I just want you to know that I'm really sorry that you experienced all that. I've been very picky about the blogs I follow and avoided Twitter entirely, so I suppose I never saw the full extent of how bad parts the fandom have become. You absolutely deserve to explore your creative works without worrying about how someone else might react.
I first discovered your blog through your welcome home art. I adore your writing. The time you take to develop your world building and characters is top-notch. And that's not even touching on your art! Seriously, it's amazing to see how you examined and explored the skeletal and muscular structure for someone with 8 limbs.
If you ever the WH fandom, and definitely gonna stick around for your future creations.
Thank you so much for the kind words, I know I'm answering asks late, but better now than never right? I'm so glad that you do enjoy my writings and of course I do plan on continuing to write for Welcome Home, I will, however, also work on the other fandom writes I have been neglecting (Welcome Home will have tags for it so it should be easy to find compared to the other writes). I feel really bad for leaving people hanging but I am also glad you guys stuck around until I came back.
Another thing, thank you everyone so much for understanding my standing on the Welcome Home fandom. The fandom has definitely opened my eyes on a lot of issues within the fandom and others. The most reoccurring and biggest issue being that so many people tend to s3xualize things that in my opinion, shouldn't be. I used to like smut fics in different fandoms but recently no matter the fandom, I find some very disturbing works usually on AO3. Usually I'm just very uncomfortable with smut or NSFW art now, especially with Welcome Home when I wasn't before. It's why I decided to just not write for smut now or anything overly s3xual. Suggestive is fine, just not full on smut. It could be because of the reasons listed above or maybe I've just matured more than I was before (Idk if that's even possible for my age).
Also tysm for people letting me know about what my artwork looks like, I SWEAR I did not mean for most of it to be that suggestive, I just thought it would look aesthetic. Usually I just like making everything look so soft and smooth and I guess some people saw the water in this ( https://aerkame.tumblr.com/post/716241325120438272/spring-showers ) as not aesthetic water- I just tried to make it look like Wally was flirting in pretty rain. 😭

Rules!
1. Themes will vary with this blog. Mystery Incorporated is PRETTY dark at times, so it’ll be what you expect there. To that end, dark themes, violence and maybe swearing.
I will try my best to tag everything. These will be under the format of swearing tw. If you’d like me to tag anything specific, don’t hesitate to ask through anon / inbox / im!
I don’t have any triggers but I do ask you tag all of your NSFW (sexual) content.
Mun is of age, and as such I won’t be writing anything of the sexual nature with minors.
2. I’m private, which means I only write with mutuals (this is for my own sanity / comfort; everyone’s cool!). I’ll write with canon, oc, and crossover characters.
Although I’m private, when it comes to following people, I’m selective. We don’t have to have known each other prior to write!
As for following back, I usually take a week tops to do so - but if you’ve hit up my promo, I go through that eventually.
If it’s a crossover, I have to know the fandom and be at least a little bit confident with it. This is so I’m able to work with you, our thread and have muse for it.
I follow the tag #trappingguy. If there’s anything you want me to see, like dash commentary, just tag that and x-kit will alert me of your post! I may respond to ic stuff ic stuff if I’m feeling it.
In that sense, I’m chill with dash shenanigans with most folk, not just mutuals!
Absolutely no godmodding. It ain’t fun, fam. If you’re not sure what this term means, do look it up. This includes powerplaying, metagaming, and other things of that nature. This applies especially in fights if they happen (I’m chance-based and hope that you are too).
I can be picky with OCs. But rest assured, if you’ve followed me/interacted with my promo, I’ll always give your pages a read.
Please don’t be offended if I don’t want to interact with you (and please don’t try to guilt me into doing so!).
I DON’T CARE ABOUT AESTHETICS. I just think they’re pretty. If you don’t use formatting or anything like that, or heck - even wanna’ just do iconless rp - I have no problem with it whatsoever! It’s you, your writing and your muse I care about!
3. Please don’t rush me for starters or responses.
PLEASE understand that I have blogs galore and my muse tends to fluctuate; this can mean I’m everywhere at once and can end up neglecting a blog or two. It’s nothing personal; you know how muses are!
I have a full-time job (and I’m trying to get into screenwriting in my off-time) so sometimes I’m scrapped for time or exhausted. I’m also an introvert who deals with anxiety and depression, thus that may affect how much / how often I roleplay. If I don’t get chance to respond to anything ic or ooc, it’s nothing personal! Promise!
Chances are, I’ve probably has seen that bit of interactivity and just haven’t gotten around to responding yet.
My roleplaying style being para/multi-para, I may take a while to respond. I hoard drafts like a dragon - it’s really just the motivation to write and ship those out.
I hoard asks, but sometimes can’t find muse or interest for all of them. If it’s been a month or two, generally assume I’m not interested / can’t find muse for it. You’re free to send another though!
I answer asks from anyone - personals, rp blogs and anons. I’ll answer non-mutual asks occaisonally but I won’t be making threads out of them
4. Shippings? If they’re of similar age, sure!
If I don’t happen to be interested, don’t force anything on my character.
I do not ship incestuous ships. Do NOT follow/interact if you do.
The ship has to have chemistry; I’m generally shipping trash, but if they don’t click, they don’t click, sorry.
This is a multi-ship blog, meaning there will be more than one ship without them conflicting with eachother.
If you want to ship and I already have a ship of your choosing going with a duplicate, please don’t hesitate to hmu! My ships aren’t exclusive and each character/relationship portrayal is unique to me!
Relationships are eternal until you deem otherwise. If you’re not interested in a ship anymore, just let me know!
5. Whilst I am of age, I’m not aiming for sexual content on this blog (and will not be dealing with fetishes). The occasional joke is fine, but anything beyond that makes me uncomfortable, and I typically don’t recommend pulling it with my character if you’re interacting with me.
6. About reblogs…
I am not a meme source, and reblogs clog up my activity. Please reblog any memes you find on this blog from their SOURCE. The exception to this rule is if there is no source; go ahead.
I don’t feel comfortable with Personals reblogging my IC or OOC posts, so please don’t do that. If I put something in the fandom tags for whatever reason (bar promos), you’re free to, though.
This goes for my art too unless it has the tag ok to rb, but otherwise only the person I drew it for can reblog it. If you wanna’ reblog something, I DO put it on my art blog eventually!
A few times is fine, as it happens, but repeatedly breaking these rules will result in me soft blocking you.
I try to participate in reblog karma as much as I can, but always reblog from the source/a meme source.
If a post or ask is for you, you’re free to reblog it to save it though - but only if you’re an rp blog!
7. I’m a para / multi-para blog, novella if I’m adventurous and have time. Whilst I may roleplay crack threads with shorter responses, this does not apply to all threads I write. This means:
I write my replies as detailed as I can muster, and length can range from 1 paragraph to 6.
Short responses (such as one-liners) in more serious threads where I’ve written a decent deal can instantly kill my muse for that thread.
Whilst I’d prefer for partners to at least somewhat match my length, it’s entirely up to you - just try your best and make sure you give me enough to work with. ♡
If my muse happen to go nuts out of nowhere - like, overboard - don’t stress too much about matching him.
8. Threads! You can yeet asks, memes, and even starters at me if I’ve liked a call! I’ll obviously have my own you can like.
You’re free to like starter calls even if we’re not mutuals; I can check out your blog that way. I still only write starters for mutuals though.
