i felt so tired/stressed this past week, from work, PMS, and secondhand stress from matt - he had 3 interviews back to back (tues-thurs) and i basically listened in on everything (also my fault, i like to be nosy lol). another hospital in redlands will be flying him out for an in-person interview mid-september. because we already had a double date planned with S&I, and G will actually be in town for a couple days for work, we decided that i won't tag along this time and matt will only go for 3 days. i've literally lost count of how many flights to CA he'll have for the rest of this year.

since last wednesday, i was internally freaking out about having slacked off so much at work in the VCP aspect, that i went hardcore at getting the tasks done. we just had the last academic affairs meeting in which i'll be in my current role today. dr. m touched on my leave at the beginning of the meeting, and joked saying "i'm quitting" in response, which was cute. but i was like, i hope you mean it and you're not complaining about me behind the scenes lol.

after the blood, sweat and tears from this one week of "hardcore" work, i felt content that i had a clear presentation with where we are with everything. honestly, i'm not sure what is better. when i'm really busy, it's stressful, but i feel like i'm contributing and making a difference. on the other hand, now the pendulum has swung back to being on the boredom side. anyhow, i'm excited for my new role and to learn new things!

recently, i've also been experiencing health anxiety. i accidentally missed my radiology appointment when i was in town earlier this month. i was NOT looking forward to doing a transvaginal ultrasound and was slightly relieved when i missed my appointment, but now that i've been having these weird aches/tension, i wish i didn't miss my appointment. i'll need to wait until i'm back in town late sept/early oct to get a checkup for peace of mind.

this weekend, matt and i did a last minute trip to the hamptons and montauk. we used our chase points to get a hyatt hotel at riverhead, and my capital one travel credit to get a rental car from manhattan. i decided i wanted to go this weekend because it would be the only time we could go while the weather is still warm. we got to visit four farms/farmstands, go to cooper's beach twice (one of the prettiest beaches i've been to), see how some people live in the hamptons, and eat a yummy beachside lunch at hooked.

being in southhampton/cooper's beach, the scenery was so pretty i was able to forget about life's stresses for a while. i think long island/driving towards montauk is completely underrated. i would say southampton/cooper's beach is now one of my fav places of the east coast. the trip was quite nice, but very tiring because of all the driving. i also couldn't sleep much the first night in the hotel because i had drank too strong of a milk tea earlier that day lol. pms + sleep deprived + stressed from work + being under the sun in the car too long = grouchy me.

R&TL are moving to NYC this week! TL is already here securing an apartment, and R will be flying over this saturday. we're planning on hanging out with TL for a bit this thursday for dinner, and i may go see them over labor day at their new place

went to my first cuculi event last weekend with T - bbq at governors island. i met a new chinese friend J, who moved from boston and spoke to me a lot in chinese. also, there was a black guy M who made me feel really uncomfortable. i was chitchatting with people and i think he misinterpreted my friendliness as interest. he ended up leaving the event the same time as me, T&J, which meant i had to take the subway back with him as we were both going towards brooklyn. he asked me 3x about plans to hang out even though i didn't show interest after the first time. ugh.

we have a trip planned to boston next week! i wanted to visit K in her element before leaving the east coast. obviously, i'm trying to pack everything in before winter comes lol. i've only met her once before for a couple hours when she visited nyc, but we've been chatting online for like 3 years now. it'll be matt's first time meeting her. i foresee that this trip will be tiring as well due to the driving but hopefully chill in terms of activities. we'll be doing 2 nights in boston and 2 nights at the getaway machimoodus :)

i got my bridesmaids dress altered (who knew this would be so expensive), and have a wedding guest outfit for the remaining two weddings this year

matt and i joined a running group last wednesday, south brooklyn running club. it was really nice, even though my knees were destroyed the day after lol. the roundtrip walk to the meeting point in carroll gardens was 2 miles, and we ran about 4.5 miles on top of that. the award for the slowest runner goes to.... me! a nice white lady kat helped keep me accountable. i would have given up after mile one if she didn't continue subtly peer pressuring me to run haha. although it was fun, i'm not sure if i'd return because most people who go are really fit and can easily run 9 min (multiple) miles, and have done or are training for a marathon. however, i'm glad to check "running club" off the bucket list.

Hello!  I’m shipping off in just over two weeks, and I wanted a place to update friends and family on what exactly ship life is like.  I have virtually no idea what to expect, although I’ve done a lot of researching and talking to friends about what their experiences are like, but I don’t suppose I’ll really know until I’m in the middle of it all.  I know I’ll have limited internet access over the next few months, so I wanted a place where I can write down what’s been going on while I’m offline, and where I can upload things when I’m in an internet cafe somewhere for whoever’s interested in how things are going.  So welcome to that place! 

