When Soichiro inhales, L doesn’t have the heart to tell him to hold it. Light has made him soft.

He did, get his son back, that is. Fifty some odd days of confinement, and an acting stunt later—that would cause unknowable psychological damage down the road. A case that kept him from his family more hours out of the week than with them. He deserved that deep inhale. Soichiro had earned that forty seconds of hope that it could be all over.

Everyone is owed a break.

But L doesn’t grant himself that same kindness. He can’t. Because his true job has only just begun.

Light transformed in that solitary cell. Proof! He was a shape shifter, and L had it on camera (that strange moment where Light jolted from living corpse to a fawn in bondage). Something supernatural was at play.

So.

Ninety days of interrogative watch, under lock and chain. L found exactly what he’d been told he’d find: an extraordinary student. Ambition incarnate. Honour bound,

and bound by L.

His findings were thus:

Light was everything everyone said. There was no charade or play act, no mask to peel back. He really did have a near religious commitment to his duties. A self-care regimen that would rival Amane-san’s. He gave all people of all places a stage to feel seen, their fifteen minutes of fame observed with respect and compassion.

But,

He got moody, easily. Only after the world clocked-out for the day, of course. When L’s strangeness really waned on him. That was a secret he only shared with L. Not a shock there. The apple on the teacher’s desk has no choice but to succumb to rot eventually.

And succumb it did.

Light, ambitious little thing, liked to play referee and star player simultaneously. Liked to ask if it felt too good, too big, too much. He liked to pad that ego, thoroughly fattened up by everyone except L.

But L liked to play rough, and that is when Kira came out to play.

L liked it best when the room got thick with breath and the sheets got sticky like melted sugar. He liked to expedite the rot; make Light’s face run as red as his cockhead, just as wet.

He would coax Kira out by force, up to the knuckle, until Light’s throat was speckled purple and his pride was thoroughly beaten to a pulp. So many filthy, brutal admissions that confirmed this little hellion’s mean streak, but would not hold up in a court of law.

Yes, there Kira was. Caged. L’s pet godling. A clever prisoner that would break free one day. A day he did not look forward to.

If only that shapeshifter could see the future, and tell them both to avoid the helicopter.
