What is the funniest most underrated duo in detective conan and why is it Shinichi and Sonoko?

the most underrated duo in dcmk

shipping aside, one of the most underdeveloped and fascinating friendships is the one between haibara ai/ miyano shiho and mouri ran.

we never see much of how haibara has been grieving her sister in canon.

however we can see her grief when she projects those grieving feelings onto ran. she can't bring herself to be nice to her at first because of the resemblance and she can't help but push her away because if she brings her close to her, it puts her in unnecessary danger.

but after ran says "courage is a word of justice," it opens a window into haibara's heart, who has felt so much guilt over not being able to protect her sister. she takes the first steps in healing, showing the first glimpse into a sense of inner peace for her by accepting that her sister's death happened and that she's allowed to rebuild her life, so she formally introduces herself to ran and sonoko for the first time.

ran didn't know it, but she helped haibara begin to heal in a way and gave her courage to truly open herself to others. she helped haibara see that there's value in trusting that there are still good people in the world she can trust after living a life of constantly looking behind her shoulder for someone to betray or kill her.

haibara can also be genuine in front of her. she even reverts to acting like a little sister with her, begging her older sister figure not to go when she begs ran not to leave prof. agasa's house. it's not performative like the other instances where she acts like a kid, surprising everyone around her. it's so genuine that ran agrees (ep. 425), telling her "ok, since you're asking me to stay."

ran has no idea what's going on, plot wise, but it's so obvious that she feels a strong attachment to haibara, compared to the other DB kids and other than conan, for some reason. she literally went after her when she suspected that jodie-sensei was being sus and haibara was being taken with little proof & acted with just intuition. she literally shields haibara from danger (i wished conan could've seen that but alas he got tranquilized) and haibara grips her jacket, thinking of her sister who risked her life to protect her from the organization.

i like to think that there's an underlying reason that ran can sense that there's something more to haibara because ran is literally so smart when she's not being gaslighted by literally everyone around her. She shows the best sides of her when she's not being trapped in having her worth associated with shinichi.

we actually get to see more of her personality as a protector and a emotionally intelligent friend when she's with haibara.

maybe ran is the only character that can truly empathize with haibara's deep seated loneliness in her heart, in a way that even shinichi doesn't understand.

LMAO Sonoko is adorable. She just kidnapped Shinichi as she didn't want to be alone but also didn't want Makoto and Ran to spend the whole time talking about karate when she wanted some time with her boyfriend.

The Shinichi and Sonoko dynamic is incredibly underrated and I think Gosho forgets that they're also close friends even though they love to antagonise and insult one another (honestly that just tells me they're so comfortable with one another they can talk like that without the other being upset). It's the rich kids solidarity.

Makoto and Sonoko are also just an adorable couple. He immediately rushed to make sure she was okay and wasn't sick when she sneezed like a good boyfriend (Shinichi take notes).

Makoto really was just going to take all the blame to protect children. He's adorable.

Are we about to see an old man kick ass? Yes, yes we are.

Shinichi is happy for his friend T-T It's very nice seeing him happy for Sonoko.

I need more Sonoko in my life. Remember her, Ran’s super awesome best friend who’s shown to be incredibly perceptive in regards to the things she cares about, even though those things are usually gossip? The girl who’s faced just as many traumatizing experiences as the rest of the cast and doesn’t let it darken her outlook on life at all? The girl who’s fought back to back with Ran even though she was outmatched? The girl who’s willing to use her connection to give a random bunch of kids she happens to know and her friends grand experiences just because she can, even though they never ask her for it. Fuck, I love her so damn much. Her friendship with Ran is truly one of my favourite things about the series as a whole.

OK. So I actually have a decent amount more to talk about here. Without getting too much into some actual spoilers, Karin is definitely the most developed character in the show (at least in season 1), going from your typical hotheaded “tsundere” girlypop into steadily managing to crack open that outer shell thanks to the help of the titular MC Yuuna herself, to then adopting the motto of the Hero Club and vowing to protect her friends. I’m leaving that semi-vague and awkward for a reason, because when I say Karin has the best moment of the first season, I mean it.

