Cissamione - 'Lost Voice'

~140 words

When Hermione stepped through the floo to Narcissa’s cottage, the stylish older witch didn’t await her at the other side as usual. Nor sat any teacups, saucers or petit fours on the coffee table.

“Narcissa?” She called out into the empty room.

The scuff of loose slippers was the only indication that anyone was home at all. Meekly, Narcissa shuffled into the living room, not looking her lavish self.

“Are you alright?” Hermione asked, rather stupidly.

Narcissa shook her head, holding out a small piece of parchment. It read:

‘I’m rather unwell and I’ve lost my voice, would you allow me to try something?’

She answered, glancing between the note and the woman in front of her. “Of course, anything you need.”

Not a second later, a voice echoed through her mind, Narcissa’s voice, although Hermione knew she hadn’t spoken.

“Hello, darling.”

Wounds That Heal

written for comfy-vember 2024, day 26 prompts: confession--crying hug

“You shouldn’t have stepped in front of me, Eric.”

“But you were about to get hurt--"

“Well, you would have been hurt too if he hadn’t stopped his sword in time!” Cade exclaimed. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “I’m grateful you wanted to protect me, but it’ll be more trouble if you get hurt, especially because it was your brother who attacked me. He’s a prince too, remember? If you had gotten hurt, the blame would be on me, not him.”

Eric clenched his hands. “But—if you get wounded, you won’t heal….”

“We’ve had this conversation before, wounds do heal over time.”

“And what if you’d been wounded bad enough that you died? You wouldn’t heal then!” Eric snapped.

“Neither would you!”

Eric marched toward the library windows and smashed a fist into the glass, shattering it all around the window seat and the bushes outside. “I would heal, Cade,” Eric said. Grabbing a shard of glass, he sliced his palm open.

“Eric!” Cade cried, rushing towards the prince, but then he halted and stared. The gash on Eric’s hand was closing, sealing itself back together until you couldn’t even tell it had been there. Not a scar, not even a drop of blood remained. 

“I always heal. No matter how deep the wound is, no matter where you hurt me, it always heals,” Eric said quietly. “That’s why I rushed to protect you when my brother attacked. It doesn’t matter if I get hurt. But other people can die if they’re wounded and I…I don’t want to see anyone else die in front of me.”

For several long moments, Cade just stared at Eric’s hand, his mind churning. An ability to heal…was this magic? Was Eric not human at all but some other life form? Was this the reason for his disappearance? Had his first friend been the one to die in front of him? Glancing up at Eric’s face, however, Cade felt his questions fade away. Those things could wait.

Swiftly, he stepped towards the prince and wrapped him in a tight embrace. He could feel Eric shaking, felt the prince’s wet tears staining his tunic. He began rubbing the prince’s back slowly, just as he would when one of his younger siblings was upset or afraid. Eventually, Eric's sobs subsided.

Letting go of him, Cade held him at arm’s length.

“All right, Eric, I understand. I won’t try to stop you from protecting me, and I promise I won’t let myself die in front of you. But you have to let me protect you as well. Even if you can heal from any wound, it still hurts, doesn’t it? So promise me this, that if you do get hurt, you’ll come to me and we’ll deal with that pain together. Promise?” he said, releasing Eric and holding out a hand.

Slowly, Eric took Cade’s hand and whispered, “Promise.”
