I dunno, its funny to me, I hate the SE manga ending, but atleast it had the guts to basically end the institution of "death scythes" and even the endless war between witches and the dwma - I mean it was rushed but still - while BNHA, a series about passing the torch, about the flaws of the old ways, had just minor gradualist reforms?
Maybe I was expecting too much lol
Question received August 3, 2024, answered August 4, 2024--the official publication date of the last My Hero Academia chapter.
I think this has as much to do with real-world applications. It’s similar to the problem of whether you want gradual change in society or immediate change. Personally I get why some change is gradual for the sake of trial and error to see what works; I also think the United States needs a drastic leftward swing to counteract more than 40 years of rightwing regression, and that requires immediate fixes, not gradual changes to policing, social welfare, financial support and debt cancellation, federalization of industries and services, stronger support for labor unions, demilitarization, de-policing, shifting resources and services from police departments to non-police units, and drastic reforms to economics and industry to protect laborers and the environment.
This is a work of fiction. I’m surprised Horikoshi insisted on grounding this in some sort of hyper-realism rather than just letting a happy ending exist. It’s the same problem I have had with the MCU ever since the first Iron Man: the insistence on “grounded in realism” means no magic, little sci-fi, no aliens--and then, boom, suddenly all this unrealistic stuff that clashes and leads to power scaling that is not believable and does not dig into how characters would act in a believable fashion. Horikoshi puts these characters into this setting--and their actions do not strike me as believable for what they would do.
And I do not feel equipped right now to discuss how some of the changes we do see to society are handled. Shoji helped educate against bigotry--why won’t you show us how? Ochaco implemented better counseling in schools to help students with dangerous Quirks--why don’t you show us how? I am so tired of stories that skip past the bureaucratic community organizing--show me those steps. I know Parks and Recreation has its problems, but it was able to make stories out of the process of providing governmental services. I want to see process, even in my action-packed superhero story.
But I reluctantly agree: at least Soul Eater showed a very obvious change to their society first with the pact with the witches and second with the elimination of any future Death Scythes, making sure to not just tell but show in the form of Kid’s humbling of himself to Mabaa, the witches showing up to save the DWMA members on the Moon, and Soul’s ceremony at the DWMA as the last death scythe. Where were the scenes in Chapter 430 showing Ochaco leading Quirk counseling? Give me another scene of Shoji engaging in anti-bigotry work outside of shaking hands with another mutant-type person.

Just found it fascinating that eventhough Soul Eater is a relatively short and younger work with only 113 chapters it actually rivals Hunter x Hunter (a popular long runner with 400 chapters) in terms of fic count. Sure Hunter x Hunter has wayyy more works on Ao3 (the place known for slash fics) but Soul Eater has more works on Fanfiction dot net (the place where f/m ships are more popular than slash ones) and with the two sites combined SE still comes out on top (and Soul x Maka thus end up having more fics than Gon x Killua)
Excuse me for a moment, that the power of SoMa who came from a much shorter and less popular work is able to beat some of the more iconic slash ships between two best friends out there
#also I'm thinking this by also knowing that female characters often are not favored by fic writers#something about how most fic writers are female fans who don't like seeing themselves#hence the prevalence of slash fics#but SE is carried by fic writers who love Maka#that's heartening

Soul Resonance
Maka Albarn, Soul “Eater” Evans and the “Soulmates Trope” done right
I am a sucker for romantic subplots, especially when they are nuanced and involve the idea of soulmates or star-crossed lovers.
In Maka and Soul’s relationship dynamic from Soul Eater, I found exactly that.
In a nutshell, what I love most about their dynamic is how Atsushi Okubo shows the growth of their bond throughout the story through very quiet and nuanced gestures, dialogue and body language.
If anyone reads this... just know that this essay is long and image heavy because it includes content from all 113 chapters. So I apologize with your internet download speed and computer’s cache ahead of time... there were just way too many cute panels not to share.
