Cave In - Live at Roadburn ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ @stephenbrodsky @adammcgrath ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “All these memories bailing out on me Gone into the void God must need them more anyway” - “Youth Overrided” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’ve ever lost a friend who’s passed away, you know that there exists a permanent space in your heart where their love, their presence, their incalculable impact on your life sits empty but never out of view. Cave In is one of my favorite bands of all time and I was devastated last March when I heard the news that their bassist, Caleb Scofield, had died in a tragic automobile accident. I grew up playing along to their albums and pretending I was one of them jumping around on stage and I never got to see them play live. After Cave In had broken up and gone on to new projects, Caleb began playing in @oldmangloomband, another band I’d obsess about and again somehow never got to see live. His presence was felt in all of his artistic endeavors and listening to Stephen talk a bit between the songs on this special acoustic live set at the Roadburn Festival was like listening to friends recount the poignant memories of a loved one at an informal wake. It’s raw, it’s emotional, and it’s perfectly imperfect, just like the most devastating art typically is. Stephen and Adam play several songs over the span of their career with Caleb and the soft treatment of even their heavy songs like Big Riff lend a bittersweet combo of beauty and sadness during what had to have been an emotionally exhausting set for them. I wanted to point you towards the Caleb Scofield Memorial fund page but it is closed for now, so we will post again in the future when we have new options. For now, know that some proceeds from the sales of this album will go to support Caleb’s wife and children. I feel privileged to have known Caleb Scofield. Hydra Head certainly would not have existed in the same capacity without Cave In, and my twenties probably would not have been spent working for bands I love and revere. His music is legendary: the stylistic shapeshifting of Cave In that’s become an influential pillar of heavy rock, the weirdo heaviness of Old Man Gloom, and the wildly under appreciated experimentation of Zozobra. While he’ll be remembered for and through the songs he played, I will always remember him for his kindness. I feel lucky to have been creatively entangled with his work. I’m grateful that I got to design shirts and posters for Cave In and Old Man Gloom. When I made the music video for OMG’s “The Lash” a few years ago, (my first “serious” music vid, which is ironic considering OMG’s facebook presence) his praise meant a lot to me. I’m honored to have shared a stage with him when Andraus opened for Old Man Gloom. The last time I saw him was a couple years ago at a festival in North Carolina. We talked about tour van music and sang Savage Garden. When we were leaving I told him I had to try and make it back to the place I was staying before I shit my pants. He said I was a sick man as he laughed his ass off and we walked our separate ways. I sent him the last video I made, and he was one of the few people to reply. He said “Amazing, fine work.” That was my last interaction with him. All I can say is the same. Amazing, fine work. . . Caleb is survived by his wife Jen and their children Desmond, 10, and Sydney, 7. Cave In - Final Transmission

As promised in my post a few weeks back about Cave In’s acoustic set at Roadburn, I’m happy to share with you another way that you can support Caleb Scofield’s family in the extended wake of his passing last year. Hydra Head Records is releasing the last recordings that Caleb worked on with the band, including one with his lyrics. It’s bittersweet to be this excited about Cave In material I haven’t heard yet while also knowing it also represents the last work the band did together with Caleb. This will no doubt sell-out and while I don’t typically post unless I have a copy of an album in hand, Cave In holds a special place in my heart and I want to help spread the word as much as I can to support them and their friends in the Scofield family.
