ok hi hello splatoon time :3 my whole like… gimmick is that there’s a bunch of them instead of just the normal 4 agents . unfortunately this makes them harder to talk about . but i will try my best
june, natari, and carter are agents 3, 4, and 5 respectively, and they basically do the story for splatoon 1 working together! natari is an octoling who got too curious and snuck up to inkopolis, really liked it, and ended up staying. there’s a lot of story details i have to overhaul but that’s pretty solid
here they are!! left to right is june, natari, yet unnamed pink inkling (she’s not an agent, just their friend), and carter
then for the splatoon 2 gang! mimosa is agent 6, doing pretty much the same thing as canon agent 4. friday is agent 7, who’s like… canon agent 3 but only octo expansion onwards. they speedran the horrors. agent 8 is just named eight as of now but i wanted to make him a trans guy because there is just. so sooo much potential for a trans narrative in octo expansion. wake up not remembering who you are or who you’re meant to be. but you can make that however you want now . here’s them! pretty clear who’s who i think, they’re color coded
finally the splatoon 3 gang, kemi (agent 9) and ben (agent 10). they’re kind of like your neo3s !!! i was excited to see you also made 3 of them (counting little buddy). i don’t have a ton of lore for them yet but i want to do it more . hopefully sending this ask can motivate me to figure out more stuff lmao. here they are!! ben on the left, kemi on the right
and . yeah!! i wish i had more to say about them but i don’t…. they’ve kind of been in my brain on and off for years now and they’ve changed so much (might change even more from here on!) and they mean a lot to me so i just want to be able to share them !!! ^.^ if you want more i can give you misc facts but i’ve already talked enough here i think heheh
OOOOOOHHH OHHH. sorry im bad at commenting on big infodump asks BUT. I LOVE THEM ALL and this art is sosos so cute.... having way more agents than in canon who work together is a rlly cool idea i think.. their names are so cute also? i love these sillies :] (ALSO TRANSGENER EIGHT.... SO REAL)

Mixed Up in Time- Peter Parker One Shot
Pairing: Peter Parker X Rogers/Carter!Reader
Prompt: When Peter accidentally time travels back to 1960, he meets you and a few familiar faces, including your mother Peggy Carter.
Word Count: 4500
Warnings: probably swearing; bad usage of 60’s slang
Important to note: The blip happened, but we’re ignoring Steve going back to Peggy and Tony dying and the Russos’ dumb time travel rules; we’re also ignoring that Sharon and Steve were ever romantically involved
A/N: i was watching back to the future and thought of this sooo yeah
~~~
The room was pale white, and nothing looked familiar to Peter. The wooden bed frame looked new yet dated, and the mattress was incredibly uncomfortable for him to lay on. He slowly tried to sit up, but stopped as he realized his hand was locked to the nearby nightstand with a handcuff. He could easily break the handcuff- and the nightstand, but his mind was so filled with confusion, he didn’t know if that was the right thing to do. He was locked up in a foreign bedroom, he needed to play this smart.
He heard voices from behind the closed door before it opened. A man stepped inside, leaning on a crutch for support. He looked at Peter critically, like he was trying to figure out why Peter was here- and frankly, the teen was trying to figure that part out too.
The man asked, almost hesitantly, “Who sent you?”
“What?” Peter replied.
“Who sent you? Was it Hydra?”
“Hydra? No, why would Hydra send me?” He asked.
“So you are working for Hydra!” He accused, and a woman stepped into the room.
“Daniel! You’re scaring the poor boy.” She said, her brown eyes glancing over at Peter momentarily.
“Poor boy? He demolished your car when he fell out of the sky!” The man, Daniel, stated. The woman stepped in further to the room as Daniel took a step back. She smiled kindly at Peter; something about her red lips and English accent made her seem familiar to him, but it wasn’t until she spoke again that he recognized her.
“What’s your name, son? My name is Agent Carter.”
Agent Carter. The Agent Margaret “Peggy” Carter.
Peter looked at her in disbelief, his eyes growing wide at her words. He slapped a hand to his forehead, groaning in frustration. He rambled helplessly, “Oh my god. Mr. Stark’s going to kill me, but I can’t believe it- he was right, it actually worked.”
“Slow down. Mr. Stark?” Peggy asked, raising an eyebrow at him. “How do you know Howard?”
“Um, what year is it?” Peter replied, stress still flooding in his body.
“1960.” Daniel answered. His skeptical eyes never left Peter as Peggy stepped closer to him.
“You’re not from here, are you?” She spoke softly.
“You’re going to think I’m crazy, but I’m Peter Parker and I’m from 2023. Well, actually I was born in 2001, but then in 2018, I died for five years, and I just came back to life and now I’m here in 1960, with you two. And the Mr. Stark I was talking about is Howard’s son actually.” He rambled nervously, “I have to say, Miss Agent Carter, it is an honor to meet you.”
Peggy looked at him in disbelief, “You- you know who I am?”
“Yeah, Mr. Rogers told me-” He paused, seeing the look of heartbreak flash across her face. “Oh, right, you don’t know.”
“Steve’s alive?” She breathed out. Peter looked behind her, spotting Daniel standing in his own discomfort now.
“I’m so messing up the space time equilibrium right now. Oh my god, did Back to the Future teach me nothing?” Peter mumbled to himself, and Peggy stepped forward, cautiously undoing the handcuff and freeing him from the restraint.
“Am I the only one who’s lost here?” Daniel asked, looking between Peggy and Peter.
“Call Howard, Daniel. Peter’s in the wrong time, and he needs to get home.” She said before making her way out of the room. “Peter, stay here until we can get Howard to sort this all out.” She paused in the doorway, “And do not mention Steve. No one can know.”
Daniel rushed out after her, leaving Peter alone. He let out a sigh, leaning back against the headboard. Well, maybe that’s why everything seemed strange- he was now living several decades before his time.
“Mr. Stark said-” Peter started, but Happy cut him off.
“You wanted to be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, remember? Tony invited you to join the Avengers and you refused. He will be back from his mission soon, but until then, don’t do anything or else I’ll get blamed.”
“Happy, come on. He could use my help.” He insisted, trailing after Happy in the compound, “Can you at least tell me what the mission is?”
“Rogers is looking for someone, and Stark is helping him.”
“Kid! What are you doing here?” Tony’s voice boomed as he stepped into the compound, a sullen Steve following in behind in, just to quickly duck down the hall towards his room. Bucky and Sam sent Peter a sad glance before both following their friend. Peter couldn’t help but recognize the own grief present on Tony’s face.
“What happened? Did someone die?” Peter asked quietly, and Tony bit his lip unsure.
“Look, kid, there’s something I should tell you about Steve.” Tony sat down on the couch and Happy slowly left the room, giving it to Tony and Peter. “You know Agent Peggy Carter?”
“The SSR agent that Steve,” Peter paused, “that Steve loves?”
“Yes. When Steve and I went to 1970, he saw a file on Agent Carter. She had a daughter back in the 40’s, and Steve asked me to help him find her. Besides Sharon, this girl is the closest thing to Peggy he has.”
“Did you?”
“She disappeared in the 60’s. No sign of struggle, she just vanished one day. Her case was so buried that Romanoff was the only one who could find it, but even then, it was all dead ends. This was our last shot at finding her or anything that traced back to her. But Steve found a letter from Peggy that says-“
He was cut off by a loud crash from the basement, making both of them stand up immediately. They ran down the stairs to see Sam and Bucky holding back a distraught Steve in the hallway.
“What the hell is going on?” Tony questioned.
“The time machine.” Sam replied. In awe of the flickering white light coming from the time machine, Peter stepped forward, eyeing it curiously.
“Tony, please, I need to go back.” Steve said, his voice hoarse.
“No. You’re not going back there, Steve. You know it’d mess with the timeline too much if you went back.” Tony stated.
“Kid, get back!” Bucky called out. Peter turned to look at the four older men across the room.
“Peter, no!” Tony shouted, but it was too late. The time machine erupted, and the last thing Peter remembered was the blinding light overcoming him before he succumbed to darkness.
“Peter, wake up.” A soft voice pulled him out of his sleep. He jumped back instinctively before he registered that you weren’t a threat, holding a plate of cookies and a retro blue can of Pepsi, one that Peter hardly even recognized as the classic soda.
“Who- who are you?” He questioned, uneasily.
“My name’s Y/N. I thought you might be hungry.” You said, offering him the plate and he took it warily. You set the mug on the nightstand beside him. “So, you’re from the future.”
With a mouthful of cookies, Peter nodded, before he swallowed, “Yes. And, these are really good by the way.” He replied, eating another cookie.
“Thank you. It’s my mum’s recipe.” You answered, and he paused, looking at you quizzically.
“Mum?” He questioned. Considering you had a clearly American accent, he was confused by your British word choice.
“Peggy.” You explained, laughing a little in embarrassment. “She’s my mum, but we’ve lived in New York my whole life, so I’ve got the American accent. I just can’t call her mom- it doesn’t sit right.”
“Agent Carter is your mother?” He asked in disbelief, “That’s so awesome.”
“Right. She told me you knew about her. What’s the future like? Pretty neato, I bet.” You sat down on the opposite side of the bed from him, smiling softly.
“I don’t know how much I can tell you. I don’t want to-”
“Ruin the space-time continuum, as my mum said.” You finished his sentence for him, “It’s pretty far out that you’re from the future. This completely changes how we should perceive the space-time continuum. We’re so focused on getting to the moon that we haven’t even thought about the future yet. Has a woman time traveled yet? I’d love to be the first one to- or maybe the first woman on the moon. Has a woman been to space yet?”
Peter blushed at your ramblings, finding it adorable that you’d be so interested in it. He wanted to tell you that you’d be the first at all of it, but then he remembered Tony’s words. Peggy Carter’s daughter disappeared without a trace. You didn’t exist in the history books at all; you were just Agent Carter’s lost daughter.
“Y/N,” Peggy started, stepping into the room again. “I was going to ask you to keep Peter company, but I see you’re already doing that.”
“Mum, we were just talking about-”
“The moon. You’ll get there, love.” She placed a hand on your shoulder, before turning to Peter.
“Howard won’t be here for several hours. When he arrives, could you help him create a time machine to get you home?” Peggy asked, and Peter nodded.
“Yeah, but we need Hank Pym as well.” He replied. “He has a particle- the Pym particle, and we need some. Just a little bit.”
“I’ll make some calls.” She stated, making her way out of the room again, “And, Y/N, when I say keep him company, I mean he is not allowed to leave this house.”
“Yes, mum.” You called back to her, hearing her walk down the hall to her office, closing the door behind her. “Right. Let’s go.”
“Wait, but Peggy said-” Peter looked at you like you were crazy as you stood up from the bed and held your hand out to him.
“Peter, come on, when else are you going to explore 1960? Besides, you could use some new threads.” You smiled encouragingly, and he timidly stood up from his spot on the bed. He took your hand and you quietly snuck him out of the house, easily slipping past your mother.
As you walked down the street with Peter, he felt like he was transported into an old film. Everyone was wearing strange clothes (appropriately though from the decade), and the cars- they were all so old, but cool nonetheless.
“I’m going to get a slug bug like that when I can drive.” You told him, pointing to a VW Beetle as it passed by.
“Those look so-” He paused, “old.”
“You are in the 60s, remember?” You teased, tugging him into a small clothing shop. He froze when he looked at all the odd clothes. He wouldn’t usually wear anything besides jeans and a dorky t-shirt or casual sweater, but something about seeing you smile as you looked over the clothes made him at least want to try to enjoy his time in this unfamiliar decade.
You had barely in the store for five minutes before you were shoving a handful of clothes into Peter’s arms, pushing him towards the dressing rooms. “You have to try these on.”
“Y/N, I don’t know,” He trailed off, eyeing the colored plaid pants in the pile.
“1960, Peter.” You reminded him, and he nodded. Peter closed the dressing room door and you continued to mindlessly browse around while you waited for him.
“So you never answered me about space.” You called out to him. He laughed behind the door as he changed.
“Yes, we make it to space.”
“Have we found other life yet?” You asked excitedly.