Of course, given my blog pfp and header, I could easily go on for 10,000+ words about how genuinely amazing the Nogi Wakaba chapter is, only one was faithfully in full (as of my knowledge) adapted into the series: the Washio Sumi chapter. And somehow it is even better than the first season. In just 6 episodes, the new characters you’re thrown into grab your heart and rip it open like a rabid squirrel or something idk. Speaking of.

Sonoko is iconic. She’s funny. She’s silly. Goofy. Her autistic swagger has reached beyond astronomical points. She loves cats. She has a chicken onesie. She stims. Hey, Wasshi. Let’s enjoy Kagawa Life. SHES VOICED BY FUCKING KANA HANAZAWA.

That, and honestly? She’s the embodiment of one of the show’s bigger themes: Hope. She just like all the other heroes like her absolutely go through it and yet she continues to fight on, no matter what. And you know what? Swag for that🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅 she also makes me immensely sad but that’s another discussion

I adored this show from the moment I watched it because throughout it all, it’s hopeful. These girls go through a lot. A LOT. A lot of horrible, horrible things, and yet they bounce back. These girls bounce back pretty much every single time and do anything to help their friends do the same. To me, that is insanely inspiring.

The cast of characters here are also insanely compelling. They feel like actual, real friends—doing things together, hanging out, comforting each other and laughing with them all the same. This point I feel helps that sense of hope this show has absolutely.

The character designs in general too are absolutely breathtaking, and are nothing like I’ve ever seen from any other magical girl anime. Also, one last thing: this show’s soundtrack is done by MONACA. MONACA is also known for doing the first two NieR games. Take that what you will :)

The animation is great and the soundtrack is done by Hiroyuki Sawano, who’s amazing and it’s one of the best soundtracks for a show ever.

A main subject of the show is racism. Active war, lots of violence. Character acts without regard for their life, so suicide was included. Child abuse relates to the backstory of a character.

i found a Kaishin fic and its good! the summary is shinichi finding out about snake while undercover in a kid heist because in this fic even though the highest ranking executives in the black org is in custody its still dangerous lmao, shinichi wears the knight costume from sonoko’s play (desperate revival). the fic is very interesting and my explanation doesn’t do it justice so just check it out please, its underrated.

How about your top 5 underrated duo or dynamics in dmck?

AOHHHHH SHIT. Okay, right off the bat, I love this ask, so I’m going to write a lot, excuse me lmao.

Let me preface this by warning you that all of these revolve around my favourite characters, so I’m SURE that there’s more dynamics that would be great to get a look at, but the rules are the rules so let’s keep it at 5. Okay, here we go:

1. Shinichi and Sonoko. DUDE. I JUST- LOVE THEM??? I can’t explain. I’m sad that there isn’t much about them on their own. They feel like a powerful and sassy duo, you know? Both have much more in common than what it looks like at first or than they are willing to admit, and they also care about the other A LOT and want the other to be happy. I posted a couple of analysis or asks before so if you go through the tags I’m sure you can find a lot on these two. I just think they’re really neat. They’re sassy, salty, protective of Ran, got money, I can honestly see them roasting or talking trash about people... they’re very VERY FUN. 

2. Heiji and Ran. What can I say? I’m a slut for my favourite characters. The relationship between these two is something that we got a couple of glances at. We know they sometimes dress similarly, that they both care incredibly for Shinichi, that Heiji thinks Ran should know Shinichi’s secret, that Ran knows Heiji loves Kazuha very dearly... they just feel like very good and nice friends to each other. I want more of them together, working together, interacting. They are VERY cute. 

3. Takagi and Shinichi. People, the elevator scene with Conan and Takagi on the verge of death remains... ICONIC. I don’t even have words to explain how much I love that interaction between the two of them. I think I’ve spoken about these two before here, but let me reiterate, I hope Takagi gets to know Conan is Shinichi, if that was not foreshadowing I will be DEEPLY dissappointed. And one more thing, I might have mentioned this as well but- Takagi and Shinichi really could be the new Megure and Yusaku. They will work together and become great friends. Shinichi will babysit TakaSato’s baby,... it’s just wholesome here. 

