Where Chivalry Went To Die - Chapter 3: Resonance
“Sir Hegemol. First of my Great Knights,”
The water had wet the very ends of his beard.
“First of his rank; First to gain my trust, ”
He craned his head upwards, attempting to escape the rising tide, only to find his efforts met with the runoff from a new gutter.
“First Royal Tactician, Right Hand to the King himself,”
The old knight’s eyes squeezed shut as the rain swallowed them as well, hands bracing on either side of the prison, if only to lift his head just a bit higher. “First of us to fall.”
Hegemol’s mandibles struggled to part as they were seized by the cold, drawing in a desperate last breath before the water claimed his mask.
“First of us to fail Hallownest.”
The city, the lights, the cries from the citizens were drowned out as he found himself swallowed wholly by the rain.
"What say you, to the people you abandoned?"

King of Shades - 62
Sorry for the delay, folks! this page gave me a LOT of trouble for some reason & ended up taking nearly 2 weeks to finish. p sure you can also pinpoint the exact moment I gave up on the backgrounds, lol. these guys are less heavily based on their irl references since only one of them will ever show up outside of flashbacks (and we never see Hegemol outside of his armor, so there's not much to work with… based on the shape he might be a scarab/dung beetle like Ogrim? but who knows…). That being said: - Isma: Pseudophyllus titan (giant false leaf katydid) - Ogrim: Scarabaeus sacer (sacred scarab) - Ze'mer: Lepisma saccharinum (silverfish) - Dryya: Libellula lydia (whitetail dragonfly)

May we learn about Sting and her other parent?
ALWAYS HAPPY TO TALK ABOUT MY OCS
Sorry this took a hot second, I wanted to finalise the Bean Designs™ before replying
There's actually 3 of them, with Sting being the eldest
And for some context, they're from an AU where PV's sentience is discovered before the sealing, and also they ruinite with Ghost shortly after.
Tumblr media
She's extroverted, super energetic and likes to bite things (and people rip PK's ankles). First thing she did right out of the egg was to try and chew on PV's finger. She's also named after Hornet.
Tumblr media
Spectre is her twin brother and the younger one out of the two. He's a shy, quiet kid and a bit of a drama queen. Literally came into this world screaming his head off. And you can probably guess correctly that he's named after Ghost. I find PV naming their kids after their siblings very cute.
Also, yeah he's a bee and should technically be a grub, but I got attached to this design and just justified it by saying since vessels go through hemimetabolous metamorphosis, they got that from their parent and just hatch looking like a miniature bee. Yeah, that does raise some eyebrows.
Tumblr media
And the third one, Tally. They're 5 years younger than their siblings and look a lot more like a normal vessel and take a lot after PV appearance-wise. They're a quiet, sweet kid that prefers to do their own thing. Their nickname is "little tulip" thanks to their horns looking like flower buds. They're also the one kid I draw the lost of, for some reason
As for their parents-
Tumblr media
They have three. (the bee is supposed to have wings btw I just consistently forget about giving the characters wings for whatever reason, it's the bane of my existence)
Petunia is a solitary bee that just ended up in Hallownest and settled down there after a pretty hard life. They're genderfluid, use any pronouns and work as a comedian (who has a personal love for puns). They met, started living with and got together with their other partner before they met PV. Also, I find it funny that they're with PV bc they're very much an anarchist, very critical of the monarchy and generally dislike the higher beings. Also also, they've been declared autistic by my bestie.
Lummis is the firefly, he was born in Hallownest, orphaned and then adopted into a family of menderbugs. Because of it he's sort of a mechanic (or the bug equivalent) by trade. He's also the token cis guy of the relationship (he/him). He's the reasonable one in the relationship that keeps the others in check but still goes along with whatever idiotic idea Petunia pulls because "somebody will have to talk the guards out of arresting us and it certainly won't be you and your big mouth". He's also Hegemol's godson because I head anon that guy as a menderbug and I thought it'd be funny if PV has a bunch of close calls getting catched by good ol' Hedge.
Petunia is the bio parent of Sting and Spectre and Lummis is the bio parent of Tally, though they don't really make that distinction and just all raise them together.

