These Poster Mags have been something of an odd detour in this read-through and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you don’t fully understand what they are. I’ll be honest, I never owned any of these, so I don’t really know for sure either, but I believe that they’re a giant poster with stuff printed on the back of the poster? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong there
Sadly, the scans I’m using don’t include the actual poster, so we only get to see it via the preview on the cover
In the first two Poster Mags, what was included were reviews and previews of Sonic games and cartoons of the time. The only reason I talked about the first issue was because of the Sonic history significance of the prototype AoStH images. But from here on out, each Poster Mag will include a short comic. Not all of them are focused on Sonic, but this one is, so we’re going to take a look at it

Sonic the Comic reading order
Ya wanna read Sonic the Comic? Luckily for you keeping track of the side books is nowhere near a mind boggling task as it was for Archie. Partially due to there being a lot less to keep track of (2 Yearbooks, 9 Poster Mags, and 6 specials) and also since a lot of the side book content tends to be standalone, with the main book’s anthology structure allowing for easy plopping things in without breaking up the flow of whatever is going on in the main book. Enough bits and bobs of relevant release info has potential to be in pages not included in online scans that I might edit this list with more info when sources of said potential info (most notably Sonic the Comic the Podcast) get there.
Full list under the read more with explanations:
1993 Yearbook (generally referred to as 1991/92 yearbook by online sources due to a misunderstanding involving the copyright dates)
Release Placement: Exact release date unknown; good chance of the interior contents being produced before StC itself, but folks actually there at the time (like the guys from Sonic the Comic the Podcast) recall it actually came out after StC began (likely in the summer like both british comic yearbooks/annuals) Actually published by Grandreams, not Fleetway, though some of the creators involved would also work on Fleetway sonic.
Optimal Placement: Either before you begin, or if you want actual proper StC to be your first impression, between issues 6 and 7.
Sonic the Poster Mag 1
Release Placement: Advertised as being “out now” in issue 14, so most likely released the same time.
Optimal Placement: Does not contain actual comic content (but is a neat curiosity worth checking out), so might as well read it when it came out.
Sonic the Poster Mag 2
Release Placement: Same day as issue 16
Optimal Placement: Again doesn't actually have any comic content, may as well read it in release placement.
Sonic the Poster Mag 3
Release Placement: Between issues 20 and 21.
Optimal Placement: No need to deviate from release placement.
Warning: contains a gross racist character design unlike anything else seen in the series
Eternal Champions Special
Release Placement: Between issues 21 and 22
Optimal Placement: Either before or after the first Eternal Champions serial (so either between issues 18 and 19 or between 24 or 25). I personally lean towards the latter. (Though I do find the flow it gives doing it in release placement interesting)
Sonic the Poster Mag 4
Release Placement: Between issues 24 and 25
Optimal Placement: No need to deviate from release placement.
1994 Yearbook (generally referred to online as the 1992/93 Yearbook)
Release Placement: Unknown, but it would've been in the summer of '94.
Optimal Placement: Anywhere between 28 and 33.
Sonic the Poster Mag 5 and Sonic the Summer Special (1994)
Release Placement: Between issues 28 and 29
Optimal Placement: The Summer Special could be moved to between issues 32 and 33 given that the knuckles strip in it leads into the Sonic 3 adaptation. That's also apparently closer to when the Poster Mag was actually written in relation to the main book. If you do both the Poster Mag and Summer Special next to each other I'd say Poster Mag first if only because the back cover advertises the Summer Special.
Sonic the Poster Mag 6
Release Placement: Advertised as being “out now” within the pages of issue 35, so either the same time or the previous week.
Optimal Placement: Story takes place Chronologically between issues 34 and 35
Sonic the Poster Mag 7
Release Placement: Between issues 37 and 38
Optimal Placement: No need to deviate from release placement.
Sonic the Poster Mag 8
Release Placement: Same day as issue 40.
Optimal Placement: No need to deviate from release placement.