“Well,” He sighed, “they technically found us, but we fought them off several times.” Dressed in green plaid pants and a brown sweater, he opened the door, “I’ve actually been to space- been to another planet in another solar system even.”
“Oh, no, that’s hideous.” You shook your head, and he laughed, closing the door to try on more clothes. “Another planet, though? What was it like?”
“Um, it was awful. It was destroyed, and I kind of died there.” Peter replied, shaking his head as he didn’t want to relive the memory.
“Died? You 21st century people have an unreal way of speaking.”
It was then he realized that between your slang and his that you had no clue he was serious. “Actually, I did die. This alien killed off half the universe and I died, but then my team traveled back in time five years later and saved us- all of us.” He looked at himself in the mirror at his newest outfit, deciding he thought he looked good enough to show you.
“That must have been awful. I’m sorry, Peter.” You answered, feeling guilty for asking.
“It’s alright. I was readjusting to being home, or well in 2023, when I traveled back here.” He explained, opening the door again, but you had your back to him as you looked at some sunglasses. “How’s this?”
You turned back around to face him and a smile lit up your face at the slimming white trousers and bright blue polo. Under your intense stare, Peter felt himself growing self-conscious. “It’s twitchin’.”
“Is that a good thing?” He asked with a laugh, and you nodded.
“It means it looks great.” You laughed. “Now you don’t stick out as much.”
“As much?”
“You still look like a future guy to me.”
After buying Peter his new look, you took him to your favorite little diner, one with the best milkshakes. Although Peter had only known you for a few short hours, you were captivating to him. He’d never met someone so fascinated by the world and so incredibly brilliant for your age. If you were anything like your mother, Peter could understand why Steve was still in love with her; Peter would still be dreaming of you in seventy years.
“Have you ever been to Times Square?” You asked him as the two of you left the quaint diner.
“Not in 1960.” He joked, making you smile at him.
“Well, then we definitely need to go.” You stated, “We should also go see a movie. There’s this new Hitchcock film coming out called Psycho-”
“Psycho gave me nightmares.” Peter shuddered at the memory, laughing lightly, “Oh yeah, I’ve seen it in the future.”
“Then you can hold me when the scary parts come up.” You joked, catching the blush that hit his cheeks. Before he could respond, a car pulled to a stop next to you two on the sidewalk.
“What did I say about leaving?” Peggy questioned with the window rolled down from her spot in the passenger seat.
“Sorry, mum.” You sighed, opening the back door. You let Peter climb in first and then you followed after him. Peter looked around the fancy interior of the car in confusion, until he saw the S emblem on the steering wheel. This was the car of Howard Stark.
“Did you get me a milkshake?” The driver asked you with a cheeky smile, and you shook your head.
“Had I known my mother would hire a chauffeur then maybe I would have gotten you one.” You stated, crossing your arms as she rolled her eyes at you. You turned to Peter, “This is Jarvis by the way. He’s Mr. Stark’s driver.”
“You’re the Jarvis?” Peter questioned.
“The Jarvis? Am I famous in the future too?” He asked, starting to drive the four of you away.
“No, but Mr. Stark has mentioned you before.”
“Peter.” Peggy said, calling his attention back to her, “I don’t know much about time travel and the space-time continuum that you and Howard keep mentioning, but I know every second you spend here could be detrimental to our world. Please, keep talks of the future to a minimum, especially since we are going to see Howard right now. Do not discuss his son or any details of the future.”
“Yes, Miss Carter.” He nodded, and you reached over, placing a hand on his leg to reassure him.
“Y/N, when we get to Howard’s lab, I want you to go home with Daniel. Jarvis and I will need to oversee this operation.” She stated.
“I’m not leaving.” You replied defiantly, and Peter held his breath, feeling the sudden tension in the air. “And especially not with Daniel.”
“Y/N Carter, you will treat Daniel with respect. You’re like a daughter to him.”
“Daniel is not my father though, and he will never be.” You said.
“Fine.” Peggy huffed. “You can stay, but only because you could help Howard build this machine.”
“Thank you.” You muttered.
The four of you arrived at a large warehouse on the edge of the city. Peter, suddenly feeling nervous about meeting Mr Stark Sr., followed behind you, Peggy, and Jarvis. He’d heard enough bad things about Howard from Tony, and now he was going to meet the monster firsthand. When they stepped inside the warehouse, Peter spotted a woman and a man standing beside each other, overlooking parts spread on a table.
“Howard,” Peggy called out, getting their attention. When Howard turned around, Peter immediately recognized him; his resemblance to Tony was uncanny. The woman, though- he had no clue who she was, but her kind smile made him feel welcome.
“You must be Peter from the future.” Howard stepped forward, outstretching a hand to him. Peter hesitantly shook his head. “Tell me, what’s my legacy in the future?”
“Miss Carter said I shouldn’t discuss details.” Peter replied, nervously clearing his throat. Howard laughed before turning back to the table.
“Did you get the Pym particle?” Peggy asked Howard. Before he could respond, the door opened once more and in walked another man and a woman.
“If you think I’d let Howard Stark use my particle without my presence,” The man trailed off, and Peter froze, recognizing the man.
“Oh my god.” He breathed out, eyes trained on the young Hank Pym who he’d met through Scott once- the Hank Pym that he studied in school, the Hank Pym he did a project on in middle school.
“Peter, this is Hank Pym, Janet Van Dyne, and Ana Jarvis.” You said, clearing up the strangers’ names for him.
“Why’s he looking at us like that?” Hank asked.
“I- I know you from the future; both of you.” Peter replied, looking between him and Janet.
“No details, remember?” Peggy spoke up, “Now, let’s get this time machine running.”
For the next few days, Peter worked tirelessly with this new team to get the time machine built and running. He was happy that Tony had gone over the specs of the machine with him after the battle, and he was also grateful that he had an impressive memory that allowed him to remember all of it. If anything was off in the slightest, Peter wouldn’t be sent back to 2023; he’d be lost to the quantum realm forever. And, even though your mother wanted you as far removed as possible from this, you stayed by Peter’s side through it all.
“It’s done.” Peter said, proudly, as all of you overlooked the machine.
“We built a time machine.” Hank stated in disbelief, still not fully believing his particle was the key to all of it.
“And this.” Howard stepped forward with a small machine in his hands. Peggy looked at it curiously.
“What is that?” She asked the question on everyone’s mind.
“We just built a time machine with technology we shouldn’t know about. This will make us forget this week.” Howard explained.
“But we’ll forget Peter.” You said softly, looking over to Peter with a new found sadness on your face. He wanted to tell you it’ll all be fine, that he’d see you in the future, that you had been the first woman to space so he read about you in his history textbook- but he couldn’t. He didn’t want to lie to you. He didn’t want you to know that Peggy dies of old age, Janet spends decades in the quantum realm, Howard becomes an abusive father before he’s assassinated by Bucky Barnes (who you definitely knew about), and that you of all people disappear sometime this year without any trace of your whereabouts.
Before anyone could say anything, you hurried out of the warehouse. Peter looked to Peggy, silently asking if he could go after you, and she nodded in approval. He ran off after you, finding you sitting on a nearby bench, overlooking the city. You held tightly to a compass in your hands, and Peter hesitantly sat beside you.
“I know it’s only been a week, but I don’t- I don’t want to forget you.” Your voice was unsteady as you spoke. “What happens to me in the future?”
“I don’t know.” Peter replied quietly.
“I want the truth, Peter. I know I’m not in any of your textbooks, but you know something about my future. I can see it in how you reacted to who I am.”
Peter looked at you, unsure of what to say. His eyes flickered down to the compass in your hand. A picture of Steve sat in the small compass, just like how Steve had that compass of Peggy. He felt his heart stop as he processed the small object’s meaning, “You’re- you’re Steve’s daughter.”
You closed the compass instinctively, your own hands starting to shake, “I’m sure you know the story of Captain America. He died before my mother could tell him.”
“He didn’t.” Peter began, “He didn’t die. Steve’s frozen in ice, and he comes out of it in the future. He’s the reason I’m here. He knew Peggy had a daughter, and he was trying to come see you.”
“My father’s alive?” You asked, feeling tears well up in your eyes.
“Yeah, but, Y/N,” He sighed, “You disappear. At some time during this decade, you disappear from existence. No one knows what happens to you.”
You were silent for a moment, processing his words, “What if I went with you?”
“What? To the future?” He asked, and you nodded, “No, Y/N, you can’t. That’d be breaking so many-”
“Think about it. I disappear from existence, and no one knows, but what if no one remembers? I could go with you and meet my father.”
“But your mother-” Peter started, but a voice cut him off.
“Would want you to go.” Peggy said, and you turned to face her. “Peter told me when he got here that Steve was alive, but I didn’t know how to tell you. If you want to go to the future, then I won’t hold you back.”
“But, mum, I’d never see you again, unless,” You trailed off, looking to Peter, who shook his head sadly, confirming Peggy’s fate by 2023.
“Take the compass and go see your father, Y/N.” She spoke softly, “I won’t erase my memories, but I’ll make sure your disappearance remains a mystery. The future will be safe.”
Speechless, you stood up and hugged your mother tightly, a few tears slipping. After a few solemn moments of goodbye, the three of you returned to the warehouse. Peter bid everyone farewell, thanking them for all of the assistance. You wordlessly hugged Daniel.
“Take care of my mum for me.” You told him. Before anyone could say anything, you gave your mother one last hug goodbye. With your compass in one hand, you held onto Peter’s hand with the other. Howard pressed a couple buttons and you two were met with a blinding light, saying goodbye to 1960.
~~~
“Steve, what were you thinking? It’s broken!” Tony shouted, pressing some buttons in an attempt to somehow bring Peter back even though he knew the machine was past fixing.
“If you found out you had a daughter seventy years ago, you’d want to go see her too!” Steve exclaimed, coming to Tony’s side. Bucky and Sam stayed back, looking at their friend sorrowfully. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“You can’t go back there. I know what it’s like to miss out on your life, too, but she’s gone. Peggy’s gone, your daughter’s gone.” Bucky said in his best attempt to console his friend.
“And now the kid’s gone again. The kid that I risked my life to save is gone because you couldn’t handle your own kid being gone, your kid that you didn’t even know existed!” Tony fought back. As Tony and Steve began to argue, Sam and Bucky heard a small crash behind them.
“Are you two done arguing because the spider boy’s back.” Sam stated, and the bickering between the other two men immediately stopped.
“Kid, why are you dressed like you belong on the cover of Abbey Road?” Tony asked immediately, taking in Peter’s white suit. Peter opened his mouth to respond, but nothing came out as he saw Steve’s eyes fix on you, an unreadable expression on his face.
You fidgeted with the compass between your fingers, nervously breathing out, “Mum says hi.”
Wordlessly, Steve enveloped you in a tight hug. Bucky looked at Peter questioningly and Sam poked at Peter’s suit’s collar, as if to ask why the hell he was wearing something so out of the ordinary.
“I needed some new threads.” Peter joked, making you let out a small laugh.
“Right on.” You smiled.
~~~
“Wait, wait, so you’re Captain America and Agent Carter’s daughter?” Ned asked in disbelief.
“Yes.” You nodded.
“But wouldn’t that make you like 80 now?”
“Ned!” Peter groaned at his friend’s question, and you laughed at his secondhand embarrassment.
“Yes, Ned, I technically would’ve just turned 80.” You replied, and both boys looked at you in confusion. “I was born in ‘43.”
“Dating an older woman. Nice.” Ned teased his friend, nudging Peter’s elbow.
“We time traveled. It doesn’t count. Can we please stop talking about my girlfriend’s age?” Peter let out a sigh. He’d already explained the whole time travel situation to Ned, so when he invited his friend to a Stark party a few months down the road, he didn’t expect Ned to be so invasive about your age.
“So is 2023 better than 1960?” Ned asked you, and you smiled looking over at Peter beside you.
“I’d say so.”
Seeing the intense, yet cutesy eye contact between you and Peter, Ned mumbled something about getting more soda before leaving. Peter placed a hand on your cheek, caressing it lightly, “I’m glad you came to the future with me.”
