I think a big part why there's such an issue with mischaracterization and what not in cod is because a huge part of the fandom are teenage girls who have not played the game and who got into cod through edits of ghost or könig they saw on tiktok. Kind of mean but I digress. I don't think there's anything wrong with not playing the games though, they are military propaganda and a part of the proceeds do go to the us military so if you've got a strong moral stance against that I can see why people wouldn't buy them. believe me if you think i’ve dropped a single penny on any property activision has ever handled you’d be dead wrong. i’m not sure i’d target lock on the “teenage girls” because ultimately there’s a lot of misogyny buried in that belief, but it is because people do not want to engage with the games on any level deeper than character appearances and a few voicelines. people don’t want to read ghost’s comic (which. considering the content, i cannot blame them too much but they won’t even read a synopsis), they don’t want to watch playthroughs, they don’t want to read/watch analyses. it’s a little embarassing that there’s such a clean cut between the people that have and haven’t played the games. i saw it back a few months after mw2 2022 came out and the fanbase that HAD played the game thought it fucking sucked dick and balls but the part of the fanbase that hadn’t didn’t know/didn’t care. the contrast is wild. it’s kinda funny that the people that have played the games love yuri to a frankly offputting degree but the majority of the fanbase that haven’t don’t even know who this guy is. it’s weird! but it’s not unique. i did my time in the dc fandom and when i tell you not a single person wants to pick up a comic and read it i would still be understating it. people don’t really like doing the work if the only thing that compels them is designs plus what i shall here refer to politely as “baggage”

another thing is that it’s extremely easy to write cod off as propaganda because it is, but i don’t think a lot of people realise what that actually means. i don’t think they want to actually dig in and pick apart the parts that are very clearly the writers going, “hey, you see these guys? we should hate these guys because they’re different” or “you see this shit? this is why we should have a bigger military” or “wow wasn’t that horrible. don’t google it btw since it’s not the russians that actually did that irl but the americans 🖤.” it’s almost overwhelming but people don’t want to talk about it.

and i can kinda understand why, right. because people want to “just enjoy things.” they want to be able to turn their brain off and let it all wash over them so they don’t have to think too hard. this sounds a little condescending, i realise, and i’m sorry for that because there’s nothing wrong with it. that’s why we’ve got blockbusters. but, it’s also why we’ve got marvel movies, and marvel movies have been military propaganda since the very first iron man movie.

i can’t personally ever turn off the critical lens when i engage with art. it’s a problem of mine. so, this is that haunting third component to me writing the roach fic, the component i never really bring up except in the author’s note of the first chapter: call of duty is the crowning jewel of western imperialism and if i do not talk about it somewhere at some point my head will explode

if me actually digging into it here puts anyone off of the fic now from me saying it, i’m really sorry you’ve been sold something different than what you had anticipated. think of it as a plot twist. an explicitely-stated plot twist, but one nonetheless. it’s only been implied in the fic so far, but here it is in all its ugly glory.

here are my unwanted opinions and thoughts on the manga and light novel so far. read the manga in one day (up to most recent chapter 20 i think) and read light novel volumes 1-4 in one day as well (skipped almost all of volume 1 bc it was basically the same thing until the ending)

spoilers obviously up to volume 4 part 7 ..lmao im just bored 

1. FUCK SATSUKI. ME AND MY HOMIES HATE SATSUKI!!!!!!!!!! (props to the author tho for making me hate a character who is barely seen and mostly mentioned by name so much)

2. in this house, we love and respect kozakura (funniest third wheel and the cutest tsundere ever)

3. oh my god every time sorawo and toriko hold hands i cry,,,

4. also whenever they get protective of each other... 

5. i get where sorawo is coming from in terms of not wanting to tell toriko about satsuki bc yeah she’s not a real person anymore. i kind of realized it since the beginning that satsuki wouldn’t come back either bc she was dead or turned into some monster. i’m still not completely sure satsuki was even a real person tho bc she was sketchy as hell before sorawo turned up and sorawo never met her but still

6. i constantly think about that scene of toriko showing sorawo how to use a gun. sorry im gay.

7. the descriptions sorawo gives every time she talks about toriko’s appearance is soo cute... and when sorawo said ‘the me when i was acting alone and the me when I was together with toriko were like two entirely different people’...

8. volume 4 is so far my favorite purely bc we’re getting the cutest interactions b/w sorawo and toriko, but also ninja cats bc it was just too funny

9. sorawo realizing that toriko was acting like her ‘boyfriend’ almost made me cry.. when i see the word ‘girlfriend’ in the novel,, it’ll be over for me

Danganronpa: OK IM GONNA START BY SAYING THAT THERE IS THIS CHARACTER CALLED TOGAMI IS SO HOT AND HE IS BASICALLY THE LOST TWIN OF TSUKKI EXCEPT THAT HE IS MORE SARCASTIC PLZ. Ok now on a serious note, the anime is really good and I love the characters sm omg 😭 I would recommendyou tho to kinda search up a bit of the anime to see if it's of your liking?? (tw: it contains death, murder, kinda gorish but not really, a bad principal??? Great characters?? The VA for the character togami has a great voice- Idk what else to say LMAO)

Kakegurui: One word: ✨Iconic✨. OK ACTUALLY THO, it's genuinely one of the greatest animes ever tbh. The characters are really great, and everyone is just so amazing in general (except the guys, the guys kinda suck in the 1st season) (tw: umm idk mature content kinda??? G A Y- the girls are really pretty and badass-)

2. Daily lives of Highschool boys: honestly it’s so funny and it’s that sort of fast-paced, zany comedy that makes you wheeze. as the name suggests, it’s about these 3 highschool boys just having fun but it’s also got a good plot and the ending just- so many emotions. (tw violence)

3. Haven’t you heard? I am Sakamoto: basically, sakamoto transfers to a new school and everyone is just in shock bc he is just..perfect at everything. ofc it makes him popular but some ppl don’t like him bc he is so popular and shenanigans ensue. i was cackling until the last episode which just- hit hard. (tw violence, kidnapping, fire, blood)

4. Monthly girls Nozaki-kun: all the characters are extremely likeable, chaotic bisexual disasters. it’s just this on girl trying to get her crush to fall for her but unlike many other romance anime, imo, she doesn’t come across as obnoxious, just a simp. another comedy that’ll (maybe) make you cry 🤠👍

TOP 20 SHIPS OF THE PAST DECADE

20. Spuhura - Spock x Nyota Uhura (Star Trek original and reboot): Again this was another ship that I liked, since the original series, while everyone was Spirk this and that, I was like,’’yas, yas give me the sweet, sweet Spock and Uhura interactions’ and I was happy the reboot hooked them up, even if that ended dubiously but for a glorious moment, I had it.

