Arc 19, Reflections

Okay, so, Arc 19 > Arc 18, hands down. Not much better, in toto, since it still ran on idiot balls, contrivances and still centered on Echidna.

In terms of important stuff that happens, there's some reveals about Tattletale, good shit there. The portal, sure. And the reveal about Cauldron.

Couldn't we have had them without Echidna, the big stompy plot device with the cheat powers bag?

I'm not normally one to say 'quit talking, get to the action' about my fiction, and I get that the characters doing the talking were ones who couldn't necessarily do much about Echidna directly, but jesus christ the conversations that were being had while this giant monster is rampaging a block over got incredibly annoying, very quickly.

And fine, in 19.7 Tats explains it was her trying to find a new purpose, but I feel like 'survive the BIG STOMPY MONSTER THAT WANTS TO EAT YOU' is a good purpose for the short term, Tats. You don't need to focus on aggravating everyone about Cauldron and the Portal. I mean, hey, maybe if you hadn't kept talking about Cauldron, clone-Eidolon wouldn't have brought it up!

(Unlikely, granted, but still)

and then it brings us back to Echidna. Which again, was way too much focus on these guys. And she's just surviving everything that's throne at her, while also being huge and powerful on her own AND she makes evil clones!

And then, magically, somehow, the second Sundancer gets into the game, that's all it takes? The bitch survives EVERYTHING else everyone threw at her, but Sundancer kills her like that? *snap*?

Like, yes, Sundancer has an insanely powerful power. But still. Legends beams are supposed to be powerful. Eidolon is fucking Eidolon. Alexandria is Alexandria. And they were bringing out a whole bunch of other powerful capes and they couldn't even SCRATCH her?

Now, I'm not saying I don't get why Sundancer was less than willing to do it at first, why she needed time to get around to the idea, but also...

No? Bitch? You could have saved a lot of time and lives if you'd done it sooner.

Also, maybe I just missed it, but it feels like Trickster barely did anything to help Noelle in the fight, which didn't really line up with some of the stuff I'd read before now, but I'll admit I wasn't paying the closest of attention here, since my eyes were glazing over sometimes in the arc.

I'm glad we're finally gone with the Travelers, at least, thank fuck, but still.

I know we're gonna get to Wards!Taylor soon, though we have a few more arcs, and that's great, but what I really need to know, what I'm really desperate to know, is WHY. What did Taylor pick up as a Ward that actually helped the numbers?

Anyway, at least we DO know that the Bay itself is finally in a stable position... for two years. and that's great. But a blind reader... a blind reader is gonna be left waiting for the next shoe to drop on the Bay, right? Because that's all the story has done. Drop shoes on the bay like a centipede coming home from the gym.

I like Worm, I do. I'm bitching a lot, and I definitely didn't really enjoy the last three arcs much, but I hold out hope it will get better. Because there's a lot to like about Worm.

But also, fucking hell Emma is delulu and Sophia is psychotic beyond all belief.

Top 5 FE units (here interpreted to mean “purely in terms of gameplay”)

Seth. It has entertained me for close to 20 years now that in a series that prides itself on how it gives you a wide variety of units and tries to encourage you to come up with a balanced and well built army, one game gives you literally the best unit in the game in the prologue operating at full capacity and capable of soloing the game.

Jill FE10. There’s nothing like being one of the only decent units in a roster of trash to really make an otherwise-good-at-best unit shine.

Lysithea, essentially infinite use warp goes crazy and that’s on top of already arguably being the best combat mage in the game, I hope more games in the future use the Gaiden/Echoes/3h magic systems

Rafiel, dancing four units a turn is an all timer crazy game design choice, what were they thinking etc (even if it’s balanced out by the endgame making you face like 100 units per map)

Maybe an oddball choice but Echidna, as a representative for every other time the games give you prepromotes in the mid-late game and they’re actually competent units that can immediately find a spot in your deployment list

Top 5 female fe units painfully shafted by shit balancing with heavily gendered stat points

Marisa. Eternally cool design, interesting character, statistically inferior in every significant way to Joshua who joins way earlier and in a way more ready to use state. You can’t even cope and say she’s decent as an assassin because luck doesn’t factor into crit rate in fe8.

Sophia. All time Nadir of FE gameplay design. Joins near the end of the fucking game at level one with worse averages than Every other mage so she isn’t even an Est. She’s literally just there to be a liability on the desert map. Holy fuck.

Lyn. Honestly so much of FE7 feels straight disrespectful to her. The bar to clear here was Celica man holy fuck.

Wendy. What if we made an armor unit that had no bulk and did no damage. Maybe the platonic example of “we made her worse than her niche competition because she’s a girl”. Fir is also a good example from 6, maybe a very subdued one in that she’s not terrible or unusable, just mechanically inferior to the male competition in the ways that matter.

Karla. Honestly similarly to Sophia she doesn’t feel like a unit you’re supposed to take seriously at all. I mean, hidden behind bringing a bad unit you won’t use along the whole game and getting him strong enough to face her in an arena but not so strong you’ll kill her, and then she’s worse even than the other pre promote swordmaster you get earlier at higher level for less effort? I guess Karel is technically optional, but still.

I thought of a good chunk of examples from Tellius but most of those were honestly more about how tellius hated a lot of unit types. Micaiah is maybe the series’ least impressive lord but how much of that is that she’s a girl and how much of it is the fact that she’s in a game that fucking hates mages.

you know, it strikes me, that for all her ‘my way or the highway’ attitude, and frustration with others not immediately agreeing with her plans/moral framework- Taylor never asks anyone to do anything that she isn’t going to do herself.

