Tips for Hanging Outdoor Lights this Holiday Season

Are you prepared to make your home sweet home merry and illuminated this Yuletide season? When December strikes, you might be energized to become a couch potato and share your favorite holiday quotes and sayings far and near, but you might also be alarmed that the most physically challenging part of the season is hanging the lights. The good fact is that looking at decorative lights is impressive; however, learning how to hang these lights is a pain in the neck.

Outdoor lighting is the most distinct and splendid concept available for the holidays. You need to know the basic tips of hanging holiday lights. Holiday lighting arrangements are spectacular when setting the mood for the Yuletide season, but they can also put your home in danger if you’re not aware of how you layout your illuminating displays. While you’re classifying your decors for this holiday season, bear these safety tips in mind when stringing your outdoor lights so you can enjoy and celebrate the season in style:

Tip No. 1: Use the proper GFCI outlet.

Safety comes first. Your source of power must be coming from a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. This kind of outlet will shut the circuit down if there is an overcurrent. If you failed to have a GFCI outlet, a registered and qualified electrician can permanently install one outdoors for holiday seasons to come.

Tip No. 2: Test and check your lights before you hang them.

Connect multiple cords and provide them a shake to see if they produce an unsteady light. It’s always a better idea to plug in your lights before you hang them to look for poor bulbs. Damaged light sets should be removed or repaired.

Tip No. 3: Enlist at least one helper.

Enlisting at least one helper can help to stabilize your ladder and hand your supplies. If you’re uneasy on a ladder, or if you have a particularly large or high roof, hire a pro to hang your lights.

Tip No. 4: Always choose waterproof lights and good quality light sets.

Just because they were inexpensive doesn’t mean they are a better deal. There is a variety of lights to select from. Frequently use waterproof or water-resistant lights with a tag marked Underwriters Lab (UL). Likewise, when you're buying Christmas lights to use outdoors, make sure they are rated for outdoor use. Never use indoor Christmas lights outdoors.

Tip No. 5: Using miniature bulbs, and C7 or C9 bulbs.

Another choice for outdoor lighting is the miniature, which costs a little and consumes less power than the classic outdoor light string. It can be used around the borderline of your home and trees. For a more typical holiday light, you use a C7 or C9 bulbs. These are the cone-shape lights you'll find most often in home improvement and convenience stores nationwide.

Tip No. 6: Be closely monitored about your tree’s water level.

Always let the container full so the needles don’t dry out. Incandescent bulbs can easily get a higher temperature and may occur as a fire risk, but LED lights are cool to the touch, so they’re a safer choice for your tree.

Tip No. 7: Turn Christmas lights off whenever away.

Lastly, once you’ve scrutinized your light strands and hung them safely outdoors, keep on remembering one final Christmas light safety tip…turn the lights off, when you depart your area or go to bed at night, for forgetting to do so might lead to a major disaster.

Hair Rituel by Sisley Review

Earlier this year Sisley-Paris launched a luxurious hair care line called Hair Rituel by Sisley designed to nourish the hair and scalp. I fell in love with every single item and have a review of everything launched to date. At this time they have seven pieces in their four step treatment routine:

Since moving to Florida I’ve found it challenging to maintain healthy and hydrated hair. Many of my Florida readers experience the same issues with heat, humidity and hard water. Even with a water filter many shampoos don’t lather or rinse quite the same. The Hair Rituel by Sisley has been among the few that I’ve kept using and like so much I’ve repurchased after using up press samples.

To cleanse the hair I really like the Revitalizing Smoothing Shampoo. I’ve gone through multiple bottles and think it is 100% worth the high price tag. It does help smooth the hair without making it feel heavy. It contains macadamia oil which has helped strengthen, nourish and add shine. It has a beautiful gentle scent to it and lathers/foams well. I shampoo daily.

The Restructuring Conditioner is a great gentle daily use kind of rinse out conditioner, although this is a step I don’t use daily. It’s like an instant shot of hydration for the hair and truly helps with detangling. I’ve never had issues with tangling until I moved to Florida. It helps smooth out the ends with a lightweight finish so your hair is not weighed down.

The Regenerating Hair Mask is something I use 1-2x per week. This is one of the best hair masks I’ve tried to add shine but not weight. So many hydrating hair masks won’t rinse out properly or are simply too heavy/rich for humid weather. This one has just the right combination to nourish ends of hair and scalp. It has four main oils Shea, Macadamia, Camellia and Hazelnut.

For the scalp they have a really nice Revitalizing Fortifying Serum for the scalp. This is the first time I’ve used a scalp treatment at home and it does help soothe it. It has an earthy kind of scent, something I’d associate with Aesop’s skincare line. A little can go a long way and I use this 1x per week only at night or as needed. Since I’ve started using the other items I’ve had less scalp issues, but during the dry season here in Florida this helps immensely.

Last but not least are two styling products. The Precious Hair Care Oil is one of the most beautiful elegant hair oils I’ve tried. I think it is my favorite item in the collection and suitable for any hair type. This one is lightly hydrating to add shine and softness to the ends without being heavy. It’s great for me because it’s lightweight and in Florida humidity it won’t weigh it down.

The latest launch is the Volumizing Spray which adds a nice texture throughout the hair. I use it on damp hair, spray at roots and brush it through. I follow with a blow dryer. By the time hair is dried you will notice it has more volume but also some texture. Hair is noticeably thicker with a more piecey look.

In addition to the full size products they’ve also launched a travel set in two variations called the Hair Rituel Smoothing Discovery Set and Volumizing Set. Both of which are a great way to try the items out before splurging on the full sizes. They each contain shampoo (one has the smoothing, one has the volume option), conditioner and hair mask in 1.6 fl oz/50 ml sizes and a hair oil in .33 fl oz/10 ml.

