltish than he does Cithic. Where he is from they still speak a dialect of the old Piltish tongue rather than the new Cithic one. The difference is like the difference between Old and Middle English (aka. Anglo-Norman). In fact, I cheated and just used Old English words for anything named in the Piltic language. Pilitish itself comes from pyll + cythu, the Old English words for inlet and homeland. Cithic is also derrived from cythu.
Though to be fair, I did that with more than just Old English. Wulfrith is an Anglo-Saxon name. Alan is a Breton one. Tamas is a name contemporary to 1300s Persia, and Uthman an Islamic name used in 1300s Al-Andalus. Ieuan is a Welsh name. Dian and Diac derrive from the Breton word diazac which means land that drains into a river. Cilfac is the Welsh word for creek.
so uh yeah... I hope you enjoyed my info dump!

The Real People of Black Sails!
Here’s a quick(I promise....I promise this is as short as I could make it without leaving out some really choice shit) rundown of all the real historical figures peppered throughout Black Sails! I think I caught them all but if you know of others please mention them and I’ll add them on! Under a readmore because this is....so long y’all.
Pirates & Maroons
Anne Bonny (possibly 1697 – unknown; possibly April 1782) Started life crossdressing at her dad’s behest to avoid his wife(who wasn’t Bonny’s mom), married a guy her dad didn’t like, moved to Nassau. There her husband became a spy for Rogers and Anne was like ‘Not cool bro’. She met Jack, they started fucking, and Anne discovered she was really good at stabbing things. Resumed dressing as a man and started trying to seduce Mary Read who was also dressed as a man. They did indeed fall victim to one of the classic queer blunders. Anyway, Anne’s like ‘it’s not gay I’m a chick!’ And Mary is like ‘really?? Then it’s a little gayer than you realize because I’m a chick too!’ They (probably) start banging. Rackham’s like ‘hang on! I’m the only dick in Anne’s life’ and Mary and Anne are like ‘you sure are’ and Mary shows him her boobs and then they have some sort of complicated and probably not totally consensual threeway. Then they get captured because, Jack is That Guy Who Was Too Drunk To Realize His Ship Was Under Attack and Mary and Anne had to defend the ship against like, a whole other crew. Jack is hung(not a dick joke), but both Anne and Mary plead stays of execution due to pregnancy. Anne disappears but possibly is maybe referred to later. No one knows. Neat!
Edit: According to sources from this post there is a genealogical record that refers to Anne and it records her death as 1782. Very neat!
Israel Hands (c.1701-death unknown) Israel Hands was a real pirate and Blackbeard’s first mate. Not much else is known about where he came from or his life, other than that Blackbeard shot him in the knee at one point while supposedly aiming for another man. ‘Oops my bad this pistol is from like, the 18th century or something.’ While recuperating in Bath he was arrested after Teach’s death but took a pardon in exchange for ratting out the colonial officials who had been bribed by Teach. It’s unknown what happened to him after that although That Book About Pyrites says he died a beggar in London.
Benjamin Hornigold (1680–1719) Horny4gold was one of the most well known and influential pirates of the Golden Age. Most other pirates sailed under him or with him at one point, and he was one of the founders of the Pirate Republic of Nassau. He never attacked british ships during his time as captain so that he could be like ‘but brooooo I was acting in Britain’s Interests!!! Bro!!!!!’ But his co-pirates didn’t like that and eventually voted to replace him with Sam Bellamy. He accepted the king's pardon in 1718 and became a pirate hunter instead. Bummer. He was reportedly killed in a shipwreck.
Okay listen Horingold in any universe is a fucking JOKE I have to share this passage with y’all:
“Hornigold is recorded as having attacked a sloop off the coast of Honduras, but as one of the passengers of the captured vessel recounted, "they did us no further injury than the taking most of our hats from us, having got drunk the night before, as they told us, and toss'd theirs overboard"” WHAT A JOKE.
Dr. Howell - (birth/death unknown) John Howell was a pirate surgeon forced into service by Hornigold sometime in early 1717. He sailed with various pirate crews until October before returning into the service of Governor Rogers.
Ned Low (1690–1724) N’EDWARD. Okay I’m serious again. Born in London, Lowe grew up a thief in a thief family before moving to Boston. His wife died in childbirth in 1719, so he decided ‘fuck it I’ll become a Pirate Captain’ and did just that. He was known for torturing the people on board the ships he captured before murdering them and burning the ship. Interestingly though, Lowe was known to have a huge amount of regret over abandoning his daughter when he turned pirate, and wouldn’t force married men into his service. He also reportedly would allow women to return to port safely. Because of his numerous captures and cruelties, he was one of the most well known pirates in his day. There are differing reports about Low’s death - some say his crew mutinied and marooned him and he was subsequently hung, others say his ship sunk in a storm, and some say he just straight up disappeared. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Jack Rackham - (December 26, 1682 – November 18, 1720) Really a pirate, really named himself after a housecat pattern. (No, okay, he didn’t, it was because of his threads. But wouldn’t the cat thing fit too?) Sailed with Vane, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. Was mostly known for being That Guy Who Was Too Drunk To Realize His Ship Was Under Attack and being Anne and Mary’s captain. He was captured and sentenced to hang after the aforementioned Drunk Blunder in 1720.
Mary/Mark Read - (1685 – 28 April 1721) Much like Anne Bonny, Mary dressed as a boy for much of her youth so a parent could swindle someone out of money. From her teenage years on she continued dressing as a man to find work in the military and as a sailor. She did marry but her husband died young and so she decided to become a pirate. Like ya do. She accepted the king’s pardon in 1718, then mutinied on the privateer she was aboard, once again becoming a pirate. Because pirates are sexy. In 1720 she joined Jack Rackham’s crew and sailed with him and Bonny. Cue the whole ‘Hey you’re hot, also I’m a woman.’ ‘Oh, hey, same hat!’ with Anne. In November of 1720, Rackham’s ship was captured. Mary died of a fever in prison(likely due to her pregnancy) in 1721.
Edward Teach - (c. 1680 – 22 November 1718) He started piracy sailing under Hornigold, and built the fleet alongside him and Stede Bonnet until Hornigold retired. COOL fact about Blackbeard is he was a MASTER showman who liked to light slow burning fuses under his hat to scare his enemies, and he relied more heavily on creating an image his prizes feared than violence. He did a lot of cool shit including ransoming the entire town of Charles Town and annoying the shit out of Woodes Rogers before settling in Bath and later dying of like, a shit ton of wounds while battling Lieutenant Maynard. The battle on Roger’s ship is pretty much what happened minues the keelhauling. Afterwards he was beheaded, his head hung from the bow of Maynard’s ship, and his body was thrown in the bay in Bath, where it’s said his ghost still haunts! Funky!
Charles Vane - (1680 – 29 March 1721) Really a pirate captain! Known for being Not A Nice Dude. Sailed with Henry Jennings, Edward England and Jackie Rackhammie. He led the pirates in resisting Rogers in Nassau, and yeah he really did light a ship on fire and 18th centuryeet it into Rogers’ line in order to escape. There’s a note that he returned to Nassau to get married but I couldn’t find any info on who he married so he’s gay now. That’s a rule I just made up. Anyway so at one point his ship got into a fight with another ship and Vane ordered a retreat and the crew was like ‘this is BOOshit’ and voted him out in favor of Jack Rackham. Ouch. Vane and some of the crew that supported him left aboard the Katherine(I believe) but then they got caught in a storm that said ‘fuck you specifically to Charles Vane,’ and he was marooned on an island. He survived! Just long enough for a British ship to stop at the island for him to attempt to board, get caught, and then hung. Deus ex piratica.
(Honorary mentions)
John Silver + Captain Flint (sort of but I’m not kidding!) Okay so of course there are a bunch of suspected origins of the characters of Captain Flint and Long John Silver, but the one I like the most is of two brothers - one of whom had a peg leg! - who captured an enormous Spanish treasure and buried it near Ocracoke island. Their names were John and Owen Lloyd. (And yes, John was the one-legged brother.) In 1750 a Spanish treasure fleet named the Flotas de Indias attempted to sail from Havana to Spain in late August, and three ships were wrecked during a hurricane. By a stroke of luck, the Lloyd brothers had been blown to the same inlet as the wrecked ships Guadalupe and Soledad , and managed to convince the Captain to hire them to transport the treasure to Norfolk.
But of course because they thought the Spanish SUCKED they said ‘psyche’ and just fucked off with it while the Captain was fighting Bureaucratic red tape in North Carolina. Iconique. Owen Lloyd reportedly buried the treasure on Norman Island and the pair became folk heroes in the area, particularly in St. Kitts. (P.s., the Stevenson family ran a sugar production business on St. Kitts, and R.L. Stevenson’s great grandfather worked there as early as 1773 - just 25 years after the epic heist. COOL STORY BRO.)
Captain Throckmorton (Okay not really but I just love this guy’s name) Okay so this guy wasn’t really a pirate captain but he was a Steamboat captain in the 1830s and his name is just too ridiculous for someone to make up. Toot toot, motherfucker.
---------
Queen Nanny(Maroon Queen/Madi) (c. 1686 – c. 1755) The spiritual, cultural, and military leader of the Windward Maroons (who the Black Sails Maroons are based on.) She led them alongside her ‘brother’ Quao although the relationship between them isn’t known. Exact information about her origins are not known but best guess is that she was of royal lineage from present-day Ghana, born sometime in the 1680’s. She did have a husband named Adou(who may have been the same person as Quao? I’ve read conflicting stuff), but they had no children. Many of the guerilla warfare tactics we now think of as common practice were developed by Queen Nanny and the other Maroons in their fight against British incursions. (The trap that Flint lays, covering themselves with paint and leaves, and the pits the Maroons lay in the forest are tactics known to have been used by the Windward Maroons.)
Nanny was a fucking legend okay a LEGENDS ONLY legend. She was one of the most instrumental people in preserving African culture among freed slaves and Maroons, and in encouraging the resistance to slavery in the Bahamas and surrounding areas. She was one of three leaders of the First Maroon War (which the war in Black Sails is based on). She initially refused to sign the treaty offered to Cudjoe because she knew the British were losing and was like ‘Why????? Would I surrender???? In a war??? I’m winning?????’
Anyway Queen Nanny was a fucking badass please read every piece of literature you can find on her. (You should absolutely read her full bio because she was fucking badass.)
Cudjoe (not exactly, but Julius is very close) (c. 1690s – 1764) Likely a freeborn son of one of the original escaped slaves turned Maroons, Cudjoe is hailed as one of the greatest Maroon leaders(after Queen Nanny). Much like in Black Sails, these original Maroons were slaves who escaped or overran their masters, forming free communities in the Mountains of Jamaica. The treaty in Black Sails is based on the one Cudjoe negotiated with the British, wanting an ‘honorable peace’ with the enemy, rather than the continued war and better terms that Queen Nanny and Quao wanted. (sound familiarrrrrr?) I do want to note that by the end of his life he became completely disillusioned with the idea that the British should be reasoned with and basically started fights with every British superior he could.
The English, Spanish, and Scottish!
The Guthries So while there wasn’t ever a female head of the Guthrie clan in Nassau, the Guthries were a Scottish merchant clan who emigrated to Boston around 1652 due to religious and racial persecution. While most of the family stayed around Pennsylvania and Massachusetts, John Guthrie moved to Virginia and his brother James Guthrie moved to Bermuda sometime after 1683.
(James Guthrie of Suffolk County, Massachusetts was listed in the will of John Richardson, dated 7 May 1683, in which Richardson says, “I give and bequeath unto James Guthrie all I have in the world except twenty shillings to buy John Harris a ring and ten shillings to buy John Kyte a ring.” This was witnessed by John Raynsford and John Ramsey.) Fellas is it gay.
Anyway, between Virginia and Boston and James’ ties in the Bermuda islands, the family made a shit ton fencing pirated goods during the Golden Age of Piracy, particularly from the Pirate Republic of Nassau.
A John Guthrie(likely a son of James’) was also a Colonel who was part of the peace talks with Cudjoe and the Maroons. Neat!
James Oglethorpe (22 December 1696 – 30 June 1785) Okay listen Oglethorpe was COOL AS FUCK. He is the founder of the colony of Georgia and is imo who Thomas Hamilton is probably based on. Oglethorpe was a HUGE humanitarian and even before he decided to form an entire colony around people not owning slaves. He advocated for better conditions for sailors, and prison reform. In 1732 he read a letter by a slave in Maryland named Ayuba Suleiman Diallo and on the spot decided slavery was terrible, divested himself of his stock in the African Trading Company, and resolved to include a law banning slavery in Georgia to the colony’s charter. Radical, man.
Speaking of Georgia, and specifically his plantation near Savannah, Oglethorpe actively spoke with the native Yamacraw who populated the land to ask permission and trade for the land he sought to build Georgia on. His plantation was meant to help debtors in London, released without any support, from falling back into debt and offering them a way forward to landownership through indentured servitude. I highly recommend anyone interested in early attempts at an equality based colonial system read up on the original charter of Georgia. (Of course there were still problems, but Oglethorpe was one of the most prominent proponents of a non hierarchical society - including limits to the acreage any person could own based on how helpful that land was to the people who worked it, and communal resources.) Oglethorpe was also a lifelong friend with Tomochichi, the chief of the Yamacraw, and worked very closely with him on colonial-indigenous relations.
Vincente de Raja (birth/death unknown) He was the real Governor and military Captain of Cuba from 1716-1717. He was a devoted pirate hunter and encouraged Spanish privateering against the pirates. Due to an attempt by Spain to increase tobacco profits at the expense of the farmers, there was a large revolt which resulted in many of the Cuban officials, including Raja, being replaced.
William Rhett (4 September 1666 – 12 January 1723) He was a merchant captain and plantation owner in Carolina who served in the colonial militia and hunted pirates. He captured Stede Bonnet and was probably just as much of an asshole as he is in the show.
Woodes Rogers - (c. 1679 – 15 July 1732) The Governor of Nassau who was largely responsible for ending piracy in the Bahamas. He really did offer a universal pardon, which a large number of the pirates took. Fun fact: before he was Governor, he rescued Alexander Selkirk, who is believed to be the guy Robinson Crusoe is based off of! Neat! He really did have a brother who really did die during his privateering exploits which also really did leave him ‘disfigured’. He got sued by his crew, went bankrupt, wrote a book, got famous for writing the book, and he really did have a wife named Sarah whom he divorced shortly after all this happened. He then became Governor of Nassau for the first time. This first term did end in him being imprisoned for debts incurred defending the island from Vane and Teach and the Spanish, but he was released, helped write that most famous A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates, and became governor again in 1728. He died in 1732 of just plain exhaustion from dealing with the bureaucracy. Alexa play tiny violin.

