My friend and I visited the zoo after his shift one day and this was an exchange between us.

Reverse Stalker AU where reader is a hacker and is having fun on the dark web. Finds a link to home security cameras and it's Simon's.

First it was just curiosity. And somehow fun to 'interact' with him. Making the cameras move. Change the tv channels or even turn on the stereo.

And Simon is not amused. Not one second. As you see his frustration grow you decide it's perhaps enough. It's been a few hours now. Out of a last goodbye, you enable the mic and let out a little 'sorry'. You freeze at Simon's reaction. He doesn't move. Simply looks straight at the camera. And he sighs.

You stay there looking a bit longer. He sits down on his couch, shoulders slumping and letting his head fall back.

"stop it."

You jump, quickly shutting off the communication. And now your wallpaper stares at you. You let out a shaky breath. You ignore why you decided to keep the IP address. And erase all traces from the website. Secure the connection.

But you do.

It runs around in your mind. Again and again. That man. Wearing a balaclava even in his house. Was he a thief? A burglar? Disfigured?

You groan. Letting your head fall softly on the table.

Just a peak... Just. To see. Maybe, curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back.

You make quick work to find him again. Happy to see the security is still in place. You frown, looking at the video in front of you. It's around 3am. But here he is. Sitting on the ground, back against the couch, coffee table filled with cigarettes half smoked and ash. Cup of what seems to be bourbon but the empty bottle sitting next to it.

You bite your lip. You shouldn't be peaking. You shouldn't. So you stay there. Until you see him grab the glass and throw it angrily at the wall in front of him. You jump and gasp in shock.

"what..." You mumble to yourself.

And he doesn't stop there. Throws the coffee table, bottle shattering. The room falls in carnage. And when he goes for the tv you jump on the mouse and enable the mic.

"no!"

He stops. Chest heaving and hands clenching.

"what the fuck are you doing?" He growls.

You felt your skin crawl at the tone.

"I... Just... Wanted to check on you..."

He lets out a dry chuckle. He turns slowly walking back to the camera, looking up straight into the lens.

You feel your heart stop, through the sucky camera quality, his eyes feel like the void of a black hole themselves.

You let out a small scream when he lounged forwards grabbing the camera before the video cuts.

Leaving you trembling and trying to catch your breath.

This might be an odd thing to ask but my friend just had to do their first cull (quail) and is feeling a little freaked out by it still. Do you maybe have any advice for like, coping with that?

I guess it depends on what they are freaking out about, the physical sensation of any part of it (for instance, if they did a butcher job to use the meat, instead of a euthanasia job for burial or something) or the empathy part of it (taking a life personally).

If it's the former, rub your (general you) hands on some kind of rough surface (like a bristle brush/dish scrub brush), trim your nails short, and take a long, hot shower, and light a smelly candle. It won't particularly stop you from thinking about it, but it will make sure that the actual physical stimuli that remind you (ghost sensations on nerves, any remaining scent of blood or offal or dander, sound) get pushed back in memory behind the new sensations and/or removed.

The empathy part is harder, and there's just not a lot you (again, general you) can do about it, and I think that's okay, actually. It SHOULD freak you out the first time you take a life, and it should freak you out a little every time after that, because it gives weight to this action that this action wholly deserves. You are ending a life that you were responsible for starting, and that's heavy and deserves respect. This is the reality of breeding and raising animals for use, and at the end of the day, your friend will have to sit with that, and decide if they're okay with it if they want to keep doing it. There's no shortcut in this matter.

Some of the things I do made it easier to come to terms with for me. The first is to do my best to produce animals that WILL have a use (as opposed to producing just to produce and not having a plan for what to do with them), and the second is to use as much of what you produce as possible. For me, this means either selling the birds to others for use, or using the meat/bones myself and giving the rest back to nature (usually my crows come and eat offal the same day I do butchering). I find it easier to handle if I set the expectation from the start that a bird will be a use animal not a pet animal (ie, food or eggs or whatever that I intend to invest time and care into, compared to a companion I would emotionally invest in as well)- being able to compartmentalize this distinction is essential, and there are also going to be times when you have to make the sucky decision to end an animal you got emotionally invested in anyway (illness, injury, old age, behavioral changes, etc) because you're human and that's what we often do. I'm also more comfortable culling if I know the animal will have/has had a quality life (both because the meat will be better and because they deserve it). Lastly, it helps to remind myself that I produce some animals for a purpose and when I cull they are either fulfilling that purpose (used by me/others) or they are incapable of fulfilling that purpose (free to go to others/rest). Keeping them longer than that is, imo, a disservice to them.

I'm sorry there's not an easy fix-it. I hope that your friend is able to recover and keep raising quail, if they enjoy the rest of it.

Also for the record if any of these people are problematic I don’t know about it or what happened my entire YouTube feed for the past six years has been Reddit stories and video essays I use for background noise when I draw so if I mention someone sucky I’m sorry I haven’t consumed their content since at least middle school

For starters, I think Emma, Millard, and Horace avoid it altogether out of principle. Emma and Horace because people are stupid and they cannot believe this is what modern entertainment is and Millard because he has ruined many videos by pointing out every inaccuracy he could find and he got sick of the cesspool of misinformation that is the internet.

Jacob has been watching Minecraft videos since the beginning of the damn site. Specifically he discovered iHasCupquake and DanTDM a couple years after joining the loop and now when he’s bored and in a time with internet access he watches Minecraft Oasis and DanTDM’s Custom Mod Adventures on repeat. Noor is the exact same way, but with life hack videos very obviously aimed at middle school girls that have stuff like painting staples with nail polish and sneaking candy into class via empty glue sticks. Think Wengie and SaraBeautyCorner. They actually grew up with this so it’s more about the nostalgia than anything else

Enoch likes history videos. And videos about games like War Thunder and World of Tanks. He also likes Vine compilations, discovered when Jacob and Noor were quoting vines to each other and Enoch joined with them having absolutely zero knowledge he even knew what that was. (Horace also begrudgingly knows what Vine was, but instead of saying “yeah I sure hope it does” to Enoch’s “road work ahead???” he goes “I hate you and everything you stand for” and Enoch laughs.)

Olive, Claire, and Bronwyn watch Gacha Life/Club/whatever the fuck they’re on now I don’t know anymore music videos and Vine compilations. Bronwyn is here for quality control. (Bronwyn’s favorite YouTube series is Rosanna Pansino’s Nerdy Nummies series, even though she has no idea what any of the references are. What she does know is that she showed Jacob the Angry Birds cupcakes and he demanded they be made that exact day.)

Hugh is fascinated by all this but has little to no idea what’s going on. He did however get very invested in Sanders Sides and is very impatiently waiting with me for Orange to be revealed.

Fiona also doesn’t know what’s going on but she thinks Warrior Cats AMVs and multi-animator projects are INSANE she loves them and gets very sad when Noor is helping her look them up and they find out yet another creator is problematic
