Barbara Stauffacher Solomon: Northern California Legacy Spotlight
Last April, just before her death at 95, we had the privilege to interview Barbara Stauffacher Solomon, the trailblazing landscape architect and artist best known for her supergraphics inside Sea Ranch. Solomon, or “Bobbie” as everyone called her, was much more than her famous graphics, as her daughter Nellie, who helped parlay our questions to Bobbie, emphasizes.
Nellie King Solomon is an artist in her own right, whose gorgeous abstract paintings almost match the vibrancy of Nellie herself. We spoke with the two of them about memory and landscape, about love and what each has learned from the other, and about looking back on a life well-lived. Nellie’s daughter Fia joined in.
A few months after Bobbie's death, we revisited Nellie to ask what her mom’s legacy might be.
Studio AHEAD: Did California’s landscape influence your work once you returned from Switzerland?
Bobbie: It was the freedom of being a California woman that influenced you more than the landscape. Being in California as a woman was very different than being in Switzerland as a woman. I could do anything I wanted.
Nellie: I feel you, too, about the California woman thing and the freedom here having worked and lived in Europe and New York. I’ve come back to California multiple times as a result. There are hard-to-describe unspoken freedoms that are unheard of elsewhere. Even in New York. I would do things and be dismissed as “Californian”: make a drawing a certain way, have a different relationship to abstraction. At Cooper Union I would jump on top of my drafting table just so I could get a good look at my drawing from a distance. It seemed like the most natural thing in the world! Definitely a California move.
I would spend the weekends at Martha’s Vineyard looking at a seashell, stoned, and come back Tuesday morning with clear ideas about what I was going to draw for afternoon critique—that was a very different way of going about it. Slaving all weekend and sleeping under your desk was the East Coast Cooper way. Not for me. Go jump in some water and look at seashell instead.
Bobbie: About architecture, I see the corners of buildings and how they relate to each other. Supergraphics is all about relating everything to the corners. It never works having to do a computer printout ahead of time. It doesn’t work because it’s all about tying the graphics to the corners, which is on site. The architecture tells you what to do.
Studio AHEAD: The contrast between the colorful, geometric quality of Sea Ranch’s Supergraphics and the rolling hills and waves of Sonoma is very striking. Was this on purpose?
Bobbie: I didn’t want it to stick out. I didn’t want it to be more visible than the landscape itself. Well, it is but it’s indoors.
Nellie: You were doing the Supergraphics indoors so that it wouldn’t stand out against the land and look obnoxious. That’s why there’s all those rules up there at Sea Ranch—that whole dictatorial handbook that comes with the property that says don’t plant a rose or do Supergraphics outdoors. Your stuff is brazen but it’s inside.
Bobbie: Like once I was teaching at Sitka, Alaska and a woman wanted me to paint the main street with Supergraphics—this little town. I said “No!” with vengeance.
Nellie: I remember the walk through the forest and the ancient weathered totem poles and you would let the students paint inside the ugly fluorescent lit hallways. You wouldn’t let them paint outside in the beautiful quiet forest.
Studio AHEAD: What is one of your works that you’d wish had gotten more attention?
Bobbie: Graphics at the San Francisco Museum. It’s the biggest artwork in the museum that a woman has ever been allowed to make. And what does that mean? There really hasn’t been any press.
Nellie: And you’ve been annoyed about that. It’s bigger than a football field, and stronger in a way.
Studio AHEAD: Nellie, you help your mom with these large installations. What have you learned from her?
Nellie: Be big, bold, and beautiful. Be brazen. Think of the whole space and really go for it. These are all things that come in the territory of helping my mom do what she does. They definitely have rubbed off on me. To think of things from the perspective of the negative space, as opposed to the positive space, that’s a more formal quality. I think of the principles that she learned from Armin Hoffman. What I absorbed in watching her put together and draw Green Architecture and the Agrarian Garden when I was in fifth grade. So many gardens Bobbie and I snuck into all over the world. That there’s a certain irreverence and physical relationship to space and making that I’ve adopted from working with her.
