Sorry if my answers this time are a little short and curt -- I sort of stressed myself out trying to give long explanations, which led me to NOT answering asks in a reasonably timely manner, and I realized I should probably save that effort for when I actually write up the rules proper. Can I submit a song from an MMO that’s been offline for a decade?

Related question: Can I submit a song that is 17 minutes long?

Yes and Yes -- But tumblr has a limit on the file size I can upload for both MP3 and MP4, so I might have to crop it regardless. You can add your recommended crop time to your submission if you feel it might be necessary.

For the song I wanted to submit, the only good youtube link for it was taken down recently. So my options would be to send a youtube link for a version with inferior audio (which also uses a fanmade title rather than the official one), or a link to a google drive file that has the song in good quality. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. Any preference/suggestions as to what I should do?

You can send the google drive link and I'll download it from there if you prefer to have the best audio possible. I'd appreciate having the youtube link as well for the reveal, and then you can drop the google drive link in the comments to share with everyone (if you'd like) :).

While I know submissions aren't open at the moment, I just want to ask so I can find a good submission for when they are, one of the rules states rhythm game songs that aren't EXCLUSIVELY video games songs won't be accepted. Would songs made specifically for a rhythm game count as a video game song in that regard? For example, a lot of songs in bemani games are made specifically for said game either by outside artists or the in-house sound teams.

A very generalized rule you can follow for rhythm games is: - If it's an idol/ensemble-cast/gacha rhythm game: No - If it's a regular rhythm game, such as rhythm heaven, dynamix, arcaea, any arcade game: Yes. This rule specifically exists to rule out submissions of songs from series like Love Live, Bandori, Ensemble Stars, IDOLISH7, etc.

If a song consists of multiple movements that are technically separate tracks in-game (e.g. a multi-phase boss fight) should each movement be submitted separately or can the combined song be submitted?

What if an official soundtrack release includes both (individual tracks for each movement as well as a track combining them?)

You can specify the specific movement you'd like to submit or the entire song, and it doesn't matter to me if they're combined on the official OST or not :) (just let me know if you have a preferred crop time if they ARE combined). If it's something like a two-part boss fight with one song name, I'd just name it like "Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy (first phase)" and "Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy (second phase)". I would probably not post any of the movements individually if the full song had already been posted previously, but I would consider doing the opposite (posting the full song when only movements have been posted previously). This is highly dependent on the particular song.

when revealing songs with in-game music videos (e.g. submissions from the beatmania iidx series), would you be linking an upload of the song with static album art, or one with the video as well?

I pick the youtube video for the reveal based almost entirely on what I think the most "stable" link might be -- links with more views, that's been on youtube for more time, or that's from the composers / other official channel. If they have an in-game music video you'd prefer for the reveal you're more than welcome to indicate that on the submission.

also, i wanted to point out that you sometimes (including in the information masterpost) use the tag #not a vg music poll and sometimes use #not a vgmusic poll and the inconsistency of the space in the tags makes finding those posts awkward

That's definitely allowed :). You can just describe the song the best of your ability or use a commonly attributed name in the fandom or something. I would probably go with something like "[character or area name] theme" or "Song that plays during [chapter/cutscene/moment/fight]". Even just the numbers would be alright.

So Neko Atsume 2 changed its in-game economy to be grindier and push players to spend more money on it. Not unexpected but still frustrating. You can't buy gold fish with silver fish anymore, nor can you get them from daily login rewards. The daily login reward has been changed to just 10 silver fish per day with no cumulative premium food reward after five days. Which means, as far as I've been able to tell, the only free way to acquire gold fish is by the cats bringing them to you at a drip feed, and the only free way to get premium foods is by purchasing them with the now more limited gold fish.*

There is a gold fish statue item which I've been wondering about as a potential additional source for gold fish, but it of course costs gold fish to buy and I'm saving mine for a yard expansion so I haven't checked if it does anything besides sit there and look pretty.

*CORRECTION: You can buy the sashimi vote with silver fish or gold fish. All other premium food is gold fish only.

Favorite mobile game of 2024: Pokemon TCG Pocket

For much of 2024, I was not playing very many mobile games. In fact, for most of the year, I was only playing Merge Dragons - a game I recalled playing in the past and decided to download again. However, right around Thanksgiving, the game started to act up and I decided to delete it - because by then, I was playing quite a few mobile games! 

Neopets put out a game this year, Faerie Fragments, that is pretty good fun. It’s a match 3 puzzle game in the same vein as Candy Crush Saga and such. I can also earn rewards in Neopets for playing the game, including food, neopoints and scratch cards. There are a few little bugs sometimes, like for some reason the game thinks I haven’t redeemed some Neopets rewards, but overall it’s enjoyable. 

A sequel to Neko Atsume, bearing the imaginative title Neko Atsume 2, came out in the fall. It’s delightful, just like the previous installment. This time, they’ve added the concept of wear and tear to the belongings you buy. Over time, things will start to look beat up or threadbare. You can spend a few fish to repair the item, which gives it a different kind of charm. There’s also a “go out” feature that lets you visit other people’s yards, but to be honest I have not used it. I just check in, feed the cats and take pictures when they look especially cute. 

The third game that came out this fall is the one I choose as my favorite mobile game of 2024: Pokemon TCG Pocket. This game is such a blast. I also play TCG Live, and I play physical cards when I can, so it’s interesting to see the ways that Pocket differs from these other TCG varieties. Shortening the bench, removing prize cards and making energy a guaranteed renewable source are interesting ways to keep everything moving along at a quick pace. 

