Are the lines on your drawings stylistic choices or are they measurement/guiding lines? Either way, they are cool, but just wondered. I dont understand drawing at all, might as well be a magic spell to me. I was looking at the pencil (?) sketch of Malkin with the cheesecutter hat on.
i, uh, definitely did not google 'cheesecutter hat' until after i saved out these images. :/ sorry about that. if you'd like the other one broken down, i can do that too lol. my reading comprehension when im tired is kinda lazy i just saw 'cheese' and imediately thought 'omelette'. SO here's the 1) initial sketch, 2) 'clean' sketch, and 3) final lines for the omelette boy drawing instead:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also i have had a cumulative of about 9 ish hrs of sleep total for the past two days so keep that in mind for if this explanation makes no sense, its not my fault. :( anyway! the way i draw definitely has changed over the years but currently im really trying to focus on the line i "see" rather than the one that is actually "there". i've been applying this to my writing for years (story vs happening truth) and you know it never occurred to me that i could do it in my drawings too till like...a few years ago. in general these lines seem to form the planes of the subject. if you google 'stanford bunny' you can find an easy example of a 3D surface turned into triangles. I do this too - see things in relative triangle proportions, except i've been doing it long before i knew how computers worked. i cant begin to tell you how long d*sney and cartooning's obsession with round building blocks of anatomical structure fucked with my brain until i finally decided i could cast that teaching aside completely.
ANYWAY sorry off subject again. so we have these sketchy under lines, and usually as im trying to find the proportions and form of the subject these lines end up being where the light/shadow hits. here i saved out the 1) 'flat colors', 2) the 'light', and 3) the 'shadow' parts on their own (i lightened the background for the 'shadow' so its easier to see):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the light is like four or five 'overlay' layers of pale yellow/orange. you can see how each of these layers follow one of those sketchy lines i did initially. and the same with the shadow but instead its a dark red color set to 'multiply' for each layer. and when you combine everything together you get:
Tumblr media
some bullshit :). anyway you know that anniversary edition of beauty and the beast that featured the version previewed to nyc audiences in 1990 with the glen ke*ne sketchy keyframe animation of the beast's transformation? i watched that - must have been sometime after i graduated college - and i felt robbed that THAT version was never presented as a final piece. the 'unclean' drawings had so much more life and movement and intensity to them. tldr i like the messy lines, i hate 'inking' with a passion (HATE. IT.), and when i finally allowed myself to stop giving a fuck drawing became way more interesting. but my art is shit and i will never be glen k*ane so i dont really feel like the best advocate for this "style". alas. there was this one artist on tumblr who i fucking loved whose sketches were SPECTACULAR but the asshole racists in the m*c*ha*nz*o fandom bullied her off tumblr and ive never been able to find her art anywhere else since. she was also very negative about her 'unclean' sketches and it made me so sad. there was also this other artist whose sketches were awe inspiring but all she drew was p*rn and well...we all know what happened on tumblr in december 2018.
also i 100% stole the lighting scheme from The Bear which is currently one of the most gorgeous shows on television right now in my opinion
Tumblr media
im really really sorry if this makes no sense, if im feeling motivated maybe i'll try again when my brain is fully functioning but with the actual 'cheesecutter hat' doodle ^_^

ART FOR MY HORROR FIC! The cropping and focus is a bit off but my pajamas look cool and I’m too lazy to bother w/ positioning.
Quick note that I’m not super experienced w/ drawing faces -- hence why tubbo has none lol -- nor am I great w/ body proportions. i wrote on here that im a shit artist which i dont think is true nor good to say BUT i am still learning! I used a ref to try n get the general body shape right but im aware i kinda fucked up the arms so. Just know im working on that and that im hoping 2 practice more w/ anatomy :]
also tubbo isn’t the protagonist though he’s one of the main characters, tommy’s technically the protagonist but i didn’t want to bother with drawing blonde hair considering i have no markers nor any good colored pencils for it. on that note the tree at the bottom was meant to be art of younger Tubbo in this AU, who did have blonde and slightly longer hair, but the colors didn’t work so I covered it up with the tree.
reblogs appreciated! everything below this is the ID!