Soul Eater in a nutshell
I remember the first time I came across the Soul Eater anime more than a decade ago. I was immediately hooked with Atsushi’s interesting twist on the idea of the soul and the rather unique cast of characters that make up Soul Eater--especially the fact that the lead character in this Shonen manga is a female with male comrades who are superior to her in physical strength.
While the main underlying theme of Soul Eater is that of courage in the face of fear and the madness that ensues from seeking power for the sake of power, Atsushi also managed to weave in relationship dynamics based on soul resonance.
In other words, Atsushi was writing about a group of soulmates helping and supporting each other’s growth in the face of the challenges they faced together. Soul Eater is a character-driven story after all.
Platonic Soulmates
The word “soulmate” has been popularized and come into the mainstream lore thanks to the New Age movement. However, with the rise of the idea of soulmates into the mainstream so came the propensity to romanticize the idea of soulmates.
In the true sense of the word, soulmates are not just meant to become romantic partners, but rather, soulmates are the people who come into your life to help you grow as a person. This means soulmates can be friends, lovers, parents, siblings, beloved pets, or even the antagonist figures in your life.
Atsushi does a great job of depicting the platonic nature of soulmates when he shows the care and affection that Maka and her comrades have for one another.
In particular, he shows characters like Black Star speaking of and demonstrating care for Kid, Maka and Soul. But you also have the bond between Kid and the Thompson sisters.
In Soul Eater speak, the fact that these characters’ souls resonate with one another, brings them closer together.
Romantic Soulmates
But what happens when that bond becomes romantic in nature?
As I mentioned earlier, I am a sucker for romantic subplots. And while I may be projecting onto Maka and Soul and idealizing their relationship, I like to think that they have both a platonic and romantic soulmate bond.
Just so you know, if you are an anime-only fan, I will also be focusing on the manga since the end of the anime is not canon. Beware of spoilers!
When it comes to relationships, it’s all about the Soul
Right from the start, even though Atsushi spends a lot of time on fan service, he also presents the idea that, in simple terms, the soul, or a person’s true essence is more important than their physical appearance.
The dynamic between Maka and Soul is interesting in that a person’s soul essence is something that not only goes beyond their body’s physical appearance, but also beyond chemistry at the level of the personality.
This is also obvious from the start because, even if Soul likes to look like a “cool guy while Maka is more of an earnest person and a book-worm, they are able to work together rather well by matching their respective soul’s wavelengths.
Interestingly enough, this difference in their personalities also becomes a source of conflict during the Salvage arc when Maka feels insecure that she doesn’t understand some of Soul’s personality well enough, like his interest in jazz music. She therefore doubts that she is right to be paired up with him as a weapon technician.
To Soul, however, their personalities being different is a non-issue as he has complete trust in their bond. Not only are Maka and Soul incredibly comfortable with each other, they simply understand each other on a level no other character in the story get either of them.
Atsushi shows this through small gestures like Maka holding Soul’s hand when he wakes up from a nightmare after Chrona wounded him fatally.
A gesture which Soul returns by squeezing Maka’s hand right back.
Dammit they’re just so damn cute...
We also see that Maka feels comfortable enough to hold Soul while she cries. And not only is she comfortable holding onto Soul for strength, he also willingly makes himself available to Maka as a “shoulder to cry and lean on”.
I just can’t with how fcking cute they are with each other dammit...
Another small gesture I loved is when Maka is affected by the Clown’s madness and Soul helps her come back to her senses because he knows the real Maka is beneath the mask she’s put on.
This is one of several times Soul and Maka help each other come back to their senses.
Another favorite is, again, during the Salvage Arc when they get separated from the group in the chapter for Sloth in the Book of Eibon.
After they each face their insecurities (they are both a part of each other’s vision in different ways), they come together again.
