It's cool when ppl invent another von Karma sibling to make sense of the "my granddaughter has a dog named phoenix" line but i personally think it's infinitely funnier if Manfred von Karma just invented a whole granddaughter and dog to make his point seem more valid and then Edgeworth just sat there in the courtroom like huh. Didn't know i had another sibling. Guess it was relevant to my prosecutor training.

Reginald sighed as he finished writing the incident report.
"What number are they even on again..."
Phoenix- his Phoenix- finished up a full bottle of champagne and wiped their mouth with their sleeve.
"Who you filing today? Is it me?"
He watched as they tried to burn the bottle. They were clearly bored out of their mind.
"Close enough. 043. They punched another field operative hard enough to knock them out, as well as five teeth."
He wished he could call his other self and ask what would be the proper way to file this, or better yet ask him to come pick up his agent. Both of them had somehow found a way to go back and forth between dimensions without trouble, but 043 had a habit of physical violence that caused... let's just say a few issues.
They walked over to his desk as he got up to get himself another cup of tea.
"...yada yada... kick in the nuts... nearly killed a guy... made a girl eat her shoe?"
They laughed.
"Man, this person sounds great! I wonder if I'll get to meet 'em."
Reginald paused as he was walking back.
"...What?"
"They sound fun! Like someone you wouldn't want to fuck with or they'd break your neck."
They mimicked twisting someone's neck.
"I hope they don't break my neck though. Or I break their neck. Or we break each other's necks. That would be awkward to explain."
He was completely confused.
"I... Phoenix, is this a joke? It's not very funny."
They tilted their head like a dog.
"No? They sound cool."
"...You have met them. Multiple times. I overheard you calling each other brothers earlier."
Their eyes widened in shock.
"I... What?"
Reginald was getting genuinely concerned.
"Agent, are you alright?"
They looked the most confused he had ever seen them.
"I... But... I don't..."
They clutched their head in what appeared to be pain.
"... How the fuck did I forget a person?"
"Agent-"
"-Handler, I don't know a lot but forgetting a whole ass person isn't good! Especially if they're important!"
"Handler?"
They paused.
"You haven't called me that since you learned my real name."
They looked absolutely horrified.
"Real... name?"
Both of them stood in stunned silence.
"Phoenix... do you know your name?"
They didn't seem able to meet his eyes.
"I mean, of course, I'm... Phoenix. You said that."
"No. Your real name."
They looked completely defeated.
"Trevor-"
"I need a minute. Now. Sorry, I don't..."
They walked quickly out of his office, clutching their head.
He watched them go, then turned to the person behind the door.
"Could you please grab a medic? Something seems... very, very wrong."

AA4 SPOILERS/////
that quote you called krisnix is soooo fascinating to me bc, they really had dinner together most days, like that’s a level of commitment we didn’t even see from most of the ppl who phoenix considered important and that whole time on kristoph’s end it was to keep an eye on Phoenix and on phoenix’s end it curiosity bc kristoph voted against him losing his badge and also it was to find out the reason why he lost his badge and kristoph was just this name that kept popping up, and for Phoenix and kristoph it was so many red flags bc kristoph knew phoenix wasn’t the type to let something rest and Phoenix knew there was more to kristoph then at first glance but somewhere along the way it become genuine, but at the same time kristoph still kills shadi after a single convo with phoenix and phoenix still pressed record before even asking kristoph to be his lawyer, it’s Phoenix recording every single one of those convos with kristoph but still (probably) having him meet truck, but it’s kristoph keeping himself at arms length from Phoenix but Phoenix taking it bc he’s never been the type to give up on a person, whether it’s to their doom or his and for better or worse he wouldn’t want anyone else to really see him the way he currently is besides kristoph, now what the hell could that possibly mean?
(that quote I called krisnix)
anon you will never know the extent of the joy I felt seeing this initially and the extent of it I still feel now. but I’d like you to. Thank You For Biting. and for waiting a little over a month Sorry about that. I'm gonna ask you to forgive me if this doesn't make any sense or hold up to scrutiny. the demons have got hold of me and I'm making do
because I get to talk more about krisnix. Ha ha. pulled out all my silly little suppositions to review again I think I was waiting for an opportunity like this. like my hubris is getting me. I recklessly called that quote krisnix and now a little over a month later I'm completely sick about it.
I'm going to reiterate that I'm very sorry if this reads like shit, and I'll apologize just this once that this post got as long as it did. go fish
you ever think about how kristoph's a dog guy. guy who has a dog, guy who brought a photo of his dog into solitary confinement with him. also a caged blue bird which alive or not happened to contribute significantly to the krisnix breakdown of dec. 2023 There are really some very bright minds in krisnix pit. me and you included anon. that's a tangent. I'm sick. I'm drafting this in a terribly disorganized fashion. I'm reading transcripts. I'm getting dizzy.
Tumblr media
this fucking room haunts me
vongole, though
Tumblr media
a man's best friend, who's known to bite if handled roughly. her name means clams.
I've been doing some web surfing. I can't move in one straight line to save my life so I've been doing some web surfing. kristoph doesn't say what kind of retriever vongole is, which is fine. retrievers are dogs bred to retrieve game, tasked not to break skin, to be gentle, to keep soft mouths. vongole is a retriever who bites (literal) when bitten (metaphorical); a clam that clasps shut.
kristoph's a dog guy and sometimes he's the metaphorical dog. not One straight line to save my life. it's funny that seven years have passed without phoenix meeting vongole. held at arms length but indisputably held. a man's closest friend. besides his dog.
a lot of the time phoenix is the metaphorical dog. putting all tangents aside A lot of the time. phoenix is that metaphorical dog. what is seven years of companionship, eating dinner after dinner together, and being seen at your worst... worth? indulge me: this guy, you pieced together pretty quick, was behind the forged evidence that lost you your badge. this guy, as you saw happen in real time, was the one person on that committee to vote against that "strictest punishment".
this guy, as an indisputable fact, is a big fucking weirdo. you'll need to snare him eventually, for the forged evidence, but--you're kind of in the habit of liking weirdos. is the thing. he sunk your career, he lost you your badge. he's kind of an asshole, also.
he has bought you and trucy dinner more times than you could ever hope to count. there's a curve in your sofa from all the times he's sat in the same spot, wrinkling his nose at greasy takeout boxes and your grape juice breath. he talks to trucy in a voice slightly less haughty--warm, if a gun was held to your head about it--than the one he plays up with you, and she completely eats it up; thinks he's real fun to tease. his eyebrows wrinkle, an almost nothing frown, when she puts on a show with a trick that he can't immediately come to some conclusion about. he'll put on obnoxious rubber gloves to wash your dishes, to protect his manicured nails, as he goes down a dozen rabbit holes trying to reason out what he's missing. you've seen him doing casework. he's seen you delirious and half out of your mind. his mouth, in your experience, is soft.
you're kind of in the habit of liking assholes, too.
neither of these guys can be vulnerable for shit. over the course of seven years, they've seen each other as close to vulnerable as they can get, which isn't very, because this span of time especially--phoenix stubbornly keeping a little girl's head above the water, kristoph, for reasons we will never, ever understand, constantly looking over his shoulder--really doesn't see either of them in a place to get through any skin-flaying conversations about what they want with or from one another.
kristoph really does want control, though. he wants to be in control of things, have a handle on things. and he probably figured out something like immediately that phoenix wright really isn't the sort of guy you go to for that kind of thing. and yet! sunk cost fallacy's a bitch, kristoph! what good does a beautiful bluebird do you if you don't keep it with you on display heavy-handed. I know. don't I know it.
gonna rein myself in a little. because I'm off the deep end and you're posing really interesting ideas. kristoph couldn't rest for seven years because "shadi smith" was unaccounted for, out there somewhere. kristoph couldn't rest for seven years because he was scared for his life. "shadi smith" played a game of poker against the best and got whacked. and then murdered! tough luck!
really it's my curse. that so much of krisnix is personalized person to person, because of real aa5 shaped smoke and mirrors. because it gives me the space, the soapbox, the platform, microphone, and spotlight, to ask, In that trial, of the murder of Shadi Smith, where Kristoph Gavin was supposed to defend Phoenix Wright, what verdict was he looking to see through?
Tumblr media
because I'm sick, you see. kristoph had just, finally, gotten rid of the man he spent so long being scared of, just clawed his way to the path out of the woods, and all he had to do was--
Have you ever stood at a crossroad. the decision laid out in front of you's not actually that tough, if you can believe it. even space for you to completely rationalize any attachments away: you get phoenix wright off (haha), you keep your reputation as the best defense in the west (opinions on the name notwithstanding), and you could, as a possibility to consider on occasion, maybe even learn how to have a slightly more-vulnerable-than-usual conversation.
or you could lose.
pretty simple choice to make, right?
and then phoenix goes and fucks it up, of course. dogs get restless with nothing to do. they want to be of use to you, kristoph, did you ever think to fucking ask phoenix for help? you come when called, you let yourself be persuaded, generously, to help keep food on the table. to keep a warm body company, one way or the other. to be some fucked up psychosexual approximation of a friend. but phoenix comes running when called, too, and you haven't once given him the chance.
big fucking stink you're in, kristoph! You didn't just brain a guy with a juice bottle for no reason. Tell me why you did it.
the big question you won't answer. five black psyche locks pulsing with a despair you don't have the tools to register. you said it already: I killed a man named "Smith" with a bottle because I am an evil human being.
what does phoenix hope to get out of this. motive for a murder, then what?
you really get me anon. phoenix never the kind of guy to give up on somebody he loves, up against someone who's finished with even arms length, stubborn as all get-out, and, even to himself, completely unsalvageable. irredeemable. an evil human being who killed a man named "smith" with a bottle.
it's not that phoenix would help kristoph hide a body. he pretty evidently did not do that. and it's not that phoenix would just forgive kristoph for trying to poison a twelve year old girl either. but there were seven full years between the disappearance of zak gramarye and the murder of "shadi smith", and vera misham hadn't been poisoned yet, and phoenix wright is an awfully loyal, terribly stubborn man himself.
I don't really know what the hell the lot of this means to tell you the truth. but I think now as much as ever that phoenix should chase kristoph's chance at life to the death, and I think that regardless of the stopping point on the line of time kristoph's last words to phoenix should be ...Later, then.

inspirations. mainly just saul goodman (i'm sorry) but consider any other antihero with charm and a whimsical but sinsiter nature to be an inspiration too
biography
raised in nevada near the las vegas strip! by his mama. she moved there in her 20s in search of fame n' fortune but she eventually just got stuck at the stripping job she initially took to help jumpstart her career. when she had max, she had to take other measures so she had the $$$ to raise him. even if it meant pulling him into scams she'd pull on tourists and forcing him to tag along on her rounds as an avon rep because 'it sells better when you flash 'em your big puppy dog eyes, maxie'. things like that stick with max as he grows older, starts perusing the strip with his friends for victims of his own. all to make a quick buck.
one day, she just so happened to pick the wrong tourist to try n' scam and nearly ended up in something resembling a fistfight (resembling because the guy was a head taller than her and she wouldn't have lasted a second) when a good samaritan butts in and defends her!!! scares the big lug away. the moment his mama learns that said good samaritan was a politician from los angeles (ie. $$$$$$$), she's laying the charm on thick. he's older (ie. balding), mild-mannered, in need of a good ego stroke so it's not long before they're getting hitched and max is on a one-way flight to los angeles! he's just 14 then.
max doesn't like it at first. doesn't like how stuffy and snobby everyone seems. hates his moms weird new husband too. but he wins max over in time, and they grow to have a genuinely wholesome relationship! so much so that max decides he'd like to be a politician, just like him. he's surely got the charisma for it, says his now father. but he never did grow out of his knack for causing trouble and pullin' a fast one on just about anybody, courtesy of his mom, so there's a real moral struggle there. but all politicians are a little slimy, right? what does it matter if he cut corners if it meant the greater good coming to fruition? ends justify the means, always always always.
golden state is a no brainer. his father went there and his father before him. and now max was one of them! so he'd go too. he didn't even think he'd go to college, so it's all a little foreign to him and he does just about anything to pass. and i do mean anything. he evens joins a few clubs! look at him go!
of course, it's not without a few problems. a couple months after his 21st, him n' his buddies went to a casino just to say they have. max ended up pocketing 8k and has been chasing that high ever since. it's escalated in the past couple of months, what with law school coming up for him shortly. he's started stealing his parent's valuables to have money to gamble with. turns out he's still just that kid on the strip lookin' to make a quick buck.
personality
very theatrical! the son of a politician and a retired scammer, so he is ever the showman and the smooth talker. he knows it too, so he can be up his own ass but his devil-may-care attitude and general amiableness means he is a guaranteed good time.
if chaotic neutral was a person. strikingly dishonest and flaky. but again!!! the ends justify the means for max. and the ends is always the best outcome for his loved ones.
SO tacky, especially as it relates to his appearance!! mismatched prints and loud colors and the whole nine yards. the rate at which he buys new clothes, it's like you can just tell having so much money is a very new prospect to him. not that he wears hella name brands but it's just very lee in bones and all coded. the little brown western shirt, the floral shirt and the grandma cardigan!! yeah!! he doesn't let it go to waste either, if it doesn't fit he's just take scissors to it and wear it anyways. takes great care to look the way he does (ie. just slightly disheveled at all times). in a permanent state of looking for the next reflective surface to check how his hair's sitting.
catchphrase is "i hardly know her"
runs on one redbull and a cigarette and that's it
also, don't think i mentioned it so i thought i'd tack it here at the end, but i figured michael kepler's parents and max's would run in the same social circles and whatnot

Bria was checked into the hospital for seventy-two hours after undergoing paperwork and a physical examination. Mike stayed with her for everything. He then hugged her and told her how proud he was of her for asking for help. I love you. She loved him, too. He watched her go back with a nurse with a small bag. She would have both group and individual therapy sessions, which he hoped would help her figure out what was going on.
During the intake process, she told the nurse she was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder with bipolar disorder, ADHD, and anxiety. She was also diagnosed with dyscalculia, but she didn’t know if that was relevant or not. The nurse wrote it down. She was given a private room that was stripped of anything she could use to hurt herself.
Mike got home to find the band enjoying Chinese food. They decided on that instead of pizza because they had tofu options. He thanked them for saving some food for him. How did it go with Bria? It went well. She was anxious, but that was to be expected. Other than that, she cooperated and was honest with the person doing the intake. Since she was voluntarily admitted, she could leave before the seventy-two hours were up. She wanted to see how it went before making that decision.
She was going to be supervised while taking her medications. Was she not taking them? He didn’t know because he never watched her take them. It was not something he thought he needed to do. As he ate, they continued hanging out and talking. He was so tired, he was happy to have seventy-two hours to rest. That made him feel a little guilty because it wasn’t her fault.
Phoenix seemed to read his mind. He reminded him to take care of himself and rest. They didn’t want him to be in the hospital for exhaustion. He thanked him and joked about him reading his mind. No, he was just looking out for him. Thank you. He truly appreciated it.
The guys helped him clean up their mess by bringing everything into the kitchen and throwing their trash away in the garbage. They told him to get some rest, as they left. He would. The house was quiet. It felt weird. He expected Bria to come downstairs or through the front door. Instead, she was getting the help she needed. Misty came to the door and sat down. She used her front paw to scratch the door. Human, I need to go to the bathroom.
With everything going on, he forgot about the animals. He got her leash and connected it to her collar before grabbing the potty bags. As he left his phone inside, he didn’t know that Brad had texted him because he hadn’t heard from Bria and he wanted to know that she was okay.
Hey, sorry. I took my dog for a walk and left my phone at home. Bria is getting mental health treatment. That’s all I am going to say to protect her privacy. I’ll let her know you texted me. – Mike
He understood and would wait for her reply. Jon phoned Brad to ask him if he heard from Bria. He relayed the message of her getting mental health treatment. That was all the information he had since her friend and housemate was respecting her privacy by not telling him that much. Neither of them knew what mental health treatment she needed. They talked about what they knew about her. Brad had an on-and-off friendship with her for years.
She mentioned something about having Borderline Personality Disorder, so Jon was going to look into what that was. They didn’t think she was using drugs or had an alcohol problem, so it wasn’t that. All they could do was wait. In the meantime, Jon went on his phone and did some research into Borderline Personality Disorder.
He had read about it before, but now he was doing some more research. It was a very complicated disorder that was related to trauma in childhood, namely abuse or neglect. He learned that people were afraid of real or imagined abandonment and rejection, had problems regulating their emotions, were impulsive, had an unstable self-image, and had a pattern of unstable relationships. They saw people as being either bad or good with no gray area.