[start ID: photo of a sketchbook, with a computer and flowery pajama pants out of frame. at the top of the sketchbook there is brown marker print saying, “UNTITLED HORROR AU - C!TUBBO DESIGNS”. underneath it in teal it says, smaller, “by @nightmare-rivulets, 05/21/22″. Beside the writing is a drawing of a pond, with a brown edge to the dark teal-blue water, and some rocks with dead ferns coming out. above it says, “my attempt at the pond”. Below is a sketch of tall brown evergreen trees with a shadowing figure standing between them, captioned, “this isn’t Tubbo lol”. Below is a snail drawing captioned, “SORRY I’M A TUBBLING AND I’M SHIT AT ART. LIKE ITS MY FAULT.” under that is a messy drawing of a tree withh teal leaves, and a small drawing of Tubbo’s face. he has a small scar on his jaw and short brown hair with bangs, but otherwise no facial features.
The main drawing is a full body reference, with the lower half of the calves cut off, of Tubbo. he is wearing a green and turquoise hoodie with a dinosaur and some circles on it, and jeans that are covered in dirt. under his hoodie is a simple white t-shirt that looks a little dirty. His hair is the same as the aforementioned doodle, but the scar continues down to his collarbone. There are no facial features. Beside him are swatches of the color palette, mainly brown and green. At the top there’s a quote saying, “Three, Tubbo refuses to tell Tommy where he’s from. (Ch. 1)”. Below that it says “TUBBO” and then has three bullet points: “ignore height i fucking suck at that”, “lower half carries more weight, so more like [drawing of pear-like shape] shape!”, “why does he fucking. look like frisk???” end ID]

First off, I'm sorry people have been pressuring you over requests, but also the one trick pony tag on you r post made me smile after s long day so I hope you're feeling better after the rant x I was wondering if yous fancy (you dont have too) writing steve/reader fix of him sketching her in the garden when shes concentrated on something maybe fluffy and cute and stuff? Totally up to you babe x
Note: Aw babe 💕💕I’m glad the one trick pony thing made you smile!!! I did feel better after that rant!! Sometimes getting shit out helps more than anything else. I hope you enjoy this🥰
Warnings: pregnant!reader, overprotective!Steve, fluffiness
Blue eyes lifted from the sketch book in his lap. His brows drew together softly as he studied your features, firm and concentrated on the daisies.
Steve sat on a bench in the garden behind your home in upstate New York. One ankle was crossed over his knee and the sketch book rested in his lap. He held a pencil in his hand, tapping the eraser against the book.
You were sitting on a bucket in the garden, trying to figure out why your daisies were looking so sad. You were doing your best to keep yourself busy. Your hips and lower back hurt. You needed to do something to take your mind off of the pain.
“I’m going to be so pissed if these die.” You muttered under your breath.
Your husband chuckled softly, his eyes leaving you to add some shadow beneath your jaw. Once he was satisfied with how your jaw was turning out, he looked back up to you. You were nowhere in sight.
Slightly alarmed that you had disappeared without him knowing, he uncrossed his legs and sat up.
“Y/N?” He turned his head, carefully gazing over the garden.
“Over here, Steve.” Your hand came from behind a bright pink azalea bush.
He stood up, holding his sketch book and pencil in one hand as he moved to make sure you were okay.
He found you on your knees bent over, messing with the weeds growing beneath the bush.
“Babe, I told you I’d get those later.” He knelt down beside you, placing the sketch book to the side. “You don’t need to be on your knees.”
“I’m pregnant, Steve, not disabled.” You told him.
“Yes, but the doctor said not to do anything too strenuous.” He put his hand on your back. You sat back, your hands holding your stomach. “What happened to your daisies?”
“I’m taking a break from them so I can figure out what’s wrong. Ya know, taking a step back to see the bigger picture.”
