Unique English Hong Konger Names
As a result of British colonization, most Hong Kongers have English names along side their Chinese names. However, since Hong Kong is not exactly an English speaking society, some of the names that parents choose for their children (or they choose themselves) may have unconventional spelling, sound like they're not "real names", or generally appear unusual to native English speakers. Which I find interesting because they follow "English name structures" without actually being English names.
Here are some examples I found as I was scrolling through the list of Miss Hong Kong Pageant winners, given in the format of [English name] - [traditional] / [simplified] ([jyutping] / [pinyin]) - jyutping is one of the most common ways of romanizing Cantonese (the language of Hong Kong) and pinyin is the standardized form of romanizing Mandarin. More under the cut!

I thought this was really fun. It's sort of lke this new trend of Americans stuffing in extra letters to common names, like turning "Jessica" into "Jessieighkah." They almost sound AI generated. List of pageants is from here and I couldn't find a single solid source about Hong Kong names so here's 1, 2 and 3!

Omg you guys I just learned there’s a sequel movie to Louis Koo’s tvb drama A Step into the Past.
Y’all don’t understand. I was obsessed. OBSESSED with that drama in my childhood. And it’s with the original cast. Yes, Louis Koo, Jessica Hsuan, Sonija Kwok, Raymond Lam (looking kinda older than Louis). Holy fucking shit balls what the fuck.
Like 2021 is really out to kill me from happiness. Just as I thought it couldn’t get any better, 2021 was like bitch, hold on, REMEMBER THIS?! If SMAP decides they want to get back together, 2021 is their year! Like come on, y’all already weren’t spring chickens when you disbanded. Even as a loyal fan I don’t know if I can justify a bunch of men in their 50s dancing and singing. Who am I kidding, I’d still watch.
I told y’all I was raised on tvb dramas and HK movies in the 90s and early 2000s. Louis Koo was one of my first ever actor crushes (along with Andy Lau, Tony Leung, and Takeshi Kaneshiro) and I thought it was so scandalous that I was crushing on a man so much older than me. This was before tumblr, livejournal, hell, even fast speed internet. Anyone remember dial up? So your girl literally printed out his pictures and glued them into a PHYSICAL JOURNAL and fangirled about him to my friends in our shared friendship journal. Those poor girls. I guess not much has changed in that respect except now I fangirl to a bunch of strangers on a site that’s barely being held together by a bunch of bandaids and rubber bands ahahaha.
This probably won’t mean much to lots of people because tvb’s heyday was waaaay waaaay back then when the concept of an online fandom barely even existed. But yeah, wow. I was taken back to the past (har har) and all the excitement I felt for that drama and cast with just that short trailer. Crazy. It doesn’t even matter if it’s good or not. The fact that it exists and with that cast is enough to make any fan go wild. The nostalgia is real y’all.

trailer just dropped for the film version of A Step into the Past - Back to the Past .I think it's so exciting that Louis Koo brought the rights to the drama and remade it with THE ORIGINAL CAST ;;;;;; AND USING THE ORGINAL THEME SONG. this truly one of my childhood favorites (lmao every drama was a childhood favorite) and it's so crazy that the drama version was released 20 years ago ;;. Which was also Louis Koo's last drama at TVB before he left.
Also quite excited to see all the old tvb faces like Jessica Hsuan, Raymond Lam , Joyce Tang and Sonija Kwok and even Michelle Saram who was in like 2 tvb dramas.
Can't wait for this release + the film version of A Witness to a Prosecution which recently started filming. It'll be like living 1999-2003 all over again.

Michelle in the Chinese drama 民国恩仇录
I never got that far with this one since I need to actually care for the story to commit to any series in Mandarin (which I need subtitles for). From what little I’ve seen of it its a bit bonkers, and I’m not sure if its bonkers in a good way.
Also, this was supposedly set in the Republic of China era (1912-1949)?
Sure, series. Sure.
It also stars Sonija Kwok if anybody wants to sit through some really OTT costumes.

Here we go again.. I feel like I’m watching Flying Tiger again. Ron Ng’s character being the super strong-headed successful inspector and Bosco W’s character being the good-cop-gone-bad-but-is-good-coz-is-a-UC. How many more times are HK dramas going to keep up with such stuff. Probably is because I just finished 2 comedy dramas (Death by Zero and Al Cuppuccino) and I’m so used to laughing out loud and then suddenly gone all serious here in White War makes me feel so bored out.
Ohhhh! Kenny Kwan!!! Haven’t seen him in a longgggg time. Is it On The First Beat that I saw him act..? If I rmb correctly, he was playing Sonija Kwok’s brother or sth... anyway, he was sooooo amazing here. The emotions he displayed at moment he went berserk in jail and when he went home to receive bad news from his family was amazing. I wasnt expecting him to act that good given how he came out from the music industry. Man these hk people really are talented...
One other thing is I’m so glad the plot took a different path from what I was expecting. Expecting a typical undercover adventure from Jun Hin’s point of view and probably how he eventually take down the gang, it was fresh to actually have the plot take a turn at focusing on how Jun Hin’s turned bad and end up on the wrong side of the law. Even though eventually the plot went back to him being good all along, that secret was kept mum till the end which I totally didn’t expect it.
Omg who is this Chrissy Chau. She was so so cool. There is this really amazing charisma on her that made her really outstanding. Also, she really looked unique and her voice was so special. That was what made her so captivating throughout this show imo.. at the start when she first came out, I find her abit overdressed and her fashion was too much. But towards the end, her dressing toned down abit which was so much better.
That Ga Man girl... well, I just want to ask one thing. Did her makeup artist slap all the white powder all over her face before shooting...? Lol
To conclude, there wasn’t anything fresh in White War. It felt like the plot and action has been made over and over again all the time. Nothing to be amazed at and I’d rather go back to those original old undercover action dramas like Line Walker (the one w Raymond Lam and Charmaine Sheh okay..). One thing I was displeased at White War was the weird Thai and Cantonese conversations both side of the police had w each other. They made it sound like they could do translation themselves and understand what the other party was talking about... that was like ridiculous.. overall, not a very good drama. Just one to pass time.