19. Swarkles - Barney Stinson x Robin  Scherbatsky (HIMYM): This is one of those ships I am bitter, bitter and salty about, there are more in this list in fact next spot is another one. But I loved it and I did think they complimented each other better than the wet noodle they stuck Robin with, they took the time to know the other, grown separately and then together, the episode where Barney proposed to Robin gave me all the feels and it was so sweet, and then fuck the writers deciding to do what they did. It’s no wonder the finale of this show is so hated.

18. Lotura - Lotor x Allura (Voltron Legendary Defender): When they announced a new reboot to Voltron I didn’t think much of it. I had fancied Lotor x Allura in the original series, as dubious as that was, but then I started to watch this Netflix thing and there was something between them, something more tangible and I was happy. It was this strong woman with an equally strong man encouraging her strength and not putting her in the box of the exotic pretty princess, like a certain dude, and wanted to know her mind and interests, they discovered things together and for a brief moment knew peace and I was here so happy that we were getting something good and then fuck the writers again that decided ‘Nah bro, you’re not getting it’ and you know to fuck off again. I will always have fan fiction I guess.

17. VinTi - Vincent Valentine x Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII series): This is a ship that I think started to like during my second playthrough of the game, I always figured the both could work, both having loved people that for one reason or another couldn’t fully love them back (Lucrecia due to damn guilt and Cloud because of Aerith) and both were mature enough to fit together, I just like them okay.

16. Helsa - Hans x Elsa (Frozen): Truly, I have never made it a secret that I really dislike this movie, I truly do. The only good things were Hans (which I am still huh at the ‘turns out he is evil’ I still call trolls) and Elsa (because of her damn powers) and then the next step was shipping them and honestly, he should have gone for the older sister lmao, they make more sense and there have very nice fiction out there.

15. Yuzuvier - Javier Fernandez x Yuzuru Hanyu (Figure Skating): Ahh, we have reached my dreaded and dark secret only RPF fancy. Be it broship or more, I always liked the friendship and camaraderie these two skaters had with each other, they were rink mates and rivals but above all friends. I was kokoro break when Yuzuru was telling Javi that he couldn’t do it without him and stop it you two. I just like them, they are wholesome.

14. Victuuri - Viktor Nikiforov x Yuuri Katsuki (Yuri!!! On Ice): And here we have another precious figure skating duo when I started to watch this series it was only because it was a figure skating anime and I love figure skating, I never expected to see a wholesome and wonderful healthy relationship to explode in front of me. The relationship between Viktor and Yuuri is just so lovely, so mature, they both worked through issues, grew from them and accepted them even and I can’t I love it. (Special mention here to Yurio x Mila, as is another ship I love from this series and so underrepresented).

13. Jonerys - Jon Snow x Daenerys Targaryen (ASOIAF/GoT): Regardless of the stupidity committed in the series, I have shipped them since the books, because I can read in between the lines and there are too many parallels between them and their journeys, ones that at will some point collide and bring them together in a way that will be worth it, so better make it count George. 

12. Rhaegar Targaryen x Lyanna Stark (ASOIAF/GoT): Yes, mea culpa, I love tis ship and no one can shame me for liking it and boy has people tried to do so. Were these two smart of escaping like that and not saying a thing? Nope, they were so not. Was Brandon smart going to Kings Landing, knowing there was a crazy king with a penchant of burning people and demanding his heir's head? Nope, that was probably the stupidest move of all. Do I want to believe they loved each other? Why not? Martin has a penchant for tragic love stories, I know this ship is problematical for some, but I still love it and if you see spot 10 here, well I have varied tastes.

11. Soriku - Riku x Sora (Kingdom Hearts series): Come on, this is a given. Prior to Kairi appearing, it was clear Sora was Riku’s world and Riku’s was Sora, they were attached to the hip, the rivalry for Kairi more felt like Riku being jealous of Kairi and wanting Sora’s attention back. Then we have KH2 where Sora spent the whole damn game being all ‘Riku, Riku!’ and Riku doing his damn best to help him from the shadows, ashamed to be seen. DDD was more Riku protecting him and Sora leaning on him, even KH3 had Sora wanting to find and reach Riku, and then Riku going once again to find him by the end, so I am sorry but if there was a love story written here it was between these two. 

10. Hannigram - Hannibal Lecter x Will Graham (Hannibal): Quite honestly, from all the things I ship, they are probably what one will consider the most toxic one I guess, which fair considering one part of the ship is a charismatic yet cannibalistic serial killer. But there was something in the way this relationship was developed by Fuller and brilliantly brought out by Mads and Hughs that just hooked me, their soft moments, their violent ones, it just somehow worked for me. I guess this is also one of the few canon ships that I have, funny enough.

09. Rivetra - Levi Ackerman x Petra Ral (Shingeki no Kyojin): Who will have thought that a series about human eating titans was going to give me one of my most everlasting and also shortlived OTP’s. Years can pass by and I will still love this ship, my heart will still believe there was something more between them, something that was realized or something that wasn’t, I don’t know, but I will forever love it and even though years have passed since she died, I always enjoy the hints here and there that he still remembers her or hints where we are supposed to do so.

08. Squinoa - Squall Leonhart x Rinoa Heartilly (Final Fantasy VIII): People can say whatever the fuck they want ‘the love story was rushed’ ‘we hate Rinoa’ (fuck you btw) but it doesn’t change the fact that Squall fell in love with her and that Rinoa helped him to open up, to not take things for granted and Squall taught her to be even stronger and conquer her fears, they helped each other grow and it’s what matters in the end.