They had “favorite people”, who they relied on for comfort, guidance, and validation. That person could be anyone. That was called idealization. They had problems with not knowing or understanding boundaries. Asking for space could mean rejection or abandonment. That led to them devaluing their relationships, friendships, or even family members.
They were also more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol; self-harm or attempt suicide. The final thing he learned was that they were more likely to be sexually active. He wondered if he was her favorite person and if she understood that he had to eventually go back to New Jersey to be with his family. Since he didn’t know where she was, he would have to wait to talk to her. He hoped that she was okay and getting the help she needed.
Mike seemed like he had a good night’s sleep the next morning. He laughed and admitted he had. The cats slept in Bria’s room as usual. They didn’t seem to understand what was happening. All they knew was that she wasn’t there. After taking Misty on a walk, he got ready for bed. He was going to go to the hospital the following day for a meeting with her and whoever was in charge.
It was just to see how she was doing and if she needed to stay longer. Brad reached out to him and asked him where she was. What did he tell him? He told him that she was getting mental health treatment. Since he didn’t have her permission to give specifics, he didn’t. Phoenix agreed that was smart. It should be her decision whether or not she wanted him to know. The band agreed. As usual, the cats roamed in and out of the room looking for attention.
Bria learned that her medications were not working properly. That was why she was acting out and was having trouble. She was given a new medication, which helped balance the chemicals in her brain. For the first time in weeks, she could see the light at the end of the tunnel. Her moods were more stable, as she was thinking more clearly and rationally.
She was also put on a diet to help her symptoms improve. The psychiatrist listened to her concerns about being on a diet because of the risk of developing an eating disorder. She had problems with becoming hyper-fixated on certain things and she was worried about it becoming an obsession. The psychiatrist appreciated her concerns. This diet would not be about losing weight. It was about giving herself the benefits her brain needed through food.
She decided to try it. Who made the meals where she lived? It was her and her housemate. They switched off regularly. It just depended on their schedules and who was in the mood to cook. She didn’t think he would have a problem with her having a new diet plan.
During the day, she did activities like coloring with crayons, watching television, and doing puzzles. She ate dinner, breakfast, and lunch with the other patients. There were staff around everywhere. The only privacy she had was in her room. She was highly encouraged to participate in the activities because they would take her mind off of being in the hospital.
That was true. It also kept her from getting bored. The entire day was structured from the time she woke up to the time she went to bed. Everyone got up at the same time and went to bed at the same time. The first night, she couldn’t sleep because she wasn’t at home. She would have to catch up on sleep when she got back to Mike’s. Until then, she went back to coloring with crayons while she waited for lunch with the other patients.

Chapter Eighteen: Raise You Like a Phoenix
Last Chapter •||• Next Chapter
The sole human of the Unikingdom was meditating for the first time in a long time. He needed something, anything to know for sure he and his friends weren't going to fail. His eyes snapped open when he felt a soft tap on his shoulder and a heaviness in his lap.
"What the fu- Oh. Hey, kid." He looked down and saw the heaviness was from Puppycorn's favorite ball.
"We haven't played together in soooo long! Come on! Throw the ball!" The puppy bounced around excitedly. The human got to his feet and threw the ball. The puppy chased after it, tripping occasionally. He glanced up at the sky, wondering if the Man Upstairs was telling him to focus on the friends he made and not him. By the time the thought was complete, Puppycorn was back with the ball in his mouth. The two played catch for a while, stopping only when Puppycorn spoke again. "I'm glad you're playing again. I was worried I hurt you, too."
"Kid, you could never hurt me. I'm not sure you're even capable of it." He sat next to the dog. "I'm sorry I haven't been with ya a whole lot. I've been busy."
"You're training with Hawkodile, right? I wanna watch you guys train, but Hawkodile keeps telling me to leave." The puppy chewed on his ball.
"I think he just doesn't want me to get distracted. I wouldn't mind havin' ya." He closed his eyes, feeling the soft breeze on his face.
"I'll try extra hard to sneak in next time! Maybe I can spell my way in!" Puppycorn put the ball down in the grass.
"Spell? Like with the alphabet?"
"Nope! I can spell in the other way, too!" He looked to his friend, looking for some praise.
"Wait. You can cast magic spells?" The human lifted an eyebrow.
"Yep! Like this! I summon… a ball!" With a puff of smoke and glitter and a flash of green light, a ball with green and silver swirls appeared in his mouth. "I don't know how I know how to spell, so I don't do it often."
"I gotta remember that trick." It was unbelievable to the man to think magic like that was real. Of course, he had to remind himself sometimes he came from a world where dragons and spacemen coexist. "I assume ya know more than ball summoning?"
"Yep! But I just really wanted a new ball." He pushed his old red one over to Rex. "Now we both have a ball."
"Kid, this is your favorite ball." He picked the ball up, glad he wore gloves. "Ya sure ya wanna give me this?" The puppy nodded, still chewing on the new ball. "I'll probably wash it first, but it's going in my pocket and stayin' there." He wiped the dirty ball on his pants and shoved it in his vest pocket. It fit, thankfully. Rex turned his head toward the path to his cabin when he heard a twig snap. "Go find your sister. I'm sure she'll wanna play with you." Puppycorn nodded and ran into the cabin. His instincts were on point: Master Pain practically skipped down the path.
"Oh, Dangervest! Didn't think you'd be so easy to find! But, sometimes the powers that be want to see you lose… and me win." She got close to the human, looking into his eyes. "That pain of yours. It's hard to see now. But that was the part I liked about you most. Oh well. I can drag it out." She looked to the cabin. "Or I can make some new pain for you."
"No. Stay away from that cabin. I won't say that again." His voice was low and threatening.
"Now, that makes me want to burn the place down even more. Watch the pain in your eyes as you continue to lose everything you care about." She put her hand under his chin, which the human swatted away. "I'll be all you have in your former paradise."
"I think I have to let ya know that I have a girlfriend and it's super serious." Rex took a step back.
"You and I both know you don't. That's part of that pain I love so much, Dangervest." She took a step forward, putting her hand on his cheek. "You changed everything about yourself and she sees you now as nothing more than a broken man who needs fixing. I don't see that. I see the beauty in that pain. It's why I love my work." She started to laugh as Rex grabbed her hand and held it tightly. "There it is. That hit a nerve." She grinned. "I may just lock you away somewhere. You could be my personal project: see how long a broken man can remain broken and on the brink of oblivion."
"Over my dead body." Rex growled.
"Oh, you aren't getting it. You wouldn't die. You would just be left in the dark to rot and be forgotten. I would make what you felt in the Dryar System seem like a good memory."
"I am never going through that again."
"Maybe you do get it. It would be so much worse." She put her hand on something around her neck and grinned widely. "Let me show you what I mean, beautiful." She forced her hand on his head. The human yelped, face going slack with the psychic pain she inflicted. She removed her hand and he replaced it with his own. "I want to do that again, but we can't let people know we're playing this game together. Come with me so I can hear that voice of yours sing for me."
"Or what? The second you harm anyone in that cabin, I'm not holding back." He continued to hold a tone of intimidation.
"But you'd be in so much pain. That's what I want, Dangervest. Your pain." She put her hand back on his face and he cried out. "Huh. That cry sounded like a different voice altogether. A more pathetic one. I love it."
"What are you doing to me?" His voice lost all bravado.
"I'm just dragging the pain you felt in Undar out in the open where it can be felt. I can see it returning in your eyes now." The grin glued to her face was terrifying. "Know what? We can do this here. Pain can spread to others. It's fun." She put her hand back on his head and he screamed this time. This brought Unikitty outside, where she saw Rex drop to his knees, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"Hey! Get away from him!" The cat was stopped from going further when she saw a flash of blue on the Doom Lord's chest. "She has a gem…"
"Yep! And I'm using it for my entertainment." Her hand never left Rex's head as the human became still. She lifted his head roughly and gazed into his dark eyes. "This must have been how your eyes looked down on that dusty planet. Beautiful." The royal cat's fur turned red and her horn gave way to a column of fire.
"Get away from him!" The cat roared. She charged and Pain played with Rex's long brown hair.
"Oh, I wouldn't come any closer. I hold all the cards, you see." She crouched down and gazed into her captive's eyes again. "I think I'll make some demands. Give me either this broken man or the gems you stole from us that we stole from you. I'll give you time to decide." Unikitty went to rush closer, but noticed Rex's expression had changed to something darker than she'd seen before. His left eye twitched as he looked up at Master Pain. The cat remained in rage mode, but watched to see what he would do first.
"Don't I get a say in this? Or am I just a curiosity to you?" He hissed, struggling to get to his feet. "I say I will take you apart and send you to your boss in pieces. I told you: I am never going through that again. I'm also not going to be held for ransom so your boss can get the upper hand."
"Stay down, sweetie. The people who can make the real decisions are talking." Pain reached for Rex's head, but the man slapped it away. She shook her head and turned back to Unikitty. "So. Make your decision, princess." The cat kept her eyes on Rex, his dark energy giving her chills. She let herself turn into her usual pink hue and shrugged. She spoke after some silence.
"That's not up to me!" The cat glanced at her suffering friend. She still couldn't place the emotion he was feeling, but it was probably something she should stop.
"We're leaving it up to him?" The Doom Lord laughed. "Let's discuss this guy's decision making for a sec, 'kay? Friends get kidnapped and no one wants to help me give chase? Let's just do it myself on a ship I can barely fly! Got stranded for a long time because of the last decision, causing emotional damage? Let's use time travel to hurt everyone I know! Somehow managed to bounce back from all that? Let's hide in the Unikingdom so I don't have to face my past mistakes!" The expression on Rex's face was still unreadable, but Unikitty could have sworn she saw a brief flash of guilt in his eyes. "I'd rather talk to someone who isn't a total failure."
"That's your opinion. I see a loyal friend who had some really bad luck. He was hurting but felt he had no one who could help him. Then, when he found people who wanted to help him, he stayed where he was wanted and loved." Unikitty saw Rex's head go down. "I think he's doing his best!" The human looked at the cat, confusion finding its way to his crayon box of emotions. The kind words emboldened him to finally get to his feet.
"Oh, don't fall for that, Dangervest. All you have is your pain. You should know by now that other people are fickle." The Doom Lord reached again for his head, playing with his cowlick on the way. As she did this, he grabbed her hand by the wrist. "What's this? You're making a stand? Last time, that ended in you losing everything. I wonder how much more you can lose at this point."
"That's what should scare you, Pain." His voice was a terrifying combination of his innocent past and the dark being he became. "I'm tired of being put in situations like this. I never asked for any of this. I just got dragged from one tragedy to another, watching the people I care about get hurt. I'm not doing that anymore. I control my destiny."
"You don't. That's the funny thing. The one time you did, you were the one who hurt everyone you used to care about." She tried to get her hand free, but Rex gripped tighter as she struggled.
"RJ?" Unikitty wasn't sure what the human was thinking, but she couldn't help but wonder if he felt like he was backed into a corner. His focus was on the Doom Lord right now. The cat turned to see her brother watching from the window of the cabin. The human noticed this, too and looked down at his vest pocket.
"Not this time. I'm not going to let you drag me down to that level." He reached for the gem. The movement was so sudden that both Pain and Rex held the thing. Unikitty smiled, proud of her friend. "I'm done being dragged." He let go of the Doom Lord's hand. "I'm doing what I want to do."
"Which is what?" The Doom Lord tried to get the hand around the gem out of Rex's grip, but that was not happening.
"I'm gonna stop your boss from taking my home from me. Then, I'm taking a long vacation. I heard the Futuron colony on Saturn has a really rad monorail." This was spoken a little calmer, more in line with the laid back Rex that Unikitty knew. He pulled at the gem, but the Doom Lord held on too tight. "After that? I got the rest of my life to figure that out."
"We'll see about that, you beautiful disaster." She pulled the gem close to her chest. "I'll bet you won't see that happy little ending you envision. You're too broken, held together by barely anything."
"I'm gonna fight for it with everything I have. Even if I don't get to see it, the people I care about will." He pulled at the gem again, pulling Pain close. "And that's a lot more people than you think." He put his free hand on the back of her neck, feeling for the string that kept the gem tethered to her. He found it and played with the clasp.
"Oh, you're being a bit of a flirt right now. Or is this a desperate plot to get my gem? Either way…" She put her hand on his cheek, making him wince. "A girl has to be more protective of her heart."
"I'll just leave you guessing." He finally found the clasp and unclasped it, the two halves of the string falling to flank her neck. She didn't seem to notice.
"You are flirting with me! That's actually adorable." She leaned in close to see his eyes. "I see a new pain mixed in. The pain of facing your potential death. It looks good on you."
"I'm fine with dying. At least it meant I made a mark somewhere. I won't be forgotten by the people who love me. But you. Pain. Your work may be remembered, but you? Not so much." The two were in very close proximity, which made Rex whisper this softly. The Doom Lord got chills from the voice alone. Unikitty didn't understand what was going on. Was he winning? "You have no power over me. Disappear." The Doom Lord's hold on the gem went slack and the human took advantage by letting her hand go and grabbing the gem before it fell to the ground. She took a few steps back and Rex limped slowly toward Unikitty. She flew over to him and let him lean on her for support.
"This isn't over, Dangervest!" The Doom Lord shouted. "You and your friends still have to face Doom! And she wouldn't be caught in those beautiful eyes of yours!"
"But you were. I'd think about that next time." Rex didn't look back as Unikitty led him back to the cabin. He flopped onto the couch, curling up into a ball. "Puppycorn, is that Doom Lord gone?" The dog nodded. "Good. I wanted to start crying while playing depressing music in the darkest corner of this room and that would totally ruin how awesome that walk away was."
"Are you still hurt? I could go find Doctor Fox." Unikitty asked as Rex threw her the gem he acquired.
"I'm not gonna lie: yes. Have been since long before now." He took a breath and grabbed a nearby game controller. He started playing the racing game he and Unikitty played together, hiding his face from the cat as best he could. She didn't seem to notice and dragged Doctor Fox from the lab. She was holding what appeared to be a dark blue gauntlet with glowing green lights on it. As she approached the human, she could see his head was in his hands, the game still running with his car off the track completely. The fox turned the game off and put a paw on his shoulder.
"What happened?" The doctor turned to Unikitty. The cat explained what transpired and she frowned, heading to the kitchen. She returned with some milk and cookies, placing them on the armrest of the couch. She pulled the human in for a short hug. Unikitty saw this and flew in for a hug of her own. He buried his head in her soft fur and she could feel his tears. Doctor Fox put the gauntlets and the third gem away. When she returned, Unikitty was still comforting her friend. Puppycorn had joined them as well, though he may have only responded to Rex's distress. The fox was soon joined by Hawkodile.
"What happened to them?" The chimera pointed to the three friends.
"Something that I feel may be overdue. Our emotionally unavailable friend is opening up." The two furred royals had broken the group hug by this point and the human looked like a weight was lifted off of him as he went back to playing his racing game, but this time with the dog and cat. "This could be a step in the right direction towards his rehabilitation."

A/n: It's almost been a week and a half since you and Leia have seen Bradley. One of your besties tries to help you come up with a solution 😉
Word Count: 3k
Warnings: cursing, some anger, teasing but as usual LOVEE 🫶🏼
Please don't take my work, I will find you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
A week and a half have passed since you came home from Legoland. Bradley has been working the past 9 days straight so you hadn’t seen him. You and Leia were building some of the Lego sets that you and Bradley had got for her at the park. You heard the door open. You looked at the clock and it was 3 PM. That meant Bri was home.
 Bri called out, “I’m home! Billy and Austin are with me!”
Leia’s eyes lit up. “AUSTIN!!” She ran to him and jumped into his arms. You got up and went to go and greet everyone. Bri gave you a hug, and Billy hugged you and kissed your head. Austin tried to hug you the best he could he was holding Leia, so he kissed your cheek.
Austin brought Leia back to the table and set her down, “How was Legoland, Darlin? It’s been a minute.” She started to show him all her sets and the two little mini figures that you and Bradley made for her. “Wow, that’s so cool, sweetheart. Did you have fun?” He patted her head.
Leia nodded, “I had so much fun! Bradley’s friends rode all the rides with me!”
“Bradley?” Austin said slowly and looked at you concerned.
You sighed and bit your lip. Austin brought his attention back to Leia.
“Yea! But, Bagman and Bob got really sick so they couldn’t ride anymore. So in the end I had to ride with Warlock, Cyclone, Hondo, and the Dog guy!” She leaned over the table with excitement.
Austin furrowed his brows, “Bagman and Bob were sick. So you rode with Warlock, Cyclone, Hondo, and a dog?” He said slowly questioning Leia but looking at you.
“Oh, I mean Coyote! That was his name!” She nodded.
“Oh, Coyote.” He smiled at Leia.
She looked at him with so much excitement, “It’s their callsigns! Like Papa Mav! His real name is Pete!”