“I’m glad I did, too.” You smiled. Peter leaned in to kiss you, but paused as he saw Steve, Bucky, and Sam watching the two of you from across the crowded room. You turned to follow his eyes, scoffing a little as you looked back at Peter, “They’re such drags.”
“Absolute downers.” He laughed lightly- he picked up on some of your 60’s slang just like you’d picked up on his modern terminology.
“Just tune them out.” You joked, before leaning in to kiss your boyfriend. Who knew all it took was a little accidental time travel for you two to find each other?
Debunking some things about Hayley Atwell
I decided to write this post to address some rumors about Hayley Atwell. I’ve seen some posts years ago, about how (supposedly) problematic Hayley is, and as a 17 year old in that moment, I believed everything I read on the Internet. I'm not saying that everything you see on social media it's a lie, but you have to stop, think about it and do your own research (if you really care about it), like I did. The rumors I’ve read on Twitter (and here), basically said that Hayley hates Emily VanCamp, that Hayley and Chris Evans mistreated Emily, that Hayley is homophobic, that she said she should play Sharon wearing a wig, and that she also hates on Chloe Bennet. Like I said, I did my research to show you some stuff as regards these rumors/assumptions.
1. Hayley said she should play Sharon Carter on the MCU.
Literally how is that a bad thing? She just simply said what she thought back then (this interview is from 2011, 9 years ago). Besides, it's the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ANYTHING can happen. I think that I don't need to remind you that actors and actresses can play different characters in a same franchise, Gemma Chan played Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel and will play Sersi in Eternals, Enver Gjokaj played Daniel Sousa in Agent Carter and another minor (veeery minor) role in The Avengers as a policeman, and all those things take place in the same universe. So Hayley's thoughts back then are not as crazy as you think they are. And it's not a bad thing if she wanted that to happen.
Update (10/8/21):
About Hayley saying she should play Sharon: as I said before, this shouldn't be even considered as something bad. Besides, Emily wasn't involved with the MCU then nor was she in talks of getting casted. Why am I pointing this out? Because so many people took that as Hayley saying she can do a better job as Sharon than EVC. AND THAT'S NOT TRUE.
2. Hayley saying she would ground Sharon for kissing Steve:
(Source, minute 9:25 - 10:15) She's joking guys. You might not like or share her british humor, which is very dry, satirical, sarcastic, but what can we do about it? Stop making such a great deal about it.
Besides, there are more things that you're missing. Or, actually, things that the people who made up these rumors chose to omit. I don't know if you guys were in the Marvel fandom back in 2016 (year in which this panel took place), especially during may/june. After "Civil War" premiered, Marvel released a comic in which we discover that Steve Rogers has always been working for Hydra. So, when a fan asked Hayley if she disapproves of Sharon and Steve, she says that Peggy would be so protective over Sharon, that she wouldn't let her get close to Steve, (because of all the Hydra stuff) HERE’S THE SOURCE, minute 12:20.
3. Hayley and Chris mistreated Emily VanCamp.
Who told you that? Emily VanCamp herself? If you show me an actual proof that this happened, I'll believe you. But since there's no evidence of that...
Update (10/8/21):
About Hayley "hating" Emily: this was said a lot back in 2016 when Hayley said she didn't approve of Staron. That's literally her opinion, if she doesn't ship them that fine! She's entitled to her opinion, like everyone does. They’re not best friends, they get along. They made some videos together (back when there was a Dubmash war between the AOS and Agent Carter casts). Here's one.
Plus, Emily talking about Hayley when asked about not sharing the screen with her (minute 1:42).
I recently found this video in which a fan asked her about the jokes/comments she made about Sharon that got out of control on social media. She said she didn't know about that (by that time she deleted her twitter account, where both Sharon/Emily got so much hate) minute 24:05 onwards. She said she was joking of course, and recognized they were wrong!
Many people blame her because of all the hate Sharon and Emily got. I admit it: I didn’t like Sharon that much. But even with all those jokes Hayley made, I never thought about bullying neither Sharon nor Emily. The problem here are the toxic fans who took everything she said seriously and saw it as a chance to bully both Sharon and EVC. And if you’re one of those fans, you’re disgusting.
4. Hayley is homophobic. Oh yes, that's why she wanted Peggy to date Angie in Agent Carter (Source, minute 31:50). And also, how she approves of stucky.
Update (10/8/21):
Besides supporting the LGBT community on social media, she's once again showing support for Cartinelli and Peggy Carter being bisexual (a win for me btw)
May I add that Hayley supports the BLM movement not only on social media, (which many people including myself see it as performative activism in sooo many celebrities), but she actually went to protests in London last year, and kept posting about it + she allowed black activists and artists to post on her Instagram.
5. Hayley making fun of Chloe. Where the fuck is the source for that? Did you work for the cast of Agents of SHIELD to confirm that you witnessed that? Did Chloe say it? No. Don't make up bullshit.
Update (10/8/21):
So I found this post and I can’t believe how this person (please don’t bully them) has the nerve to accuse Hayley of saying “Daisy is not good enough woman to help Ward” and NOT PUTTING THE LINK OF THE VIDEO where (apparently) Hayley said that. Here’s the video, pay attention to Hayley’s answer. Literally, where does she say that? Stop taking things out of context, and stop making things up.
I understand if you don't like her jokes or humor, or even if you think that they are odd. But, honestly, what can we do about that? That how she is. She has bad things and good things, flaws and virtues. She might have commited mistakes, like EVERYONE ELSE HAS, because she's a HUMAN BEING. People change. Just like her, I'm not the same person I was a year ago. Even weeks ago. I'm not saying that you should love Hayley or Peggy from now on, all I'm trying to say is that instead of blindly believing everything you read on internet, try to take some of your time to search for evidence. Sorry if I seem to be angry, it's just that I'm tired of seeing so much hate on Hayley. It's not something I see just now, it's something I've been seeing since 2016. Leave her alone and stop spreading hate.
The Nonsense Fest
I feel like saying a few things more about the mess the showrunners deliberately decided to do to trasform their show in a joke. Francisco’s fans may like it as much as they want, because Carlos is dead, because Lidia has a family with Francisco now, but certainly that’s not the way you make a real and valid choice. It’s not a choice at all. Seriously, she doesn’t even say a word about Francisco. He's not in her thoughts. She doesn't make a comment to any of the girls about the life they have together. Anything about him. It's all about Sofia, Eva, and then Carlos. If this was their way to fix the things between them, at least they could have let her be more active and clear about her feelings. Being silent is not an equivalent of being clear. “A silence means yes” doesn't work on television. On television you show things.
Sure, we got the worst of the worst. The writers killed Carlos’s personality and then they killed him physically for the triangle. We lost our favorite man - without him, we lost everything - in order to change direction in the triangle. For fan service. Because Blanca Suarez and Yon Gonzalez are destined - poor them! - to end up together whatever they do, because El Internado made them destined. Dear Lord, what a migraine! But really, here the amount of disrespect for the story, for the characters, for the fans can’t even be described because they had the chance to keep everything good, to give respect to everyone and they decided not to because they went too far with Carlos and Lidia and they had absolutely no other way than turning him into a despicable person, not worthy of Lidia and their own daughter. Fail! BIG FAIL! That’s not how you do it! And guess what? I love him even more!
They started their nonsense in season 4 with the whole coma storyline, making Lidia a mute woman who can’t even talk anymore, she just plays the nurse 24/7 at the hospital, except when she plays “Agent Carter” with the girls, completely forgetting she has a daughter to take care of and a “husband” who adores her and would do anything for her. Including getting crazy. And that’s what they do to Carlos. They turn him into an insecure man because he’s not able to understand anymore who his “wife” is in love with, completely alone with his fears and insecurities. He goes insane at the idea Francisco doesn’t remember anyone but Alba. But excuse me, why is remembering Alba a threat? Wouldn’t it be the same if he remembered everything? What difference does it make if he remembers Alba and only Alba? Something that didn’t really have anything to do with Francisco, but only with Carlos. Francisco got amnesia, then in season 5 -voilà!- memories are back. It wasn’t even for his character, it was just for Carlos’s downfall. Yes, congratulations!!
Now, I would like to remember that Lidia breaks up with Carlos because he didn’t tell her about Francisco being awake. And then she leaves to protect Eva from Carmen. These are the reasons why Lidia leaves, not because she realizes that she’s sooo in lurve with Francisco. We know this from Blanca’s pov, too. It’s canon, it’s confirmed. Lidia had NO intention of leaving Carlos and the family they had. But my question is this: if they wanted to change the direction of the triangle, why didn’t they do it properly? They could have killed Carlos at the end of season 3 for example, heroically and in a beautiful way to save his only love and his precious little one, and then in season 4 they could have started re-building Lidia and Francisco the way a relationship is supposed to be written and built-up in order to be valid and believable. There was no proper build up at all. Francisco spent 5 episodes out of 8 in a bed, asleep. In the first part of season 1, they have 2 scenes together, but they have no substance at all. Lidia and Carlos still did the show like no others. And everything they did since season 4, about Lidia and Francisco, and the triangle stuff, is nothing but FORCED.
If there's something I'm kinda happy about is that in that necklace there was no picture of Francisco. The ones close to Lidia’s heart are Eva and Sofia. And that's it. That was satisfying because I already thought he was in there, too. So the only people she kept close to her heart are Eva,Sofia and Carlos. By the ring.
Also, if Eva asked about her REAL father all the time, it means that Lidia talked a lot about him to her, it means he was there in that house like an elephant in the room. And she looked for him, she wrote to him many letters, she wanted to keep in touch with him. Wether it was for Eva or other stuff, that was supposed to be said, because it's respectful towards the characters. They told us all about this, nothing about Francisco and Lidia as a couple, but then they completely wasted it. They didn’t use this material. And it was meant to be used because it’s what make the characters real. In character.
In season 2, when Lidia broke up with Carlos she never for once looked for Francisco. She kept keeping that ring close to her heart, pining for Carlos and the life she wanted with him. In season 5, despite her life in New York with Francisco, Lidia keeps asking for Carlos, keeps writing to him in order to get a word from him. For how long? She talked to Eva about him many times, so tell us more about this. You just can't drop it. It's a good premise. You can't just use it for Carlos’s pov and not for hers. For God's sake, she's the one that matters. She constantly talks about wounds, what wounds are you talking about, Lidia? Tell us, because it’s important to know. If she’s so happy with her “perfect” life in New York, what kind of wounds may she have about a man who broke her heart a long time ago, a man who doesn’t even know what love is, uh? Why are you so curious, Lidia? Why do you care, Lidia? Enough not to jump on that van and leave him there for your own salvation? Tell us!!
Anyway, to me all of this points out to Albisco NOT being endgame. It’s not that I really care about part 2, I just want to see Lidia’s reaction to Carlos’s death and I want Lidia to avenge Carlos and the person he was, because she saw once again the person he was. Not a “franquista”, not a despicable man. But a man who loved too much. However, Lidia has her daughters now. They are her endgame. Along with her friends. Eva has Carlos' genes. No matter what, he’ll live through her. The more she grows up, the more she'll look like him. And Lidia will always have her from him. The greatest gift he could give to her. And the other one, well, Carlos is the one who helped Lidia to get Sofia back, so he gave her that one, too. Metaphorically. Francisco may have helped her raise them for awhile, but not seen, not happened. And that’s the big difference between Lidia and Carlos and Alba (I refuse to call her Lidia) and Francisco. Lidia and Carlos made a story and showed it before our eyes, since the very beginning. We saw how they fell in love with each other, how they made each other feel when they were together, we saw them fighting in every way, for each other, for their future, even for being crazy fools in love with each other. We saw them creating a life together, fighting for their family, and breathing each day of their family. Step by step. We saw Lidia choosing Carlos again and again with Francisco there, we saw them at the aisle promising eternal love to each other. A team in every way. ‘Till the very end. Because even in his last hours, Carlos was Lidia’s strength, ‘cause she wouldn’t have been able to do anything without him. And she was his light, the only light he has ever known in his entire life. And you can’t find any of this between Francisco and Alba. 7 years together, in the same house, with two daughters, all of this off screen, and they’re not even married? Please! What are we talking about?
Some thoughts I have on Endgame after watching it twice so spoilers below..