07. Feanor x Nerdanel (Tolkien): This is probably, from all the romantic relationships that Tolkien has gifted us, which I have loved the most and held my attention the longest. They have the happy times, the ones that were full of joy when they met and fell in love and had their children, then we have the tumultuous times when he became too obsessed with this craft, the separation when he left with their kids leaving her behind in her pain and then their possible reencounter when he leaves the Halls of Mandos and how they might deal with it.

06. ItaHina - Itachi Uchiha x Hinata Hyuuga (Naruto): Both the heads of two of the most important clans of their villages, both with heavy expectations upon their shoulders that nearly broke them, only one was talented from the start and the other had to learn, yet they are also similar. Both love their siblings to a fault, sacrificing so much for them and their happiness, both seem to hate conflict yet know is necessary and both are devoted and loyal to a fault, they would have suited each other wonderfully, in an AU probably they would have gotten engaged, who knows, but it would have been wonderful.

05. SessKik - Sesshoumaru x Kikyou (Inuyasha): A ship that could have been but that we didn’t have. This is a ship that has been with me for years and I don’t plan to let it go, they were the best players (in a sense) in that game against Naraku, also probably the strongest, both level headed and smart, not easily intimidated and calculating, together they would have been quite a formidable force and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see that.

04. Bethyl - Daryl Dixon x Beth Greene (The Walking Dead): Another wasted potential and gone so soon, not to mention forever salty at the waste. The way they were being developed promised so much, in the few time he was with her, well, she taught him to have faith and it’s something that apparently still shows from times to times (I am not sure as I stopped with this show) and imagine how it will have gone if they had more time. Just a waste.

03. Romanogers - Steve Rogers x Natasha Romanov (Marvel/MCU): I have been shipping them for years, like honestly, and when the MCU was showing me the seeds of potentiality I was happy, not even that stupidity with Bruce killed my hope, as they still had this steady relationship, he trusted her and she trusted him, something that she couldn’t say of many, they had each others back and took care of the other...but again another wasted potential right there.

02. Huddy - Gregory House x Lisa Cuddy (House MD): I spent years, kind of, season after season watching the delicious and lovely UST between these two characters, watching them snark and then help each other, watching the ‘won’t they will they’ dance, waiting for the moment when these two will finally collide and my lord was it glorious when they finally did, and I was eager to see where it went, as they both seemed to be in relatively good places, but no once again forbid the writers to stop House from being self-destructive and another ship I had waited years was ruined.

Terrence "Terry" Graham Grandchester x  Candice "Candy" White Adley (Candy Candy): And this is still my most important ship of the decade, I was forever bitter they never ended together and that their authors decided to make them suffer so much, but then Final Story came and all clues were pointing that aha they did found the other again and ended together as they were supposed to be, and before anyone says shizz, I did manage to read the novel and I do believe all hints were there to let us all know the identity of her husband was Terry and I am so happy.

And there it is, all the ships of the decade for me lol. Next stop, I should maybe make a list of mythos ships I like lmao.

“Today is the day,” Taeyeon said, slamming her hand down on the table in front of her. Sunny jumped at the sudden sound and looked up from her book and Tiffany almost dropped her phone. The rest of the girls looked up from their food, Sooyoung with her chopsticks halfway to her mouth.

“What?”

“Today is Halloween. This is the day we get back at Seohyun for all the pranks she keeps pulling on us.” Tiffany turned off her phone and leaned forward, wary, but interested.

“What are you suggesting?” She asked. Taeyeon grinned, and Sooyoung ate the rest of her noodles, eyes wide in anticipation.

“I suggest that we do something to scare her. It’s Halloween, and its all in good fun. We’ll call it…. The Unnies Revenge.” Sunny laughed and put down her book.

“That’s such a lame name. But I’m in.”

“Me too,” said Jessica, raising her hand a bit. Hyoyeon and Yuri nodded along in agreement.

“What are we going to do, though?” Asked Yoona, leaning back in her chair. “Like, are we going to make her do a haunted house, or…?” Taeyeon put a finger to her chin, thinking.

“I didn’t actually think that far ahead. I was hoping that all of you would have some ideas.”

“Well,” Sooyoung said. “We could fill her hairdryer with shaving cream.”

“You’re just suggesting that because she did it to you,” Sunny pointed out. “Plus, that isn’t scary. The point is to scare her.”

“You’ve never had to clean shaving cream out of your hair and sheets and everything, really,” Sooyoung replied. “Does anyone have any better ideas?”

“Oh!” Hyoyeon raised her hand. “I’ve got one. Remember that old house that nobody’s living in down the road? That everyone says is haunted?” Slowly, the girls nodded their heads. “Well, that place actually belongs to the company my uncle works for. He says it’s not haunted, it’s just old, but he can get us permission to go inside. We could scare her there.” Silence. Then Taeyeon all but dove across the table to hug her. Yoona pulled her food off the table to try and save it.

“You’re a genius, Hyoyeon! That’s a great idea!”

“You almost killed my noodles!” 

Seohyun walked in, took a look at the chaos in front of her, and turned on her heel. She’d just eat later.

“Okay. So Yoona will be the one who comes in with her. We’ll say that we’re going in in pairs, and when Yoona brings Seohyun in, we’ll all run around the side and get into position.” Taeyeon pointed at Tiffany. “Tiffany, you’re in charge of the lights. Turn them off right before they get to Sooyoung. She’ll be pulling across the fake ghosts. Hyoyeon is in charge of making it sound like there’s ghosts upstairs since she knows the place the best. Jessica, you’ll grab at her legs. And Sunny, last but not least, I want you to scream once they get to the end.” Sunny nodded her head.

“And what are you going to do?” Taeyeon flipped her hair.

“I already did my part. I wrote a bunch of creepy things in fake blood and got a fake arm for her to step on at the end, when Sunny screams.”

“How does it seem like you got the good end of the deal?” Jessica asked, squinting at the other girl and leaning forward. Tiffany shushed them.

“Yoona just sent me a text. She’s on her way up with Seohyun. Look normal, guys.” Quickly, they all stood up straight and looked around. The other two girls could be seen walking up the small hill towards them. Yoona was waving, and Seohyun was looking around warily, eyeing the house.

“Is this really necessary?” Seohyun asked as they joined the group, giving the house another look-over. “Also, is this even legal?” Hyoyeon winked and gave her a thumbs up.

