Captain Swan Event

Hello, CS crew!! I come today with an event idea that has been tossed around in the discord server I run. (originally used for a different event >> CSMM) Okay, the new event  (Captain Swan Co-Storytellers Collaboration) would consist of groups of 3-4 people working together to write a captain swan story.  This is not a one person writes one part and passes on the document and so on until it reaches its end. No, this would be the ultimate team effort in an ensemble of amazing writers! Of course there are details to be ironed out but I wanted to know if anyone here was interested to join. I will share the form to get an idea of who is interested and for a way to contact anyone that wants to join in on the fun. As soon as I can I will reach out to you.

The soft morning light from his office window dances against her hair, tenderly casting her profile in a warm glow, as the rays finally settle on her hand.

Correction, his haunted mind unhelpfully supplies. Her ringed hand.

When asked about his biggest regret by prying colleagues at happy hour, usually trying to fish sex-stories-gone-wrong from him, Killian always says Tink. An affair with a perky paralegal inadvertently resulting in his firing makes for a convincing tale of failure.

Yet no amount of work-related downfalls, as savage as they may be, can compare to the real thing. In a surprising turn of events, his biggest regret is a captivating mix of nerves and fearlessness.

“Killian, stop! I’m going. It’s my decision and it’s final.” 

Emma is shivering under her worn out red leather jacket. He doesn’t have a mind to appreciate the sight though, not with her casually mentioning she’s abandoning her career. Abandoning it before it even has a chance to start and following her prick of a boyfriend to Chicago right after graduation. 

She’s leaving.

“Love, deny it all you want, but you’re an open book to me. Neal’s forcing you to follow him in his ridiculous quest to be the Wolf of Wall Street. You love the law. You’ve had a taste of it here. I have seen your eyes sparkle when you’re facing me in mock trials. You’re passionate. You’re bloody brilliant!”

He paused his desperate, last-chance speech to look her in the eye. His voice caught in his throat. 

“Don’t abandon this, Swan.”

Don’t abandon me.

The next time he saw her was through a screen. She was standing tall, offering her support to people who didn’t deserve it. Robert Gold’s half-assed apology to his voters, essentially for having no soul and dignity,  captured everyone’s attention in the office.

Emma captured his.

She was behind her father-in-law, as beautiful as he’d often dreamed, even though no amount of makeup could hide the pair of shining, red-rimmed eyes.

“I knew you’d find me, Swan.”

“Shut up, Jones.” 

The roll of her eyes is another thing he missed about her.

“That’s Jones Esq to you, darling,” he supplies playfully, and fixes a smile on his face. 

She doesn’t need to know how fast his heart is beating. How the gold tresses framing her face, make his fingers itch to tuck a lock behind her ear or how the sight of her, after all these years, is an image that will be permanently stitched on his brain. 

But, she’s in his law firm after all. Which brings up the obvious question.

“What are you doing in my conference room? Not that I’m complaining to see an old friend,” the word friend bitter on his tongue as he forces it out, “but-”

“I’m here for the job, Jones.” 

He goes to protest but she cuts him off expertly, “not for the pleasure of your company.” 

Killian pouts and prays to an invisible god it affects her just a tad. 

“Let’s get this over with so we can go to the part where you hire me, and I get an office. With a view.”

She won’t get an office, of course. First-year associates get a legal pad and a box of pens with the firm’s initials. His initials among them.

He selfishly thinks of her tracing his name with her fingers while she works.

Killian Jones doesn’t hire people on the spot. So he makes a great show of listening to all her reasons why she will be a valuable asset to his team. As though he hadn’t made up his mind the moment he saw her sitting nervously on the chair, touching the stem of her wrist tattoo.

He doesn’t need to hear why he should give her the job. Every scandal in the world couldn’t tarnish the image he has of her from their earlier days in college. “You bested me, Swan,” was his graceful admit of defeat when the professor paired them opposing each other for the mock trial. He’d lost the case to her, but it hadn’t felt like a loss at all. 

He knows she has fought for everything she has in life -from the orphanage to Columbia Law School-, and this will be no different. Opposing counsel doesn’t stand a chance. Yet, he lets her speak, passionately and -dare he hope- a little flustered.

They avoid, masterfully, any heavy topics that could lead this reunion to rocky paths. They don’t talk about Gold or Neal but there is  a brief mention of Henry, where he enjoys Emma’s genuine smile. Her first one this morning.  

He tells himself he has all the time in the world now to learn her again. She’s here. 

As Emma stands to leave, never one for pleasantries despite the political chaos she lives in, he braces himself and stops her. The flicker of hope in his heart matches the one in her eyes.

“Emma,” he breathes. “You should know, not a day went by that I didn’t think of you.”

She pauses. Her hand settles the loose strand of hair he had itched to touch, as her diamond ring catches the light painfully.  

“Good.”

5. Which of your fics do you wish was more successful?

the blessing has gotten the least amount of hits this year, despite being the second longest of my 2020 got/asoiaf fics; I suppose it’s to be expected, character study fics seem to get less traction than fics that are ship focused, but it’s still a little disappointing. I just get very weepy about Theon Greyjoy and want everyone else to care too, aight?!

