finally got around to watching more of this, around the first half of the show, and it is extreeeeemely mediocre in pretty much every area but the visuals. The voice acting is passable at best and actively grating at worst, with a lot of it sounding like a mid budget anime dub. The overarching narrative is mildly interesting but the episode to episode plot really isn't that much. And pretty much all of the music sucks, but it's definitely for tastes that aren't mine so ymmv on that one.
Probably the biggest issue here is that in this first set of episodes they have failed to establish a single interpersonal dynamic that's compelling to watch. Really disappointing. Even the owl house, which I notoriously think is pretty garbage and overrated managed to hit the ground running on a very fun character setup with Luz and eda's precocious bright eyed pupil and shitty clocked-out mentor dynamic. i was gonna give a brief description of like the main character dynamics here but i literally got bored in the middle of typing it up so i'm just gonna go play splatoon instead.
anyway there are gonna be some 10-15 year olds who have the time of their life watching this show probably and that's great for them. but i don't think there's anything happening here that is going to make it worth watchign for anyone else really
Just watched the first episode of Jentry Chau vs the Underworld, which is a new netflix original animation that dropped today. It's got 13 episodes in its first season which is a pleasant surprises.
Aesthetics: top notch! Beautiful colors, pleasing character design style, interesting shot compositions, and I like the cinematic aspect ratio they went with
Writing: pretty standard fare for animated series first episode. Nothing that's stuck out to me either positively or negatively yet. Definitely willing to see where it goes
Our premise is this: Jentry Chau, is a chinese-american teen who has been living in Seoul until, on the day before her 16th birthday, she begins being pursued by an evil spirit who wants to take her to his master. In order to protect her, her grandmother brings her back to her texas hometown that she left 8 years ago after accidentally starting a massive fire with her uncontrolled powers that the town still hasn't fully recovered from. In her attempt to fight back the evil that's pursuing her, a portal to the underworld opens there.
It seems like the show is going to be a buffyesque, where high school life is interspersed with the burdens of demon fighting for this girl who just wants to be an average teen. whether or not it can deliver on that premise in a fun way is yet to be seen but i'll definitely try and give the rest of the episodes a watch and I suggest any animation fans at least just check it out to get a taste of the animation and boost its numbers a bit, since they've done zero promoting of this show.

I had all these chihayafuru pages screenshotted from the last time I was reading it but I didn't end up posting anything and I forgot what I was going to say about any of it. So have them presented without context

I love it when a girl is a little bit stupid. It's a necessary trait for many protagonists