Excerpt for QuiObi AU Week: Pirates
@quiobiauweek
because I cannot control myself and everything becomes longfic 😔
jail, jail for one thousand years for saner!
“Did I hear correctly? You’re not going to sail to Providence Island to help your fellow pirates take back their haven?”
The pirate before him didn’t so much as raise an eyebrow. “I find myself sorely lacking inclination,” said Jinn. “And it’s rather bold of you to assume that all of us pirates are somehow brothers in arms.”
“No. Still, I might at least assume you would be united by a common goal,” Obi-Wan mused. “Refusing assistance to Bane and the other pirates of Providence would run counter to your interests, in the long term.”
“That so?” Jinn stared at him, eyes bright with mirth. “And what are my interests?”
“You wanted Providence to become an independent republic,” Obi-Wan hazarded. It was a guess, but it gave Jinn pause, so Obi-Wan suspected it was somewhat correct. “You need havens in these waters, pirate-friendly places. If nothing else, you might be able to hold a tentative union among the various pirate crews long enough to ensure it.
Jinn smiled outright now, leaning back against the heavy oak desk behind him. “What are you, lad? A diplomat’s son? With a silver tongue like that, it’s a wonder you’ve been exiled here, to the far side of the world.”
Obi-Wan, against his better judgement, nearly bristled at the words.
“Oh, you don’t have to tell me anything,” Qui-Gon soothed. “I imagine it’s just as likely that silver tongue scared somebody shitless, and they had you removed before you could do more damage to their reputation.”
Obi-Wan tried to keep his face blank, his posture relaxed. He did not want to give anything away, but Jinn’s guess was preternaturally accurate. Aside from the bit about being a diplomat’s son, anyway.
“As for becoming a pirate republic—I don’t have much interest in it. It’ll all come down like a house of cards in the end. You think these cutthroats will agree to working together for any longer than a month?”
“They might,” Obi-Wan hazarded. “Providence Island has some of the finest living conditions as a vital point of trade. Fresh meat, fresh goods. An emancipated people. England has its eye on you now, though. It won’t last.”
“Listen,” Jinn snapped, annoyed, “while England was at war with Spain, we weren’t a problem. So long as pirates were out here harrying Spanish ships, nobody gave a damn.”
“Well,” Obi-Wan pointed out, “we are no longer at war.” He carefully did not mention they were perhaps poised at the brink of another.
“Yes, I’ve noticed. Would you care to guess how many of my boys are formerly of the Royal Navy? Or how many were on merchant crews? Do you think they joined up with pirates to escape a good life and good wages?” Jinn asked acidly. “Dangerous as this life is, piracy certainly pays better.”
“When the hunting is good.” Obi-Wan couldn’t help needling the man.
But to his surprise, his little taunt had quite the opposite effect: Jinn leaned toward him, grinning, resembling nothing so much as a triumphant predator. “Oh,” the pirate said, voice so low it shot right through Obi-Wan’s spine, “I’m very good.”

Headcanon for Piri and Iggy
Now this is my first time to ever make a headcanon for a series I love, so please take it easy on me!
For those interested, please read on :D
Human Name: Mariano Lorenzo Villalobos Balagtas Nickname: Enzo Name Meanings:
Mariano - male equivalent to Maria; 'bitter'; name also means 'Star of the Sea'; named after Mariano Gomez, one of the three priests executed for mutiny (GOMBURZA)
Lorenzo - means laurel in Italian; a symbol of victory, fame, honour or accomplishment; named after Saint Lorenzo Ruiz, the first Filipino saint and martyr
Villalobos - means 'town of wolves' in Spanish; named after Ruy Lopez de Villalobos, the Spanish explorer who gave Enzo his first name Las Islas Filipinas
Balagtas - means 'to trail blaze' in Tagalog- named after Francisco Balagtas, a prominent Filipino poet during the Spanish occupation; author of Florante at Laura
Personality:
Pre-Colonial - independent, organized, skilled fighter, resourceful, creative, family-oriented, hardworking, hospitable, proud of his heritage, a born leader, a great singer and a believer in the supernatural
Spanish Colonial - he still maintains the same personality as he did in the pre-colonial period, with developing traits of stubbornness, slight laziness (Filipino time), and religiousness. After being kidnapped by Britain for two years (who was a pirate at that time), he became knowledgeable in English. He develops a love-hate relationship with Spain.
American Colonial - bringing all his traits from his pre-colonial and Spanish colonial times, now with a more carefree air. Thanks to Britain years prior, Piri was fluent in English, surprising America. Piri becomes more fluent in the language to the point he made his own English language known as Philippine English -- a combination of both British and American English with a Filipino twist and -- since he was a former colony of Spain -- some Spanish terms.
Japanese Colonial - all above traits, but he became more solemn, more irritable and more stubborn after being told off by Japan right when Piri was about to graduate/gain independence.
Modern Day - he still maintains all his above traits but masked behind a more carefree, sociable, teasing, trendsetting, cheerful personality that everyone has known him for.
Headcanon for Enzo towards Arthur
At first, Enzo found Arthur weird when he spotted the latter sketching among the trees nearby. To Enzo, it's rare to find a blonde person in his home country.
But the more Arthur visited the area, the more fonder and more curious Enzo became towards him.
It was through Arthur that Enzo got a chance to see what magic is like, and is always enamored by it since then.
Whenever Arthur visits, Enzo always readies food and drinks for them. But whenever he doesn't show up and Antonio is around, Enzo would give them to his foster brother. Though he loved Antonio, the boy was still sad that his newfound friend didn't come to visit.
Enzo loved watching magic either for Arthur to him stories, or to be lulled to sleep.
Enzo felt betrayed when he found out that Arthur was a pirate. But after being assured that he was anything but in danger, Enzo relaxed, and even decided to stay with him for two years.
Enzo had a hard time speaking in a British accent; but apparently got to speak the language and learned it quickly. Of all the times he spent with Arthur, Enzo loved it when the Brit would test his vocabulary and then treat him to something sweet.
During his time with Arthur, Enzo gets to express himself more about his feelings and thoughts towards Antonio -- both good and bad.
Because of the admiration he had towards the Brit, Enzo was saddened when Arthur returned the boy to the archipelago.
When he was placed under Alfred's care, Enzo would write letters to Arthur on how he gets annoyed with the American, and openly complains about him.
To Enzo, he feared that by learning the American English, it would replace what he learned so far from Arthur. To prevent that from happening, he decided to make his own English form known as the Philippine English -- a mix of American and British English with Spanish terms. It was heavily influenced by American English, but some British terms and grammar were retained in it.
Of all the Allies, Enzo is very close towards Alfred and Arthur -- with Alfred who had watched over him until the night of independence; and with Arthur, who he had a history that dated back to when Enzo was a boy.
Headcanon for Arthur Kirkland towards Enzo
He is very much like how he was portrayed in the series, but has a soft spot for children and cute creatures.
To Arthur, Enzo was a boy whose future was taken away by Antonio. And believes that, even though Antonio meant well to keep the boy safe, Enzo would have to leave his foster brother and live on his own.
Even though he had the means to take him in, Arthur decided to not do so. But it didn't change the fact that he genuinely cared for the boy. He would watch over the boy, even if it means from afar.
Since he and Antonio are rivals, Arthur was the one who encouraged Enzo to rebel against the Spaniard. This was done not only because of the rivalry, but because he truly believed that Enzo is more than capable to fend for himself.
Though implied, even Arthur was saddened that he had to return Enzo after being called back to England.
When he found that Antonio was going to let Enzo go, Arthur immediately pushed Alfred to take care of him.
Arthur disproves of the skit plan, after finding that out from Alfred in one of the latter's visits to England.
Even after Antonio left the teen, Arthur made absolutely sure that Enzo is protected at all costs, even if it meant having Alfred taking care of him.
Whenever Alfred had problems in taking care of Enzo, Arthur would advise him on how he could take care of the teen. Having known the boy for a long time, Arthur knew how the boy acted, felt and thought. He was genuinely dismayed when Alfred decided to do things his way, and wasn't surprised when things went from bad to worse for the American; but he warned Alfred that the American doesn't do anything funny towards Enzo OR ELSE.
When the teen was finally able to live on his own, Arthur treated Enzo out to dinner celebrating his first night of independence. On that same night, Arthur says, "Let's make it official," letting out a hand for Enzo to take. They shook hands as a sign that Arthur now sees Enzo as an equal, and no longer someone else's foster child or ward; but as a person of his own.
== My Headcanon between Modern Day Enzo and Arthur ==
Since Enzo is old enough to drink, he gets to go to drinking parties with Arthur. And if there are any karaoke machines in the venue, the two would either sing together or have a singing showdown, hoarding the microphones until either both of them passed out, or sing until closing time.
Whenever Arthur gets tired to sing, Enzo continues to sing songs until he plops onto his seat.
When both are drunk, it was Alfred who drags them both to a friend's residence depending on the country they're in. If it's in Enzo's home country or region, Indo would be the one to carry them both home.
During Halloween, it became routine for Enzo to help Arthur come up with ideas in the scaring contest with Alfred.
Whenever he's bored, or when they were not occupied, Enzo would call up Arthur and invite him to a ghost hunt or a paranormal investigation.
Once they went to every haunted place in both countries, they would save up money for travel to other haunted places in the world.
Whenever they have a sleepover in England, Enzo was saddened that his Diwata couldn't come along since England was far away -- with hopes that he could introduce his fairy to Arthur's. To make him feel better, Arthur would invite Ms. Fairy, Unicorn, Brownie, Flying Mint Bunny and Captain Hook. Seeing Enzo interact with his companions was heartwarming for Arthur.
When Arthur became terribly ill to the point of being hospitalised, Enzo would always be by his side. A trained nurse himself, Enzo saw through Arthur's stay until the Brit's full recovery.
When Enzo falls ill, he would usually not tell Arthur so as not to trouble him. But was surprised to learn that Arthur found out about his sickness anyway, and cared for him until he got better.
Arthur and Enzo would cook together whenever they hang out in either residence.
Enzo would usually ask Arthur to take a selfie with him, the latter not minding at all. And whenever Alfred photobombs the selfie, Arthur would chase after him, while Enzo keeps snapping photos of himself with the two running in the background.
Enzo was the fourth person to follow Arthur in Twitter (Alfred, Francis and Matthew being the first, second and third respectively) and third to follow the Brit in Instagram; whereas Arthur was the seventh to follow Enzo in Twitter (the first six being the SEA family) and in Instagram.
Arthur is well-aware that Enzo's family was protective of the latter, and keeps a safe distance.
Ever since Arthur ran away from his group in Europe, he decided to stay with the SEA family. Enzo was more than delighted to volunteer to let Arthur stay in his house.
In contrast to Alfred, Pien grew friendly towards Arthur because of how delicately the Brit treats him. As a response, Pien would climb either on top of Arthur's head or rest on the shoulder, much to Enzo's delight.
Horror and fantasy are must-watch movie themes for Arthur and Piri during movie nights.
Whenever he finds the time, Arthur would help Enzo recap some British terms. BUT without telling Alfred unless the American asked for it.
Arthur still sketches birds from time to time, and would sometimes sketch Enzo with birds on his arms, shoulders and on top of his head, much to Arthur's amusement.