Final thoughts are this line comes at a hefty price tag but everything performs really well. I’ve already repurchased the Smoothing Shampoo a few times over along with the Regenerating Hair Care Mask. I’ve found over the years many of my readers don’t necessarily want to splurge on makeup, but are definitely more willing to splurge on hair care or skin care. If you’re new to the line I think the Discovery Sets are the best way to start. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The shampoos work well to tame frizz and smooth my hair. I really love the mask to help with my ends.

Although I do think every piece is exquisite, my top two absolute favorites are the Regenerating Hair Mask and Precious Hair Oil.

Jon Lawson provides a ‘bit’ of news from the drilling sector, spanning advances in software and hardware as well as new rigs making their debut

Atlas Copco has launched a new piece of automation software for drill rigs.

The design enables the rig to create its own drill plans directly at the material face.

This is made possible by downloading the contours of the mine drift (or tunnel) with a drill rule file, allowing the machine to tailor its own plan specifically for the circumstances it is facing.

So rather than importing the 3D mine model into software such as Underground Manager then manually creating the drill plan, the set of rules and the 3D model are input to the drill rig by USB or WiFi. The rig will then make its own drill plans.

One advantage is that this mitigates problems caused by differences in rock or soil cross-section.

Johan Jonsson, global product manager — Face Drilling Equipment (Boomer-range) tells IME, “This dynamic tunnelling package will greatly simplify and reduce the waiting time in many mine and tunnel projects globally. By also creating the drill plan for the actual section where it’s navigated the quality will be improved at the same time.”

Several trial projects have been used to test the new software, including one with Atlas Copco’s customer Veidekke, which is working on the State highway 80 project in Bodø, Norway, removing about 500,000m3 of rock to create two 2.5km tunnels.

Jon-André Nilsen, manager Surveying Technic Underground for Veidekke comments, “The collaboration with Atlas Copco to develop the dynamic tunnelling package went well. They were responsive to our feedback and made adjustments to the program. Today, the drill rig operators make niches manually. They can turn out way too big or way too small. The dynamic tunnelling package makes our drilling more precise. We can make changes to drill plans directly on the rig. We can move cuts or drill holes. We are more flexible at the tunnel face compared to making all the changes at the office. We use the software to make niches. This makes the work more precise.”

Kent Simensen, drill rig operator, adds, “The dynamic package is very easy to use. It is two keystrokes and you are started. The contour turns out very accurate. The end result is identical to the drawing.”

Following on from the success of the project, Jonsson has an update. “The roll out of the package continues globally now and we have so far received orders from Norway, Finland and Sweden. The big benefit with the new software function is that you now are much more flexible. Instead of doing predefined and fixed drill patterns in the office, you now download the 3D model for the tunnel or mine to the drill rig and the drill rig by itself makes the drill pattern at the location it’s navigated to for the actual section and volume it’s supposed to drill.

“The pilot project in Bodö, Norway is running ahead with good progress and we also have units (a Boomer WE3 and Boomer E2) in operations in the Stockholm bypass projects. This will be a really interesting project with a lot of ramp tunnels and changes in cross-section that will hugely benefit from using our dynamic tunnelling package. This is especially important in projects like this, where the contours change.”

Find the thread

Rockmore International has invented what it claims is a new method of improving performance and service life of extension drill tools in surface and underground percussive drilling applications. Dubbed the Vector Rod System, the XT design features a new thread design incorporating new guided cylindrical contact zones between the male and female joints. These are placed in the nose and rear of the thread connections.

Pejman Eghdami, executive vice president of Rockmore International explains, “We specifically targeted an increase in thread service life while enhancing drilling performance in extension drilling applications… we have considerably improved drilling productivity and increased drill string lifetime by introducing these new design features in the XT thread configuration. And just as important, the new XT design is fully reverse-compatible with industry standard T-style threads, enabling the Vector Rod System to be a practical choice for premium drilling tools.”

The company says it has identified several specific improvements with the new design, which is the product of several years of R&D behind the scenes. With improved thread alignment, impact duration when rattling rods during uncoupling connections is reduced, leading to less wasted energy, cooler couplings and better retention of thread grease.

One direction

Ditch Witch of Oklahoma, USA is expanding its range with the launch of the JT40 horizontal directional drill. The machine features a variety of advances including tracker information that is integrated into the displays, and a real-time carriage-position indicator to facilitate more precision.

Seth Matthesen, Ditch Witch senior product manager, horizontal directional drills says, “The unit integrates machine data into an innovative display to keep operators informed and productive on the job. As with all of our products, we continue to seek customer feedback to improve uptime, profitability and performance, and this machine features several new pending patents to do exactly that.”

Operator comfort has not been neglected, and the JT40 can be ordered with a fully enclosed cab with heating and air conditioning, or be open plan with just anti-vandal panels. Power comes courtesy of a 160 HP, Tier 4 Cummins diesel engine with a two-speed, rotational drive system

MITO you

Fraste, hailing from Nogara in Italy, is launching a new hydraulic rig called the MITO 8. Featuring the Fraste articulation system, the machine is offered with a wide range of accessories available for rotation and roto-percussion drilling.

The new drill expands the Mito range that includes the larger MITO 20, MITO 40, MITO 60 and MITO 40 CS.

Update from Sandvik

Sandvik’s Pantera DP1100i has been updated. The hydraulic, self-propelled, crawler-based surface top hammer drill is offered with a choice of powerplants, either a Caterpillar C9, producing 300hp at 1,800rpm for Tier 3 markets or a Caterpillar C9.3, producing 300hp at 1,800rpm for Tier 4F.

It’s remote access-ready, with an enhanced drill parameter set up and step-by-step trouble shooting instructions. The cab is ROPS and FOPS certified and it features Sandvik’s Ergo cool design.