Starter memes are the BEST way to interact me because they just yeet a prompt at my face and really help me write starters. If you see me reblog one, send one!
If you want a certain verse, lemme’ know! Otherwise, I’ll probably default to a post-canon verse.
If you want to turn an ask into a thread, go ahead!
I don’t recommend writing starters for me unless we’ve discussed something. I don’t like to leave anyone hanging.
Please don’t assume things about my muse. If you’re uncertain about things, ASK.
IMs are open to mutuals, if you want to do any in-depth plotting. I also have Discord if that’s more convenient for you!
For the moment, I’m sticking PRIMARILY to Mystery Incorporated canon with some other media sprinkled in. It’s just because Fred has a lot of media to cover and I haven’t binged his stuff yet.
9. Guidelines on mains and relationships:
If we’re mutuals and we interact a lot, you’re welcome to ask me if I’d like to be your main!
Please don’t be offended if I deny, though; I typically want to pick those I trust to be my mains as well as people I can comfortably write with.
Not limited to them! I roleplay with duplicates galore so don’t be afraid to hit me up if you want to interact!
Pre-established relationships are a-okay in my book; if you have an idea for a relationship between our muses we can work towards, hit me up! I reblog those pre-established relationship memes every so often too. Romantic relationships link back to the shipping guidelines.
Also, friendship/family/rivalry relationships are EXTREMELY valid to me - so don’t feel scared about asking for them!
10. If you have any issues, please let me know and hopefully we can resolve it!
Mun is actually super nice, so don’t be afraid to hit her up!
I am absolutely terrible with IMs and Discord. I either respond quickly or days later, depends on my mood. Social anxiety tends to interfere with this (and more recently exhaustion from work) - but honestly, if you’ve sent something, I’ve likely read it and just haven’t gotten around to it yet! It’s nothing personal; trust me!
Please leave me out of drama; I’m here to have a good time, as is everyone else, and it pains me to see people arguing.
This is a little different with callouts - if I see anything on dash pertaining to any problematic users, I will take it into consideration and rb it if I believe them to be harmful.
11. To retierate, I tend to follow those that:
Write para and whom I feel my muse would click with.
Seem chill? Tone can really intimidate me honestly.
Have rules and about pages! Knowing the boudaries of my rp partners is super important as well as their lovely muses! Sometimes rules are enough, though, if you’re going to write the about eventually.
Tag their nsfw.
Don’t have massive icons - ie, have rp icons that take up an entire text post like 500x500 or something. I don’t want to clog the dash and it’s tiring to resize them.
…also, if I follow your hub blog (provided it doesn’t double as a personal), it generally means I’m cool with any blogs that are attached to it.
12. On threads…
If you’re not interested in a thread anymore, and would like to drop it, please let me know! I’d feel terrible if we’re both not having fun with it or if partners feel overwhelmed with the amount of threads we have.
Honestly, unless I let you know, our threads have no expiry date - so no need to worry about me dropping them without telling you. I can just be quite slow sometimes.
13. Mun does not equal muse! Anything my muse might say does not reflect on how I think unless I explicitly say so.
14. Know that if I follow you, I WANT to interact with you.
I literally couldn’t care less about follower counts. I care about YOU guys and our interactions.
15. Icons.
I make all of my icons by myself, however credit for the icon shape and psd goes here and here.
16. Rules are subject to change.
Please like this post if you’ve read the rules! You don’t have to, but it’s of personal reassurance to me if you have.

de rules:
1. Themes might very with this blog. It’ll typically be SFW, but there will likely be dark themes, violence and swearing.
Things will be tagged! I’ll try my best, anyways. If you want something in particular tagged, please let me know through ask / anon / im. The format I use for tagging is, for example, tw: swearing.
I don’t have any triggers but I do ask you tag all of your NSFW content.
That said, I won’t do anything NSFW - gore is okay, though.
I’m of age.
2. I’m private, meaning I only really roleplay with people I follow. This is so things don’t get too overwhelming and for me and to cement who I want to interact with. I generally follow most people if our writing clicks, though.
If I don’t follow you and you’d like me to check out your blog, lurk in my notifs. I’ll definitely see you and make note to check you out. Same with promos, or you can just rb them to a sideblog / send an ask with its url. I can’t gurantee I’ll follow, but I’ll certainly check it out!
If it’s a crossover, I have to know the fandom and be at least a little bit confident with it. This is so I’m able to work with you, our thread and have muse for it. You’re free to ask if I know of a fandom or not! I’ll have a list at some point.
I follow the tag #coolxnxblue. If there’s anything you want me to see, like dash commentary, just tag that and x-kit will alert me of your post! I may respond to ic stuff ic stuff if I’m feeling it.
In that sense, I’m chill with dash shenanigans with most folk, not just mutuals!

3. Please don’t rush me for starters or responses.
PLEASE understand that I have blogs galore and my muse tends to fluctuate; this can mean I’m everywhere at once and can end up neglecting a blog or two. It’s nothing personal; you know how muses are! Additionally, life happens to be a thing.
Please note the mun deals with anxiety and depression, and has part time jobs which are honestly tiring - this might affect how frequently she roleplays.
Chances are, I’ve probably has seen that bit of interactivity and just haven’t gotten around to responding yet.
My roleplaying style being para/multi-para, I may take a while to respond. I hoard drafts like a dragon - it’s really just the motivation to write and ship those out.

I answer asks from anyone - personals, rp blogs and anons. I’ll answer non-mutual asks occaisonally but I won’t be making threads out of them
4. Shippings? Heck yeah, I ship lots with my blue son! Just make sure they’re of similar age pls.
If I don’t happen to be interested, don’t force anything on my character.
I do not ship incestuous ships. Do NOT follow/interact if you do.
The ship has to have chemistry; I’m generally shipping trash, but if they don’t click, they don’t click, sorry.

Relationships are eternal until you deem otherwise. If you’re not interested in a ship anymore, just let me know!
Sonic X Tails won’t be happening on this blog, sorry.
5. Whilst I am of age, I’m not aiming for sexual content on this blog (and will not be dealing with fetishes). That stuff makes me uncomfortable, and I typically don’t recommend pulling it with my character if you’re interacting with me. Nonetheless, should it arise, I will tag it appropriately as nsfw //.
6. About reblogs…
I am not a meme source, and reblogs clog up my activity. Please reblog any ask / starter memes you find on this blog from their SOURCE. The exception to this rule is if there is no source; go ahead.

You’re free to like starter calls even if we’re not mutuals; I can check out your blog that way. I still only write starters for mutuals though.
I know pretty much most if not all Sonic media, bar Fleetway which I haven’t gotten around to reading yet. Since that’s unfamiliar territory, I’m unlikely to tread in it yet.
Starter memes are the BEST way to interact me because they just yeet a prompt at my face and really help me write starters. If you see me reblog one, send one!
If you want a certain verse, lemme’ know! Otherwise, I’ll either resort to game verse or whatever continuity your muse applies to (i.e, Sally (archie), Starline (idw), and so forth).
If you want to turn an ask into a thread, go ahead!
In that sense, I don’t recommend writing starters for me unless we’ve discussed something. I don’t like to leave anyone hanging.

THE SCRIPT:
1. Themes will vary with this blog. Bob is a morbid guy, so I wouldn’t advise following if you’re not used to his character. There will likely be violence, themes of murder and crime, as well as that messed up obsession with wanting to kill Bart Simpson. If you’re not comfortable with that, steer clear!
