Man, I really do not care about the Quincy and I have spent a lot of time avoiding thinking too deeply about the Quincy, but we're getting onto that part of the new anime and also @troius has been posting about them a lot lately and I have been forced to think about them and they really just don't make any damn sense.
For starters: confession time! The weird, pseudo-medieval place where the Bazz - Jugram flashbacks took place? I always assumed that took place inside the Schatten Bereich. It was never clear to me whether the Quincy lived mortal life spans (why shouldn't they? aren't Quincy just humans with powers?) or whether they were, like, ghosts of Quincy. (The shinigami slaughtering the Quincy and then they just show up in Soul Society one-by-one and have to evade the ghost cops and find each other again and create a secret empire would actually have been pretty cool imo) I guess the real answer is that by staying inside Soul Society, they become like souls and never age? That if, for example, the Karakura Kids had stuck around in Soul Society after the Soul Society arc, the same thing would have happened to them?
Tumblr media
Anyway, I guess I had assumed that the Quincy just lived this parallel existence inside a place that was very much like Soul Society, complete with bizarro mismatches of time period and fashion and technology. I thought this all took place, like 15 years ago? Or, possibly, if the Schatten Bereich does have similar properties to Soul Society, it could have taken place something on the order of 50-100 years ago, giving their story a similar timeline to most of our "main" shinigami characters (Rukia and Renji, Hinamori and Hitsugaya, Gin and Matsumoto, for ex)
Apparently, I was wrong, and all that took place 1000 years ago. Where, exactly? Why are there no historical records of this? Or are there, and Ichigo just slept through it in history class?
This implies that all the Sternritter characters have been living together in this Quincy pocket dimension for 1000 years (putting them on the same age paradigm as Kyouraku and Ukitake), which just rings really dumb to me. They're so intense. I feel like Bazz and Jugram should have either made up or killed each other long before this. I can't believe that Bambi has been sex-murdering dudes for 1,000 and everyone still lets her do it. Don't get me wrong! Problematic people living together for 1,000 can definitely happen! This was the entire plot of Harrow the Ninth! But the Lyctors in Harrow act like people who have lived together for an impossible amount of time: they have an unspeakable weight to their relationships that the Sternritter completely lack. (Also, why is their clothing so modern??? Ishida's been harping on Quincy Style since we met him, but where did it come from if most of the Quincy have been off-plane since before the Crusades???)
Furthermore, what about the Quincy in the World of the Living? Did the Schatten Bereich? This morning, I was reading this troius post, which points out that maybe the Wandenreich should have wanted revenge on Mayuri for what he did to them, and to Ishida Souken in particular. But maybe they didn't give a shit about Living World Quincy? They certainly didn't seem upset (or possibly even aware) of the Auswählen that killed Masaki and Katagiri. There are a couple times that some of the Sternritter make reference to some of them being younger, and not knowing things that happened the first time around. Were more of them recruited from the World of the Living?
Tumblr media
It seems like this was the case with Äs Nödt. I wonder if he even knew he was a Quincy before Yhwach showed up in his hospital room. Is it possible that the reason he's in the hospital is because of the Auswählen? (this feels very That's So Yhwach! to me, if this is the case)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I read a fanfic once (I think it might have been this one, but it's 400k words and I read it years ago so I could be wrong) where Souken had been a prominent Quincy intellectual within the Schatten Bereich and he left to go back to the World of the Living, which caused a bunch of bad blood. That would go kind of a long was in explaining why the Sternritter wouldn't give a shit about Mayuri, and also why no one really cares about Ryuuken, either. This was also the source of the tension in the Ishida family between Souken and his wife and between Souken and Ryuuken.
I don't really have any grand conclusion I'm driving towards, just that the entire Quincy backstory could have been really good and meaty, but instead, it's just stage scenery that falls over if you actually try to put any weight on it.

Questions for the Mun meme: 1) Are you happy with how your favorite canon muse was portrayed in canon? 2) Have you ever started to ship a rare-pair? 3) What’s something you find weird on here (Tumblr)?
1) Are you happy with how your favorite canon muse was portrayed in canon
Yes and no. I was pleasantly surprised that Jugram and Bazz got such a good and relatable background story. It's rare to see dysfunctional friendship that do not work out getting portrayed in a compelling way in the genre.
I also think Kubo did well with how he presented Jugram's being abused. He gave us a very eerie feeling of what was going without needing to dwell into graphic depiction, which I find highly appreciable.
On the down side, I think more could have been done with the Quincy and this war as a whole, with more flashbacks and backstories. I find it hard to get invest in the characters and in the battle on an 'emotional' level.
I would have liked for Ishida to have a bit of a stronger motivator to go against Quincy, such as carrying on Souken's legacy and wanting to build a better future, meanwhile challenging the Quincy internally in their beliefs. Meanwhile, on the other side, Ichigo does the same but with Shinigami.
I digressed a little, but I wanted to rant a little. Though I greatly respect and appreciate Kubo for doing his best to finish the story despite being burned out.
2) Have you ever started to ship a rare-pair?
Yes! I don't limit myself to canon when it comes to shipping as when it comes to writing in general; especially in a world like Bleach's, with so many characters, there are a lot of interesting avenues one could explore.
In a more general manner, I dislike how romance is usually portrayed in media so I like to make my own.
3) What’s something you find weird on here (Tumblr)?
Can't really think of anything weird that is specific to Tumblr.
But I'd say, and don't hate me on this one ppl (haha), but the over focus on graphics. Nothing being wrong into visual and design, wanting your blog to look nice and personalised. Myself I like it.
But my problem is when it comes at the cost of accessibility: for instance font that are so small you can't really read, too much image and formatting that makes reading difficult. As someone with ADHD, it can be sometimes challenging.
You don't see people writing books or fiction doing it, so I'm not sure how it's become a thing in rp.
Then again, it's only my opinion and pretty harmless, if it's something that brings people fun and joy, they should keep doing it.