.
.
.
.
.
No matter how devastated by it I'm still happy with Nat's story conclusion because she died fighting on the good side, I'm sure she knew her death wouldn't be for nothing because she believed in her family. She wanted to prove her heart was true and was so eager to change everything that's happened. Somehow I feel like she was most excited when they found out there is a way to reverse the snap and she'd do anything she had to, even to die for it.
Post time skip Thor was actually a good depiction of how PTSD can affect people. If it was up to me to stop the person who wants to kill half of the universe's population and I failed and knew it couldn't be reversed (or lived with that thought for 5 fcking years) I'd eat and drink myself to death. Fortnite was for humor and I agree it was unnecessary but we honestly needed all the laughs amongst the tears and anxiety and sorrow. But pls don't get me wrong, PTSD is fucking serious and should never be made fun of, I know that firsthand.
Steve staying back in the past, now this one.. This is the one that divides our fandom just like Tony's death but honestly, to each their own. Somewhere under the endgame spoilers tag I mentioned that after watching the movie for the second time there is something in Bucky's expression telling me he knew.. telling me that him and Steve had an off screen conversation about what Steve's planning on doing. Whether it was Steve asking for Bucky's opinion or just straight out saying "this is what I'm gonna do and you can't change my mind" Bucky has accepted it (or at least shows he did). The only surprise I see in Bucky is when he sees old Steve sitting in front of them but even then I felt like he knew Steve would come back because he tells Sam to go there as soon as he realizes it's Steve.
Steve handing the Cap mantle to Sam is in my opinion better than to Bucky because it suits Sam more and again they might've had an off screen conversation on that topic. Now, I'm sure Buck would be the first and probably the only person Steve would talk about this and I believe he asked Buck if he wants to take over. But for now this is all my speculation/what I choose to be canon for me until the Disney+ series come out and we hopefully find out what really went on.
From what we know about time travel in the film, Steve going back doesn't change the future because his future becomes his past. You really need to watch this movie more than once, I did and I still feel like I'm missing some points. Steve returned to all the points in time to bring back the stones in their place before separating the timeline by staying with Peggy. That means that the original future stays the same and Peggy still has her family and a successful job and Agent Carter storyline still happens the same way. Steve however chooses a timeline just for himself to be with the love of his life and kicks some Hydra ass and saves Bucky and maybe he even prevents the Snap knowing everything from the original timeline. It is cheating but cheating for the greater good and Steve is, to quote Ultron, "god's righteous man". The only thing I'm bothered by is his fling with Sharon because he keeps holding on to the compass with Peggy's picture but again no one should blame him for trying to move on after the love of his life dies. That is until he finds out there is a way to time travel. But yeah, it was weird because she is her niece.
Last thing on Steve returning, remember he took 4 pym particle thingys so two were used when him and Tony went back to present from 1970 and two were left. He probably kept them for himself knowing he'd return to the original timeline to give Sam the shield but I feel like this won't be explained so yet another speculation.
I've seen people discuss how they got the space stone back inside the Tesseract and the answer couldn't be simpler: same way they get it out. They knew they will have to return them after reversing the Snap so I'm 100% sure they didn't break the Tesseract like Thanos did in IW.
Tony's death was devastating but I think he knew it might be necessary and he even prepared to snap with the stones himself and built the gauntlet inside his suit. Don't forget that he uses nano tech and could easily transfer the stones from Stark gauntlet onto his suit in the right moment which he ultimately does. Pepper was right to say he can finally rest now, he spent so long trying to make Earth a safer place and he probably wouldn't ever stop because that's who Tony Stark is. This way he finally got to rest knowing the future of his family, his friends, the world and the universe is safe from Thanos - the greatest threat (for now). I'm happy he got at least 5 years to be with his family and he did deserve sooo much more being the person who he is but no matter how heartbreaking, we know and we we're told that every story has an ending and they are not all necessarily satisfying. The man says it himself.
Loki gives me hope with his disappearing ass along with the Tesseract. If we follow the movie's time travel rules, our blue icicle has a new timeline but I'm definitely missing Ragnarok Loki. I loveeeed him since the first Thor movie and was crushed when he died in IW, I even named my cat after him fuck. But with the Disney+ series I'm sure my heart will heal, all I need is more Loki in my life.
So Gamora is missing and I really can't wait to see how gotg3 plays out especially with Thor on board. He never felt like he should be the king and I'm happy Valkyrie is taking over and btw her Pegasus is everything and her scenes at the final battle were amazing.
Ok so after writing this I want to see the movie again and I've already seen it twice in less than 12 hours, it really is an epic for me and as a long time fan I'm happy and devastated with how everything turned out at the same time.
I keep repeating Tony's words from his funeral scene to console myself. We always have phases 1-3 to rewatch and remember how things were and I can't wait for new movies and tv shows but that doesn't mean I won't occasionally read an au fanfic or two just to imagine what things would be like if...
I am heartbroken and happy at the same time. At the same time I feel like a part of me died but I am also excited for new things, for new heroes following the legacy the originals have left for them.
I also want to note that the fandom is already so divided but we all have our own opinions and there's no point arguing and trying to implement our opinions to someone else when they clearly don't want to. I love a good discussion but if there are any straight up negative comments on this I will ignore them so no need to be *that* kind of a fan.
During the premiere's *purple* carpet event everyone kept saying that Marvel fans are the best fans so let's try to keep up with that. ❤️
Endgame review(ish) LOTS OF SPOILERS
I saw it 2 days ago but needed some time to wrap my head around this one. I have never described a movie as a masterpiece before but this definitely hits all my boxes.
What I liked/loved:
•Watching Thanos die twice in one movie was an honor and a damned privilege.
•Tony and Nebula having a friendship & Carol rescuing them
•Pepperony’s reunion ❤️
•After we jumped ahead 5 years and Scott gets reunited with teenage Cassie. That made me tear up. If they ever do another Ant Man movie it’ll be great to see Cassie old enough to have a bigger role
•Seeing Nat crying and showcasing how much Steve and her have such a great relationship plus Carol’s new bad ass ‘do.
•SEEING PEPPERONY’S NEW LIFE! MORGAN STARK! DAD TONY!
•Tony knowing in the end there’s no way he won’t help. It’s just not in his DNA and insisting nothing changes from the last 5 years
•Dad bod!Thor
•Fucking “Dr.” Hulk. Ffs, Bruce 🤣
•The whole going back in time deal. I’m a sucker for time travel and watching Scott get turned old/young and not knowing which one peed his pants, lmao, and Tony guessing right off the bat what happened
•The renewal of the Tony/Steve friendship and team. I missed the two of them being on good terms
• “Dr. Hulk” half heartedly trying to imitate his 2012 self destroying things. Again, for fuck SAKE, Bruce. 😂
•Cap saying “Hail Hydra” easter egg. Since all of us fans were sooo angry over them making Cap hydra in that comic. Steve being all smug as he walks out with the scepter. Tony having Scott give past!tony freaking arrythmia’s for a distraction then being all smug because he thinks he got away with it just to be mowed down by The Hulk who was angry he had to take the stairs & Tony teasing Steve about his ass and Scott admiring it. Same, dude. Same.
•The entire scene of Dr. Hulk going to get his stone
•Steve fighting himself. The whole thing was gold.
• “I can do this all day.” Annoyed future!steve “I know, I know” & “That really is America’s ass” And god bless that ass, my golden haired freedom baby.
•Steve and Tony teaming up and overruling Scott because damn do I miss Stony
•The entirety of Thor/Frigga & Tony/Howard
•MJOLNIR RETURNS
•Everyone finding out about Nat’s death and her mini funeral. Not that I “liked” it per say but I thought it was a beautifully acted scene on Scarlett’s part. Clint’s reaction had me bawling as well as everyone else. I’m not a Bruce/Natasha shipper at all but still. It was a very hard scene to sit through with the whole theater sniffling behind me since I was in the front row. (Side note: LOVED Natasha’s blond/red hair. It was really pretty on her)
•Dr. Hulk taking one for the team by wearing the infinity gauntlet. After Nat’s death I really think there may have been a small part of him that wouldn’t have minded joining her. I was happy to see him make it though
•Nebula getting through to past!Gamora and taking past!Neb down
•Tony finding Steve and calling him my guy” GOD DAMN DID I MISS THAT FRIENDSHIP
•Thor doing that lightening clothing transformation thing and having both weapons
•Everyone teaming up to kill Thanos (again)
•STEVE BEING WORTHY & SUMMONING LIGHTNING MY GODDDDD THAT WAS HOT (the entire theatre erupted in cheers when he was standing there with his shield and Mjolnir. The scene was even cooler in 3D) Thor smiling when he saw all this and saying “I knew it”
•Steve preparing to face Thanos and his whole army by himself and then all these portals pop up and IT’S EVERYONE. Again the entire theatre were on our feet clapping, cheering and laughing with joy the second the Wakandians came into view. Best. Scene. Ever.
•Pepper! In! A! Suit! Again!
•Peter and Tony’s reunion! Peter talking a mile a minute and Tony being so emotional he just hugged him. Fuck, man. Right in the feels indeed
•All female heroes teaming up
•Wanda being enraged at Thanos and his royal grape ness being scared of her power as well as Carol’s when she showed up
•The Entire fucking battle. The mini reunions. I could sit here and go on for ages about it. This battle scene pretty much was one of the best ones I’ve ever seen in any movie/tv show ever.
•Tony realizing what Dr. Strange meant when he said “if I told you what had to happen it wouldn’t happen” and the look that passed between them. Stephen looking at him with sorrow.
•Tony, knowing it was gonna kill him, putting the gauntlet on anyway.
•Again watching Thanos lose everything he loved to disintegration like our heroes did and realize he’s lost to the Avengers again then die himself. I don’t think I’ve ever hated a movie villain more than him to date.
•Tony’s death. At this point I was back to trying not to sob out loud in front of a bunch of strangers. Peter’s reaction is what got me going. Pepper’s as well as the rest of the OG Avengers who had been with Tony the longest. Rhodey crying and pulling Peter away. Just writing this now I’ve got tears in my eyes.
•Pepper telling Tony it was okay to go and she and Morgan would be fine
•The funeral. The grown up kid from Iron Man 3 being there. Aunt May and Peter. Sending that wreath out onto the lake. It was a stunning scene. Happy talking to Morgan.
• “I love you 3000”
•Old man!Steve. Look, I do not care what plot holes it creates. This movie was too well done to let stupid technicalities bug me. As a loooong time Steggy shipper I’m so happy he got to live where he wanted to live back in the 40’s with the love of his life. I’m thrilled Peggy got the love of hers. I don’t care that it destroys the Agent Carter show. It got canceled anyway so I just do not care. Nor do I care about whoever Peggy’s husband ended up being (it was Daniel from AC, I think) getting erased. The two of them pined for each other for so long I think it was beautifully done in the end. I wish we’d gotten to know how many kids Steggy had but 🤷♀️. Bucky was still Bucky. No, Steve didn’t kiss his niece if you listened to Bruce’s explanation but people are being stupidly stubborn on that bit. Steve has been my ride or die hero since his original movie in the MCU. I was terrified he was gonna die in sacrifice. I hate, HATE that it was Tony but I’m a little relieved at the same time, I won’t lie. I’d like to think Steve and Peggy were around for baby!tony. Maybe they were Aunt Peggy and Uncle Steve to him.
•Scott, Hope and Cassie mini family
•Clint happily reuniting with his family
•Ned and Peter reuniting
•SAM! BEING! PASSED! THE! CAPTAIN! AMERICA! MANTLE! I cannot wait for Bucky & Sam’s tv series.
•The film closing out with dancing Steve and Peggy happily in love.
What I did not like/hated:
•Loki surviving. I just hate him. Obviously he was going to given he is getting his own show too but Christ on a cracker
•Both Tony and Natasha’s deaths. I know why they happened but it still really really sucks to lose any of the team for any reason. Seeing the Tony stans super upset has been very hard even if we all knew it was gonna be Steve or Tony dying. It’s one thing to know it and then another to actually see it play out
•Clint’s family dissolving? 😭😭 Yes, we knew it was gonna happen but watching it suuuucked
•Not showing the Aunt May/Peter reunion. She had to live 5 years without him after all.