Sonic the Poster Mag 9
Release Placement: Same day as issue 42
Optimal Placement: Between 42 and 43
Sonic Holiday Special (1995)
Release Placement: Issue 53 tells you to “look out for it” and is described as "Out Now" in issue 54
Optimal Placement: Between 53 and 54
NOTE: NOT A SIDE BOOK BUT:
"The Big Decision" (the main strip from issue 76) appears to have meant to be intended to be the strip immediately after "The Return of Chaotix" (the serial that ended with issue 71); so one thing you could do is read the story (and just this story, not the rest of the issue) after you finish issue 71
Knuckles Knock Out Special
Release Placement: The original slated release date was between issues 75 and 76 but it ended up getting delayed to releasing the same day as issue 79
Optimal Placement: Chronologically the story takes place after "The Big Decision" (which discussed earlier) and before "The Ghost Ship" (the Knuckles serial that began in issue 74). If you took the previous advice of moving "The Big Decision", then a good spot to read it would be after issue 73
Sonic Holiday Special (1996)
Release Placement: Between issues 81 and 82
Optimal Placement: Between issues 79 and 80
Total Sonic Special
Release Placement: Between issues 160 and 161
Optimal Placement: Issue is pure reprints and the only "scans" are of its cover, so there really isn't a place to "put" it.

Part 2 of this post! This piece was also used as a cut out poster in the back of the mag! . The cool folks at @kerrangmagazine_ hit me up to do their cover and interior artwork to celebrate @gerardway (of #MyChemicalRomance) & @gabriel_ba and their new series on @Netflix @umbrellaacad @umbrellaacademylat #THEUMBRELLAACADEMY based on the comic book series published by @darkhorsecomics I was stoked and couldn't say no to such a cool opportunity. Thanks @beechinternational . By chance, this is the 4th project I've done associated with #GerardWay. . I ended up doing 3 #illustrations for the project. They requested that I draw Gerard from the "Revenge…" album era of his life. Since it's a weekly #magazine the deadline was INSANE! I had a little over a week to turn in #sketches, get approval and then turn in finished pieces. Normally it takes me a week to #design and #illustrate a #poster. 1 poster! One!! That's how my brain and hands work. Somehow I was able to cram 3 illustrations into 1 week. My brain STILL hurts but I'm VERY PROUD of completing the project and the final results. . I wrote a long-assed blog post on my blog (link in bio)! http://www.brianewing.com that goes into the process and self-deprecation I pride myself on. You should READ IT! There’s a CONTEST at the end! . Let me know what you think of the post! Should I do more of that stuff (where I tell stories like an old person)or do I type too much?! . The #heartshapedbox prints will be going out this weekend! They look awesome! @vgkids did a great job once again! . I suck at posting lately. Kinda slammed right now with #DeadlinesRuleEverythingAroundMe for the upcoming summer! My Dirty Head is at Failure status as I stare at Metallic Awesomeness inside my Sonic Temple. If I’m lucky - it’ll be quite the Creep Show! Yet more amazing comics debuting at tomorrow’ Comic Arts Brooklyn show!
Roopert August Lipp Revival House 56 pages, 8.5″ X 11″ 2 color offset
$10
The long-awaited debut by comics virtuoso, August Lipp. Perhaps you’ve been fortunate to see glimpses of his work in esteemed anthologies such as Smoke Signals, for example. Now, one can evince the full dexterity of his talent with the exuberant saga, Roopert. Roopert is excited to return to school after a summer of splendid adventures! His best chums will all be there: Clyve the shy badger, Benji the other, slightly shorter bear, Hannah the ballsy fox, Timothy the average frog, Clarissa the dentally-advantaged crocodile and many more. Hey, this school is a real ZOO! What kind of antics will they get up to when the bell rings and Miss Julienne the human’s 6th grade class begins? Irreverence and beastly nature are masked by overzealous displays of etiquette as the child animals struggle for agency in the face of less-than-responsible authority figures. Follow along as this comic meanders through Roopert’s first action-packed day of middle school! Adult supervision recommended. published by Revival House Press!

Book of Daze by E.A. Bethea. $6, 40 pages. Color cover, black and white interior, printed on newsprint.