Spamano multi-chapter fanfiction recommendation masterlist!
For all you home-quarantined people that have nothing to do and also because I’ve been meaning on making one of these since 2015 (took a global pandemic to get me started lol)
These fanfics are all with multiple chapters and listed in no particular order. Of course some are better than others, but every single one has its charms! I added only a few with 3 or 4 chapters because i liked them too much not to whereas the rest of the fanfics have at least 5+ chapters. So without further ado, here they are:
Una Notte A Napoli “One night in Naples, by the moon and sea, my heart was stolen by an angel who had forgotten how to fly.” (completed)
Per Sempre Tuo “Lovino Vargas, better known as Romano, is a famous TV actor. He has everything anyone could ever want. The only problem is that the thing he wants, over-night singing sensation Antonio Fernandez, is married.” (completed)
HOVA “The Nova Sagittarius was a ship that would take myself and countless other passengers on a one month trip around our solar system. But things went wrong; the ship changed and just like that, we were stranded. We got to know each other but more than that, we got to know ourselves.” (completed)
What We’d Do Without Gravity “While lost in a hospital Antonio comes across young terminally ill patient, Lovino Vargas. With Lovino left only six months to live it’s an awful time a romance to blossom between the ill fated pair, but with a bucket list to race through as the clock ticks down, the two find that love is very hard to avoid.” (completed)
Numbered Lithograph “When Lovino starts attending art school with his brother he finds his most important lesson doesn’t come from his professors, but from a culinary student at a sister school: sometimes the flaws hold the beauty.” (completed)
Tienimi Streto “Lovino Vargas is a detective with a poor attitude and a dark past, driven to the side of law by pain and revenge. After his partner quits, he is paired with specially recruited Antonio Carriedo, who becomes something more than just a co-worker. When deaths linked to the Italian start popping up over the city, Lovino begins to question everything he thought he knew.” (on-going)
More than attraction “Antonio says he met his love’s eyes over the bin of tomatoes. Lovino says he was stalked relentlessly until he was forced to give in.” (completed)
Credo “AU, 1502. Fueled by revenge, Lovino Vargas hasn’t failed an assassination job yet - but when a new Spanish captain comes to Rome, killing the unorthodox Antonio Carriedo might just be the death of him.” (completed)
Secret Tunnels from Madrid to Sicily “When Antonio Fernández Carriedo begins work as a professor at a prestigious university in Britain, one of his students, a Sicilian boy who goes by the name Romano, immediately catches his eye. He is a clearly gifted writer, who closes himself off in the wake of a dark and painful history. Even wrapped in his darkness, pushing everyone away, Toni finds himself determined to bring out the potential within Romano…They drag each other into a passionate, inevitable affair–doomed, they know, to end in flames.” (completed)
Why Did it Have to be You? “Lovino’s parents are tired of his horrible behavior, and hire Antonio to babysit him. But time is a cruel mistress, and in absence the heart grows fonder. These are just some of the things Antonio and Lovino will learn.” (completed)
And the Birds Sing No More “Don’t ever leave me.” Lovino said nothing. He allowed the tense heaviness to settle among his shoulders, tighten his lungs, and spread between the space from where he stood to where Antonio was seated lethargically. Antonio’s gaze sharpened. Lovino, inclining his head slightly, whispered, “I won’t.” (completed)
A Dancing Star “Antonio is the easy-going, life-loving art professor and Lovino is the Italian exchange student who walks into his art studio. When Antonio falls in love he thought he only had his job to worry about, but maybe it’s Lovino’s dark secret that’ll push him away. Trigger warning for self-harm and dark themes.” (completed)
Kismet “Lovino learns the hard way that things change and that they can change quickly. The necklace fell and now he’s in a strange land far from home. Will he ever see his brother again? Will he find his way home? Or will he discover home is where the heart is? Fate is a strange woman and can work in mysterious ways.” (completed)
Let that be enough “Lovino had given up hoping for someone who’d care about him. Antonio never expected to fall for the most tormented guy in town. But dark secrets and hidden dangers threatens their blooming relationship. Is it over before it even begun..?” (completed)
Child services “Romano and Feliciano Vargas have just lost their parents. Romano, who is 22, must care for his 6 year old little brother. Enter Antonio Carreido, the agent from Child Services who must record his progress, however, it’s hard for the cheerful Spaniard to keep from falling in love with this little broken down family and with Romano.” (on-going)
Loving a Stranger “You don’t remember, but I know you. We were- I don’t even know how to describe our relationship. That sounds bad, I know. I think you might have been in love with me, although I cannot see why. That’s just what I’ve been told. I acted as though I hated you, but I never did. I was afraid, because you were kind to me. I didn’t know I loved you until you forgot me…“ (completed)
The Many Personalities of Spain “England casts a spell to rid himself of Spain. As expected it goes wrong; leaving Romano to deal with the many personalities of Spain. That sounds like a normal day for Romano, right? It would be if the personalities not had their own personifications.” (on-going)
Daisy Genocide “My name is Lovino Vargas but that’s not who I actually am. I’m my brother. They put his DNA into a little ball of jello and grew me like a house plant. To say it blatantly, I’m a clone and I’m in a disturbing amount of trouble. I’m about to tell the story of my fight to preserve my humanity followed by a vicious history of crime but it’s a secret. Nobody has to know.” (completed)
More Than Meets The Eye “Striving to find approval and meaning, Antonio throws himself into the world of art determined to come out on top. Yet, in all of his searching, burning, and pain, he never thought that a single culinary student could ever manage to tear down his walls and make him face his biggest fear; himself.” (on-going)
Cryonic “After suffering a fatal attack from an unknown illness, Lovino Vargas underwent cryopreservation, leaving behind his only family, his boyfriend, and a blooming company. Years later the effects are only just coming into play causing more problems than his preservation was supposed to solve. Human AU; T for language; pre-established Spamano.” (on-going)
All of Our Flaws “Antonio is a man whose world revolves around anyone but himself. Lovino is a man with dreams bigger than a job behind a drugstore counter. Antonio is broken; Lovino is incomplete. Will a chance meeting lead them to mending their cracks and finding their missing pieces? Human AU, trigger warning for self-harm.” (on-going)
Truly an artist “Having already completed college, Lovino Vargas lives in Madrid as an artist suffering from severe artist’s block. In one of his visits to his old school he runs into a new teacher, Antonio Fernández Carriedo, who decides he’ll be the one to help Lovino in his endeavor to find himself. However cheerful and optimistic, Lovino still feels there’s more to Antonio than he’s letting on.” (completed)
The Heartbreaker “Sometimes the best things happen unexpectedly. Certainly this is Antonio’s opinion at the moment. The handsome stranger he met upon moving to a new town in Italy seems to be able to do almost no wrong. Until he digs a little deeper below the surface and begins to discover an unsettling reputation. And if the rumours are true, is it wise to trust a man known as ‘The Heartbreaker?” (completed)
We sing, We dance, We eat tomatoes “When Lovino Vargas takes in a starving guitar player called the Curbside Prophet from the streets of Philadelphia, he isn’t expecting the man to tolerate him for more than a couple weeks, much less fall in love with him. Counting Stars “Antonio, failed writer and journalist, thinks things are finally going his way when he lands an interview with actor Lovino Vargas. But it’s only the start of a long line of problems… the biggest of which may be Vargas himself.” (on-going)
Cosa Nostra “Based on the historical background of the Sicilian Mafia during the First Mafia War starring Mafia!Romano.” (completed)

However, Fate seems to have different plans for them, and twists their lives in unexpected ways.” (on-going)
When You Recover “Nurse Lovino Vargas has to take care of brain damaged patient Antonio Carriedo, who seems to have a strange affection towards him. N-not that Lovino likes it! The Italian is determined to make the man recover, no matter what it takes. What will little Lovino get himself into with this patient?” (on-going)

So, Romano decided to pretend to be gay, with the help of Antonio, in hopes of getting Emma to fall in love with him. Perfect plan, right?” (completed)

Fireflies “Lovino was abandoned in Italy with his grandfather at age seven because his parents liked his little brother better than they liked him. And with a field trip to Venice on the way, what antics will they get up to?” (on-going)

Nothing screamed desperate like raiding the aisles of a fucking Walmart for food while a hoard of the undead snarled at him from outside, but that didn’t seem to matter to the armed trio he stumbled into, or more specifically, the odd Spaniard munching on Skittles. His ideas were getting to be pretty lackluster these days.” (ongoing)
Hymn to the Sea “Please, call me Antonio,” he says. “Oh, and Lovino?” “What?” Lovino snaps, a little sharper than he wants when his brain has finally caught up to his embarrassment and he realizes he’s acting like a love-sick child. He finds he still can’t keep up when Antonio’s smile changes into something different: not the friendliness it was earlier nor the comforting warmth it was moments ago. The face was young but the gestures old; Toni began a romance untold. He felt an issue new to most… if only he could touch Lovino the ghost.” (completed)
Blessed WIth A Curse “Monsters are real… and they didn’t just hide in your closet or under your bed. Too bad they came in the form of Antonio Fernandez Carriedo- a Spaniard too sexy for his own good. / AU Vampire!AntonioxLovino” (on-going)

The Witch of Sicily “There were still whispers, rumors that the witch of Sicily remained in that forest, cursing all who would come near. It was a place many feared to tread, treated almost as sacred ground. Only fools would dare incite the wrath of the witch by entering that place. Only fools…and pirates.” (on-going)
We the Dreamers “New York City, 1940: Antonio is a recently arrived refugee from Spain, a scarred soldier with firm political convictions. For Lovino, everything is pointless and nothing ever lasts. The two of them live, love and dream desperately, as World War Two threatens to take it all away.” (completed)
Guide Me “After witnessing a startling event, Lovino Vargas finds himself stricken with blindness from a psychological misfortune called ‘conversion disorder’. Without anyone to guide him, he is placed with Antonio Fernandez Carriedo, a novice seeing-eye counselor, who will try to help him regain his sight and if not, teach him how to live in the new dark, lonely world ahead of him.” (completed)
Pirate’s Lullaby “It was the last thing in the world that Lovino Vargas wanted. To fall in love with Antonio Fernandez Carriedo. But when the pirate takes him aboard his ship, Lovino learns that maybe it’s not so bad to be a pirate.” (on-going)
Infamous “Lovino was a childhood actor, but once the show he was a part of got canceled he thought he was free and could leave all the acting and fame up to his brother Feliciano. However, when a 'follow up’ episode is decided upon ten years later, he ends up going back. There he sees a familiar, face; Antonio Carriedo, a singer with his eye on Lovi making normal impossible” (completed)
Guilty Bliss “Lovino has had a drug problem for years that he’s never been able to stop. With his debts getting out of hand, Lovino finds himself in situations that made him wish he had quit.” (completed)
Bottoms Up! “Follow Lovino on his weird and, well, at least quite interesting trip around Europe in order to find out some of the greatest secrets ever about himself, Europe, tomato-shaped alarm clocks and the past of his lovely, but complicated Spanish partner.” (completed)
A Trip To Spain Could Only End In “Lovino is a foreign exchange student in Spain. Things were going just brilliantly before he happened upon a Spanish restaurant in the heart of Madrid where he laid eyes on a certain Spanish Sex God…” (completed)
The Pirates Treasure “Pirate Captain Antonio wants one thing, and one thing only; a mermaid. Boy or girl doesn’t matter, as long as they are royalty and can make him jewels.He’s got his wish, but dealing with this prince is going to be much harder than he thought.” (completed)
Strike a Pose, Fake a Smile “Antonio loves the stage; Romano hates it. So when he’s “convinced” into coming to drama club, he’s not gonna like it. In fact, he’s going to say things that he’ll regret. And because he’s such a good actor, this time Antonio believes him. Uh-oh.” (completed)
A Helping Hand “Antonio owns a cafe low on business. One day a strange boy comes in, running from a group of men and covered in wounds. Antonio offers for him to stay and repay him with work. As payment, the boy Lovino begins to make new dishes to bring more people into the cafe. Who is this boy and why won’t he tell Antonio anything but his name and age?” (completed)
A Beautiful Story “Lovino Romano Vargas is a suicidal designer who is unhappy with his fate. One day, he chances to meet Antonio Fernandez Carriedo, who turns his life upside down.” (completed)
Careless “This year, Antonio had priorities: grades, girlfriend and the Football competition, securing college with his two best friends! But that was before the Vargas moved in with all their drama including kidnapping, threats, and football talents. If anyone asks Lovino, not getting killed would be a clear ecstatic success. He is just what Antonio needed, or not.” (on-going)