“Huh. That’s a lot of people to remember, sweetheart.” He laughed and messed up Leia’s hair. He looked over at her lego sets again, “Can I help you build your favorite set?” She looked at you with wide curious eyes.
You smiled at Leia, “He can help you, my love. I have to get dinner started anyway.” You gave your pieces to Austin and proceeded to the kitchen.
Austin rubbed his index knuckle on Leia’s cheek, “Hang on, sweetheart. I’m just gonna catch up with mom, okay? Don’t start without me.” He pointed his finger at her before he came to you.
You were looking in the pantry for something to make for everyone, “Hey sweetheart. That was a lot of gibberish to me. But I think I understood what she was getting at.” He laughed, “But, how did it go with, Bradley? After the banquet and Legoland?”
“Callsigns Austin, They can get confusing, but you’ll get the hang of it. Like Nat is Phoenix.” You laughed and patted his chest.
He laughed, “Yea, you’re right.”
You grabbed for the Mac and cheese boxes, “But, it went very well. Leia and I slept over at his house after the banquet and then the next day we went to Legoland.” You turned and gave him the boxes.
He smiled and took them, “Talk later about it then? I need to hear all the details.” He winked at you and placed the boxes on the counter and returned his gaze to you.
“Yes, later.” You smiled at him.
“I love seeing you like this, y/n. Happy. It looks really good on you.” He patted your arm and went back to build with Leia. Billy joined them and Leia gave him a big kiss on his cheek. “Uncle look what I got!” She started to show him everything she got in Legoland.
Billy was amazed by all of Leia’s toys, “Oh my gosh, bun! These are so cool!”
You started to rip open the Mac and Cheese boxes. Bri came and helped you make dinner. She started to prep some chicken. She bumped your hip with hers. You turned and she gave you a hug.
“Sooooo? Anything yet? Has he come over today to see you girls yet? How has it been with your baby daddy? Him and Leia bonding well?”
You continued to make the Mac and cheese, “They’ve bonded very well, but she still hasn’t been able to see him for the past week and a half.”
Bri slammed the chicken down and looked at you annoyed, “Why?” She looked unamused. “I do not need him to not only hurt you, but now her. I will kick his fucking ass. I’ve already warned him.”
You put your hand up and shushed her. You leaned into her ear, “Don’t cause a scene in front of Leia, please. He’s working. You know he’s trying. You said it yourself.” You walked to the refrigerator to get the milk.
She came up next to you, “Yea, but he does not work 24 hours a day, y/n. The first couple of days? Okay cool. A week. Still okay, but questionable. Almost 2 weeks? That's fucking weird.”
You scoffed, “Bri, stop. I understand where you’re coming from. I really do. But I know he will come when he has time. He is still adjusting.”
She gave you another hug, “I just don’t want to see you and Leia hurt.”
You pulled back and put your hands on her shoulders, “I know, thank you so much. For everything, Bri. Seriously.”
She nodded at you, “I’d do anything for you and Leia.” You smiled at her. You both continue to cooking. Then she leaned into you again. “Well, how are you and Darth Vader doing?” She nodded in his direction. You looked over at him and he was smiling at you. You turned back to Bri and she winked at you.
You rolled your eyes, “I love Austin. He is a great catch, but I don’t want him in that way. He’s a really good friend.” You looked at him again and he was playing with Leia and her legos.
“He’s here nearly every other day if not every day, but I totally get it. You’re in love with the captain. But, I think Leia really likes him, y/n. She gets so happy and excited when he’s here.” She whispered in your ear and then pulled away to put the chicken in the oven.
You looked at Leia and Austin from the corner of your eye while you finished with the food. She did look pretty happy with Austin. They were like best friends. She was always so happy to see him. You were sure eventually after she got used to Bradley she would be the same with him.
Austin came back over to you and rested his hands on the counter, “Hey babe, you need any help?” He leaned on the counter and let out a sigh.
You looked at him and shook your head, “No I think I’ve got it. Thank you… babe.” You laughed and started to pick up the pot of Mac and cheese and he grabbed it from you.
“I will take it to the table, Just bring a rag to put under so it doesn’t burn the surface.” He turned around and walked away before you could answer.
You went and grabbed a rag from the drawer and laid it onto the table. He set the pot down and patted you on the back, “Wow, we make a pretty good team.” You laughed at him sarcastically.
Leia propped herself onto the table, “I think you guys make the best team, momma! You guys are like Ben Solo and Rey!” She wiggled her eyebrows at you two.
Austin raised his eyebrows, “Ben Solo and Rey? The girl that formed a dyad in the force so she’s like one with Ben Solo?” He looked at you confused.
You nodded your head and pointed at him, “Yep, that Ben Solo and Rey.” You look around awkwardly.
“Well, okay.” He looked at Leia and shook his head at her. She looked back at him with a sly look.
Austin leaned into you, “Does anyone realize that we are just friends yet? That I know everything about Bradley?” He narrowed his eyes and scrunched his nose.
“Nope, I don’t think so.” You stuck out your bottom lip and raised your brows to him.
He laughed, “$10 they never find out and just keep egging it on.”
“You’re on, Austin.” You narrowed your eyes at him.
You and Austin sat down with Leia and Billy to help with the Lego structure they were building.
Bri finally took the chicken out and set it on the table with the Mac and cheese. “Well, dinner is ready children.” As she looked at all of you sitting at the table trying to figure out how to build one of Leia’s Lego kits.
Billy waved her off, “All right thanks, babe.” He still continued to look for a piece that Austin was trying to describe to him as you and him looked at the instructions.
Bri stood there glaring at all of you. It’s as if you all felt her staring because you all looked up at the same time. She stood there just staring, no words, just blinking 100 times per minute.
Leia slowly put down her pieces, “You’re right Auntie Bri. Playtime is over.” She started to clean up the legos and you all followed her.
After dinner, Bri and Billy went to the store to get supplies for everyone to make s’mores. It was just you, Leia and Austin. The three of you went into your room and were on your bed. You sat back against your headboard. Leia laid down in between you and Austin and played with her toys. Of course, it was her R2-D2, BB-8, and her two lego figures of her. Austin laid down and supported his head up on his hand.
Leia patted your leg, “Momma, can I listen to my favorite song on your iPod?”
You nodded and she ran to your bag to get it along with the earbuds and came to lay back in between you two.
Austin patted Leia’s hair and looked at you, “So, do you want to talk about it? How it all went with, Bradley? It’s been a minute. Let’s catch up, babe.”
You sighed and smiled, “ For starters, it went very well, better than I could have imagined. He was so good with her. It’s like he just knew what to do. He wanted to do everything. I literally didn't have to do anything.” You looked at Leia she was playing with her toys again and softly singing her favorite song.
Austin smiled widely at you, “Well! That’s really good. Was it nice to have a little break?” He laughed.
You threw your head back and let out a relaxing sigh, “YES! God most definitely. He already seemed like he knew what he was doing.” You thought back about how he took such great care of Leia. “Crazy.”
Austin made himself more comfortable. He propped himself up on his forearm. He looked down at his hands and fiddled with his index fingers, “So how were you with him? Was everything okay? I remember the last time you two had a little bit of a moment. Did that continue?” He looked up at you curiously with his eyebrows raised.
You slacked your neck to look down at him while your head rested on the headboard. “It was good. It did continue. You have nothing to worry about, Aus. It’s like he’s his old self, the one before he left for his deployment came back.” You bit your lip and shook your head, “As if nothing happened, you know. It was really nice. He was super loving. Like super loving. It was like he never left.”
Austin was looking at you compassionately and chuckled, “You’re totally in love with him. You wanna marry him right now.” He poked your hip and laughed. “You can see it, when you think of him you have this blissful gaze that takes over.” He was mocking your face and putting his hands together and bringing them to his cheek, “Mrs. Bradley Bradshaw.”
You threw a pillow at him, “Shut up, Austin.”
Leia looked up at Austin with furrowed brows. He put a thumbs up to her stating it was okay. He pinched her cheek lightly and she continued to play with her toys.
He returned his attention to you. You looked at him annoyed, “I am not trying to marry Bradley Bradshaw right now.”
He gave you a cheeky look and shook his head, “I don’t know, y/n. Your body language really screams FUCK ME BRADLEY. I NEED ANOTHER LEIA.” He laughed hard, “JUST MARRY ME PLEASE!”
You lunged over your daughter and covered his mouth. He laughed hysterically into your palm. He was tearing up. Your daughter took an earbud out and looked at the two of you and shook her head. She retreated to the floor to play with her toys in peace.
“My body does not say that!” His eyes went wide and he nodded. He was still laughing at you. You removed yourself from him.
“C’mon, y/n. You told him you love him. I’m sure these past couple of weeks you’ve thought about marrying the guy.” He tried catching his breath. He sighed and examined your face, “God, sorry that was hilarious.” He looked at you seriously, “Soooo, do you? Be honest with me.”
You became tense he wasn’t wrong, “I do…” you closed your eyes and opened one slowly to see his reaction.
He was smiling at you deviously, “I told you. You do want to marry him.” He pushed your leg. “I know you all too well, y/n.” He poked his tongue into his cheek as he grinned at you.
You covered your face. He patted your leg, “So now tell me about this sleepover.” He wiggled his eyebrows at you.
You narrowed your eyes at him and sucked your teeth, “Nothing happened if you were wondering. After the banquet, we picked up Leia and slept. That is all.”
Austin rolled his eyes, “As if I am actually going to believe that, y/n.” He huffed, “Come on, we are adults now.”
You opened your mouth wide, “I am not lying!” You pushed him slightly, “Plus even if we were to, it’s none of your business!” You laughed.
He hummed, “Mhmm, sure, Jan. Whatever you say, sweetheart.” He laughed at you, “Isn’t this what girls do with their besties? Girl talk?” He cocked his head at you.
“Is this what that is? Girl talk?” You widened your eyes at him.
“Well yea, we are besties. I’m one of the girls now, babe.” He winked at you. “I want to know all the juicy gossip.”
You slapped his shoulder, “Well what about you and Phoenix? Huh? Let’s have some girl talk, sweetie. What about her?”
He looked at you shocked, “You mean, Trace? Oh, no nothing happened.” He waved you off and laughed, “I’ve known her forever. That would be weird. I am just her wingman on the ground.”
You shook your head, “I don’t buy it. You’re a horrible liar.”
Austin sat up and looked at you deep in thought, “Seriously, she and I are just friends. I trust her with everything like you do Bri.” He smiled at you. “Buuttttttt.”
“What?” You asked annoyingly and smiled.
“I need to hear more about how badly you wanna marry Bradley. I might have to have Trace push, Bradley.” He teased you.
You rolled your eyes, “This conversation is OVER. Austin.”
He laughed loudly, “Aww come on! Don’t be a downer!”
You got up off of your bed and walked to the bathroom, “This conversation is done. My love life is being attacked!”
“But that’s girl talk! Come on!” Austin turned to face you.
You covered your ears and went into the bathroom.
Austin knocked on the door, “Fine I am joking!”
You cracked the door and peeked through the crack at him. He held up your phone. “I think you should text him. Tell him you miss him.”
You opened the door and grabbed your phone. You rested against the door frame. “Think so? It wouldn’t be too much?”
He looked at you in disbelief, “Too much? What do you mean?”
You fiddled with your phone as you bit your lips and looked off into space.
“Do you not text him while he’s away, y/n?”
You shook your head and looked at Austin sad.
“Oh my gosh! You have to text him! Let him know you miss him and that you want to see him! Guys fucking love that shit, sweetheart!” He let out a breathy chuckle.
You just looked at Austin. He shook his head and pushed your phone closer to you. “Do it, y/n. You’ll thank me later. Trust me. I’m a guy.”
You looked at your phone and pulled up your and Bradley’s messages. You looked up at Austin and furrowed your brows. “Are you sure?”
He nodded, “Do it.”
So you texted.
Hi Bradley. I know you’ve been busy with work. I just wanted to let you know I miss and love you. I really want to see you.
You gave your phone to Austin and showed him. He took the phone from you. He looked at you annoyed and shook his head. “No, sweetheart let me help you.” He began to text.
Hey Brad. It’s been a little bit, just wondering when you would come by and see Leia and me? I hope you are doing okay. I am just worried for you. We really miss you. When I say we, I really mean I miss you so much. Could you please come over? I miss your hugs and kisses. I love you.
Without even showing you he sends it and shoves your phone into his back pocket. “You’re welcome, babe.” He grabs your hand and high fives himself and exits your room.
You stood there with your hand still up. You looked at Leia as she looked at you confused, “Austin, what did you do!?”
 You could hear him laughing in the distance. “The s’mores are here!”
Your daughter took off running. “It's time for s’mores! They’re back!” She was so excited.
You took a deep breath and walked out to join everyone to make s’mores.
Oh God I forgot it was Apollo Justice's 15th Anniversary + blog updates
So, uh... hey, guys. Sorry for the delays. I just remembered I had some cool stuff to share and today seems like a good enough day to drop by again.
Everyone knows I have only the most impeccable timing by being absent when I need to be.
Jokes aside, it's kinda awkward of an update post this time because I bring both good news and bad news.
The bad news is: I hate this site and how it sucks when I or anyone looking at my blog wants to find old archive posts. I hate this site even more now that they've changed the formatting and suddenly I can't just copy paste from the text files I've been using for this blog's project.
So I wanna move, but my blogspot site hasn't been updated in a couple years by now. I still need to figure out how I'm gonna port over this entire blog's archives, so my apologies that I don't have any particular updates on this, despite already having the next part ready. God, I hate tumblr.
BUT the good news is: I've updated my Patreon Page. I've decided to take off the translation commissions since not many people would be coming to me for bulk translations and stuff anyway, and definitely not for $3-5 a post. Instead, I want to experiment with writing commissions. I have an original story in the works, inspired by my childhood imagination, where I plan to make it a fan collaboration as well. If people are willing to donate, I will reserve special rights to ya'll to help contribute to this story.
I'm still putting things together atm, but the brief plot synopsis is thus:
A pair of Japanese international students arrive to meet their host living in a small town near San Francisco and will be staying with her for the entirety of their university stay. However, their simple introduction to American life is cut short when a puzzling series of paranormal murders take place wherever they go. As it turns out, their host is a specialized Arbiter of Death - one who judges the most dangerous, corrupted souls of the recently deceased - and this is business as usual for her. However, not everything seems to be going as it should in the Underworld. And to top it all off, she has to be caretaker for a family of primordial Godlike alien dogs who bring her no end of frustrations.
Aside from the main cast, some key plot points, and major themes being set in stone already, the rest of the story is open to readers to decide what direction it may take, what mysteries may develop over its course, and what characters, settings, and other concepts will appear. Please understand, though, that I won't be taking requests to put official or copyrighted content from real franchises, so don't ask for a Batman-meets-Phoenix-Wright crossover or anything. I'm technically making money off of this and I don't want to be sued.
I will be posting the prologue chapter to this on my AO3 shortly. Chapter 1 is in the works and isn't open to requests, but we'll see for later chapters.
In the meantime, I will try to update my blogspot site to get it ready, so I can return to my main project.
Oh, and before I forget again: Happy 15th Anniversary, Apollo Justice.
This has been Rubia Ryu the Top Pomeranian.
Sonnets
Word Count: 2144 (Ao3)
Pairing: Dukexiety with some Creativitwins
Rating: T+
Warnings: Sexual themes, brotherly angst, talk of death
Roman finds a journal and assumes it’s Remus’ but when Remus says it’s not his Roman leaves him with it, so he has some time to read. Little does he know what will come from perusing that book.
-----
Remus was chaos, he didn't bend to anyone else's rules unless he wanted to. Almost nothing was off the table for him—gore, violence, monsters, pain—but he had limits. Don't steal Janus' hat when he isn't holding or wearing it, because an angry Janus meant silence, or worse being silenced and alone. Never ever get too gross with Patton, because he will scream and cry and flash those hideous puppy dog eyes! Stay at least 6 feet away from Logan or suffer through a lecture on how little influence the duke held. Never let Roman hurt himself so bad he can't heal. And never ever read Virgil's diaries.
Remus was happily throwing shurikens at a large canvas with paint balloons, having fun despite only hitting the ones filled with red. It was just a little annoying to only have one color on a solid white background, and even more annoying when it was Roman's colors staring at him. Roman hadn't been much of a good brother in the past few years, and it stung to think about how they drifted apart. How almost everyone ran from him to Roman. It hurt to be so lonely.
"Greetings, Your Disgrace!" Roman said as he entered the castle atrium suddenly. Remus threw another star that lodged itself in the canvas with a splash and a thump, and grinned manically at the unsettled prince.
"Well if it isn't MacBetty himself!" Remus said and cracked his neck sharply, "What hell did I probably unleash on you today?"