“I first discovered Bethea’s stuff almost twenty years ago, she is one of the people whose work made me finally commit to comics as my medium of choice. With her barbed, nervous line and blunt writing style, she’s like a Duchampian voice calling for comics revolt. Her comics call out to us that no matter how damaged or how much of an outsider someone is, comics is our birthright.” -Josh Bayer, author of Theth
Book of Daze by E.A. Bethea is the kind of book DOMINO exists to publish. I first found Bethea’s work lying around an apartment I was visiting. I picked it up and from that moment on, have never forgotten it. As I began to read her dense pages, I was overwhelmed by the straightforward emotional statements and startlingly precise mind behind the sequences. In one moment, Bethea’s comics would acknowledge pain and disappointment, then turn to explain it away or justify things, only to finally confront the problem from a new angle. On the next page, simple pleasures became the focus, romantic notions embraced. Later on in the book cynical approaches to anything and everything were duly considered. All of this managed to congeal as Bethea kept another strong cloud hanging over it all: a refusal to shy away from an unashamed embrace of the full panorama of life.
Bethea, a simple interpretation might offer, chronicles the web of living in the world with a heart and a mind sometimes at odds and sometimes simpatico. But Bethea gives us something more complex: at times, the work feels dead-pan as it shifts from exhilaration to resignation without a change in visual presentation, but it’s here where we have a guide to the heart of Bethea’s project. The often uniform nature of the pages and the highly non-uniform nature of what is contained within become a catalog of days or weeks or years. One page offers a subdued period in life, while the next (seemingly) similar page offers a day full of regret. Bethea talks about her work relating to cinema, specifically calling attention to what happens between one of her panels and the next. The shifts in emotion and carefully chosen images alongside highly precise language feel like walking into a film where the entire crew–from director to actor to gaffer—united in one mind to make something highly exquisite.

This incredibly odd opening shot radiates that kind of StC weirdness that I’m more familiar with. We get a zone that isn’t canon to the games, called “Forest Hill”, which is a break from Kitching’s preference of using Sonic 2 zones in the main book. As the comic goes on, more games will give us more zones, but a lot like the others comics, StC will start to favour setting stories in its own locations. As a side note, I did a quick check to make sure that Forest Hill wasn't from some Game Gear game I'm unfamiliar with and, it isn't, but both Sonic X and the IDW Comics have also included a Forest Hill, so it's funny how this generic location name has appeared in multiple spin-offs, including one not from the west Anyway, the setup for this story is that these poor locals of a gold-mining town are being terrorised by a gang
Let’s get the nightmare fuel going, shall we? This sequence is genuinely horrifying to look at, showing the child of this family being taken by a robot to be used as its battery. StC has never shied away from how horrifying that whole concept is
The events in this opening are actually a flashback, with the family recounting the tale to Sonic, Tails and Porker. For some reason, Tails is wearing a black jacket like Porker in this story - it seems that the artist kind of forgets that in a few panels, so sometimes Tails is wearing it and sometimes he isn’t. We don’t question Tails’s fashion. But also, even if it isn’t in the main pages of the book, this is one of the first times we’ve seen this trio working together as a team, making them feel more like the Freedom Fighters. Johnny Lightfoot will also being joining them in that regard very soon, even if he isn’t in this issue
As the team sets out to find the stolen children, we get another glimpse of their dynamic, with Porker using his technology to track, while Tails looks from the skies. If they are going to be Sonic’s team, then we as the audience need to see what they’re bringing to the table and these three panels do an effective job of establishing that without drawing too much attention to it
Sonic finds the villain and there’s what I assume is a nod to a source material I’m not familiar with. StC did a lot of these pop culture references and, as a kid, many of them went over my head. They continue to go over my head now, but it doesn’t get in the way of the story. What matters is that the Coconuts robots could get blown up by the bomb and that’d be the kids used as their batteries going up along with them Also, I have to hold my hand up and admit that, whenever I think of Coconuts, the AoStH version is the first thing to come to mind. So it’s weird to see that name attached to some very different monkey badniks here
Kid Cruel (that's our villain of the day) heads off to tell Robotnik that he’s caught Sonic and claim the bounty, but as soon as he’s gone, Sonic takes the chance to bust the badniks and grab the bombs
…Woah, I thought they were going to show Sonic get rid of the bombs in time, but he really does get blasted by them! That shot of him diving towards Kid Cruel with parts of his spikes burned off is intense!