I learned a lot of stuff from her and that would be very hard to figure out. It’s like untangling pantyhose that has been in a drawer forever. It’s all tangled up. And then some stuff I learned from Cooper Union and then some stuff I learned from Hoffman. I mean where does one education start and another education begin? What stuff did you learn from which grandmother or which parent? These influences are all different voices mixed together and yet when you get in your studio—there’s a great quotewhen you close the door to your studio, you have to kick out all the voices and then begin.
Studio AHEAD: Bobbie, what has Nellie taught you?
Bobbie: What has Nellie taught me when you have a kid you love? You just learn how to try and make them happy.
Studio AHEAD: Fia, what’s going to be your medium of choice?
Fia: I'm a singer-songwriter, writer, and aspiring actress. I have an idea. I think that the youngest one should ask a question to the oldest one. I want to ask Bobbie, Why is your imagination at the end of life so opposite to your work?
Bobbie: You smart little thing!
* * *
Nellie: At the end Bobbie saw all of these romantic, fanciful, green, growing vines all over the ceilings and over the whole house. At one point the house turned into a hot-fudge sundae with different shades of light, dark, and milk chocolate for all the shadows. All these romantic and wild, elaborate visions would appear over the white walls of the clean, modernist house where she lived. Entirely opposite to the stark hard-edged graphics she was known for. That’s why Fia asked her question and why Bobbie knew it was wise.
Bobbie always loved the “schmaltzy” as she would call it. The romantic gardens, the formal gardens, the Tuileries, France, Turner Classic movies, Hollywood plots. When we wheeled her up to the entrance of SFMoMA to see her Strips of Stripes exhibition from the revolving doors, there was, flanking her work, two large Julie Mehretu works: “Ah, those are real art. The kind of stuff I would’ve made if I didn’t have to make money.”
As she lay dying in a magical space, her imagination ran wild on the stark white ceiling. She was enveloped in a romantic fantasy, ever-changing, constantly urgent to describe it to me, or anyone who would listen, as she slipped between worlds.
* * *
Studio AHEAD: What do you think your mom's legacy will be?
Nellie: There’s a chance that Bobbie’s Northern California legacy continues to be Sea Ranch. Bobbie does not see herself as defined by Sea Ranch at all. She is much more interested in her books and her continual evolution. Bobbie has a much more complex legacy than that one early project. She has multiple voices: hard-edge Supergraphics, complex books like Good Mourning California, the Green Architecture and the Agrarian Garden landscape drawings in the 80s.
She continually reinvented herself. Which made it tricky to pigeonhole her into a discipline or a style for a final summation, but it’s also her brilliance. In a 1968 Vogue issue, Bobbie (and her friend, the film critic Pauline Kael) were named “two of the 20 (?) women most in touch with her times.” Bobbie continually stayed “in touch with her times” by evolving with the times.
Studio AHEAD: What has been the reaction since her passing?
Nellie: People’s reaction is with a certain sense that Bobbie is immortal. It’s a funny thing. A dealer she worked with said “it seemed like she would never die. She couldn’t.” Even as she got old, she said “who you calling old?” Fia and I have decided not to refer to Bobbie in the past tense. We refer to her in the present tense. “Bobbie is” as opposed to “Bobbie was.”
There’s an outpouring of caring. It makes me want to invite everyone to be together in her honor, and onward. Bobbie lives in us. Bobbie is not at all gone.
“To be is not to know what to be”—this is one of my favorite things she wrote. If she is not being, then she now IS. Perhaps this is why galleries prefer to represent estate artists. Quantifiable only after death.

