The Doctor stepped into Penguin Logistics’ office with his laptop and a smile. ‘Emperor and Magallan are taking a day for themselves, so they asked me to come watch PL for the day. Shouldn’t be too much trouble, and since Amiya’s in charge while I’m doing this, I don’t have to worry about doing any actual work, either! I’ll just get to sit back, relax, and-’

“Incoming!” A rubber band pegged him in the knee with enough force to send him to the floor, albeit leaving him enough sense of self not to fall onto his computer or let it break in the process. “Oh, Leader! Sorry, I thought you were the Emp!” Exusiai walked over and helped him up.

“He’s taking the day off and asked me to fill in for him. How the hell does a rubber band hurt that much?” He asked, rubbing his knee.

Exu waved a strange-looking not-gun at him. “The Emperor’s nonlethal gun - in his words, ‘still good for cappin’ fools if ya know where to hit ‘im.’ Want me to show you around?”

“Exu, tell Emperor we’ve gotta go!” Sora dashed out from an out-of-sight room. “There’s a- Oh, hi, Doctor!”

“The Leader’s our Leader for today. Looks like you’re coming with us!” The way she said it didn’t really comfort him...but it was just a mission, right? How bad could it be?

A few hours later, the Doctor was in the backseat of a black van, applying healing Arts to Croissant as Texas drove them down a highway and Bison and Exusiai acted as a turret+shielding duo through the sunroof. Sora looked back at them from the front seat. “Sorry, Doctor! We didn’t think they’d be so well-armed, or have so many cars.”

“It’s fine,” he lied bold-faced, focused on the work at hand. “You guys do this on a daily basis without a trained Medic?”

“We all know enough to keep on our feet,” Texas replied, making a sharp turn that smacked Croissant’s head into the door behind her.

The Doctor cursed under his breath. “She’s going to be out for a few. Exu, Bison, need any help?”

“Doing just fine, Leader!” The Sankta replied before firing shredding one of their pursuer’s tires. “Sit back and enjoy the view!”

“...I’m gonna try something.” He rolled down the window nearest to him and stuck the end of his staff out of it; concentrating on the ground they’d already rolled over, he pulled up on it, and metal spikes were now growing as their van’s tires drove on. Less than a mile later, and they were scott-free.

Bison and Exusiai made their way back into the car, the former sitting in the floor and cradling Croissant while the latter took a seat in the Doctor’s lap, hugging him. “That was so cool, Leader! Emperor would have just kept telling Texas to drive around until we lost them, but you solved that much more quickly!”

“I just wanna go home,” he muttered, “but thanks...”

“Well, we’ve got what we came here for, so mission accomplished! Let’s go home.”

Croissant was awake by the time they made it back, and she immediately declared that they should celebrate their first Doctor-led job being a success. Everyone agreed, and so they celebrated in their usual way - a party.

A few more hours later, and the Doctor was sequestered in a back room, staring at the ceiling. He had a terrible stomach for alcohol, and after two beers, he’d left to detox. Now, thoroughly drained from the Arts use and the party-induced purge, he was just waiting for the day to end so he could go back to his office.

“Leader?” Exusiai knocked gently on the door. “I don’t know if you’re hungry, but I brought you something. Can I come in?”

“Is it apple pie?” He called back.

She giggled. “No, it’s not pie.”

“Alright,” he replied; Exu had, in fact, brought him some water and a bowl of applesauce, which she set down in front of him. “Well, you didn’t say it wasn’t apples...Thank you, Exu.”

“Don’t mention it. You wouldn’t mind if I stuck around for a bit, would you?”

The Doctor blinked. “No, but...why?”

“I just want to make sure you’re okay.” She sat down across from him as he sat up to eat, smiling. “Why don’t you go out in the field more, Leader? You did a great job with us today.”

“I’m too valuable to RI to risk on normal ops, and I like my peace and quiet...although it was nice being able to help you guys today.”

Exusiai watched him for a while, not saying anything, before piping up again. “What did you want to do today while you were here?”

