gintama was healing to me because its nature has a comedy show that breaks the 4th wall all the time is that it helps you take a distance. like don't get me wrong gintama can be deep and serious but it's also so very unserious in a way that doesn't make the serious parts less impactful it's just yeah listen life is stupid and absurd like that and people are full of wounds but overall we all act very silly. it humbles itself all the time in a way that i found very pleasing...When I love something I tend to dig deeper and deeper and it can be hard for me to take a distance the more i'm emotionally invested. And then you have gintama that constantly switch between 20 episodes of the characters doing shits together and serious arcs with character deaths and brain rewiring level of drama and angst. And even in these serious arcs there is an effective mix of comedy and seriousness that makes it undoubtly gintama (I think that's why I have issues with farewell shinsengumi tbh it takes itself too seriously to my taste...among other things but that's another discussion).
When Gintoki reveals his wooden sword has nothing special at all and that he threw away the notebook of his dead teacher bc he spilled ramen on it, and when the characters make fun of takasugi's emo image behind his back, and when we finally get a joui4 reunion and you expect tragic reminiscences of a lost war and camaraderie but it's actually so stupid you even wonder if it's real. The war was definitely a traumatizing experience and we see that as well, but what matters most is what the characters choose to remember, and how they live day by day in the present.
And I still love trying to fill the blanks and thinking about the characters' past and what made them who they are today but it's all very personal in the end. i will make my assumptions based on vibes and what i choose to take seriously or not. it's like the cat of shrödinger(sorry) but like 'is gintama deep or not' and you never know for sure and it doesnt matter in the end and it's fun. And something Gintama is very serious about is that there is so much love in the comedy and the fun.

For the character asks-
Literally anything about bansai? He's my favorite gintama character =]
Yay finally someone asked!!
Sexuality Headcanon: Shinsuke-sexual AHEM. He's definitely mlm to me and... I think he could be bi? I also like the idea that he's ace
Gender Headcanon: a cis guy open to crossdressing
A ship I have with said character: Bantaka my lifeblood. Romantic or queerplatonic, Bansai and Shinsuke just make the best life partners to me, having kept each other company for ten years and built something (kiheitai 2.0) together between them. They'd indulge in your good o' fashioned sappy romance tropes, like running away together and dying for each other a la Romeo and Juliet, whether they're 17 or 70. In my version of happy ending for them, I think eventually they'd put their arms away, settle down and attempt to live a peaceful life in Edo/Tokyo.
A BROTP I have with said character: with Matako or Shinpachi! I'd love to see more of Matako being the one to question Shinsuke's methods while Bansai being like "but it's Shinsuke. I love him and I trust him unconditionally" like the way they are in odds or evens.
Shinpachi would be so thrilled by the eventual Tsunpo reveal and he would ask Bansai to sign every last piece of Otsuu paraphernalia he owns
A NOTP I have with said character: I don't ship BanMata.
A random headcanon: Bansai being autistic and his headphones and shades being accommodations Shinsuke helped him acquired is a hill I would die on. I also headcanon that during his time as a hitokiri, he would help out joui patriots and their families as much as he could by going after corrupt bakufu officials and landlords who terrorized and persecuted them.
General Opinion over said character: He's so underrated. Why are there so little art of him. Why did they waste his potential. Seriously, this guy gets deliberately written out of action all the time. And all this implication that he's a mysterious character with major things about him that remains untold got slam dunked into the wastebin after sorachi killed him for no good reason.
(would really love to see bansai have fun with the rest of joui 4. shinsuke gets jealous, but he can't stay green anymore after they invited him as well)

2023 ádvent tizedik söre
Tumblr media
Maisel & Friends: Hopfen Reiter #8 - Double IPA

Episode #32: Link Up | Wellington Brewery with Karyn Boscariol
The penultimate week in Link Up's Series 6 brings us back to Ontario with one of the most legendary breweries in the province - Wellington Brewery! Karyn joined Tiff and Cee to chat about their pioneering work with Queen of Craft and creating more gender equality in craft beer, the demographic changes they've seen over the years as a result of their efforts, how they try to make craft beer more accessible and approachable to more people, and where she sees beer going from here. They cracked open Welly's Link Up American Pale Ale, at 5.4% it rocks Sorachi Ace, Sasquatch, Topaz and Amarillo in the boil, and it's hazy, tropical, crushable and citrusy. Cheers!
  About the Link Up season:
We're back with a brand new season of BAOS Podcast, and this one is something very special and very close to us. We'll be focusing this entire season on Link Up, a non-profit started by the good folks behind Microbrasserie 5e Baron in Aylmer, QC and Tiffany and Cee here at BAOS and High Season Co. Our aim with this program is to help BIPOC from underrepresented communities learn about and enter the craft beer industry in essentially any area they wish - from a brewing apprentice to taking the Cicerone course for front-of-house opportunities, from hop farming to the yeast lab, from beer media to design and photography, we're here to help diversify an industry that is in dire need of it.

