Princeton scientist Albert Einstein rented a house on the North Fork for the summer of 1939. It was a small beach shack on Nassau Point in Southold where, at the age of 60, he felt he could enjoy the salt sea air, sailing his 15-foot sailboat on the gentle waters of Peconic Bay—he’d brought it with him—and the peace and quiet of a rural community. With him came his secretary to keep his schedules and cook his meals, and for much of the time his married daughter Lieserl, who visited him and did his shopping for him. Einstein worked at least part of every day advancing his theories at a blackboard in the shack’s tiny living room.
While in Southold, Einstein befriended David Rothman, the owner of Rothman’s Department Store on Main Street in Southold. Einstein, a trained violinist, had learned that Rothman and several of his friends played Mozart and Beethoven in a classical string quartet at one or another’s homes in the evening twice a week. Einstein asked if he could join them and of course the answer was yes. Rothman, delighted to have a friendship with Einstein, kept a journal of their time together that summer.
In August, several prominent scientists, seeing that war was looming, drove out from New York to visit Einstein at his little beach house. They had written a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, warning him that the Germans were actively trying to build an atomic bomb. They felt America should have a lab to do that too and beat the Germans to the punch. But they also felt they needed the famous Albert Einstein to sign the letter so it would be read by the president. Einstein signed, and subsequently it was read by the president, and so the top secret lab in Oak Ridge, Tennessee was quickly built and opened. Five years later, the lab split the atom and got the bomb before the Germans could do so.

Song of the Day - I Am What I Am - Gloria Gaynor
Song of the Day – I Am What I Am – Gloria Gaynor
From my Facebook page just a few hours ago… Capping off our own little Christmas story… The students of Southold’s SAFER club put an exclamation point on this Christmas tree saga this afternoon by decorating a brand new tree at Southold’s Silversmith Park where we had the opportunity to meet some of the wonderful community members who’ve supported us in the days following the vandalism of our…

Long Island; Greenport NY; 7/28/88 by Steve Barry Via Flickr: Long Island Hashamomuck Pond, Greenport, New York July 28, 1988 Long Island Rail Road "power pack" 607 leads a westbound train across Hashamomuck Pond just outside Greenport. The red stripes on the coaches indicate these are parlor cars; this was an excursion for the National Railway Historical Society convention and was an all-parlor car train. The 607 was built as Western Maryland FA-1 303; the LIRR removed its traction motors so it provides only power for the coaches and serves as a cab car.
All red stripes makes this look like a weird Metro North scene.
These coaches and the converted locomotive were probably on their last paint job here.
They would all be retired a tad over a decade after this.

Caleb and Ben bought land!
I have found the source!
"Loyalism in New York during the American Revolution", found (where else) on Archive.org, a website I will be donating my entire first paycheck to when I find employment again for saving my ass at least a dozen times this year and that is not an exaggerated number. (https://archive.org/details/loyalisminnewyor00flic/page/252/mode/2up)
Page 251-252:
The entry notes that the Loyalist owner of the land, Richard Floyd, disposessed of his land by attainder, had his land sold to "Benj. Talmage and Caleb Brewster" for 730 pounds, covering The Middle of the Island Farm in Brookhaven township, 4 1/3 lors, about 320 acres, "reserving to William Floyd, Esq., and to his heirs and assigns one lot and one-half lot of the above described lands claimed by him as his property." The land was bordered in the north by William Clark, east by William Smith, south by John Homan, and west by the Connecticut River.
Parker Wickham, also under attainder, had his land sold for 1250 pounds to Ben and Caleb. It was a "tract in Southold township known as Robin's Island, about 350 acres. No definite boundary given."
(5K, domesticity, bittersweet ending, but hey that's just where my mind goes.)
There's more, though. With some... familiar names.
We've got a listing for a Joseph Brewster of Brook Haven Township, buying land bordered by a Benjamin Floyd. I cannot for the life of me find a Joseph in Caleb's known family tree but maybe I'm using incomplete information.
(EDIT: FOUND HIM! And you'll never guess where. You know Abraham Woodhull, the Abraham Woodhull, well he had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married an Isaac Brewster, who is the son of a Joseph Brewster from Setauket. If this is the same Joseph, he's Abe's daughter's in-laws. They're parent-in-laws. What the-- Oh, and is this Joseph a direct relation to Caleb Brewster? I honestly don't know, WikiTree is so unhelpful in mapping out these families.)
Benjamin Floyd himself is buying land that's bordered in the east by a Nathaniel Woodhull -- land that was Richard Floyd's, taken by attainder. Is this Woodhull a relation to Abe? No idea. Is Benjamin Floyd a relation to Richard Floyd? Could a family member buy land that had been taken by attainder?
And then we've got Caleb Brewster himself throwing in lots, literally, with the same Benjamin Floyd, buying four lots in Nocamock.
(Benjamin Tallmadge, you may remember, married a Mary Floyd, though I can't find evidence of a Benjamin in her family).
Ooooh I wanna know, I wanna know so bad. What was going on here? How did they all know each other? And did they?

RACE ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
SOUTHOLD, NY
It seems that ghosts like to hang out in lighthouses. The violent deaths from these disasters could leave behind a spiritual residue or life force that lingers where it happened.
According to Native American lore, Race Rock Reef was once an island. Because of the swift currents running up to six knots in the Race and the sharp rocks that could tear out the bottom of their birch bark canoes the Indians avoided it. They believed the place was haunted and as sea levels have risen the island has disappeared beneath the waves.
Many members of the Coast Guard have claimed to hear disembodied whispers, laughing, voices and even yelling. Some have been touched, poked, or pushed by these phantoms and refuse to return to this property. Unexplainable footsteps and the sounds of running water have also been experienced. Many passing boats claimed they have witnessed a shadowy presence of a man in the tower as the light passed over them.

A Different Kind of Christmas Story on the North Fork
A Different Kind of Christmas Story on the North Fork
It all started with an email from my friend and colleague Marlene, who oversees a program to decorate Christmas trees along Main Street in Southold, NY, every Christmas, the town where I teach. Every year, the elementary kids decorate the trees throughout the main thoroughfare of Southold, but this year there were a few left over. Marlene was sending out a query to club advisors to see if we…