“You aren’t looking at the picture. You’re messing with the weeds - which I said me or Buck would do later.”
“Steve, I love you but go back to your bench.” You gave him a smile and leaned over to kiss him. “Finish whatever doodle you were doing and when you’re finished, I’ll quit messing.”
You winced as the pain in your hips shifted. His brows drew together in concern.
“I’m fine.” You insisted, shaking your head.
“You drive me crazy.” His hand slipped around your neck so he could kiss your forehead. “You’re so stubborn.”
“So are you.”
He laughed softly.
“Guess that means we’re in trouble when the baby comes.” His hand left your neck to tenderly rub your stomach.
You held his gaze, smiling at him.
“You should go inside, take a little break. You’re hurting.”
“You’re distracting me.” You started to stand up. Steve gave you his arm, not wanting to push you to stand quicker than you were ready to. You used his arm for leverage, gripping tightly as you heaved yourself to your feet. Being nine months pregnant was not easy. “Shoo. Go back to your seat.”
“Be careful and I won’t have to leave my seat.” He teased, kissing your temple before he returned to the bench.
“What are we gonna do with him, baby?” You spoke under your breath to the unborn baby inside of you.
Steve smiled softly, looking down at the sketch of you sitting on the bucket by the daisies. It was nearly done, he just had a few finishing touches to do.
As you started to hum to keep yourself occupied, Steve finished up the drawing. He was adding the last bit of detail to your messy hair when you gasped.
Immediately, he looked up and almost jumped to his feet, afraid something had happened. You were sitting on the bucket, holding your stomach as you looked down to the ground in front of yourself. The dirt appeared wet between your legs.
You turned your head to look at Steve.
“The baby’s coming.”

storyline : ariya ying,22 is a college student studying fashion and has been dating jackson wang,23 for 3 years.
genre: soft , emotional
< song sync : around by NIKI >
( ill hopefully be doing this to most of the chapters , songs that i think go well with story or the mood. maybe even try listening to it while reading!)
the amount of assignments kept piling up , ariyas apt was messy , she stayed up all night on her laptop , her sleeping schedule was wrong , she wasnt eating properly , she barely checked her phone , her notifications were full of jacksons miss calls and texts from a day ago and that day. everything went downhill for her. she had to sketch 4 outfits and do 4 paragraphs per outfit on explaining about it. all due on 1 week. stress was an understatement to her.
5:25 p.m
"one outfit , down. done." she let out a big sigh. ariya took a look around her apt. she didnt realise how messy it was. her stomach was grumbling. she just ignored it and continued to sketch her next dress. by then it was already 7pm and she finished sketching. now she was on her couch typing on her keyboard. her back felt sore and eyes felt so tired from not getting any sleep last night.
she heard an aggressive knock on her door. it startled her a bit. she got up and her back felt so pain. she walked up to the door and opened it.
it was jackson. he had a worried look on his face.
"ariya!" he looked like he was out of breath and pulled her into a tight hug.
"jackson? are you okay baby?" she says hugging him back. his warmth made ariya feel alive again.
"am i okay? are you okay?? why werent u answering my calls or texting me back??" he let go of ariya looking at her with such a worried look.
"what? what do you mean?" ariya said confused as she walked inside to go look for her phone.
jackson closed the door behind him. he turned on the lights and noticed the apartment was messy. but he also noticed that ariya looked really tired and pale. she found her phone.
"oh my god. jackson." she looked at her phone and had her hand on her head. jackson walked up to her sitting down on her couch.
"im so sorry babe , i didnt even know." she looked down. jackson was already concerned. he saw sketchbooks , pencils , papers scattered everywhere on the coffee table. he put things together in his head and it all clicked.
"hey, why didnt you tell me you had a lot of assignments." he kneeled down infront her holding her hand. he said it in such a soft tone that would only come out when hes talking to ariya.
"i dont know , i couldnt think properly" ariya responded, she sounded so exhausted.
