I'm a huge Red Hood fan, and YES, EXACTLY THIS. I hate when people act like their favorite characters are always 100% right. Jason wants to murder people who he deems irredeemable, and he has a LOT of compelling arguments for it! Arguments that have been formed around a lifetime of experiences with trauma and being a victim, his stances are understandable and valid! BUT SO ARE BRUCE'S.
Bruce being like, "I don't want my kids to kill." Is not unreasonable. Him refusing to kill the joker is not unreasonable. Jason being hurt by that is not unreasonable. Their experiences influence their opinions which influences their characters which influences their choices!
Watering down their characters to "this one right, this one wrong," is not only a disservice, it's BORING. Multiple things can be true at once, and often times they contradict each other and that's life. Figuring out your own opinions and moral stances and how they mesh with others is the point. What is truth, what is morality, what is right? That's the question! That's what humanity has been grappling with from the beginning! Every time we think we've figured it out a new compelling argument comes around to shove us off our feet again.
There is no black and white. Good people do bad things, bad people do good things, it's wrong to kill people and justify it by saying "they deserve this" and it is also wrong to not protect, validate, and make victims feel safe. That's the point. I know it's uncomfortable, that's the point. The fun of fiction is that we can sit and grapple with it from a distance, instead of having to face the real life shadows right over our shoulders.
But it feeling safer in fiction is no excuse to make it EASY.
Actually I DO think Bruce is justified in being upset if his kids/associates kill people. I think he is justified in wanting to do everything in his power to make sure his children don’t kill anyone at all. There’s many things he’s unreasonable about but I do not think he is being unreasonable at all there.

The elections are so interesting to hear about as someone who wasnt their to watch them live because very little of it got clipped onto the main channels i used to get caught up (like their was videos for big events like people losing their electoral lives, tazercrafts imprisonment, el quackity losing his lives and then kidnapping dapper, and the eventual results of the elections) but i never got the full sense that i understood what was really going on in the same way i did for other arcs.
I think in part its a testament to everything you mentioned in regards to the poor execution of so much, but even more so a testament to the audiences reaction that so little fan content has been made from it.
Its a shame because i think theirs a lot of little important things for so many characters that happen during it. Like its the start of foolish’s fed arc, the beginning of cellbit returning to investigations, a huge part of baghera’s character arc, charlies arc with egg coming to a close, literally everything with max.
Im sure im missing stuff but the point im getting at is similar to what you said about how the debates arguably should have been the biggest part but ended up being l one of the least liked aspects of it, just on a bigger scale.
Because every time i think about the story as whole or try to explain it to someone it feels like one of the most pivotal parts of the story but its the one i dread most explaining just because its so difficult to do in a captivating way. It feels like it should be one of the most beloved arcs in the story that inspires people to make tons of fanworks, but it just falls short
i have the strongest love hate relationship with the qsmp elections because all it became in the end was probably the longest waste of time ive ever experienced. literally the arc in an anime you tell people to skip. the epitome of absolutely nothing of value or substance. even then while the actual parts youd expect to be great were lacking there were good moments like elq being planned to die by everyone and elq demanding a list of the people who orchestrated and knew about the explosion from maxo and in a display of utmost loyalty and love for his friends maxo wrote only his name. if that isnt cinema i dont quite know what is. bagheras constant fight to not conform to the rules set before them and her acts of anarchy to resist a single figure of governing power to control and dictate the lives of the islanders until her final breath. but all that sadly doesnt exempt it from being so poorly executed and so frustrating and so agonizing to sit through. everything that came from it was great but the actual process itself with the debates that were debatably meant to be the most entertaining part were horrible. i wont even get started on the actual community because dear god if that wasn’t the biggest foreshadowing of what purgatory would bring. truly the only way i can reason to myself to sit through watching the elections again is because i’d be a disservice to the efforts the creators made despite how taxing it was for them not to

