I don't think it's a cash grab on nostalgia, it's giving people more of what they want.

I know I stopped watching a half-season into 12 (the one where Mazie Williams did a guest spot) and haven't been able to maintain any interest since, but I'm planning on watching the 10.3, or whatever they are, epsiodes.

I mean that sort of proves my point, doesn’t it? You wouldn’t be coming back to it if it weren’t for the nostalgia for Tennant’s Doctor. That’s fine, he was a good Doctor, but it’s a deliberate choice to do something that has never been done on Doctor Who before, which is having the Doctor regenerate back into a previous actor. Giving ‘the people what they want’ (as in, not the fans of the show now but those who watched it back in the late 00s) by bringing back a popular Doctor is very much a marketing strategy to bring back old viewers, and that feels very antithetical to what the show is about! I’m all for old Doctors coming back for specials, I think that can be super fun, but each Doctor is their own character, each change is significant, and from a narrative perspective it’s kinda crap to say, oh the Tenth Doctor’s back and he’s the same character as he was! (I’m basing this on the short teaser so am eager to be proven wrong), negating what’s happened since (which is a whole bloody lot). Also, and I think this is particularly why the decision rubs me the wrong way, Jodie Whittaker got so much hate from a loud group of fans during her run. To have her then regenerate back to Tennant it’s almost like ‘wait! Come back fanboys! We made a mistake’ and seeing all the comments saying ‘finally Doctor Who is back’ really just uurghhhhhh. That’s not directed at you by the way. And I am very much going full fanboy mode over here when to most it’s not that deep. But! Ncuti Gatwa! It’s like they don’t have faith in him to carry the show forward and keep people interested.

In the end, I don’t really mind. I’ll watch the episodes and I’ll probably enjoy them (looking at those obscure weird comic characters they’re bringing back, it’s sure to be interesting). But I can’t shake that knee-jerk reaction of bitterness seeing people coming back saying ‘finally Doctor who will be good again’ when it’s always been good (and bad), and it has always, always, been about growth and change.

So. What did I THOUGHT about the upcoming canon designs of the characters in the illustrated novel DCTL ? That they were going to be bland and disappointing. That the graphic novel was going to visually portray the characters in such inaccurate ways that it was going to be very uncomfortable to watch.

What do I think now : that even though I didn’t expected much, I was still INCREDIBLY disappointed and upset. Once again, I’m waiting to see Sammy and Tom to express myself on these ‘representations’, but oh boy. It's off to a very, VERY bad start.

Will I only draw according to the canon ? : lmao NEVER. Firstly, because these designs aren't canon (as M*ke Mood announced a few days ago on Twitter) and because, out of respect and love for the characters, I'm not going to rely on the designs of artists who obviously haven't read the book carefully and had probably never heard of Batim before being hired to illustrate DCTL.

About the fact that a lot of people were afraid that the designs will be bad, turns out they were right to be worried ! Given what was done to Norman, I really fear the worst for Tom and Sammy. Not to mention the movie to come..

And finally, I'm delighted that you like my designs <3 of course, there's no way I'm going to stop drawing my comfort characters just because some stubborn, arrogant devs decided that the characters they'd created deserved neither respect nor depth. If a medium lacks representation, it's up to the artists to pick up the slack !

Like most of what we find of her is in the Odyssey, and even then, in my opinion, Homer I almost feel purposefully makes her a bit of an enigma. As we're in Odysseus' "POV" most of the time, and it's kind of a "She tricks the trickster, she tricks the narrator, she tricks the suitors, she tricks the reader, etc."

But even with this lil bit of "sneakiness" with her, we still get so many hints of her character and who she is and I adore it 🥹

Even then she has a lot of background lore that is just SOOOO much fun to play with. Her being of Naiad descent (whether 50-75% depending on what myths you go with), her many brothers and one sister, Her dad being a racer, her being cousins with Helen, Castor, Pollux, Clytemnestra Sparta itself, And that's just background lore!!!! There's so much to play with and that makes it so fun!

And well, like, I KNOW I'm the reason for a big boom of "Water Wife" lol 😅 Were there "Naiad Penelopes" before I came back on Tumblr? YES! :D Absolutely! I'm definitely NOT the first "Naiad Penelope" person!

But I DID create "Water Wife" AND I know I help cause more Water Pennys to be in the world >:3 Even if folks weren't directly inspired by me, they probably got it from someone else who was! :3 and I know my headcanons are often being used by others.

I know I'm not the only Penelope fan <3 I know there are others. Many lovely fans and creators :3 This isn't to negate them and the love and works. <3

But in fandom in general, In some ways, I...I'm a lil sad that like, a lot of the info that some people have on her in the fandom I know is because of me 😓 Like...Why did it take someone else to be a nerd about her for others to be a nerd about her, you know?

Like, it makes me happy that people are finally giving her love and seeing a lot more fics and headcanons with her as a focal point but like, I'm sad feeling like I started it in fandom (again, Penelope HAS been praised throughout the ages after all) recently. Why did it take ME to get others so nuts about her? Why do I see most folks caring about her simply because Odysseus and Telemachus do?

It's like, there are many Odysseus bloggers, there are a few Telemachus bloggers (Hi! :D ), but there are few, (if really many others) blogs that are like "most stuff I do is Penelope, Odysseus and others are there sometimes but It's mostly Penelope in here".

(granted I have not really...looked too much recently as it started making me sad to think about her not getting a lot of love) I am also very picky. I won't stand for cardboard Penelope who is only there to prop up her husband and/or thinks he "cheated" or have Odysseus cheat. Penelope, and women in general, are not props for their husbands/sons.)