Oh wow, you two have been friends for a long time then! I know what's that like, I've known my best friend who lives in Spain since we were 8! Definitely awesome to have someone like that in your life. Are you still going to be roommates when the baby comes? And that was really thoughtful of your ex making sure you didn't travel alone.
Canada is really cold tho, so if you're okay with that you should def move there! Ah well, I'm doing better now so that's what matters, all the horrible worries I had when I lived back home are gone atm.
Yeah, that's the spirit! you can do all US states even if it takes you 43 years, that's plenty of time! hahaha And your welcome, it's one of my favourite fics.
Your mind is great, don't worry. At least something good came out of it haha.
Oh so people make her a pisces then, I see. I've met a pisces who was kinda like Dani once so that's why I said she has that kind of energy, but she def has fire on her chart too. And yeah I can see some virgo traits in her, but she's very sensitive and a bit naive so I guess pisces makes more sense.
I had to look up what a badger was hahaha never heard of them before.
I'm sorry you had to go through that. Sounds scary. And you still have to take medication bc of it. The threat of catching covid must've made that 10x worse too. And I can only hope to learn from my mistakes at the very least.
People who made thobm are fucking savages tbh hahaha. 😂 Kinda wish they had cast Oliver as Jamie like they originally intended but then we wouldn't have our damie... don't know what's worse honestly.
Oh Yorkshire accent is pretty cool too, isn't the lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys from Yorkshire? Honestly think all the language variations and different accents that come with each region are really fascinating. And that happens with all languages, not just English. Wish I could speak all languages in the world, that would be a cool superpower! I guess it makes sense you like American accents more bc it's so different from yours. I've become desensitized to North American accents just bc I hear them all the time, but I see how it would be more appealing to you.
Oooh I love that possibility of it becoming a real fic soon hahaha. Worst part of letting it cook is that I already have the finished illustration in my head but the transferring to reality part is not working rn. Wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy tbh.
You def had a busy weekend and start of the week! I have a virgo in my life rn too I know the struggle. Her birthday is this weekend in fact. I had an okay weekend thank you! Managed to catch up with that pirate AU you recommended and I'm already planning fanart for it that will probably never see the light of day haha! Are we going to have more smut this next MoU update? (need to know for scientific purposes 🔬)
Yeah we've been friends for years we met when we were 14 and are still friends now at 27 so it's been one of my longest friendships I have a friend that I met at 4 but we're not as close as we once were still really good friends but not best friends haha!! aww that's so cool that you guys have been friends for that long!! Yeah we're still gonna live together when the baby comes- we're looking for a bigger place right now to make room for the baby and her boyfriend (he still doesn't live with us yet but will soon.... *insert gif of Monica Gellar one friends saying "And now I have to live with a boy" while crying* Yeah my ex is a super thoughtful person and she just didn't want me travelling so far alone when I had never flown before because when I went to Paris with my college we drove there and went on the Eurostar and it took us 13 hours to get there but I had never flown before going to LA and I picked an 11 hour flight for my first one so she wanted someone to fly with me she's a very thoughtful person I LOVE the cold weather I am so sad right now because it's bene quite warm in the north of England I can't wait until it's like -3 degrees Celsius during the winter nights again so I am sure I would love Canada I am fine with it taking me 43 years if that's what it takes haha I just wanna hit all 50 states I think it would be so fun to do it and to be able to say I'd done it. Haha thank you!! As long as something good comes out of it that's all I can hope for but there are times I've done things and people are like "And you're allowed to teach kids?" Like I can be really dumb sometimes haha. Yeah I've seen a couple of fics where she has been a pisces I think with it never being said and with VP never saying what she thinks she is people have looked at her personality and matched it up to zodiac signs- a lot of the pisces I've met haven't been like Dani like I said but I do trust what people who know more about zodiac signs say because I know nothing and I just pick a random date each time so CBML she's a Leo and MoU she's a virgo and in SLS she's gonna be a Scorpio because that's just how I've done it haha but I really know nothing about zodiac signs other than what you have told me!! There different types of badgers there are honey badgers and they're more in America here we have a different type of badger and they look so cute but they are really vicious if they feel attacked or scared so try snd avoid badgers... more than that though we just have cows, geese, ducks, swans... lots of foxes but noting dangerous like bears or anything its a very boring place to live!! Yeah it is pretty scary but I just take everything one day at a time- I actually caught Covid last year because of how much time I was in the hospital having treatments for my condition I caught Covid and ended up in the hospital for a week while they had to give me loads of medication and blood transfusions and had to put me on a fluid drip because I was really dehydrated and that was really scary but luckily I was okay and now I am fully vaccinated so hopefully I won't catch it again. I think you will definitely learn from your mistakes I feel like some mistakes have to be made in life so you can grow from them Oh they were definitely savage but I love Bly Manor so much and I will watch it so many more times I can't wait for it to come out on DVD!! Like it was heart breaking but so beautiful and we got such an incredible wlw relationship from it and some great representation and I love that!! Would be interesting to see how it would've affected people had Oliver played Jamie though Yeah Alex Turner is from Sheffield which is South Yorkshire so again we have a similar accent but it's different because I am from further North but there are things that we say in a similar way because we’re from Yorkshire just different parts of Yorkshire... there are four Yorkshires: North, East, West, and South haha and all are in the north of England Yeah I think that’s the case every where I think accents and languages are so interesting and I would love to be able to speak any other language but I only speak English in my school it wasn’t seen as being overly important to learn a language and I have tried learning them since leaving school but I struggle now There are some American accents I love (Southern and Midwestern) so when I heard Dani speak I was like 😍🥵🥰 because I love that type of accent I have become desensitised to some American accents that are just standard ones from watching so many movies and TV shows but there are some accents that just make me do heart eyes haha I am hoping it can become a real fic soon but I am struggling with some stuff but keeping hopeful with it!! Awwh no I’m sorry it’s so hard for you I hope it gets better soon that you’re able to get it onto a page!! I have had such a busy weekend and part of the week had a bit of a busy day today too and looking after my niece again tomorrow not rest for me it would seem but it’s fine I don’t mind keeping busy!! Well happy birthday to her I hope she has a great day!! Oh yay I’m glad had an okay weekend and that you were able to catch up on the pirate AU and that you already have fan art planned for it- even if no one ever sees that fanart!! No there is no smut in this chapter of MoU some implied smut but no actual smut- there will probably be smut in chapter 9 though because y’know... it’s me haha 😂

My semi-historical Head-cannons for Portugal (Hetalia)
His birth name was actually Portus Cale (Roman-Celtic origin), which eventually evolved to Portugal.
Portugal and Spain are brothers, children of Iberia, a badass lady who fought the Roman Empire, and Al-Andaluz, among other invaders.
It's not known exactly which one is the oldest, Portugal existed as a country first, but Spain already existed as the Asturias, Léon, and Castille, but was named much later.
Portugal has very few memories of his mother, except for living with her for a few years near the beach and walking along with the coastline fishing and picking up sea-shells. One day, he woke up in their little shack and she wasn't there. Since he never saw her again, he started pretending the ocean was his parent.
He looked up to the Knights Templar as most of his kings were belonged to the order, making him a Templar nation. The Knights Templar acted as a surrogate father figure and he refused to hunt them down when they were banished by France and the Vatican. Instead, he gave him refuge and created the Order of Christ from the remaining knights, becoming one of the Templar's few heirs. He was devastated when the Knights Templar eventually died.
Even though he's Catholic, he has no problem telling the Vatican to piss off, as shown with the Templars, and refusing the pay the Pope when he demanded money to acknowledge him as an independent nation.
Both admires and envies Spain since they grew up fighting each other and since Spain was much bigger and closer to the other countries in Central Europe, Portugal felt constantly overshadowed by him, watching Spain broad back while he stood in the shadow, usually ignored and unknown by the rest of Europe.
This lead him to have a huge inferiority complex and somber personality when compared with Spain, who was known for being loud and cheerful. Even though Portugal is friendly, he a lot more careful with his emotions, since he's afraid people won't like or care about him. Because he was so little known across Europe, he grew up very lonely.
Didn't help that most of his superiors kept comparing him with Spain. "Why aren't you more like Spain?" "Why can't you be a real country?"
He met England during the Siege of Lisbon way back in 1147, and they made an alliance in 1386 and it's still in force to this day. His relationship with England is also very complicated. Portugal was thrilled to have a friend, especially an important and really well-known friend like England, so he was very eager to please him and disregarded the times when England wasn't such a good friend (like when England's pirates stole from his shores, his ships or tricked him with bad treaties). He believed that loyalty would always mean more.
It all changed when England threatened to attack Lisbon if Portugal didn't hand over the lands between Angola and Mozambique to build a railroad. That was the moment he realized how one-sided their friendship was and he almost cut ties with him entirely, even wrote his national anthem's lyrics on how much he wanted to shot England with cannons. Despite this, he didn't, and he accepted refugees from Gibraltar during WWII and leaned towards the Allies despite being neutral out of respect for England.
He loves all his kids and he knows he really screwed them up, so nowadays he tries to mend his relationship with Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé e Príncipe and Timor. Macau was the kid he adopted from China and who never gave him trouble at all, the one he couldn't be very present because of the distance but ended up very successful on his own, who lived with Port the longest and still sends him money when Port needs it (2017 wildfires).
He considers Brazil is greatest legacy, and his both proud and worried since Brazil has been struggling politically for the last decade. Brazil independence was one of his greatest heartbreaks, especially since it happened so close to the Earthquake/Tsunami that destroyed Lisbon, followed by the Napoleonic Wars, where he stayed fighting the French while his king and court fled to Brazil, which left him feeling discarded (again, those abandonment issues).
They still talk very frequently, Port is a huge fan of Brazil's music and telenovelas. When his football team loses, he roots for Brazil, and though he doesn't know it, Portugal never stopped watching him from afar after 200 years of independence and pays attention to all Brazil's news.