I will try my best to tag everything. These will be under the format of swearing tw. If you’d like me to tag anything specific, don’t hesitate to ask through anon / inbox / im!

4. Shippings? If they’re of similar age, sure! With Bob, it’s a little timey whimey since he’s married, but we could figure something out.
If I don’t happen to be interested, don’t force anything on my character.
I do not ship incestuous ships. Do NOT follow/interact if you do.
Also the same rule applies to this next thing. It would go without saying, but given the nature of this fandom... for the love of God, no shipping any of the kids with Bob.
Nonetheless, should it arise, I will tag it appropriately as nsfw //.
6. About reblogs…
I am not a meme source, and reblogs clog up my activity.
I know pretty much most Bob media, bar the comics because I’ve only read a few of them.
In that sense, I don’t recommend writing starters for me unless we’ve discussed something. I don’t like to leave anyone hanging.
Please don’t assume things about my muse. If you’re uncertain about things, ASK.
IMs are open to mutuals, if you want to do any in-depth plotting. I also have Discord if that’s more convenient for you!
15. Rules may be subject to change.
Please like this post if you’ve read the rules! You don’t have to, but it’s of personal reassurance to me if you have.

Rules:
HALLO THERE! Here’s my rules! They’re a bit long, but hopefully you can push through ‘em and we can get a chance at interaction!
1. Themes might vary with this blog. Although I’m typically SFW, I might touch upon dark topics here and there.
Things will be tagged! I’ll try my best, anyways. If you want something in particular tagged, please let me know. The format I use for tagging is, for example, tw: swearing.
I don’t have any triggers but I do ask you tag all of your NSFW content.
That said, I won’t do anything NSFW - gore is okay, though.
I’m of age.
2. I‘m a little selective, but otherwise - I’m open to canon, au, crossover, and original characters! As long as their muns rp literately/write para.
If it’s a crossover, I have to know the fandom and be at least a little bit confident with it. This is so I’m able to work with you, our thread and have muse for it.
As for following back, I usually take a week tops to do so - but if you’ve hit up my promo, I go through that eventually.
As I’ve said, I’m selective and as a result mutuals do take priority - but I don’t have to be following you for you to interact with me. It just means I’m more likely to interact with you if you’re a mutual.
Please note the mun deals with anxiety and depression - this might affect how frequently she roleplays.
Chances are, I’ve probably has seen that bit of interactivity and just haven’t gotten around to responding yet.
My roleplaying style being para/multi-para, I may take a while to respond. I hoard drafts like a dragon - it’s really just the motivation to write and ship those out.
Just a reminder I hoard all your asks too, even weeks later. If I don’t respond to it, I’m either keeping it for a rainy day, or just can’t find the muse/interest for it currently. If it’s been a month or two though, just assume it wasn’t working for me unless I’ve informed you otherwise.
4. Shippings? Heck yeah I’m down for the fluffy content, as long as they’re of similar age to my boio.
If I don’t happen to be interested, don’t force anything on my character.
I do not ship incestuous ships. Do NOT follow/interact if you do.
Sontails will not be happening on this blog either, sorry.
5. Whilst I am of age, I’m not aiming for sexual content on this blog (and will not be dealing with fetishes). That stuff makes me uncomfortable, and I typically don’t recommend pulling it with my character if you’re interacting with me. Nonetheless, should it arise, I will tag it appropriately. Also, Tails is a child. So no.
Please don’t reblog my art unless I’ve drawn it specifically for you or said you can. I either have that as do not reblog for a reason, or I am planning to post it on my art blog at some point.
This means:
I write my replies as detailed as I can muster.
Short responses (such as one-liners) in more serious threads where I’ve written a decent deal can instantly kill my muse for that thread.
Whilst I’d prefer for partners to at least somewhat match my length, it’s entirely up to you - just try your best and make sure you give me enough to work with. ♡
If my muse happens to go nuts out of nowhere - like, overboard - don’t stress too much about matching them.
If para roleplays aren’t your alley, I’m unlikely to roleplay with you. It’s nothing personal; it’s just finding muse for one-liner threads is incredibly difficult unless it’s dash shenanigans. Anything else outside that is fine, though - we can still have fun outside of proper threads.
If you need further context on the AU, the link to it’s tag is here! Otherwise just ask me!
Tails’ AU is one I’m very proud of and very attached to, so please don’t force your headcanons about him on me. If you’re unsure how certain events play out in the context of his universe, don’t hesitate to ask me about them!
That said, anything that might take place on this blog obviously isn’t canon to the AU itself; I just like writing for this boio and it helps me develop his character. It’s all hypothetical.
Additionally! Don’t worry too much if the headcanoned relationships between Tails and other muses don’t match yours. Those are mostly just guidelines for how Tails would USUALLY interact with your muse. I’m open to altering these relationships to better fit our threads! Don’t ever feel restricted to what I put down; it’s mostly just for context purposes because, well, Tails is absent. I’m an IM away for plotting.
8. Threads typically happen naturally with me, but if you’re looking for interaction opportunities:
I’ll have a permanent starter call somewhere for you to hit up; honestly though, if you’re a mutual? Pls feel free to hit it up.
Starter memes are the BEST way to interact me because they just yeet a prompt at my face and really help me write starters. If you see me reblog one, send one!
If there’s a verse you’re interested in, please specify.
If you want to turn an ask into a thread, go ahead!
I may not roleplay with every starter I am given - I’ll do a ‘background check’ if you’re a new blog on the block. If I don’t feel your writing style/length works with mine, I might not respond. Apologies. ;__;
Please don’t write para / novella starters up for me unless we’ve discussed something, sent something, or I’ve liked a starter call. I really don’t want to leave people hanging if I’m not interested.
IMs are open to mutuals, if you want to do any in-depth plotting.
I also have Discord! If you’re mutuals with me, feel free to ask for it!
9. Guidelines on mains and relationships:
If we’re mutuals and we interact a lot, you’re welcome to ask me if I’d like to be your main!
Please note that MAINS fall into two categories; one pertaining to Tails’ initial universe, and those pertaining to alternates. Although the latter is plenty, for clarity’s sake, there would be one alternate Tails might default to.
Also, friendship/family/rivalry relationships are EXTREMELY valid to me. GIMME’ ALL THE PRECIOUS BONDING CONTENT PLS. THIS BOY NEEDS FRIENDS.
10. If you have any issues, please let me know and hopefully we can resolve it!
Mun is actually super nice, so don’t be afraid to hit her up!
I am absolutely terrible with IMs and sometimes even Discord. I either respond quickly or days later, depends on my mood. Social anxiety tends to interfere with this - but honestly, if you’ve sent something, I’ve likely read it and just haven’t gotten around to it yet! It’s nothing personal; trust me! I just need a social breather every now and again.
Please leave me out of drama; I’m here to have a good time, as is everyone else, and it pains me to see people arguing.
11. It’s easier with a clean dash for me, so I’m more likely to follow people who:
Trim their posts.
Have rules and about pages! I always read those before interacting or following!
If you don’t have either of those, I’m likely not to follow you - so make sure that you do!
Anything Tails might say does not reflect on how I think unless I explicitly say so.
14. Know that if I follow you, I WANT to interact with you.
I literally couldn’t care less about follower counts. I care about YOU guys and our interactions.
