A Taste of Soul: Nicole “SG” Oquendo

Souletri is a monthly event, that offers you a live experience like no other. The very personal connection between the artists and fans, is what makes Souletri one of a kind. Our events are a safe haven for artists to give us a true glimpse into their souls. So in this feature we would like to give fans a glimpse into the inner workings of our preforming artists, with a feature we call A Taste of Soul.

How would you describe your Poetry style? 

My own; Unique with a bit of an urban twist, sprinkled with extremely deep emotions. I try to stay true to my voice and self when I perform, so I try not to sound like anyone else when I'm up there.

What was the first piece you ever created as an artist? And How have you grown as an artist since you wrote/performed your first piece? 

First piece I created as an artist was 11 years ago when I was 16, it was a puppy love poem called "If I was your girl" lol, I defiantly grew a lot since then writing wise. The first piece, I shared on stage was  "Dear Depression" at Art N' Soul in West Babylon, NY. I went from stage fright then, to now stepping on stage like it's now my home. My breathe of fresh air. I think me performing without a mic is showing more of my growth as a spoken word artist.

What has been your most memorable moment as a performer? 

Most memorable so far, has to be the live poetry and music event I threw for mental illness, depression, and suicide awareness in May. The amount of support in that room alone that day literally left me speechless. It was beyond beautiful.

What was your experience at Souletri and How would you describe Souletri to someone who hasn't been to an event yet? 

Home. Welcoming. Amazing. I love the vibe at Souletri, it's like everyone in that room is literally family in that moment.

A Taste of Soul: AJ De Pena

Souletri is a monthly event, that offers a live experience like no other. The very personal connection between the artists and fans, is what makes Souletri one of a kind. Our events are a safe haven for artists to give us a true glimpse into their souls. As Souletri grows our community will also grow. So to bridge the gap between the old and the new, we would like to give fans a glimpse into the inner workings of our preforming artists, with a feature we call A Taste of Soul.

How would you describe your Poetry?

I would describe my poetry as honest and raw, emotional, about life realities everyone can identify with. My inspiration is humanity, my being human, others being human.

What was the first piece you ever created as an artist? And How have you grown as an artist since you wrote your first piece?

I really can't remember the first poem I create but I remember the subject matter and it was finding support in a man while I was going through my college pain years. The method hasn't changed but I've definitely grown in content and depth. What has been your most memorable moment as a performer?

My most memorable moment as a performer was definitely the first time I did theater with the Full Circle Ensemble family in 2015. It was surreal to be in a black box alone and memorize a full 2 page poem to act out in front of a full audience. Speaking into the universe my truth and pain for the first time ever was an out of body experience that I never thought would be possible until it came to being part of something bigger than me and learning for the first time I was not alone in being "different". It was amateur at best I think and I made many mistakes but it was liberating for me. And it only got better from there.

What was your experience at Souletri and How would you describe Souletri to someone who hasn't been to an event yet? I would describe Souletri as a fusion of talented individuals who are magic, who create magic, who share magic in every non magical sense of the word but in a very real and passionate way. Words, melody and song truly give life into what Souletri stands for; a trifecta of self expression that appeals to the soul. When you hear D.A. Sempre play the guitar, Sydney Valerio give life to the warrior woman in her words, SG speak raw truths, Rebeca Sol sing powerful lyrics, it takes you somewhere. And I think that's the magical place of reality the audience can relate to. My favorite Souletri moment came in the 1st installment when Moriah Skye accompanied by Jade Zabric sang her heart and soul out and brought us, the audience into the lyrics. Amazing moment. I am so looking forward to being back at The West End this month and connecting the same way.