The Scotsman and the Mystery of El Bosque Del Fauno, Chapter Eight
The end (or is it?) of Alasdair’s Adventures behind the jump...
The world flickered back into view, and Alasdair found himself stripped bare and strapped to a table, unable to move. For a moment, he thought he was paralyzed, perhaps to witness his own dissection while still living, and despaired; soon, the medicine fog began to clear, and he realized he was simply bound too tightly to move more than his eyes and mouth. He was, unfortunately, still naked.
“You’re finally awake,” said the Guardian, looming over him. “Good. I was worried XJ had gone overboard with the tranquilizers. We didn’t expect you to put up such a fight.”
“Not you again!” Alasdair grumbled. “If you mean to kill me, do it now. I’m not going back to that cell.”
“What a drama queen! I can’t just kill you, you know,” the Guardian said, looking annoyed. “You still have a role to play in the timestream. Well, multiple roles. Which is why you’re here, anyways.”
The Guardian gestured, and a globe emerged. “You’ve seen a globe before, right?”
“I’m not so unlearned I think the world is flat. I’ve sailed--”
“Sure you have! Anyways.” A few more flicks of the being’s hands, and Alasdair eventually realized what he was looking at.
“Holland? Why are you showing me Holland?”
“That’s where our next bubble is headed. So, the Dutch Republic, circa 1608, give or take a few weeks and the change from Gregorian to Julian and maybe a couple of hundred miles in any direction, up, down, or sideways. Do you know anything about that time?”
Alasdair wondered, not for the last time, if he really had died and gone to hell. “War with England, sometimes. War with Spain, more frequently. Pirates in the North Sea. There was some business with tulips and buying on credit. Lots of people roaming about with neckerchiefs starched out like millstones. Rembrandt, of course, and Vermeer. There were some English garrison towns...”
“Groundbreaking. What did you do, read Lonely Planet the night before the test? Well, there goes Bee getting any help with that term paper.” The being gestured again, frowning, and now three portraits hovered between them. They were all of himself, although the dour faces and severe mustaches--now he knew he’d look right awful with a mustache--made him wonder if the Guardian hadn’t gone digging in the McCarric vault.
“You have to choose a new life. So, you’re either of these three pillars of society.”
“Do I have to have a mustache?” Alasdair asked.
“You say that like it’s a bad thing,” the Guardian said. “Yes, you can stay clean-shaven if you’re so horrified by growing a mustache.”
“Do I get to know anything about what I’m getting into?” Alasdair snapped. “I’m not just choosing a new life based on how least poorly-groomed my face would be, am I?”
“I have to explain everything for you, ugh!” The being said. “Next time, I’m picking for you.”
“Next time?!” Alasdair cried. “Oh, ye gods and little fishes, preserve me from ever seeing you again!”
“Ń̶͓̟̤̞̉̽̔ę̵̡̼̮̣̯̜͆̒̇̒̀̒͒͜v̵̭̮̳̝̗̩͐̋̍͆̊̑̔͗͗͝ͅe̷̢̢̝͖̞̟͐̌̑͊͋͛̆̀͝r̸̘̗̭̲̃͊̂̽̀̐͘̚͘͝ ̵̧̮̫̯̙͖̂͋̓̊̾̚m̵̡̬͈͎̀͛̈́͝͝i̶̧̳̮̦̩̹̘̼͊́̽̎͠͝ͅṅ̴̰̪̘͚̩̬̝̮̋̀͌̃͌̓̅̽͘ḏ̷̡̲̟̳̜̙͛̌̂̕͠ ̴̢̩̗̻͎͈̥̆̓̋̌̓͋́͐͘͘ͅţ̴̜̓̒̏͊͌ḧ̴̨̗̻͍̭̔̌̇́͘͜͠à̷̹̼̞͍̪̻̞͖̣͗́t̴͇̳̞͈̭͇̙̀̑̃̎̿͠!̴̢̲̹͍̫̘̎̓̐̀̉̊̈́” A pointer, as if the Guardian were a schoolteacher explaining a lesson, also materialized from nowhere.
“This is William Beaton,” the being said, pointing to the man on the left with a black feathered hat. “He’s an apothecary in Flushing. Unmarried, no children--yet--”
“I can’t be an apothecary,” Alasdair pointed out. “I don’t know anything about medicine. And I don’t speak Dutch! I’m not about to send myself hurtling into the past to poison someone and be burnt at the stake!”
“We’ll teach you everything you need to know.” Somehow, Alasdair was not convinced.
“I don’t think I want to be an apothecary. Who are the other two?”
“This is Red Finbarr of Barra, a privateer--”
“Absolutely not! I’m not ending up in a gibbet!”
“Why are you so picky? Do you know how excited some people would be to become a pirate?”
“Also, my uncle--my father’s family has relatives in the Caribbean,” Alasdair said. “Surely someone as knowledgeable as you--”
“You’re not even biologically related to most of them! And Finbarr was never known to go deeper into the Atlantic than the Faroes--”
“What’s all this past tense and ‘he was known to’? Are these real people I’m replacing?”
“Not really? I mean, they’re more...aggregates. It’s not really identity theft, or anything.”
Alasdair had a horrifying image of someone stealing his life, some hapless outsider (the bewildered apothecary, or worse, a corsair--heaven only knew what the third person would be) beguiled by the Guardian into living out the rest of his days. A surge of anger flashed through him--that was his family, however distant, his commission, his friends, his horse, his books--at least he didn’t have a wife or a sweetheart, to also yield to this imagined impostor. (And, of course, he wasn’t really the type to give someone horns, even in the hypothetical; the thought of some burgher’s wife thinking he really was her Jan or Pieter, dandling someone else’s children on his knee while they had no idea who he really was, made him faintly nauseous.) “I’m not stealing someone’s life! That’s horrid!”
“Fine, Mr. Picky. You don’t want to stay in the Nexus, and then it’s too immoral to go back into reality... Here’s door number three--if you don’t choose one of these, I’m turning you into a goat. A sentient goat.”
“Or you could just kill me. I think it’d be easier,” Alasdair said.
“No. Killing’s too good for you.” The being stabbed the pointer rather viciously this time. “Alexander Cummings, a saffron merchant living in Campvere.”
“That’s a tulip he’s holding, not a saffron.” Alasdair thought for a moment. “Why are you so insistent on these three...guises? Are they going to replace me?”
“No, they all turned up their noses at your life, too,” the Guardian said, rather nastily. “Every person has their own...significance in the time stream.”
“So you want me to muck things up even further, then.”
“I have a few people in the region who also went through the Nexus. I want you to keep an eye on them.”
Alasdair had a mental image of some of the nastier members of his father’s crew...and his mother’s less scrupulous protectors. He did not much care for the idea of being an enforcer for the Guardian’s schemes. (Perhaps, though, a saffron merchant would have less chances for skulduggery than a corsair or an apothecary? Surely this Alexander Cummings wasn’t the type who personally went to the Ottomans to find his goods, or squabbled with Venetians in squalid back rooms!) “And what’s in it for me, if I’m your enforcer?”
“You’re not sent back to the Stone Age or turned into a goat? Isn’t that enough of a benefit for you?”
“I suppose. But I still don’t speak Dutch, and my hair’s awful short compared to his.”
“We have some time until the rift opens.” The Guardian snapped their fingers, and another group of mechanicals emerged. One had a tailor’s ham in its hands and pins in its mouth; another had a precarious tower of books; a third had a pair of scissors and a curious-looking bottle.
“Meanwhile, you’re going to be getting a bit more...hah...out of date.”
Alasdair was soon dragged off into a room with an array of strange devices throughout. He was pushed onto a platform, and then the harrying began. “Arm out, please,” said one mechanical, who then began measuring him for a new suit of clothes.
“The muttonchops have to go,” said the other, tilting his face its way, and Alasdair flinched at the advancing scissors.
“But they make me look dashing!” he protested, to no avail.
“Compiling trade route statistics,” said the third, its jointed fingers and stalk-like eye breezing through the stack of books with a dizzying speed Alasdair envied. “...Bingely-bing! Personality programming complete.”
“Personality what? I’m fine the way I am, thank you!”
“The hair needs to grow at least five inches at the sides...and he needs a goatee...”
“Och, no.”
“Green wool doublet and cannions, perhaps a nice mulberry sleeve in velvet…”
“No! No velvet! It’s too hot for velvet--”
“Enabling time dilation…”
His hair and facial hair grew at an alarming rate; the mechanical with the tailor’s ham whizzed about him, poking and prodding, until suddenly he was encased in a costume that itched and made him long for a good pair of trousers and a shirt. His hair and beard, even his eyebrows and nails, were trimmed as if he were a topiary in a garden. His mind was overwhelmed by new knowledge, facts and grammatical clauses and memories that he knew weren’t his and had never happened to him crammed into his skull until he felt he was going insane. Perhaps he had.
“Time dilation complete.”
Blinking, he looked at the mechanicals surrounding him, his reflection in the glass. That was, indeed, his reflection, he realized with mounting horror.
“What have ye done to me?” he cried, looking at himself. His hair was slicked back and curled under at the ends, grazing the starched millstone ruff he was wearing; he had a mustache and goatee that made him look a pompous fool; he was, indeed, clad in green wool and mulberry velvet. “I look awful!” (Well, his calves looked excellent, but calves did not a man’s appearance make.)
“Stop whining!” said the Guardian, who had come into the room when he was unaware, or perhaps while he was contemplating the disastrous...thing on his upper lip. While some of his men had grown them, falling into the French idea that it was dashing and that their waxed mustaches were simply teeming with masculine derring-do, he had always thought they looked rather foolish. “You look nice in green, at least.”
“But I--”
“It’s time to go, you wouldn’t want to be late to your future, now would you?” The Guardian seized hold of him by the shoulders, clawed hands gripping his thrice-damned velvet sleeves so tightly he thought he might actually be mauled.
With that, he was once more shoved through a dizzying array of corridors until he was brought into a room that resembled something like a canal lock, only there was no water. “Suppose this is a canal lock, and not just another strange little room. Suppose they unleash the canal the instant I let my guard drop. I’d be drowned like a rat,” he thought to himself. “I suppose drowning is better than whatever was meant to happen to me in the woods, but what a choice.”
“Must you be so melodramatic?” The Guardian said, stepping behind a partition. “All this frowning and sighing and raising your voice. I can’t wait until you’re inflicting this Lord Byron nonsense on someone else.”
“Wh--how dare you, sir!” Alasdair spluttered. “I’ll have you know--”
Before he could make his reply--certain to have more than a few oaths and imprecations--a bright light flashed; he felt himself pulled once more by an unseen force, forward and back and side to side...
Credits
Now and forever, thanks to all of you who read this and left such nice comments!
Of course, my eternal thanks and gratitude to @danjaley, who was so gracious as to allow Alasdair and Daniel into the McCarric(k) clan, and for creating an excellent stable of poses; @moocha-muses, for letting me borrow Dan O’Doyle; @rennylurant for costuming advice and squealing over renaissance fashions/advice; @studiok2sims, for even more excellent poses and advice; @tolkiensimmer for advice on lighting and costuming; and @treason-and-plot for helping me get “unstuck” on several occasions and finding certain things I needed for the sequel. Why yes, Virginia, there is a sequel. It’s my NANOWRIMO PROJECT. MUAHAHAHAHAHA.
Happy Halloween!!!!!

Aph America and England Power Headcanons
These two both have experience being world superpowers but I think it’s super interesting to think about their character motivations for how they got there and how they handle that power.
England
He started out with a goal and he achieved it
Since he was a kid he aimed to be powerful enough that people wouldn’t invade him anymore and was relentless in achieving that
At points he’d forget why he was on this quest for power in the first place as the became obsessed with getting more and more powerful
He was constantly getting into wars against France and a big part of that was to prove that he wasn’t that weak kid anymore and actually someone to be seen as a threat
After the American revolution was when he took a step back and gain some perspective
Most of the other nations resented him and he’d spent decades growing an empire without ever taking a real break
After that he took a step back and stopped focusing so much on it
He spent some time actually enjoying himself without the fear that he would be invaded, at this point he was confident that the other nations couldn’t beat him
He sailed around as a pirate for a few years but whenever he met other nations he’s still played the role of a fearsome superpower
He carried himself with a cocky arrogance that infuriated the likes of Spain but Arthur’s a superpower so he doesn’t care what they think of him as a person so long as they acknowledge his strength
America
Unlike England he never really set out to become a superpower
He took care of himself and worked hard to make his own life and his people’s lives better, he didn’t care about the rest of the world
It was the world wars when his perspective began to change
He’d been isolated for so long and now people needed him to be the hero
If you want a bit darker we could say that he enjoyed the feeling of people needing him specifically those who he used to look up to so much as a child
I can’t picture power truly getting into canon America’s head too much
He’s not obsessed with it unlike England, America doesn’t feel need to prove himself in that sense
His main aim once he got that power though was to stay ahead of Russia, more for his pride than anything else
He doesn’t care if he’d not the number one superpower as long as Ivan isn’t
If anything i think Alfred would see being a superpower as more of a hinderance in his life
To simply compare the two:
When England was a superpower he flaunted his power, he wanted to prove to other nations just how strong the British Empire was whereas America never even set out to be a superpower.
While people regarded Arthur and the British Empire with resentment, they would regard Alfred with fear because if he truly showed how powerful he was it would reveal how today’s superpowers are in such a different ballpark to the ones of the past.
So while England kept acting the part of a strong and dangerous superpower to maintain his countries reputation in a sense, Alfred try’s to distance himself from that label by acting the part of an idiot and being sometimes overly friendly to keep his personal reputation in tact.
Basically Arthur wanted people to fear him but the kind of fear Arthur wanted would’ve been totally different to the kind of fear people would show Alfred if he acted like the bad guy
I’m also still formulating exactly how they handle losing power, like for England the world wars must’ve been a shock to the system but I feel like by the end of the 2nd world war he was ready to give up the title of superpower, he had a good run and the new kinds of war don’t have the same appeal to him as fight with swords and bows and arrows. He was ready to accept that he couldn’t compete and he didn’t really want to compete to be a superpower at that time.
And I don’t know if America really cares too much about losing his power. Like I’m sure he’d care about the superficialities but it would probably only hurt his pride for a bit but overall he’d probably enjoy life a lot more without the pressures. Though if it was Russia that overtook him I don’t think he’d take it well. Being a superpower doesn’t play a big role in his identity though I’m sure he is scared that if he does lose the title that people will just dismiss him and he’ll be alone again. Maybe a subconscious part of worries that acting the fool might stop them from fearing him but no one will respect him without the title of superpower and they’ll all look at him like he’s a kid again.
I think that in the back of all superpowers heads there is the fear that they’ll fall like Rome, I think after ww2 England took his money and stopped gambling.
So generally I think England and America would both be grateful to some degree that although they aren’t the most powerful countries anymore at least theyre still here.
Yikes, this is kind of all over the place but it’s 5am and I can’t be bothered redrafting this 😂 I might redo this at some point in time and write it exactly but halfway through this I just wanted to write a list on their similarities so that’s probably what I’ll be doing next