Saucy Brew Works, Sandusky OH
17 June 2023
I stopped at the Saucy Brew Works in Cleveland a couple of years ago. Sandusky seemed like a good stopping place this year and since I'd been to Small City Taphouse on my last visit, I decided to try the new Saucy Brew Works here. (Spoiler: I'll definitely do Small City if I come this way again.)
Although you can't see from this photo, Saucy is right near the water of Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie and I imagine they do a huge business in the summer; there's an outside area in addition to a lot more inside space than I show here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since I arrived shortly after 2pm and didn't want to sit outdoors, I figured I'd do the "seat yourself at the bar or a high-top table" option; since a high-top would require ordering at the bar anyway, I sat at the bar. And sat. And waited. And sat. And waited. The bartender -- who turned out to be quite nice even though not quite on top of things -- noticed me right away and said she'd be right with me, but her sense of time and mine must have been quite different.
Eventually, I was able to order a flight (and food ... although she forgot what I ordered and came back about ten minutes later to ask what I'd wanted):
Tumblr media
All of these beers were decent, but they all reminded me of new wine -- somewhat rough around the edges. The descriptions run left-to-right on the top row, then the same for the bottom row.
Separate Czechs (4.1% Czech Pilsner) - This was very acceptable, quite pleasant, and good on a hot day.
Up the Hill (4.9% Munich Helles lager) - I actually liked this the best of the six and ordered a pint of it later (which was an odd experience in itself ... but more on that after a bit).
Swing Juice 2023 (4.9% Kölsch) - I love a good Kölsch, and while this was tasty, it wasn't what I was expecting from this style. I briefly considered doing this as the pint but thought better of it the more of the flight glass I drank. It just wasn't right for today.
Kado (4.1% Japanese style lager) - This is brewed with toasted rice and Japanese Sorachi Ace hops and I was worried that the rice might be too much, but it wasn't. In the end, this was a very close second to the Helles for a pint.
Juicy Asap ( 6.5% American IPA) - It was a beautiful color -- as were many of these -- and I did like it, but not enough to repeat. They say this is their best-selling IPA and I can see why that is, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for today.
Electric Lettuce (7.5% American IPA) - I love the name, but of the two IPAs, I'd take the first. I can't even quite say why, but this one just didn't make the cut in some way. Perhaps it was the wild mix of fruit flavors?
Tumblr media
Even though I'd planned to get something else, I ended up ordering the exact same meal I'd had at their Cleveland location, the pepperoni pizza, and it was even better here. That crust is thin and crispy, just the way I like it, and I love that it's the perfect size for a meal. No bloated feeling after!
Finally, there was the pint of Helles:
Tumblr media
I don't know, maybe she thought I wanted it to go? Is that even a thing here? At any rate, I took the sippy cup lid off and drank it straight out of the plastic "glass."
So, having tried Saucy Works in two different locations ... they're not a bad choice, but far from what I've come to expect on these drives. I'll give them a miss in the future unless I'm out of choices.

Episode #29: Link Up | Sawdust City Brewery with Sam Corbeil
Link Up Series 6 is in the building! We're kicking off the latest collaboration series with a brewery that's super close to our hearts - Sawdust City! Co-Founder Sam Corbeil joins Cee and Tiff to chat about the importance of ties to the community in a region like Muskoka, why they offer such a wide variety of styles, their approach to "gateway beer" and how that offers access to many communities, how the younger generation is approaching beer, and the effects of pricing of beer. Sawdust delivered their Lemongrass Rice Lager with Sabro and Sorachi Ace hops, a bright, crisp, citrusy gem with awesome tropical vibes from the coconut that couldn't be more perfect for the patio. Plus there's a sneak peak of Sawdust and BAOS's newest collab beer, Get It In Y'a V2.0. Cheers!