The Weapon and the Weapon Technician bond
Another theme that is prevalent in the story is that of the Weapon always deferring all decisions and importance to the Weapon Tech. As such, Weapons are shown as always agreeing to whatever the Tech says or sometimes risking their lives for them.
On second thought, however, we mostly only see Soul as the one willing to not only protect Maka, but also risk his life in order to keep her safe.
I am wondering if this protector trait is one that Atsushi only gave the males in the story seeing as we also see Black Star protecting Tsubaki during the Youtou arc, which is the opposite dynamic because in their case we have the Tech protecting the Weapon.
But other than that, although Weapons are shown saying they will protect their Tech, we don’t really see other Weapons risking their lives for their Tech in the same way we see Soul protecting Maka.
Regardless, it is implied that in order to work together, the Weapon and the Tech have to have a strong bond.
Based on this idea alone, that makes Soul and Maka platonic soulmates. They’re just two “friends” or comrades who are growing, maturing and pushing each other to grow together.
But I suspect there’s more to Maka and Soul than their relationship as Weapon and Tech.
I dare say, they are attracted to each other physically as well.
Even if Soul keeps picking on Maka about her lack of sex appeal, Atsushi shows us Soul’s “type” during the Salvage arc when they go into the Book of Eibon to rescue Kid.
Surprisingly, as a female, Soul looks a lot like Maka in that she’s not voluptuous like the other female cast members and acts like a princess just the way Maka’s girly personality can be entitled.
We can say the same for Maka’s male version as a guy in that boy-Maka is twinkish and rigid like Soul.
This particular instance aside, Maka also Maka-Chops Soul for looking “cool” while in Russia. The kicker is that she was blushing, meaning: did she feel more than annoyance and admiration for Soul when he overcame the Black Blood’s madness?
So... is there more to Maka and Soul than a platonic soulmate relationship?
Maka wants more than friendship from Soul
I mean... if you don’t think all of the panels I’ve shown are super romantic then I am not sure what would convince you.
FFS, most of what Soul says to Maka is borderline romantic...
That being said, I kind of have to wonder when their dynamic changed.
I have the feeling that when they met, their souls recognized each other--that’s what soulmates do. However, their relationship started as strictly platonic because their personalities are so different.
As they grew closer from spending time together as a Weapon and Tech, I dare say, somewhere along their time together, they both developed romantic feelings for each other.
Let’s not forget that Maka’s parents were once a Weapon and a Tech duo before they got married, so the predisposition for a Weapon and their Tech to fall in love with each other is already there.
The first time we’re shown that Maka is interested in Soul’s affection is when she learns how to use Soul to fly after turning him into a Deathscythe. Not only does she imply she wishes he’d refer to her as an angel, she’s blushing while she tells him this. Thus implying Maka wishes Soul was more overt with his displays of affection the way Ox is with Kim.
We learn Maka’s soul is a special kind of soul and that as a result they may be able to manifest angel wings--something Maka loves the idea of.
Soul initially finds this annoying because he can’t picture Maka as a “cute” angel.
In the end, Soul ends up relenting and giving her the cute and fluffy wings she wants even if they are useless for battle. He even calls her Angel-chan to prove his point he knows her best and she’s not a “cutesy angel”.
And perhaps that’s what I love most about how their dynamic/romance is portrayed. It isn’t over the top declarations of love, but rather, a quiet and complete understanding of each other depicted through small gestures.
In order to increase their soul resonance, Soul and Maka have to touch. But the most important gesture, in my eyes, is all of the hand-holding going on between these two.
They seriously have me swooning over here...
While they are shown holding hands here and there at the beginning of the story, their hand-holding actually increases towards the later chapters. They seriously have an interesting familiarity with each other like that of a couple that has been together for ages.
I also wonder whether Maka’s love language is physical displays of affection. This would explain why she Maka-chops him often too.
Towards the end of the manga, Soul and Maka face what is perhaps the biggest challenge to their relationship and romantic bond--the fear of connection actually drives them apart.