Memoria, sketch pages 1-16
(Radiant Arc 10, 3.35)
Note: Excerpts of previous comics appear in this part. Scenes redrawn for ‘Memoria’ are labelled with their chapter and part number. No part of the canon has been changed and the only alterations are visual improvements (for example, a lot of Ch1 looked very simplistic in comparison to Ch3). Enjoy!
-
Page 1
Honey- In The Abyss. The light shone down. Calling.
-
Page 2
Honey- The light led out. It led to our future.
Pale King- ‘You are the Vessel. You are the Hollow Knight.’
Honey- The light left us behind.
-
Page 3
Honey- In the dark. Without future. But not alone.
Alone.
-
Page 4
((Ch3.3))
Honey- And alone. The Vessel returned. Blessed by the light above.
((Ch3.19))
Honey- The Vessel was false. It had learned of mercy.
-
Page 5
Honey- Of love.
Argent- Bound.
Honey- Of regret.
It learned / to make mistakes. The future was broken.
-
Page 6
Honey- We had to find our own.
(Honey- Future.)
((Ch2.26))
Argent- The Palace should be here! Now there are only lumaflies. Meaningless lights… A door leading to nowhere… and a guard made from void.
-
Page 7
Argent- What happened here? How…? Can we make it up to you?
We weren’t good enough…
(Honey- to protect…)
Argent- …
Luma- (Tip Tap)
Argent- You think?
Luma- (Nod)
Argent- Let’s look, friend.
-
Page 8
(Honey- Our names / We became…)
Argent- The Vessel. The Hollow Knight.
-
Page 9
Argent- This statue… How many remember the one it commemorates? Did they have a name? In opening The Abyss they told us they knew they were imperfect. Do they believe they made the right choice? Did they have a choice?
Luma- …
((Ch3.13))
Argent- Sibling,
We’re here to say goodbye. The two of us are leaving the kingdom. Leaving Hallownest, and you. We can’t tell you that we’re sorry, of how we wish we could help. We have to do this. Up there, dreamless in chains, we hope you understand.
-
Page 10
Argent- Goodbye sibling. Goodbye Hallownest.
Luma- (A familiar face / I don’t recognise)
((Ch2.2))
Argent- Focus. Focus. Focus. Why isn’t this working?!?! Raaa!! And now I have no soul left… …
-
Page 11
Argent- Thanks. … This sucks. Focusing… That’s all there is to it… Focus. Out of everything this is the one thing I cannot do- ha! How is it so easy for you?
Is… Is it the void? You are more hollow than me… Is it easier to focus with a mind made from nothingness?
When I focus all I see is light.
-
Page 12
Argent- But I’ll get there, friend! I just need to keep trying. Some time soon I’ll be able to focus, and then I know I’ll be okay.  Thanks for sticking with me, Luma. When I’m no longer bound by lifeblood, maybe I’ll stop holding you back. Until then, well, we have to keep moving forward.
(Honey- Will we be remembered?)
Argent- I don’t want to be forgotten. Like them.
-
Page 13
Luma- Tip Tap
Argent- … Why should it be up to us to remember them? If only you remember me, what would be the point? We have our names- we look for a future- what else is there? What do the forgotten do? Stay in the Abyss?
How did they free us from that place? They have been in that Egg for lifetimes. Their statue in the City is older still… Far older than our freedom…
That light. Those blades. Their void. It was all real, but how can it be so… We are proof of their impossibilities. Was that Vessel no more than a memory? Perhaps that is something worth remembering.
-
Page 14
Argent- Remembering the impossible. That’s us too.
False Knight/Hegemol- !
(Honey- What does it mean to be us?)
((Ch2.7))
Luma- (Tip Tap)
-
Page 15
Argent- Yeah. It’s getting worse. We need to find shelter. We can’t risk getting blown off these cliffs. We’ve come too far to be crushed by nature…
Luma- …
Argent- What about down here…? A cave? Perhaps we can take shelter in here?
Luma- !
-
Page 16
Argent- Ah!
((Ch2.34))
Mato- Taking shelter from the winds, I presume?
Argent/Luma- !!!
Mato- … Oh! You are very welcome to stay!
Argent- … Why?
Mato- … It has been a long time since I last had a visitor, (cont.)