“My uncle got us permission to be here. I have the keys in my pocket. Totally legal!” Sooyoung leaned forward and grinned at Seohyun.

“What, are you chicken? Too scared to tour an actual haunted house?” Seohyun huffed and crossed her arms over her chest.

“I’m not scared at all. It’s just sketchy. Is it safe?”

“Yep, otherwise they wouldn’t have let us on the property,” Hyoyeon replied. Taeyeon moved them all into a circle and smiled widely, clapping her hands.

“And we got here at the perfect time. The sun is setting as we speak. Who’s ready?” Everyone cheered, prompting Seohyun to join in.

“So, who goes first?” Sunny asked, looking around at the group. Yoona quickly raised her hand.

“I’ll go first! Who wants to go with me?” Tiffany shook her head.

“I don’t want to go first, so not me.” Sooyoung quickly brought her finger up to her nose.

“Not it!” Immediately, all of the other girls put their fingers to their nose. Seohyun was just a bit to slow. “Seohyun, you’re up.” She whined a bit and let her hand fall.

“Of course I am. What are we doing?” Hyoyeon pointed at the front door.

“My uncle told me that he cleared space for us to walk from the front door out the back door. That area is completely safe and set aside for us.” The sun seemed to be setting faster than usual. Seohyun grabbed Yoona’s hand and squared her shoulders.

“Fine. Let’s go, unnie.”

As soon as the front door was closed behind them, the girls vacated the yard, dashing for the side door. Inside, Seohyun slowly closed the door and looked around.

“I can’t believe the lights in here still work,” she said, squinting at the old light bulb above them.

“They keep it workable, I think,” Yoona replied, taking a step further into the house. “It’s still super dusty though.” Seohyung followed her move, and they stepped into the living room. They had barely taken two steps when the lights flickered and died. Seohyun jumped.

“Okay, maybe not?” She could barely see in the darkness, only a bit of light spilling in from the window. “This is dumb. Did you bring a flashlight?” Yoona patted her pockets. 

“Just a tiny one. But maybe then we wont step on anything weird.” She pulled the flashlight from her pocket and smiled a bit. She knew exactly when and where to shine it, and she swung it around the small living room before letting it fall on the space on the wall where the wallpaper had peeled away. Written on the wall in what seemed like blood with someone’s finger were the words “Get Out”. Seohyun stopped her her tracks.

“I thought her uncle said this place was safe,” she whispered. Yoona shrugged her shoulders.

“Safe enough not to fall down, I guess. She told me that her uncle is even afraid of this place.” Just as she finished speaking, the sounds of footsteps rang on the floor above them. Slow, steady footsteps. Pacing.

“Is…. Is there anyone else in here with us?” Yoona looked up and shook her head, not bothering to shine the flashlight at the ceiling.

“There shouldn’t be. Her uncle said that the place is empty.” Seohyun’s hand tightened on Yoona’s and she tugged her forward.

“Let’s just get out of here, this place is creepy.” She stepped forward, further into the room, and Yoona’s flashlight flickered. She stopped again. “What’s that? Don’t tell me that your flashlight is dying.” Yoona frowned and shook the flashlight.

“That’s weird. I just put batteries in it too.” That was the cue. From somewhere down the hall to their left, Sooyoung pulled on a fake ghosts, letting it move past the two girls. In the complete darkness, the cloth brushed against Seohyun’s face, making her let out a squeal and jump back, squinting into the dark to try and see what had just touched her. Yoona looked up, shocked by her sudden movement. “What happened?”

“Did you not just feel that? Something definitely just moved past me. I felt it touch me.” She attached herself to Yoona’s arm. “Okay, haha, this prank is funny, let’s go.” Yoona looked down at her, putting on her best scared face.

“Seohyun, this isn’t a prank. I can’t get my flashlight to turn back on.” The youngest whimpered and tugged Yoona forward.

“Let’s just go. Come on.” As they passed into the kitchen, Jessica, who had hidden behind one of the old couches, reached out and touched Seohyun’s leg. She screamed and shoved Yoona further into the kitchen. “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go.” Upstairs, Hyoyeon was following them, slowly. Pacing. Yoona’s flashlight flickered back to light and landed on a puddle of blood on the floor, and bloody footprints leading to the fridge, and then back out, the way they were coming into the room. Jessica, suddenly getting an idea, moved behind them, out of the reach of any light, and began dragging her feet to sound like she was walking towards them. Seohyun spun around, but she could see nothing.

She stepped backwards once, twice, trying to see what was behind them. Then, on her third step, her foot hit something. Something human.

A blood-curdling scream shook the building, and Seohyun looked down to see an arm sticking out from behind the fridge. An arm she’d just stepped on. The back door was right there, and it seemed like whoever was behind them was getting closer. Desperately, she grabbed for the door and swung it open, tumbling out into the night and dragging Yoona behind her.

“Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, are you guys crazy someone was murdered in there we need to call the police we need to do something. Oh my god, we could have died. What if the murderer is still in there, he knows we saw, he might follow us.” Seohyun turned around to look at Yoona, taking in a deep, terrified breath. And saw that she was trying not to laugh. Her blood turned cold in her heart stopped. “Wait….” 

Out from the house came the rest of the girls, laughing loudly and giving each other high fives. Finally, Yoona let herself laugh, covering her mouth with her hand.

“Sorry Seohyun. I lied. We were trying to scare you.” She let out the breath she’d been holding.

“You mean. All that blood and everything. Was fake?” The girls nodded, and Taeyeon grinned.

“That was my handiwork. Didn’t I do a good job? We really had you fooled, Seohyun.” Seohyun let her arm fall away away from Yoona’s and let out a whine.

“I was really scared, you guys!” Tiffany came forward and grabbed her hands.

“Sorry, but you prank us so much, we just had to get you back a bit.” As the girls laughed, a thump came from the house. They all froze.

“Uh, everyone is here, right?” Sunny asked. They slowly turned to look at the house. Another thump sounded inside, and at that, they all went racing down the hill towards their cars, screaming.

A moment later, a man stepped out. As he watched the girls take off down the hill, one turned back and winked at him, throwing him a thumbs up. He chuckled.