Atsushi depicts this through Chrona getting in the way of Soul and Maka, as well as Black Star and Tsubaki, from being able to resonate with each other. For Chrona who had suffered from early childhood trauma from neglect and abandonment, bonding and connecting with others was a source of fear and distress.
Fortunately, they are both well aware of their soulful bond and willing to fight for their connection and that is ultimately what makes them stronger as a Weapon and Tech duo.
Perhaps in drawing Soul and Maka resting their foreheads together, other than it being a cute “gesture”, Atsushi meant to show that the source of their strength as a duo lies upon the fact that Maka gets Soul and Soul gets Maka.
Which brings me full circle to Maka wanting more than Soul’s friendship. Towards the end of the manga, she’s even fearful of the thought of being split up from him if he decided not to re-enroll in Shibusen.
What I love is that, throughout the whole manga, Soul demonstrates his affection for Maka in his own way--by showing his gratitude for having Maka in his life every opportunity he gets through small gestures. In fact, as I have shown, Soul is always reassuring her that he trusts her and will always be there for her.
So Maka doesn’t need to ask for Soul to call her an angel the way Ox does with Kim, because to Soul, Maka means more than a word like angel could ever begin to explain.
And perhaps that’s what I love most about this pairing. For Soul, it was always about Maka’s soul and his connection to it. He doesn’t need to tell her how he feels, because Soul knows that Maka knows how he feels.
Even so, Soul never hesitates to show his affection by reminding her of it.
In the end, together, through their soul resonance, they create music. A music and soul resonance that they will continue to share with the world.
The “Romantic Soulmates Trope” done right
I think it is possible to argue that Soul and Maka’s bond is strictly platonic. However, I cannot help but see the romantic undertones. Again, it could be the hopeless romantic in me.
That being said, if this is not just my interpretation of their relationship, but rather Atsushi purposely created their dynamic to be one of romantic and platonic soulmates, I have to admit he’s done a masterful job of it.
In other words, where Atsushi did not use nuance in the majority of the story, he used it to depict how special Soul and Maka’s bond is.
Where other Shonen manga (or manga in general) depict romantic relationships between characters with one character pining after the other, Atsushi brings a refreshing take on romance in that he doesn’t need to be in your face about Soul and Maka having a special bond.
Soul and Maka’s love and affection for each other does not need to be over-the-top confessions of love like in Shojo manga either. There is no need for flowery backgrounds or sitting under a sakura tree or sharing their lunch.
Rather, Atsushi shows us they are in love with each other through small, nuanced gestures, dialogue, and their body language.
I only re-read Soul Eater for Soul and Maka
Well damn...
I initially only wanted to find the panels that I used at the beginning of the article. I am not entirely sure why I decided to read the whole manga but I am glad I did because, while I absolutely love those two panels, they are better enjoyed when in context of Soul and Maka’s relationship as a whole.
Another reason I’m glad I did a full re-read of the manga is that the manga is full of little moments between Soul and Maka that had me swooning like a 14-year-old girl.
In the end, Soul and Maka re-awakened in me a desire that I have a tendency to bury deep within myself--the desire to connect with others at a soul level. More specifically a romantic partner.
In that way, Soul Eater will always hold a special place in my heart as that one manga that reminded me what I appreciate and want from my romantic relationships.

"He thought too many manga had characters who were developed through flashbacks, which he considered too clever. Therefore, he decided to develop his characters in the present rather than referring to their pasts, and to focus on 'action and momentum,' so he could 'write freely.'"
...Write...freely...
The fans keep screaming that he planned all along for Fire Force to be a prequel, but then you have the dude here saying he prefers to write freely--and now, doing a 180, decides, "Nah, let's force a prequel out of this firefighters series."
When I keep saying that "with Fire Force, he just kept doing the opposite of what he did with Soul Eater," this is what I mean.
And it just makes me think Fire Force suffered for it, and making it a prequel just screws over Soul Eater.