Enologist Emily Wiemer Is Honing in on Sonoma County’s ‘Yum Factor’
“Table fellowship” is what attracted Emily Wiemer, enologist at Three Sticks Winery to the wine industry. It’s sitting around with new people, friends, and colleagues learning about each with a wine bottle and cork as the only distraction is where she gains energy. The Minnesota native’s wine journey wasn’t too much of a stretch since she already had a passion for food and agriculture. She fully intended to pursue a job in the food and agricultural field after attaining an undergraduate degree in food science from Iowa State University. However, it was wine that “brought it all together” for her.
After completing an internship at Gloria Ferrer and her master’s degree in viticulture and enology at the University of California Davis, Wiemer joined Three Sticks in 2019. This year, the 2019 (Three Sticks current release) is her first “grape to bottle.” Wiemer sat down with VinePair to discuss and gain an understanding of the enologist role, her thoughts on women in the wine industry, and how she found the “yum factor” at Three Sticks.
1. Where did your passion for wine come from?
My passion for wine arose from the realization that it bridges many gaps among things I already love. Wine unites my love for agriculture that I cultivated while at Iowa State; it provides me with a medium through which to apply chemistry and microbiology; and it incorporates hospitality and sharing my passion with others. I also really appreciate that winemaking can be found in every corner of the globe. The pursuit of becoming a winemaker has allowed me to travel for work to South Africa and Italy. I love incorporating wine tastings into touring new places.
2. In your own words, what is an enologist; how is it different and/or related to winemaker?
The easiest way to put it is to say that I am a “wine scientist.” Much of my role involves sampling or testing wines to help monitor them. The data is then used in conjunction with tastings, but the response of our taste buds always wins out over a number on the page. Preparing and participating in tastings is another crucial part of my day-to-day role, especially during blending and bottling. I do lots of quality assurance and quality control, and through this I participate in every part of the winemaking process — from grape to bottle — which makes it a great preparatory role for moving into winemaking positions as I progress in my career.
3. There are several entry points into wine industry. What was yours and why did you choose it?
I entered the industry via education, knowing that it would be a powerful tool in helping me pivot and build upon my previous studies and experience in the food and agriculture industry. It was also an opportunity to begin building a community for myself in a new state and a new field. So, I enrolled at the University of California at Davis to learn more about the winemaking process and the science behind it. From there, gaining hands-on experience was crucial to cementing what I had learned in school and providing me a way to apply it.
4. How did UC Davis prepare you for your role and the wine world?
UC Davis helped me to further develop my critical thinking and data interpretation skills and helped me to build a network of wine industry professionals through the community of students, including my graduate program cohort. We were able to put these technical learnings into perspective through participation in extracurricular groups that also introduced us to industry veterans and a diverse array of successful approaches to winemaking. This helped us to realize how these lessons would best serve us, and to determine when we might want to take a different approach. Tasting groups, classes, and seminars helped each of us to discover our own personal style. In addition, these experiences helped us to acknowledge that the context of our schooling, particularly related to sensory perception, grape growing, and winemaking, can affect what we find in each bottle.
5. How did you end up at Three Sticks? In your opinion how does it stand out?
I knew as I entered the wine world that I wanted to focus on Sonoma County, particularly on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with quality at top of mind. Three Sticks is all of this and more. Carl Formaker, Three Sticks’ assistant winemaker (and a fellow UC Davis alum), helped to connect me with the rest of the winemaking team and it turned out to be a great fit. Three Sticks stands out because of our ability to get to know our estate vineyards across Sonoma County and what we on the winemaking team call the “yum factor.” We look for it as we’re blending, and we delight in it as we revisit wines we’ve made from previous vintages. It is this sort of X-factor that leaves you wanting another sip. I feel supported and encouraged, which has allowed me to thrive these last couple years. I’m so grateful for that.
6. What advice would you give to young women wanting to work in the industry as a winemaker, in the vineyard, or the cellar?