15. If you’re OKAY with threads being set in Tails’ universe (and acting as his inverse counterparts), please like / reply to this post! It just lets me know I’m A-OK to shoot you asks pertaining to it, rather than the usual alternate shenanigans.
16. These rules may be subject to change.
Please like this post if you’ve read the rules! You don’t have to, but it’s of personal reassurance to me if you have.

Rules~
1. Themes will vary with this blog. Chances are, there’ll be dark themes, swearing, and violence. This is Bill Cipher - if you’re unsettled by the sort of content he might dish out, I wouldn’t recommend following.
Not that I would be writing it anyway.
2. I’m private, which means I only write with mutuals (this is for my own sanity / comfort; everyone’s cool!). I’ll write with canon, oc, and crossover characters. I tend to follow most people though.
I follow the tag #cantrcturn.
Given Bill’s canonical powers and presence in Gravity Falls, I know he’s kind of. OP. I am, however, open to discussing this sort of thing with you and how much he might know about your muse.
I’ll answer non-mutual asks occaisonally but I won’t be making threads out of them
4. Shippings? Not really looking for romantic ships, tbh. Anything else is gucci though.
If I don’t happen to be interested, don’t force anything on my character.
I do not ship incestuous ships. Do NOT follow/interact if you do.
The ship has to have chemistry; I’m generally shipping trash, but if they don’t click, they don’t click, sorry.

Omg 6, 22 or 24 for Drarry - I can’t decide which one as I think they’d all be amazing, so I’ll leave it up to you! :)
I have spent a day writing these, so I apologise if the quality’s really low. Fasting doesn’t really help, either XD
I answered 24 here for another person here, so you can go read it (AO3 version here). I answered six for you as a separate post here (and there’s also an AO3 version). And finally, here’s twenty two (which is also available on AO3): “Sorry.You’re the first person I’ve spoken to in ten years.” I’ve called the piece ‘Herbal Tea’. Yep, it’s one of those.
And yes, I answered them all, because I couldn’t help myself. A massive shoutout to @skarhead and @jostaart, though, because I trawled through their brilliant blogs for inspiration, and these three drarry fics are the result. Whilst they’re based on the prompt, not particular artwork, @skarhead and @jostaart was crucial for bringing my ideas to life! And um, I got a little carried away with this one, so some of it’s under a cut. I hope you enjoy it, and that it’s not completely boring. Here goes:
The November air is chilly, although the temperature isn’treally anything new to Harry, living in Britain. There’s something distinctlydifferent about it to October, though, and he takes a moment to pause andbreathe it in. He’s been doing that more and more; taking a moment to pause. Heneeds it nowadays, especially; ever since declining the position of Head Aurorand resigning completely, the press has been swarming around him insistently, which is a feat considering how much they regularly pester him about thecontinued absence of any romantic relationship. Hermione does her best to keepthem away, but it’s his problem to deal with, and deal with it he does.
Self-care is something he’s been neglecting for years now, trying to stay above everyone else’sstandards rather than his own. He should’ve been able to move on from the war,but his Mind Healer tells him that by throwing himself into the path of theDark Arts for a living, he’s been forcing himself to hang on to those toxicmemories. Well, not anymore, and he feels no obligation to explain it to anyoneapart from his friends and family, who wholeheartedly agree with him. At leasthe’s done that right.
Harry is rudely yanked out of his thoughts by someonerunning into him, full force. The weight of the person topples him over, andHarry is ready to give them a piece of his mind, before he looks up at a facethat, whilst having matured since he saw it last, is still shockingly familiar.
“…Malfoy?!” Ifthere was one person that would not have been found in Muggle Manchester, ofall places, it would be Draco Malfoy. Not only because Malfoy Manor was inWiltshire, and not even because he was in a Muggle area rather than a wizardingarea, but because Malfoy hadn’t been seenfor years. Most people assumed that he’d either remained reclusive within hisown house, or that he’d moved. Some hoped that he’d been dealt with, Harrybeing the polar opposite; he’d tried to find Malfoy multiple times, and forvarious reasons, with no success. He’d stopped himself from searching MalfoyManor, because it would’ve looked obsessive, and Ron and Hermione were alreadyworried for him.
And now, here he is, on top of Harry, looking terrified. Heclutches Harry’s jacket, and blurts:
“Potter, I know you hate me, but I will pay you whatever youwant to just get me out of here.” Hisvoice is rough and hoarse, and he seems more surprised than Harry is at hearingthose words. Harry wants to ask more, but at that moment, he hears the firstyell.
Malfoy’s crystal grey eyes look desperately into Harry’s,and something in him compels him to wrap one arm around the platinum blonde andDisapparate – straight to his house, which is under the Fidelius Charm. There’sno turning back now; Malfoy knows the location of his home.
Speaking of Malfoy, the man is passed out on his sofa. Hishair is expertly ruffled, and falls in waves around his angular face. He’slean; too lean, as if he hasn’t been eating well. Whilst he wears designerclothes (Muggle, strangely enough), it’s apparent that he’s been wearing themfor too long.
As dishevelled as he is, Malfoy still manages to look…angelic, almost, which is unsettling, because Malfoy is not an angel in any way. He decides to leave him for now, although questions are buzzing about his mind. Harry knows from experience thatit’s never a good idea to dwell on such thoughts, or to bombard a person withquestions after they’ve passed out.
Harry instead decides to make some hot drinks. Luna showedhim a wonderful recipe for various herbal teas that work different calmingeffects into a person, so Harry begins brewing a certain tea that has specialsoothing properties. Harry loses himself in the rhythm of stirring and addingingredients, to the extent that he doesn’t notice Malfoy until the blonde isstanding next to him. He says nothing, choosing to let Malfoy speak when he’scomfortable to.
It’s a surreal situation; standing in a cosy kitchen, thepeaceful aroma of herbal tea filling the air, with Malfoy by his side. It’s notunwelcome, though; Harry finds that he doesn’t mind the company. Malfoy clearshis throat.
“You may possibly have the most uncomfortable couch I’ve ever crashed on, Potter.” His voice isweak, but his tone strong, and Harry is briefly reminded of a darker time, andthe words, ‘I can’t be sure’. Hepushes it from his mind, and addresses Malfoy.
“Nice to see you haven’t changed, Malfoy.” He says itquietly, but Malfoy freezes at the words for a second, before replying.
“Sorry. You’re the first person I’ve spoken to in tenyears.” Harry drops the spoon, startled; he’s not expecting to hear that at all. Malfoy deftly catches thespoon, though, and takes over brewing. “That’s quite an advanced magical tearecipe you’re making, Potter,” he says absentmindedly. “Consider me impressed.”
Harry still hasn’t quite absorbed the information, and heknows it’s a bad idea to ask, but he does it nonetheless.
“Malfoy…what do you mean, first person you’ve spoken to inten years?” Harry speaks slowly and hesitantly, not sure how Malfoy is going toreact. The blonde simply scoffs.
“Potter, I’m not an injured kitten. You don’t need to usethat tone with me.”
“Sorry.”
“You’re still doing it.”
“Sorry?” Harry doesn’t want to overstep his boundaries; heneeds to avoid Malfoy closing off. The kitchen is quiet for a minute or so, thesilence broken only by the soft swish of the tea being stirred.
“Thanks, though,”Malfoy says after a while, his voice softer than before. “for helping me getout of there. But I don’t want you to treat me like a trauma victim.”
