Rant time about edgy magical girl content:

I honestly really hate grimdark magical girl content. Because it's never done in an interesting way, it always dumps in a ton of unnecessary fanservice (of what's usually middle schoolers), misery, and gore. It never tells a story in an interesting way and almost all of them have this vibe like they're so superior for telling a "deep story."

Like I'm sorry but I don't find your random incest, sexual assault of your female characters, or random deaths impressive or interesting. Killing off characters doesn't make your show suddenly good. Touching taboo topics doesn't leave me awed. Instead it feels like cheap tactics for writers to try and pretend they're creative while they mock and torture female characters.

Magical girl shows have been deep since the beginning. Yes they're girly, yes they're childish sometimes. But they're fun to consume and are made with love. Madoka is the only heavier magical girl show I'm fine with because the misery never feels excessive or mean spirited.

People don't take feminity seriously and it drives me insane because they'll write of sailor moon and ignore stories like the Mistress 9 arc, and then pretend like a show like magical g/rl s/te is somehow a gamechanger.