Just try it! And don’t overthink it! Be prepared for some hard work, but it comes with some great rewards. Find a team that supports you, and then “bloom and grow.” Try to learn why you’re doing a task — this helps both with motivation and fulfillment at work for me. Being humble, vulnerable, and ready to learn also fosters a longer-term commitment to crafting wines and remaining in this industry. Don’t let self-doubt or negative self-talk push you out of something that you really love.
7. How has the wine industry changed in the last year? How have things improved?
The past year was extremely challenging for the California wine world due to Covid and fires. These issues have forced us to adapt and improve. Having an online presence and the adoption of more technology were huge factors both for selling wine (online marketplaces, virtual tastings) as well as for increasing access for seminars and conferences while unable to gather or travel. Though these were imperfect replacements, I think that there were some highly positive takeaways that will remain in place. Fires forced everyone to confront their commitment to quality, though the response to this challenge varied across the industry. Some chose not to harvest, and others felt they could still make great wine since the effects were felt differently across each region. Regardless, we have all had to learn a lot more about this threat to our industry and how we can defend the quality of our wines against it.
8. What is the best piece of advice you received regarding your career?
Being reminded to balance patience with drive. While having goals is obviously very important to continue progressing, realizing the beauty of maximizing your current situation for the utmost growth has been a big lesson for me. Acknowledging that I am right where I need to be in the given moment has helped lend a lot more satisfaction and happiness to my journey in wine. Embracing this long road is crucial to promote sustainable learning for me.
9. How does the “affordability” of California affect interns, cellar masters, and other roles in Napa/Sonoma?
Because the area where we are employed is so highly coveted by others for its lifestyle, weather, and location, it can be tough to live where we work. I would say that it often ends up preventing some of us from participating in the “lifestyle” we had hoped for as we joined the industry, which is heartbreaking. But we enjoy other insider perks in wine country that help to offset this challenge, though they do not make up for the challenge completely.
Our hospitality colleagues warmly take care of their own, and that sort of acknowledgment is so appreciated. It can be tough for interns (particularly those that are traveling) to break even given the dual challenges of expensive housing and their temporary status. This then negatively affects their experience in exploring the region that they are working within.
10. Do you have advice for anyone interested in or new to working a harvest regarding expectations?
Be ready to get dirty and work long hours. It is extremely important to check one’s ego at the door, because saying “that’s not my job” is not OK. We are all in it together, and that camaraderie and teamwork is what buoys us through the vintage season. Seasonal work is a huge challenge as the hours and work are inconsistent as folks enter the industry, but we all patch it together until we find a sustainable, full-time job.
11. What’s next for you professionally?
I hope to keep growing in my role as enologist for Three Sticks and that I continue to learn from everyone on the rest of the team. Progressing into roles as assistant winemaker and eventually head winemaker will be stepping stones as I continue my career in wine. It is also important to me that I help as many people as possible as I grow and continue my learning. I aspire to do this by sharing my knowledge, offering encouragement, and by being inclusive in all that I do.
12. What’s next for Three Sticks?
We are continuing to strive to make the best wines possible. We will continue to make wines that represent their growing season and a sense of their place. This commitment means that we are never complacent or rocking back on our heels. It keeps us learning. It keeps us growing. It is also important to us that we keep sharing our wines, specifically in modes that convey table fellowship and that foster friendship and community. Gathering around our wines with friends and family is when they shine brightest. This organic growth is what will ensure and maintain our role in Sonoma County wine.

Going places: Wine and art, the perfect pairing in Sonoma, Calif. – Entertainment
by Karen Rubin with Dave E. Leiberman, Laini Miranda, Eric Leiberman & Sarah Falter Journey Options Syndicate, goingplacesfarandnear.com
Wine and artwork are an ideal pairing, we found touring Sonoma, California, well-known for its vineyards and wine-tasting experiences.
Give it some thought: wine-making is absolutely the synthesis of nature, science and artwork, the vineyards are themselves these bucolic pastoral settings that encourage artwork. Certainly, there’s a relaxing aesthetic to the neat, symmetrical rows, the pleasing colours, the sense of renewal.