Harry doesn’t know if it’s right to respond, so he doesn’t,but gets two mugs out of the cupboard. Malfoy pours the drinks, appearingrelaxed, but Harry doesn’t believe that he’s just suddenly alright.
“Yeah, okay. But I’m not going to tell anyone anything youtell me. What you say here stays here, I swear. So, try to trust me, even ifit’s only for now. Please.” Malfoy sighs.
“Do you have a better place to talk?”
*
Snowflakes fall lightly, and lights twinkle in the distanceas he and Malfoy sip their hot drinks out on the balcony.
The balcony is one of the perks of Harry’s home, one hewasn’t quite expecting. It’s spacious, and with a few waterproof charms, warming charms, as well as a few select beanbags, it’s become one of hisfavourite spots in the house.
“And I just stopped trying. There were so many people afterme. I would stay over at Blaise’s, or Pansy’s, or Greg’s, never sayinganything, but they were probably the only reason I survived. It was never safeenough, though; I had to keep moving constantly.”
“The DMLE got rid of all the members, though; we trackedthem all down. It was a major investigation at the time.” Malfoy laughsbitterly.
“The Aurors got rid of the main body. They had hired peopleto carry out their dirty work for them. As you know, some of the leaders werein too high a position to have each target killed personally. The people afterme were some of those employees, still intent on revenge.” Harry groans, frustrated.
“This is a whole other issue. How many were there?” Malfoy’slooking out over the other buildings, and something about the sight draws Harryto him.
“About thirty-five,” he says. Harry can’t believe thatMalfoy was able to survive that many trained killers after him especially. He’sabout to reply, when Malfoy continues. “I don’t blame them. I can’t beforgiven.”
“Malfoy-”
“Draco. Call meDraco. We aren’t kids anymore.”
“Draco,” Harry corrects himself, turning to face himproperly. “the people hunting down ex Death Eaters are the ones in the wrong. It’s the kind of behaviour that started a war in the first place. And I forgaveyou years ago; you are most definitelycapable of being forgiven, but you have to forgive yourself first. No-one else can do that for you.”
Draco chuckles.
“When did you become so sappy, Potter?” Harry rolls hiseyes. Of course Draco isn’t going to take it seriously. These are words comingfrom him after all.
“If I get to call you Draco, you get to call me Harry.”Draco shoots him a pointed look.
“Fine then, Harry;where is this all coming from? Younger you probably would’ve told me that Iabsolutely can’t be forgiven and thatI’m being pathetic. What changed?”
“I grew up,” Harry answers seriously.
“You mean you grew older. You’re still really freaking short,” Draco teases.
“Shut up,” Harrygrumbles in response, but he’s smiling.
*
“Are you sure about this?” Draco asks sceptically, surveyingthe room. It’s well furnished, with an ensuite and all. A king-sized bed stands proudly in the centre, with lusciousred curtains surrounding the four-poster bed.
“Draco, Narcissa wantsyou to stay with me. I’m not going to say no to her. And besides, now that youaren’t as bigoted, you’re actually a decent person.” Draco sighs in defeat, answering back nonetheless.
“Since when were youso chummy with my mother?” heretorts. But Draco full well knows that this is the safest place for him. Hismother was brave enough to approach the Saviourof the Wizarding World, of all people, and who’s Draco to say no to somerefuge?
Plus, Harry himself is a bonus. Gone is the scrawny, righteous kid that Draco always despised. He’s not actually grown that muchtaller, but it suits him. Years of Auror work have served him well, buildingsome muscle and defining his jawline, and Draco has found himself staring moretimes than he’s comfortable with.
“Are you really going to throw a fuss about this?” Harry asks with an eyebrowraised, and Draco smiles sweetly.
“Of course not, oh Saviour.” Harry punches him in the armlightly.
“I’ve told you not to call me that, Ferret.”
“Whatever you say, GoldenBoy.”
“Prat.”
“Scarhead.”
“Are you two really bickering at this age?” Narcissa says, appearing from the stairs. “Anyonewould’ve thought you two were still schoolboys. Now,” she says, addressingDraco, “are you all settled in?”
“Yes, Mother,” Draco replies, earning a look from Harry.Narcissa doesn’t seem to notice this when she turns to him.
“Please tell me if he causes any sort of trouble. I know howpicky he can be.” Draco splutters.
“Mother!” Narcissa only smiles knowingly at her son, sweeping him into a hug.
“You know I love you, Draco. Stay safe for me, darling.”Draco hugs her back for a long moment, flooded by how much he’s missed her. Shepulls back and looks at him. “You’re safe; Harry Potter is looking after you.”
And aren’t those just the words that he never imagined hewould hear?
*
The first time Harry wakes up next to Draco is over a monthlater, on Christmas Day. Well, wake upis relative term. It’s much more accurate to say that he’s forced awake by aparticularly grouchy Draco yelling in his ear. He opens his eyes blearily tofind that he’s lying on Draco’s chest, arms wrapped out around him. Harry turnsa bright red and scrambles back, embarrassed and confused.
“Draco? What are you doing in my bed?” Draco’s cheeks becomea matching shade of red.
“You forgot to put up those Silencing Charms last night.” Oh shit. “You were screaming, and I cameto wake you up, but you, uh…you seemed to want me to stay. So I did.”
If the ground could just open up and swallow him, that wouldbe wonderful.
“Yeah, um…sorry about that.” Draco rolls his eyes.
“Don’t fucking apologise, Harry; it was my own decision.”Harry tries to respond, but ends up yawning, making Draco smile a little.
“What time is it, anyway?” Harry asks, rubbing his eyes inan attempt to feel more awake. It doesn’t work.
“Six a.m.,” Draco replies smoothly.
“What?! Why the hell would you wake me up so early,Draco?” Harry complains, but Draco simply leaves the room. Harry follows him, demanding an explanation. They end up in the living room together, where Dracopoints to a present under the tree that Harry is certain wasn’t there before. It’s addressed to him. Harry hesitantly picks it up.
“I don’t know if you’re waiting for next Christmas,” Dracodrawls, “but I’d recommend you open it.” Harry doesn’t say anything, butcarefully pulls the ribbon off, and not-so-delicately gets rid of the wrappingpaper. Inside is a perfectly sculpted crystal snow globe, with two miniaturefigures inside it, sitting on a balcony and sipping drinks. Harry stares at it,transfixed.
“Here,” Draco says, gently twisting a key on the side of theglobe. Soft music begins to play, and the figures rotate slowly.
“Draco,” Harry breathes. “It’s…it’s gorgeous. You didn’t have to…”
“I thought it would look good on the mantelpiece,” heresponds simply, placing it there himself. He turns back to Harry, trying togauge Harry’s next move. “Well…Merry Christm-oof!” Harry tackles him to the ground in a bearhug, and they staylike that, until Harry pulls back slightly.
“I don’t know about you, but I’m frankly still knackered.Wanna get some more sleep?” Draco grins at him in a way that makes Harry’sheart clench ever-so-slightly.
He doesn’t know whatit is exactly, but Harry does knowthat this is the beginning of something great.
As they go back to bed, comfortable in each other’s embrace, snowflakes begin to fall softly outside, just like on the very first day thatthe universe threw Harry and Draco back together.
Yes, it was fricking long. Hope you liked it, though! Have a lovely day

Reaction to Fathmecomic updates
CHARACTERS
A bit more about the characters in Fathme: And My Reactions no one asked for !
