COV!D WARNING: Because of canon events, there are allusions to the ongoing pandemic in this fic. I am only comfortable writing it because Yoongi was negative. However all of Yoongi's symptoms aligned with the virus, so it's an obvious conclusion to draw. Just a reminder that I do not write any of the members with COV!D. I will acknowledge the world we all live in and realistically represent the way in which we should navigate this new normal. Yoongi wakes up the morning of the 13th with a sore throat. He thinks nothing of it at first. Maybe he just recorded too much the previous day. His new tracks feature a much more raw voice, putting much more strain on his throat. So feeling a little sore is not uncommon. He carries on with his morning. He brews himself some green tea to soothe the pain and sips it leisurely. 

Yoongi blocked the day off to prepare for Hoseok’s debut party. He goes through his wardrobe, trying to pick what would be best for the album release party. He’s been excited about the party since Hoseok invited him. If Hoseok is throwing it, he knows it will be the party of the year. And he wants to make a good impression. 

He hasn’t listened to Hoseok’s album yet, out of principle. He’s been wanting to wait until the official release. But because of it, he has no idea what vibe to go with. Knowing Hoseok, a hip-hop vibe would be appropriate. Even with that in mind, he lays out a couple outfits on his bed and snaps pictures. He immediately texts them to Hoseok for feedback.  

Hoseok replies quickly despite how busy he must be. Organizing the party, filming his promotions, rehearsing for his upcoming stage. He still makes time for the members. Hoseok picks one of the outfits the older rapper sent him, remarking that Yoongi will kill at the party. He even commends Yoongi for being so proactive. 

Yoongi carries on the conversation. He goes on to tell Hoseok how he was going to get his makeup done for the party, which Hoseok laughs about. And he constantly praises Hoseok for his efforts and how excited he was to support him. 

Hoseok goes on and on about everything he's planning and all the fellow stars he's invited to the party. Yoongi's never met most of them. It only makes him more excited, the ability to form potential collaborations with new artists. Parties are all about networking. And supporting Hoseok, of course. 

But really, Yoongi is Hoseok’s biggest supporter. He could not be more proud of his fellow rapper. When they started discussing their solo debuts, Hoseok volunteered to go first. It must have taken a lot of guts to go first. Having no reference for how things would go, putting himself on the line like this. At least the rest of them can learn and coordinate their own debuts by learning from Hoseok. The dance leader went into it alone, operating through sheer trial and error. Yoongi is so impressed.

As the day progresses, Yoongi picks up a dry cough. It becomes an unmanageable tickle in the back of his throat that doesn’t quit. It serves to further irritate that sore throat he couldn’t quite kick in the morning. But he just drinks more tea in hopes that it will help. 

The sore throat and cough worsen overnight. Yoongi wakes the morning of the party in a cold sweat. He aches everywhere. He feels a chill despite being buried under his comforter and snuggled up with Holly. His throat is still sore, burning worse than yesterday. And the grating cough doesn’t help at all. He overlooked it, but now he's concerned.

He forces himself out of bed and to the bathroom. He thinks he keeps his thermometer in there. He's already assumed he’s running a fever. And when it beeps, he confirms and glares down at the blinking 39.2. 

He thinks about all of the symptoms and swallows a lump in his throat, painfully of course. He knows what it looks like. And he’s not happy about it. 

The first thing he does is schedule a test. The second thing he does is create a group text with Seokjin, Namjoon, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook. 

Yoongi: 

I don’t think I can go to Hoseok’s party tonight.

Namjoon: 

Why can’t you go?

Taehyung: 

Hyung, you have to be there! 

Seokjin: 

Yoongi-yah. You better not be putting work over Hoseok’s debut. He needs our support. 

Yoongi: 

Hyung, no. Of course not.

I woke up with a fever. And a sore throat. And a cough.

The group chat is eerily silent for several minutes until Jungkook replies, 

Jungkook: 

Are you getting tested?

Yoongi:

I scheduled one. But the earliest appointment is tomorrow morning.

Namjoon: 

Were you exposed? 

Yoongi: 

I don’t think so. 

Seokjin: 

Still, you should air on the side of caution. If you’re having symptoms, you shouldn’t go.

Namjoon:

I agree with Jin-hyung. We don’t want to turn Hobi’s party into a superspreader event. 

Yoongi: 

What do I tell Hoseok?

He’s so excited. We were just talking about it yesterday.

Jimin: 

You tell him the truth, hyung.

You didn’t mean to get sick. It just happened.

Jungkook:

Hobi-hyung will understand why you can’t be there.

Yoongi:

Do you think he’ll be upset?