Artwork is nearly as ubiquitous as wine in Sonoma, artwork galleries just like the Paul Mahder Gallery in Healdsburg, have their very own wine-tasting; vineyards have artwork, just like the Donum Property winery with a considerable sculpture backyard, in addition to particular artwork, music and cultural occasions, like Gundlach Bundschu Vineyard which organizes pop-up outside artwork reveals (live shows and weddings additionally when COVID restrictions are lifted), and Imagery which has its personal artwork gallery of commissioned works for its labels.
Sonoma wineries – together with eating places, artwork galleries, outlets, and the entire customer ecosystem – have made lodging to proceed to welcome friends to wine tastings whereas sustaining well being protocols. Visits are by advance reservations to restrict capability, served outdoors; artwork galleries and outlets are nicely ventilated and at this writing require masks inside and social distancing.
Sonoma County has a outstanding vary of terroir and microclimates – from the Pacific shoreline, the redwood forests, fertile valleys and mountains – that has produced one of the numerous winegrape-growing areas on this planet, and in addition one of the picturesque.
We skilled wineries and vineyards nearly day by day – visiting a number of for tastings, to make certain, but in addition because the scenic backdrop to biking. They aren’t solely so exquisitely scenic – bucolic, pastoral landscapes with shade and sample of the rows rippling with the rolling hills – however provide fascinating, even dramatic histories. And simply as their wines are distinct, so is the tasting expertise and ambiance.
On one in every of my bike excursions, I stumbled on Buena Vista Vineyard, which has an entertaining approach of presenting historical past and its personal again story with a declare to being California’s oldest business vineyard, in truth, the birthplace of the state’s trendy wine business: The founding father of Buena Vista Vineyard, Depend Agoston Haraszthy, got here from Hungary initially in pursuit of gold however in 1857, determined as a substitute to construct a stone vineyard on the property. He launched cuttings from Europe’s greatest vineyards to California and principally proved that California may produce wine. You’ll be able to join the “Be the Depend Expertise,” wine mixing because the Depend may need achieved it, or style a flight whereas touring the Wine Device Museum. Imagery Property Vineyard boasts “we’ve been exploring the intersection of artwork and wine for over 30 years.” They’re extraordinarily pleased with inviting notable modern artists to design their wine labels and even have an artwork gallery of the unique work. We completely loved our 45-minute alfresco tasting of 5 small manufacturing wines at Imagery, a vineyard that prides itself on “crafting uncommon wines from unusual varietals and character-rich vineyards.” Imagery Property Vineyard was solid from a thirst for experimentation.” They highlight fascinating, non-traditional varietals like Lagrein and Tempranillo, “creating expressive wines that broaden the palate.” Reservations are required for outside seated tastings, Thursday-Monday, and outside picnic tables; you may order a Charcuterie field. We wished to immerse them within the pure setting of the land and assist them perceive the complexity of the Sonoma Mountain property and the way it made our wines distinctive. This stays our primary purpose… As our winemaking course of developed into Biodynamics with the discharge of our Property grown Biodynamic wine, Tribute, in 2001, our tour developed as nicely to what it seems like right this moment. We didn’t have the chance to do a wine tasting at Hanzell, which instructions one of the beautiful views of the hillsides and mountains, however occurred to be there at sundown. We plan to return. Hanzell Vineyards was based by Ambassador James D. Zellerbach in 1953 with a imaginative and prescient to create wines that might compete on the world stage. Named for his spouse Hana, Hanzell sits on the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain vary overlooking the south-western finish of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay. After in depth time spent in Burgundy, Zellerbach returned impressed and educated by the area’s wines and grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He planted these two varieties at a time when there have been lower than a couple of hundred acres of every planted in North America.