"Don't flatter yourself," Roman scoffed and held up a black journal with sparkling green trim, "You left this in the common area."
"Did I?" he asked and righted his head with a sickening pop. He was as bad as Roman about collecting cool journals and never filling them, so it could be his, even if he didn't recognize it. Roman handed it to him and crossed his arms.
"It would appear so. If Logan yells at me for leaving my notes lying about, he will certainly yell at me for yours."
Remus hummed softly and ran his fingers over the cover, ignoring the jab. The trim pricked his fingers as they glided over it. It was a nice journal, but definitely not something he conjured up. He supposed it might have been a gift, but that would mean someone made something for him—someone other than Janus, and maybe just one other side, but he remembered every gift Virgil ever gave him.
"He likes to yell. Are you sure this is mine?" he questioned, still learning the rise and fall of the trim.
"I assumed, considering the design. I don't like to open other people's journals," Roman answered. Remus knew he was scared of leafing through it, probably expecting some security monster popping out the second he opened it. He didn't blame him for that one, but it stung nonetheless.
"Me neither, but now I'm curious!" Remus laughed and opened to a random page. It was all hand-written poetry. Interesting!
"It's a poetry book! Wanna hear one? It could be a hint!" Remus wiggled his eyebrows. Roman let out a short sigh but went tense.
"I have other things to do. I came to drop off the book and now I must depart. Farewell." Roman bowed and sank out with flourish. He left far too quickly for comfort.
"Love you too, nice seeing you again, don't be a stranger," Remus pouted and went back to his room, too bummed to paint anymore.
  He rose up and flopped on his bed with the journal open. Some angsty poetry might make him feel better. He got comfy and let his eyes traverse the page
My mouth is dry Sugary sweet and kind Choking me with my own tongue Out of everything, that saccharine isn't a lie
Remus pursed his lips. That one was really short, and with the talk of lies, he had to wonder. Was this actually Roman's? Did he want to share this with him covertly? Remus bit back a squeal at the thought and kept reading with some hope.
Lost in translation Obstinate and selfish Get over yourself Avoidance builds pressure Never any quiet when you snap
Remus giggled, knowing exactly who that one was about! Someone pissed the author off! And he knew that that person pissed Roman off a lot! He turned the page, expecting to learn more about this author, believing they could be his brother wanting to reconnect. He was a little surprised to find a skull doodled in the corner but brushed it off.
I want to pull him from the shadows and into my heart Will he see me? Will he disappear if I reach for his hand? Am I blind and staggering in desperation? Someone like him would be better without me Someone like him deserves someone better No star deserves to succumb to a black hole
That one hurt. Remus wiped away the tears forming in his eyes. He knew that feeling all too well. The one side who made him want to obey, the side that made his heart flutter like the bats in his tummy—that side was his best friend and then he left. He missed his partner in crime and he wished that Virgil would come back, just for a visit, and spend time with him again. But that wasn't happening and he had a whole book to read about an author he could really connect with, Roman or not.
He went through several poems that were angsty and angry, full of self-loathing. With each piece he read, the more he doubted it was Roman. The language wasn't formal enough and it didn't match his style at all! It was good stuff, most of it, and Remus kind of hoped the real author would be willing to collaborate with him. He liked this guy.
Like the sun overhead, you're on fire The big man has a little golden boy Pompous and cruel with haughty desire Which one of us are you gonna destroy?
Darkness and shadow that cannot be lit Overshadowing you to make it stop Use that hubris to land another hit I'll keep fighting until the curtains drop
You think you're Hercules when you're so weak Rise like a phoenix Icarus, just try  Maybe you'll learn what it means to be meek Until that day you won't see me cry
I will rain on your parade every damn time Stopping stupidity is my worst crime
Okay so that one threw him for a loop. It would take a few minutes to piece it together. Remus decided that he could assume it was about Roman this time. Princey loved the classics and he had a pet phoenix. This author had some beef with him! Remus hoped for more anger at Roman with the next poem, because he certainly had enough pent up with the snobby, best-friend stealing, always got the spotlight prince. He didn’t get that catharsis, he got more than he bargained for.
I find comfort in breathing in his scent Even if his hands are mine for tonight If he asks, I don't know where his clothes went What I'm doing is wrong but it feels right
If I close my eyes I can taste his kiss A dream in a nightmare clouding my mind Hearing my name on his lips would be bliss To pin him down, our fingers intertwined
I long to stare into piercing jade pools So he thinks of me while I stake my claim I want him to never want to let go I always thought that love was just for fools But on his green sash, love, or something, came I almost regret that he'll never know
This was definitely not a book the author wanted to share. Remus was pretty sure that his face was going to melt off. Now he really wanted to figure out who wrote these! Someone actually liked him like that at some point! It definitely wasn't Princey in that poem—Remus still had the sash mentioned! He was just the tiniest bit turned on, but most of his hype went into his famous wiggles.
"You're so dead!"
Remus jolted up and beamed. Virgil never stopped by anymore, so when he popped up threateningly, Remus was too happy to care or put the pieces together.
"And how do you wanna kill me? I have some suggestions!" he sang and shimmied. Virgil scowled and crossed his arms.
"Have Janus wipe your memory and give it back."
"What, the book?" Remus questioned and held it up. Virgil snatched it and held it to his chest protectively. Remus' eyes widened in horror.
"You wrote all that?! And I read it!? Oh no no no no no! I had no idea—I'll get Hisster Myde and scrub it away with steel wool! Dammit I am so sorry, Sca–Virgil!" Remus yelped and got up to pace. His only rule about Virgil, broken! The only rule he wanted to follow—tarnished!
"Were you about to call me 'Scabby Doo' again?" Virgil scoffed, hiding the fear and hurt he felt.
"No, 'Scare Bear,' something kinda cute but that’s not important right now!" Remus answered, "I read your stuff without asking! I might be a crazed Camus Stranger boy, but I have some standards!"
"Remus. Breathe. You're gonna wipe this trash from your memory and it'll be okay," Virgil tried to soothe him, only for the duke to go rigid.
"Trash!?" Remus snarled and spun on his heels and marched up to Virgil until the lumbering emo hit the wall, confused and scared.
"It's not trash! I know trash! I eat it for breakfast! That book holds some of the best stuff my critical creative ass has read in ages!" Remus snapped and glared up at him with a fire in his eyes.
"What?"
"Those poems are great! I was gonna find the author and beg on my knees like a needy subby bitch to collab with him because holy shit! I felt something with each one!"
"Even the one with the skull doodle on the page?" Virgil squeaked, his face a beautiful shade of red. Remus smiled sadly.
"Yeah, that one hit a little too close to home. I got all teary eyed. Thinking about it now after reading that saucy sonnet, it really hurts!"
"I uh—" Virgil stammered, "I'm, uh, 'm sorry for the sash and the whole—"
"If you apologize for anything else I am going to lip wrestle that apology away!" Remus cut him off, "Because dammit, Virgil, I love you, even if you don't feel the same way anymore. No more self-hate and no more doubting yourself."
"Puppy," Virgil said and finally took back some control, guiding Remus back and having him sit down, "I can't promise I'll be able to stop that completely, but if you can stand a little bit of it, I wouldn't mind making that collab a date."
"Really!?" Remus grinned making Virgil's eyeshadow turn purple, "Can we paint too? And watch scary movies? And make out? And then try and woo each other with some dark prose until one of us caves and asks the other to be his boyfriend? And then f—"
"Yeah," Virgil cut him off and pressed a finger to Remus' lips, "Except for the part about caving. Will you–I mean, only if you want to, would you–and it’s cool if you say ‘no’ since things might be a little weird but—”
“Band-aid, Emoraptor!” Remus cut him off, like he used to do back in the day when Virgil started down one of his nervous tangents.
“Maybe be my boyfriend now?" Virgil said quickly and winced.
"Yes!" Remus cheered and dragged Virgil into a hug, tumbling on the sheets, "Loom over me like a cypress tree and stay with me until I taste death for a night."
"Stay here and cuddle until we pass out like touch starved gremlins? Only if you visit me in the abyss until this world calls," Virge mused and wrapped his arms around the duke, curling around him protectively.
"And then the next," Remus hummed softly and kissed his hand, “But you’re always in my dreams!” Virgil buried his face in Remus’ neck and smiled against his skin. Who would have thought that they would wind up here?
Roman sat on his bed and stared at the collage of pictures he had on the wall. In the very center was an old drawing of him and Remus in front of a castle. He sighed wistfully and stared at it, admiring Remus' work. He hoped that sneaking into Virgil's room was worth it—he wanted Remus to be happy even if he couldn't provide that joy. Maybe one day he’d be able to, but until then, he hoped he got his best friend and brother together to make some amends if not more.
A belated birthday surprise for @eringobroke!
Better late than never?? So, she’s actually read this already lol. I commissioned art from her for it! But the surprise is the posting as I hadn’t told her when I would post this lol. I took a short break from working on kisses to get this ready for the public. I know everyone is hurting for some fluff (and this is not fluffy) but I promise you’ll get a ton of fluff on Sunday! It has a lot of smut in it. If you want the full version, you’ll have to subscribe. It all still works without the smut (I think). So you don’t have to subscribe (but I’d love you a little more if you did!). You can read chapter one below or head over to Patreon for the free version.
Happy Birthday @eringobroke!!! And thank you so much for the brilliant art! Working with her was a dream guys something to consider when thinking of your next project to commission! Idk if this is a gift, commission, or both but I hope it’s a good surprise. Either way, I’m so glad to have you and your work in my life!
Check out the art eringobroke made titled Hunting a Dryad!
For AO3 (since this is a gift) click here. For Patreon click here. Or keep reading below.
Chapter One
It would be the first time in years I had stepped into a forest like this. Fear had kept me away. With it being so long and things so changed, I felt safe. Not to mention it wasn’t the same woods that I originally feared.
“Come on Kikyo!”
I was spacing out, looking out at the horizon as we rose above it. Ayumi ahead of me, I turned back to her and the path with a smile. “Where did you guys find this hike?”
“Google,” Hojo stated simply.
The boots felt strange but I was getting used to them. As well as being deep in the forest with my friends. “It’s beautiful.”
Ayumi giggled, “you fought us so hard on coming here, I thought for sure you’d be bitching the whole time!”
Yes, I had fought the idea, cursing the fact that my friends were adventurous for the first time since I met them. We had done a lot of things together. They had really brought me out of my shell. Skydiving was still my favorite.
So I knew it looked weird when I turned down a simple hike. The path wasn’t on any map and according to Hojo, it was magical. I had to agree but I was biased. Regardless of my previous trepidation, I loved the wild and untamed forest the most.
Now that we were deep within, I felt all my worries and anxiety were for nothing. I felt nothing, not even a tingle. There was nothing here in these woods that was a threat to me or my friends.
We made it to the top of the mountain, panting and glistening with sweat. Eri was passing out water from her pack while I dug out some dried seaweed. Sitting on rocks, the fog cleared and we could see all the way across the valley of thick trees and brush to the town in the far distance. The air was cleaner, crisper than I had breathed in a long time. It reminded me of days long past.
Watching the sun start to drop and the sky turn to gold, we all silently agreed it was time to go. We made it back to the car by sunset. My hand was on the door when it hit me. If I hadn’t had a hold on something, I would have fallen to my knees. It had been so long, I forgot how overwhelming and powerful the sensation was.
“I… I need to go.”
Eri looked at me with a slight lift on her lips. “Then go in the bush. We’re too far out for a bathroom.”
I was shaking but none noticed thankfully. “No, I need to get out of here. Away from all of you.”
All smiles dropped, Hojo grabbing my shoulder gently. “Kikyo? What’s wrong?”
The feeling left, coming and going quickly. I took a deep breath to steady myself before fixing the damage I had made in my haste. “Nothing. Sorry, I’m just… tired.”
They each looked to one another and I wondered if they would believe it. Hojo was the first to turn back to me with a smile. “Let’s get you home then?”
Holding onto me a little longer than necessary, Hojo showed me affection the only way he dared. I worried he would confess to me soon. Then I would have to leave the group earlier than planned. I would have to leave someday, ghost them completely as I had done many others in the past. I would miss them just as I did all my other friends now long gone. But that was the nature of my secret and how I kept it all these years.
This time when I felt it, I didn’t let fear overrule me. Keeping calm in the back of the SUV we all crowded into, I quickly got out when it stopped at my place and said my goodbyes. It would most likely be the last time I saw any of them.
As I neared my door, my hands began to shake. It was coming from inside my apartment. There was no point in running, I had been found. All this time I had managed to stay hidden, I assumed no one was looking for me. That may still be true but it didn’t change the fact that I had inadvertently stepped into trouble and it had followed my scent to my home.
That was why the feeling went away in the woods. I hadn’t been left and forgotten. No, my scent was all that was needed to find my home and wait.
Even though I expected it, my heart still jumped into my throat as I opened my door to the creature that sat in my living room. I closed my door, using my body as I fell back on it with dread.
Standing on four paws, the large dog snarled at me. He stood as tall as a Great Dane but was the shape and coloring of a wolf. But it wasn’t a wolf, it was a dog.
“Hello, Inuyasha.”
The snarl stopped but I knew he was still frowning. I didn’t dare move or look away, watching as he shifted. His bones and muscles twisted while his shaggy white hair retreated, all of it save for the hair on his head which grew in length until down his back. The white fur changed to peachy skin and the muscles bubbled and popped out all over his toned body. Now standing on two thick, human legs, the only thing that remained the same was his glowing, demonic, gold eyes and fuzzy white ears on top of his head.
No matter what form he was in, Inuyasha was beautiful. Stunningly, which was why I still couldn’t move even as he stalked towards me. In a flash, he had my wrists in his hard grip and slammed them back into the door above my head.
“Hello, Mate. Long time no see?”
I shudder, his naked body close to me, and the heat of his skin wafting over mine was close to driving me mad. “What are you doing here?”
He shook his head slowly and clicked his tongue. “You messed up. Stepped too close to me and I felt it. It was nothing to figure out your path and find your scent, leading me here.”
Leaning in, he put his face so close, I could feel the tip of his nose as it brushed my skin and the air as he dragged it in, smelling me. He went from my shoulder, up my neck, to my hair. But then he went back to my ear.
“I thought you were dead,” I whimpered at his harsh whisper, his emotions felt even as he spoke so soft only I would hear. He was trembling against me now. “For years. But my mark didn’t fade. So I thought… I had screwed up somehow. Then I realized… you left me.”
“I… I’m sorry. I had to.”
“Is that your sapling out on the balcony?”
He had come in through the window, passing my tree in the small planter. I gave him a nod as my heart tripped in my chest.
“It’s grown. You’ve been taking care of it. As you should I suppose. So you dug it up and ran? Why?”
I couldn’t tell him. Not now, not ever. I didn’t know what damage it would do. “I…”
He was waiting for an answer but I had nothing. Silence fell over us but it didn’t last. Inuyasha pulled out of my neck and glared down at me, his eyes no longer gold. Now they were red.
“You left me. Cared so little about our bond and our mating that you didn’t even say goodbye…”
“I couldn’t…”
“For decades now I’ve had your mark, laughing at me for ever thinking you gave a shit about me…”
“Inuyasha, please…”
His mouth crashed to mine painfully and my body responded instantly. Roughly, he put my arms around his neck and grabbed the back of my thighs hard. I had no choice but to wrap my legs around him and he continued to press me against the door. He threw me to the floor and continued.
“As good as you remember, Kikyo?”
I felt sick, my belly turning when he called me by that name. “Don’t… don’t call me that…”
“Oh? So only your human friends can call you that? If it bothers you so much, then use your real name.”
“I can’t. You know I can’t…”
His face inches from mine, I watched the colors swirl in his eyes. Red and gold mixing around his irises. “Then maybe you shouldn’t have left me for the damn human world?!”
“I didn’t…”
He left me on the floor before him while he sat on his heels. I waited, waited for him to say something. To hold me. To be just like the man I remembered. But instead, he got to his feet and walked around me.
“Inuyasha…”
He stopped but didn’t turn, facing the window he had undoubtedly entered from. “You’re my mate so I’m bound to you as you are me. But there is no longer love between us; not since you broke my heart and left me for dead.”
“I… I’m sorry…”
“Doesn’t fucking matter now. Because now that I’ve found you, you will do what I want. I’ll come and go as I please and screw you when and how I want. You’re no longer my Mate. You’re my whore.”
I was shaking and so was he. The cold tone of his voice left me freezing on the floor. The floor he had just had his way with and left me on. As soon as I saw him, smelled him, I wanted him, wanted it, wanted him to make love to me like we once did. That wasn’t what he did and it wasn’t what he was going to do to me in the future.
Standing on the edge of his escape, he finally looked back at me before he disappeared. “See you soon, Kagome.”