One thing I find neat is how each Ishida shares one kanji in common with the previous Ishida.
Souken and Ryuken share the “弦” kanji, meaning “Bowstring”.
Then we have Ryuken and Uryu sharing the “竜” kanji, meaning “Dragon”.
Presumably, any child of Uryu would thus share the “雨” kanji, meaning “Rain”.

Bleach - Name Games
Tumblr media
Other than the Kurosaki’s (and Shiba) and Kuchiki families perhaps one of the most notable is the Ishida family.  The name Ishida(石田) is a nice simple name reading “Stone Field.”  Similar to Kuchiki the name here is used to reflect the family tree’s status; a Field (full) of Stones is a kind of metaphor for a barren field.  A field with rocks in the soil can’t be properly plowed and doesn’t take well to plant roots.  It refers to the fact that the Ishida family and the Quincy tradition that it represents is a barren one.  To this end the name Uryuu is given its significance.  At first glance Ichigo even mispronounces Uryuu’s name as “Ametatsu,” drawing particular emphasis to the word for Ame(雨), meaning “Rain.”
Uryuu(雨竜) is written with the kanji for “Rain” and “Dragon.”  Dragons in Japanese mythology are associated with water, often said to sleep in the bed of lakes and ponds, said to be the embodiment of rivers themselves, and said to be bringers of rain and storms.  This positions Uryuu as a bringer of rain, and thus of growth and fertility, which plays into his family’s barren field imagery.  Uryuu is meant to be the one who will revive his family’s dead legacy, and indeed the only one capable of doing so as The Last Quincy.
From here, one of the fun things with the men of the Ishida family is that they kind of play a game of dominoes, matching end to end...
Ryuuken(竜弦) uses the same Ryuu(竜) kanji meaning “Dragon,” and the kanji Ken(弦) which means “Bowstring.”  A pretty obvious meaning.  In Japanese mythology, as well as Chinese from which it is originally borrowed, dragons are also considered god-like entities and associated with the divine mandate of royalty behind mytho-historical god-emperors.  The implicit association here being with great power and godliness, effectively naming Ryuuken “the god of the bowstring,” which is directly reflective of his self introduction in chapter 186: Tell Your Children The Truth.
Souken(宗弦) is written as Sou(宗) which has a few meanings broadly speaking, but among them “religion" or ”sect”/”denomination” and in a kind of related way,  “main point”/"origin” or ”essence,” and again, Ken(弦) for “Bow string.“  The way this reads is in relation to the rest of the family is that, like Ryuuken’s implicit “god of the bowstring,” Souken is the “religion of the bowstring.“  But also “origin of bowstring“ as a very literal reflection if the fact that he is the source of Uryuu’s Quincy skills.