4. Ran and Makoto. I know, pretty random, huh? But let me tell you, these two are BABEY, okay? Shinran and Makosono are somewhat inversed parallels of each other. On the one hand we have Shinichi and Sonoko, with they attitude, their confidence, their willingness to speak their minds no matter what. And then we have Ran and Makoto... let me reiterate, they are babey. They are so strong, physically and mentally, they are so sweet, so wholesome, so hot. I feel like as they hang out more and more (because they will, you know this four will constantly go on double dates), they will become good friends. Truly a POWER DUO. 

5. Kogoro and Shinichi. I love them. I love their interactions. I love how much they’ve grown to actually respect and care about the other. I can’t wait to see the moment Kogoro finally knows the truth so they can work things out and talk. Shinichi owes him a big apology too, and I want to see it. I have hopes that they’ll keep working together on cases from time to time, maybe Shinichi will stop by to see him (and not run away from him because he’s scared like most interpret him to do once he comes back), and maybe Kogoro will keep on calling him brat sometimes, but Shinichi will slip up and call him “uncle” instead,... I just have a lot of feelings about these two. /sobs/

You know, I’m quite curious on when did Sonoko actually started shipping her friends. I mean, how did she realize or what made her realize that Shinichi and Ran like each other? Did Ran told her that she likes Shinichi? Or Sonoko did some blackmailing to Shinichi to get him admit that he likes Ran? When did the teasing started? What do you think? I like reading your deep and moving thoughts about it! 😊

Awwww thank you for saying such nice things!!! I really like answering all of your asks, so that works out nice! 

I love this question, first of all, because I love Sonoko and any chance I get to talk about her is beautiful. 

I don’t think Ran ever told her because early on in the story, when Aoyama was establishing Ran and Sonoko’s friendship, we saw Sonoko tease and ask Ran about her feelings for Shinichi, and she always denied them --albeit turning bright red while at it. But even before that, actually, when Ran tells Conan how she feels about Shinichi that first time they walk back home she tells him that she hasn’t actually told anyone other than him about her feelings. 

So technically, Ran’s never told her. Sonoko just figures it out. 

Which is infinitely better, I think, because it proves something that I’m very proud to say, which is that Sonoko is smarter and much more important than people think. Honestly, the whole Sonoko-Shinichi-Ran friendship is so wonderful and so unfairly underrated, and it’s mostly because Sonoko is a massively underrated character, for some reason, when she’s honestly Iconique™. She’s probably the one person who knows Shinichi and Ran best because she’s, quite literally, lived with and known them their entire lives. I like to talk about how nobody knows Ran better than Shinichi and vice versa, but I really think Sonoko may be the exception, precisely because she’s always been right there with them, ever since day one. So she knows Ran, she knows Shinichi, she knows what they’re like together. And because she’s smart, and clever, and just generally the best person ever and is super in tune with other people’s feelings, she very early catches on to what’s going on between them. 

I’d even dare say that she probably knows what Ran and Shinichi feel for each other before they even realize it themselves. I mean, it doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure that one out, but to Sonoko it’s even more crystal clear because she knows both of them so incredibly well. And that idea goes both ways, by the way, because Ran and Shinichi also know Sonoko really, really well. 

Like I said, it’s not exactly a hard deduction to make, because literally everyone who spends more than two seconds with Shinichi and Ran very quickly understands that they’re in love and will live happily ever after. Their entire class knows, they all ship it. It takes Sera a grand total of like five minutes to realize Shinichi and Ran are a thing. Even Eisuke, dense and useless as he was, ultimately realizes it and, in a surprisingly clever manoeuvre on his part, uses that knowledge to force Shinichi to tell him the truth. It takes Yukiko a day of preschool to start shipping them and understand what’s going on. It takes Vermouth half a day with them to figure it out. Haibara, Agasa, Heiji, even the fucking Detective Boys know what the fuck is going on. It’s not hard. 