Sorry this is going to get rambly, but I very much agree on the last one! Though mostly just for my personal tastes in general. I've not been around long enough to see any real shipping like that but I do think they had A Thing. But also the trait of putting duty so high on one's list that it would overshadow the ruler they follow is something I hold near and dear to my heart. My D&D character, Sorbet (she's my pfp) very nearly fought and put down a party member because she fully believed what they wanted to do would put the immediate kingdom in danger, another character has committed multiple acts of high treason against the various organizations they've served, and in their most recent place straight up told their leader 'I am swearing my oaths to the March, and to it's people, not once to you.' and told him the moment he starts going astray from what is best for the March, they will not hesitate to be the first to root out any corruption. So that is more than likely going to bleed over more than it already has for me if I keep drawing bug angst ough I go back and forth on in my personal interpretation if Lurien was that way before, or became that way after seeing the Pale King fail in such a spectacularly cruel way, for the first time. I mean up until the infection I imagine things went pretty good. I don't think he would have ever had to question his loyalty or his King's judgement (even if he did give it solid thought and didn't follow blindly), until... You know. Everything goes to hell in a handbasket. But that is one of my favorite tropes ever to the point that my hc Hegemol already has it and if he ever finds PK after he awakens from the infection he is going to [double mask damage sound]
you (handshake) me intensely liking characters with next to zero lore (though that's. Many characters in hk I am learning LMAO) Well now I have to ask about Lurien after that tag haha, same numbers? I won't get offended if something you dislike is something I do either, just curious since I'm new and haven't quite seen all the interpretations :)
LOL yeah if your favorite character isnt literally the hollow knight you might as well start taking hcs as canon cuz thats all youre gonna get, anyway
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5- i guess how much he wanted to believe that pk’s plan would work. i dont think he actually thought it would, but he wanted a solution… that getting into hc territory though lol, there aint much on this guy either
12- not very much. from everything ive seen, people either characterize him in a way i hate or dont care about him haha
13- ugh. i hate when people make his only trait being in love with pk, like the guy literally watched over the entire capitol city?? he had other things going on in his life. in his journal he writes that he became a dreamer to protect the city, not because of anything to do with pk.

The Great Knight are OK AU
Also known as the selfindulgent AU in which i give ghem happiness. So in this universe, through various shenanigans the Five Great Knights decide to expand on their group, but in doing so they gotta challenge their current views on themselves, their duty, and what being a Knight really means. There is a lot of adoption too, this is a happy AU.
Below the cut are a few headcanons I have on the individual Knights. It got kind of long so I will leave timeline changes for another post lol. Ah and many of these can be subject to change. I just like taking the two scraps of canon lore we have on most of them and go with my imagination c:
So all 5 came to serve the King under different circumstances and for different reasons.
Dryya
Dryya was the first, she was known as a fierce warrior, with an eye for detail and great speed.
She is a good leader and that's why she was chosen for the position.
She is the White Lady's favorite knight too.
As a quiet hobby, she likes knitting and embroidery.
She is kind of the mom of the group. A little strict but wise nonetheless.
She is the most well versed in diplomacy out of the five, leading to people to believe she is of noble birth, she won't deny or confirm.
Her biggest flaws are not taking care of herself and having a hard time to accept new ideas.
Hegemol
Hegemol joined after her. He was a common bug, but with a passion for mechanics.
He worked making the giant bug robot things you see in Crystal Peaks, but began using one as an armor since he thought it was practical. The Pale King was impressed with the achievements of this bug and granted him the position.
In a way it was his way to aknowledge hardowrking people and what they did for the Kingdom.
Hegemol is a really soft spoken guy, surprisingly, but he is quick to think and has a great sense of humor.
He hums while he works.
His biggest flaw is that he isn't great at social clues or reading the room. He will take things too seriously or not enough.
Ze'mer
Ze'mer was the third. She was a traveller that knew of many places beyond the Wastes. She didn't plan on staying for long but she fell in love with the wonders of Hallownest.
At first her presence was a bit worrying for the Pale King. Her existence basically meant that the mind PK granted wasn't unique.
She was also a strong warrior, being able to take on beasts without even getting hurt.
She could become a powerful ally. Which is why PK chose her to become a Knight to serve the Kingdom. She agreed, since it also meant that other outsider bugs like her could be welcomed in better conditions.
Her biggest flaw is that she avoids conflict too much. She doesn't like to argue or have her views challenged, and she ignores her problems until they overwhelm her.
Isma
Seeing that having allies was a good idea, the pale beings looked for other candidates.
She's a mosskin, blessed by Unn. She was a protector of the area, and was rumored to use magic drawn from a similar force then Unn's dream.
This basically means she has some power over plants and acid
She is often tasked with recuing bugs.
It was the White Lady who asked her to join. Isma saw a chance of benefiiting her people and being their protector and took it. She swore to fight for the lives of innocent bugs.
Her main flaw is that she can be condescending and thinks she understands people, even when she really doesn't.
Ogrim
I'm a little open for different headcanons for him. For this one I'll say he was a Colosseum fighter. A pretty popular one amongst bugs, for being both a champion but also a really charming guy.
He ended up regretting this life, he felt like taking down weaker fighters was not honorable at all, and hurt more than helped. He was also kind of rough and not methodic, which made him doubt his own skill.
So, after meeting Isma as she was on duty, he decided to leave his past self and start as a new man, training to be a Knight
He was welcomed by the King, both thanks to Isma's influence and the word that had spread of this defender.
Rumors say Ogrim is his favorite knight and they share a lot in common, considering they both left their previous "identity" behind.
Ogrim likes to sing.
His biggest flaw is that his loyalty sometimes blinds him, and his judgement can be skewed.

