Mujer o Bruja This was special! I’m so grateful for the opportunity and good fortune to have been witness to, and participant in a small way in, this gem of performance and storytelling. “¿Mujer o Bruja? (Woman or Witch?),” Tiptons Sax Quartet/Correo Aereo/Jing ‘Jude’ Dai Inspirational performances this weekend leave me cautiously hopeful, a reserved optimism that speaks to the world we have come from, where we are, and the plethora of possibilities before us. Truly an expansive reflection on our history as a species and the epochs of change we have journeyed through; the thesis?? Our continual reinvention provides the pathway to healing. The collective creative ritual made manifest by the Tiptons , Correo Aereo and Jing ‘Jude’ Dai’s visual treatment takes a breathtaking look at our potential collective transmutation. And as one attendee expressed to me after the show, “this belongs Off Broadway!” A few more shots from load in, soundcheck… @tiptonssaxquartet #tiptonssaxquartet #seattlemusic #earshotjazz #nonsequitur #southarts #4Culture #chapelperformancespace (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVbpZhZpWlS/?utm_medium=tumblr

REVIEW
The Good, The Bad, and The Duke by Janna MacGregor
The Cavensham Heiresses #4
When Lady Daphne Hayworth was nine an encounter with Paul Barstowe, her brother’s best friend, made a lasting impression. Years later they are given the opportunity to spend time together during the holidays and what transpires changes both of their lives forever. It takes them a bit of time to get to their happily ever after but with each page read I felt the story building and growing in a way that had me hoping all would work out for both of them in the end.
This story is well plotted and written with both Daphne and Paul people I admired and could relate to. I loved their story and can’t wait to read what comes next. I am unsure who gets their story told next BUT would love to see the vicar appear in a book of his own someday as he is a man that intrigues me.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

A lady with a noble mission. A duke looking for redemption. A forbidden love that cannot be denied… Lady Daphne Hallworth is ready to celebrate the holidays with her family. But when they accidentally leave her home alone, Daphne uses the time to work on her dream—opening a home for unwed mothers. But her quest isn’t problem-free: She’s in a battle to win the property for the home against her brother’s best friend-turned-enemy, Paul Barstowe, Duke of Southart. And that’s not all: someone has stolen her personal diary, which holds secrets that could devastate her family. Daphne has always harbored private feelings for the man her family scorns…though perhaps striking a bargain with the handsome Duke will solve both their problems? Paul, long considered good for nothing, aims to open a hospital to honor his brother and restore his reputation. So when a conflict over the land brings him straight into Daphne’s life, they make a deal: He will help her find her diary if Daphne can change her family’s opinion of him. But before he can win her family’s affection, he has to win hers first. Maybe love was the answer to their family feud all along?

Hold Nothing Back
Children hold nothing back—living somewhat feral days. There are heights of wonder, depths of terror.
They are fully themselves, but what if I slowly discovered I am not who I thought I would be as a woman, as a mother? Everyday mishaps feel jarring. Noise threatens to unglue. Baking rarely occurs. I am terrified of being used up, of losing myself, of not actually knowing what coherent adult thoughts feel or sound like anymore. Capturing the collision between childishness and adult expectations illuminates a dim path through the Sisyphean mess. Perspective charges the horizon: maybe not in that exact second, maybe a year later. These are deeply personal days, rooted in this particular place, this season; yet, these are also common-to-us-all moments of tension and joy.

Review: Wild, Wild Rake
Wild, Wild Rake, by Janna MacGregor, is available at booksellers on 2-25-20. Wild is part of Ms MacGregor's The Cavensham Heiresses series, but I found it to work well as a stand-alone story. It was nice at the end to catch up on the members of the other books, especially my favorite, The Duke of Southart. Oh my, Paul is delicious *grrrr*. This small insight into other characters will whet your appetite for the previous books in the series. Go for it. I've been waiting for this book, the hero was a delight in the previous stories & I wanted more. Devon Ferris is now my all-time favorite good guy historical hero. He's such a nice person you can't help but love him. He cultivated a rakish reputation as it protected him from letting others into his business. Now he is a flirt, he's witty and fun. These traits made it easy for people to pigeonhole him, if he spoke with a woman the papers said it was an affair. He's refreshing after my steady diet of bad boys. It's also nice to have a God fearing man who's not dull or pious. I'd love to be the lady he turned eyes too. That happens to be Avalon, Marchioness of Warwyk. Avalon is a widow from a super bad arranged marriage. She's a great strong female character. I like that she took charge of her life & made it work. She's lovely. I can't, and won't, tell you too much about the plot, it's a terrific read and I want you to enjoy it for yourself. I was invested in the characters and their HEA. I do hope that Ms MacGregor will follow up with at least a novella about Sophia and Marcus. You'll understand what I mean by the end. Happy reading. I voluntarily read and reviewed and advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #Netgalley #JannaMacGregor #Wild,WildRake #CavenshamHeiresses #Historicalromance #StMartin'sPaperbacks