For a quick rundown: I’m starting with Royal Caribbean on September 26th (I fly out on the 24th) as a Rigging Assistant on the Independence of the Seas for my 29 week contract- so about 6.5 months. I’ll be on board for every major holiday this year haha.

Since the September rigging training course was full by the time I got all my documentation and everything in, I’m technically starting off with Technical Stage Staff duties (i.e. running the theatrical productions backstage), and should hopefully be pulled back off the ship around January to do the rigging course. Then I’d return for the last half of my contract doing actual rigging things.  We’ll see how that shakes out.

As of right now, I’m trying to do whatever I can think of to prep, like stockpiling some media since I won’t have internet to speak of, making a packing list, looking into the weather and things to do at the ports I’ll be visiting, asking friends about the dos and don’ts of what to bring with you, and making sure I have all the paperwork/courses/requirements done for my upcoming stint as a sailor lol.  My first month I’ll be in Spain for the most part, with my home port in Southampton, England, and there will be a couple other offshoots to Portugal and France thrown in there too.  After that first month, we swing over (on a 14 day transatlantic cruise that will have 9 straight days at sea- can’t say I’ve ever had that experience before) to the Caribbean for the remainder of my contract. Never having been on any cruises before this, it should be quite the learning experience.

All in all I’m thrilled to be dodging winter in the Caribbean this year, and so excited to have a chance to see some of Europe on the front end of this thing.  Very grateful to be learning yet another different side of the entertainment industry, and scratching the travel itch (on RC’s dime) while I’m at it.  I’m intending for this to be the last big blowout for my vagabonding days post-undergrad, but I guess we’ll have to see how that shakes out too. I will say, moving every year, or less, is getting a biiiiit stale.

What I’m expecting from all this is to meet a ton of people on board from all over the world, to get the chance to see different countries, to learn a new thing or two (or twenty) about how these kinds of productions are run, and to find a bit more independence myself by jumping into this entirely foreign environment on my own and with no one I know waiting for me on board.  It’s daunting for sure, but I think it will be a really worthwhile experience and I’m absolutely as excited as I am nervous. And no, the serendipity of the ship’s name is not lost on me haha.

This week, my laptop died. You know what it’s like; damn near ruined my week! Shit happens! It happens to us all. Nothing is built to last anymore. They don’t want to build anything that lasts. It’s not even a case of anything breaking down. Tech firms keep sending you ‘updates’, which they probably think will be very exciting to the consumer, but all they do is bring your sweet old machine to a screeching halt! That last Windows update has KILLED my machine, stone dead! What were you updating, guys? It certainly wasn’t my ability to work! Thanks a bunch!

Every single day. Is this progress? People no longer need to spend time in recording studios, they can record ‘music’ at home on DAWs (digital audio workstations). This means that anybody with electricity in their home can now describe themselves as a ‘producer’. Is this progress? YouTube stars are now making music and appearing on stage at The Brits (allegedly the best of the best we have to offer.) Is this progress? People have found of way of making products that initially work beautifully but, after a pre-ordained period of time, begin to stop working, meaning we have no option but to replace them. Is that progress or are we being sold a lie? Nothing’s built to last, eh? Well, maybe one thing? Friendships can be built to last. Though you can’t really call it a friendship if it’s not built to last. I’ll be there for you. Really?

The Changing of Years

We all know that I suck in updating this blog, right? Right? Because we are writing the year 2021, I am done with my years in Southampton, have returned to Goslar, am figuring out how to Germanize my life and am currently watching Grandma and ‘Wer Weiss denn sowas’ and even though this is boring as hell – I imagine it to be very productive in writing these entries.

So, let’s settle into our time machine, put that seatbelt to good use and go back to winter 2019.

In December 2019, I skipped out of Christmas with my family in Goslar and instead flew to Oklahoma. My first Christmas in the USA – and I had high hopes. I expected a hallmark movie. I expected sparkles everywhere, life-sized elves, candy canes and I was not disappointed.

The house of my family-in-law already gave me all the sparkles and decorations. It also gave me candy canes. Gone were the little wooden angels and candles in my mum’s windows, gone was the Christmas tree that is more green then coloured and all of it was replaced with AMERICA.

I think of all the things we did in Oklahoma that Christmas Period – this was my favourite memory. Apparently the entire Huggins Family comes together at Nanas to decorate the big tree in the garden. And because it is not really cold – it is a little weird that so, so good. It was a true holiday feeling. Also there are pictures and family photos of me now where I got put next to Nana. So I cannot be broken up with anymore. I am caught now. Unless they wanna have a random white girl next to Nana for all eternity.

Of course, no visit to Oklahoma is completed without the visit to Seth and Megan – with Megan we went to Muskogee’s Light show, with Seth we made gingerbread houses.