Taylor is not Alexandria- or Cauldron for that matter, even though at a passing glance they share similarities- she’s not willing to let others suffer the shitty parts while she stands aside, smug and with all the cards in her hands. 

She holds everyone to the same standards she holds herself. 

The problem is that the standards she holds herself at are absolutely bum-fuck wild! She fights Lung on her first night out with an incomplete costume, no lethal weaponry, no martial arts or combat training of any kind, with a power that his almost completely counters! But she heard that he was going to kill a bunch of kids! What was she supposed to do?? Run away all call the PRT like and normal fifteen year old????

Sure Coil has a terrifyingly all-knowing thinker power, millions of dollars, an army equipped with tinkertech, and is literally one of the high ups in the PRT- he kidnapped and drugged a child!!! So what if she could do so many important things with the money she gets doing jobs for him, and so what her literal only friends in the world won’t stop working with him and she’ll inevitably snap like a baby carrot if she’s left completely alone without any anchors??? Did you not hear about the part with the drugged child!!!

Yes of course she’s going to an Endbringer fight even though Leviathan no sells her power and her power is bugs and she has like zero allies and also a grown man is trying to kill her during the Truce! And okay yeah of course she’s going to get up close and personal with the creature that can swat Alexandria like a fly and literally just fucked Armsmaster within an inch of his life- that’s just the decent thing to do!

She’ll work with Lung- even though he publicly, loudly, and clearly announces he wants her dead- and she’ll work with Sophia even though yes technically Sophia did kinnndaa bully her into triggering for literal shits and giggles. She’ll help Eidolon out of a tight spot even though she’s pretty sure that he’s literally part of an evil interdimensional cult full of people who have never heard of informed consent- because, well, Echidna! 

Flechette can fuse a literal crossbolt into bone, and Rachel can almost get her captured in the middle of a fight, and Amy can threaten to give her cancer while her spine is broken because she decided to risk her life 1v1ing Leviathan- and okay, she doesn’t love any of that, but she can still work with them- still help them, despite any grievous bodily harm that may or may not have occurred. 

She realizes that the chances are so so slim that she’ll survive the fight with Scion- that any of them will- but she still fights with every last thing she has and then some, because that’s just who the fuck she is. 

And more to the point- it’s who the fuck she wants everyone else to be too.

My personal low-rarity AR investments--

Sophia: Still my dark horse AR recommendation. She has the best statline of the three prf Raven tomes, and prf Ravens are only going to get more valuable with colorless tomes coming.

Boey: He's a better Frobin. Cheapest CC/Vantage mage on account of his refine, and still being able to run an A-skill is great. Also, see above note about Raven tomes.

Virion: Ever felt limited by only having Aversa in one season? Just promote a fucking Virion, bam, that's your Aversa II. Doesn't even need dew, can also run IP if you're big-brained like that. Versatile support slut.

Mamui: Dedicated support slut. If you're running an omegatank, you should be running a Mamui to give them +5 to everything in addition to whatever Drives you can stuff in his C and S. He can do his job with no merges, but his pretty good statline makes him a nice chill soak.

Odin: Stop looking at me like that. When you need a CC mage to eat a TA weapon to bait the enemy out of formation, this is your man. I take him out whenever overlapping ranges are a problem, or dragonkillers.

Eliwood: Literally the best Galeforce cav in the game. Massive dew cost, but special fighter on a horse combined with Speedy Impact is really fucking good.

Libra/Echidna: Very similar statlines, though I think Echidna has fractionally more BST now. Ideal DC units for fucking up that bitch Ophelia. Some people also run Hawkeye for this job and his Lull is definitely nice, but I think his speed is too big of an issue. Also, Gen1 BST.

For anyone who has an FE6 muse or is considering picking one up, I just finished the Hasha no Tsurugi manga and made notes on what canon characters show up in what chapters including villains and minor backstory characters. My full list chapter-by-chapter is under the cut, but I’ll give a warning that if a character literally only showed up for ONE panel, I listed them. There were enough Skills to go around that I could assign two characters to a skill for both the FE6 and FE7 parts of the game, including new characters. The only exceptions were Merlinus, Nils, Ninian, Lalum, and Elphin; as strict utility characters, they didn’t get Skills. Otherwise, it would’ve been Miracle or Bargain for all of them.

I’ll also do a refresher on what each of the skills were and who I would’ve assigned them to. Some of the assignments are very much themed, and some are explicitly for shoring up statistical weaknesses of the character in question.

Armok (Blood)

One who's power and abilities seem to fluctuate based on their player. A powerful god like threat to an army with their player at the help, but paradoxically weak when faced one on one.

Lyssa (Rage)

A seemingly thoughtless beast with an aura of negative energy about them, releasing waves of wrathful energy as they thrash about, sending waves of fear, anger, and sorrow into the world around them.

Metis (Mind)

A quiet, measured beast. Small in comparison to most denizens, but psionic in nature and highly intelligent, able to predict the movements of an enemy and form illusions to distract them.

Yaoldabaoth (Exceptionally powerful players)

The most powerful Denizen. All stats incredibly high, beams fire from their eyes, able to fire in several directions, and able to land one hit kill strikes.