Conway Moore Age: 19 Conway is an intelligent and curious 19 year old trans guy with a fascination for mythology and folklore.  He loves the sea, even though he’s not a particularly good swimmer, and often goes out on a small boat he borrows at one of his part-time jobs at the Historic Lighthouse Museum.  Conway has selkie blood on his father’s side.  He lives with his father, his stepmother and his half sister.  Conway is bisexual.
Great integrations not sure about locking down the ages. Even the source material carefully avoids this so there is more... wiggle room Great for profile but makes things more sterile and worse age comes with expectations.  See how the original handles Sadie and then Lars and are able to go different places because of SOME ambiguity used for good effect.
Kai Age: 19?  Approximately. Kai is a mershark, one of several species of mers that inhabit the ocean.  His species is at the top of the food chain, but Kai spends a lot of his time wandering around and exploring, trying to find things to liven up a mostly dull existence.  Most mersharks aren’t particularly social, something Kai tries to emulate, but he tends to feel lonely and disconnected and is constantly looking for some kind of validation.  Kai is gay.
Things continue define and change.  going from bicurious virgin with social issues, implying he’s in a community to this and also definitely gay. eh...we’ll see it IS a character summary and new developments might work out.
Emelie Moore Age: 13 Emelie is Conway’s half sister.  They have the same father and different mothers.  Emelie is quite smart for her age and has focus issues in class that often lead to her getting in trouble with teachers. Emelie identifies as a trans/nb girl, and though her parents are supportive they still hope this is a phase she’s going through.
I was only joking I swear!!! No deliberate ocd mentions.  It seems neuratypicalness is a thing for Sal so might be hinting but either way and interesting development.
Mona Wick Age: 20 Mona comes from a family of witches on her father’s side.  Even if her grandmother is a witch, she still tends to point out that she’s not one herself.  Mona is bright and has a bit of a weird streak, but she is more down to earth than a lot of the folks around her.  Don’t question that she carries a pack of tarot cards in her purse though, fortune telling is just for fun, it’s not magic.  Mona is demisexual.
Woot people remembered witches are male and female even in the “burning times.  Eh, the Age thing also makes my hand waver in uncertainty as does Mona.  Its a type thing.  But I have faith in Sal and just sharing and developing the blog’s  and title and sharing insights and updates regularly.
Lou Moore Age: 46 Lou is a selkie, born in a community of selkies.  As the community dwindled for various reasons, Lou chose to go on land and make a living among humans where it was safer.  To that end, he has hidden their past from his children and tried hard to hide the magic from them as well.  He lives in fear of the day they discover their selkie abilities.
Darnit great teasing setup.  I don’t know why I thought his name was Buddy and then figured famous nude seal.  It seems Selkies blossom at different ages.  Does feel a little bit of a spoiler.  But more definition incoming.  Lou’s age feels right but just you wait, Bryke got caught by the artists cannot math with ages and eras.  It happens. Big surprised decided to make the method of Connie’s (haha) mystical heritage his present father.  But again this is a developing story and fun to see what plays out.
He’s not really spending his days posing nude for tourists, ducking his future son in law for dinner and headbutting other men’s heads to take their spot and barking at passerbys thought right?😜
 ORIGINAL POST
Okay well here we go, experimentation with styles and the beginning of some actual panel in a page as to portrait work.  Showing off that well earned panel layout and comic art experience.
Sorry too many artist I know are only good at the “money shots”  Layout or putting it all together is a skill part of but distinct with drawing.  And if Tite Kubo can fall to “everything is a damned splash page” I kinda want reassurance even for character and visual focus sequential narrative with images and layout won’t be neglected.  Or its like accessing someone’s layout, grammar, and prose to make their story or writing approachable.

OK so it wasn’t phenomenal, however fond of the word I am, I just liked the convenience of the word-play. Don’t get me wrong, it was nice, but it didn’t enthral me as much as some of the other places we’ve been to on our journeys so far.
We had arrived an hour ahead of schedule in our bunk-bedded bus. Bleary-eyed, we searched for an Uber (we’d been tipped off that they’d actually got Uber here) and, after watching him crawl down the road to us, we finally dumped our bags in the boot and hopped in the arctically air-conditioned taxi and explained the route to him three times. Once at the hotel, Henny managed to sleep, as only she can, but I was awake and using the wifi to try and contact Arthur, who needed to be awake for his early flight to Phuket. Leaving our bags at the hotel, we followed the map to his last shared location and found his room after looking through the guestbook.
Knocking on his door at 7 in the morning shouting things like ‘Room Service’, ‘Thai Massage’ and imitating Conchita from Family Guy (‘Nooooo, Misser superman no home’), he finally relented and opened the door. Turns out we were actually doing him and the boys a favour, as they wouldn’t have heard their alarms and would have overslept. Arthur and Will had bought Cambodian football shirts at the central market the day before and had been given one of them in the wrong size – medium. Cambodian shirt sizes are a little less generous than ours, so when They had tried on the medium-sized one, it looked like the fat kid from school wearing a shirt at the pool. We dived off through the rubbish-strewn streets and arrived at the recently renovated French-designed Central Market. An impressive Art-deco design, it was full of stalls selling everything from live fish being slaughtered at the request of a sadistic customer to fake Bluetooth speakers, which Arthur had also purchased yesterday. They found the stall they were looking for and after a brief to-and-fro, exchanged the shirts then had to run back. Henny and I hadn’t eaten, so we stayed behind and with a rushed ‘See you in New Zealand’, went off to find some food.
I was looking to be culinarily adventurous, so engaged the services of a lady who was making a chicken noodle soup for a throng of slurping customers. We sat down and watched as she combined the necessary ingredients in a bowl and poured some broth over it, sprinkling a handful of coriander over the top for good measure. We also added some deep-fried bread sticks about as long as my hand which were the Cambodian crouton replacements. The broth was warm and delicious, the fried bread fatty and hearty and the chicken almost inedible. The lady had seemingly sought out the bits of chicken which one normally has difficulty navigating when carving a roast and plonked them all in our bowl. We survived by sucking the meat off the bones though, but I did have the lion’s share, Henny deciding to take it easy for this particular dish (I don’t think the boiled whole chicken staring out at us from behind the display glass was helping her appetite).
After paying 2 dollars for the experience, I promised Henny that we could find a nice western coffee shop for our hobbit-like second breakfast. We headed back in the direction of our hotel and found a hip little place for an iced coffee and a cheese and ham toastie. Henny’s appetite finally satisfied, we decided to pay a visit to our rooftop pool and had a lazy late morning/early afternoon session of sunbathing and reading with a glorious view and a pool that I could swim two lengths of underwater, as I love to do in hotel pools.
When I’d had enough of relaxing (it didn’t take too long, I can tell you), I went down and wrote the previous blog post and then looked up some jobs in New Zealand and polished off a whole bag of potato sticks in the process (I’m so sorry, diet – I swear I’ll get back to you soon!!!). Browsing through various websites full of a variety of things (vineyard technician, sales assistant, trainee shepherd – bring your own sheepdog), my excitement and anticipation grew and grew until I had to remind myself that I still had a month to explore and enjoy the delights of Asia in. There are so many things to look forward to, I can’t focus on anything at the moment (insufferable I know, I’m just a bit excited ok?).