With my name (my real name) on his lips, I rolled to my side and curled into myself. My clothes were nothing but rags under me while my boots knocked the floor. Not as hard or as loud as they had while Inuyasha fucked me but they were still there.
With one hand, I grabbed my wrist, the one that had his mark. Slowly tracing the faint purple moon on my wrist I allowed myself to cry. It had been a long time since I was reminded of what I had given up and it didn’t lessen the ache in the slightest.
Tumblr media
I knew she was near, I could smell her. A week of chasing her and I refused to give up.
I caught sight of her a short distance away. Her golden flank flashed in the peaks of sunlight through the heavily shaded woods. She was grazing, her mouth low to the grass as she nibbled.
She was waiting.
I slowed my approach, careful with my paws so I didn’t alert her. She might be waiting but with her running from me at every turn since we met, I knew better than to let her on to my presence. She still felt it; felt me before I was close enough to strike.
Her muzzle lifted and her azure eyes found my golden ones. A flash of white and she was off, her tail high as she ran. And I chased. Today would be the day. I could feel it, a tingling in my spine and loins stemming from the hurried breaths she took.
She was excited.
I could hear it in her breaths and smell it in the air; her white tail turned upwards and showing me her hindquarters while scenting the wind with her sweet, succulent musk.
But then I lost sight of her, turning hard and fast down a long lane of bamboo. It ran thick around the water’s edge, a river that parted the forest and many animals drank from, and hid her from me. When I rounded the tall grass and entered the narrow path of its forest, I stopped short.
There she was, knee-deep, quickly cupping water and splashing it over her body as if it would cool down her heat. No longer the gentle and beautiful doe I’d chased for days on end, she stopped and stood at her full height as the gorgeous woman I met over a week ago.
Her long black hair curled with dripping water; water that ran down her breasts to her flat belly. Dark curls met it before sliding over her round hips and slender thighs, sad when the water had to return to the river.
She didn’t face me, half-turned and giving me her side. I took in the sight of her as much as I could, feeling her eyes on me the entire time. The sand was soft under my paws; soon under my feet as I stood up before her. Her lids closed and opened slowly, black lace brushing her rosy cheeks as she lowered her sights over me.
I was already up to my knees, grabbing her thin arms and enjoying the feel of her soft skin on the pads of my fingers. Her hands went to my chest when I pulled her to me, her chin shooting up to keep her eyes on mine. Twisting us, I had her on the sand, watching as she waited, laying on her back for me. Her eyes were everywhere, searching for any other eyes on us.
What we were doing was probably breaking the rules. Considered a sin, with me a Hanyou and her a forest nymph, a Dryad. If that’s the case, then they would have to take it up with the fates as they were the ones responsible. This union was beyond mine or her control.
Crawling over her, I grabbed her face and stilled her search and worry. If anyone were near, I would have smelled them.
Now, with her eyes wide on me and only me, I lowered my mouth to hers. Sucking in her air (tasting her fully) it was like nothing else in this world. It ran sweet down my tongue and burned in my belly like ale.
“Inuyasha…” She whispered when I pulled away.
The tears in her eyes made them sparkle like sapphires. In the short time, we spent together before this moment, I had not told her my name. And she didn’t tell me hers. But I knew it; just as she knew mine, pulling her to me and cradling her in my arms.
Mates always know their names and she was finally ready to be mine.
“Kagome…”
Panting, I pulled back from her hold, her eyes glassy and to the sky. Taking her hand, I sunk my fangs into her wrist. She flinched as if waking from a dream, looking at me as I marked her. Kagome didn’t hesitate, taking my arm and biting until she drew blood. Her blood slid down my throat as mine did hers, sucking slightly as we left our marks.
Retracting my fangs, I watched. Sure enough, the swollen and bloodied mark turned, changing into a waning moon of a light purple that stood out greatly on Kagome’s skin.
She was watching my skin, her eyes wide and curious. Such a beautiful creature, I struggled to understand how she was mine. But as her bite turned into an arrow the same golden color of her doe form, there was no confusion.
The gods had accepted our mating.
Kdrama recs Part 2
Hello @camsthisky and anyone else who cares! I do apologize for the delay on this post--it has only been 84 years since Part I of my kdrama recs, I know, and I thought about going for a full century but this is me finding a way to de-stress after watching the first episode of I-Land alkdjfadlksj I’m gonna die of heartbreak but whatever
Speaking of heartbreak, there is a lot to be found in Korea’s wonderful historical dramas, so like, be warned—or, if you are an angst-loving monster like me, settle down for hot guys and good cries
Let us begin! (or, if you want romantic modern dramas see Part 1)
Tumblr media
1. Scarlet Heart Ryeo/Moonlovers:
aha ahahahahahaha *weeps* You may have heard people talk about this show. You may have heard ME talk about this show. This thing was my first kdrama ever and it RUINED ME
Disclaimer: I have seen this show once and rewatched it twice and on the rewatches I can never quite make myself watch the last 4 or 5 episodes because things get tragic and messy and I get mad. HOWEVER there is a lot of good in the first part of the show and because this thing was all the rage in everywhere but Korea itself, there’s like over 300 fanfic for it and several good fix-its, including one by my good friend @thelonelybrilliance
Ok so anyway this show which could also be called An Abundance of Princes starts with a young woman from modern times getting thrown back into ancient Goryeo during an eclipse and finds herself in the body of Hae Soo, the cousin of the wife of one of the princes, and thus she gets embroiled in royal affairs which are, quite frankly, a mess. See, the evil eyeliner prince (whom I love even when he’s the worst) is plotting with his mom to get the Crown Prince out of the way aka dead BUT who should return to the Palace but the 4th Prince, Wang So, who has spent at least half his life living as hostage to a powerful family.
So has a scar that cuts across his eye and which in this society makes him a horror to look at or smthing idk he just looks extra hot to me but anyway he wears a mask and is known as the wolf dog (or as the MURDER ANGST CUPCAKE thanks @abadpoetwithdreams). He might seem a little rough around the edges at first because his life has been hell but he really just wants to love and be loved okay people need to be nice to him wtf
Other princes include:
    1.  the Crown Prince, Wang Mu, a good egg, not particularly charismatic but he tried to protect his lil bro when no one else would
    2.  the 8th prince, Wang Wook, who reminds me of a fellow named Shane and I don’t mean the cowboy
    3.  the 10th prince, Wang Eun, a dumb adorable spoiled bby (played by Baekhyun from EXO)
    4.  the 13th prince, Baek Ah, a tol soft boi, an artist, a BAE, a BRO, a SHIPPER ON DECK
    5.  the 14th prince, Wang Jung this son will fight everyone he’ll fight himself he just loves to fight! Not always wise but he’s a good boy and I like him a lot
    6.  just realized I skipped the 9th prince but nobody cares
One quick note is that IU plays Hae Soo, and I enjoy her a lot in the first half of the show where she is still spunky and rebellious...sadly her character kind of falls apart/gets too weak for my liking as the episodes progress
The MAIN reason why I feel it my duty to recommend this show to everyone despite the fact I have never met anyone who wasn’t traumatized by it is LEE JOON GI
Yes, this man:
Tumblr media
 I mentioned him in the previous rec post—he played Bong Sang Pil in Lawless Lawyer (AND IS NOW CURRENTLY STARRING IN FLOWER OF EVIL WHICH WILL BE ON ANOTHER POST AHDFOIASDHGALDSKJF FRIQ I AM IN LOVE WITH THAT MAN)
BUT SERIOUSLY LOOK AT HIS PHOENIX EYES!!! HIS RAZOR SHARP FEATURES! HIS BIG ADORABLE EARS! HIS BEAUTIFUL EXCESSIVE BANGS! 4TH PRINCE WANG SO LOVE OF MY LIFE
Tumblr media
SOMEONE PROTECT THIS BBY
2. Hwarang: Ok so right off the bat I am going to smack down a disclaimer that I can’t stand the female lead. TRULY CANNOT. Thus, I don’t like the romance, and only care about the love triangle as far as it just shows how sad and lonely one of the guys is. (Also there are scenes of dumb old men plotting and I don’t like them either). At the end of the show, I am happy that the one guy is NOT stuck with the female lead as his wife. Good for you sir
Sounds like a show to steer clear of then, right? WRONG. This is a show that you skip through because the scenes that are good? Are GREAT
Picture this: It is the Silla era of Korea, and the queen is ruling as regent in place of her son, who has been hiding all his life because everyone wants to kill him. Well, son is now grown and must soon come into the light and take the throne. Queen who both wants her son as king but also really likes being queen decides to do everyone a favor and form an elite fighting squad out of all the prettiest and most talented sons of nobles in the land, with the idea that they will be loyal only to the throne, and thereby keep their dads from plotting to destroy everything.
Let me tell you something, these ARE the prettiest boys in the land. Good hair, good jawlines, beautiful smiles—the cast lineup includes Park Hyung Sik and his cute lil elf ear, Park Seo Joon, Taehyung (yes from BTS!), and Choi Minho from Shinee, plus two other actors who are lesser known but who are drop-dead gorgeous. Anyway. Sorry, but they really are all beautiful.
The fun thing is they don’t all get along right away, a few of them are VERY much opposed to the other for various reasons, but they all have to bond and become brothers in arms. And what they don’t know is that the real king snuck in and is one of them. 10/10 I would die for the boys! (also Tae has an older half-brother who is a lower rank than him but whom he looks up to and that makes for cuteness and pain) Once you skip the boring or annoying parts of the show, the rest has so much delight, laughter, and oops pain, lots of pain. I want to go re-watch.
Two other things I should mention about the show: a super soft side romance between secondary characters and a game of, as they call it in the show, HOT SOCCER
Tumblr media
^pretty boy 1 (with the cute elf ear sadly on the other side of his head)
Tumblr media
^pretty boy 2 (sad cheekbone bby) and pretty boy 3 (happy cheekbone bby)
Tumblr media
^pretty boy 4 (the prettiest of them all, and he knows it!)
Tumblr media
^pretty boy 5 (aka Taehyung danced around the set of a historical drama and made everyone adopt him as their bby)
3. Faith/The Great Doctor: This is a longer kdrama at 24 episodes and they didn’t have much of a budget so special effects aren’t the best or anything but I just got really attached to all the characters? This is another modern girl goes back in time but UNLIKE SHR it actually has a happy ending, so if you need a historical drama cleanse after that tearjerker/enrager, this could be it for you
Eun Soo has to navigate the ancient kingdom, keep people believing she is a heavenly doctor with special powers, and keep Choi Young alive so he can fulfill his promise of returning her to her own time. The problem with that is Choi Young does have kind of a death wish because of reasons—
Eun Soo is a plastic surgeon who would really like a rich handsome husband one day but them’s the breaks for you, aka she has had no luck in that department. Back in ancient Korea, Choi Young (played by Lee Minho in sadly the only role I really love him in) is a high-ranking beloved captain who can fall asleep anywhere. Oh he can also make electricity with his hands! :D
The story begins when the sleepy sad captain tries to escort the new king and queen to their palace. This was during the time period when ancient Korea was basically a puppet kingdom/tributary of ancient China (Yuan). The king (who is very smol and lacks confidence, but still has a good heart for his country) lived as a hostage in Yuan for many years, and his wise tol queen is a princess of that land, and someone needs to sit them down and make them talk because they actually love each other a lot. Anyway, when the queen gets injured by assassins, Choi Young goes searching for a legendary doctor, winds up in modern Korea, and steals both Eun Soo and a SWAT shield, because hey, it looked cool I guess
Lots of fun things in the show: Choi Young has a crew of soldiers who are BEYOND loyal to him, and while he doesn’t think much of the king at first because he’s been burned by kings before, they slowly become bros and shippers on deck for each other. Eun Soo does not lose her spunk or loyalty unlike other people I could mention *cough*HaeSoofromScarletHeartRyeo*, and it cracks me up when she curses people out. There are also a bunch of people (mostly bad guys) running around with special powers or gifts, including a flame lady and a flute boy, and the latter wears delightful anime wigs, keeps his sword in his flute, and plays his flute to kill—literally! I love flute boy very much
Tumblr media
sorry it’s black and white but DO YOU SEE THE SWAT SHIELD
4. My Country: A New Age:
ANGST ANGST ANGST PAAAAAIN BUT ALSO BEST INTRO BEST FAVES BEST ACTORS
Picture this: two young men, who both hail from childhoods of trauma, who grew up together and are best friends, and who are tragically forced apart and end up on opposite sides of a conflict that threatens to upend the current rule of the kingdom. This IS the star-crossed brotp you’ve been waiting for!
Seo Hwi is the son of a general who died a criminal, and all he wants is to live simply and earn enough rice take care of his younger sister, who has seizures and a sweet crush on Hwi’s bestie. Hwi is the best softest most loyal boy with a good and true heart, a great deal of courage, and a talent for wielding a sword, and just wait till you see the best one-shot fight scene ever of him in battle, it is INCREDIBLE! (He is played by Yang Se Jong, who I now want to see more of) Hwi has an abundance of charisma points in that he picks up a small band of loyal soldier friends and they become the best little found family, lots of brotp-ness in this crew—do not mess with any of them because they will all FIGHT you
Seon Ho meanwhile is the illegitimate despised son of a powerful nobleman, only tolerated because the legitimate son died. Seon Ho loves his friend and is very protective of his friend’s little sister who crushes on him but his dad is a high class grade A power-hungry jerk and that causes complications of course. Seon Ho also has a good heart, he’s a gentle soul really, but he always gets stuck in bad positions and unfortunately makes a couple of difficult/bad choices so he hardens himself as much as he can but the consequences always kill him and he just wants to save his friends and destroy his dad and the stupid hierarchy that treats bastards as lesser. WHY IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?
Seon Ho he is played by Woo Do Hwan who has so much talent I die so many times over in this show just because of the way he portrays Seon Ho like that sad sad boy is one of my favorite characters evER! Is he problematic? At times maybe but I am HERE for him he just needs LOVE AND AFFECTION AND AN ABUNDANCE OF GOOD FRIENDS BUT INSTEAD (SOMETIMES THRU HIS OWN FAULT BUT HE ADMITS THAT) HE JUST SUFFERS AND SO I SUFFERRRR
*grabs a towel and dries up my tears*
Hwi also falls in love with a woman named Hui Jae (or was it Hee Jae i can’t remember) and they are very cute together, she’s pretty cool but the show’s one failing is arguably that they kind of underuse her in the plot as the story goes on? But I still like her and she still has a good role, and she is both brave and kind and not afraid to step in or tell people off, also keep a weather eye open for patching up scenes!
Oh yeah, eVERYONE in this gets hurt/stabbed/shot/bloody, such a shame they have to take their shirts off to clean and bandage the wounds ;)
Last character I must mention is Bang Won, played by Jang Hyuk in his second interpretation of the historical figure. Bang Won is the fifth? son of the guy who becomes emperor/king, and he has his own plans for the country, so when Hwi catches his eye, he recruits him to his cause.  What you need to know about him is that he has issues with his dad, is slightly unhinged, and cannot and should not be parted from the fan that he constantly carries around with him. Gotta say, Jang Hyuk is FANTASTIC (heheheheheheh) in the role, able to convey all kinds of emotion in the rise and fall of his voice, in the tilt of his head, the tears of his eyes, the flick of his fan. Give this actor all the awards!
To sum up: if you like to cry for days after watching a drama, if you like excellent heart-wrenching brotps, if you like conflicted characters, if you like amazing music and setting and plot, if you like guys with good hair and arm muscles (and
abs, thank you shirtless scenes what) this show is a Must Watch
DID I SAY STAR-CROSSED BROTP I MEANT SWORD-CROSSED BROTP ADKJFADLSKJFLKJDFALKDGKLJL </3
~
Ok I was going to leave the historical drama post at this for now but...I’m going to cheat a little and include the one historical C!drama I just finished.Yes folks I am talking about:
5. Nirvana in Fire:
Ok so maybe the switch from kdrama to cdrama makes you uncertain. Maybe the fact that this show has FIFTY-FOUR EPISODES makes you go hell no I don’t have enough time for that. Well if you overlook this show for those reasons, you are making, and I do not exaggerate, the greatest mistake of your show-watching life!
Look, first, this drama has one of the best, most intricate, most satisfying plots in history, with like 20 characters you would die for, and second, the episodes are only about 42 minutes each, which is shorter than most kdrama episodes, so you can deal.
Once upon a time there was a general/family who were just too good to exist in corrupt old China, so naturally they were framed for treason and there was a giant massacre and everybody died, including the eldest prince who was like um dad maybe this is all a horrible mistake and the king was like no u are the mistake. Sad times.