Four years ago. I used to hate this one ship. Like I would go out of my way to just speak that opinion and fuck everyone else right? I was 14.
A year or so past and I grew out of that a bit. I realised that I did like one of those characters in the ship but I still preferred the other ship that was much more popular and canonly didn’t end up together. (I mean the guy died so what do you do).
Anyway… so I was 15 and realised that my behaviour wasn’t the best so I changed. I realised that the character I didn’t like was actually a nice character. I grew to appreciate her more and I started editing her and the guy. The ship that I didn’t like. People thought I was crazy… I sort of laughed it off because yeah, I suppose I was a bit crazy for editing them but I quietly enjoyed doing it.
I was 16 and I shifted away from ships. I started posting more about my favourite character who canonically was a massive bitch do said character I thought I hated. I still made my opinion clear but I never judged anyone for liking something that I didn’t.
I was 17 and I stopped posting for that fandom. I got into Harry Potter and Drarry and the fandom I was surrounded by was a lot calmer. I didn’t see much passive aggressive or toxic behaviour between shippers and that made me feel safe. I realised that a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
I was 17 and I joined the Marauders fandom. For a while it was much of the same. I was safe and I felt loved and I enjoyed it so much.
I’m 18. I still love the marauders fandom so fucking much. Everyone is so incredibly talented and so amazing and I cannot see myself ever abandoning this fandom.
I’m 18 and I got my first anonymous hate comment in my inbox. I was angry. I thought that I had moved on from getting hate for my opinion. I thought the marauders fandom was made up of a lot of mature and liked minded people. I was wrong.
I stuck to my guns. I shared my opinion even with the anonymous hate. I have an open mind. I understand where these haters were coming from. Hell, I even enjoyed the ship they were vouching for… it just so happened that I adored another ship more.
I’m a multi shipper. I always have been. I will try anything at least once and if I don’t like it, I’ll click off.
I would never leave a hate comment under someone’s hate and go off at them for shipping something that I don’t like. I’ve never done that. Even when I was 14 and hated this ship very publicly. I would never hate on someone’s art or edit or fic. I would just click away.
I will defend my favourite characters, my favourite ships until I physically cannot. I will not hate you for having a different opinion even if you hate on me first.
I have received death threats. I hope that no one ever experiences that feeling.
In conclusion, if you love something, that’s amazing. If you hate something, that’s cool too. If you hate on someone for loving something you hate, that’s not okay. Everyone deserves respect.
If someone loving something you hate makes you angry. I’m going to be so fucking for real, go outside, touch grass or taking a deep breath and scroll. Block tags. Block blogs/accounts.
Putting someone down is a form of bullying, repetitively or not. It’s bullying. Hating for no reason, I’ll go so far as to say that’s bullying.
You’re allowed to be angry, that’s your right. It’s not your right to hate one someone because of it.
Take it from someone who used to get angry for someone shipping something I hated.
I say from experience that it feels better to just let it go, to move on, to open ao3 and read the things you love, to open the tag you love and scroll through it. You’ll feel better, you’ll feel good.
I promise you. The best thing to do when you are angry is to turn away, focus your energy on something you love rather than something you hate.
I’m sorry to op for highjacking the post haha. My rant was rather inspired.
some of you cannot be the age you say you are because the way you react to fictional characters with such anger is jarring

I've seen many people cite how Billy's flaws are more rooted in reality, when Henry's are not. And I both agree and disagree. Henry's power is what adds the fantastical to him, the thing that definitely makes him feel like just a character in a story. Easy to separate him from reality.
But here's the thing, when you take away his powers, Henry is rooted in reality. He has all trademarks of a serial killer. We're shown how different he felt, his inability to fit in, to feel like most people do, we see how violent he is, killing animals as a child. And then he goes on to kill his own family with no remorse. It's a real thing that happens. Though yes, serial killers are far less common than a racist.
But the ease with which one is demonized and the other one loved, is just weird. Not surprising though, when people are out there praising, woobifying and fangirling over real life murderers.
I'm more than fine with people liking Vecna, I have my fair share of love for evil, irredeemable bastards. But people are hypocrites to an astounding degree. If liking Billy is a testament to my character, what does liking Vecna says about theirs? You can't apply a set of rules only when it's convenient to you, at least be consistent.
ppl hating on billy for being a big meanie while simping over vecna is unreal