We saw Megan and her now (?) fiancé Tyler at the Muskogee Christmas Light Show. They were really cute together. But of course, their love cannot compete with two people who literally spend most of their relationship virtually. Because when Chris and I see each other after moths apart we are that couple. The annoying one, that cannot keep their hands of each other. We even sit next to each other in the restaurant. Ooops, hehe.

We visited Seth and Alexis in their new house, chatted, looked at the new dogs (so many dogs!), and made the gingerbread houses.

What ever happened to our house, I wonder? I definitely did not eat it. I also have not seen Chris eat it. Probably the bin happened.

Seth and Alexis are the couple where I am always reminded how different people in my life can live. With houses, dogs, picket fence and now even a toddler. I am always reminded how I am an eternal student, and am reminded of my own old soul – seeing how I am older, but my life feels younger.

I travelled back to Germany on the 26th, and on the 28thwe re-celebrated Christmas with Grandma. Initially, when I told my mum that I was gonna spend Christmas with the Hugginses, she was not on board. This has happened before, back when I had to spend Christmas with Motel One. I am always a little taken aback, because there are little things my parents have an opinion about, and I never picked my mum to really care about Christmas. She keeps reminding me that Chris is due to celebrate Christmas with us. She’s very adamant about it.

New Year’s we spent in Juist and even took part in the New Year’s Day Run – the first time I saw my dad partake in a run in years. We ran on the Deich around cones in circles. My parents were really cute, running together, while I abandoned them and ran faster. Everytime I ran part them though, we high fived.

The weather was really good, warm enough, sunny and the view we had one the New Years Eve was really nice.

I am not a fan of fireworks, they are too loud, too scary. I like fire work shows, where I see the lights from far away. Nowadays, I am very aware of my old soul and I like being that grandma that stays inside for fireworks. I just get too scared.

Kane Williamson hit an unbeaten half-century as his side sealed an eight-wicket win over India in the World Test Championship Final New Zealand have become Test cricket's inaugural world champions after Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor steered them to an eight-wicket victory over India on a gripping sixth and final day at The Hampshire Bowl. The Kiwis were set 139 to win from 53 overs after rolling India for 170 and reached their target in 45.5 overs despite a few scares as a weather-affected game - days one and four were entirely washed out - ended in the Southampton sunshine.Ravichandran Ashwin reduced the Black Caps to 44-2 in the chase after dismissing openers Tom Latham (9) and Devon Conway (19) before skipper Williamson (52no) and Taylor (47no) shared an unbroken match-winning partnership of 96, with Williamson overturning an lbw dismissal off Ashwin on one and Taylor dropped by Cheteshwar Pujara at slip on 26. Williamson - who was also dropped late on by Jasprit Bumrah while on 45 - reached fifty from 86 balls before Taylor smoked the winning four as New Zealand scooped the World Test Championship title and the £1.2m winner's cheque, getting on for two years since their heart-breaking defeat to England in the 50-over World Cup final at Lord's.

New Zealand seamer Kyle Jamieson recorded magnificent match figures of 7-61 from 46 overs Tim Southee (4-49), Trent Boult (3-39) and Kyle Jamieson (2-30) had earlier ripped through India, although at one stage it seemed New Zealand may be left ruing Southee dropping Rishabh Pant (41) on five when Virat Kohli's men were 82-4 and leading by just 50 runs.Pant was eventually seventh man out amid India losing their final five wickets for 28 runs, with Boult and Southee each striking twice in an over.Jamieson had made two crucial early blows after India resumed on 64-2 with a lead of 32, having Virat Kohli (13) and Pujara (15) caught behind during a magnificent spell of 2-6 from seven overs. Jamieson has now taken 46 wickets in eight Tests for New Zealand - it would have been 47 had Southee not shelled Pant in the cordon - and ended the final with stunning match figures of 7-61 from 46 overs.Kohli would have hoped to play a major role with the bat on the deciding day but added just five runs to his overnight tally of eight before snicking Jamieson's rising ball outside off stump through to Back Caps wicketkeeper BJ Watling - Jamieson removing Kohli for the second time in the game.Pujara then clipped a ball he tried to leave through to Taylor at slip as India slipped to 72-4 - and Jamieson would have struck again 10 runs later had Southee not spurned a regulation chance to oust Pant.

BJ Watling dislocated his finger on the last day of the World Test Championship Final - his final game for New Zealand Watling carried on keeping and showed no ill-effects of his injury when he caught Jadeja post lunch, after Wagner forced the left-hander to play a fuller delivery that angled across him following a series of short balls.Jadeja's dismissal triggered an India slump from 142-5, with Pant's exit - the 23-year-old caught superbly on the run by Henry Nicholls after skying Boult into the off-side - a hammer blow to India's chances.Ashwin (16) drove Boult to slip two balls after Pant departed, while Southee then had Mohammed Shami (13 off 9) caught at fly sip and Bumrah (0) pouched at regulation slip in the 73rd and final over of the innings.
