Reading this feels like having someone talk at you about their ttrpg campaign where they've drunk so much of their own Kool aid that they can't understand external audiences need some sort of frame of reference provided to understand Why all of these mysterious proper noins being dropped into the setting are theoretically interesting. Genuinely not sure what's worse: the fact that there's some sort of hymen magic we re establishing on page one (1) of the novel proper or the fact that it's first person present tense

Really immediately getting a feel for what sort of time I'm in for from the way this book opens with a glossary of bullshit setting specific terminology including a regular word that had been given proper noun status.

Im finished with chihayafuru now... it was a good time! I will try to gather my thoughts and write a more involved review/rec post if I can but. To be honest my pain levels have been so bad lately that it's difficult to even read, let alone get my thoughts in order. So that part of this blog might need to keep being on the back burner until I can make some headway there. In the meantime I will just leave us off with these pages

And just to make sure to head out on the most heterosexual note possible, we're doing a hanano chapter for our finale here. Easily one of my least favorite characters from the core cast. Sorry I will never give a shit about characters whose entire personality is being obsessed with getting a boyfriend.

Hmm I don't really like this decision for the endgame here... obviously I am a heterophobe and just don't like it when straight people get together. But here I genuinely feel like it's undercutting taichis arc a bit. Obviously thr angle they're going for is "taichi didn't need to become the master to be the person closest to chihaya" which like whatever. But metanarratively it feels like the story is saying "since we gave arata the master title then taichi has to get the girl to balance out the scales." I would have really just preferred that they didn't resolve the love triangle at all ! But whatever. It could have gone way way way worse in the romance department so I can be content with this.

The character doing most of the speaking here is a fully blind karuta instructor at an elementary school. And we have a sort of disciple of the current karuta master, who is slowly losing his vision and planning to quit over it, coming out here to figure out how a blind man plays karuta and what motivates him to do that. And the note we decide to land on is "oh it helped him stop binge eating so he could lose weight" it's just really gross and not thematically resonant. Also now seems like a good time to note that the only even vaguely fat character among the main cast is referred to by the nickname "meat buns" constantly. It's just a kind of completely unchecked ambient disdain for fatness permeating the work and it sucks

It does really suck that for as much as chihayafuru is Body Positive™️ by the standards of sports manga, having a lot of compassion for an interest in characters who aren't at their physical peak or who are otherwise disabled, it still has some really nasty ambient fat phobia permeating the whole thing. It stands out really awkwardly every time it comes up

I think chihayafuru is really coming together for me in these last few arcs. Stuff in the middle felt like it could drag or get repetitive but now we're really in the payoff zone and I'm having a great time with it