Cottagecore Films (pt. 11)
A Little Princess (1995)
starring Liesel Matthews, Liam Cunningham, Vanessa Chester, Eleanor Bron
synopsis
I was extremely disappointed in this film, to put it lightly. The story itself was beautiful, but that is thanks exclusively to the novel on which it was based. The movie itself utterly failed to convey the magic and timelessness of the book. The acting was flat, emotionless, and forced at every point, from every actor (except for maybe Cunningham, but he was absent for half of it). One would think a gaggle of girls would have some form of natural chemistry, whether pulling them together or apart, but not a single child actor portrayed even the remotest semblance of a relationship to another. (Note: I describe in my review of Pan’s Labyrinth what quality acting from a child looks like, for reference.) Even Matthews and Cunningham could not pass a believable father-daughter relationship, despite the story being about that. As far as emotional acting, the adults were just as bad as the children. They couldn’t even feign a single moment of joy, sadness, or anger, regardless of the context. I actually laughed for the entire scene during which Sara nearly died because of how bad the acting from the adults was. At least Chester seemed somewhat worried; Bron and the nameless police officers stood around so vacantly it looked like they forgot what was happening. I really was appalled by the abysmal acting, especially when so much was handed to them in the story. I want to preface my next point by saying that yes, I know computer animation was still a work in progress in the 90s. But this was horrifyingly awful. I have never once, not in my entire life, seen CGI as terrible as the monster in Sara’s stories. I nearly gave up on the entire movie within the first five minutes because of that monster. And it kept showing up, which absolutely ruined whatever favor I tried to hold for this movie. If you don’t have the budget, which this film clearly didn’t, don’t try to animate a monster. It’s that simple. I wish I had more words for it but it was truly so atrocious that I’m at a loss. Any good will I hold for this movie is due to my fondness for the story (no credit to the film), the settings (while not exceptional, they were fairly pretty), and Liam Cunningham’s acting. 2/10
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)
TW: blood, mild gore, torture, racism against indigenous people
starring Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Clive Owen, Abbie Cornish, Jordi Mollà, Samantha Morton
This film is the sequel to Elizabeth (1998) (see part 10 of my film reviews), which continues the story of Queen Elizabeth I as her rule progresses. Tensions between Catholic Spain and Protestant England grow ever greater, escalating to treasonous plots and assassination attempts. Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, and King Philip II of Spain conspire to depose Elizabeth and place Mary on the throne, restoring Catholicism as the national religion. Even as these events lead to war between the two superpowers, the court provides no sense of stability as new faces and new stresses surround the Virgin Queen. She forms a strong friendship with the pirate Walter Raleigh upon his return trip from the New World, where he seeks to establish colonies under the English flag. However, his stay is extended greatly when Elizabeth’s selfishness and pride take over, and are only broken down in the face of battle when she puts him at the forefront of the British navy. Outnumbered, Elizabeth will need Raleigh’s loyalty and cunning, along with the unwavering loyalty of her people, if they wish to survive the Spanish onslaught.
While still a drama, this film proved to be much more war-oriented than its predecessor, but I’m not sure it did either as well. I liked the deeper look this film gave us into the Elizabeth’s mind, especially with her social and emotional conflicts. They remind us that she is still human, despite the somewhat cold appearance the first film gave her at the end. She is more mature, and even more prideful, but there’s still a limit to what she can take as a person. I think the first film gave a better portrayal of her complicated mind, but this was a solid continuation of what years of ruling can do. I also liked how much detail they put into Raleigh’s character, which the first film didn’t do as well with its secondary characters. We got to know more about him, even if he did still feel somewhat surface-level. I think the dramatic aspects could have felt more high-stakes than they did, especially for the characters who were actually in danger. Even though so many characters were actively committing treason, I only felt that level of tension with one: Mary Stuart. Her death was particularly elegant and laden with symbolism, and even though I knew the outcome historically the scene still delivered the anxiety it was meant to. The others simply didn’t have the same delivery. Even the assassination attempt didn’t project any kind of concern, regardless of one’s historical knowledge. The war focus was a fairly different take than the first had, which I appreciated. The film established a strong balance between the tensions in England, Scotland, and Spain, and did a good job making the stakes very clear for each group. Given the uncritically positive stance on England that this film takes, I would have expected the film to villainize Spain a little more to form a stronger dichotomy between the two rulers, but Spain was presented rather neutrally to the audience. The Spanish ruler and nobles didn’t have much character, despite being the antagonist. As for that uncritical positivity regarding England, I do have a bit more to say. Although to an extent it makes sense that the film would lean in favor of England, given its content and the point of view from which the story is told, it became overbearing at times. England could do no wrong in this film, despite children dying in battle, indigenous people being humiliated and dehumanized for show, talk about slavery, and a complete disregard for the suffering of non-white and non-Protestant groups. In contrast, the first film heavily criticized England, from Mary of Guise shaming Elizabeth for sending young children to war, to Elizabeth frowning upon Walsingham’s torture methods (granted she never stopped them, but she didn’t approve as readily as she did in this film), and so on. Although England in truth did all of these things without rebuke, the film could have handled it more gracefully and came across less like propaganda, at the very least. 5/10
Loving Vincent (2017)
TW: suicide (action offscreen, death onscreen)
Sensory Warning: movement of the impressionistic paintings can be very disorienting for those with sensory processing difficulties. I had to break from watching multiple times so as not to become ill.
starring Douglas Booth, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jerome Flynn, Robert Gulaczyk
This fully hand-painted animated film follows Armand Roulin, a young man with a severe temper, on his way to deliver Vincent Van Gogh’s last letter to a living recipient. When he reaches the town where Vincent died, he begins speaking to a variety of villagers with their own stories about the artist, and their own theories about how he died. Armand tries to piece the puzzle together, wondering if the death was not a suicide as claimed, but rather something more sinister.
This film was spectacularly breathtaking. The amount of work that went into painting every scene was awe-inspiring, and definitely sets the bar high for any other films of its kind. The team of artists that created this film represented Van Gogh’s unique art style exquisitely through their loving application of oil-based paints, and truly brought to life the emotion he put into his works. I wish I hadn’t struggled so much with the constant movement, as I feel I would have been able to appreciate the film in its entirety better, but as it was I struggled to pay attention to the story because the art style consumed too much of my sensory processing capabilities. As for the story, I thought it was interesting, but I found it lacking despite the incredible artwork. Foremost, after some cursory research, I discovered that the homicide theory on which this film was based was only acknowledge by one individual, and spurned by hundreds of others. Although the film leaves the verdict open-ended, both to Roulin and to the audience, the story itself seemed to lean into the homicide theory, then completely give up on it with no resolution, so it came across as fairly noncommittal. I won’t argue for or against the theory, as I don’t know nearly enough about Van Gogh to assert an opinion, but I’m somewhat unsettled by the amount of weight it gave to it without any kind of evidentiary support, only to dump it as if the writers changed their mind themselves. The pacing was also slow for a murder mystery, which is basically what the story turned out to be. I would much have preferred the film to cover Vincent’s life, or even the days/weeks leading up to his death, instead of only featuring him in other people’s flashbacks. This kind of existential impressionism should capture the life of its creator, not the mundane views of people who didn’t understand him or even hated him. There wasn’t anything wrong with the film, per se, but I wish the writing was given as much love as the art was. 7/10

I recently came across the title of an Arabic book, “We will never live as Dhimmis” (lan naish zimieen), written by a Lebanese Christian, Amin Naji, in 1979.
A Dhimmi is a Christian or Jew living in a region overrun by Muslim conquest who was accorded a protected status in exchange of a poll tax (Jizya), and allowed to retain his or her original faith.
Lebanon is an example. It was established after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the end of World War I in 1923. Since the majority there were Christians, unlike any other Middle Eastern land, the French mandated a Christian president and commander in chief. Then, in 1975, a civil war broke out over the political privileges of Christians and the rights of Lebanese Muslims who had become the majority of the country.
In his book, Naji discusses the destruction of pre-civil war Lebanon by a coalition of Muslim militias and their Palestinian allies. He wrote of violence and annihilation. He also listed one of the tools that had been used, before the war, by Muslim “conquerors.” It is “the Arabization via distorting history, changing the national identity, and destroying culture”. This cultural jihad gets too little attention and is too little understood.
Some U.S. Muslims are applying this basic scheme here. They do not have adequate political control in the U.S. to simply impose a new Islamic culture on our society. But they are infiltrating the culture by claiming that Muslims and Islam have long been central contributors to American governance and culture.
Western audiences often hear these Muslim declarations as an appeal to the wider society and to allow Muslims to be real participants in the E Pluribus Unum experiment that is America. We would do well to remind ourselves of the old Arabic proverb about the camel’s nose under the tent.
One egregious example of this groundwork for cultural Jihad appears in the PBS program “History Detectives”. It claims, “When the first Muslims came to the land that would become the United States is unclear. Many historians claim that the earliest Muslims came from the Senegambian region of Africa in the early 14th century. It is believed they were Moors, expelled from Spain, who made their way to the Caribbean and possibly to the Gulf of Mexico.”
PBS claims that when Columbus made his journey to the United States, he carried a book written by Portuguese Muslims who had navigated their way to the New World in the 12th century.
Others—most notably a man named Istafan—claim there were Muslims who accompanied the Spanish as a guide to the New World in their early 16th century conquest of what became Arizona and New Mexico.
The make-up of the first real wave of Muslims in the United States is clear. They were African slaves of whom ten to fifteen percent were said to be Muslims. It was difficult for them to maintain their religion and many were forcibly converted to Christianity. Any effort to practice Islam, and keep the traditional clothing and names alive had to be done in secret.
Edwin’s Gaustad in his nearly encyclopedic book, “A Documentary History of Religion in America to the civil war” (Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company; 2nd edition (April 1993), does not mention any social, cultural, or intellectual contribution from Muslims to early America. Could the absence prove the point?
There are farcical claims that Thomas Jefferson relied on the Quran as a source of inspiration and insight regarding the writing of the American constitution. One might well find Denise Spellberg’s book Jefferson’s Quran interesting—though not insightful—on the matter. However, nowhere in Jefferson’s constitution is there any overt quotation or allusion to the Quran.
In his book, Jefferson’s War, Joseph Wheelan noted that after Jefferson created an American Navy to combat Muslim pirates in North Africa, and American forces had their first major victory under Lieutenant Andrew Sterett, there was celebration in the United States at the defeat of the Muslim pirates. President Jefferson used the navy and marines to make real progress in defeating what was commonly called “The Terror”. (Wheelan, Joseph, Jefferson’s War, Carroll and Graf Publishing, NY 2003, p. 119)
Nothing in Jefferson’s combat against the Muslim corsairs of North Africa indicates any appreciation of Muslim culture or Islamic approach to governance.
In December, 2019, the Muslim American Society (MAS)-Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) held a convention in Chicago–the largest in the nation. At the convention, guest speaker Dalia Moghahed, gave a speech titled “Muslims that Shaped America,” captured on video. She began by responding to a plaintive cry from a Muslim American mother who asked, “What can we do to help our children who face constant verbal attacks, name-calling, insults and micro aggressions at their schools against their identity; only because they are Muslims?’”
Ms. Mogahed said that Muslims need to be given the intellectual tools to confront “the flawed and crooked framework that make up the ideas of Islamophobia.” They are to teach that “their roots as Muslims in this country run deep” and “This is their country, and no one has the right to tell them otherwise” and “no one should be waiting for a welcome to their own house.” Ms. Mogahed also said, “So if someone has a problem with our children being here, then they can go back to where they came from … This is not mere rhetoric, but historical fact.”
She then made her case for this point of view.
She stated, “There were Muslims with Christopher Columbus when he landed in the Americas” and “It is important to note that the first country to recognize the United States as an independent nation was Morocco.” She also said, “This is just to lay a framework to challenge the myth that there is an inherent and inevitable conflict between the values of the United States and the values of Muslim societies, civilizations or communities. It is simply not supported by logic or history.” Furthermore she said, “Estimates range from 10 % to 30% of enslaved Africans brought to the United States were Muslims.”
Ms. Mogahed’s efforts are not sophisticated, but exemplify, at the popular level, the clash between Western open society and Muslim ideology today.
More eloquent and polished Islamist apologists and speakers are preparing their own versions of this Islamic claim. We cannot only worry about violent Jihad, we must recognize and confront the academic effort to lay claim to the United States as a legitimate possession of the House of Islam that is now temporarily controlled by the Kuffar (infidels).
Social and political theorist and philosopher Isaiah Berlin said in his lectures, “the German poet Heine warned the French not to underestimate the power of ideas: philosophical concepts nurtured in the stillness of a professor’s study could destroy a civilization.” (“Two Concepts of Liberty,” “Four Essays on Liberty,” Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1969, p. 120)
To this thought about a professor’s power we must add “or an imam”. Distorting history by inserting Muslim memes into the nation’s historical ethos and shoving pre-Islamic society aside has worked before in Islamic history.
Now, they are applying this ideological approach as an initial blow for the Islamization of our society and to supplant our open society ideals