8. Which fic this year was most fun to write?

running down to the riptide is my first got/asoiaf modern AU, and it’s been so much fun to work on! When I started it I envisioned it being 2-3 chapters long, but I ended up getting so into the story and the worldbuilding that it’s looking like it’ll be about 10 chapters. Oops? Anyways, I think I’ve caught the modern AU bug because all my yule fics are modern AUs, so I guess I have this fic to thank for that!

3. Which of your fics was most different from what you usually write?

In general, I’d say I went the most out of my comfort zone with the fics I wrote for Chopped: Madness back in March (except Release, my Murphy/Harper fic, which was INCREDIBLY on brand). And of those, I’d say my Bellamy Alice in Wonderland AU, On the Ground and What Bellamy Found There, is the most just straight up weird.

The Taste of Hope and Hands That Burn get honorable mentions for having a lot more world-building than I’m used to.

(Funnily enough, 2020 was actually going to be my year of writing weird stuff lmao--instead it became ‘just write literally anything, anything at all, please.’)

8. Which fic this year was most fun to write?

Hmmm. Honestly, between my summer of writer’s block and the general time distortion of this year, it’s hard to feel like most of my writing was even done by me. It just feels soooo distant.

That said, I think The Wanheda Tape! I had such a short time to write it, because it was my second Chopped: Horror fic, so I just had to do it, and that allowed me to immerse myself in writing in a way that I enjoy but nevertheless have been finding really difficult recently. Plus, I know this is a question about process, but it helps that I liked the end product too.

Song that reminds me of them: None. Maddy isn't a character I LOVE so I don't think about her too often even if I do like her.

A headcanon about them: She thinks she loves Nate but really, she's just deep down afraid of what might happen if she does leave him for good.

She's an enjoyable character and I hope we get to see her get away from Nate in S2 and interact more with other characters.

6. What is the last thing you read that made you laugh?

The last thing I read that made me laugh out loud was a scene in @courtorderedcake last chapter of Roses, her CS retelling of the fairy tale Tam Lin. The fic is incredible, and she has destroyed me in this last chapter but Killian’s cluelessness when Emma is trying to tell him something REALLY important had me in TEARS I was laughing so hard!

Sorry to disappoint, but I don’t actually have one atm. I’ve only got two docs right now and they contain nothing but notes. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?

Don’t judge me but it was Sweet Valley (I never put the ‘High’ after it because I was more of an SVU than SVH fan)

I even had an Angelfire fansite that I coded myself by hand all the way from the <head> tag. This year is my 22nd year in fandom and it kind of blows my mind that I was lucky enough to have the internet all those years ago because it literally changed my life.

10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

I tend to dip in and out of some fandoms without writing in them. The most recent examples over the past few years would be Veep and Leverage. Up until last week I would have also said The 100 but I finally broke the seal on that one.

44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?

That’s a really tough one because I’m a kind of bonkers multishipper who is constantly going oh what if those two boned?

I would like to see more Annie/Nancy in the Good Girls fandom, as well as more Beth/anyone other than Rio or Dean. I’m also constantly frustrated by the lack of Becho in The 100 fandom, so much of what’s in the tag is either anti-Echo/Becho or they’re very much a side ship in the background rather than the focus.

MCU wise as much as Steve/Maria has a decent amount of works, I have struggled to find a really smash it out of the park long fic, it’s mostly one shots and vignettes which is a bit disappointing (and I’ll admit I’m guilty of adding to that problem haha). Also Tony/Pepper/Rhodey.

“Is this what you saw, the first time you died?” Bellamy asks. He looks kind of pale, but that might just be the light refracting against the visor of his radiation suit.

“Yeah,” Clarke says, as casually as she can manage. It’s a lie. It looked a lot worse from the radio dish platform, because it was closer and more terrifying and she’d just watched her closest friends explode in the sky. But it seems kinder not to say all that. At least Bellamy will deteriorate faster than her, if this Nightblood stuff works. She doesn’t want to die first and leave him alone. She’s been the one who lives longest and it wasn’t worth it.

Twenty years ago, when the clocks changed from 11:59pm on December 31st, 1999, to 12:00am on January 1st, 2000, the world ended, exactly as the doomsdayers had predicted. Now, there are only a few livable months left on Earth, and the privileged are evacuating for a life in space, abandoning the planet.

But not everyone has given up.

Clarke was only three when the world ended, and she’s spent most of her life in her mother’s lab. Now, as the last space ships are preparing to leave, her mother’s machine is finally ready, and Clarke and her mother are heading back in time to try to stop the apocalypse from happening in the first place.

An attack on the lab leads to Clarke heading back to 1995 on her own, and the past isn’t quite how Clarke’s vague memories from the beginning of her life paint it. Clarke soon discovers that not only did the machine do more than just send her back in time, but she wasn’t, in fact, sent back alone.

Will she be able to stop the apocalypse before the clock strikes midnight? Or are some parts of history unchangeable?