•Not getting to see Carol and Nick interact or reunite.
•Not getting to see Maria’s reaction to Natasha’s death (I know there was only so much time and these reunions are just splitting hairs but I would have liked to see them)
•Not enough Pepperony!Parents scenes. (Again, splitting hairs here, lol)
Over all:
A++++++++
I didn’t go into this movie with expectations in case it was a disappointment. Needless to say it was NOT a disappointment in the least. It was a beautifully done film. The cinematography was stunning. I laughed, cheered, was kept in suspense and definitely cried. Which is not easy to get me to do. I will miss Tony and Pepperony every day but I also cannot wait to see Wanda get Vision back in their series. However that happens nor the Bucky/Sam team up. I think I hit all the major points (I hope). I intend to go see the movie again next week. The Russo Brothers did a wonderful job honoring 11 years worth of movies and the fans who have been here since 2008. A lot is storylines were paid off and the like. Just amazing. Thank you for reading this long word vomit.
In the air part one
Fandom: Torchwood. Trigger warnings: None I don't think but tell me if I've missed anything. Characters: Owen Harper, Toshiko Sato, Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones, Gwen Cooper, Elise Carter (oc) Rating: Teen and up
Blurb: A relaxed wedding dress fitting turns into a new case for the team as the streets are suddenly abandoned.
“How does your leg feel?” Asked Owen as he pulled on his gloves.
Elise shrugged and pulled up the side of her skirt to show her bandaged thigh. “Sore as hell, but no more than I’d expect. How long until I can put weight on it properly?”
“You were lucky, it didn’t hit the bone or any major blood vessels so you can maybe put your full weight on it again in a week or so. I was more worried about the chance of infection.”
“I tried to keep it away from the mud.”
“You did pretty well, but gunshot wounds are a bitch. Even clean shots that are treated immediately can get infected and that’s how you end up in surgery.” He removed the bandage and dressing as gently as he could, happy that the wound looked clean.
“How is it?”
“Your leg’s going to drop off.”
She rolled her eyes. “Asshat.”
“It’ll be fine, just keep it clean and dry. I’ll redress it for you this time.”
“Thanks. How are you?”
“Me? There’s nothing wrong with me.”
“A guy almost killed you.”
“And you shot him in the hip. Keep still.” He continued treating her thigh, knowing that it must be hurting. “It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had a gun pointed at me.”
“That’s scary in itself.”
“Tosh said your watch was broken.”
“I’ll fix it after we’re done here.” She took it from her wrist, turning it over in her hands. “The casing and screen look fine. The fall probably just knocked a wire out of place.”
“I didn’t think you’d still need it.”
A short silence filled the room, neither party wanting to speak about her missing friend.
“I’m still going to have the dreams or whatever they are. My weirdness isn’t completely gone.”
“You sound sure of that.”
“I am. Time travel comes at a price. I’m ok with that.”
He looked up from his work. “You think you can still time jump?”
“Only twenty four hours either way, at most, but it’s something. I don’t know the distance I can go yet.”
“You shouldn’t use it. You don’t have someone who knows how to control it anymore.” Owen had never looked more serious in his life. “Just let it go and be human for a while.”
“Are you worried about me?”
“Of course I am!” He snapped, throwing his gloves into the bin.
Elise sat up and reached out for his arm. “Owen… I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to …”
“Just leave it... You’re going to be on desk duty for a while. You’ve got to write up your report about the Pharm anyway.”
“Owen… When I’m all healed up would you mind training me to be a proper field agent?”
“Me? You realise I’m the Hub fuck up. You might want to go to Jack for that.” He smirked.
“You’re reckless, stubborn and trigger happy... but that’s what makes you good at what you do. I know I run into things and just say fuck it to the risks but I wouldn’t even be here if I didn’t.”
“We’ll talk about it once you’re healed, for now you’ve got paperwork to do. And tell Tosh her girlfriend’s crazy.”
“Will do.” She smiled.
Ianto placed Elise’s morning coffee on her desk. “I hope you’re going to be better than Owen was on desk duty.”
“Oh?”
“Have you ever seen the shining?”
“Really? That bad?”
“Luckily an axe won’t put a dent on most of the doors here. It only ended when he cut the cast off his leg and told us that if he didn’t go out soon he’d start posing bodies around the Hub out of boredom. I believed him.”
She laughed into her mug. “I promise I won’t go posing bodies around the place.”
“If you want to get some fresh air tomorrow I’ve got a wedding dress fitting to get to. You can come along if you like. You’ll probably do a lot of sitting around but it’s better than being stuck here.” Smiled Gwen, finally able to think about her wedding in the quiet moment.
“Thanks. That sounds fun. I’ve never even seen a wedding dress in real life before.”
Both Ianto and Gwen looked a little shocked.
“What? I’ve never been to a wedding and we didn’t have a bridal wear shop anywhere near where I lived.”
Gwens look softened, returning to her previous excitement. “You are going to have so much fun. I’ve got some cake samples to pick up too.”
“What makes wedding cake different than other cake? I know it’s fancier but what makes it specifically a wedding cake?”
“Normal cake goes off after a week. Wedding cake seems to last forever and can be used to build bomb shelters.” Ianto said drily before returning to his duties with a smile.
“Oh, don’t listen to him. It’s mostly just because it’s fancy but I really want it to actually be edible.”
“How is Rhys?”
“He’s fine. Taking everything in his stride as per usual. He’s not as paranoid now he knows what I actually do.”
“That’s fair.”
“Though I think he’s still a bit iffy with Jack.”
“Also fair. I don’t think he knows the difference between casual conversation and flirting.”
“Sooo, how’s things between you and Tosh?”
“Good. Really good.”
“She does seem so much happier than before. It’s nice.”
After a very entertaining dress fitting that reminded Gwen that she needed to eat even if she was stressed they headed out. Elise being a little slow as she moved with one crutch. On the street it seemed eerily silent. As it was lunch time it should have been bustling but only the birds made a noise. Workers from the surrounding shops looked out of their windows, just as confused. Gwens police instincts kicked in when she saw a car with its doors left open, shopping bags left abandoned in the road.
“Wait here. I’ll be right back.” Said Gwen before rushing across the road to one of the opposing shops to talk to one of the staff. They seemed in shock.
“What happened out there?” She asked, trying to seem like just any other person walking onto the scene.
The worker, a young man who wore a lanyard around his neck emblazoned with the stores name, just shook his head. “I… I don’t know. Everyone just started walking down the street. All at once… They just turned and walked off like zombies.”
“Did you hear anything strange? See anything?”
“No. I was putting the new posters up in the window and it was like someone flicked a switch… Is it one of those flash mob things do you think?”
“No idea… Thanks.” She returned to Elise who was leaning on the bridal stores wall.
“He see anything?”
“Apparently everyone just turned and walked off down the street.”
“Should we follow?”
“Get in the car. We can call it in on the way.”
Elise took her phone from her pocket and got into the car, dialling into the comms line for the Hub.
“Having fun ladies?” Jacks voice rose from the device.
“Having a blast, just a quick question, is the rift doing it’s happy dance?” Elise asked.
“We’ve had a few spikes, why?”
“Well, everyone on the street got pied pipered a few minutes ago.”
“Any idea where they’re heading?”
“We’re following now.”
“Don’t get too close. We’re on our way.” He hung up the call.
Ahead of the car a large crowd walked in unison, seemingly in a trance. Gwen repeatedly pressed the horn but they didn’t even flinch. She parked up to the side and took her comms earpiece from the glove compartment.
“Wait here. I’m going up ahead.” She said, not waiting for a response.
Elise opened her door and pulled herself out. “You shouldn’t go alone.”
“I’ll be fine. I’m just going to look.” She rushed off ahead of the entranced people.
They all seemed to be converging on a car park outside a large garden centre. Due to it being closed that day there were no cars but as Gwen managed to push her way through the sea of people she saw where they were all going. A large sinkhole had formed, dropping into darkness. The people around her stood around the edge, unmoving. No matter what she did she couldn’t wake anyone.
As sudden as it had began, it ended. All at once people began looking around, confused before a panic broke out at being that close to the edge of the sinkhole. People scattered in all directions and Gwen had to admit she was a little thankful for being on the inside so she didn’t get trampled.
Jack looked over the edge of the now sixteen foot wide sinkhole, light hitting a perfectly flat obsidian surface below. The whole car park had been cordoned off with temporary plywood walls, usually used to keep people out of construction sites, much to the displeasure of the Garden centres manager.
“At least it’s stopped.” Jack turned away from the hole. “What do we know?”
“Fuck all.” Owen began.
Tosh interjected, “Noone remembers anything. One moment they were in one place and then they woke up here. Though whatever it was didn’t seem to affect anyone in a building when it started. There was a spike in rift energy but nothing big enough for this.”
“How far did it span?” The captain stepped away from the edge.
“A mile radius of the holes centre.”
“Sounds like we’re going to have to get down there.” He picked up a nearby rock and tossed it into the hole. It landed with a light tap and skittered across the obsidian surface as if it were ice.
Ianto and Elise had been sent to speak to the Garden centre manager and sat in the womans sparse office.
“This is all I need. This whole place has been falling apart since last Sunday.”
“Falling apart?” Asked Ianto, keeping detailed notes as the woman had spoken chaotically before and it was easier to keep up with what she was on about in bullet points.
“Yes! First every last fuse in this place blew. Even the ones in the plugs. Then my staff start calling in sick. They didn’t sound bloody sick. Then we had a new palette of apple tree saplings just shrivel and rot overnight for no reason. Same day we had a flock of pigeons slam themselves into the building in the middle of the bloody day. We had kids screaming and crying and noone wanted to clean that mess up. Then! As if it couldn’t get worse the water has to be turned off because some bloody thing’s in it. Do you know how much water a garden centre needs to keep running?!”
“Ma’am… Can we see the water please? And the apple trees if you still have them.”
“As long as you get that sinkhole filled in you can do what you like.”
“Well, if you could show my colleague here I can gather my things to get some samples.”
“Yes. Yes. Maybe you’ll get more than that useless plumber did.”
The manageress lead them down to the main warehouse and Ianto quickly walked back to the SUV to grab some gloves and sample jars. When he returned the manager was still complaining at Elise.
“It’s everywhere in the building and god the smell!”
“I’m sure we’ll find the source ma’am.” Elise droned, barely paying attention.
“Oh good, you’re back. Here.” The woman turned the tap and a black, oily looking liquid started pouring out. Ianto had just taken the sample when the smell hit them. It stank like rancid meat with a heavy tint of iron. The manageress ran off to throw up in one of the bins.
Elise turned off the tap. “Jesus. Did something die in their water tank?”
“They don’t have a water tank. This is from the mains.” He held the small plastic jar up to the light but even the relatively bright sunshine couldn’t permeate the liquid.
“I don’t now if it’s the water or the bigass hole out there but this place gives me the creeps.”
He had to admit the place, though otherwise completely mundane, did make him nervous. A creeping dread that rose up his spine and made him want to jump at every sound. He looked around for the dead saplings as the manageress was still hunched over a bin. In the corner of the warehouse, nearest the loading bay, sat a palate of potted saplings. Each was withered and mould had started to develop on the surface of the soil. Using a set of clippers and a hand trowel he took samples from one of the pots, the same smell that came from the tainted water oozed from the cuts on the plant. Ianto stood back as his stomach turned.
Elise made her way over to the exhausted looking manageress. “We’ve got what we need. We’ll contact you as soon as we know more. Why don’t you head home. It’s not safe to work around tainted water.”
The poor woman nodded.
Outside, Ianto took a deep breath, appreciating the fresh air. He still couldn’t shake the nervous feeling.
“You feel as out of sorts as I do?” Asked Elise, sitting in the back seat of the SUV with her arm over her eyes.
“Do you think it was the water?”
“We didn’t even touch it.”
Ianto paused before an idea came to mind. He leaned over to one of the computers, setting up a sound sensor to monitor all frequencies.
Elise pulled her arm away from her eyes. “What’s up?”
He looked over the levels on the screen. “Infrasound.”