We’d also booked ourselves onto a sunset cruise which our hotel organised for its guests., so at 5 o’clock, after a very polite courtesy call to our hotel room to remind us, we trotted off to the bus and drove at a snail’s pace down to the harbour where we jumped on the ‘OKAY’ branded boat, which looked a little junk-esque (the boat style, not that it was at all bad quality) and found a lovely seat in the bow. After a couple of games of musical chairs as we tried to guess which way forwards was (Henny doesn’t like going against the direction of travel), we were sipping cocktails and watching a huge fireball sink below the horizon. It was spectacular, and the lighting was very good for taking photos of Henny too, which she wasn’t really sure she liked. I’ll probably include them here anyway though, just to annoy her a bit.
We had a bite to eat on the boat (a chicken yellow noodle stir-fry between two) but were still hungry when we landed 2 hours later. I still felt the need to be adventurous and had been curous about many street food stalls selling baguettes, usually accompanied by a bbq. I decided that I must try this local delicacy and approached a man who was selling the baguettes and asked him what was worth trying. Eventually we came to the understanding that these small, red sausages were the bees’ knees and so I ordered a whole baguette with them. He toasted the baguette, smeared it with some yellow paste (it was sweet, may have been condensed milk or honey) and placed the sliced sausage inside. I was wondering what noise the meat had made before it had become a sausage but didn’t feel like bringing the full spectrum of my farmyard animal impressions to this street in Phnom Penh, and instead kept quiet. The flavour was deep and rich, like venison or black pudding, but I had a feeling that some of the gristle had been left in as there were still some chewy bits which I had to power through. This, combined with my growing fear that the sausage may have been more ‘woof’ than ‘moo’ or ‘oink’, made me finish as quickly as I could. It had been really interesting flavour-wise, but I don’t think I’d repeat the experience before finding out what had actually gone into it.
After grabbing a 50-cent beer to steady my nerves (and stomach) and a papaya salad for Henny in a local restaurant where a middle-aged man flirted far too much with a teenage Cambodian waitress (though she didn’t seem to mind and laughed like a hyena whenever he said anything), we headed back to the hotel and flopped exhaustedly into our bed. A very long couple of days it had been and we slept like the heaviest of logs.
The next day we woke up early, as has become our habit, and got excited; our first buffet-style breakfast was waiting just a few floors away, just another half-floor above the rooftop pool. We went for it, mixing western and eastern food to mixed reviews, but decided that the green curry with rice was excellent and the ham and cheese omelette was also pretty damn fine. We stuffed ourselves to avoid having to buy lunch and made sure to monitor the interesting eating habits our fellow diners from various Asian countries. It was fascinating to see these well-dressed and obviously intelligent people slurping noodles into their mouths, which they neglected to close as they chewed camel-like, a dangle of saliva never far away from their chins. I wonder if they say the same about us (“He didn’t even have his mouth open – you couldn’t tell what ratio of rice to curry he’d put in there!” or “His chopstick-work was so far below par, I thought I’d spit out my rice wine”) or if they’re just nice, unjudgemental beings like the rest of you.
After waddling back to the lift, grabbing our stuff from the room and heading down to the lobby, we began negotiations on a tuk-tuk to take us to the days’ main events – the sombrely-named Killing Fields and S21, a former Khmer Rouge prison. I like to keep these blog posts relatively jolly and high-spirited, and have thought about writing my thoughts on the two memorial sites in a separate post, to give them, and me, the space required to describe and analyse them effectively. In brief: the Khmer Rouge tortured and killed an estimated 3 million people between 1976 and 1979, before they were forced out of power by a joint Cambodian and Vietnamese government. Pol Pot remained the leader recognised by the west until the early 1990s and lived to his mid-70s and denied responsibility for the killings. He’s definitely up there on my list of people who deserve absolutely no thought or respect whatsoever. S21 was where thousands were tortured and died; the killing fields were where they were sent and murdered when S21 had run out of room to store the corpses. It was a chilling day to say the least, and both Henny and I were glad when we had finally put it behind us and could escape our thoughts. Henny escaped to the rooftop pool and I went on a long walk along the harbourside, where the locals were preparing for the imminent lunar new year and its influx of tourists and money.
Tumblr media
One of the revellers taking a crazy ride
I saw a number of street food sellers trying to sell small shellfish which they had on their carts by the thousand, A lady was also collecting some flowers or something from the central reservation of the road, leaving her bike in the nearest lane as she did. A group of tourists were feeding the pigeons (in direct contradiction of my Trafalgar Square-based sensitivities) and a cat was, rather unsuccessfully, trying to hunt one of the fat ex-dinosaurs for its dinner. Elsewhere, a large, colourful screen was flashing images of what promised to be an excellent celebration for the lunar new year, but some bright soul had left the video control panel open so that it blocked the top left-hand corner of the screen. I walked along the vast Mekong river where swallows flitted by. Some boys were playing street football (I got a couple of good action shots) and some men were playing a version of badminton with what looked like a plastic bottle and instead of racquets they used their feet to bat the shuttlecock back and forth.
Then, a little further on, I saw a man working, completely on his own, trying to move a rock from the side of a path which was being redeveloped to improve the riverside further. Again and again he tried to shift this boulder, but it was only moving an inch at a time. Cracking, I thought, a perfect opportunity for a photograph. Then it came: a ferry with one of the most capitalist slogans emblazoned on its side drifted past and this man, who had been working so hard to improve this one small part of his country all alone, moving away from its natural, wild self and towards a uniform, westernised, Coca-cola Cambodia, had a glimpse of its future as he took a break. It will be hard work, but the unforgivable actions of the Khmer Rouge can be countered by the continued efforts of the Cambodians themselves and continue to bring sustainable economic and social development to this fascinating, beautiful and varied country. I hope this doesn’t mean that it’ll lose its wild charm, but if it can improve the day-to-day lives of the everyday Cambodians, it will be for the best. I know I said I’d keep it light but have got a little preachy. I’ll stop now.
Tumblr media
I returned to the hotel room via the red light district (by accident, I assure you dear readers; I experienced enough of those sorts of sights during my stay in Hamburg) and found Henny writing her blog post. After sharing accounts of our afternoons, we had a quick dinner and headed to a cool rooftop bar for a 2-4-1 cocktail, then back to our room and to bed for our early start the next day – we had a bus to Sihanoukville booked for 8am, which meant very little time at the breakfast buffet. A short tuk-tuk ride and we climbed into a Toyota Hilux-type van and were surrounded by other people’s bags. With a lack of both leg space and sleep, we left Phnom Penh for the last leg of our time in Cambodia. That is a tale for another post my dear readers, so until then I’ll let you get back to whatever you were doing before you read this all the way through.
Yours apologetically,
Boulders.

Women Journalists In Rom-Coms Are Trainwrecks. Here’s Why That Matters.
New Post has been published on https://usnewsaggregator.com/arts-culture/women-journalists-in-rom-coms-are-trainwrecks-heres-why-that-matters/
Women Journalists In Rom-Coms Are Trainwrecks. Here’s Why That Matters.
By now, you might have seen Netflix’s made-for-streaming Christmas romantic comedy, “A Christmas Prince.” It’s a holiday rom-com in the tradition of countless Hallmark Christmas movies, crossed with “The Princess Diaries” and “The Prince and Me.” It’s short, it’s cheaply made, it’s deeply satisfying without being terribly deep.