One of the many younger princes named Jing (A NOBLE HEART, if not always the cleverest) returns home from wherever he was, finds out that not only did his prince brother die, but so did his best friend/brother in the whole wide world, Lin Shu, son of the general. Because he insists on the innocence of said bros/family, Jing becomes an outcast prince and is shuffled off to fight in wars where he can’t cause any trouble. Meanwhile, Princess Nihuang, Lin Shu’s brave, awesome, amazing, wise, incredible girlfriend, refuses to marry anyone else, and because she is too cool to be messed with, nobody tries to banish her
Cut to I think eleven years later, when the two most powerful princes are vying to be the crown prince and heir to the throne. They both try to recruit the aid of a renowned clever and sassy strategist named Mei Changsu, to help them with plotting and PR and such.
Well little do they know that Mei Changsu is actually the not-dead Lin Shu, with a completely new face (for reasons), and that Mei Changsu is a chess master setting up a long con for the dual purpose of obtaining revenge/justice for the dead and of raising Prince Jing to the throne, since Prince Jing is the only man with a good enough heart and strong enough will to make China a better place for all the people. But just to make it hard on everybody, Mei Changsu is dead set on not telling anyone who he really is—again, for reasons. He is not always successful in keeping his secret.
I literally don’t know what else to say because there is so MUCH to say, so many characters to love, and I mean LOVE. How do you get a cast this good? How is everyone so different yet so important? How do you feel bad for the emperor even when he’s slimy? How do you have to stop yourself from rooting for the prince who would destroy some of your faves? I can’t praise the charisma and acting talent in this show enough! And the music! IS GORGEOUS!
1 strategist too sassy for his own good and too clever for everyone else’s good + 1 prince who loves his mom and his dead best friend and his dead older brother more than anything else in the world + 1 gentle wise mom + 1 eternally loyal princess who would defend her loved ones with the sword if necessary + 1 sassy Elrond healer man + 1 grumpy sulky baby who loves being a better fighter than almost everyone + 1 loyal to the death, brave badass general who is going to have a stress breakdown if the strategist doesn’t take better care of himself + not 1 but 2 good boys who deserve to be protected but who are willing to throw themselves into battle if necessary + 1 antagonist tiger prince who I love and am not ashamed to say it = THE BEST OF TIMES
Tumblr media
George Luz stared off into the distance, his eyes, so typically full of life and warmth, now cold and distant. He had watched helplessly as Muck and Penkala's foxhole got hit, and since then, he hadn't said a word. They had found him trying to dig up the foxhole at the break of dawn.
You stared at him from aboveground, watching as George picked at a hole in his sleeve. His mouth was slightly agape, his breath coming out in little swirls.
"Luz," you heard Malarkey call for him, his voice intensely gentle. You knew he was hurting as well- Muck and Penkala were his best friends after all. At first, George didn't move, and you suspected he hadn't heard, but after a few breaths, he looked up at the two of you.
"Hey," he breathed, his eyes glassy, "Did you guys need something?" His voice was so soft, you could feel your heart breaking as well.
"No," you shook your head, crouching down to hand him a canteen filled with warm stew, "Domingus cooked us something up."
George stared at the canteen in your hands, seemingly zoning out. You waved it in front of him, watching him snap back into reality, cupping it with both hands. "You mind if I sit with you?" you whispered, and he nodded in response. You looked up at Donald who was just watching, and gave him a look that assured him that you could handle this. He smiled at you sadly, turning on his heel and leaving.
"You should eat while it's warm," you mumbled, jumping in the foxhole with him. George was back to staring off into the distance, making no move to eating the food in his hands. "It actually tastes good this time." After a considerable amount of urging, he brought the cold metal to his lips and took a sip. From the expression on his face, you gathered that it did not, in fact, taste good this time.
"This tastes like shit, Y/N," he mumbled halfheartedly, but continued eating anyway, "Like actual dog shit."
"Hey," you chuckled, trying to lighten the mood, "That's a good thing. The dog shit really brings out the flavour." George looked at you and made a gagging face, the most expression he had done all day.
"Don't say that to a man eating, love," he replied, but you saw a small smile form on his face.
You shrugged, resting your head on his shoulder, "I learned it from you."
"That you did."
The two of you sat in silence as he ate, the only sound coming from gunshots coming from the distance and the voices of the men as they sang behind you. Their songs were less joyous this time.
"You think I'll ever stop seeing their faces?" George suddenly asked, setting his empty canteen on the snow. His voice was barely above a whisper, and he leaned in to speak to you. Looking around to see if anyone was watching, you lowered your head as well.
You shook your head, answering honestly. His face fell sullen, his shoulders dropping. "You'll always remember their faces when we sat in the grass in France. Remember that?" you asked, using your finger to tilt up his chin. "Skip was telling a stupid joke about something as he always was, Penkala agreeing with his every word like it was the law." George sniffled.
"Or," you continued, turning your whole body so you were both facing each other, sitting with your legs crossed, "Back in Holland, when we had to completely peel poor Penkala off of that woman. Do you remember that?" He nodded slowly, he did remember. "You'll never forget, and maybe it'll haunt you forever, and that's okay. We're in this together. Pinky promise," you whispered, resting your forehead on his and extending your pinky towards him.
George exhaled and intertwined your pinky with his.
***
George leaned down to kiss you, wrapping his arms around your waist. You had made dinner that night, and was washing the dishes when he offered to do it himself. "I'll do it," he grinned, pushing you to the side with his hip, "You go upstairs and rest."
Despite how quickly he bounced back from everything, George never fully recovered from that night in Belgium. You rarely left him alone in the dark.
You pouted at him, but did as you were told anyway, watching his shadow from the staircase as he washed the dishes. It had been years after the war ended, and the two of you instantly moved in together. It just felt like the right thing to do, and besides, no one understood George Luz like you did.
He was hunched over the sink now, looking nowhere near like the man he was during the war. He was a lot older, a lot less skinny, and he always looked tired now. But who he was in Europe was still him, and it would be him forever. You bit your lip and headed up the stairs to prepare for bed.
As you laid in bed with a book in hand, you heard something crash downstairs. Rushing down, you spotted him on the ground, head in his hands, remnants of a broken plate by his feet. "George?" you called, rushing to him. You quickly brushed away the broken plate, and sat by him. He had tears streaming down his face.
You held his face in your hands briefly, and he quickly pulled away, turning from you. Instead, you wrapped your arms tightly around him. "I'm here. We're at home," you breathed slowly, "We just had a lovely dinner, you were just washing the dishes."
Sometimes, you both needed reminding that you weren't still in Europe. His shoulders trembled under you, and he clenched at your clothes as he cried. "I could have helped them," he cried, his lips trembling, "If I had called them out with me."
You shook your head fervently, lifting his head to look at you. "No, George," you said as he shut his eyes, "That's not your fault. There was nothing you could do. You did all you could."
"I could've saved them," he whispered against your hair, slowly calming down. He was no longer crying, but George still clung to you tightly.
"Maybe you could've," you replied, resting your cheek against his head, "But also think about all the other people you've saved in turn."
The two of you sat there, on the kitchen floor, illuminated only by the small lamp in the corner. You were both leaned up against the kitchen sink, hands intertwined, staring off into the distance like you had done many, many times since the war ended. You often got lost in thought during dark nights like these.
"I'm sorry," George said, a sigh escaping his lips, "I tried to fight it this time."
You looked at him and smiled, planting a gentle kiss on the tip of his nose. "That's alright," you extended your pinky towards him, "We all have those days. We're in this together, remember? Pinky promise."
George linked his pinky with yours, like he had done nearly a thousand times since that morning in Belgium.
Both of you had kept your promise and were in it, nightmares and attacks, together.
The Elevator Bae - 12
ONE TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN EIGHT NINE (1 , 2 , 3) TEN ELEVEN
Erik Stevens x Black OC (Phoenix)
A/N: Next chapter is finally done. Excuse any typos. Appreciate the reads and love from you guys.
Word Count: 5k +
Tumblr media
Being an Uncle and father figure to a four month old baby was like hitting the baby lotto. You could love the baby, buy the baby whatever they needed but the baby always went home. Well, that’s how TJ described it. He could be the father he knew he could be but without the 24/7 commitment. He loved it… way more than he thought he would. Since Luna was born, everyone’s home had turned into a baby playhouse. But TJ may have went overboard with toys, a swing and a ton of blankets to make sure his times with Luna were amazing.
Speaking of… Luna was on her way to his house. Coby and Phoenix had rehearsals for their tour and he agreed to watch her for the day. He had the day planned out. Car rides usually put Luna to sleep so he figured she’d still be asleep when she got there. She would nap for about an hour, she’ll enjoy a nice hearty bottle and they’ll turn up to some Baby Shark. The remix of course. At some point, Steph and Ken would show up and they’d all watch a Disney movie, trying to explain to Luna what was going on. Needless to say, this would be a good day with his favorite little human.
TJ rested on his couch when his doorbell rang. Luna was here! He didn’t even bother to check his doorbell camera. When he opened his front door, he wasn’t expecting to be looking at his long lost best friend. He clenched his jaw as a reaction to the anger he was now feeling. No words were exchanged. The two stared at each other. One looking for sympathy and the other looking for an explanation. TJ stepped aside and let his friend in.
Out of habit, Erik walked straight into the living room. TJ stopped just short of the couch. He watched as confusion stretched across Erik’s face. Erik turned to look at TJ. His mouth opened to speak but the sound of the doorbell cut him off.
“Shit.” TJ huffed. He rushed to the door. On the other side, Coby stood holding Luna’s car seat as she slept inside and a backpack diaper bag on his shoulder.
“Ain’t trying to drop and go man but I’m already late.” Coby says as he takes off the backpack, handing it to TJ. Coby catches TJ’s eye. Something wasn’t right. “You good, man?”
TJ motioned his head toward the home. Coby didn’t question it. He walked in and followed TJ into the living room. Coming face to face with Erik. He now understood why TJ was so tense.
“You gotta be fucking shitting me.” Coby barks. The booming of his voice scares Luna from her sleep and she starts crying. He sits the car seat down to unbuckle her. He cradled her to his chest, soothing her down. “I’m sorry, mama. I didn’t mean to yell.”
She cooed in his ear the more she settled down. Coby walked her over to her swing and turning it on low. He turned to TJ and Erik. He held his hands out, motioning for Erik to explain. The three of them sit and Erik begins to explain where hes been and why he left. TJ knew about his Wakadan ties but it took more details for Coby to understand.
“You mean to tell me,” Coby started, “Phoenix knew about your jobs but you couldn’t even tell her about this? I highly doubt she would’ve gave a damn about your old flame. She deserved to know, E. We all deserved to know.”
“I know that now. I mean- I knew that then too but-- Y’all know Phoenix like I know her. She would’ve tried to convince me otherwise.”
“And why is that a bad thing?” TJ asked. “Didn’t you just say  that you almost died? Was it worth it?”
“It wasn’t worth leaving her at all. But,” Erik paused. “The treatment I got after was.”
“So, you finally got the therapy I’ve been telling yo’ dumbass you needed for years.” TJ scoffs. “It just took a little stabby stab to the heart.” he says sarcastically.
That made Coby laugh. His phone started ringing in his pocket and when he checked to see who was calling, it was Phoenix. He jumped up and made his way to the hallway to take the call.
TJ looks over to Erik. Erik’s eyes were on Luna. She had fallen asleep in the swing as they all talked. “She doesn't seem real does she?” he asked. Erik simply shook his head No.
TJ goes over to Luna and picks her up. She stirs and begins to wake up. TJ bounces her as she fusses a little. “Hey, baby girl.” He sits her up on his arm, pointing to Erik. “Your daddy here.”
Erik straighten up on the couch as TJ walked over to him, handing him Luna. The smile that crept up on Erik’s face was contagious and Luna couldn’t help but smile back at him. Coby popped his head into the room and called for TJ. He left Erik to bond with his daughter.
“That was Phoenix.” Coby’s voice was low as he spoke. “She’s pissed.”
“You told her Erik’s here?”
“Hell nah! I told her something came up. But--”
“Yeah, we gotta tell her.” TJ shook his head.
“Yeah…” Coby paused, “She needs to know ASAP.”
The sounds of Luna’s dramatic cooing caught their ears as they discussed a plan to break the news to Phoenix. They made their way back to the living room to find Erik and Luna giggling. She was laid on his chest with one hand gripping the hair of his beard and the other waving in the air. Erik was blowing kisses on her cheeks. It was like they knew each other all along. Erik couldn’t deny the warmth in his heart looking at his seed. She was a spitting image of him. Having kids was something that never crossed Erik’s mind. He loved doing what made babies but Erik thought of himself as ‘too selfish’ to be anybody’s father. But this… this was way better than anything he could ever imagine. He met this baby an hour ago and already loved her more than he loved himself.
-----
After talking to Coby, Phoenix headed home to calm down. She was already exhausted from all of the work they had been putting in to prepare for their tour and this had sent her over the edge. Sis needed a nap and she’d be damned if she didn’t take advantage of rehearsals being canceled. She wasn’t sleep long before someone knocked twice on her bedroom door.
Its Coby. He looked concerned.
“I’m sorry to wake you, but uh, need to talk to you.” he stood by the side of her bed. She sat up and rubbed the sleep from her eye. He could see the exhaustion all over her. He really did feel bad for waking her. But this was important and it was best for this to come out now rather than later. Coby would be a dead man if Phoenix found out later about Erik’s return and Coby knew.
“I need you to come downstairs.”
Phoenix cut her eye at him. “For what?”
“Phoenix, I’m really not trying to fight with you.”
“I’m not trying to fight either. I’m trying to sleep.”
They both let out deep breathes.
“It’s really important, Philly. I need you to come downstairs.”
Phoenix’s eyes go big. “Where’s Luna!” she jumped up from the bed. Coby grabbed her before she went flying out of the room.
“Luna is fine. Ava has her. It’s um,” he hesitated. Debating if he should just tell her. “It’s about Erik.”
Phoenix took a step back, searching his eyes. Her breathing picked up and her mind traveled to the worse case scenario. Coby was breaking the news that Erik was dead. She just knew it. She rushed passed him, going downstairs. Coby chased after her.
“Phoenix!” he called to her.
She was quick on her feet. She ran downstairs on the hunt for Luna and Ava. As she made her way to the kitchen, Coby grabbed her arm pulling her back near the staircase.
“Phoenix! C’mere.”
“I just want my baby, Coby.”
“I need you to listen to me. Okay?” he gripped her shoulders. He could see the tears already threatening to fall. Phoenix could see movement outside the frosted windows on both sides of the front door. She pulled away from Coby and quickly ran to the door, swinging it open. She lost her breath as her eyes landed on him. Erik stood down on the walkway and TJ stood before him, closer to the door. She was speechless. Tears poured down her face. TJ stepped aside as she slowly began walking toward Erik. Gloss covered his eyes as he watched her come to him. He didn’t know what to do or what to say. He parted his lips but nothing came out. His body became tense and hands shook. He didn’t even catch her fist coming at him. Not once but twice. She gave him a two piece combo to the face. He stumbles back, holding his face. TJ rushed to grab her.
“Philly!”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” she yelled. She broke free from TJ’s hold, swinging to hit Erik again. This time he dogged her fist.
“Phoenix…” his voice low and desperate.
“Fuck you, Erik!” TJ and Coby struggle to grab hold of Phoenix as she swings at her target. Coby scoops her up from behind and Phoenix kicks her feet up, jabbing Erik right in the chest. “You piece of shit. I HATE YOU!”
I Hate You! the three words that Erik feared hearing the most. “Phoenix, please. Can you just talk to me?” he pleaded.
“Fuck You! You left me!”
Coby has a death grip on Phoenix, making sure he doesn’t lose her. He tries to get her back into the house. Ava is approaching with Luna to see what in the hell is going on. All she could see as she comes closer to the door is a screaming and kicking Phoenix. When she looks through the door and sees Erik, she fully understands. “What the fuck is he doing here?” she spat.
The loud commotion is too much for baby Luna. She is screaming just as loud as Phoenix.
“Go back in the house, Ava. Take her back in the house.” Coby demands. Ava doesn’t listen. She continues to protest against Erik’s presence.
“This nigga can’t be serious. Where the fuck have you been Erik?”
None of this is going how any of the men hoped. They discussed this plan at TJ house and figured it would go a lot smoother than this. They wanted to bring Phoenix downstairs and Coby would break the news before allowing TJ to bring Erik in and he would tell his side of the story. This was a nightmare. There’s tears, screams and punches being thrown and everyone involved was overwhelmed.
Coby manages to get Phoenix into the house. She fights him. She wants him to let her go so she can finish releasing this ass whooping onto Erik. He deserved it, she thought. How dare he leave her without a trace and be gone for a year.
TJ pulled Erik back to the car. “C’mon man. This ain’t working.”
