Thesis Diary #17

Today I finally finished reading, highlighting and annotating the article regarding a sociologicaly point of view of the European witch craze. It was pretty interesting although I don't know how much it will actually serve me in my thesis. I also continued reading and annotating C. Ginzburg's I Benandanti. Since I don't have huge updates on my work I though it might be useful to write a bit on how I am keeping my thesis notebook, I am still perfecting it, but there's a few sections that are proving to be very useful. I am keeping everything in the same journal so I am making sure to have very bold titles for each page, this helps with finding things easily, plus tab notes are also great to find quickly certain pages. The main pages are notes on specific articles and sources I am reading and working on, in these I always have a top section with the infomations on the source, authors, where I found it, dates of pubblication, etc. In these pages I write down my notes and if there are specific ideas or thoughs I have while reading the souce I write these down with a colourful pencil. This is helping a lot. Other very useful pages are a notes page, where I write down all thoughts, ideas and annotations that don't really belong in other pages, I make sure to write down the date of when I am writing something to make it easier to find. A page for writing down all questions and interesting thoughts that might help me with shaping the thesis itself. It being a historical research thesis, it needs to be based on specific questions to which I found answers to with the historical sources. So having a page to write down all possibe questions and thoughts is fundamental. A page with the general chronology of the events, this is super useful, and I will probably write a million versions of it, but It's a great tool to keep under the eye. A souces page, I will surely make many of these, but I am trying to write down in one single place all sources I read and use. I now have a page with the sources on the specific trial I am working on, one with articles that are more on the genral historiogaphy. Later on I will have a big on with all the sources I'll use to write the thesis, with key words to remember where I want to use which source in my text. Surely with time I'll have to create more specific pages, but at this moment of the work, here's what I am using.

On a personal level today I got the shortest haircut I have have got, and I love it. It was kind of impulsive, since I randomly got my appointment yesterday, but I am really happy with it. My brother was so nice cause he offered to give me a ride there and waited for me.

So I really want to begin deity work, my problem is that even though I want to worship other deities, I feel the urge to worship Hellenic gods/goddesses since there are so many resources and an abundance of prayers where there aren’t for deities I actually *want* to work with. I do sincerely like the idea of worshipping Hellenic gods, but I don’t know if it’s a bad thing to choose to worship one deity over another because it seems easier? And there are more resources for beginners?

No, I don't think it is wrong. I understand a lot of people would prefer to worship gods they have information on, that just makes sense.

I think when it comes to sources it depends on a few things.

Which culture / pantheon are these other deities you want to worship from? That will be a good indicator on how difficult things will be from the get-go. Knowing this can help you prepare yourself for how deep you need to dig. You said Hellenic deities have an abundance of resources but many others do as well such as Roman, Egyptian, and others once you know where to look. Some might have a bit harder time but the information is still there such as Mesopotamian or Slavic. Still some have information but it is indeed hard or scarce to find such as Arabian or Iberian.

What do you have accsess to? Are you a university student, if so you have got a massive advantage by having accsess to online scholarly databases. If you speak another language that is also very helpful to expand the pool of resources you can use especially for certain pantheons for example Slavic pantheons if you can read a Slavic language you are much better off research wise.

How good are your research and vetting skills? While you may be knew to polytheism you may or may not be new to using sources for other things (unless you are then ignore this) Think about what you already know how to do and re-apply it.

I'm in multiple discords for pantheons where information can be scarce. Such as Arabian, Lusitanian (Iberia), and general Ancient Near Eastern pantheons. All have excellent resource channels and are open to discuss them or helping you look for them. So an online group that provides souces is a good way to start. Blogs that give sources in their posts or on "master lists" are another good way to find resources. And the sources given by Wikipedia can be a helpful starting point as well.

I will eventually get my resource page fully functional and maybe work on posts dedicated to this because I want it to be apart of my blog but thats a project for another day.

Some ideas for now:

Internet Archive— this has a plethora of articles and books available all you need is an account and you can borrow anything for an hour at a time. Text Archive & Open Library

JSTOR— offers 100 free articles per month. It also has an open access portion.

Academia.edu— while this is becoming more paywall-y (I think) it's still a great way to find information

Met Museums Catalogue of books with full text

The Directory of Open Accsess Journals and Articles

Libby app— If you have a library card it will give you accsess to any of its online materials so you can see it at home. I beleive it also gives accsess to anywhere your library card can be used (as many libraries are in consortiums)

Google Scholar— while it won't give you access to all the sources it can help you find them. Then you can go on the hunt to see where they are, such as the above locations. I gave the search tips page, click upper right "search scholar" to use or go to scholar.google.com. books.google.com can also be used if you are specifically looking for books.

🛒 Haikyuu!! characters grocery shopping: Karasuno

The team was about to head out to a 3-day training camp. Since the coach didn't want to waste any time during the camp, everyone decided to do all the grocery shopping before getting on the bus.