“Hyoyeon wins this one.”

So after the long wait, Yu-Gi-Oh Vrains is finally here and with that, the return of my...whatever the heck I do with this blog. Impressions? I guess that’s the best word I can use for this.

So with the start of Vrains, I wanted to make this seem more professional in a way. When a new episode comes out, I’m going to give my overall thoughts in a single post, kinda like a review, and then I’m going to make fun of it/rant if I have to (hopefully not as much as ARC-V or anytime soon for that matter) in other ones if I find something to add. So to put it in a nutshell, this post is going to be the review post/my thoughts and the others that follow after it are going to be other things related to the episode. Since we also got the Opening/Ending, I’m going to give my thoughts on them too but that’s going to be in its own post as well. 

So with that all out of the way, let’s drive into the Vrains!

Episode 1: My Name is Playmaker!

So we start off the episode with Revolver in what we can assume from what he says to be the world within Link Vrains, Cyverse, which he is outright about to destroy (well that was fast). He has seemed to have sealed away the lifeforms, similar to the one we know about already but in different color, that live/protect this world. There are five of them in total, six if you want to count the AI. Speaking of the AI, he was the only one to not be captured since he seemed to not be in area at the time of the attack because he’s hated by the other ones (looking forward to know more about that). Our little AI ends up sealing the access code for Cyverse into him, affectedly kicking out Revolver, along with himself, before he could destroy the world but in the process, Revolver ends up destroying the AI’s body (does that count as a death?) and turns him into what Revolver calls a “Ignis” which btw is what this AI program is called apparently. So yay, we finally have a name for him!

So after that whole ordeal, we have a time skip to five years into the future (geez, how old is Revolver then if he looks the exact same or does he just not age because he never leaves the VR world? Also, Yusaku would have been 11 when this first happened (and what is the deal with protagonists being 11 when everything goes to hell with them?) After getting a short tour of Den City, we cut to a shot of Yusaku as Playmaker dueling against a Knight of Haoni (and kicking his ass) with the Knight questioning who Yusaku is and why he would get in their way with Ignis watching from an gargoyle statue’s eye. Yusaku (who btw I didn’t expect to have such a deep voice after being used to Yuya’s for so long 0-0) calmly answers that he’s basically a superhero that will stop the Knights whenever they should appear and that his name was Playmaker.

So after the opening, we cut to a 11-year-old (I think he’s 11 because of the timeskip) Yusaku in a field of grass. A voice of a character I think we have yet to meet yet tells him to wake up and he does so to find himself in his classroom (wow, even Yusaku falls asleep in class XD)

So to summarizes this in a nutshell, Naoki explains to Yusaku about Link Vrains and calls him out about not having any friends (you’re nice) but Yusaku just doesn’t give a crap and it is hilarious to watch how many f*cks he gives about Naoki and whatever the heck he is saying (I love this guy already). Oh and Naoki starts fanboying over Playmaker as well in front of Yusaku (cross that one off for the Vrains bingo already). But the best part would have to be when Yusaku is leaving and Naoki offers to teach him how to duel, Yusaku gives him three reasons for why he would say no to this like such a smartass and Naoki’s reaction to this is golden LMAO. However, he also gives him three goods reasons to why he could say yes as well which I really like about Yusaku’s character right away. He’s rude but he’s not doing it to be mean. He’s just thinks from a statistical point of view which I can see character development for that right away (and I’m sticking to the fact that he could be a computer program even more from this because he really doesn’t show much human emotions).

So after cutting to a scene of Ignis being chased, we now go over to the SOL technology with Akira talking to...a chess piece. I’m not even kidding, he’s talking to a chess piece which apparently is Bishop...an actual chess piece bishop (well I honestly wasn’t expecting that of all things). We also see five other pieces before they disappear so I wonder if we are going to meet the “Pawn” or the “King” piece in the future? Are they a royal family that run SOL? It has got me thinking.

Anyway, the Bishop and Akira are talking about capturing Ignis as well, their reason being that they need him to reopen Cyverse since Link Vrains was only created because of the data gathered from there and with it closed off now, their company is slowly dying because of Link Vrains slowly dying (foreshadowing to a major crash maybe?) 

We now go back to the Knight’s hideout with Revolver and his right-hand man, Specter who is telling his boss man that they found Ignis and want to keep him away from SOL so they can’t bring back Cyverse. Specter also informs Revolver about Playmaker and he doesn’t appear to know the name (I’m still hoping that he does know Yusaku though). He tells him to just ignore Playmaker for now and focus on capturing Ignis. 

Now that we know why our two other groups want Ignis, we go back to Yusaku who is just hanging out now at his partner in crime, Shoichi, work place. Yusaku is asking who those people on the billboards are and Shoichi tells him about Blue Angel and Go along with telling Yusaku about the Data Storm along with Speed Duels. It is interesting to note that when Shoichi said Speed Duel, Yusaku almost looked to be getting a flashback to that grassy land (I’m REALLY starting to think he came from Cyverse and that would explain his deck choice).

So after apologizing and Yusaku telling Shoichi he’s doing this on his own free will, he asks him if he has found out any new leads which he has being Ignis and I just find it funny how Yusaku, after hearing this, just casually outright closes up the food truck for the night XD I would have died of laughter if someone just went up to the truck at that moment, about to ask for a hot dog, and Yusaku just says “sorry, we are closed” and just slams the door on them.

So after figuring out that SOl and Hanoi want Ignis, Yusaku plans to capture the AI to use as his “trump card” (I still love the OP FYI) against them. And like freaking bosses, they are able to do this in a matter of seconds (geez, Yusaku is a freaking genius 0-0) It is also interesting to note that Yusaku seems to be able to sense it...(the foreshadowing to him being an AI as well is so easy to notice now after all the ARC-V foreshadowing). 

But before that actually happens, Akira and Bishop talk about lowing the security to be able to find Ignis which Akira refuses to do because he’s afraid of the Knights attacking while their defenses are down while at the same time, Go and Blue Angel are about to have duels for the public. Naoki is watching from the crowd with fans for Blue Angel and Go and fanboying some more. 

So regardless, SOL does a massive city wide scan for Ignis and knowing that Vrains’ defenses will be down now, Revolver, being the smug bastard that he is (I’m loving this guy already too) goes to unleash an attack with one of his knights and to find Ignis. 