"whats wrong? you look so tired." he asked her in the same tone looking at her with such sad eyes. his hand was cupping her cheek and the other was still holding her hand.
ariya looked at him , her eyes were dark yet sparkling. it made her feel at ease looking at him with his big eyes and having his presence there. a weight had been lifted off ariyas shoulders. her eyes started to tear up but she was smiling softly looking at him. jackson noticed it.
ariya collapsed to the ground hugging jackson. she just started to cry her eyes out and cried so bad. jackson didnt say anything. he understood the feeling. jackson just hugged her back tightly rubbing her back comforting and calming her down.
ariya was crying her heart out in his arms , she couldnt breathe properly. her head was in the crook of his neck. jackson knows she gets easily stressed out and cries a lot when the stress hits her bad.
"im so stressed jackson." she mumbled as she cried
"i know baby." he continued to rub her back. having jackson rubbing her back really calms down ariya when shes feeling like this. jackson hates seeing a loved one like this , in so much stress and pain.
after a few minutes , ariya calms down and her crying stops.
she stayed there in his arms quietly.
"im sorry." she whispered
"hm? why."
"because i didnt tell you anything , thats not what girlfriends do huh." she mumbled rubbing the back of his neck.
"its okay , i just got so scared and worried. thats all." he comforted her slowly rubbing her head feeling her soft hair.
"do you feel better baby?" he looks at her laying her head on his shoulder.
"yeah." she let go of him. Jacksons shirt was wet from her tears. He didn't even care. they both looked at each other in the eyes. jackson felt sad seeing her like this. but glad that she's feeling better.
"do you want to talk it out?" he asks her tucking her hair behind her ear.
"i need a drive in your car." she said.
whenever either Jackson or ariya have a lot going on in their mind , a drive always makes them feel better while ranting their feelings to each other. it's kind of their thing.
"to the moon?" he says
"yes please." she said. jackson thought her tone was cute.
ariyas stomach suddenly grumbled.
"and maybe also somewhere to eat." Ariya said. both of them laughed.  ariyas smile made Jackson feel better.
He looked over at her sketches.
"did you sketch that?" he flipped thru the pages of her beautiful dress sketches.
"yeah i did." she smiled lightly
"why is my girlfriend so talented though??" he looks at her with his puppy eyes.
ariya pushes him lightly chuckling.
making Jackson laugh.
the mood lighten by their laughs and jokes.
"okay , come on! let's go get you something to eat." he helps ariya get up.
Ariya grabs her bag and puts her phone and keys in it. jackson went to the kitchen to get her some water.
"drink some water." he gave her a cup of water. she drank half of it and gave the rest to jackson to drink.
jackson opens the door for her and they both walk out. he held her hand as they walked the halls.
"hey." he stops while walking.
"hm?"
"make sure you don't do that again okay? it made me really worried. tell me when your sad , stressed , happy , sleepy ,, anything. Im always here." he said cupping her face with both of his hands.
"i promise , i will never do that again. ill tell you everything next time. your my go to. okay?" she smiled looking at him with such love. knowing that jackson is hers.
"okay." he grinned happily and he leaned in for a kiss. ariya kissed him back. both of them felt at ease and in love.
"i love you." he said to her sincerely.
"i love you too."

pairing: reader x minghao
genre: fluff
word count: 1,468
sypnosis: meeting minghao in the past leading to the start of a new life.
theres a marrige proposal here and y/n is an artist lmao. Honestly not my fave but all work is good bc I still managed to write something I dont totally cringe at sorry I dont title my work orz
-
You remember the day you met Minghao. You came to Seoul for an exchange program from your university and as your senior year thesis you held an art show. Work in all different sorts if media all revolving one central theme. Your self discovery. Who were you as a person, the good and bad.
Your thesis was held in a small studio place and the general public was encouraged to take a look. You remember what it was like hanging up posters and trying to get people to take one for themselves. You had never done anything like that but sometimes you meet people who were interesting and you'd sketch them up real quick if they promised to show up.