The heroine, Amber, is a hardworking young editor who’s desperate to be taken seriously as a real journalist. She’s assigned to cover what looks to be a looming abdication by Prince Richard, the heir to the throne of the fictional European nation of Aldovia (which presumably shares a border with Genovia and enjoys warm diplomatic relations with Zamunda). She’s out of her depth on her first big story, but Amber is plucky and has not been taught the basic tenets of journalistic ethics, so she poses as a tutor to Prince Richard’s precocious younger sister, Emily, to get her big scoop. Along the way, a nefarious royal cousin tries to steal the throne from Richard, Amber teaches Emily how to be a down-to-earth cut-loose little princess and Richard, of course, falls for Amber. The movie ends with him ascending to the throne, proposing to her, and promising that even though she’ll be a princess she can still keep her journalism career. Sure.
There may be no job more common among romantic comedy heroines than journalist. In the last few decades, some of the best romantic comedies — “When Harry Met Sally…”, “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Morning Glory” among them — have had heroines who work in the fourth estate. Some of the worst ones — “The Ugly Truth,” “Rumor Has It,” “Sex and the City” and its sequel — have as well. Then there’s “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” (women’s magazine columnist), “Never Been Kissed” (metro reporter), “Knocked Up” (E! Entertainment reporter), “13 Going on 30” (women’s magazine editor). And “The Devil Wears Prada.” And “Going The Distance.” And “Trainwreck.” And “Top 5.” To say nothing of rightly beloved classics like “Sleepless in Seattle,” in which the heroine works for the Baltimore Sun, and “Broadcast News,” in which the heroine works in broadcast news.
Journalism has been a standard profession for romantic comedy heroines for decades, and one of the genre’s best heroines, Hildy Johnson in 1940′s “His Girl Friday,” is a wisecracking, hard-charging, natural-born reporter. This isn’t so surprising: Moviegoers understand the profession; they have regular contact with its product, and for all the long hours and layoffs and other assorted indignities, it still carries a whiff of cosmopolitan excitement. Besides, writers tend to write what they know, and one thing screenwriters know is lots of people who work in media.
This year has been marked by good-faith scrutiny and bad-faith attacks on the credibility of the press. It has also been marked by the still-only-partial revelation of the extent to which women in the workplace are seen as ornamental, not essential ― a belief of which rampant sexual harassment is only one symptom. As we curl up on the couch and turn on a favorite rom-com after a long day of learning — often from female journalists! — about the predations of powerful men, we should ask ourselves a question: What are these movies teaching us about women, journalism, work and love?
With few exceptions, rom-com journalist heroines are good at their jobs. They love their jobs, even those who don’t spend a lot of screen time actually doing them. And with few exceptions, rom-com journalist heroines use their work for two purposes: to get a man, or to get a man back.
In “Trainwreck,” Amy Schumer’s character dates and falls for the man she’s assigned to profile for her men’s magazine. In “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” women’s magazine columnist Andie is assigned to date a man, drive him away and then write about how she did it. In “13 Going on 30,” Jennifer Garner’s Jenna uses a big redesign of her women’s magazine to get close to a photographer she has a crush on. In “The Ugly Truth,” Katherine Heigl’s character declares her love for her co-host on live television. And in “Sleepless in Seattle,” Meg Ryan’s Annie uses her newspaper’s database to look up the personal information of a man whose voice she heard on the radio late at night one time, and then flies across the country to visit him at his home.
Good journalism occasionally happens along the way: Bridget Jones lands an exclusive interview with a human rights activist (because the man she’s interested in sets it up for her). But that’s not the journalism we’re asked to cheer for. The professional accomplishments the audience is asked to applaud are the ones that fuse the personal with the professional in sometimes disturbing ways.
In “Never Been Kissed,” Drew Barrymore’s Josie, a copy editor, gets her big chance to be an investigative reporter when she goes undercover at a high school, posing as a student. In her time undercover, she falls for her teacher, and the teacher, who thinks she is 17, falls for her. Her editor presses her to expose him in print, but she refuses. The story she writes, in the end, is not about a public school teacher crossing boundaries with one of his students. Instead, she uses her big shot at a front-page story to engineer a reconciliation with that man.
“A certain teacher was hurt on my path to self-discovery,” Josie writes in her final copy, neglecting to mention that while she was discovering herself, she was also discovering that a grown man had been getting way too close to someone he believed to be a minor and a student in his charge. “Although this article may serve as a step, it in no way makes up for what I did to him.” As a reminder, what she did “to him” was her job, but she did it badly, because she fell in love with a source who might be a criminal, and then didn’t run the story she’d found. “To this man: you know who you are. I am so sorry. And I would like to add one more thing. I think I am in love with you.”
To get him back, she asks him in her article to meet her on the pitcher’s mound at the school baseball team’s big game, and kiss her. Her editor and the paper’s editor-in-chief show up, and the EIC is delighted to see so many readers in attendance, invested in the personal life of one of his reporters. The giant exposé the paper didn’t publish is never mentioned again, another explosive story about a predatory male quietly dropped by the men in charge.
It’s not only rom-com journalists who are depicted as easily distracted from their work: In this genre, it happens to heroines who are doctors and lawyers, too. And as rom-com heroines are often relegated to distinctly gendered jobs — teacher, baker, wedding planner, children’s book shop owner — there is something heartening about watching movies in which women work in an often male-dominated field like journalism. But not all representation is good representation — particularly not when the professional ambitions of women are depicted as an embarrassingly earnest youthful phase, to be discarded as soon as the right man comes along.
At the beginning of these movies, women journalists are hungry to report “real” news and to be taken seriously as journalists. By the end, they’re confessing their love on live TV or running their heartbroken apologies in print. In “A Christmas Prince,” Amber’s blog post about “the real story” of her time in Aldovia is so powerful that it brings the prince to her door on New Year’s Eve to propose. He then swears that he’d never ask her to give up her career, but in the magic moment of the proposal in the snow, it’s never explained to us how Amber will keep her career while also being a full-time princess. The lesson is plain: A big professional break isn’t enough of a happy ending. For that, you need a man. And once you get him, the career is kind of optional.
The blurring of boundaries for these heroines is telling. Their work becomes a route to romantic happiness, a means to an end rather than the end itself. Sometimes it happens by the heroine’s design, and sometimes it happens by accident; regardless of why or how, it happens. In a moment when a public debate is raging about what is and isn’t appropriate behavior in a professional environment — what’s romance and what’s harassment? — the only genre made for and about women hasn’t helped matters. Rom-coms assure us that no amount of inappropriate workplace behavior is truly inappropriate if you’re in love by the time the credits roll. Katherine Heigl’s employee watches as a stranger switches on Heigl’s vibrating panties with a remote control, triggering an orgasm during a business dinner? That’s fine; the audience knows they’re meant for each other, and the happy ending proves them right.
Much fun has been poked at Amber’s empty story notes in “A Christmas Prince.” A shot of her computer screen reveals that many of her notes ― “I have to find out!!”; “I still don’t know the real story”; “I have to dig deeper” ― essentially amount to “I should probably do my job, huh.” So she should. But she uses unethical means to do it, and once it’s done, she implicitly removes herself from journalism in the name of love.
If the last two months have taught us anything, it’s that real women’s careers are too often made collateral damage, belittled or eliminated by a culture that considers men’s work to be far more valuable. And, these last two months have shown us that women journalists, when they do their jobs well, can reshape the world for the better. It would be nice if romantic comedies showed us the same thing.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story erroneously identified the prince in “A Christmas Prince” as Edward.