I like trying to do the different challenges when playing in solo mode. The immersive cards are pretty neat. I don’t really do versus mode very often - I did not do very well in the recent event that was focused around consecutive wins - because I tend to lose a lot, though I try my best. I do find myself opening pack after pack of cards I already have simply because I’ve collected so many of the cards in both sets and I need to save up a lot of pack points to fill in the gaps. 

I do wish there was a way to be able to view only the cards that are in foreign languages. I have amassed a nice little collection of foreign cards thanks to various wonder picks and I would love to be able to show them off in a binder! Hopefully that little bit of functionality will be added in a future update. 

Overall, I’ve been very happy with TCG Pocket so far and I am looking forward to playing it in 2025!

That's an interesting statement, because I find phones incredibly clunky and irritating for everyday internet use. On my desktop, i can have as many tabs open as i want. I can play music or a video in the background while i play my game, switch over to discord every so often to see what the gang is up to, switch easily between different art programs for specific things, and have all of these things running at the same time without interruption. There's also a LOT of games i can play on desktop that i can't play on a phone, including emulations of games for consoles i can't get my hands on. When I try to do this on a phone, it... doesn't go well. videos get paused automatically and refuse to pop out, the screen gets crammed quickly, none of my adblockers work so i'm CONSTANTLY fighting the ads to show me the damn recipe i looked up, half my browsers aren't there, and every time i switch to a different window there's a weird stuttering effect on the others. I can't even stay in a discord call and look at a recipe on firefox without discord losing connection and cutting me off. scrolling is also extremely irritating, always jumping around or stuttering. and every. SINGLE. game. has ads every few minutes IF THAT. the only game i've played around with that didn't give me constant advertisements was Neko Atsume, which is not exactly a constant play kind of game. and on top of all that, i instinctively use my pinkie as an anchor when i hold my phone, so my wrist gets tired and sore after too much use. every time i'm stuck with a phone as my only internet source, it's extremely irritating. i genuinely do not understand why someone would chose it as their main hookup when it's so much easier on the desktop. and this isn't oldmanning!! i would genuinely love to hear some someone who feels the desktop is the clunky thing! please, i wanna know :0 i grew up with it, so i'm really blind to the various ways it may be frustrating for new users.

So interestingly I've never been that invested in most ships probably out of being aspec but nevertheless The Captain x The Astronomer (Ayreon - The Source) - a surprise to none of my Ayreontasia mutuals, the husbands have taken over many of my waking thoughts Maedhros x Fingon (The Silmarillion) - I ship this one queerplatonically for reasons but their story really spoke to me Mituna Captor x Latula Pyrope (Homestuck) - ok I haven't thought about Homestuck in a good minute but... it's really sweet to me how this guy allegedly does something hugely self-sacrificing behind the scenes that leaves him a shell of himself and yet he's still so devoted to her... and she's still so protective and devoted to him as well...

Last song: At the moment, I have "Losing Your Memory" by Alan Star stuck in my head, which I suppose makes it my current song, not my last song. Hm. I get songs stuck in my head very easily, but the last one I had there for a significant amount of time was a mashup of different language versions of "Les Rois du Monde" for about a week. "Lehetsz Király", the Magyar version, is probably my favorite of them. It's worth a listen.

Currently watching: Normally, the answer would be "random mostly terrible old movies/shows" or "nothing much", but I currently have a hyperfixation on the musical Roméo et Juliette and have been watching it in multiple languages. (Thus, the song).

Three ships: This is hard. Maybe as a result of being on the ace and aro spectrums, I'm more likely to care about which characters are interacting than whether it's romantic or platonic. Here goes:

Kedivere/Bedikay. It can be romantic, platonic, or queerplatonic, but whichever way, I'm here for it. I probably spend too much time thinking about how in Cullwch and Olwen, when Cai gets mad at Arthur and marches out, Bedwyr stays behind, keeps acting like nothing's happened, and isn't the one to avenge Cai's death. The feeling of betrayal on both sides has a lot of unexplored potential. And the version where Bedivere dies and Kay fights to bring his body back safely while mortally wounded himself... And the version where Bedivere survives Camlann and Kay isn't said to fight in it, so they might be left together after their world has fallen apart...

Platonically or queerplatonically, Galahad and the Grail Heroine. I really like the tragic Grail Quest friendships, but I like theirs most, maybe because there's something weird and otherworldly about them both. I like it when characters are strange and endearing and doomed by the narrative.

Ever since reading John Matthews' retelling, which I read before the original, I've had a soft spot for Caradoc and Guinier. The Story of Caradoc is very disturbing, and I have some major qualms with Caradoc over a detail Matthews cut out, but all the same, there's a reason these two have the best track record with magical fidelity tests. Each of them would go to the ends of the earth for the other, and together, they're stronger than any curse.

Favorite Color: Blue, particularly royal blue and some teals.

Currently consuming: Black licorice with chocolate.

First ship: This is a hard one, since through elementary and most of middle school, I tended to go along with whatever I thought the author's intentions were and was more likely to unship something. The first non-endgame ship I got invested in was Sonya/Nikolai in War and Peace. I didn't like Nikolai, but Sonya did, and she was my favorite character, so I wanted her to be happy. The first non-canon couple I thought was meant to be together was also in War and Peace: Marya Bolkonskaya and Julie Karagina. My eighth grade self did not think their letters could be interpreted platonically. I still don't.

Last movie: If the musical doesn't count, the last movie I watched was Quest for Camelot, which was awful. Though not Robot Monster-level bad, Robot Monster has an elegance to its simplicity which Quest for Camelot lacks.

Currently working on: Various fics, most of them Arthuriana or CotRK-related (I am woefully behind on the Badfic Bingo), and (theoretically) an epic-style poem, though I haven't gotten much of it written for quite a while now.