“Huh?”
“It’s very low frequency sound, anything below 20Hz. Not audible by humans. It’s usually used for underground monitoring because it doesn’t disperse the way higher frequencies do. It can cause nausea, paranoia, nervousness and in the worst cases, hallucinations. A lot of ghost sightings come from it.”
“Is that why we feel like crap?”
“Looks that way. It doesn’t explain the water though.”
“Do you think that’s what made the birds dive into the building?”
“Maybe but I don’t think so. It can mess with their directional mapping but it doesn’t make whole flocks suicidal… I’m going to go and tell the others.”
“I’m gonna stay here and rest.” She put her arm back over her eyes. “So much for desk duty, eh?”
Owen stepped down onto the obsidian surface, double checking his safety line just in case it collapsed. Jack had already ventured down into the sinkhole but Owen had been fooled before by Jacks oddly catlike grace. The sinkhole was unusual in that the walls didn’t have any kind of overhang. It had fallen away and left what looked like carved walls of earth. Walking across the glasslike surface it became clear that whatever it might be was hollow.
“Can you see any sign of a hatch?” He asked, finding it hard to focus his vision on the light absorbing stone.
“Not a thing.” The captain crouched down, running his fingers over the surface, hoping to feel more than he could see. He suddenly pulled back, a sharp pain shooting through his fingertips. A thin line of blood dripped from each finger and down onto the floor where it was absorbed. A loud rumbling filled the area and Jack turned to run back to the ladder.
“Out now!” He ordered.
Owen did not need telling twice, clambering up like a frightened ape. As soon as his feet were on secure earth he turned to make sure Jack was right behind him. The previously flat surface was becoming an upside down pyramid made of many steps. Starting at the centre each layer descended, threatening to pull Jack down to what he guessed would be a very nasty, if temporary, death. He reached out and grabbed the ladder that was thankfully secured from above and wrenched himself up. His cut fingers sliding but thankfully not dropping him. Ianto and Owen took a wrist each and pulled him up and out of the sinkhole.
“The fuck was that?!” Asked Owen, looking back at where he’d been standing.
Jack looked down at his hand, at the paper fine cuts that decorated his fingertips.
Owen took a swift trip back to the hub with Elise, wanting to test the samples that Ianto had gathered. He could only do a certain amount in the field and the this had stopped being an oddity and started being a very dangerous case.
The ‘water’ sample showed traces of blood, grey matter and microscopic bone fragments, all slowly rotting. The blood, though decomposing and tainted did present as a mix of human and animal. The apple tree sapling cuttings were rotten on the outside but the very centre showed new growth, soaking up the tainted water from its soil. Even the mould sitting on the surface of the soil showed signs of death and regrowth.
“The thing is drinking people?” Asked Elise from a safe distance.
“It looks more like the liquid’s being pumped into the plant to change it.”
“That still sounds like a vampire plant.”
Owen suddenly stepped back from his work, switching on his comms awkwardly with his shoulder. “You all need to get away from there. It needs to be quarantined. Everything that’s been tainted already needs to be quarantined too. That includes you Harkness!” He turned to Elise. “Did you touch anything?”
“No. Ianto took the samples and he was wearing gloves. But the garden centre staff did.”
“Shit! Get a list of their staff. They need to be isolated. Call it a possible biological weapon. We’ve got a building we can use as a hospital. I need to know how many people have already been infected.”
When Torchwood is in a full outbreak alert they work shockingly quickly. They’d already rounded up many of the staff and they did not look healthy. Owen tested himself for infection before the others even got back and after a very fast decontamination shower he pulled on a hazmat suit and got to work on his team. Elise, Ianto, Tosh and Gwen were all clean and had to go through the same process. Jack was not so lucky. His fingertips were already showing signs of infection. Owen suspected it was working faster on him as it had infected his blood directly.
He was taken to the ‘hospital’ and given a room, not arguing as he knew Owen wouldn’t do all this without a very serious reason.
“Owen, what’s this going to do to me?” he asked, no longer able to move his hand.
“It kills its host and then brings them back with that meat sludge in the pipes. Maybe your body will be able to fight it off but…”
“It’s ok. I understand. I’m leaving this up to you.”
Owen replied with a nod and Jack resigned himself to staying where he was. The infection was spreading too fast for him to fight and he just hoped that when he came back it would be gone. He lay down and tried not to think about the burning sensation rising up his arm. At least Owen would have a test subject. Owen leant on the wall outside of the room, reflecting on what a disaster this had all become. He hated the idea but he might have to call in UNIT for help. No, not yet. They might try and blow up the obsidian structure and spread it even further. He needed to know what would happen to a mammal at the point of death and he hated the idea of using Jack.
Gwen watched the infected rat plod lethargically around its tank. She felt so sorry for the creature that was obviously in pain, its tail blackened and bone exposed. If it hadn’t been a pandemic level issue even Owen may have put it down by this point. The rodent stopped and fell onto its side.
“Owen... “
He’d asked her to call him at the moment the animal passed. Under the hazmat suit he looked haggard, trying to keep all of his patients from rioting out of fear. A screen next to the tank showed that the rats heart and brain function had stopped. It was then that it twitched.
Gwen jumped at the movement but even she knew that random electrical signals can do that to a body just after death. What didn’t usually happen was the body getting back onto its feet. The dead rat moved to the side of the tank, testing where it was before backing up and ramming the side. The tank was undamaged but the creature continued trying to ram into the side. Owen signaled for Gwen to move to the other side of the table with him. The rat changed its trajectory. It was actively trying to get to them.
“It’s a... “ Gwen began.
“Don’t say it… Make sure anyone that gets too far gone is restrained out there.”
Twenty hours had passed since the people out in the street had been drawn to the sinkhole and the virus was mostly contained but as Tosh looked up from her power nap her stomach dropped. The tv she’d left on for some white noise played a news report. It was happening again and this time people were carrying meat and livestock towards the obsidian pit. The entranced people crashed through the cordon as if it weren’t even there and lead the animals onto the steps. Each edge seem to slice through the creatures like a knife. Those caught under its spell were feeding it. She shot up to report what the news had been showing, rushing past Jacks room. She stopped for a moment and looked over at the captain. He was pale, hunched over and holding his head.
“Jack?”
He looked up with unfocused eyes, agony etched into his face. “Calling… It’s calling… Won’t stop…”
“The pit?” She dared take a step into the room.
“It wants food… powers it… Machine… Controls… us.”
“It’s a machine? What does it do? Jack?” Another step closer.
“Heart… It... a heart…”
Another step. She was pulled sharply back by Ianto as Jack lunged for her. He pulled her out of the room and locked Jack inside. Jack roared and slammed his fists against the door, unable to fight the infection any longer.
“I heard him too. Come on.” Ianto said, finally releasing his grip on his coworker.
They ran to report what they’d been told and Jacks condition, trying to think of some way to end all this.
Ianto and Gwen pulled on their body armor and respirators before heading towards the pit. Covered head to toe in kevlar they moved towards the centre, diamond bladed saw in hand. Sparks shot into the air as the saw cut into the stone. In retaliation the pit began to rise and flatten itself out again as if that would protect it from the blade. The chunk of rock finally fell through, landing with an earth shattering boom. No going back, they descended into the structure.
The walls were smooth and as black as the exposed part had been but the floor was white, like bone. Red veins pulsed around the edges of the floor. They followed the crimson vessels deeper, finding that the smooth walls gave way to what looked like cogs, grinding dryly. Any oil having long dried up. The further they walked the more machinery clanged and screeched, louder by the moment. Many of the vessels began to converge and wind together like muscles, pulsing. Even through the respirator Ianto felt like he could smell that rancid stench that had attacked his senses from the tap.
The bundles of vessels lead into a final, huge chamber. Its walls were slick and crimson, the vessels emptying down them like a fountain. Below the pools churned and bubbled. Finally in the centre, held up like a marionette was a figure. It stood over nine feet tall and its leathery skin clung tightly to its horribly emaciated form. It looked as if it had been dead for centuries until it opened its eyes, blind and milky. It began to move with a horrible creaking and a familiar grinding from its ribcage, the pools of blood being drawn towards it. The metal tubes that snaked into its head rattled and groaned.
Back at the hospital all had gone silent but only for a moment. Every one of the infected began shrieking and trying to fight their restraints, all facing in the direction of the pit. It was so loud that Owen feared some may destroy their own vocal chords. He could just hear the awful noise of joints dislocating, under the screams, as the patients pulled their restraints with no concern for their own wellbeing.
Gwen and Ianto aimed at the huge creatures head. It looked around as if something or someone should have been running to its aid but it found itself abandoned. Both agents fired at once, each bullet leaving a perfect hole through its head that poured out more of the rotten viscera. It thrashed, only succeeding in pulling the wires that held it up from its skin, before finally falling limp. Still the cogs moved. Ianto pointed up to the creatures chest that still clanked and werred. Gwen stepped forward and gritted her teeth before grabbing onto the skin of the hanging figures abdomen, pulling as hard as she could. The membrane tore away to reveal more gears, mummified flesh still stuck to the metal. In the very centre an obsidian core sat, turning slowly.
She moved out of the way as a very angry Ianto revved up the saw, lifting it up and pushing it as hard as he could into the core. It sparked in a shower of red and white before everything fell still.
The hospital was suddenly silent, all movement stopped and Owen hoped beyond hope that whatever had happened hadn’t killed every one of the people under his care. He was almost relieved when he heard the garden centre manageress gasping and sobbing as she looked at her dislocated wrist.
After hours spent sending people either home or to local hospitals Owen unlocked Jacks room. He looked his usual self, seemingly napping quite happily. He opened one clear blue eye and smiled.
“I think I broke the door.” He pointed to a fist sized hole in the door.
“You’re feeling better then.”
“I don’t remember anything after climbing into that sinkhole. Usually when that happens there’s alcohol involved and I don’t wake up alone.”
Gwen and Ianto got back to the hub and immediately headed to shower. Their clothing, hair and even shoes stank of rot. They both felt like there wasn’t enough soap in the world to wash it away but it was worth a try. They were separated by a wall but sound travelled well in the tiled room.
“I could sleep for days after this.” Gwen said as she ran shampoo through her hair for the third time.
“That’s the plan. My shoulders are killing me.”
“Well you did hold that saw over your head.”
“I was annoyed.”
“Remind me to never annoy you.”
The Hub was quiet for the next three days while everyone recovered from their exhaustion. The pit was filled with concrete and paved over and life went on as if nothing had happened. That was always their best case scenario. Forgotten. A myth.
Inside the Hub was different. No one was ever really forgotten, especially when their leaving happened to coincide with an injury. Elise sighed to herself, feeling the bandage around her thigh through her trousers. The quiet in her mind had become more noticeable as the days passed and it left a dark fog in its wake. She missed their quiet conversations and always having someone there. She couldn’t let herself dwell on the matter, she had to let it go.
She stood and stretched, able to stand and limp around without her crutch, at least for a little while.
“Have you read it yet?” Asked Jack, leaning on her desk.
“Read what?”
“The letter that was left for you.”
She shook her head and sat back down in her chair. “I can’t even look at it right now. I copied it onto my own computer, my phone, a USB stick so I could whenever but… Not yet. I will, but not yet.”
“You should. It might help you.” Jack looked behind her as Owen placed his hands on her shoulders.
“Mind if I borrow this?” He asked as she jumped in surprise.
“As long as you bring her back in one piece.”
Jack took his leave.
Elise turned to look at Owen. “What do you need?”
“You looked uncomfortable and I’m bored.”
She laughed softly.
“Come on, I don’t want your aim getting rusty if I’m going to be the one blamed for training you. You should be fine standing for a bit.”
“Sounds good.” She stood and slowly limped after him.
“And when you’re healed up we need to work on your running speed.”
“I’m not that slow.”
“Tosh can run faster than you in high heels and a skirt. Yea, you are.”
“It’s not my fault that you’re all related to sodding racehorses.”
“Up your game Carter.”
“Don’t use my words.” She slapped his arm playfully.