Minghao was one of those people. It was nearing sundown and you were ready to head back to your dorm but had an unexplainable urge to get one more person to promise to visit your show. That's when you saw two men walking with other, one with a camera and that's when you knew you could definitely get them to come. Shyly walking up to them you interrupted their little photoshoot were having between themselves.
"Sorry to bother you two but I was wondering if I could just, sketch a portrait for you two real quick in exchange for a favor" The taller men of the two immediately started smiling at you.
"What's the favor and where should we sit for the portrait!" You had them sit down on a bench nearby and quickly went about sketching their image.
"You see, I have an art show coming up, and the more people that go, the better I look! So I was wondering if you or just one of you really could show up and just take a look at my work?" You spoke to them without really looking them in the eyes as you were busy trying to capture their image.
"What kind of art do you do?" Finally the other of the two finally spoke. He had a weirdly mysterious vibe from the get go especially since he didn't speak to you from the start. He had on a simple yet stylish track suit on and dark hair that really contrasted against his fair skin. He seemed really intrigued in knowing what it was you'd answer.
"All kinds of work really, I work in tons of different media but I love focusing on myself and emotions. Emotions are such an interesting thing to try and visualize but I like the challenge. I'm almost done here so it won't be much longer and then you two can leave!"
The two turned towards each other and gave a sort of approving look to one another over your answer which made you smile. Although they didn't look it at first that fact that one of them asked about your work shows they at least have a good appreciation for art. You ended up signing their portrait and handing it to them along with a clean piece of paper. That was just to keep the graphite from smudging.
"Now that that's done, I hope I can see you two again at my art show! I'll give you this flyer and I'll even write down my personal number for if you two get lost or something. I'll appreciate it if you two just swing by, so please think about it!" You put away your pencil and sketchbook and gave them a smile.
"Yeah yeah. We might just go, I don't think we have anything scheduled that day!" The taller boy smiled at you "Oh! By the way, my name is Mingyu"
"And my name in Minghao"
"Nice to meet you two! I had fun drawing you two, my name is y/n. Hope to see you two soon, stay safe"
Now initially you didn't think much of those two. They were just another pair of really attractive people you met today. Though you really wanted them to show up for some reason.
Fast forward to the day if your show, you're exhausted and caffeinated beyond space. The anxiety you were feeling was probably a good reason as to why you shouldn't have drank so much coffee. But here you were, an anxious jittery mess. You had to pull yourself together as much as possible so that you could great visitors when they come in. If people would even show up.
Looking up at a portrait of yourself looking confident and somewhat menacing you sighed.
"Alright y/n, you've had plenty of art shows before. Even though this is your senior thesis, you'll do just as good as your previous shows. Nothing to fear"
The moment you unlock the studios doors you're met with so much uneasy you feel weak in the knees and on the verge of passing out. Why were you so nervous? You're so occupied in your mind with worries that you don't even notice when people start trickling in. You had to get it together.
"Are you alright?" You look up to see Minghao, a pleasant surprise in all honesty.
"Oh yeah. Yeah, I'm fine just a little stressed. I'm glad to see you came though!" He smiled softly at you and for some reason you felt a bit at ease. "I can give you a sort of tour of my pieces if you'd like?"
"I'd love that" He continued smiling at you and you couldn't understand but the more he looked at you that way, the better you felt better about the entire situation.
You walked with him showing him your work and explaining the meanings and feelings. It brought you so much joy because he wasn't viewing your work to critique it as your professors would be soon. He looked at each piece intently and said 'this is my favorite' to every piece you showed him.
"Your work is amazing y/n" Minghao scanned every inch of the studio and sighed to himself. It didn't sound bored. It didn't even sound as if itd lead to an awkward silence. "Can we talk more? Not here but like, a date or something?"
That initially caught you off guard. At the moment you were just happy how intrigued he was about your work. Most people (men) would dismiss your work or make you feel less than about it. And just as suddenly as he asked you responded in a way that even surprised you.