Changes to Pre-Series Events for KSH
So, I switched some stuff around with two of the trans men, filled in Chad's backstory and family, developed an interesting thing between Issin and Ryuken, and filled in some neighbours of Ichigo, as well as cleaned up some loose ends about reorganising the Siba/Isida/Kurosaki houses.
1. Jugo is actually pretty grunge and also doesn’t want kids. He actually doesn't even like having hair longer than Kurt Cobain. Cobain is also the most concise way to explain his preferred style of dress. This meshes better with his attitude in canon and what I added--that he escaped his transphobic abusive family to live with Buzz and his grandparents, who were fairly accepting, and was quite happy before Bach killed them to get to Buzz and especially Jugo. They lived in rural Venezuela instead of Germany (?) but Jugo did come from Germany.
2. Ichigo wants and has a few. This allows Kazui to exist, meshes better with him and his attitudes towards children and family in canon.
3. Ichigo now potentially has a 2 y.o. with Chad at the story’s outset. This also lets me talk about “don’t abandon your goddamn children even if they aren’t doing exactly what you want them to do.” It ends up providing an interesting contrast to Ryuken and Uryu’s relationship and Ryuken’s inflexibility/Uryu not wanting to call him dad and sneaking around to use his powers. For consistency’s sake, Rukia would recognise Captain Kurosaki (canon plothole), so it’s been long planned Issin comes clean off the bat.
4. It’s probably been mentioned before that Ryuken and Masaki are siblings in this. Souken had a grandfather Keita Isida, who had a descendant in Japan born in ‘39, Kaien, who helped them flee to Japan in the height of Apartheid in the '60s. Despite being ¼ Japanese, Souken was designated Black, and “Mrs Isida” (not that they could actually marry) was white from the start and pretty racist. It’s possible to marry someone you’re racist against. I’m part Asian. Trust me. I’ve had it done to me and was born of a relationship that didn’t end in marriage between a mixed guy and a racist.
5. Ichigo and Chad are still just non-romantic best friends and will always be.
6. I came up with this because of kids I knew who ended up in medical emergencies and abusive situations after they ended up pregnant PLUS California is a rare exception but most places demand sterility to recognise your gender. So this is both an issue with parenting and an issue that needs discussion for trans people lumped in to one. The latter, Ichigo has more as an adult and is addressed on its own onscreen separate from the issue of abandoning your children because we think “controlling your children,” controlling another human being, is a good thing for some reason. I feel like the point here is it won’t always end up optimal, but your child’s life is their own and not yours. And you committed the rest of yours to caring for them and loving them no matter what when you decided to keep/adopt them. And trying to “control them” isn’t gonna do either of you much good. Sure, Uryu is valedictorian and never gets in school fights and Ichigo is a teen dad who’s always in fights, but who trusts their dad that they can talk to them?
7. The “totally not an orphanage” (they have a name like “Orphan Welfare Facility,” but they’re totally orphanages) that Chad stayed at until the siblings that ran it (missionaries from Kenya, Sister Mary and Reverend Luke Gisemba, not white supremacist assholes) just gave him a apartment near them because the bullying was so bad are actually aware of Chad’s daughter’s lineage and are totally down with Ichigo’s transness. They also create a chain going back to a priest in Mexico City to ensure Yasuko can have children's books in both her parents' languages, since she was born in '98, before buying on the Web really took off. This meshes well with what I have them do to Kamakura First International High School later on.
8. Ichigo and Chad’s daughter is Yasuko Kurosaki.
9. Chad’s original last name was Soto. It was changed because some of the bullying involved other kids locking him out because “soto” is not a name, but the word “outside” in Japanese. His parents enlisted in the US military to gain US citizenship, hence Okinawa. They were shipped off to the front lines of the Gulf War, dying in February '91. Chad stayed with his granpa and he has an Aunt Laura who lives in Yuracuero.
10. Chizuru’s out about being a lesbian and gets close to Ichigo. She actually lives close to the clinic, and met Ichigo before Kamakura Int'l High. She has an aunt from Siberia (she’s a result of the Russo-Japanese war) and the aunts meet when Yasuko is born and get along very well despite the language barrier. They’re both hard-partying gals. They may end up like-liking Kenpachi a/o Retu.
11. Another neighbour is Mrs. Satou. No relationship to Tousirou’s grandma Satou Noriko. It’s an incredibly common name. An expy of a same name character from the TV Asahi dramedy Sinigami-kun, she’s a widow at age 90 at the outset of the series. But still spends time with her husband who is a spirit, her best friend, a Vietnamese immigrant, who is also a spirit, accepts Ichigo because “we all change! I wasn’t always a wrinkled anarchist!” Likes SMAP, Dragon Ash, and Usher, and is chill with all people and forms of (after)life, as long as they’re not bigots. Probably would just think Yoruichi’s turning into a cat is neat if she finds out.
12. About Kaien. He dies in '75, and is a normal soldier in Squad 13. Miyako is the VC. He still treats Rukia like a normal human being and Miyako is a graceful and efficient VC that deserves and commands respect, so nothing is really lost there.

“i don’t understand, why are you doing this?” [ from x-vandrelyst-
He twisted his head above his shoulder, following the sound of the voice talking to him, as he put back his sword into its scabbard.
He took a moment to consider the nature of the stranger woman while his eyes settled on her face. If she could see that Hollow, then she was no mere human, but she didn't look nor feel like a Shinigami either, even in its substitute form.
No, her aura and spiritual energy, albeit subtle, felt familiar. The kind of familiarity that echoed within one's own blood and soul... And the revelation left him even more perplexed at her question.
She looked young, but old enough to know what a Hollow was and what they represented to Quincy.
Lest, she was one of these naïve or deluded youngsters that called themselves 'pacifists' or 'anti-war' and advocate for peace achieved through sole wishful thinking that could magically sweep unfairness and years of injustice under the rug.
His mind was digressing.
'Because Hollows are poison to our kind, miss.' He couldn't really think of any other way to answer but rhetorical, however, without intent to come off in any way as condescending. He'd give her the benefit of the doubt that she could genuinely be ignorant. As himself, he once was as a child, although a phenomena growing rarer these days with the increase accessibility to information with technology.
'Do you disagree?' But first, he wanted to opt out any affiliation to Ishida Souken's philosophy or any 'new age' movement, that could turn into a great deal of troubles for him.