Since 1975, Hanzell has been solely owned by the de Brye household, who is devoted to the preservation of custom with a progressive and holistic strategy to make sure the sustainability for generations to return. Folks have the concept wine tasting is dear however most of the wineries in Sonoma County provide both free wine tasting or waive the tasting charge with a wine buy. Insider’s tip: it’s usually higher worth (cheaper) to hitch the wine membership and luxuriate in a free wine tasting, which offers further privileges together with discounted costs; they sometimes ship the bottles you select.
Additionally, Sonoma County Tourism sells one- and three-day tasting cross (on cellular) that you would be able to redeem on the wineries you select to go to. For extra details about what’s open, preparations to go to and lodging, and buying the tasting cross go to Sonoma County Tourism, www.sonomacounty.com/locations/wine-regions.
Artwork Experiences Abound
On the opposite facet of the equation, artwork galleries pair with wine. Certainly, it was artwork, not wine, that introduced us to Sonoma.
Our journey was timed for a particular occasion: the opening of Laini’s artwork exhibit, “Between Partitions” on the Paul Mahder Gallery, a big, nicely ventilated gallery house and, as an added deal with, with an open-air wine-tasting room with the wine bottles embellished with Paul’s work (paulmahdergallery.com; laininemett.com).
That is what introduced us to Healdsburg, a splendidly vibrant, culturally wealthy city with some 25 artwork galleries and a food-and-wine haven with 30 wine-tasting rooms and marvelous eating places that embrace Sonoma County’s farm-to-table motion. We liked our lunch at Bargas, and our dinner on the H2Hotel restaurant, with beautiful outside seating areas. The well being precautions all through Healdsburg had been spectacular (there’s even sanitizer positioned at crosswalks).
It’s a particular expertise to fulfill the artist at a gallery opening who provides private insights into the work and artistic course of, however visiting an artist in his studio provides one other dimension – seeing works-in-progress on their easels, a complete profession on show and having the chance to debate the nuances and background of the works in such a private setting. We had that have with Kevin Kearney, who epitomizes the wedding of artwork and wine (he used to personal a winery).
Kearney is a grasp of beautiful, mind-blowing positive real looking element paying homage to the Dutch masters, however with a unusual sense of surrealism and trendy sensibility, usually enjoying on historic myths and pictures. He tells us that it took 100 hours simply to color the carpet in one in every of his works.
“In Kevin Kearney’s work, there are on a regular basis chairs from which the viewer sees the world realistically. And there are magical thrones from which the viewer imagines haunting creatures on patterned carpets floating via cerulean skies above cerulean seas. His purple partitions and surreal ceruleans look tranquil sufficient, however beware, any minute, a tsunami may erupt,” writes Barry Nemett, within the catalog for Kearney’s 2019 exhibit, “Purple Partitions, Surreal Ceruleans, and a Tsunami,” on the Ice Home Gallery, Petaluma. (https://hyperallergic.com/514445/paintings-kevin-kearney-red-walls-surreal-ceruleans-and-a-tsunami/)
Listening to the tales behind the symbols and the imagery from the artist straight transports you into the canvas and the artist’s thoughts.
You’ll be able to request to go to the studio/gallery of artist Kevin Kearney who has his personal winery and wine assortment (www.kevinkearney.org, www.kevinkearney.org/contact) Throughout our Sonoma go to, we rented bikes to experience on a stunning leisure path that related to back-country roads flanked by vineyards, using into neighboring Napa county. When biking, it’s enjoyable to occur upon – uncover, if you’ll – historic websites just like the Depot Park Museum and Basic Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s Dwelling, which you encounter alongside the path (Wine Nation Cyclery, 262 W Napa St, Sonoma, CA 95476, 707-996-6800; Sonoma Valley Bike Excursions & Leases, 254 Broadway, Sonoma, CA 95476, 707-996-2453)
We savored wine-tastings at a number of vineyards and visited artwork galleries and outlets; went mountain climbing on the Kortum Path alongside the Pacific Coast (what an incredible distinction to our mountain climbing vacation in Loss of life Valley Nationwide Park!), dined outdoor at eating places (liked Salt & Stone, Kenwood, www.saltstonekenwood.com, 707-833-6326), performed tennis on group courts, went to the farmer’s market – each place, from the mountain climbing trails to the vineyards, to the eating places, galleries and outlets – all adopted stringent well being protocols.