The Good, the Bad and the Duke by Janna MacGregor
The Good, the Bad and the Duke by Janna MacGregor was one of those romances that really tugged at my heart strings. I have been enjoying The Cavensham Heiress series. This is the fourth book of the series and I know it is not the last. According to Goodreads, there is another book going to be published in June next year.
Lady Daphne Hollworth has been unexpectedly left behind, so she decides to take matters into her own hands and use the time to plan her future. Paul Barstowe, Duke of Southart finds that she is alone and does his best to help her. Little does Paul know that she has loved him all her life. Little does Daphne know that Paul has always cared for her. Together, they work to help Daphne recover a missing item and maybe - just maybe - recover from their own wounds and find each other.
I think the book really hit me because of how sad the characters are. They love each other truly, but do not want to hurt the other. I love the Cavernsham family with the various family members. I love their loyalty and obvious regard for each other. The Good, the Bad and the Duke by Janna MacGregor was a lovely read.

In love with creativity
By Ashley Rhinehart, Arts Administration student
Nick Covault graduated from UK in 2009 with degrees in Vocal Music Performance and Arts Administration. He is currently the Director of The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA), a partnership between the Commonwealth and The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. GSA mobilizes Kentucky’s next generation of creative leaders through an intensive residential summer program for high-school artists, as well as other initiatives throughout the year that cultivate networks, communities, and resources for artistically inclined youth (Nick is also an alumnus of the GSA program, attending in 2002 for Vocal Music).
Previously serving as Programming & Community Engagement Manager for The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, Nick’s accolades have included participation in SouthArts’ groundbreaking Dance Touring Initiative, the Emerging Leader Institute of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters, the Global Fellowship Program of the International Society for the Performing Arts, and presenting on artist residency models at SouthArt’s Performing Arts Exchange. He was listed as one of Business First of Louisville’s 2016 Forty Under 40 Honorees, and has been named a Compassion Laureate by Compassionate Louisville.
What’s your favorite item you have in your office?
Definitely my Dolly Parton rubix cube made by Appalachian artist Gina Mamone. I won it in a raffle at “It’s Good to be Young in the Mountains,” a youth-led conference about Appalachian identity. It’s right next to a framed photo of me when I was an intern at GSA during my time at UK – that photo is definitely my second favorite item!
What is your favorite memory at UK?
It’s so hard to pick just one! I really cherish the reoccurring memory of walking around campus on a beautiful day and running into and chatting with friends. UK can seem like such a big place, but especially around the Fine Arts building, the world seemed beautifully small sometimes.
How did your experiences at UK help you find your first move after graduation?
The UK Arts Administration program made sure I was fostering connections and relationships while I was growing as a student. Ultimately, it was those advocates who I met through internships, etc., who helped me take my first pivotal steps after college.
What qualities do you look for in hiring a new graduate?/What are some attributes of people who are most successful in your field?
People who are curious, open, flexible, and in love with the creative process. Even though arts administration is definitely a unique field with specific attributes, it is still a vast industry with room for people with diverse interests, expertise, and personalities. There’s no one right way to be an arts administrator, but from my perspective you must be in love with creativity and open to all that can come from it (not coincidentally, I think these are important characteristics for artists as well).
What advice can you offer someone entering the Arts Administration program?
Remain open to possibilities. Put people first. Be an advocate not just for the arts, but for artists. As you go on through school and after college, strive to always know why you are doing what you do – what you love about it and/or how it’s making you grow. When hiring someone, I’m interested in knowing what they’ve done, but I’m MUCH more interested in knowing why they did it. Also, don’t stress too much about life after graduation. You do not have to walk off the graduation stage and into the office of some really important arts organization. Create a journey that is right for you.
Editor’s note: We first interviewed Nick at the Kentucky Center in 2015, along with several of his colleagues and fellow CFA alumni. Look for a future post with a throwback to that wonderful conversation.

BUY THE BOOK: Click on the link below The Good, the Bad, and the Duke Review: (Book provided by St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley) I’ve read the first three books of the Cavensham series and I’ve absolutely adored this book. When I started this book and read it was THEE Paul, bad boy Paul that broke his last engagement without a care in the world. I had a difficult time remembering his past actions because I couldn’t help but, see Paul Barstowe, the Duke of Southart as a kind, caring, and loving man. His relationship with his late father was absolutely heart wrenching. I’m not one to put blame on anyone for their present actions but, it really made sense as to why Paul turned out to be the man he once was. To feel unloved and little, the only way to react is to shame his Father. By doing so he lost more than he bargained for. Until he saw Daphne again. Daphne was always fond of Paul. Even though Paul completely ruined his friendship with her older brother. In doing so her brother forbid Daphne to be near Paul. Daphne was described as a “good” girl with her own mind and heart. And her brother wouldn’t stand in the way of her dreams. I’ve always adored MacGregor’s novels. Especially how the heroine focuses on her dreams and the hero supports his heroine instead of causing her to give up her dreams for him. This is such a lovely historical romance. The characters were absolutely dashing and the story captured my attention and didn’t let it go. I literally held this book to me after it ended. It’s as if my heart broke a little that it ended. Rate: 5/5 My Reaction:
