Cave In - Final Transmission

As promised in my post a few weeks back about Cave In’s acoustic set at Roadburn, I’m happy to share with you another way that you can support Caleb Scofield’s family in the extended wake of his passing last year. Hydra Head Records is releasing the last recordings that Caleb worked on with the band, including one with his lyrics. It’s bittersweet to be this excited about Cave In material I haven’t heard yet while also knowing it also represents the last work the band did together with Caleb. This will no doubt sell-out and while I don’t typically post unless I have a copy of an album in hand, Cave In holds a special place in my heart and I want to help spread the word as much as I can to support them and their friends in the Scofield family. Day 4/10: Cave In - “Antenna”... Though their album “Jupiter” was what introduced me to the band, this album holds a very special place with me. It’s some of the best song writing compiled into one album. Every song with its unique personality. The talent and tone on this album changed a lot for me as a professional musician and helped me in my personal life in my late teens/early 20’s. Tracks like “Youth Overided”, “Joy Opposites” and “Breath of Water” made me feel sad but comforted. Where songs like “Stained Silver” and “Seafrost” had had some of the greatest riffs known to man, with a stellar tone. Just unbelievable yet undeniable.. I love this band. I miss Caleb... 10-Band on Fave Label: Cave In - Beyond Hypothermia 1998. @hydraheadrecords limited tour edition grey hand numbered 47 of 320. This label was my drug. I remember using dial up back in 98/99 to get shitty pirated rips of Thank God For Worker Bees by Botch, Busy Signal At The Suicide Hotline by Drowningman and Crossbearer by @sonicdeathwall and falling in love with everything this label had to offer. I chased down every HH666 release I could and really started collecting vinyl after that. Friends joked that I should just get their logo tattooed on me. About a decade later, after I had a copy of every release they made, I did get that inked. Cave In - Final Transmission ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @sonicdeathwall @adamcmcgrath @stephenbrodsky @dig_lazarus_dig #calebscofieldforever @hydraheadrecords ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The relatively recent re-emergence of Cave In has been nothing if not bittersweet for me and their legion of fans. In March of 2018, long-time bassist and songwriter Caleb Scofield was killed in a tragic accident, just as they were beginning to put together thoughts and ideas for their first LP since White Silence. The band spent the next year picking up the pieces and folding this event into their collective being. Stephen took over some of Caleb’s role in Old Man Gloom, Nate Newton (who coincidentally replaced Stephen in Converge years ago), took Caleb’s parts in Cave In, and they’ve played a handful of shows since getting their feet back on steady ground. I covered Adam and Stephen’s stripped down and deeply emotional set at the Roadburn festival recently, and if you haven’t yet listened, you need to do so. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Final Transmission is comprised of the remaining demos and partially built out tracks that were the bones for the next album, all of which feature Caleb, including a very touching and sad intro track he sent as a voice message to the band as the opener of the LP. As a huge fan of both the band and their catalog, it’s incredible to finally hear new Cave In music, but it really makes me feel some peripheral grief to know that this came from their last efforts together with Caleb. I mentioned in my last Cave In post that I want to do whatever I can to help Caleb’s wife and daughters so I want to point out that 50% of proceeds from this album go to help support them as they move forward.