Child Hornet: Can we go to McDonalds?
Herrah: Go ask your mom.
Vespa: Ask your other mom.
White Lady: I’m simply too busy dear, go ask your father.
Pale King: Child, please ask someone less tired, like Monomon.
Monomon: Well I’m just as swamped with work as your father right now, ask Quirrel.
Quirrel: I don’t have a drivers license yet. Ask someone more responsible.
Hegemol: I’m sorry Your Highness, but I have duties to attend to. You could go ask someone with more free time about your request.
Pure Vessel:
Dryya: Sweetie I’m just as busy as your mother. Ze’mer would be the best to ask.
Ze’mer: I have a date tonight. Ask someone that, I don’t know? doesn’t get asked out on those??
Lurien: …
Lurien: We have food at home.
Child Hornet: I hate this kingdom.

Sorry to interrupt with 6th knight but what if the infected siege the palace and Ina’s freaking out internally because this didn’t happen last time
Also, funner: Hegemol having a Bigger mech in storage and busting it out for the occasion, just going all doomslayer on the horde
I think it'd be funny if Inanis just. Didn't know that Hegemol was a Menderbug and that his armour is a mech, so they're also going "WHY IS HE BIGGER SUDDENLY HELLO???"

In case anyone was wondering how my mostly-blind Hollow Knight playthrough is going: I have full-on cried one (1) time.
[spoiler warning]
It was not when I fell into the abyss filled with thousands of corpses and their shades whose hunter's journal entry read Sibling.
It was also not when I ascended a tower of buzzsaws (I get that it's probably a metaphor for how deeply the king locked himself and his thoughts away but given that there are spikes on top of the elevators even in the real world I still want a word with his architect) and found a room of discarded void constructs only to realize where those thousands of corpses came from.
It wasn't even going back into the abyss, seeing just how down far the layers of tiny tiny bodies went and the horrifying implications of the Sibling entry "fragment of a lingering will"! It was not Myla's infection, nor the Old Stag's desperate words of hope when he returned to his empty and abandoned birthplace! No! No, I teared up, but I did not cry, none of those times! (Though the last one came very close, when his name changed.)
Do you want to know why I have only just stopped actively pouring tears? The catalyst for my gosh-danged melancholy?
Dream nailing Dung Defender.
Seeing him sleeping in a cave of dung with lumpy statues made of dung in the shapes of his (probably) long-dead friends, and an idol (which I accidentally stole, I'm so sorry) of the king he still loves. And dream nailing him and seeing that in his dreams he is still a knight of a living kingdom, and the other knights' silhouettes are clear and sharp in the background, and he is in pristine white and when you dream nail him again during that battle all he does is recite all of the things he misses about the others.
He mentions Isma - I've been to her grove, and seen her body. I think he loved her, somehow. And I recognized the armor of the False Knight in the silhouettes. Or whoever they really were, before they died and a maggot crawled into their armor. I don't even know which name is theirs - they are forgotten by almost all. Hegemol, maybe? The Defender misses their humor. I don't know his name, either, yet.
The music is grand, just like the first fight with him - but unlike the first, where it was almost hilariously incongruent (this dung beetle is flinging balls of poo at you to such stately music, it's silly and fun and he has such a jolly voice!)... well, now the arena matches. He looks noble - chivalrous even. In shining armor.
These are good memories. And he didn't seem sad, in that first fight. Far from it! How much of that is resilience and how much is denial? Salubra still thinks the Crossroads are a bustling town, after all.
And then? Then you die and wake up next to him, sleeping in his den of dung next to misshapen dung statues he sculpted of his dead friends.
So yeah. Thousands of dead probably-children? Awful. I sniffled.
(And admittedly stood horrified in the corpse pile to process what the king had done for a solid minute - to be fair, I'm still not entirely clear on it. We'll get there. This game drip-feeds story, I love it.)
Freakin' Dung Defender? Heartbreaking. I sobbed.
I haven't beaten the White Defender battle yet. Cheesy as it sounds, tears got in the way, we'll try again later. I do not care how stinky it would be, I want to give this knight a hug. He shouldn't be alone. Maybe he could move to Dirtmouth. It's nice. Elderbug is a delight. Cornifer would love him.