Seokjin: 

Probably. But like Jungkookie said, he’ll understand.

Yoongi: 

I really wanted to be there to support him.

Seokjin: 

You’ll just have to support him extra hard in other ways.

While you’re resting, of course.

Jungkook:

He’ll forgive you.

Namjoon:

We all love you hyung.

Jimin: 

Take care of yourself. Hope you feel better, hyung.

Taehyung: 

We’ll send you pics and videos from the party!

Seokjin:

Now go talk to Hoseok.

Yoongi closes the chat and feels the support of the other members behind him. 

But he still drafts the text to Hoseok about 50 times. He doesn’t know how to go about telling him. He doesn’t want Hoseok to think he’s bailing at the last minute, or faking an illness just to get out of it. He really was excited and he hopes that Hoseok knows that. 

He deleted all the character’s he wrote. He sticks the thermometer back in his mouth to just take his temperature again. He snaps a photo of the reading and sends it to Hoseok. The number would speak for itself.

Yoongi sends the photo, sans caption. Before he even has time to put his phone down, it blasts with the annoyingly peppy tone he has set as Hoseok’s contact tone. That was quick. He takes a deep breath and answers on the fourth ring. 

“Hob-ah,” His voice is croaky, only helping his case. 

“Hyung, are you okay!? Your fever’s pretty high. Do you need to go to the doctor? Have you taken medicine?” Hoseok rattles off with concern.

“I’ll be okay,” He coughs, turned away from the phone receiver, “I haven’t taken anything yet. I just woke up not too long ago. But I didn’t have a fever yesterday. Too soon to tell if I need a doctor.” 

“Are you having any other symptoms?” He asks. 

“I’ve had a sore throat. And a cough that started yesterday. Now a fever.”

“Hyung, that sounds like-” 

“Don’t say it. I know what it sounds like.” Yoongi’s quick to cut the dancer off, like the word alone is traumatizing enough. “I have a test scheduled for tomorrow morning.” 

“Tomorrow morning…” Hoseok’s voice deflates. Yoongi thinks everything just now clicked for Hoseok. Including why Yoongi had randomly texted him. Fevers are something they are all used to, stress fevers specifically. They don’t usually share every fever with each other. “That means… you’re isolating, right?” 

Yoongi nods, but he remembers Hoseok can’t see him and answers verbally. “Yeah. I don’t want to risk exposing anyone, if that’s what it is.” He comments.

“Of course not,” There’s a clear sadness in Hoseok’s voice, but he’s trying to push through it. Yoongi’s heart cracks knowing he’s the cause. 

“I’m so sorry, Hob-ah.” Yoongi apologizes. His voice is going, and he’s tired. He’s not sure how much longer he can carry on this conversation. “I really wanted to go to your party.” 

“Don’t apologize, hyung.” Hoseok is really trying to mask his disappointment. He wants Yoongi there most of all, knowing he hadn’t shared any of the tracks with the older rapper. He knew that Yoongi put thought and planning into attending. He knew it wouldn’t feel right without all of his members there to support him. But much like everything they’ve experienced in the last few years, nothing ever goes the way they want it to. “You can’t help that you got sick.”

“But you worked so hard-” 

“Yoongi-hyung,” Hoseok interrupts. He doesn’t want Yoongi to feel guilty. “I’m sorry you’re not feeling well. I know you’d come if you could. But we both know it’s best that you stay at home.”

“You’re not mad, are you?” Yoongi’s voice is small, fearful. 

“Of course not.” Hoseok assures, “I’m disappointed you won’t be there tonight. It won’t be the same without you. But you need to prioritize your health.” Yoongi can hear the fondness in Hoseok’s voice. “So take some medicine, maybe a shower, and get some rest.” 

“Thanks, Hob-ah.” Yoongi’s voice cracks, a sign it’s nearly. He tries to clear it, just to buy more time. 

“Feel better, hyung.” Hoseok can tell Yoongi’s losing his voice. He wraps up the call, “I’ll miss you.” 

“Enjoy the party. I’ll be waiting for pics.” It’s the last of his voice, the end of the sentence is nothing but a raspy whisper. He hangs up the phone, feeling much more at ease than he had previously. He takes care of himself, like he promised everyone that he would. 

Yoongi sleeps most of the day away, trying to fight off the miserable symptoms. It’s a routine of naps and tea and fruit and naps and medicine and tea. While he’s taking his evening dose of fever reducers, he hears a knock on the door. He slips on a mask and goes to answer it. There’s no one there. Only a teal and black checkered box sitting on his stoop. Even his fevered mind recognizes the pattern immediately. 