Reacting to Supergirl: “Resist”
Cat Grant Has Never Sat in an Alley in Her Fabulous Life
The Setup: Kris and Miri love Supergirl. And all of us here at Reacting to Something believe in being critical of the media you love. Expect plenty of both those things in our gif-iest Reaction yet (#sorrynotsorry it’s NOT OUR FAULT they cast people with THESE FACES).
As always, post-chat annotations are in italics, and you can click on our names up here to get a sense of where we’re coming from as both writers and reactors.
KRIS: Ready whenever you are
MIRI: Ready!
KRIS: It’s a little fresher for you (but I’m hopping back through it now) -- first impressions?
MIRI: FEELINGS
many of them
I watched the last two eps back to back, so I’m probably going to mix up what happened when a bit
I like it
*liked
I liked getting to see Cat Grant again, obviously
KRIS: Yes
MIRI: I’m glad the payoff for President Lynda Carter being an alien wasn’t She’s a Secret Bad Guy!!
KRIS: “At least tell me you’re still a Democrat”
MIRI: Hahahahah
Shall we get right into the politics?
KRIS: We’ll definitely have to find a gif or photoset of Cat’s stoner recollections
MIRI: YES
KRIS: Sure let’s do it
MIRI: Overall I liked them
I don’t know if Supergirl always hits the marks on some of their political statements
KRIS: Cat’s big return speech was a little rough for me
MIRI: Such as the accidentally painful “Can’t believe anyone voted for the other guy” line right after the election
And the whole Girl Power speech in the pilot
I very much agree about the return speech
BUT overall I thought it worked this time
KRIS: It was silly in a gender essentialist way, though I guess I do buy that from Cat
MIRI: Agreed
And I think you were the one to point out early last season that some of the reason the feminism is so bite sized consumable may be for the benefit of a younger audience, which I think should be considered
The whole ‘we will get this done because that’s what we do’ thing worked for me, and the line about the Future is Female t-shirt
KRIS: For me there was an unfortunate (and I’m sure completely unintentional) Trump parallel when Cat was like “I can talk down these celebrities so I bet we can also make peace between our warring peoples”
MIRI: Shit, that’s a good/gross point
Didn’t even think about that
Unfortunate
Cat’s later speech that was sooo clearly anti Trump tickled me.
KRIS: Although again I guess I could buy that sort of thing from Cat
I did like that one
MIRI: How did you feel about the episode title?
M: I knew I’d screw up which ep we were talking about at some point--I meant “Nevertheless She Persisted” when I asked this question. Kris responded as if I had asked about the episode we were actually discussing at the time, “Resist.”
KRIS: Hmm
Let’s say I found it on-brand
Didn’t hate it
MIRI: Say more
KRIS: Wouldn’t have missed it if they’d gone less on-the-nose, but it’s a look Supergirl can pull off
MIRI: I’d agree with both points
KRIS: (Watching Cat’s first speech now and I do like her criticizing Rhea’s tiara)
(felt the right kind of Cat pettiness)
MIRI: I think I’m inclined to be a little generous with their political attempts because I know somewhat where Melissa Benoist’s opinions fall
KRIS: I do wonder how anyone on Air Force One expected that call to end?
MIRI: Which is not really a fair way to judge things, but oh well
KRIS: The look on Cat’s face when Rhea cuts off the call does not say “I planned for this”
MIRI: Yeah, there was no good outcome there, and I don’t entirely buy that they thought there would be
Also, the show kind of glosses over the presumed deaths of everyone else on that plane
KRIS: Yeah, in a world where Supergirl had a higher budget I would have loved a version of the Iron Man 3 rescue, which is my favorite superhero set piece of the last decade
K: Maybe ever. For me the only other real contender is the space shuttle/airplane rescue in Superman Returns. But what’s so great about IM3 is the group effort. They get to help save each other! Tony needs them as much as they need him! Plus those are real skydivers! Doing a real skydive!
MIRI: Exactly
KRIS: But anyway yeah, on balance I’m pretty good with our network superhero dramas going political
I don’t think you’re caught up on SHIELD but I’m sure you’ve heard their last arc this season was great on many levels
MIRI: Yeah, I think it’s working more than it isn’t
I actually haven’t heard much about it! Can you give me the broad strokes?
AGENTS OF SHIELD SPOILERS BEGIN HERE
.
.
.
KRIS: Most All of the regulars get stuck in a really really advanced VR simulation where Melinda May never killed the Inhuman girl in Bahrain
MIRI: Whoa
KRIS: which results in a horrific Stateside massacre, and the rise of Hydra in place of SHIELD
Only Daisy and Jemma go in in their right minds, and they have to win everyone over
K: May and Fitz are both in Hydra leadership and it’s very upsetting
M: WHAT???!?!?!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
MIRI: Noo we have too many Nazis in real life, I don’t want any more fictional ones
KRIS: The Inhumans are used as a rough parallel for immigration
MIRI: (at least Shield admits that they are Nazis)
Oh, that sounds effective
KRIS: Yeah, there’s a part where Coulson (as a brainwashed schoolteacher) corrects a student by saying “but Hydra’s been around for centuries, they can’t be Nazis”
and later Jemma tells that kid “They’re all Nazis, every single one of them, don’t let anyone tell you different”
MIRI: 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
KRIS: There’s also a Plausible Redemption of Grant Ward (to borrow one of your hashtags) because the simulation’s version was trained by Victoria Hand instead of Garrett
.
.
.
AGENTS OF SHIELD SPOILERS END HERE
Anyway back to Supergirl
Sorry readers
We like all of the superhero things
MIRI: Sorry not sorry
Wonder Woman reaction coming soon!
KRIS: You know who’s great? Katie McGrath.
MIRI: Katie McGrath is excellent!
I really liked her an Chris Wood (this is Mon-El’s name, yes??) playing off each other
KRIS: Yeah, that was fun
K: They’re such an interesting pair. I suspect Wood works harder than most of us can tell, but it can often seem like all he's asked to do is just kind of show up and be Charming. Whereas McGrath is like, so clearly Such a Good Actor -- one of the very best on the show, I think -- without the performance feeling like #ACTING. And she can really work a close-up. She almost doesn’t need dialogue to convey everything Lena thinks and feels. Some of this is that Lena’s a much richer character than Mon-El, and some of it is that dialogue has never been a particular strength of this show anyway, but still. Damn.
MIRI: And she does nobly wounded SO well
KRIS: Excellent description
I also enjoyed that Lena and Mon-El had no interpersonal baggage
MIRI: Agreed
KRIS: We’re suckers for mutual respect and affection, contra lots of our screenwriting training
MIRI: hahahahahahhaa
That is very true
Ok, I liked the Lena and Mama Luthor stuff
KRIS: But this scene I’m watching now of Alex being the Good Soldier is a good way to give the A-story a conflict between two of our leads
Oh yeah, that honestly worked better than I might’ve expected
MIRI: And I have to admit that I like that it’s not a dude with father issues. Dear everyone: if you just have women in your stories you can reuse so much crap and have it feel fresh! Same with queer people and POC!
Yes, let’s talk more about Alex!
And not just because I love Alex
KRIS: Alex jumping off a balcony
MIRI: I do love Alex
YEs!
I love that they have a plan for that
Her hesitating to use the weapon was very well played
KRIS: I think we agree with the rough critical consensus that Alex has been the highlight of the season
MIRI: Accurate
Chyler Leigh and her eyes can pull off just about anything
KRIS: I’ve been really impressed with how both Alex and Kara have had arcs involving their rebellions against authority and/or rules that end with them being something other than just The Loose Cannon Who Is Correct
K: You’ll learn a lot about My Least Favorite Tropes today, dear reader
Alex’s poor interrogation techniques
Alex’s blind trust of her father
They weren’t just played as “Alex is Right, Root for Alex!”
which I would have expected in the season 1 version of this show
MIRI: very true, and too rare in a lot of superhero/law enforcement media
KRIS: Or most network shows
YES
MIRI: Sidebar: Alex’s interrogation techniques are Extreme Violence and sharing hamburgers with no in between
Which is not ok
KRIS: (I’ve also enjoyed this about Skye/Daisy over the years but again I digress)
MIRI: But is also great and so her
KRIS: Yeah
I guess it’s worked in part because J’onn has been so well established as Space Dad
MIRI: I ❤️ Space Dad!
KRIS: Basically every conflict between series regulars ends up being pretty fair-handed because they’ve given everyone space to develop
MIRI: Yes, it was a nicely plotted last ep (or last 2 eps)
KRIS: And not fair-handed in a False Middle Road kind of way, but in an Everyone Means Well kind of way even if one of them is more wrong than the other
K: Caroline Siede has written a lot this season about both the virtues and the drawbacks of how Supergirl has fleshed out its non-Kara characters. What I was trying to get at here was that J’onn, for example, because he’s gotten B-stories and even an A-story or two of his own, is immediately easy to empathize with even when he does something like disguise himself as Alex’s dad to bait her into admitting her willingness to defy her orders. (He was right, incidentally, and like Allison Shoemaker I feel strongly that he should not have apologized.) Maggie in “Alex” is another strong example of someone other than Kara or Alex getting to be right for most of the episode. Even Snapper, in “Exodus,” though that was less about affection for the character and more about the writers generally being better at these dynamics, I think, than Arrow or especially The Flash.
MIRI: I am (obviously) all fluttery over Alex and Maggie getting engaged, but the real world cynic in me is a little concerned that they have not known each other long enough for this. Thoughts?
KRIS: I don’t know yet either. It’s also hard to compartmentalize the metatextual knowledge that Floriana Lima is only a recurring guest next year (I guess they originally only planned for Maggie to be around for one season? so she was already looking for other gigs)
MIRI: Ahhhhh I didn’t know that
Awkward
KRIS: I’m hoping that means a low-conflict buildup to the wedding, as opposed to a protracted breakup arc
MIRI: BITE YOUR TONGUE
Don’t even put that possibility out there, Miranda
M: Upon reflection, I don’t actually know if Alex and Maggie need to be endgame (DON’T AT ME, TUMBLR). I have a lot of emotional attachment to Alex’s coming out arc, which I refused to believe they were actually going for (until it was basically stated outright) out of sheer self defense. I have been burned by queerbaiting before. An unfortunate factor of the lack of queer relationships on screen is that those that exist carry more weight than the average story arc, which can limit storytelling.
MIRI: We have not yet discussed Superman
KRIS: Let’s stay on Cat for awhile
MIRI: Ok
KRIS: Mostly because I’m watching this alley pep talk scene
MIRI: Are you just straight up rewatching the ep as we talk?
KRIS: skipped around a little, paused a little
MIRI: Ok
What are your thoughts on the alley pep talk scene?
KRIS: On a superficial level I like how well it works even with this very not-Cat staging
MIRI: Cat Grant has never sat in an alley in her fabulous life
(Although she was a stoner in college. Who knows? She contains multitudes)
KRIS: And I guess it’s deliberate-ish given her story about the yurt
Cat Grant Has Learned What Really Matters
MIRI: I did like that performance from Flockhart
KRIS: which is a mini-arc that I think works surprisingly well for having sat out so much of the season
MIRI: I am always pleasantly surprised when shows are able to use external circumstances (like shooting schedules and being in Vancouver) to good effect
When the show moved to the CW it also moved to Vancouver. Flockhart was not willing to move out for such a large portion of the year, thus her reduced episode count.
KRIS: I’m often ambivalent about Ethics Lessons in stuff like this
With Cat concluding here that Kara isn’t selfish to potentially put love over saving the world
BUT
MIRI: I think Kara more than most needs to hear that
KRIS: that Kara’s solution of working with Cadmus is then a compromise of an earlier moral hardline position complicates that beat for me -- which I would normally find a little lazy -- in a really good and interesting way
I guess that’s true
MIRI: I mean she still needs to save the world, like that’s definitely the right thing to do
But I think she needs to hear that wishing she didn’t have to do the right thing doesn’t make her less good
KRIS: Yeah, that’s interesting
I think I’ve subconsciously or not so subconsciously continued to have a low bar in my head for a lot of Supergirl’s storytelling
K: I wish this sounded less mean. Thematics in particular are what I tend not to have high expectations for, almost entirely because of heavy-handed Cat writing in the first third or so of season 1. But this season has generally been more solid in this respect, especially toward the end of Kara’s reporter arc.
