A little something to celebrate the Scarabia manga release

On AO3

   There's nothing wrong with Yuuna coming to Scarabia. The dorm students like her. She's made friends with the Magic Carpet. Kalim likes having her over. And more than that, she's the reason Scarabia didn't completely fall apart during the winter holidays so her being here is fine – everyone owes her one, even Jamil (in a way).

   The problem with Yuuna is less her presence in the dorm and more her influence on Kalim. Jamil's master has always been extremely influenceable – to a degree he worries about it every day – but everyone in this school makes it worse. From that lazy lion to these malicious mermaids, it's a daily battle to make sure Kalim's brain doesn't get poisoned and yet… It happens. All the time. No matter how much Jamil tries to protect him, Kalim always ends up getting dragged into trouble because he listened to the wrong person. To be fair to her, Yuuna isn't like that. Among all the students in that school, she's actually one of the most reasonable if such a thing as a reasonable NRC student can exist. There's nothing wrong with her energy, her personality, or even her constant selfies – though that's annoying, but like Cater's habit, Jamil can bear it – but there's a big problem with her vocabulary.

“Kalipiyo, lookie! I got these from a suuuuuper cute shop downtown!”

“Wow, they're really cute,” Kalim says as he watches Yuuna show him every little thing she's bought. “My sisters would like them, I think?”

“Really? I'll bring you there next time, it'll be totes fun!”

   The conversation continues under Jamil's watchful eye. These interactions have become part of the everyday Scarabia life and nobody bats an eye at the girl talking with their dorm leader… Nobody but Jamil. Just by looking at Kalim, he can observe the gears in his brain turning, going at full-speed before stopping – he doesn't understand half of what Yuuna is saying. Their language is the same, but there's a fundamental difference in how they express themselves.

   Like now.

“And like when Gririn told me that? OMG, it toooootally sent me!”

“Sent you where?”

   Though their energies match and Yuuna doesn't seem bothered at Kalim's interruption, it's obvious that there's a lack of understanding from both parties. (Not like Jamil fully understands what she’s going on about either.) If it were just that, Jamil would brush it off – Kalim's upbringing didn't prepare him to endure a barrage of slang thrown at him, so of course, he'd be a bit lost – as there aren't many things as amusing as watching Kalim struggle. If only it were just that.

   Later, when they're in Kalim's room to finish homework – or rather to finish Kalim's and only his homework that he forgot about – the problem manifests itself.

“–if you read this paragraph, you'll be able to answer the last question,” Jamil explains, his finger tapping on a small excerpt of the text they're studying. “Got it?”

“Yes! Thankies Jamil!”

    Here it is. Yuuna's way of talking has seeped into Kalim's brain and once in a while, he'll start talking like her. There shouldn't be anything wrong with this except for the fact Jamil can't stop thinking about it happening during a very serious meeting. 

   What if Kalim has to replace his father one day, and he starts telling his interlocutor unintelligible sentences like “Totes sorry 'bout that” or “Like, if you wanna get hella investments from us, just hit me up”? The most frightening thing is how plausible this all seems. Perhaps letting him hang out with Yuuna too much was a mistake, but it’s too late now – she’s become a regular at the dorm now, an almost permanent fixture, like the desert or the oasis, when she isn’t out to cause ruckus on the campus with Ace and Deuce.  How can Jamil fix this before Kalim makes a huge mistake in an official meeting? His quickly spiraling train of thought is interrupted by Kalim’s index poking his forehead.

“What’s got you so worked up? You keep furrowing your eyebrows like crazy, y’know?”

   If anything, Kalim’s words only make Jamil furrow his eyebrows more. It’s honestly pretty incredible how Yuuna’s way of speaking has stuck to Kalim this fast when they’ve only known each other properly for less than a month. A lifetime of language and manners lessons are as weak as a sand castle when matched against a trendy girl’s mannerism…

“Jamil, lookie here,” Kalim says, unaware of his servant’s inner turmoil.

    Still deep in thoughts, Jamil turns toward Kalim to ask him what’s happening. “What–”

      His vision is obscured and something soft touches his lips. This only lasts a split second before Kalim pulls away, a wide grin on his face.

“So, how is it? Yuuna keeps complaining about your sour face when we talk so she told me to just that… She called it ‘the kissy-kissy plan’ or something like that!” Proud of remembering that (frankly stupid) name, Kalim puffs his chest. “It worked just like she said!”

   Jamil has a few issues with Ōjō Yuuna, ranging from her having ruined his rebellion to her constant selfie taking habits, but her speaking tics infecting Kalim is the more pressing one… Was the more pressing one. As long as Kalim only uses it with him and not outside, perhaps Jamil can let it slide. It can be a little cute– no, it can be a little amusing to see him try using it in the wrong way. It’s fine… Even if neither of them really understands everything Yuuna inadvertently taught Kalim.