Hi! I'm going to give my own, slightly unusual, addition to this.
This highlights why I really dislike a lot of Obikin fanfictions. The ones I've read always paint Obi-Wan like this. A conflicted, emotionally-repressed and kind of weak person who Anakin constantly saves. They usually throw the Jedi under the bus aswell, which aggravates me, but that's a whole other discussion.
They never let Obi-Wan do anything fun, and when he does do something fun it's always established that Obi-Wan's believes were wrong and that Anakin's the cool and strong one! The ones I've read put Obi-Wan in danger and make Anakin save him and I really dislike that!
They also almost always make Obi-Wan apologise and tell Anakin that he was too much of a mess / too set in his "no-emotions" rule to see how Anakin was feeling. And as said by OP, that's not how Obi-Wan actually acts.
Now, it's entirely possible I've just been reading the wrong fanfics, and I'm sorry if I painted Obikin as something bad. I'm just so damn tired of reading that dynamic.
Also, I'm sorry for highjacking this post with my weird rant.
Look, I know the tag “Obi-Wan is a Mess” is not always used seriously, but it still seems to be somewhat of a prevalent view in the fandom and I don’t get it.
It’s Obi-Wan Kenobi, guys. The guy survives a war and the genocide of his people by his brother without losing it. That’s not being a mess, that’s being a rock.
All the stuff he goes through as a kid in JA might be what started this trend of portraying him as full of self-doubt (self-loathing, sometimes) - and tbh? These books need to be buried. Not that they’re inherently bad, but they established stuff that was never part of Lucas’ vision and then the entire EU and the fandom took them as gospel and held on to them even after they were disproved (looking at you, you abysmally stupid aging-out rule).
In the movies and TCW, Obi-Wan is fairly confident, decisive and cool-headed. He makes plans and follows them through even when people question them. He’s not constantly seconds away from a breakdown as many fanfics tend to characterize him. (Which is not to say he couldn’t use a long nap and some warm tea. Lucas, Filoni, let him rest.)
Obi-Wan doesn’t struggle (much) with communication and he’s open about his emotions even if he doesn’t wear them on his sleeve, and if someone disputes this on my post I will write a 3k essay about it (or post links to other people’s great metas, that works too). That’s not being a mess. He’s also not defined by his traumas. Sure, horrible stuff happens to him - but what characterizes him is his endless ability to get back up and keep fighting and rebuild himself. The evolution of his fights with Darth Maul is a great example of that. Yes, in TCW s4e22 he’s unbalanced and enraged and a “mess” and he gets his ass kicked. The very next episode he absolutely destroys Maul and Savage in a 2v1 fight right after seeing Adi Gallia get killed and mourning her loss. He’s doesn’t stay a mess, he pulls himself together. That’s what’s so hopeful about his character.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is competent (kriff, he’s a General and he’s on the High Council and he’s a great diplomat and one of the best swordsmen in the galaxy) and he knows it. And he’s got the mental, spiritual and emotional fortitude to go through twenty years of exile as the sole survivor of his culture and come out of it even kinder, wiser and at peace.
Gimme more self-assured, reliable, okay Obi-Wan.

Yeah. Also. Wtf is going on with the skin tones in this family? Alexis is this tone. Mom is darker than this. MC takes after her dad (so whatever the player chooses) but even if you choose to be white it doesn’t make any sense cause mom looks like she laid in a tanning bed for too long. It doesn’t look natural at all. And Alexis’s eyes look like she’s wearing contacts.
I’m confused. Just please customize our families. Please. If you’re going to give us the POC option, don’t half ass it. I’m sorry to kinda highjack your post op I started ranting 😞
Tumblr media
We really have to pay to get a stable family in this game huh