As like, I got most of my info FROM the Odyssey AND just simply looking stuff up about her and Sparta and her family. And so I get this lil feeling of "...We both read the same book, why did it take me pointing out that Penelope is constantly wishing violence on the suitors for people to know that she does that? Why did you think that Penelope didn't come up with the archery contest when it explicitly says she did?"

And it's not like, even a feeling of "gatekeeping" or wanting to be like "You're a Penelope fan, huh? Well then tell me the names of all her possible brothers? >:(" It's more like a

As like...I dunno. When you love a character, you wanna meet others who also will ramble nonstop about them too, you know?

I sometimes feel like, idk, some folks are like "Think up Penelope headcanons for us! :D " especially as like... I've had that whole "Oh no, I've got all I need!" experience more than once :')

Ngl, like, part of the reason I go so "apeshit" about her is yeah, because I am, but also like, in hope more people will join me? Which yeah! People have! And that makes me happy!

But even then, I just... I DO like this joke, don't get me wrong, but with how whenever I fangirl about her, people are like, "Found Odysseus" and yippee! :D I think it's fun to be called Odysseus!

But also like...Why does it still tie back to him? Why is it still about Odysseus? (even my own tag of "Shot by Odysseus" is still technically about him! (I'm keeping it because I'm stupid but still)) Why aren't Odysseus fans called "Penelope" then? She loves him just as much, right?

I think there's more "OdyPen fans" than there are Penelope fans. Because most Penelope stuff HAS to do with Odysseus, and it's usually like, STILL centered around him. Which is really weird to me, as I don't know how you can be a big Odysseus fan without being an equally big Penelope fan. They are way way too intertwined to not be equally talked/headcanoned/etc. about in my opinion. They're like the same person imo in a way lol.

In my opinion, you cannot bring up Odysseus without mentioning Penelope, you cannot bring up Penelope without mentioning Odysseus.

It's literally like that in the Odyssey. (Explain that part of Homer's passage here.)

...So why are there so many fics with Odysseus doing so much without Penelope, and yet, very few Penelope fics that don't have much of anything to do with Odysseus?

And like...I'm a goober just like every other fan, you know? I'm not some "mastermind". All my "good" headcanons are simply loving her and thinking about her often. It's...not hard to love a character. I just rotate her around a lot. :3

are they implying that she's only "meaningful" because she's related to ed? because...yikes dog. sarah serves a pretty similar role to the kankers in that she foils the scams and pranks and acts as an obstacle and/or deterrent. an antagonist. but the way they fulfill the role and the reaction they get from the eds are different in ways that i'm too lazy to get into at the moment.

now i could genuinely be missing something because i've never taken a class on media analysis or whatever the fuck, but i truly don't get what people mean when they say nazz is uniquely lacking in personality. i'm not saying eene has excellent, fleshed out female characters, but some people act as if 1) any of the non-eds have highly complex personalities that are explored canonically 2) being kind, outgoing, flirtatious, sporty, etc. aren't personality traits. just because someone doesn't like her personality doesn't mean it doesn't exist. and we know just as much, if not more about nazz's interests than we do the kankers. or jonny: he likes wood, is laid back and seems to enjoy superheroes. or kevin: he likes bmx. he's a bully. he has a crush on nazz. he's buds with rolf, whose backstory we probably know the most about after the eds (maybe even more?). then there's jimmy who lowkey has a great, complex personality.

seems like since nazz is pretty, is into stereotypically "girly" things and is nice, people consider her a "bad" (female) character. which to me is hilarious and ironic. these are the same people who call the kankers "evil". like okay... 😂

this idea that all female characters are supposed to be virtuous geniuses... it's a show about 3 dumbass preteen boys. there are tons of female-led shows available out there, and female main characters galore. these people should go watch em. seriously. im tired of hearing about it frankly.

oh and if edd was canonically a girl, people would hate her and call her a mary sue 👍

About the Take Me to Church soundcheck; I had a couple of lovely people tell me where it was filmed. It was not, in fact, from this most recent tour in North America. It actually wasn't filmed in North America at all, lol.

Since I also had a friend of the owner of the video/audio reach out to me, I won't state exactly when or where it was filmed, but I will tell you all it's about two years old and Vessel most definitely was wearing black nail polish when he was playing that piano.

Also! I found the doors that I was originally looking for. Like, there was absolutely no reason for the Google Maps car to drive 10 meters down a tiny dead-end alleyway but they did and I am eternally grateful to that driver.

First of all, thank you so much anon! Your words really mean a lot to me. Thank you for your honesty too. I know how easy it is to get jealous, but seeing that you're so positive about it is incredibly nice.

I'd love to give you and all aspiring artists a little hope!

I only started growing properly last year, before that I didn't sell many prints, commissions or anything of that matter. I spent a lot of time wondering what I even wanted to do. For the longest time I thought I wanted to get into character design or concept art so I worked towards that, but slowly realized that it's not for me at all. It felt like I was forcing myself into a box I didn't belong in. I started befriending people who worked in the industry and I realized that it's not what I want to do. I felt really lost after that. Nothing was really working out for me.

But then Our Flag Means Death came out and I started creating fanart again. Something that I had somewhat stopped doing, because I believed it wasn't professional enough and that I couldn't get anywhere with it. But I enjoyed it so much and pushed out so much art that I started growing a proper community! And then I just kept drawing what I really wanted to draw, not forcing myself into any box anymore. And because of that, I improved so quickly too. And now I managed to be at a point in my art journey where I'm not that scared of my future anymore.

So please, just keep doing whatever it is you enjoy the most, don't listen to what other people tell you. Be patient with yourself as well, because everyone's journey is different. You can absolutely achieve your dreams! ❤️