Have a girl lead in Soul Eater? Just make a rather two-dimensional shonen protagonist lead for Fire Force. (Don't get too angry at me, readers--I think fan works largely do better with Shinra. I would say he made Maka more complex so he went the opposite direction and made Shinra more simplistic--but I think this exercise also exposes how he really could've made Maka more complex.)
Have a pigtail girl as the lead in Soul Eater and don't largely reduce her to sex gags? Do the opposite for Tamaki in Fire Force.
Focus on forward momentum in Soul Eater without getting bogged down with too much back story? Reduce all of Fire Force down so that it ends up becoming too much back story for Soul Eater that bogs down the ending of Fire Force and just bogs down a lot of enjoyment for fans. (Sorry, screwing over headcanon with bogged-down canon is annoying, even if that complaint is more on me as a fan and less on the text as it stands on its own.)
About the only good thing Fire Force did overall was taking death seriously, the opposite of Soul Eater treating injuries as more inconveniences and making Death a literal clownish figure--and then that gets taken away from us. I really wish Fire Force had stuck to its guns and said, "No, dead is dead, let's show that, with firefighting, people die, and it's not worth your life to die for a senseless sacrifice that you think is 'heroic' when real heroism can be only dying as a last resort, because you're going to be smarter and stay alive so that you can keep saving more people."
I know I said before that at least the finale of Fire Force stuck to most of this message ("protect others without getting yourself killed"), but it does so with the biggest unrealistic death cheat.
Yeah, I know, I keep insisting that fiction should be believable, not realistic--but this series was the one treating death as "realistic" in the sense that you're not surviving these injuries, before the ending undoes all of that.
Hell, this is why I also said Shinra getting healed by Huang was the jump the shark moment and led to the series downfall: we just spent all this time saying "dead is dead," only to let Shinra get saved through bullshit magic, and that was the start of the descent, where now it's inevitable that this series is not going to let death stick. It's not a happy Doctor Who "everybody lives": it's a cynical Soul Eater prequel dressed up to look like a pseudo-intellectual treatise--and I don't now what's worse, doing this just for marketing, or pretending it's not for marketing and that there is some deep message to all of this.
I feel badly still whining about this series, and I really hope decent people are getting something ethical out of this series, even if it's just good-hearted entertainment. But when you keep maligning all religions like an edgelord, keep salivating over the chance of a Soul Eater anime reboot that is just going to lead to the Chapter 113 mess, and even defend Ohkubo's "Tamaki should just accept her role as eye candy, because that's what girls and women should be" trash, I don't know...It's stuff like this that still has me with one foot out the door from Soul Eater overall. If not for fan content, I would end up just turning my back on all of the series.

Soul Eater only had 113 chapters? I guess following made it seem a lot longer. I mean, yeah I guess it is a bit over 2 years of writing assuming it came out weekly but still, I truly thought it ran longer

okay my brain is on a soul eater train of thought (again) and i wanna ramble about what i find one of if not the most confusing part of it
now, we all know the chapter/episode with hero and excalibur was just a special bonus or whatever, but like... even this many years later... its purpose still perplexes me.
first off, it introduces and focuses on a new character (hero) that never becomes relevant again. hero is said to be the worst meister ever, has no weapon partner, and he is a classmate of the main characters (more on that later)
hero is bullied by kim, jackie and black☆star simply because he is so pathetic. i get that kim and jackie weren’t yet fleshed out when that chapter was written, but having your new character be bullied by one of the most beloved ones (b☆s) to try and make readers sympathize with him is kind of an odd narrative decision tbh.
except once hero partnered with excalibur, we find out he’s fundamentally an unlikeable person in his revenge.