The comic ends with our heroes whisking the kids away before Robotnik gets here to unleash his anger at a false alarm I went into this expecting that the Poster Mag stories would be shorter than the ones in the regular StC issues, but this ended up being a similar length. It genuinely felt just like reading a standard StC issue and I hope that continues to be the case for the rest of the Poster Mags. There isn’t much to say about this one, just to restate that I’m glad the Freedom Fighters are starting to be used more as Sonic’s team. We only have three of them for now, but the rest are soon to follow. Very soon indeed. Like, next issue soon, for one of them

Sonic the Comic Reading Order Checklist
Okay, so I put together a quick reading order for how I hope to tackle this project, because (in my admittedly brief search) I couldn't find one that also included the various specials. The reason for this is probably because a chunk of the specials are reprints or not Sonic-related, but there are also a lot that have unique Sonic stories in, so I wanted to include them if I can. My main problem is that I don't know how easy they'll be to find compared to the mainline StC issues, but hopefully I'll be able to track them down
If anyone can either recommend where to find the specials or else give me advice to what might be a better reading order, please do let me know. This list is by no means set in stone, so I'd be more than happy to change it on the advice of any wise StC sages:
Sonic the Comic Issues 1-13
Poster Mag 1
Sonic the Comic Issues 14-16
Poster Mag 2
Sonic the Comic Issues 17-20
Sonic Beats The Badniks (Will most-likely skip this, looks to be only reprints)
Sonic Spin Attack (Same as above)
Poster Mag 3
Sonic the Comic Issues 21-25
Poster Mag 4 (Might skip as it looks like it's only about Shinobi, not Sonic?)
Sonic the Comic Issues 26-28
Sonic the Summer Special
Poster Mag 5
Sonic the Comic Issues 29-35
Poster Mag 6
Sonic the Comic Issues 36-37
Poster Mag 7 (Might skip, looks to be only about Streets of Rage)
Sonic the Comic Issues 38-40
Poster Mag 8
Sonic the Comic Issues 41-42
Poster Mag 9
Sonic the Comic Issues 43-55
Sonic Holiday Special 1
Sonic the Comic Issues 56-79
Knuckles Knock-Out
Sonic the Comic Issues 80-81
Sonic Holiday Special 2
Sonic the Comic Issues 82-160
Total Sonic Special (Looks to be only reprints so might skip)
Sonic the Comic Issues 161-184 (This is the end of original stories)
Sonic the Comic Issues 185-223 (These are all reprints, but I'll probably do spotlight posts for the new covers)
#sam observes sonic#sonic the comic#reading order#reference#also shout out to tumblr for deleting this post#and forcing me to redo about 40 mins worth of work :)

Anyway, it’s time to wrap up this special with the second part of Doctor Sun and-
-Yikes! If I never have to look at that face again it’ll be too soon!
But it looks like Stripes doesn’t want to come back home, even knowing that his father sent Sonic & Tails to get him. It’s a bit baffling, since we still haven’t seen exactly why these mobians want to stay with Doctor Sun, but the next page goes on to explain that
We get this montage of the duo being shown around the place, which promises to be a safe haven in these troubling times of the Robotnik conquest. It’s probably not too surprising that a Sonic comic’s idea of a good time is reading comics and playing Sonic games, but I can’t say I disagree with them there
But don’t worry, once you’re fully ready to commit, you can pass through this door that I’m sure won’t result in you losing your free will and being turned into a robot. He might’ve gotten away with it too, if he hadn’t slipped up with that egg pun there
Who’d have guessed it? Doctor Sun is actually Doctor Robotnik!
We get a couple of pages of Sonic fighting Robotnik, before he makes his escape and the whole place goes up in flames, but not before Sonic manages to rescue everyone who was kidnapped. And that’s the end of that! Fittingly for his last appearance, Stripes the Badger is waving goodbye at the bottom there With that, the special has been wrapped up. I enjoyed it a lot! It’s the biggest comic that I’ve covered on this blog so far and it was great to see a lot of the supporting cast getting their own stories. I’d say that Doctor Sun was probably the weakest of those stories, so it’s a shame that one ended up being the two-parter, but both the Tails and Robotnik stories were great and I liked giving Knuckles a little prelude to the events of Sonic 3
This blog is technically still on hiatus while I wrap up another non-Sonic project (hopefully soon), but next time, we’ll be taking a look at the 5th Poster Mag, before returning to the regular issues. The poster mags are like the opposite of these specials, with only one single comic to cover, so it probably won’t take as long