Hurricane part 2
Um, okay. So I wrote a thing. And it's awful, but some people wanted to see a sequel?? And I really hope I didn't ruin this, but here ya go. My apologies in advance.
Part 1
~3250 words
@tesserphantom @bonjour-frens @viper-official
~~~~~~~
As it turned out, James was a capable sailor. He worked tirelessly, never complaining. At first you were surprised; surely the navy didn’t work so hard for so little. They, at least, had consistent pay, and quite a bit more shore leave. You were grateful that he kept any negativity to himself. He hadn’t made any comments about your being a pirate- or pirates in general- since he had been accepted into the crew.
That being said, he was still cold towards the crew. It appeared that he didn’t make friends easily. The poor man sat alone during meals, and your first mate talked about the distance he kept from others. It perturbed you. You weren’t sure if he was still an officer at heart, or if his antisocial behavior was a part of who he was. You hoped for the latter. Still, you felt the need to bring it up before anyone got the wrong idea and tried to throw him overboard.
You pulled him aside when he was switching watches. Surely the others could handle a few minutes of work by themselves. “James,” you started, “I’ve noticed that you haven’t been very social.”
He seemed taken aback by the comment and more than a little confused.
“A crew is a family. We spend all our days together. The others feel a little uncomfortable with your distance. Talking with them would help you become a crewmember in their eyes.”
“I hadn’t thought of that,” he said. Furrowing his brow, he added, “I can try.”
It occurred to you then that James wasn’t a social person by nature. “Were you this distant from others in the navy?”
“I suppose I was. I was more focused on what I was working towards.”
“And what are your goals here? Do they distract you all that much?”
“Well…” he trailed off. “I’m not sure I can improve my position, really.” He looked to you with questioning eyes.
“I’m afraid you likely can’t.” You watched his face, finding only a little disappointment there. “Though I’d like to see you make some friends. I think it would do you good.”
You dismissed him to continue his work. He left you with a practiced nod. You watched him get to work, hauling himself up the rigging to the sails. He’d forsaken his old clothes, opting for a loose shirt and plain trousers. It suited him. His dark hair was put back in a braid, and the ties of his shirt were loose in a most attractive manner. He hadn’t shaved in a good long while; the beginnings of a beard were growing.
You still weren’t entirely sure how you felt about him. There were, of course, things that he’d done which you couldn’t forgive. Yet when you looked at him, there was a sadness about him that tugged at your heart. He still despaired. It was written all over his face. You wanted to hate him for what he’d done, but at the same time, you wanted to comfort and like him.
You sighed. It was too complicated to think about. All you needed to know was that he was good at the job you’d given him. Upon making a full recovery, he had become most useful. You were still afraid that he’d be recognized the next time you engaged a naval ship in battle. At the moment, you preferred not to think of it.
The fresh food had run out days ago. The crew grumbled from time to time, but there was little you could do about it. You wished there was a better way to store perishable items onboard, but there wasn’t, and everyone would have to make do. Although, you’d be the first to admit that regular rations weren’t satisfying.
A thin boy scurried down to the deck from the crow’s nest. He jogged up to you, worry painted on his face. “A blockade, Cap’n. Or what looks like one.”
A blockade was not good news. You’d been sailing towards Tortuga. Your ship needed a few repairs after its fight with the navy. “What colors are they flying?”
“British, Cap’n.”
“The Brits put a blockade around Haiti? What for?” Then, it occurred to you that if you could see them, they could see you. “Have they seen us?”
“I don’t think so, but they will soon if we don’t leave.”
You sent the boy back up into the rigging to find James. If anyone knew something about the British blockade, it would be him.
James walked up to you a scant few minutes later. He tucked a loose strand of hair behind his ear. “You asked for me?”
“I did. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about a British blockade against Haiti, would you?”
“I knew that relations between Spain and England were becoming strained, but the blockade is a new development. It must have been ordered after I left on the Dauntless.”
“How inconvenient.” You looked out to sea, and you spotted the faint outlines of ships on the horizon. “You don’t think any of those ships would break line to attack us, would they?”
“I think we should be safe if we keep our current distance. If we sail too close, they can attack us in force, but I doubt they’ll give chase to a far away ship.” James, too, looked out over the waves, squinting to see.
“I hope this doesn’t last too long,” you muttered. It was more to yourself than to James, but you were sure he heard anyway. “This ship needs repairs at some point. We can’t go on with holes in our hull forever.
You directed the ship just out of the line of sight of the blockade. That night, you refused to light any candles onboard, just to be safe. You lay awake, trying to figure out how to slip past the ships around Haiti. Surely the British hadn’t cut off all of Haiti; they didn’t have enough ships. Did they?
You were afraid that without repairs, your ship might be further damaged. If such a thing happened, you’d have no choice but to sail straight into the blockade. If you did that…
You tried not to think about it. You shut your eyes and prayed for sleep.
It was just as you dozed off that your first mate burst into your room. A gust of cold air accompanied him, making you glad for your thick blanket. You rolled over, squinting against the moonlight.
“Captain, we have an emergency.” Just the tone of his voice told you as much.
“What’s happened?” You croaked, still not fully awake. You feared the navy had come for you after all.
“We’ve hit a reef. Some of the planks down below have split, and water’s gushing into the hull. I have people on the bilge pumps, but I don’t think it’ll be enough. The water’s flowing through those cracks hard, and the carpenter’s having a hard time getting close enough to repair the cracks.”
You were out of bed and shrugging on a jacket by the time he was finished. “How deep is the water?”
“Around knee height, Captain.”
You swore. Bailing water wasn’t fun, nor would it likely be of much use. You’d have to rely on the bilge pumps, though you doubted they would suck out enough of the water to make a significant difference. As long as they kept the water at knee-level, you’d be happy.
You scampered down to the bilges, bare feet hitting the wood hard where you descended the stairs. You hit the final floor with a loud splash. If you hadn't been awake before, you certainly were now. The freezing water sent a shock through your entire body, even if you were only just past your knees in it.
Men sloshed to and fro through the water, carrying bundles of wood and tools to seal the breaches. There were quite a few cracks in the hull. You weren’t familiar with such things happening. If you were to be perfectly honest, it frightened you.
You were called over by one of the crew. He directed you to a breach. There, the water gushed out in torrents, soaking the poor men trying to brace new wood against the crack. You stepped up, trying to help keep the wood in position. The men next to you were close enough that their bodies were right up against yours. Seawater spilled out from the crack and onto your chest; the breach was at head height.
Together, you pressed the wood into position, and someone hammered it into place. When you stepped back, you couldn’t lift your arms. They screamed at you, aching from the strain of holding the water at bay. Yet when you looked up, the wood held, doing its job in sealing the hole that had been there.
You moved on to another crack. It was larger, and there were four of you keeping the wood in place. When you stepped back from it after it was sealed, you couldn’t feel your arms at all.
The only things left were little leaks. They hardly required effort to patch, but you still strained to keep the wood in place. The last leak you helped with was over your head, and you struggled in keeping your arms up.
You forced yourself up the stairs and onto the next floor. It was dry there, but you could hardly tell. You were soaked through. You'd fallen over multiple times as the ship lurched to get off the reef.
Exhausted, you sank against the wall. Your head fell onto someone's shoulder as you drifted off to sleep, but you hardly noticed. If you had, you likely wouldn't have cared.
You awoke to groaning from the rest of the crew. Most of them had been too tired to return to their hammocks. Everyone was sprawled in odd positions, tossed about by the ship. You were no longer propped up against the wall, but lying on the floor, half on top of someone.
They stirred, and you heaved yourself off their chest with leaden arms. You found yourself looking down into the face of James. He raised his eyebrows, but said nothing.
Looking around, you noticed that most of the crew were going back to sleep. Some were wandering off to their hammocks, but others were closing their eyes where they'd opened them. You turned your head back to James, but he was already asleep again.
You barely had enough strength left in your arms to keep holding yourself up. You lowered yourself back onto James' chest. If anything, you told yourself, he made a good pillow.
An arm draped itself around your back. Apparently, James hadn't been entirely asleep after all. You blushed, and you might have moved off of him, but his arm laid heavy across your back and side.
It was...nice.
When you awoke for the second time, it was with frantic urgency. You had to get through that blockade. There was no telling how long the repairs to the ship would actually hold. You couldn't afford any more leaks.
You pulled yourself off of James, scrambling to your feet. People were still asleep around you, but James cracked open his eyes.
You paid him no mind, running up the stairs and onto the deck. You shook your first mate from sleep and jogged to the helmsman. James appeared soon after, rubbing sleep from his eyes.
"You wouldn't happen to know how to get through a blockade, would you?" You asked as if you hadn't been asleep on his chest only minutes past.
"In fact I don't. It wasn't particularly my line of business." He replied.
"That's a damn shame."
Later, you surmised that there were four ships surrounding Tortuga. The island was small, and you'd likely be caught by at least one. Even at night, there would be no way to pass unseen.
But you had to try, even if there was no feasible way. The moon was unfortunately bright, but you still had some cover in the dark. With all lanterns extinguished, you sailed forth.
You were doomed before you began. A British ship was waiting for you just as you created the corner of the island. You surrendered immediately. If you engaged, the ship would surely sink.
The brig was a less than pleasant place. The stench was rotten, and it hadn't been cleaned in a long time. It probably hadn't been used in a long time, but that was exactly how long it had gone without maintenance.
After a good many hours, keys rattled in the lock of your cell. You wondered if they would drag you up to the captain so you could listen to him gloat. Perhaps you could come to some kind of terms. You had money in banks up north, if only you'd be believed.
But it wasn't you they took. It was James, whom they grabbed by the hair, bending him nearly double. You called out; surely they knew he wasn't the captain. Nobody listened to you, and you only got the barrel of a gun to the gut when you tried to force your way out of the cell as it was being closed.
At some point, just after you'd dozed off against the bars, the cell was opened again. And left open. James stood outside, along with a smug looking man that you knew to be the captain. Disjointedly, people began filing out of the prison.
It was when you were filed back onto your own ship that you were truly confused. Were you being… let go?
You whipped around to find James right behind you. He stared at the deck. "For my last crew. They weren't so lucky."
"But how?" You hissed.
"Every man accepts a price."
You refrained from speaking to him again until you were back out at sea. The normality of your ship felt unreal. You should be in the brig of a naval vessel awaiting your impending doom, not commanding your crew.
Another voice whispered to you. A life for a life. He thinks he can pay his debt to his crew. The promise of redemption. But was he redeemed?
You shook the thoughts from your head, instead trotting up to him in disbelief. "How much did you promise him?"
"Currently, I'm worth less than nothing."
You looked at him, alarm on your face. Yet something about him looked smug.
"We signed a contract, in fact. It should give him most of my worldly possessions." Here, he smirked. "And he was stupid enough to think he'd get them. The crown claimed everything of mine as their own upon my deserting the navy."
"Pirate!" You accused playfully.
"It seems I'm learning." He gazed at you, smirk still in place. To your worry, his face grew serious again. "He'll probably ambush us on our way out of port. Or he'll tell someone else to look out for us."
"I wouldn't worry about that too much." You thought of Tortuga's supplies. There were giant buildings dedicated to housing supplies. "The island may be a shithole, but it can outlast a blockade for a year. With no ships coming in, we'll have all the supplies we need. Besides, the residents drink more than they eat, leaving more for us."
James looked relieved. "Good. I didn't particularly fancy trying to bribe the next man."
You were ashore within the hour. There, you hired carpenters and painters to work on the ship. You, for one, were going to take a break.
You sauntered down the gangplank, fully intending to visit a tavern. You noticed James standing on the pier, looking more than a little lost.