But seriously, I love how smug he looks when he finds this out. I really hope he will be my new Yuri to Yusaku’s Yuya (and yes, I do still hope they are brothers but I can’t help but ship it almost...don’t judge me...)

So yeah, in a matter of seconds, the Knight and his Cracking Dragon broke through the firewall and out right just starts murdering everyone it comes across. I mean, after the whole Zarc thing and with me currently watching season 2 of Attack on Titan, I seen worse but damn, the first episode and we already have a death count? Nice Vrains. I’ll give you that.

Okay, I’ll admit, this part annoyed the hell out of me but knowing who the writer is, I’m not even surprised. So to put this into another nutshell, Blue Angel is in trouble and Yusaku goes into Vrains and saves her as Playmaker (I really hope to god this is only a one time thing for Aoi’s character -_- (same with the rest of the females but I know for a fact it isn’t and I expect Aoi to gain a crush on Playmaker from this while Aoi might hate Yusaku in the real world knowing this troupe).

So after that annoying ass save, Yusaku threatens to delete Ignis if the Knight doesn’t stop his attack (damn, that is dark for a Yu-Gi-Oh  protagonist (told you guys he was going to be an anti-hero and a major one at that from the looks of things). He also tells the Knight that Ignis is now a dueling program (Decode Talker theory is coming closer to being real) and that he will only give the Knight Ignis if he beats him in a duel. 

So they are about to start a duel and Ignis out right tells Yusaku he can’t beat the Cracking Dragon so he uses his powers to unlock the Data Storm and gives Yusaku his hoverboard and the episode ends with Ignis declaring this as a Speed Duel. 

So yeah, that was episode one of Vrains. No actual duels, unless you want to count that one at the beginning, but a lot of set up in terms of story. I honestly love what they have done this time around with their protagonist. After the whole Egao mess, it is nice to see this show become dark, super dark from the looks of things, and to have someone like Yusaku as our new lead. I also love the foreshadowing we have got right off the bat in terms of Yusaku and I can’t wait to see what actually he is in the late future. However, I admit I stopped enjoying the episode a lot when the whole “Playmaker saying Blue Angel” bit happened. Again, I shouldn’t be surprised but god, it is still annoying regardless. I’m really scared for Aoi now honestly.

So, on a scale of 1-10, how do I score this episode (in my opinion):

Episode 1: My Name is Playmaker! : 6/10

I wish I could give this episode a higher score for being the first episode but with this episode being pure plot, it was hard to understand what was going on when I first watched it raw and the first viewing is always what makes me enjoy the episode more or not in the long run and I enjoy episodes more if I have an idea of what is going on. There was also the fact that there was no dueling in this episode which took out some of the main action for the series (and I’m just honestly surprised that they let this happen since they are trying to sell cards after all). Also, like I’ve stated, the Blue Angel part REALLY left a bad taste in my mouth. However, I did enjoy the first half a lot. I love Yusaku not giving a sh*t throughout the beginning XD

Now onto the courts:

Death Count: 0 - 5.5 (I saw at least five people getting blasted by Cracking Dragon and Ignis’s body was destroyed but he wasn’t killed so I’m counting that as a half death I suppose).

Damsel in Distress Court: 0 - 1 (Yes this is going to be a thing and Aoi might be on here a lot). 

So yeah, that about does it. After resting my eyes for a bit, since this took a while to write, I’m going to be doing my thoughts on the opening and ending and then I’m going to do what I like to do the most, making fun of the episode. I hope you guys like this new system I guess you can call it that I’m trying out for Vrains and yeah.

I’m a JERK who can’t help but rank my favorite characters,

Favorite male characters:

1. Jacob Frye Jacob had an absolutely unprecedented climb up my favorite characters list. He went from being this butch asshole in the trailers for AC:S to...I LOVE MY BI SON??? I don’t think I’ve purely identified with a character so much since Marian Hawke in DAII when I was a closeted 18 year old who didn’t think I’d ever come out. Like, I’m ultimately not too protective of my favorite dudes--I look at my list and I’m like, yeah, this is mostly garbage. Jacob is the one dude character who I have actually cried over people saying shit about him (I casually call Jacob garbage a lot, but not too long ago a good friend said “yeah, he fucks up everything. really everyone would be better off without him” and I cried harder than I thought I would).

I identify with Jacob because he’s a giant ADHD bisexual who messes up literally everything he does but still tries the best he can to be a good person and he’s someone who still legitimately cares about people who have hurt him deeply. At the same time, he’s not a queer character that wants to fully integrate with society either. He’s funny and loves his sister and she’s a better Assassin than he is. He’s a good person but his queerness isn’t clean--it’s rough and it hurts and it damages his relationships and it’s so real to me.

I’ve never felt happier about being bi and not totally good at things than the months after AC:S came out and Jacob was announced as canonically bisexual. Before that I’d been struggling a lot with the lesbians v. bi women thing, and Jacob just made me feel so good about myself and so hopeful. I love Jacob Frye.

2. Johannes Cabal I have never been more right about a character’s ultimate arc than I was with Cabal. He’s been on my list of faves for years, but the fifth book jettisoned him into second place among the guys. If he were canonically queer he and Jacob would probably be tied tbqh. I love this horrible man. I love his arc. Anyone who wants to write villains with a redemption should read these books. SPOILERS but I love how his arc isn’t about accepting things the way they are re: death. He never accepts the Bible, never goes to confession and gets his sins forgiven. He never gives up his desire for things to be changed and for the unfairness/injustice of death to be righted and his disbelief in religion as a savior. He never gives up his arrogance. He’s still really smart.

But by the end, he becomes a human who is worthy of having friends and is capable of doing the right thing and that means so much to me. I expected a giant Thing at the end where he did something truly villainous to show that he was Always That Way and Always Would Be, but it never happened. He slowly defeated evil within himself without even knowing it, and that matters to me.

3. Loki (MCU). Oh, Loki. My queer rage analogue.

Some context: I saw Thor (2011) when my family was falling apart. I was mad, so mad. That scene when Loki confronts Odin was so profound to me--I read it as a coming out scene, and I know a lot of other queer folks did, too.