"Yeah, that'd be great. I'd love to" You smiled at him and that was that.
That was about two years ago now. Minghao became one of the most important people to enter your life. Being an artist himself he would always confide in you when showing you his work. You would show him yours and you had nothing but support for each other.
It was just another day in your small little studio when Minghao visited during his time out to the convenience store. This wasn't an out of character for him to do. He'd do this quite often and you loved the times where he would find a way to see you during the day during his busy days. What you did find odd though was the fact that he barged in painting, a bit sweaty, and looking disheveled.
"Mingha-"
"Y/n... it's felt like an eternity since I met you. The person you are is more beautiful than any piece of art I've seen in my life"
You were speechless, Minghao often told you he loved you but this felt different and so sudden. What's worse is that you're a mess, messy hair, paint covered smock and dirty paint covered hands.
"Hao I-"
"Please let me finish. I love you y/n, I want to paint the world with you. Will you marry me?"
Complete and utter shock. You felt weak in the knees and the world felt as if it was spinning. Even though you know the answer you couldn't help but feel overwhelmed. You looked at him and he seemed anxious, looking at you so longingly that that brought you back to your senses.
"Minghao I-" You felt the tears starting to fill your eyes as Minghao took a box from his pocket and presented you with a ring. It was stunning. Nothing flashy, it was simple and more than enough. "Of course I will!"
Minghao pulled you into a tight embrace, laughing and if you swore you could feel a few tears from him too. But those could've been yours. Finally he pulled away and placed the ring on your finger. Minghao made everything in your life better. The idea that not too far into the future you would be able to call him your husband, flooded you with happiness. With Minghao in your life. Everything will fall into place.

do you have any tips on how to draw the sides of a face? im good at doing eyes nose and lips but i cant do the jawline for the life of me...
i dont even know how I do it fam, but I will try to help.
first things first, study your subject, or maybe think of your oc. Do they have a skinny face, or is it slightly pudgier? how long are their ears? ( this is mostly for side views, because of the fact that the jaw starts around the point the bottom of the ears connect.)
Ima just, show you some steps of mine okAy.
1, sketch it. make it as messy as possible, you do not have to get it right on the first try okay thats Bull. if anyone says that, they’re lying.
Tumblr media
2, get like, a more refined sketch using your messy one okay. is their face long or short? is their jaw a square or a circle? maybe a diamond?
Tumblr media
3, Jaws do not have points, so make sure to round them out. (For example, taehyung has a diamond jaw, but he has soft features.)
Tumblr media
Most of the time, the two sides are symmetrical. So if you use digital, go and use copy-and-paste. its not cheating. The best thing you can do if you draw traditionally is to just, repeat drawing jaws over and over. Sketch using a colored pencil that is a light color. (Oranges and pinks work best over blues or yellows. [and always draw lightly])