in order to get back at black☆star for trying out a bunch of wrestling moves on him without permission, he not only uses excalibur to defeat black☆star in a fight, but also kid and kilik, who did not do anything to hero really and weren’t involved. and to get back at kim and jackie for making him buy their lunch a lot, he sexually harasses them, and a whole bunch of other girls. not only is this way worse than what kim and jackie had done to hero, but it’s framed as fanservice, which is a problem that is unfortunately very common in ohkubo’s work that continues to this day.
there’s a reason everyone hated him and went right back to pushing him around as soon as he could no longer take being around excalibur.
so yeah it’s really weird that the bonus chapter was basically “some weak nobody partners up with excalibur and goes on a revenge rampage against the characters readers actually know, most of which weren’t even involved and you are going to root for him because he was bullied :(”
looking back at the chapter/episode and how it fits into the larger narrative, well... it doesn’t. which is to be expected of a bonus chapter.
i mean, it was serialized/aired after the kishin revival, yet there was no mention of crona being in class crescent moon (which means either they simply weren’t included even though all the other kids both main and supporting were, or this bonus took place between the first appearance of excalibur and the kishin revival)
and when jackie was further fleshed out as a character, her behavior towards hero (before being harassed. it was justified after he showed his true colors) was rendered ooc. also, when NOT! came around and the concept of the NOT and EAT departments was introduced, the idea that hero, the narrative-proclaimed worst meister ever, would be in the upper 10% of dwma students that made up the EAT department didn’t make sense.
so based on all that you’d think the bonus chapter was non-canon or retconned.
but it wasn’t either of those. because ohkubo had hero make a cameo in the crowd during chapter 113.
so i can’t write it off as non-canon despite having inconsistencies with the narrative at the time and after more character- and worldbuilding.
god why did i write such a long post about a piece of what’s essentially filler that has no repercussions to the enjoyment of the work if you skip?

And, because this is me still being on a whine fest...
That's not getting into how at least one other fan and I feel about how we had hoped "Support the official release" of both the Yearbook and the NOT home video releases would send a message that we want more Soul Eater stuff...and, for me, not my friend, what we end up getting is continued obsession by a fandom for a reboot that they want to stick so close to Chapter 113 and Fire Force sequel bullshit that is only going to disappoint, and, having already spoiled it, Fire Force getting ready to wrap up its anime and ruin a lot of the good vibes I got from Soul Eater by retroactively changing what worked in that series all for the disappointing result of boring worldbuilding and giving answers about Soul Eater that are less engaging than the mysteries of Soul Eater.
I want people to support the official release, if not for Ohkubo because, honestly, the dude is gross, and definitely not for large corporations that are monopolizing anime and manga distribution and even news coverage at least in the United States, then for the people who worked on the manga and the anime who deserve whatever they do get, however small, from the official release.
(Of course, directly supporting the artists, staff, and actors who worked on these projects would be, duh, more direct: there are enough actors who worked on the Soul Eater English dub who make podcasts, livestreams, illustrations, convention appearances--go support them.)
But, maybe it's because I'm one person with a platform incredibly small compared to more influential fans and scholars online, I do not have much confidence my continued and still current support of the official releases does much of anything to influence what comes next in the franchise, not least of which owing to the fact that, again, elder fan, so far outside the age demographic.
(And yes, some of this owes to having just sat through some annoying takes from certain online people with much larger platforms where I just flat-out disagree with their logical, evidence-based arguments because, nah, I just don't agree.)

I gave it a few weeks.
Nah, Ohkubo is still screwing up a decent story with dumb fanservice crap. I wrote this shortly after the latest chapter went back to the well of bad comedy.
And I fear the anime is going to make him go to Soul Eater Chapter 113 levels of crap again.
I think I got into Soul Eater because of what fans dd with the story. And while the fans of Fire Force do a lot good with that original content, I think the repetitive jokes at the expense of female characters makes my engagement of the series and participating in the fan community really difficult. : \

I didn’t realize how short Soul Eater was (113 chapters)
You could easily read it in a week, 3 days if you’re dedicated enough and quite literally have nothing better to do