With a chuckle and a headshake, he brings the box inside. The words “Jack In The Box” are inscribed on every side of the box and Yoongi wonders how Hoseok had time to arrange for this despite how busy he surely was with everything else. 

He opens the box and finds a small taste of the release party inside. The checkered pattern covers all the merchandise, obvious gifts he’s arranged for his guests. There’s snacks and tiny bottles of alcohol. There’s a mood lamp he assumes will turn his living room into a pink and teal strobe show. But there’s also a pouch of tangerines and a bottle of fever reducers and throat spray and cough drops. He also finds a box of licorice root tea that Yoongi knows is not easy to find. Along with all of it, there’s a handwritten note: 

It’s not a real party without my SUGA-hyung. Please celebrate with us. ♡ Jack

Yoongi smiles, helping himself to the tangerines and graciously uses the throat spray. He sucks on a cough drop while setting up the mood lamp. When he finishes his tea, he falls asleep to the vibrant neons bouncing around his walls, thinking about how proud he is of his dongsaeng.

Q: thoughts on sope?

A: SOULMATES!!! sope get along SO naturally and beautifully in canon that i actually have a difficult time even imagining fic for them because where is the tension when they understand each other THAT well!!!! (i'm WORKING ON IT THOUGH okay) there are a few relationships (platonic or otherwise) i've had in my life where i can't even explain WHY i get along so well with that person, i just know that there's some kind of instant vibe in the way we communicate that makes me feel Known and Understood and Safe, and i see that same thing in sope! that same weird energy exchange, that talking-without-talking thing, that "this is my person" thing :( like, LITERALLY one week after they met, yoongi called hobi on new year's eve to check on him and hobi was like "i'm fine, i'm just a little bored in the dorm by myself" and somehow yoongi, over the phone, having met him A WEEK AGO, KNEW he WASN'T FINE and decided he had to travel all the way back from home to bring him fried chicken what the FUCK kind of bullshit is that!!!! SOULMATE BULLSHIT, THAT'S WHAT!!! i love that yoongi is the ONLY bangtan that i think has the power to consistently get hobi flustered over absolutely NOTHING (see "omg when yoongi hyung flirts my heart flutters," their sope breakup prank vlive where hobi kept glancing at yoongi to make sure he's doing the joke right, yoongi calling out when hobi's lying and hobi getting all blush-y, etc!) and i also love how he seems to be the only one who hobi will allow to take care of him without protest. he used to take hobi to the hospital for his stress ulcers and he talks a lot abt how fragile hobi is and how easily stressed he is and he goddamn BROUGHT HIM FRIED CHICKEN BC HE WAS WORRIED ABT HOW HE WAS SETTLING IN and he used to let hobi sit in the corner and watch him while he produced music so he could learn how to use the software and i just!!!!! have a LOT OF FEELINGS!!!!! ABOUT SOPE!!!!! and how hobi seems to leave yoongi alone most of the time, like their contact with each other seems SO naturally and instinctively tailored to the other's mood, they have so many different dynamics they enact with each other, like sometimes they're just quiet and sit there holding feet and sometimes they flirt and bother each other and sometimes they get all hyper when yoongi needs energy and they each think the other one is the goddamn FUNNIEST PERSON IN THE WHOLE WORLD and!!!! they love each other SO MUCH that i really don't know what to do with it, like WHERE DO I PUT THAT!!!!

anniversary ff!

hi everyone! i missed my yearly milestone by a month because i was too busy with life to make note of it. i joined tumblr end of march/early april 2020 when the lockdowns became real and i was struggling with feeling lonely and isolated. i remember MOTS:7 had come out and i didnt feel like i had anyone to talk to about it and decided to hop back on tumblr to meet people who loved bts.

The days are longer now. The first snow of the season has already fallen, covering every single surface in the vicinity in pure white - the same color Yoongi wore in a band around his arm that day a long time ago. Or was it just earlier today? Or yesterday? Time seems to run fast yet stand still all at once. Days blend into afternoons into evenings into nights into dawn and into days again, nature’s never ending cycle blurring his notion of how much time has passed. He is vaguely aware that it’s been quite some years, technology changing and evolving around him.

Sometimes the creatures in the forest hear his mourning cries and leave their sympathies, small offerings and tokens to try and appease the fox spirit inside of him, but it is of no use. He remembers his brothers used to ask him about a mate once each found their own. They said his day would come, that mating was an indescribable feeling and there was nothing like it. Then Yoongi found out. And then he lost it.