I’ve known I was bi since Dragon Age II, as dumb as that sounds. When I wanted nothing more than to romance both a dude and a lady. BUT I had planned to bury it. It was easier to just date men, so why not? When Loki was revealed as Canonically Bisexual, that was really when the word clicked for me. That was the moment I think I knew that word was truly inescapable for me.

Whoo boy. That scene in the Avengers when he shows up after creating a portal with the Tesseract and intends to tear the world apart...that’s the moment I realized how queer and angry I was. I was closeted and wanted to burn it ALL down. He would either win or be destroyed, and the fantasy of burning as I was was so satisfying to me--either way he was going to die as himself. I was sitting in the theatre and that was when I knew I had no choice but to come out. I was afraid. Anger was an easier feeling to have.

Loki. My reminder that I’ll take a queer villain over a Perfect Queer (TM) every day of the week and also for the rest of my life--I will never, ever care about a Perfect Queer, because that’s not what I am, that’s not the family I come from, that’s not the reality of my health or what I aspire to be. That rage gave me the courage to come out, and tbqh it gives me strength now.

4. Harry Dresden Harry is Trash Wizard Prime. I discovered him during a time when men were an absolute mystery to me--I didn’t grow up with many (any) good male role models. As a bi teenager, I started to notice men because that’s the thing girls attracted to men were socially supposed to do, and I realized I didn’t understand them.

I saw the cover for Dead Beat in a Barnes & Noble and I picked it up. He looked so dashing, so rogueish. And this chaotic good motherfucker is that. He cares about people and wants to do the best he can with his gift, even if he is imperfect, and that spoke to me as a teenager so much.

He was a male character who I felt safe with. Society hated him for his gift, and sometimes did its best to destroy him even while he was trying to be good (which, in retrospect, is one reason why I associate mages/wizards/witches with queerness). I felt like he was a man who would protect me as a girl who, at that time, thought of myself as het but who was very afraid of men (L O L. LOL. L      O       L. Biggest joke ever) and who had experienced trauma at male hands.

I felt deeply betrayed when, after Changes, he had intrusive thoughts about raping the women around him.

I don’t quite have words for how much that hurt. Cabal was never misogynist in quite that way, and Loki is a virulent misogynist, but in a way that strikes me as very real for some queer men (not okay, but A Thing That Actually Happens). And as someone with OCD who experiences damaging intrusive thoughts myself, I feel like should have understood.

I felt really betrayed when Harry’s character took that direction. It caught me by surprise. It was actually triggering for me--the message I got was “every man will hurt you” and I’ve spent years trying to unlearn that. I remember shaking after a certain chapter of the book after Changes. I remember thinking that Men Will Always Hurt Me if Harry would.

Recent books revealed it was the result of a demon in his head...but it still hurt a lot. I discovered those books when I needed a man to look up to, and I still feel like that trust was betrayed.

I wouldn’t really recommend The Dresden Files to any of my friends now--I still want them to read them to understand a very formative text for me. I love Harry Dresden. He is part of what made me, of what defined my morality. I love him. I want him to be part of a better story.

Also I will be 100% honest and say that his super cis straight dude descriptions of wanting to sleep with women really spoke to me as a young queer chick. I was really into “vagazzled” btw.

5. Cullen Rutherford WE HAVE ARRIVED AT THE OUTLIER.

Cullen has that Captain America vibe I usually can’t stand. He’s super lawful good and even upholds laws that he shouldn’t.

He’s also a drug addict who was deeply traumatized and needs his girlfriend to function (an ongoing theme with me). Even his very oppressive anger makes sense to me. It sucks, but I get it. That’s valid.

Also, I really hate it when people say his character arc made no sense. I’m sorry, those people flat out don’t understand narrative or think characters can escape their original packaging. Spoiler; that’s not an ‘arc’. Characters change, deal with it.

I think one thing I love about Cullen is that he was really, really tailored for women who are interested in men (note: not just Straight Women).

I think one of the biggest things for me is that he’ll do anything for the Inquisitor (his girlfriend). He was SUPPOSED to be bi via leaks from the company that made the game (if that was canon he’d be much higher on this list). But it does ultimately matter a lot to me that he was so specifically tailored to be a fantasy for women who are interested in men. He loves her. He will do almost anything for her. She helps him get over a serious addiction. Cullen taught (my bi/poly ass) about m/f narratives that I needed.

I guess I have a Thing for men who really need the women in their lives. Cullen gets the girlfriend role, and all the trauma that only men are usually allowed to have.

Honorable mentions:

Victor and Yuuri from Yuri on Ice. (If they had more canonical trauma, they would have lettered, and they may in the future. I love that Literally Wearing a Bi Flag Victor is a garbage human being who doesn’t understand feelings but still loves is boyfriend and doesn’t want that relationship to end. I love how Yuuri is an anxious gay baby.) Albert Wesker, a truly fine villain who was not done justice by those movies. Ned Wynert, who taught me a lot about writing characters from marginalized groups I am not a part of.

Favorite lady characters: 1. Marian Hawke. I almost don’t have words for how deeply formative Hawke is to me. She changed my life. I know she can be a different person no matter who plays her, but I think the things I fundamentally love about her are somehow universal.

For context on Marian Hawke--I was 18 and deeply closeted when I played DAII for the first time. I had committed to “never coming out” because I thought it would make my mom sad. I remember sitting in the uni library and thinking about Hawke and how bi aka queer (ADDITIONALLY poly) I was and I regret how that was the moment I decided I would only date men because it would be easier. That didn’t last. I didn’t know how much that would tear me up inside.

Hawke was the first gateway to my sexuality, but I thought I could avoid her message.  I knew I wanted to date both men and women.

Hawke herself is...me. Granted, you can control some of her actions as the player, but she still fucks up in a lot of the same ways no matter which version of her you play. She still tries to do the best she can (sometimes that’s a lot, sometimes not a lot, sometimes it’s oppressive). She cares. I can’t remember if she or Cabal came into the Trash Wizard (or trash mage) #2 slot, but she’s right up there on my fave trash magician list.