“I’ve got a game I’ve been trying to finish for a while,” he admitted. “It’s hard to find the time normally.”

“What game?” She looked over at his laptop curiously.

The Doctor smiled. “Soul Mirage 3. Hand me my laptop and I can show you.”

“Sure!” She hopped up and brought him his computer, sitting on the other side from his food and closer. As he booted up the machine, she shivered. “Did you turn on the AC?”

“A while ago, yeah; I was sweating like a Siesta slug for a minute there.”

Exusiai glanced up at the vents. “Can I turn it off again?”

“Here.” He double-checked there wasn’t anything on his jacket before handing it to her. “I’m not going to need it.”

“Thanks!...Hehe.”

The Doctor had only just gotten through the login screen and was watching his programs open in sequence. “What’s funny?”

“Nothing~” When he gave her a sideways glance, he realized it was exactly her size. “It smells like you.”

“Gee, thanks.”

She pouted. “I meant it as a compliment...”

“Really?” The game could wait for a minute; he set aside his computer while it continued setting up. “How is that a compliment?”

“Well, it reminds me of you.”

The Doctor smirked. “And you like thinking of me that much?”

“When I don’t have the real thing so close by...” Exusiai rested a hand on his shoulder. “Do you believe the rumors about Mostima and me, Leader?”

“Rumors?”

She smiled. “That answers that, then...You don’t have a girlfriend or anything, right?”

“No, I don’t.” His attention was all hers right now. “What about it?”

“Do you want one?”

His head began to spin again. “Why are you asking me this now...”

“I heard a lot about you before coming here with Penguin, and getting to work with you has been really fun.” She wiped a stray glob of applesauce off his face with her finger and licked it off. “Before i met you, I kinda worried about tying myself down, but when I’m around you, I just wanna get closer.”

“...I’m gonna start overheating again.”

Exusiai giggled. “I knew I had an effect on you! Earlier in the car, when I sat in your lap, you were too focused on the fight for me to be able to tell.”

“Yeah, there’s nothing to hide behind now, is there.” The Doctor thought for a moment. “If you wanted to know for sure...”

“Don’t mind if I do.” She took off his jacket before taking his offer, settling into his lap and wrapping her arms around him.

Their faces were dangerously close. “Are you still cold?”

“I’m getting warmer,” Exu whispered, “but not that quickly.”

“Well, um...I can help with that.”

Lights danced in her eyes. “I’d like that a lot.”

“I would, too.” He pursed his lips. “Could you take the lead, though? I don’t know what this body’s done before, but this is my first time...”

“Just relax, Doctor, and leave everything to me.”

And that’s exactly what he did.

OP this is so valid!!!!! I recently went through a period like this where I just didn't draw because I was like "I'm not making any progress". and that's totally normal! art is hard and looking at your own art and seeing its flaws is so difficult :(((

I'm starting to enjoy doing art again and what helped me was what i call quick comics. right before bed i sit down and i try to draw as many panels of a fancomic as i possibly can, for about 30 minutes.

and they're so. they're so goofy. because i only have 30 minutes i just draw the absolute worst stuff on the face of the planet, but it doesn't matter! because i did a thing!! i did a thing and it was expected to look not perfect but i did a thing!!!

I think sometimes it's important to sit there and be like "im gonna make art!!! and im not gonna perseverate on it!!! and no one gets to tell me it's shit art because it's my art and im okay with it if it's not perfect art because im drawing and im happy!!!!"

I'm also considering doing a drawing every night because I’m a slow drawer, so i won’t have time to worry about quality!!!

other things that worked:

drawing with highlighters and other low-quality materials

following tutorials to make something that took time but not all the brainpower on the face of the planet

doing studies and just knowing that it takes time for the stuff i see to translate to paper (which it did the other day and i was blown away, but it took literal months)

posting bad art and refusing to let myself apologize for it! this one is huge because if you post your art with the tag "it's not great but" or "this is so bad" you'll continue to have that mindset irl