Hoseok came into his life on a day of first snow at their University, rushing from one class to another. He ran into Yoongi, making both of them drop their books, and upon that first look Yoongi felt the tug in his heart screaming at him to cherish, protect, and love. At first he thought he was mistaken, that his fox was mistaken. Hoseok was a human, how could that be? All of his brothers’ mates were like them, mating with a human was unheard of. But those heart-shaped lips smiled so wide Yoongi didn’t stand a chance.

He also didn’t stand a chance in saying a proper goodbye.

The first time the record didn’t want to play he felt like his heart was being scratched alongside the disc, pulled out again, left to bleed out. He needed to hear their song, needed to feel like Hoseok was still with him, was still in his arms, pulling him to dance in the middle of their one-bedroom-slash-living-room apartment. Even if he was already tired from dance practice and teaching, he still managed to tug Yoongi to share his last dance before bed. “I always want my last dance of the day to be with you,” Hoseok had said. Except for that day.

He went out to buy some new equipment that same day, trying to salvage the record, and instead he came back with a mobile phone and a new account filled with their favorite songs available with just a touch of a finger. Now he just opens the app and chooses their playlist, the same song playing over and over again on repeat without a chance of scratching now.

Hoseok had always been human, too human with his injuries, sprained ankles, and sore muscles that didn’t heal for days. Every day Yoongi was reminded of Hoseok’s fragility, of his humanity. Hoseok was kind and caring. He brought out a brighter side in Yoongi. For example, Yoongi never thought he’d like pet names. Yet there he was calling Hoseok Hobi and Hope, and Hoseok calling him Suga. Yoongi’s brothers and Hoseok’s friends - then Yoongi’s friends too - jokingly called them Sope, a portmanteau of their names expressing how attached and in love they were. Or are. His love has never gone away or diminished, it is there, just lonelier now.

Whenever Hoseok left the dance studio late at night, Yoongi waited, dinner and a bath ready. And that night he waited. And waited.

And waited.

And waits.

When he showers now he never lingers more than necessary in front of the mirror. He also tries to avoid touching the spot as much as he can, that one spot Hoseok chose for their mating ritual and bite. He feels the raised skin and his entire being hurts, aches from loneliness and the loss of his mate.

But he also tries to remember the day of the ceremony with fondness, longing, wishing he could be transported to that day again. They were so nervous, but everyone was so accepting and explained how it worked; it was the perfect moment for them. Hoseok looked so beautiful. He was so beautiful, but that particular night he looked stunning, his eyes sparkling with happiness as they stood under the moonlight with the snow falling down to bless them, the spirits of the forest alive and sharing their joy.

The mating evening they yelled at the sky in ecstasy.

Now Yoongi screams at the world in pain.

He got a call that night. There was something in the pit of his stomach that had him unsettled, and the reason came in that phone call.

Just as now his days blend into nights, the walls of the hospital seemed to blend into one another as he rushed into the emergency room, into that long and too bright corridor. He ran as fast as he could, but it was still too late.

He vaguely remembers someone holding him up. Another person said they would make the necessary arrangements. A familiar voice and scent stood by him the entire time, anchoring him, but he didn’t know which of his brothers it was, and he is too ashamed to admit it to this day. Nothing from those days, those weeks, those first months made sense to him.

People came and went, leaving him food, cleaning around him, stopping when he started shouting and the fire inside him threatened to come out if they came close enough to taint Hoseok’s remaining scent. Nine-tailed foxes - at least amongst his family - were not known to nest, but for days on end he could not leave the comfort of every piece of fabric that vaguely smelled like his mate.

He heard someone visiting saying he was going feral, giving in too much into his instincts. He just huddled under the blanket, ignoring them until they went away.

But he almost went feral when he overheard a passerby saying a human was not worth all this grieving.

Hoseok was his human. His mate. His hope of being a better person in this world. But now there is no hope in loving or trusting another person as much as he did Hoseok - or at all. Funny. No hope. He used to say Hoseok was his Hope. And now he is Hopeless.

As he gripped Hoseok’s cold hand tightly in his, the same thoughts crossed his mind in an almost infinite loop. Please be born again. I will wait forever, however many lifetimes it takes for you to find me again. Please come back to being my mate. I miss you. Please be born again. Yoongi felt nothing when they caught the culprit. It was just a drunk kid who crossed the wrong lane and lost control of the vehicle, going into the sidewalk.

Yoongi felt no pity for the stupid kid.

Yoongi felt no need for revenge. He honestly thought that something from his world would take Hoseok out, but he was wrong. It was something completely and stupidly human.

He felt nothing when he received the compensation from the lawsuit.

He felt nothing.

Yoongi has felt nothing but despair since that day.