"James!" You called out. He was alone, which saddened you. "Still haven't made friends?" You asked once you were closer.
"Not particularly. I'm not sure the crew is fond of me."
"After that stunt you just pulled? You're everyone's friend right now." You turned, leading him up the pier. "And as I recall, making friends was an order."
"What will be my punishment?"
You were taken aback by how rakish he looked. He was unshaven, dark eyed, and smirking. Not to mention, the top of his shirt was open. "If you won't spend time with others, you have to spend it with me."
"And what would you like to do?"
"I hear there are some nice performers if you're willing to walk a minute out of the city. What do you say to a dance?" You knew said performers. Their music was beautiful, but they played away from the grotesque mess of the city.
James blushed. Ah, still himself, then. "I'm not a very good dancer, I'm afraid."
"I don't think I'll mind. Besides, it's not like any dancing you've done before. Not so formal. I think you'll learn."
You walked along together, heading out of the city and into a grove of trees. Beyond, you'd find a beach and the only sober inhabitants of Tortuga. Half-sober, anyway.
The sun was just setting as you pulled him out into the sand. A song was already going, and torches kept the beach well-lit. The music was slow and soft. People swayed with their partners in the sand.
You took James' hands, holding them between you. You tried to guide him a bit, but he was unsure of exactly how to follow. Deciding to be bolder, you set your hands on his shoulders. You were glad the darkening sky hid a bit of your blush.
Warm hands came to rest on your waist. You shivered under his touch. When was the last time someone had held you so?
"I miss just talking to you," you confessed. "When you were sick, I talked with you every day."
"Yes, I remember." James looked down at you, the height difference accented by your closeness. "I thought it odd, at the time. That you would waste time on me."
"I was trying to be courteous."
He hummed. His gaze wandered out over your shoulder. "I miss it, too. People never did that. Took time to talk with me. Ask me how I was."
You rubbed your thumb lightly against his neck. His gaze jumped back to your face. You smiled softly, drinking in his surprise. "It's how friendships start, actually. When people talk with each other." It was as genuine as it was teasing.
He swallowed. "I'd like that," he whispered. "Thank you."
"You're always thanking me for things."
"Probably because I don't deserve them."
He spoke in a way that broke your heart. He spoke like he believed his own words, like he was convinced of their truth. But you couldn't deny them. 'My fault'. Did he deserve what you gave him? Did you care?
"And yet I give them freely."
His eyes flitted everywhere except for your face. It occurred to you that he was tearing up, and he took a deep breath to steady himself. He opened his mouth as if to thank you, but he seemed to think better of it. Instead, he held you a little closer.
When his eyes settled on you again, they were full of so many emotions, you didn't know exactly what he was trying to convey. But you felt warmth. It radiated off him in waves. He cared, and you sensed that was no little thing.
And you decided it definitely wasn't so bad to have him around.
📖 Pirate AU!!! ATLA AU :)
I unfortunately have never seen ATLA (though he strikes me as a firebender, even if normally I’d say his “element” is earth) but I did get asked for a 1700s pirate AU a couple years ago and I still have it! - The 1700s is smack dab in the middle of when piracy was at its height in the Caribbean. So he’d be…a pirate of the Caribbean. Yup. - He was born in Pennsylvania, as in his standard verse, though it was of course VERY different then. His family were Anglicans, in contrast to the Quaker majority, but Shaw’s faith lay in commerce. After his father’s death from tuberculosis or cholera or something like that, there was nothing left to attach Shaw to his home. He traveled from his tiny settlement to Philadelphia, which had already become one of the most important centers in the colonies for the conduct of foreign trade and the commercial metropolis. From there he got a job as a ship hand on a ship exporting iron ore and iron products (plows, kettles, nails, etc.) to England. They were attacked en route by pirates. Shaw had no desire to die for the sake of goods that he didn’t even own nor would see profit for, and joined the pirates instead. They accept him on due both to his unusual burliness, and his frank practicality about the whole thing. - Shaw was a good pirate—too good, it turned out, when he mutinied against his former captain and overtook his crew. He redubbed them the Hellfire Kings, and began a reign of maritime terror that earned him the nickname The Black King, placing him in the company of the likes of Blackbeard and Black Bart. - Shinobi’s mother was a descendant of the Japanese who were brought to Portugal as slaves in the 1500. Lourdes was the daughter of a wealthy Spanish landowner in one of Spain’s Caribbean colonies of the time; Panama, perhaps, or Tortuga. Naturally, the love affair between a pirate king and a noblewoman was just as dramatic and romantic as any harlequin novel would make it out to be—but ended just as tragically, with Lourdes perishing at the hands of an enemy buccaneer as a strike against Shaw in a feud. - Shaw was notable for allowing women openly on his crew. While it would perhaps be incorrect to call him an early feminist of any sort, he did recognize that the female of the species is at least as deadly as the male. Famous female pirates Diamond Em and Selina the Dark are often misquoted as having been among his crew, but this is false; they were captains of their own respective crews. Diamond Em merely allied herself with Shaw when convenient (and is largely held to have been the superior plunderer and captain) whereas Selina the Dark was simply his enemy and rival, pure and simple, as she was to Diamond Em. A lesser-known woman, whose name is only recorded as “Tessa” in any documentation, seems to have been his consistent first mate, though it’s unclear where she came from—only that she would eventually turn on him, as he had his original captain. NEW ADDITIONS JUST 4 YOU - Very hands-on captain! He spends an equal time doing the whole “brooding in the cabin” thing as well as just...fuck what are physical things pirates do on ships? I don’t know, pulling up masts and shit. He’s just out there with no shirt doing a ton of physical labor and YELLING AT EVERYBODY ELSE FOR BEING LAZY. - Frankly not that good at swordfighting or at pistols. He really prefers to just punch. Has definitely punched a hole IN THE HULL OF A SHIP at least once. - He knows if he doesn’t give a fair cut to his crew, mutiny will happen...but oh god it’s so hard to fight his own greed. - Eventually gets taken down by his own son, just as he’s starting to slow down. It’s not really Shinobi that catches up with him so much as his age, really. But it ends up a pretty grand going out, involving a massive explosion that Shinobi survives...and Shaw does not. Down with the ship indeed!
Alex Pacheco is often described as the Father of the Modern Day Animal Rights Movement in the United States.
As co-founder of both the world’s largest animal rights organization (PETA) and the world’s largest non-profit animal adoption organization (Adopt-A-Pet), his 30-year track record of victories for animals is arguably unequaled. He has received many awards, ranging from induction into the Animal Rights Hall of Fame to The Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award, though his favorite is being voted Crew Member of the Year by the Sea Shepherd. From an early age, Pacheco was outraged by social injustice, and very motivated to fight against it. He grew up in the Midwest, watching the Vietnam War on television and becoming passionate about defending democracy against communism.
Too young to enlist and in high school, he wrote to the CIA asking if he could become an agent. They wrote back saying he was too young and don’t call us, we’ll call you. He then applied to the FBI and was accepted to work at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. Just days before leaving for Washington, he was talked out of it by his two mentors, Father Thomas and martial arts expert Steve Adams. It was the year of The Concert for Bangladesh, and they convinced him to instead pursue his other passion: helping impoverished children. Accordingly, he enrolled in the Scholastic Program for Ecclesiastical Students and for the next year studied to become a priest while living with three priests and seven brothers. After one year in the Ecclesiastical Program, he took a behind-the-scenes tour of a large slaughterhouse, where his passion for defending animals was unleashed.
Witnessing the brutality firsthand, he dedicated himself to defending the most helpless of all, and within days
he founded the activist organization The Ohio Animal Rights Committee at Ohio State University, and in the first month he received his first three death threats from trappers and hunters. Since then his commitment to defending animals has incited violent opposition and death threats in many shapes and sizes, from an angry man waving a loaded .44 handgun and screaming for Pacheco while in the PETA office, to anonymous packages mailed to Pacheco, containing written death threats atop the blood-soaked body parts of mutilated animals.
Over the years he has received so many death threats in the line of duty that he stopped counting early on.
In 1979 Pacheco left college to work as a crew member aboard the Sea Shepherd under Captain Paul Watson
on the Sea Shepherd’s first whale protection campaign. Sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, their mission was to ram the world’s most notorious pirate whale-killing ship, the Sierra.
Before embarking on the voyage and in anticipation of the ramming, the bow of the Sea Shepherd was fortified
with tons of concrete. In the end, both ships were sunk in Portuguese waters. Prior to the sinking and while the crew was still in Portugal, Portuguese authorities confiscated the passports of Watson, Pacheco and a few others to prevent them from leaving the country, pending possible prosecution.
To avoid capture by the Portuguese Border Patrol and under the cover of night, Pacheco swam across the border into Spain, hitchhiked to Madrid and spent three days in an airport waiting for a passport and a ticket to London,
where he then worked with Ronnie Lee, founder of the underground Animal Liberation Front. Pacheco was later named Sea Shepherd’s Crew Member of the Year.
While in England, Pacheco also worked with the British Hunt Saboteurs Association, disrupting hunts and physically clashing with up to 40 hunters at a time, who hunted from horseback and used whips to strike the saboteurs; some saboteurs were scarred for life with whip scars across their entire face. When Pacheco’s visa expired, he returned to the U.S. and moved to Washington, D.C. to become a lobbyist for animals, where he also organized the first animal rights civil disobedience training sessions in the U.S. In 1980 he co-founded PETA and for 20 years served as Chairman of the Board, specializing in undercover investigations, litigation and lobbying, before leaving in 2000.
The campaign also led to the American Medical Association commissioning a study by Harvard University on
how to defeat the animal rights movement. The study described Pacheco as “a national folk hero to the animal rights movement.” In 1989, a secret Animal Research Action Plan by the American Medical Association called for divide-and-conquer tactics to counter PETA and other animal groups. After the plan was leaked, the AMA publicly acknowledged their plan and boasted about budgeting $21 million to carry it out. The Silver Spring Monkey campaign fueled an unprecedented amount of activism and a flood of national media, with activities
ranging from illegal break-ins into animal laboratories, to peaceful protests and civil disobedience which continued to rise for almost two decades. In the process, Pacheco was arrested over 60 times. Spearheaded by Pacheco, the campaign produced numerous precedents, including: The first and only laboratory animal case
to reach the U.S. Supreme Court. The first and only arrest of an animal experimenter for cruelty to animals. The first and only criminal prosecution and conviction of an animal experimenter on charges of cruelty. The first termination of a federal research grant because of cruelty. The first and only confiscation of animals from a laboratory. Introduction of federal legislation, signed by over 100 members of Congress, to force the federal government to terminate funding for the laboratory and to release the Silver Spring Monkeys. In addition, fifty-five U.S. senators, ranging from Senator Jesse Helms and Senator Barry Goldwater to Senator Ted Kennedy, signed a joint statement calling on the government to terminate funding for the laboratory, end the experiments
and free the Silver Spring Monkeys. Pacheco was called to testify as the lead witness before Congressional Hearings by the U.S. House Subcommittee on Science, Research and Technology. He was called to testify as the star witness for the State of Maryland in the criminal trial and prosecution of animal experimenter Dr. Taub,
in State of Maryland vs. Dr. Edward Taub. The campaign paved the way for passage of federal animal protection legislation – the 1985 Amendments to the Federal Animal Welfare Act. In 1991 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the Silver Spring Monkeys, and in defiance of Congress the NIH immediately killed half of the surviving monkeys and the conflict continued.
Apart from the Silver Spring Monkey case, while Chairman of PETA, some of Pacheco’s most significant accomplishments came from the wide range of roles he played in helping convince many of the world’s largest corporations to dramatically improve their policies concerning animals. From leading a high-profile three-year successful campaign against the world’s largest corporation at the time, General Motors -- in which Pacheco destroyed his own GM car by setting it afire in public during a press conference in downtown D.C. -- to his undercover work in the Texas oïl Fields owned by Exxon, his track record of victories for animals is remarkable.