Sonoma County Tourism might help plan your getaway (request a Sonoma County guests information and map) and supply updates on what is out there at its See What’s Open web site.

The Kincade Fire Continues to Threaten Northern California’s Vineyards
The Kincade Fire that has devastated Sonoma County over the past six days continues to wreak havoc in the area, having burned nearly 76,000 acres and forcing the evacuation of more than 200,000 people.
Previously, as of Saturday, evacuations had been in place for residents of Geyserville, Healdsburg, Windsor, and those living in western Mendocino. But powerful 90 mph “Diablo” winds over the weekend prevented efforts to contain the fire.
Millions of Californians are without power after Pacific Gas and Electric Company forced a historical blackout on Sunday. As of Monday morning, mandatory evacuations have been expanded to include northeast Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, and western parts of Sonoma County.
According to Wine Spectator, an evacuation warning is in effect for Calistoga and areas north, implemented in case the fire should move southeast from Sonoma.
While Napa Valley has been spared thus far, the fire has destroyed several Alexander Valley wineries, including Sonoma’s historic Soda Rock Winery, leaving just the stone facade and a 20-foot steel sculpture of a boar standing in its path.

A post shared by Soda Rock Winery (@sodarockwinery) on Oct 28, 2019 at 10:22am PDT
“I’m still in a fog. It’s still surreal,” Ken Wilson, Soda Rock’s owner, told the San Francisco Chronicle. Wilson’s entire 2019 vintage and much of his wine inventory has been lost. But the most painful loss for Wilson is the Soda Rock building itself, a 19th-century structure he helped restore.
“I spent a good five years of my life passionately involved in that restoration. How do I get those years back? It’s a huge loss to the community,” Wilson added.
In addition to Soda Rock, The Spire Collection at Field Stone Winery, another Healdsburg-based winery, was also seriously damaged in the fire.
One small source of relief: Nearly 80 percent of Alexander Valley’s grape harvest was well under way, according to Michael Haney, the executive director of the Sonoma County Vintners trade group. Being home to almost 15,000 acres of vineyards, that’s a lot of grapes that may have been spared.
Alexander Valley Vineyards escaped with minor damage, but is one of the unlucky vineyards that still has grapes on the vine. With no electricity, the winery’s owner Hank Wetzel fears the grapes could likely rot.
“We just don’t know if we are going to get them picked at this point,” Wetzel told The Press Democrat. If not harvested in time, the vineyard could stand to lose 500 tons of grapes.
Patrick Cappiello, restaurateur, sommelier, and founder of the Occidental-based winery Monte Rio Cellars, fled Sonoma to Napa Valley on Saturday evening. Speaking to VinePair while looking out of his window towards Sonoma yesterday, Cappiello said it looked like an “atomic bomb” had detonated.
Those hoping to help the winemaking community should “be aware, spread the word, and be prepared to assist,” Cappiello says. When fires hit northern California in 2017, Cappiello worked with friends Pax Mahle and Sara Morgenstern to establish the Winemakers and Sommeliers for California Wildfire Relief (WSCWR) charity.
At the time of publishing, he’s uncertain whether the WSCWR will be back for more events this year, but he says to stay tuned. In the meantime, he plans to offer updates on how to help via his social media accounts.
Tragically, this is not the only fire Californians are currently enduring. On Monday morning, a new blaze known as the Getty Fire prompted evacuations in western Los Angeles after consuming 500 acres in the area. The New York Times reports that, as of 9 a.m. local time on October 28, there have been no serious injuries or fatalities.