Because she’s so deeply formative, she’s another character I can’t be rational about. I HATE with every fiber of my being that she’s not static/unchangeable. I partly hate dude!Hawke so much because there are no female characters like my take on Marian that even EXIST. Soft butch, bi, diplomatic, kinda funny, kinda mad.

She tries her best, just like I think I do. She fails a lot, even when she means well. My Marian is bi as fuck. She changed my life. I don’t know who I would be without her (I mean, probably still bi as fuck, but still). I love Marian Hawke.

2. Evie Frye. I’ll just say it: Evie Frye fixed my ability to write female characters.

I was feeling a lot of pressure from other female writers (sadly, even particularly other queer women) to write WOMEN’S NARRATIVES. I felt like those had to be about rape and weakness and strength in spite of that. THAT IS A NARRATIVE THAT MATTERS, however I either struggle to identify with it, or I over-identify with it and I’m afraid to walk to my car.

Evie isn’t that.

She’s perhaps the greatest Assassin in history, short of Altair or Ezio, who made the brotherhood what it is. She lives and breathes that tradition. She’s most powerful when she is unseen, and in that way, I always feel safe with her. She’s the rightful heir to the entire series, so I feel like she will always be safe.

I learned so much about how to write myself and what I wanted and what I think a lot of other women want even if it’s not part of The Discourse, through Evie Frye. She defies stereotypes about what it means to be “woman”. She’s treated no worse than Jacob by the narrative, and she’s arguably treated as the inheritor of the Assassin tradition and like her skills matter just a bit more. The narrative could do without Jacob (as much as I love him) but it couldn’t do without Evie. She’s just as powerful as he is.

That we get to see her as both a new adult and a middle aged women is extra important. The fact that she spends her later narrative hunting one of the most virulent men in history (Jack the Ripper) means a lot to me. She is most powerful in her prime, while Jacob burns out later on, and that ALSO matters a lot to me. Shitty men are afraid of her, not the other way around. There’s no narrative where she lets the think they could rape her to win; she just wins. (Again, nothing wrong with female characters who use their femininity that way, but Evie just kills those fuckers, and that’s what I need in my life of believing in self defense).

I love her. She loves her husband, she loves her brother. She’s prim and proper and perfectly tailors her outfits and knows how to strike a killing blow. Evie is about a different kind of resistance than Jacob, but she’s still about resistance. She’s the first female character I’ve seen, in literal years, who is allowed to exist beyond her own femininity. She’s just allowed to exist and be really cool. Evie also means a lot to me.

3. Leonie Barrow This song really sums up Leonie Barrow for me. /They see you as small and helpless, they see you as just a child/ Surprise when they find out that a warrior will soon run wild/. She starts out as so?? Small?? compared to the overall narrative of the Cabal books, which are steeped in angels and gods and Lovecraftian abominations from whom the very foundations of the universe were forged. She’s the Innocent Girl at first. Her femininity, her innocence, does matter, but it’s not what I thought it would be. And by the end, she’s a shotgun wielding master detective, who Cabal CANONICALLY trusts to make the same logical decisions he would.

She is willing to kill to defend her friends even if she doesn’t like it. She will stand against the darkness and be afraid but she will smile.

She’s also almost /definitely/ canonically bi at the end of the fifth book, short of the actual word being used. It’s not a plot spoiler, but it gives me life either way. She’s not the girlfriend, she’s not the Woman, she’s something else and she matters in her own way. Her potential is limitless, and I’m inspired by her every single day. People talk about Stever Rogers as their human ideal, but I guess Leonie Barrow is my comfortable alternative.

Leonie Barrow saves people by her empathy--and she’s also willing to wield a shotgun. Outside of a magical girl narrative, she and Elizabeth DeWitt are the purest versions of the ‘weaponized femininity’ narrative I can think of.

4. Elizabeth DeWitt Oh, Elizabeth. I love her. I love her fucked up history. I love her fucked up present and her implied fucked up future. I wish she had a better ending. If I ever write fic, it will be to correct what has been done to her by canon.

Elizabeth is trying to escape her fate. Her ultimate arc may be about accepting a shitty end, but I don’t think that has to be the case, since I think so much of her story is about denying her future. Like her, I will always hope and strive for something better. She’s femme and hard and powerful and will break the world and make it whole again all with one wishing <3 .

She has the power of a god and the writers/developers/designers didn’t know how to handle that in an interesting way. I love her.

5. Talia (from Arrows of the Queen) SO

When you are reading about a clinically depressed character and you think, “I IDENTIFY WITH HER SO MUCH” that’s probably a sign. So many times, Talia tried to tell me how I was feeling, and it took me a very long time to listen.

I was easily clinically depressed when I read the Arrows of the Queen books. My uncle had just died without me coming out to him. I felt like a disappointment to my mom. My bachelors degree was on fire and it wasn’t totally my fault. There was nothing about myself that I didn’t deeply despise when I read these books, nothing that I didn’t feel the world would be better without. I didn’t want to die, since I have a very particular attachment to my mortality and no matter what, I’m attached to my life for my mom, but I felt so fundamentally worthless that it still hurts to think about. I haven’t been that low since then, and I hope to never be that low again.

I was depressed and I didn’t know it. I don’t think I was truly suicidal even then, even if I was experiencing almost daily suicidal ideation. I don’t think I would have died, but I still think Talia saved my life a little bit--she at least taught me that it’s okay to acknowledge my illness and seek treatment and that it’s okay to want to be happy. I’m so deeply grateful for that I don’t even have words for it, partly because, while I think I would have survived, I wouldn’t be happy.

Talia also got to fuck the most desirable male characters in the Arrows of the Queen trilogy. Even though she was quiet and was shy and was depressed. The message was this: I could have love even if I was mentally ill. I specify ‘male’ characters because Talia was straight, and also because a part of me feels less desirable to men than women, so that fantasy means a lot to me.

Talia is me at my most vulnerable. Talia is me when I want to reach into my own chest and tear myself apart. I love her. She matters. <3

Honorable mentions:

Pearl from Steven Universe (my favorite anxious lesbian, who got a great character arc that I never expected to be validating to both the lesbian-bi women dilemma and to her mental illness. I <3 Pearl). All the women in Overwatch. Sailor Moon and her soldiers. Tamora Pierce’s heroines. Lara Croft.