“Nah, fuck that. I’m not leaving here without talking to her.”
“She just busted your fucking lip, bro. She ain’t trying to talk to you.”
Erik wipes the small bits of blood from his lip. “Fuck!” he yells out.
“Aye, get in the car man. I’ma figure this out.” TJ goes back toward the house. When he opens the door, he finds Coby still taking hits from Phoenix and now Ava was tag teaming him with her own harsh words. Coby was doing his best at keeping his cool with two women yelling at him over a screaming baby.
Coby grabs Phoenix’s hands after her last push made him stumble back a bit. “Chill the fuck out. I know you mad--”
“Mad? Fuck mad! I’m pissed, Coby. Where has this nigga been? FOR A YEAR?” Phoenix added emphasis on her last three words.
“And why did you bring his ass here? Was that smart to you?” Ava added.
Coby cut his eye at Ava. TJ tries to grab Luna from Ava’s arms but she stopped him. “No. You can get the fuck on too. That’s your boy. I know you knew about this.”
“No I didn’t.”
“He found out five minutes before I did. Chill.” Coby interjected. He had lost his patience with all the yelling. “Both of yall need to shut the hell up and listen.”
The women were taken aback by this. So much so, they actually were silent and listening as Coby continued. “The nigga told me and TJ everything and we both agreed it was best to bring him straight to you. Or would you rather have this nigga be back for days and I knew and didn’t tell you.”
Phoenix couldn’t look at Coby. She knew he was right. “Yeah. I would’ve been pissed.”
“Nah, I’m not buying it.” Ava says. “Where has he been?”
TJ let out a deep, agitated breath. “He went to his home country.”
“Home country?” Ava questions. She looks at Phoenix. “This nigga ain’t from here? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Ava, stop.” Phoenix takes Luna from Ava. Luna’s cries calm down but her lips are still turned down in a frown. Phoenix rocks her and rubs her baby’s head. “I need a minute.”
Phoenix walks away, leaving Coby, Ava and TJ to watch her fade away up the stairs with Luna. Moments later, they hear her bedroom door slam.
Before Ava could get out whatever crazy thing she was about to say, Coby shook his head. “Nope. Don’t you say shit. Don’t say nothing for the rest of the day. If I hear you say one more word today, you will be sleeping on the couch. I am not playing with you. Ol’ yelling ass.”
Ava just stood there with her mouth open in shock. She closed her mouth and stormed up the stairs, mumbling under her breath. “He got me messed up. If I wanna talk, I bet I do that.”
TJ tries to hold back his laughter. Coby drags his hands over his face. Their eyes meet. “Do me a favor,” Coby says, “Don’t ever give your house up to two women and a baby. You will lose every time. This not even my house no more. I’m a guest.”
TJ couldn’t hold it in any longer and let his laughter ring out. Coby joined him.
“Only woman allowed on my property is Luna.”
“By the time she hits five, I bet you change your mind.” Coby huffed out a deep sigh. “But yeah man, seems like Philly got all of her knuckle sandwiches out so I’m gonna talk to her. Try to get her to talk Erik’s goofy ass.”
“Alright. I have to go get this big nigga some bandaids. Phoenix just gave him a good Detroit ass whooping.”
They both fall over in laughter.
“She did bust his shit.”
“Alright man, you play too much.” TJ gives Coby the ‘nigga handshake’ and heads out the door.
Coby wanted the energy in the house to settle a lot more before talking about Erik again. He went into his studio and decided this was the safest place in the house for him to be.
---------
Hours had gone by and Coby was still in the studio. The door creaked open and Phoenix slid inside with a plate of food. Coby didn’t say anything. He wasn’t sure if he should.
“Hey.” Phoenix sat down next to him. She held the plate out like it was a peace offering. He smiled at her and took the plate. “Ava said you told her not to talk so she said she wasn’t bring yo’ ass no food.” she ended her words with a soft smile.
Coby looked Phoenix over. He could tell she did more crying after going to her room. Her eyes were puffy and her nose still slightly red. “Yeah, she be talking too much.”
“You know Ava.” Phoenix shrugged. She looked around as if she’s never seen the studio before. She wanted to say something… or ask something. Coby dug into his dinner while he waited for her to just say what was on her mind.
“So,” she started, “How is he?” Her eyes finally met his.
“He’s good. Despite what he’s been through.”
“What happened?”
“Honestly, Philly, I think you should just talk to him.”
Phoenix shook her head. “I wanna hear it from you. I have to, Coby. Please.” she sounded desperate.
Coby sat back in thought. “If I tell you, you have to promise me that at some point, you’ll go talk to him yourself.”
“Okay.”
----------
The next day, Phoenix struggled getting out of bed. She didn’t get much sleep the night before. Her brain kept going over what Coby told her happened with Erik. She was definitely still pissed that he left with no warning but parts of her were hurting. He had told her about his dad being killed by the ‘paws’ of his brother but she didn’t know about his mom. Erik mentioned being royalty and how Wakanda was way more advanced than they lead the world to believe but if we’re being honest, Phoenix thought he was being a bit dramatic. She still didn’t regret whooping on him and she didn’t regret how she felt. She just had more feelings than before. She had promised to talk to him but she needed to talk to someone else first.
Phoenix texted her therapist.
Phoenix: Good Morning Dr. McKee. Do you have any sessions open today?
Dr. McKee texted back within minutes.
Dr. McKee: Good Morning Phoenix. Yes. I have an hour open at 1:00. Is everything okay?
Phoenix: … Erik’s back.
--------
Phoenix struggled with finding the words to answer Dr. McKee’s questions. Was she mad that Erik came back? How does his return change things? She wasn’t sure how to feel about the feelings coming up with those questions.
“I’m… I’m not mad. I wanted him to come back. I guess, I just didn’t think he would. I told myself he wouldn’t. I pushed through that shit and my life is back on track.”
“Do you think him being back will throw you off track again?” Dr. McKee asks so casually.
“I--I don’t know.”
“Do you think this could be about Luna?”
Phoenix looks up at Dr. McKee. Her therapist always had a way of saying things that Phoenix was thinking but wasn’t sure about saying.
“I can’t let Erik do this to her. He can’t make my baby love him and then just leave her. I can take it. But not her.”
Dr. McKee wrote down some notes. “Let’s talk about that. How can Erik’s return change things for you and Luna.”
“Okay,” Phoenix adjusted her position on the couch. “I had to relearn my life without him while growing his child at the same time. I had to tell myself that my baby can’t be punished for what he did. My entire pregnancy I had to battle those feelings. Will I love my baby? Will I hate my baby? Will she be just like him? Will she get older and leave me too?” Phoenix covered her face with her hands. “Luna is my baby. That little girl is my life. When she was born and I looked at her… I didn’t even think about Erik. My first thought was, how can I give this little human the world? After seeing Erik yesterday, I look at Luna and I think, how am I going to protect her?”
“Remember what I told you, Phoenix. Mother’s always figure it out.”
--------
Phoenix looked at the text from Coby, almost biting blood from her bottom lip. After therapy, she asked him for Erik’s number. She promised him she’d try to talk to Erik. She had just promised her therapist too. Nervous was an understatement. Her palms were so sweaty, they dripped onto the back of her sleeping infant laying her chest. Just do it already, she thought to herself.
Phoenix: Hey, this is Phoenix. Are you available to talk some time today?
The moment she hit send, she closed her eyes shut. She wasn’t expecting him to respond as fast as he did. She was shocked when her phone vibrated seconds later.
Erik: yes.
She wrecked her brain trying to come up with something to say back. Talking to Erik use to be so easy and fun and now it felt forced and tense. He texted her again with an address. She copied it into google and a beautiful, luxurious apartment building popped up. This one was 10x better than the one they lived in before. She was kind of curious on how in the hell he was able to get a nice place like this in less than 24 hours. But that wasn’t any of her business right now. She needed to get up to go meet up with him.
Phoenix packed Luna’s diaper bag and began her journey to Erik’s. The ride seemed way longer than it actually was. Phoenix focused on taking deep breaths the entire way. She kept feeling as if she would have a panic attack. Her heart was pounding fast and her stomach was in knots.
When she arrived, Phoenix sat in her car, parked for a moment. She took this moment to go over everything she wanted to say to Erik one last time before it was show time. She got Luna from the backseat and laid her in her stroller and made her way through the front doors of the building. She stood around looking before she realized that she didn’t even know what floor she was going to. She called Erik.
“Hello?” his voice was raspy. Like maybe he was sleeping or just really relaxed. The familiar sound brought back memories.
“Hey, uh, I’m here. I’m inside near the leasing office.”
She could hear him clearing his throat. There were faint voices in the background. “Okay. I’m coming down to get you.”
“Okay.” she hung up. Who else could be up there?
--------
Phoenix was so caught up in giggling with Luna that she didn’t even notice Erik approach her.
“Phoenix?”
She looked up, almost shocked that someone would be calling her name. She snapped back into reality when she saw him. This time she actually looked at him. His dreads were longer, pulled back into a ponytail. His beard was fuller and he wore those signature gold frames. He looked bigger and she really didn’t think his buff ass could get any bigger than he was before.
“Hey, sorry. It’s her world. I just live in it.”
“It’s fine.” He looks down at Luna who is chewing away at her little fist. She’s making the cutest little sounds that make Erik smile. “C’mon.”
She begins pushing the stroller and Erik offers to push it for her. She allowed him to do so. She followed him to the large elevators. The doors opened immediately after Erik pushed the call button. They were the only ones to step inside. As the doors shut, Luna’s babbling filled the cabin, killing off some of the awkwardness that rested between her parents.
“Seems like she has a lot to say.” Erik says.
“Oh you have no idea. This is how she whispers.”
Both of them had to laugh at that. For a moment, things felt normal. Like how they use to be. Just then Luna let out a playful scream.
“Spoke too soon.” Erik laughs.
The doors open directly into a beautiful, fully furnished penthouse apartment. Erik pushed the stroller into the foyer and Phoenix follows. Voices were coming from the kitchen and before Phoenix knew it, a young girl was storming in, all smiles.
“Hi. You must be Phoenix. I’m Shuri.”
Phoenix wasn’t sure how to react. “Hi,” she nervously said. “Yeah, I’m Phoenix.” She looked to Erik for an explanation.
He looked annoyed. “This is my cousin.”
“Your cousin?”
“Hello, Phoenix.” T’Challa came around from the kitchen, greeting her. “Nice to officially meet you. I’m T’Challa.”
Shocked, her eyes grew wide and her mouth became dry. “T’Challa? As in King T’Challa?”
“Yes.” he grabbed her hand, kissing the back of it.
“Hi…”
“Alright,” Erik interjected. “Enough of all that shit.” he cut his eye at T’Challa who smirked at him. T’Challa found his jealousy amusing.
Shuri was making faces at Luna which had Luna giggling very loudly. “Oh my Bast. She’s so cute. Can I hold her?” Shuri looked between Erik and Phoenix. Erik looks to Phoenix.
“Yeah, sure.” Phoenix was a bit hesitant but agreed. Shuri looked way too excited and she wouldn’t be the one to kill the young princess’s dreams. She unbuckled Luna from her stroller and carefully handed her to Shuri. Phoenix fished for a bottle from the diaper bag. “She may be hungry. Just in case.”
Shuri retreated into an area that Phoenix couldn’t see but she wanted to trust that her baby would be okay. She fidgeted with her fingers. T’Challa took notice.
“She’ll be fine. Shuri loves babies.”
Phoenix nodded and took in a calming breath. She looked at Erik. The look in his eyes confirmed what T’Challa said. Luna would be okay.
“I’ll let you two talk. I’ll keep an eye on Shuri and Luna.” T’Challa disappeared around the same wall as Shuri.
Erik lead them into his living room. Phoenix took in all of the dark interior. This place was a lot different than his old penthouse. He had dark wooden floors. Mostly black and dark grey furniture. His walls were grey. Everything about this place was more cool and calm. Maybe this place was a way to reflect his mood now. There wasn’t any flashy art pieces. She knew the furniture and decor was expensive because Erik liked expensive things but you couldn’t tell. This space was way more ‘homey’ and she liked it.
They were both silent for the first few seconds of sitting on the couch. Erik cleared his throat and began to speak when Phoenix cut him off.
“I don’t hate you.” She watched his expression change. He relaxed a bit at her words. “I hate what you did. I hate how you did it. So, um, sorry for that. I was mad. But,” she paused, “I’m not sorry for hitting you. I meant that shit. If I could’ve knocked yo’ ass out, I would have.”
She could see that he was thinking of something smart to say. She gave him a challenging look, trying to gage if he would actually say what was on his mind. He didn’t. This wasn’t the time for smart remarks. He just blinked at her and nodded.
“I’m sorry, Phoenix. For all of it.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I owe you the whole truth, so I’m going to give you that.” Erik rubbed his palms on his jeans. “The closer we got, the more I realized that I was falling in love with you, the more I stopped giving a fuck about Wakanda. You had become everything that I needed. I was losing the desire to ever go there. I didn’t tell you but I actually didn’t plan on doing anymore missions. You were planning your tour and I wanted-- I needed to be there. I needed to be everywhere that you were. So, when I got the phone call about a job that I knew would lead me to Wakanda, I thought it was a sign. A reminder that I fell off track. Telling you would mean making a choice.”
“A choice? About what?” Phoenix questioned.
“Deciding what life I wanted. To hold on to my old one or let go of that and fully step into my new one. I loved my life with you but there was a part of me that felt like I was betraying myself. All of the shit I did to get to Wakanda would’ve been for nothing. All of the lives.” he whispered that last part. “I thought I could do both. Go after what I worked so hard for and when that was done, I could still have you. I didn’t, for one moment, think it would turn out like this.”
Phoenix didn’t have any words. She just watched him and studied the different emotions dance in his eyes.
“I thought about you every single day. I asked about you. But… they wouldn’t tell me anything. At first anyway. I went through death and a lot of therapy. I needed that shit though. So I guess, through all the bullshit some good came of it. I’m not same Erik I was before.”
“I can tell.”
Erik was grateful that she could see his progress.
“Like I said, E, I hate that you left me. That shit hurt. Only to find out that I’m pregnant.” Phoenix stopped. Tears threatened to fall but she held them in. “I didn’t want her. I didn’t want anything that would remind me of you. I wanted an abortion.”
Hurt flashed across Erik’s face. She continued, “but something… maybe God, I don’t know. But, I didn’t. She ended up being everything I needed to get up everyday.”
Silence sat between them for a moment.
“I still love you, Phoenix.”
Erik’s words caught her off guard.
“And believe it or not, I’m already head over heels for Luna.”
Phoenix smiles softly. “It’s kinda hard to not love that little nugget.”
Phoenix’s phone starts to ring. It’s Alyssa. She answers. Erik waits nervously for her to end her call. Phoenix huffed has she pressed the red button.
“I’m sorry. Me and Coby have rehearsals and I have to get Luna to the babysitter.”
“Babysitter?”
Phoenix stares blankly at Erik. She was confused. “Yea…”
“You’re not comfortable with her staying with me?”
She understood now. “Oh, uh, I--”
“No pressure. I get it. I’m new here.”
“No, Erik. I didn’t-- I think it would be good for you to keep her. I’m sorry.”
“Phoenix.” he grabbed both her hands. Her palms were sweaty. They’d always get sweaty when she was anxious. “Calm down. I didn’t take offense to it. I get it. I just got back in here.” he smiled at her. “I would love to spend some time with my daughter.”
‘My daughter.’ Those two words sent a wave of tenderness through Phoenix. The person that she shares this daughter with is here. Finally. She would be lying if she said she wasn’t relieved to finally share this moment with him. This was all she wanted. For the three of them to be together. To have moments like this. Him spending time with Luna while she worked. Them being together, being some kind of a family.
“Okay.” she stood, “I’ll come get her when I’m done.”
“Nah, I’ll bring her home. I wanna get as much time as I can.”
Erik walked Phoenix to the doors of the elevator.
“Wait,” she turned to him. “You don’t have a car seat.”
The dimples Phoenix didn’t realize she missed so much popped into Erik’s cheeks. “I can get a car seat, Philly. I got this, okay?”
“Okay, but I need to say goodbye to her.”
Erik called Shuri to bring Luna. Phoenix covered Luna’s face in kisses. Erik instantly fell in love with the sight of the love of his life and his daughter having such a beautiful moment. This was his choice. This is the life he wanted. There wasn’t anything else he wanted but them. He felt good about their talk and about how the future could look for them. Phoenix handed Luna to Erik and he watched as the elevator doors closed and she was off to rehearsals. For the next few hours, he would get to know his beautiful baby girl.
---------
It was late when Phoenix and Coby finished rehearsals. They had finally reached an agreement on how their set would go from start to finish. It took a lot longer than they had expected. Phoenix sent Erik updates on what time she’d be home for him to bring Luna home.