Daichi was busy with organisational work together with coach Ukai and teacher Takeda. Kiyoko and Yachi were taking care of the luggage and the equipment so they left you, the newest manager of Karasuno, to go shopping with the team. You didn't think it was a big deal so you gladly agreed to do it. But Daichi, knowing damn well his teammates, gave you a speech:

'Y/n don't let them fool you!! They are very sly, mischievous and really a lot to handle!! Are you sure, you're going to be okay?'

'Yes of course! You don't need to worry!'

Suga overheard your conversation and asked Daichi why wasn't he the one in charge.

'Because you always get too carried away.'

-at the store-

'Okay guys we need to be super fast! If we all split the list and everyone gets a thing we'll be done in no time!' As soon as you said that Noya and Tanaka ran into the store searching for candy and snacks.

Tsukishima found a massage chair. When you saw him sitting and putting on his headphones you knew that he wouldn't be of much help.

Hinata went straight to the game counter where you can actually try the games out. 'WOW THEY HAVE IT!! Kenma and I have been looking for this game since forever!! Hey, Kageyama let's play together!'

'No, thanks.. aren't you gonna get something to eat?'

'No, I'll eat whatever they buy. I'll stay here and play.'

Hinata ended up playing against a random kid, who claimed to be invincible and of course Hinata wanted to prove him wrong.

You and Suga were together with the shopping cart trying to follow the list.

'Okay we have enough bread. Next thing on the list is...carrots. Where are they though?'

'They are over there, y/n. Go and get that and I'll go look for fish.'

You went to where Suga told you and you realised this was one of his pranks. 'Oh not again... SUGA CAN YOU PLEASE STOP THAT! I'm at the plants section..'

The whole time he's been telling you to go get something which wasn't there and you were already exhausted.

Asahi was at the counter with bio food. He lectured Yamaguchi, Tanaka and Nishinoya on how different and much better bio products are. Yamaguchi was amazed at how much Asahi knew and was listening with interest. He even took some notes on his phone. Noya and Tanaka eventually got bored and decided to look at the toys.

On their way they saw you apologising to a random guy.

'I'm so sorry I pushed you with the cart!'

'No, don't worry! I'm the one who wasn't paying attention.'

Noya and Tanaka ran to both of you screaming. 'Y/N ARE YOU OKAY??'

Tanaka looked the poor guy in the eyes and said 'What did you do to her huh? Are you looking for trouble boy?'

The guy was so scared at that point that Ennoshita had to come to the rescue. He pulled Noya and Tanaka out of the store and made them sit on the bench at the entrance. 'You're also not getting any candy!'

'BUT-'

'NO! You need to learn that your reckless actions have consequences!'

Suga was supposed to get spaghetti souce but it has been a while since you last saw him so you decided to call him.

'Suga where are you?'

'I'm at soup.'

'What do you mean you're at soup!?'

'I MEAN I'M AT SOUP!' Suga said laughing, at which you calmly replied 'Suga please.. I cannot take this anymore... '

Once you hung up the phone you turned aroud and saw Kageyama putting 6 big cartons of milk in the shopping cart.

'Um.. Kageyama I don't think the team will need that much milk..'

'Oh no.. this is for me.'

Luckily Kinoshita and Narita, being the only sane ones, helped you finish with the shopping. You were so grateful to have them that you actually started crying.

'Oh they are coming!' said Ennoshita 'Okay guys your punishment is over, we can go now.'

'I told you I can beat you! Let's play again some time!' happily said Hinata to the little kid while waving for a goodbye.

Asahi and Yamaguchi were still talking about bio food and Sugawara was planning the next prank on you.

Once you got to the bus you went straight to Daichi and hugged him so tight that he couldn't breathe.

'Daichi please don't EVER leave me alone with them!! I cannot do this anymore!! They are too much!! PLEASE!!!'

Daichi was trying to calm you down and apologised for making you go through all of this.

'YEY! TRAINING CAMP HERE WE GO' shouted Hinata and Noya.

Yamaguchi looked around in confusion 'Wait.. where is Tsuki?'

'OH MY GOD NO!'

Tsukishima had fallen asleep on the massage chair and you all totally forgot about him.

Hey, just wanted to point out that one of the apps on that post, Archive Track Reader, has no ads, subscriptions or donation option, doesn't require login, & has open souce code..It has easy text resizing for tablets and multiple blacklist functions not available on the ao3 mobile site which makes it super useful if you want to browse fic but don't want to see certain things. Getting this app pulled has accomplished nothing other than making it harder for some people to read fic.

Well, I wasn’t involved in getting that app pulled, so I’m not sure why you’ve felt the need to share this with me. The issue at hand that most of us, including myself, were clearly referencing and calling out was the Pocket Reader app that did in fact monetize Ao3′s fanfic, and it’s already been explained why. I’m not sure why you feel that any of what you mentioned can’t be accomplished with other apps. There are a number of filter add-ons for most browsers, for example. You can subscribe to Ao3 authors or works to find out when they’re updated. I’m sorry if an app you enjoy has been pulled or caught up in this, but instead of blaming content creators for being understandably upset that their work is being monetized, blame the people who made the Pocket Reader and CreepyPasta/etc. apps and are endangering Ao3 and profiting from fanfiction writers.