Living in reclusion has been perfect for him except for that one time each month he needs to drive to the shops in the nearest town to get supplies. His truck takes some time to function whenever he needs in these cold mornings, but he is used to it. His journey into the town is always uneventful. He could drive the path with his eyes closed by now, his hands clutching the steering wheel in anxiety of having to interact with people, of strange and overwhelming scents and too loud noise.

There is medicine that can help, but it numbs him. He has tried different ones, but they all stop him from feeling what he wants - and claims he needs. Hoseok deserves to be felt.

The first snow of the season has fallen. He tries to always stop whatever he is doing and watch it fall, winter after winter, even if it hurts. But it is a pain that is also filled with the happy memory of meeting Hoseok for the first time.

With the snow coming harder, he knows it might be the last trip for supplies he manages for a while. He bundles up, picks up his scarf, the still lingering scent his sensitive nose can still faintly pick up comforting him in the task.

Before leaving the car, he opens up the scarf, making it cover more of his face so his nose is pressed against the familiar warmth of Hoseok’s perfume. He takes a deep breath and opens the car door, feeling the chill in the air, a shiver in his spine. He takes one step before he is suddenly overthrown by the stronger-than-usual scent, his scent. He turns around frantically before meeting a familiar gaze, heart almost doubling in size inside his chest, the mating bite flaming against his shoulder, tears starting to run down his face as he hears the voice he missed for so long.

“I finally found you.”

cruise control - this one hands down. it's so fucking hard to write a fic based on a time period and the amount of research i did on this guy was enough for me to write 13k words of it lmao. definitely the most challenging fic for me, but also one of my favourites. can you just imagine driving down a stretch of highway, the top of the convertible car you rented open, hair flowing with the wind, and with namjoon by your side? yeah. that's the inspo

esse tuus - two words: incubus jimin. but also i played around with my writing style for this fic. it's so much more? poetic? than my usual smut pieces. also, one of my absolutely favourite lines i've ever written exists here.

et sic incipit - i have a thing for demon aus, can you tell? anyway, this one started it all for me and is the reason why i'm doing a intertwined universe with the other five remaining boys. it's also the fic where i started describing places more since this fic takes place in multiple (2) settings. also the time when i started paying attention to where the hands go when it comes to yknow. fucking.

it's you all along - i've never wrote a soulmates au before and i think i popped off ngl!!!! i probably would love to write another soulmates au one day (not starring these two necessarily). if i had to present my writing to someone, i think i'd be handing them this fic because it's just quintessential moon™

thinly veiled desires - sub!ot7 :) my first major "challenge" to fit smut in as little words as possible while having one major theme: a blindfold. it was definitely a challenge for me when it comes to wrecking my brain for ideas that involves a blindfold without repeating the same thing over and over again. you can't make me choose a favourite from this drabble list. it's SIMPLY impossible.

3 improvements in writing

descriptions, descriptions, descriptions - expanding more on what the characters see, feel, touch, etc. is a big one for me. but also thanks to @kithtaehyung, i know have a love for thirds when it comes to repetition in fics :) it's great! (also check out her works or else)

author voice - she's often elusive, but i think i have a pretty solid author voice ++ writing style now that i've written so much!

planning - i think this is a massive one. ever since i started cruise control, i really tried to piece together how the story unfolds. i don't always write down every. single. thing i plan out, but i do have a clearer outline in my fics (i feel like you can also see, err, read the difference between my recent fics vs the ones i posted in the very beginning when i first started this blog pen pals with benefits for example 😔)

2 resolutions

say 'no' more often - i gotta learn to manage my workload yall. now that i do streaming, learning korean, work full-time, writing has to take a back burner. i'm by no means sacrificing my writing, but if i keep on saying 'yes' to collabs without planning my year out, i won't be able to write anything.

keep writing - even if it's 5 words or 1,000; i gotta keep going. kinda ties in to self-confidence? i need to be better at going 'holy shit yeah, moon, you can write' because i think you can tell when i feel the fantasy of a fic or if i don't

1 favourite line

okay first of all, how dare you, because i wrote an entire masterlist's worth of fics. that's 38 individual works (not counting the msk drabbles + all the work i put into the summer games with @btscreatorscorner), which totals to 204,596 words (according to ao3) in ~9 months. to make me choose just ONE line is criminal >:C

aaaaaand. that's it. thanks so much for reading through this, what the fuck. seriously, this was such a fun introspective journey down memory lane. i'm not 10000% satisfied with where my writing is at currently (aren't most authors?) but i'm sure that will only be better as i continue to develop my craft. i would love to read through this again next year to see if something's have changed! without further ado, have a great start to 2022 🥂