4. Remember that wherever the ear ends, is where the jaw begins.

A PSA: protip from an artist to fanfic writers
you can always tell when a fanfic writer has never met or even seen an artist irl ever bc they ALWAYS. WITHOUT A FAIL. will have their artist character drawing with charcoal like casually and it feels kinda like a copout like yes i know there are charcoal artists out there but listen,,,, 95% of artists who like just draw on sketchbooks bc they love drawing actually hate charcoal charcoal is one of the most impractical mediums for sketching and it gets everywhere and it smudges all over ur sketchbook pages and everything else in your life forever so like really take into account what the profile of the character as an artist is and more often than not you'll find yourself realizing that no, no matter how lyrically you think the image of charcoal sketching would work, your character would not find it practical/worth the mess to carry around one or more charcoal sticks then have it MARK UP ALL THEIR EARTHY POSSESSIONS (sorry im really passionate abt this) just for sketching also PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF BUMBLEBEES dont use it as a synonym for graphite ok just dont just say graphite, say they were using a pencil i promise you itll feel better. ⚫️here's some nice alternatives to charcoal if u like a Messy Artist™feel to things + how to match them to your character based on my experiences w artists that use these mediums/myself: → ink has a similar edge of "fingertips smudged in black probably forever" but it's simpler to carry even though it also has that risk of staining everything you love, depending on how its used (as in, will they carry around a glass bottle of jett black ink and a brush in their bag/pocket or just have it in different kinds of pens?) + artist who use ink usually like a very finished crisp look to their work and are therefor usually quite methodical and have (or strive to have) steady hands even with fluid lines there's intent to whats going on. these artists usually sketch first (and rarely in graphite, usually blue or red colored pencil) so keep that in mind too. rarely will you see someone just straight up taking a brush pen to paper with no layout and if they do they have a very clear image in mind and outstanding control and understanding of where everything should go and how and where. →watercolor is less messy but it takes a bit more of a setup bc you need water and usually a palette. i use it quite a bit myself on my sketchbook and what i do is i just ask for/get glasses of water anywhere i go, get my paints and whatever scrap of paper to mix them on and im ready bc all i care about is my finished product and i usually draw in places where water is easily accessible (like parks w water fountains/stores w water fountains nearby, coffee shops, school, etc) but a lot of artists who have it as their *main* medium and have developed more practical setups over the years tend to have lil travel palettes that are tiny and easy to pack as well as waterbrushes and water bottles to fill them with all in all not too hard to carry around with minimal incident. people with watercolor as a main medium are usually more laid back and like things to look soft and dreamy (can be REALLY picky about paper tho) and generally just strive for happiness and like pretty things (if yr person is painting a landscape, its probably in watercolor since it dries fairly quickly and like i said isnt too hard to carry) →acrylic artists uhh... idk any other artists who paint w acrylic on their sketchbook so ill just speak for them ok WE JUST WANT THINGS TO LOOK GOOD OK WE WILL SUFFER FOR IT WE DONT CARE its a bit of a lot to carry depending on how many colors ur tryna have to mix but u gotta have at least ur 3 primaries and a black and a white (some artists work w yellow cyan and magenta but ppl swear by yellow ultramarine and red so idk ycm shows better online or if ur printing it out so it works for me bc i like my colors really really bright) and ur brushes so ye. + like i said folks who work with acrylic have a very specific look and feel they're going for and they dive headfirst into it, if something goes wrong, acrylic is usually quite opaque so it can be easily layered over once its dry, blending usually comes from mixing dif midtones so if thats part of their style they're probably quite patient/willing to sacrifice their patience for a good end product. some artists will mix their colors themselves bc they like the process or because they want very specific shades and those are the methodical fuckers who'll die for things to look the way they gotta look and also just really like the process (be it because it relaxes them or makes them think or whatever BUILD ON THAT W UR CHARACTER) and some just get premixed bottles of the colors they want and those are really focused on efficiency and laying paint down wherever they're painting and getting it done (so not so much the process but the act of painting or even just having art made) but i cant really speak for those too much then again thats between you and ur character →IF YOUR CHARACTER WORKS WITH COLORED PENCILS AS THEIR MAIN MEDIUM THEY'RE A WELL OF PATIENCE AND DESERVE TO BE CANONIZED. fairly easy to carry i mean i own like 100 of them and i just carry one big pencil case w them in so ye whats really tiresome is the process since u gotta go color for color and cant really cover too wide a surface w the pencil tip ever + usually daydreamers and, honestly, dayDREAMS, lovely patient folk who just really like color and enjoy the introspectiveness and calm of coloring. explore those dudes, they deserve it SUMMARY: TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE MEDIUM YOUR ARTIST USES. THINK ABOUT STYLE. DONT JUST HAVE YOUR PAINTED MAKE ABSTRACT ART BC YOU CANT BE BOTHERED TO THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO DO WITH PAINT. IF UR NOT GONNA MAKE IT PART OF UR CHARACTER STUDY WHAT THEY MAKE ART WITH AND HOW AND WHAT ABOUT UR MISSING OUT MAN!!!!!! I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!! please give your artist characters the depth they deserve and remember us artists build half of ourselves because, through and around our art so to make that just a title of ours is kind of a disservice, your artist character wouldnt want that. visual artists feel free to add on to this!!