Anyways sorry for that long unsolicited pep talk 😅

also started reading silver spoon & it turns out the things i hated in the 1st ep of the anime didnt even happen in the manga who fuckin knew (im sorry i doubted u arakawa) so im actually enjoying the series a lot more this second time around! though that’s probably partly because i got rly attached to the protag halfway through s2 & now i get to dig out all the little signs of his low sense of self-worth on the reread so like. im having fun lol (watching him react to being told about livestock being offed for under-performing just the smallest bit again is..... so good.......)

watched all of aggretsuko today, like the original 100 shorts & the new series, it was p good! i honestly never planned to watch it bc like. i hate death metal / screaming bc it gives me anxiety & i knew this show would aggravate that but idk i heard good things about it from literally everywhere so i was like w/e im in the mood today i’ll just try it out & i blasted through it and enjoyed it v much

i think i like the shorts better than the show but that might be bc i watched the shorts first & got used to their rhythm? but at the same time i feel like the concept generally works better as little 1-minute tidbits. the show is a bit awkward sometimes in comparison but it’s a v good adaption regardless. it was interesting to see the concept executed 2 different ways at least. v fun show!

mmmmm still working on my silan portrait kind of!! i took a break for 2 days because 1. depression and 2. i was a fucking fool and played a Lot of piano on thursday so that put me out of physical commission for 2 days (honestly i was still feeling it today but i rly wanted to get back to work before it started to fade into yet another unfinished project). so yeah i got back to work on it today, and made some decent progress i think!

i mentioned in my other post that im working in clip studio paint, a program im not used to painting in, and i’ve definitely been struggling trying to get used to all these weird brushes but i think im slowly coming to an understanding and finding a technique that works for me? there’s an “oil paint” brush that’s good for blending & previously i was trying to use only that, since in photoshop i never switched to other brushes, i only used the one (hard round). the oil paint brush being a blending brush though, it’s basically impossible to lay down any new color on top of the old ones because the new color automatically blends with the old ones instead of coming out pure, so as a result all of my shading was coming out super soft and light which is not the effect i’m going for

so i found that using a different brush to lay down color first and then going in with the oil to blend made a huge difference & i was finally able to get in the darker shadows i wanted, but there was still the problem of details because like. the oil brush blends rly soft and it makes everything look kind of fuzzy, and it’s especially hard to deal with small areas for details

so today i started experimenting with a “watercolor” brush, which is basically just a normal brush with low opacity, and i’ve found it’s a good kind of middle ground between blending and carving in details, so that gave me a lot more control and is probably the closest i’ve gotten to my old painting style when i was working in photoshop

this whole process has just been rly confusing & im sure there are easier ways to go about this but i know i’ll get the hang of it eventually & get some good use out of this program, & it’s good to experiment with new tools i guess so?? it’s all good?? i’ll be honest im getting tired & this topic is kind of getting away from me uhhhh in conclusion im still working on the thing & i dont know when i’ll be done but i’m gonna fuckin. Keep at it

back to aggretsuko for a sec, something i rly noticed was the ost is?? really good????? i wanted to listen to it while i drew but i couldnt find it on yt & that’s like the extent of my music search capabilities on the internet so im p sad abt that bc that was like my fave part of the show rip

instead i listened to houseki no kuni’s ost which is fuckin beautiful ugh i finished that show a few weeks ago & it was very very gorgeous, like. weird and disjointed and a little tangential but fuck if it’s not put together in such an artful way that i can forgive all of that like what a way to create an atmosphere what a way to adapt a fuckin manga?? i tried reading the manga a bit bc lets be honest that anime ending was super unsatisfying but it just?? wasnt the same??? theres something abt the show being a 3d show and having the music to accompany its visuals & the way they did the lunarians especially holy fuck, it’s a completely different experience watching the show vs reading the manga & now im sad bc i want a s2 rly rly bad,,,;;;

anyway i didnt mean to talk abt hnk so much lol uh. i ended up listening to the op a thousand times bc god when i say the music for this show is rly good i mean it, both the op & ed are fuckin great (speaking of the ed that gorgeous animation holy shit,) along with its super atmospheric bgm just. god