During her time rehearsing and her drive home, she found her mind drifting off. She would be thinking about Erik, Luna and how things would be now that he’s back. She felt better after their talk but there was still something weighing on her. He hurt her. He hurt in ways she never imagined was real. She’d been doing well in therapy but him coming back, opened so many wounds. He apologized but the pain just didn’t subside the way she thought it would. It was like it was as fresh as the day he left. This wasn’t something she could just let go. She couldn’t picture a future with Erik like this.
Erik called her to inform her that he was outside with Luna and she met him at the door. The smile on his face as he approached the door made her soul ache because she knew it wouldn’t last.
She took Luna and held the door for Erik as he carried her stroller in.
“Hey, E. Can we talk?” she motioned her head to the living room area.
“Yeah.” he followed her and they took a seat.
Phoenix placed some loving kisses on Luna’s sleeping face. She was stalling and Erik knew it. He eyed her carefully trying to read what she was thinking.
“What’s up Phoenix?”
She finally looked at him. She took a few slow breaths bracing herself for what she had to tell him.
“Um… I was thinking. I really appreciate everything you said earlier.” she tried to push a smile to ease the sting that was coming. “And I want you to know that I still love you too. But…”
Erik could feel his chest sinking. He looked away from her. His eyes burned a hole in the floor.
“I can’t. I want nothing for us but to put this behind us and be a family but this hurts. Seeing you standing outside after a year just took me back to the day you left me. That shit broke me, E. It’s hard to look at you.”
The sniffle that Phoenix heard from Erik let her know that he was crying. His head still hung low, eyes on the ground. He wouldn’t let her see him cry. Not like this.
“I’m sorry Erik. I just want us to focus on Luna. Get us a schedule for her. Work something out for my tour. She’s the priority.”
“That’s cool.” Erik stood up.
“Erik…” she held Luna into her chest and stood after him.
He wiped a hand over her face. “I understand Phoenix. I do. We can talk tomorrow about when I can get her.”
He left out the front door. Phoenix watched him get into his car and pull out of the driveway. It was hard to do but she knew it was for the best.
Whumptober Day 31: Halloween
Fandom: Ace Attorney
Characters: [2001 Half] Gregory Edgeworth, Raymond Shields / [2021 Half] Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth, Trucy Wright
Notes: Two Halloweens, Two Defense Attorneys, Two Decades Apart. Last day so we’re going to town. Two whumps for the price of one! In the first half, you’ll find some Gregory content. For the second, you’ll see everyone’s favorite disbarred hobo dad. It really is Real DILF Hours this fine Halloween.
                                                   --October 31, 2001--
“Thank you again, Mrs. Wright. You kids have fun!” Gregory watched the group of trick-or-treaters go on their way. It felt almost like a dream to know his son was in that group, trick-or-treating with real friends. For past Halloweens, Gregory and Miles would stay in and read something together until deciding to watch It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown together before usually falling asleep on the couch. While he was more than proud of his son making friends, Gregory felt a little sad when his son told him he would be out.
It was only when Gregory woke up the morning before with a persistent tickle in his throat that he was actually grateful to be the only one at home for the holiday, for at least a few hours. For a moment, he assumed it was simply the doing of Fall allergies, and perhaps some of it was, but the steadily rising feeling of malaise started to tip him off. By the time he was seeing his son off with his group of friends, he was more than ready to turn in for the night at 6:30PM.
Gregory closed the door slowly so he could triple check that the group was traveling safely. Despite having kept a close eye out on his surroundings, he failed to notice a familiar face approaching his home. He thought he could easily resign himself to some cold medicine and an early night until he heard the turning of a doorknob.
“Miles? Is that you?” He called as far as his hoarse voice could reach.
“No, it’s me, Mr. Edgeworth!” Ray twirled a keychain around and bit into a chocolate bar. “You gave me your spare key, remember? When I helped you bring in that big bag of dog food? Or was it when you had shingles? I forget.”
“Neither.” Gregory shook his head. “I gave you the spare key that time you watched Miles when I had that date.”
“O-Oh, right. How did that go, by the way?”
“Not great. The movie was awful and she demanded a refund after it was over. I don’t think I’ll be going out with anyone on the PTA again.” Gregory coughed a few times in his elbow before noticing what Ray was eating. “Where did you get that?”
“From your candy bowl.”
“Did you take just one like the sign said?”
Ray shrugged as he pulled about four more chocolate bars from his coat pockets.
“You should really be handing out the candy to prevent this kind of miscommunication.”
“I’m coming down with a cold, so I think I’ll pass.” Gregory took Ray’s coat to hang on the coat rack, if only to prevent more candy smuggling. “I’m surprised you’re not trick-or-treating.”
“I wanted to spend time with you, Mr. Edgeworth. You said you’ll be staying inside alone this year.” Ray helped himself to the living room couch, pleased to greet the pomeranian lounging there. “Hey, Missile!” He made kissing faces at the pup. “I guess not too alone.”
“Don’t let him lick your face while you have chocolate all over.” Gregory called the dog over to him. “You can rinse your face in the bathroom, and could you bring me the cold medicine from the cabinet?”
“Of course, Mr. Edgeworth!”
“Thank you.” Gregory stole Ray’s spot on the couch and let Missile hop on his lap. Just sitting down was more rest than Gregory had let himself have all day. He looked up to watch Ray return from the bathroom, somehow having gotten his hands on a lollipop.
“How come you’re not using Coldkiller X?” Ray tossed the requested medicine into Gregory’s lap. “It’s been flying off the shelves since it came out; it’s a real hit.”
“I prefer my usual NyQuil. I’d rather sleep through my colds.”
“You do look like you could use some sleep, Mr. Edgeworth.” Ray wiggled the lollipop stick around in his mouth. “Also, I think it’s really cool you put candy all around your house for Halloween.”
“What do you mean?” Gregory furrowed his brow.
“These lollipops in your bathroom.” He pulled out the stick to reveal a purple teddy bear pop. “It kinda makes my mouth feel funny, though. I think I’m allergic to something in it.”
“Raymond, that’s--,” Gregory sighed and put his head in his hands, “medicated. It has an anesthetic in it.”
“Oh, huh.” Ray stared at the lollipop before offering it to Gregory. “Do you want it?”
“No, thank you.” Gregory found the offer to be both amusing and repulsive. “I think I’ll be fine just having some tea.” He ushered Missile to direct some affection towards Ray so he could stand up. “Do you want any?”
“Just water is fine.” Ray rubbed his tongue against his front teeth. “I don’t think anything else would taste good right now.”
“At least that means you won’t be stealing any more candy.” Gregory chuckled as he proceeded to start the stove under the kettle. “I also shouldn’t have to tell you that you shouldn’t be eating things from a medicine cabinet.”
“Got it. ‘Don’t eat candy from the medicine cabinet.’” Ray read aloud from his notepad before eating the page he just wrote on.
“I feel like I should be concerned that you needed to write that down.” To say nothing of Ray’s paper eating habit, which Gregory stopped questioning after six months into Ray working part-time at the firm. He wanted to say Ray had matured since he had hired him, but it was likely more familiarity with his antics than anything. “Do you want any ice in your water?” Gregory opened the refrigerator door and leaned forward, reaching for the pitcher of water.
“No, that’s fine.” Ray answered, not looking away from Missile, who was staring at him with wide eyes. “Who’s a good boy?”
“I’d like to think I am.” Gregory laughed before standing upright again. Having his head at any angle outside of a very specific range when he had a cold always gave him a head-rush. “AE’SSHHOOUH! Eh’KXNT...chooh” He stifled the second one so Ray wouldn’t say anything about trying to scare him. With it being Halloween, the potential for comments like that was abundant.
“Bless you, Mr. Edgeworth.” In truth, Ray was hardly paying enough attention to really say anything; he was too busy scratching behind Missile’s ears. “You’re such a cool dad, keeping this cutie.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever been called ‘cool’ before, at least not sincerely.” Gregory tugged a tissue from the box on the kitchen counter and gently held it under his nose.
“R-Really? Not even about all your Star Wars stuff?”
“That stuff is exactly--,” Gregory used the tissue to muffle some coughs, “exactly what made me not cool. I only had one friend in high school, and that was Miles’s mother.” He always felt some pain in his chest bringing her up, but he was too caught up in the memory to stop himself. “She was homeschooled before she transferred, so she didn’t really care if I was ‘cool’ or not.” He dropped the tissue into the trash bin before he opened a cupboard and grabbed two plain blue mugs. Cold water in a mug wasn’t a faux pas, was it?
“Are you feverish enough to finally tell me about her?”
“This cold’s only just started, so no.” Gregory shut off the stove once he saw the steam leaving the kettle. As nice as it would be to have savored that, he didn’t want to keep Ray waiting for his water. “But I guess I can’t avoid talking about Marie forever.” He coated his own mug’s base with honey before topping it with a tea bag. He had no idea exactly what kind of tea it was; he only bought the types his son wrote on the grocery list in skillful handwriting absolutely not inherited from Gregory.
Naturally, when Gregory returned to the living room with both beverages, Ray had reclaimed the seat he had rightfully stolen.  He set Ray’s drink on the coffee table in front of the sofa before finding himself a new seat next to him.
“So, what was she like?” Ray took a long sip of his water, hoping to wash out the anesthetic.
“Well, for starters, she was my best friend for over ten years.” Gregory moved the tea bag up and down by the string. “She transferred to my high school just after her parents separated. She moved with her dad all the way from the middle of nowhere, so we were both in the same ‘no friends’ boat.”
“Did you two realize the one you loved was right in front of you? Like in a movie?”
“Ah,” Gregory didn’t look up from his mug, “just one of us did. She didn’t feel the same way about me.”
“B-But you guys had a kid together! There had to be something there.” Ray’s jaw dropped when he saw Gregory shake his head.
“I only realized I loved her after we, uh,” Gregory coughed awkwardly, “you know. I told her and that just ruined everything we had. The last time I saw her before she died was the day she dropped off Miles.”
“Oh, huh.” Ray felt himself tearing up. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s not that much of a tearjerker, I promise. I have a son I couldn’t be more proud of. I wouldn’t trade him for the world, even if it meant having Marie in my life for a few extra years.”
“Wha?’ Ray wiped some tears from his eyes. “I’m not that sad. I just, uh, lost an eyelash. Let me find it so I can make a wish.” He grabbed a tissue from the box on the coffee table to pretend he was searching for that ‘eyelash.’
“Hey, it’s definitely not the time to waste those.” Gregory scolded in jest before taking his own tissue for actual use. “E’kXTT… chuh.” That particular stifle made his head pound.
“It’s Halloween, Mr. Edgeworth. It’s okay if you startle me.” Of course. Why did Gregory think he could get away so easily? “I don’t know how you can hold those in. It was pretty impressive when you did ten of those last month.”
“I wasd’t about to let you bake jokes for the rest of your shift.” Gregory blew his nose forcefully, displeased at the amount of time it took to really feel any benefit.
“To think I just called you cool.” Ray teased. “I still think you’re cool, though. You made your son’s costume, didn’t you? Signal Red?”
“Indeed I did.” Gregory nodded. He figured his drink had cooled enough to chase down the cold medicine Ray retrieved earlier. “I stayed up all night making it.” He cleared his throat and made a face in reaction to the unfavorable taste of the medicated liquid. “Two nights, actually.”
“No wonder you’re sick. You work too hard and never sleep.” So was that why Ray seemed immune to colds?
“Once this kicks in, I’ll be sleeping like the dead.” Gregory leaned back. “You can watch TV if you want. Take the remote or a VHS.”
“Woah, really?” Ray made himself at home in front of the VHS shelves with Missile following behind him. “You wanna help me pick out a movie, boy?”
“Just not any movies about a dog. Otherwise, he’ll bark at the screen.”
“Aw, that’s cute! Let’s watch Air Bud, then.”
Thank god for NyQuil.
                                                    --October 31, 2021--
      Phoenix was woken up by the sound of footsteps on the entryway’s tile floor accompanied by the excited listing of various candies. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes to take a look at the wall clock. 9:30PM. Miles and Trucy returned an hour late, but it sounded like they had a good time.
“Daddy! We got so much candy! Are you feeling better? Papa Miles said you should eat something healthy, but I won’t tell!” It was as if Trucy didn’t even need to stop to breathe while speaking.
“Trucy, your father needs to rest.” Miles, who had at least stopped to leave his coat on the rack, needed to catch his breath. “Sorry to wake you, love. I hope you got some sleep since we left.”
“I slept great, yeah. Did you two have a good tibe?” Phoenix looked up at Miles with glassy eyes and a tired smile.
“We had a wonderful time, but we missed you. It’s a shame you were too sick to come with us.” Miles glanced at the empty bowl and mug on the coffee table. “So you finally ate something?”
“Does that mean Daddy can have some of our candy now?” Trucy lifted her heavy pumpkin shaped basket. “He ate something healthy!”
“Not tonight, I don’t think. Why don’t you change into your pajamas and get ready for bed?” Miles pointed at his watch. “We already came home late.”
“Aw, okay.” Trucy pouted and dragged her feet walking to her bedroom.
Phoenix watched her leave and then frowned at Miles.
“What’s that look for?”
“You’re doh fud.” Phoenix sniffled.
“You were the one who wanted me to be more authoritative with her.” Miles was right; every time Trucy wanted something, she would go straight to him if she thought Phoenix would say no. Phoenix found it funny at first, but it got out of hand when Miles rented some ponies for Trucy’s previous birthday, ponies that needed to be cleaned up after. “It’s a school night.”
“I dod’t thigk she’d be up too late just shari’g a couple chocolates.” Phoenix reasoned. The couch made a squeak as he turned on his side.
“Do you think you could even taste them with you being that congested?” Miles peered into the tissue box on the coffee table, finding it empty. He wasn’t pleased to hear Phoenix blowing his nose into a tissue he had definitely used before.
“Aa’SCHOOUuh! HT’TCHUUUh! Ah, dabbit.” Phoenix cursed at his effort to clear his nose being undone so quickly. “I guess I should just go to sleep.”
“That’s a good idea.” Miles kissed Phoenix’s warm cheek. “Are you coming to bed or staying on the couch for the night?”
“It’s probably a better idea to sleep here.” Phoenix blew his nose again in the crumpled tissue that left the skin it touched sore and red. “You have a trial this week, right? I don’t want you to get sick.”
“I’ve already accepted that as inevitable.” Miles picked up the living room waste basket to dispose of the tissues that had accumulated on the couch while he was out. “Though I can’t blame you for staying here if you intend on sleeping under more used tissues.”
“Oh yeah, I’ve been out since about an hour after you and Trucy left for trick-or-treating.”
Miles winced as he pictured just how many times his boyfriend had reused tissues while he was gone. No wonder his nose was so red Miles could think of a few costumes it would enhance.
“I’ll take another box from the hall closet for you. Do you want something to drink? I could heat up some apple cider so you can feel festive.”
“That would be great.”
Miles gave Phoenix another light kiss before heading to the kitchen. He took mental notes of what counters would need cleaning in the morning, particularly where it was undeniable that Phoenix tried refilling his own tea but was too out of it to keep the mug steady. As much as Miles wanted to spend the rest of the night personalizing Phoenix’s cider, it was getting late and Phoenix had no objections to just heating a mug in the microwave.
While the microwave was doing its job, Miles made a trip to the hall closet to deliver a fresh tissue box to Phoenix.
“I hope this lasts until morning.” Miles tore off the cardboard covering the opening. “Maybe you could take something so you can sleep easier and use less of these?”
“Yes, please.” Phoenix coughed with his fist pressing against his mouth.
The microwave beeped just as Miles went to retrieve the mug. On his way back, he made a stop at the bathroom to pick up a pack of NyQuil capsules. He blew lightly over the steaming mug to cool it off a little before he brought the drink and medicine to his boyfriend.
“Here you go, love. Let me know if it’s too hot or not hot enough.”
Phoenix popped out two capsules and washed them down with a large drink of cider. It burned his throat a little, making him tear up, but at least that part was done and over with. It was better than taking the medicine as a liquid, that was for sure.
“Thanks so much, hon. I can’t wait to get some sleep.”
“I’m looking forward to you getting some sleep as well.” Miles picked up the empty bowl and mug from the coffee table so there was only the mug of cider to worry about. “Goodnight, sweetheart.”
“G’night.”
Miles washed the dishes thoroughly but quickly enough for him to turn in at a reasonable time. He kept silent as he stopped to watch Phoenix finding a comfortable position to sleep in and stayed still for a while in case Phoenix needed anything.
With a quiet yawn, Miles began his trip through the hall, only to stop suddenly with a hitch of his breath.
“Hh’sshhooh!” He sniffed. “Oh, of course.”