im cryin how do you draw hair so well like whenever i try it looks So Bad and Unnatural and like forget curly hair, Everyone Is A Sheep Now I Dont Make The Rules bc they just have fuckin clouds on their heads and i!! dont know where to start to try and fix that!!! and i like how u draw hair a lot
Well, thanks! I like drawing hair, so I’m glad it looks good.
Idk if you’re really looking for advice on drawing hair or if you’re just venting, but uh here goes.
REFERENCES!!! google pictures of ppl’s hair, long hair! short hair! curly poofy or thin straight hair! Of course u don’t need to copy the hair exactly, but it can give you a rough guideline of where to draw lines or how to volume, yknow. Sometimes i use other ppl’s drawing as reference too, but it’s better to use real life imgs because those don’t have like, an artistic touch, yknow.
i find with curly hair esp it’s easy to get caught up in all the curls and floof, yeah? so sometimes i start off with the hairline and then draw a rough outline of how much volume i need, then i fill in the details. With long, flowy hair, try not to get caught up on small details or making sure every line is perfect. smol, sketchy lines make an already messy sketch look messier.
Also don’t be afraid to make mistakes in ur drawing! u can always erase and improve on a line (if ur using pencil or digital haha maybe not so much for inking). THERE’S ALSO NOTHING WRONG WITH BIG FLOOFY CLOUDS ON PPL’S HEAD so don’t be ashamed of that. Of course, if you’re not looking for that, that’s ok too! just practice drawing other styles with a reference a lot and sooner or later you’ll get it! I believe in you.
I don’t really know the specific issues you’re having, so idk if this will even help, I’m sorry (also sorry i didn’t like, draw any examples). And I know it’s daunting when people just say “PRACTICE” so i hope that some of my “advice” helps. But! Idk who you are nonnie, but I believe everyone has the potential to be a great artist, so I BELIEVE IN YOU, and DON’T GIVE UP!

I have never made a vid of myself doing anything and I dont really have the time to make that happen rn. Hopefully once im on holidays i can start doing some SIC STREAMS again. Maybe one of those can be actually properly scheduled and can be me on mic going step by step on how I do a full illustration.
But for now, I can do a step by step annotated post?? I happen to be at the lining stage of the cover for chapter 11, so why not force myself to actually do that via this ask lmao.
Unfortunately that means our subject will be Avaric.
First Thing: I draw exclusively on photoshop (CS6), and almost all of my lines are done with the stumpy pencil brush. I use version 2, which is for cs5+ i think?? while there is a version 1 that works on earlier versions of photoshop.

^ free and super easy 2 get if you want it. It’s a good brush but its not like SUPER GREAT, I just use it so much bc ive gotten so used to it. There are plenty of good brushes, and if you’re willing to spend a little money Kyle T Webster has gr8 brushes for pretty much anything.
SO. First thing is my sketch - its more or less messy depending on how big what im sketching is within the composition. (its messier if its smaller.) If its messy enough ill do a second sketch, but for this our sketch is about clear enough.
Tumblr media
I usually make my sketches red or blue, then slower the opacity to about 30% or under. I like to draw my lines initially in dark red/blue/whatevs instead of black because black is too jarring on my eye for some reason? Anyway.
THE LINING PROCESS ITSELF. First we do all our main lines - lines that aren’t detail lines. Main lines should be thicker than detail lines (or have all the lines be equally Thin.) consistently thick lines only work for less detail styles and will crowd an illustration.
Tumblr media
First stage of lines. Now deets. I bump down my brush like 3 - 10 px depending on how big the resolution of the canvas is.
Tumblr media
Detail lines. This is pretty much good to go for colouring. I realise I didnt pick the best example since this wont have any shading or solid black parts, but shading kind of needs a post of its own, so... sorry kids
anyway not a vid but hope this was helpful? ya