What’s remarkable about Sonoko is that she knows how to push them towards each other best. Honestly, whenever shit gets done in regards to ShinRan, it’s mostly thanks to Sonoko. She’s the one who forces Shinichi on stage as the Black Knight, jeopardizing the play she’s worked so hard on just so that Shinichi and Ran can hug and --almost-- kiss because she knows how badly both of them want it and need it to happen. She’s constantly teasing both of them and pushing them to admit their feelings for each other because she knows it kills both of them to dance around each other as friends and nothing else. She sends Shinichi that photo of Okiya and Ran because she knows the only way Ran’s going to answer his confession is by making Shinichi jealous as fuck and pushing him to confront Ran about it, thus pushing Ran towards her answer. 

It’s because she knows them best that she can do all of this so flawlessly. Everyone else keeps giving out advice to them, but nobody actually makes shit happen. Sonoko. Gets. Shit. Done.

Honestly Sonoko is so great and the older I get the more I love and treasure and appreciate her and I think y’all should too.

WIP Week, Day 2: An Underrated WIP

Lol you mean all the ones I haven’t posted anything of yet for people to appreciate?

In all seriousness, I’m pretty happy with the engagement on my fics, including the incomplete ones. Even Sphygmoid got a fair amount of attention, and that’s one for which I don’t think I’ve delivered content up to my own standards yet. (I will, just I haven’t quite yet... I guess I’m the one who’s underrating Sphygmoid then).

This prompt was a good excuse to revisit my draft for that, and try to establish Sonoko’s voice, since I wanted chapter two to be her perspective when Ran calls, and my inability to write Sonoko is getting in my way. I have strong feelings about her and Shinichi’s friendship though, so I refuse to leave her out of a multiple-platonic-soulmates AU.

Bonus Question: What small fandom/rarepair would you love to see/create more fanworks for?

Oh, hands down Saguru/Shinichi content, especially if it starts as Saguru&Conan friendship. I can’t get enough of it, and a single author has written like half of what’s available and I hate to put pressure on them by requesting more. Which means I read the same five fics over and over because I know what I like. (like there’s plenty of Kaito/Shinichi/Saguru, but so much of the time that’s just KaiShin+ rather than giving Saguru the attention he deserves.)

One of these days I will write my own SaguShin fic...

Aoko and Akako if you’re doing for MK too

aoko:

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would banghogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff (could not choose tbh, though i’d say she chooses gryffindor in an au to get into the same house as kaito or smth)best quality:  aside from the obvious (sweet as hell when not speaking to kaito) she’s really smart and i always think about this.  she’s GOOD AT MATH.  i stan girls who are good at math so hard.  excellentworst quality:  aoko kaito flipping your skirt up is bad but don’t get fish to torture him :cship them with:  AKAKO and also her uh, best friend with the pigtails whose name i forgot.  holy fuck i could do an utena au with her and akako holy fuckbrotp them with:  kaito!  i also kind of want her to have a platonic relationship with saguru too.  and her dad obvs.needs to stay away from:  not sure, just… bad guys in general i guessmisc. thoughts:  aoko is underrated by everyone, including me.  an utena au holy fuck

general opinion: fall in a hole and die | don’t like them | eh | they’re fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my life hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would banghogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuffbest quality:  she’s a pretty good schemer for her age.  a few instances come to mind, like whenever she helps out kaito, or when she summons that spirit and then is just like “nope you don’t get shit from me bye”worst quality:  she’s kind of unnecessarily mean sometimes ;__; esp to aoko in the skiing ep.  don’t be mean to your future gfship them with:  aoko!!!  also maybe sonoko, just bc i love the idea of like, akako stealing her heart or something, or her being a dashing witch and sonoko deciding she’s in lovebrotp them with:  kaito and saguru!  for some reason, i also feel like she’d get along with shiho…needs to stay away from:  anyone that enables her compulsive heterosexuality :Vmisc. thoughts:  i stan for akako as a lesbian w/ compulsive het.  i’d also like to see more of her magic, bc the stuff like “witches can’t cry EVER” is interesting, if somewhat strange sometimes.  can she not cut onions then????  hope she’s not allergic to anything like pollen