M: As Kris stated at the top, we can be and often are critical of the things we love.
So I didn’t immediately expect Kara to find a Third Way
MIRI: ...it’s fairly merited
Although I think this season was less of a roller coaster than the first
KRIS: yeah, the highs werent as high but it was arguably more consistently solid
oh man I just accidentally clicked RIGHT to “Just be faster than me”
which is maybe the best line of the episode
MIRI: Nooooooo emotions!
Yes!
I think that’s where you see the core Danvers sisters relationship of this episode. They’re both going to do the right thing no matter how much it hurts them
But Kara has to make it
There’s no other option for Alex
M: Sister relationships will always be my kryptonite. (#sorrynotsorry for that one)
KRIS: I like the idea here that Alex, even though she hasn’t been the MOST rigorously professional this season, is trying to do what J’onn would do
And to an earlier point you made, I think this works better than it would have with a white (or I guess in J’onn’s case “white”) man authority figure
MIRI: Alex is definitely a true believer, in J’onn if not always in the DEO
KRIS: and I think this is true of J’onn’s general role in the cast as the Voice of Reason
MIRI: Good point!
KRIS: Like that’s such a Male Character archetype
But it doesn’t feel lazy here
MIRI: He can be paternal without being patriarchal, if that makes sense?
KRIS: Yeah, well put
Watching Cat’s Resist Speech now
Love Lena and Mon-El watching it
MIRI: Is that the anti-Trump one?
KRIS: yeah
MIRI: Hold on, I’m going to find it and watch too
KRIS: Katie McGrath does such good face acting
early-middle act 5
MIRI: bless you ❤️
KRIS: Fan mileage may vary but I think this speech works MUCH better than Kara’s speech at the end of season 1
MIRI: Ughhhh still watching commercials
Refresh my memory on that speech?
KRIS: I think it was a generally Hope-themed speech?
I mean I thought it was good
But it’s right on that edge of unreasonably optimistic earnestness
And on the page I think Cat’s speech here could be really self-congratulatory and valedictory but because it’s Cat, it’s got an edge to it that makes it feel ... not that way?
K: Still not sure how best to put this. I think it’s that even though her words lean toward “Go Get Em, Plucky Underdogs” (which is really not a theme I love, despite being a Star Wars fan), her tone is more “No One Gets to Sit This Out, So Get Your Shit Together”
MIRI: The Cat speech is post Rooftop battle, right?
Oh, how did you feel about the Kryptonite in the blood thing?
KRIS: Oh I’m still in Resist
It interrupts Rhea’s wedding ceremony
MIRI: ohhhh I thought you said act 5?
KRIS: Yeah
MIRI: The rooftop fight is the top of 5
KRIS: 5 in Nevertheless She Persisted
Cat’s speech is in Resist
MIRI: Ohhhhhhh I’m an idiot
I thought you were describing as the Resist speech, like it is about resisting
KRIS: I’ll look for Kara’s season 1 speech while you get there
MIRI: I forgot that the episode is called Resist
KRIS: Oh I did mean it that way, so you were not wrong
MIRI: hahahahahahahahaaaaa
M: I honestly just pinballed between both episodes in my head this whole time and it is thanks to Kris that any of this makes any sense.
KRIS: Okay so the conceit of Kara’s speech in the season 1 finale is that her appeal to everyone’s better angels, and the Power of Love, gets through Myriad and un-brainwashes everyone
K: Fucking Myriad
MIRI: Ohhhhhhh right
KRIS: in combination with the S taking over everyone’s screens
MIRI: Yeah, that’s conceptually a bit shlocky for me
KRIS: (which does work really well for Winn and James)
MIRI: I buy it in the personal cases
KRIS: they have these little flashback montages
MIRI: Not as much for the general public
KRIS: right
MIRI: But Melissa Benoist can sell a lot
KRIS: Child Kara Flashbacks always work on me
Red-Faced is not a good episode but it has a GREAT ending
MIRI: Whaaat?
You hate the children, though!
KRIS: I KNOW
MIRI: hahahahahaa
M: I think I care more about this than Kris, but I want to clarify that Kris does not hate children. He doesn’t super love them, though.
Mostly unrelated story: the first time Kris held our friend Karisa’s baby he was very uncomfortable and the baby cried. But then the next time, Kris was dramatically more comfortable. When asked why, he explained that he had realized that a baby human isn’t much smaller or more fragile than a puppy, and he had held puppies before.
KRIS: I guess Kara with Alura, specifically
as opposed to Growing Up on Earth flashbacks
MIRI: Right, that makes sense
KRIS: So obviously a big part of the reason Cat’s speech works so well is that it’s specific to a real-world moment
MIRI: I do like the idea that Kara lost more than Kal-El did (in some ways) because she can remember what she lost
Ok I’m almost to the Cat speech
KRIS: yeah
MIRI: I do love Cat’s “I can see his eyes” thing re: James/Guardian
KRIS: Which sets up that long-awaited Of Course She Knows payoff at the end of Nevertheless She Persisted
MIRI: Of course
I have gotten to the resist speech
KRIS: cool
MIRI: It is in no way subtle and I love that about it
They use Winn as an audience surrogate pretty effectively throughout. I like that
KRIS: Yes
I also love that Cat’s delivery stays sardonic and casual for 90 percent of the speech
MIRI: Yes!
KRIS: And she goes big for a second -- Not In My House -- but then she ends on a very Cat note
And I think a version of this speech delivered by Kara might’ve been just a touch heavy-handed for me
I mean I totally would have bought it, but I would have cringed a little too
I don’t know if I’m making much sense here
MIRI: Oh, definitely
No, I’m totally with you
Sometimes the pure Belief that Melissa Benoist pulls off so well is what we need, especially with all the Dark and Gritty out there
But sometimes things are so crap that you need a slightly more believable version
That’s a little darker and a little more lived in, but still belief
And that’s what Cat gives there
KRIS: Yeah
MIRI: It works both for the show and the state of the world
KRIS: Okay this Mon-El fight scene -- it’s not showy or anything but I love Lena’s blocking
Or I guess the way it’s shot to always focus on Mon-El but we still see what Lena’s doing
MIRI: Wait, where/when are we talking now?
KRIS: A little after the speech
in the hallway
MIRI: Oh, I paused to talk, so I’ll find it now
Lillian Luthor is such a bitch
KRIS: ha
MIRI: Yessss I love that little fight scene
She’s just so practical
Ok, I genuinely do want to talk about Superman at some point
KRIS: Okay I think I’m done with Resist now
MIRI: Wait, real quick--Lena hacking the ship with her tiara is great
The time before
It had been almost 5 months since Peggy was diagnosed with her Alzheimer’s. It was painful and strange to have his wife of 70 years not even recognize him. He hated that she couldn’t remember the beautiful life they had and only occasionally remembered their children. Regardless, He spent everyday, since she developed the illness, taking care of her and trying to make the time she has left happy.
Peggy was asleep, Steve decided it was the perfect chance for him to get some rest himslef. His daughter was making dinner in the kicthen, he figured if Peggy needed anything she could handle her for a bit.
As he rests his head on the pillow, he hears the door bell ring. Probably another shield agent come to give their condolences. He thought. They act like she’s already dead.
He felt his eyes start to grow heavy. Heavier and heavier and finally his eyes shut.
Suddenly he heard his daughter scream from downstairs.
His eyes shot open and he jolted up.
“Amy? Amy are you okay?” He yelled out as he ran down the stairs.
As he got to the bottom step he saw what caused her to scream. He couldn’t believe his eyes. He never thought he would run into him. He had always been careful to not go places he would, to keep to himslef and not cause attention. Now here he was on his door step. There standing in the doorway was the younger version of him. The version that was still in the avengers, the one that was just getting accustomed to the new age. The older version of Steve ran back up the stairs and got a baseball cap and put his reading glasses on hoping it would be enough that the younger version wouldn’t recognize him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean to scare you.” The younger Steve spoke to Amy. “I-i know I’m supposed to be dead. I came to see Peggy carter, I was told she lived here.“
Amy hadn’t seen Steve look that way since she was a child. It was actually somwhat erie. She felt like she was seeing a ghost. Part of her wanted to hug him, knowing the pain he had been through...but she knew he wasn’t her father not yet at least. He hadn’t come back in time and been with Peggy. this version didn’t have a daugther yet, he wouldn’t know her from a hole in the wall.
“I-i really don’t think it’s a good time to see her.” Amy had told the younger Steve. “She’s really sick and not in any condition for visitors. She probably won’t even remember you.”
“I understand that.” Younger Steve replied. “I don’t expect her to. I just want to at least see her. I want her to head how important she was to me and how much she influenced my life.” He shook his head. “I want to thank her for believing in me when no one else did. But most of all I want to say good bye.”
“Look I’m sorry but-“
“Let him in, it’s okay.” Older Steve told Amy.
She looked in back of her and saw older Steve coming down the stairs. he was sporting an old Yankees cap and rectangular glasses.
“But dad, dont you know who he is?” An
“Of course and it’s fine.” Older Steve told her putting a hand on her shoulder.
“Thank you, sir, I won’t be long I promise.” Young Steve spoke up looking to man with shock and gratitude. Older Steve guides the younger one into the home and sat him on the couch. His daughter followed behind them, then older Steve pulled her aside.
“Dad are you crazy!?” She whispered. “If he learns anything about his future it could mess up everything! You might not go back to be with mom, I might not be born!”
“He needs this.” He whispered to his daughter. “He needs to see her. It’s one of the things that made me want to go back. Seeing her so fragile and defeated it broke his heart and made him long more for the peggy he knew.”
“Well you shouldn’t be involved then.”
“I have to. I remember that day crystal clear even now....her husband was there that day, I mean I was..this me was there. I mean back then I didn’t know it was me I just knew him as her husband. he talked to me...or I guess I talked to myself. If we change any small piece of the event, it could change everything.”
Amy hugged her father.
“Daddy, be carful.” She told him. “I love you too much and if you were gone it would really suck.”
Older Steve chuckled and kissed her head. Then the Older Steve walked toward the couch and sat next to his younger self.
“I will go wake mom up.” Amy told younger Steve with a fake smile. “And then I will come get you, okay?”
The younger Steve nodded then Amy went upstairs.
The two sat in awkward silence for awhile. Then the younger one broke it.
“Sooo your her husband?” Younger Steve asked. “How did you met her?”
“...we uhhh met through work.” The other answered, not completely a lie.
“So you work for shield too?”
“I did. Now I don’t, I’m a school counselor now.”
“That sounds like a big jump from fighting crime to helping children deal with there problems.”
“I like to help people, I always have. Fighting isn’t always the best answer. Fighting just causes more pain and destruction. I think this a better way to help, to teach life that there are other ways to solve issues.”
The younger Steve never thought about things that way, but it made a lot of sense to him. It was actually those words that inspired him to do counseling for the endgame survivors.
“That’s really great.” He replied. “Do you and Peggy have children?”
“Yes.” Older Steve answered. “Two of them, one boy and a girl. She was the one woman you met at the door. There both grown now and have their own careers. Both working within shield now, Peggy was so proud!”
“.....Did Peggy live a good life? Was she happy? You know before she got sick.”
“I think so. She retired from shield about five years ago. Well retired, would imply she wanted to leave. The higher ups had to practically beg her to leave. She did a good job and all, but the investors wanted someone younger. She worked well into her 80s, more behind the scenes stuff, thankfully around 50 she decided being a field agent probably wasn’t vest at her age. Anyways once she retired we traveled the world together. We saw Italy, Greece, Spain, Egypt. So many beautiful places and we experienced so much. When We went to Greece she somehow convinced me to go sky diving with her!” Older Steve chuckled. “And in Spain we went skinny dipping like two teenagers. “
Younger Steve laughed.
“Life with her was never dull and she made my life. We also babysit the grandkids as much as we could. They adored Peggy and they especially loved her stories. A lot of them about you and your adventures in the war. She always brought a smile to my face and always will.”
“You can come see her.” The heard Amy say.
Younger Steve got up and shook the older mans hand. Then he went up to see Peggy.
