SONIC POLL RESULTS

Hello people from this poll! This is a breakdown of the poll results with evidence! Please note that this only included events from the games. But before that lemme preface this with I Did Not expect the poll to get *checks notes* 8,639 votes?!!?? I expected like 150 max. So that’s why some response were kinda exaggerated or just straight up wrong because I’m incapable of counting. So here’s the results!

Option 1: Shadow the Hedgehog gets crucified (TRUE from Sonic 06)

Ok so this is what I meant when I said I exaggerated some stuff. No he does not get nailed to a cross. However, he does get put in T-pose jail.

Considering the context of being forsaken by humanity after the world ends, and that you can’t really nail a guy to a wooden cross in a fiery wasteland, this is pretty damn close to a crucifixion (cyber crucifixion? It is 200 years in the future). I may have exaggerated but I am prepared to stand by it.

Option 2: Sonic gets thrown into a maximum security prison (TRUE from Sonic Adventure 2)

This was way more known compared to option 1. So during SA2 sonic gets framed for stuff he didn’t do as a coverup and he gets imprisoned on Prison Island

I kinda don’t blame people for not knowing this one since this game was kinda boring, Tails gets captured by the villains of this game and they turn him into a robot to fight Sonic. However Tails was able to circumvent their brainwashing and keep his free will.

Ok so I fucked up this one. I only counted the Sonic Storybook Games of which there are two (in which sonic is sent to worlds based around the Arabian Nights and Arthurian Legend). However Sonic has been thrown into different dimensions both in Sonic Rush Adventure and Sonic Forces and probably some others I’m forgetting about. That’s honestly my bad BUT I’m technically still right

This is probably the best line in the series since Eggman is being completely serious asking this to his arch-nemesis with super speed. Come on dude.

Why people are excited over Princess Elise’s (brief) return

Short answer: the new design/art style that Sonic Channel gave her looks nice and she’s being treated with as much dignity as the rest of the Sonic cast for the first time since Sonic 06′s release nearly 17 years ago

Long answer:

Every year, Sonic Channel (the official Japanese website for Sonic the Hedgehog) puts out character illustrations for each month. Sometimes it’s just art of the character posing, sometimes they’re actually doing something (Sonic celebrating his birthday, Amy walking in the rain, Cream going trick-or-treating, etc.). For 2023, Sonic Channel is posting a specific themed series of artwork called “Isekai Ogiri” that depicts two characters in silly, non-canon scenarios; part of the appeal of these illustrations is that one of the two characters in each artwork is voted for by fans. So far we’ve seen Gadget (AKA Buddy AKA the custom character from Sonic Forces) confessing his love to an Egg Pawn in a scene straight out of a slice-of-life anime, Shadow and Infinite as rival idol musicians, a cutely-dressed Blaze visiting fortune teller Amy, Tikal and Chaos running their own pizza place, and most recently as of this post, Silver the figure-skating coach and his student Elise. (I’m linking back to the original SC pages b/c they put out a message on their official Twitter urging people to link back to the original SC pages/tweets, otherwise they might be inclined to stop making this art; if you want to understand the little stories that come with each illustration, I’m afraid you’ll have to put up with janky Google Translate translations.)

So, yeah, Princess Elise of notorious Sonic 06 infamy, the one video game journalists always seem eager to remind you kissed a dead anthropomorphic hedgehog, recently appeared in one of these illustrations. And people lost their minds, but this time, with excitement.

But if Princess Elise was/is so despised, why do people seem genuinely excited to see her now?

Well there’s 2 reasons for that: 1) the way in which she was drawn, and 2) the fact that she was even a contender to appear in this art series in the first place

1) Human characters appearing in the Sonic series has always been a source of discourse among fans. Some, like myself, enjoy seeing humans coexist alongside a cast of furries, robots, and other assorted beings; others believe there shouldn’t be any humans (except Eggman) in Sonic at all. They’ve been variously depicted as realistic people (Sonic 06) and with more cartoonish Pixar-esque proportions (Sonic Unleashed). From my perspective, what seemed to make people dislike Elise’s original design was that in addition to looking out-of-place next to the cartoony Sonic (people often say that she looks like she belongs in Final Fantasy), her facial expressions were quite bland and difficult to read. While I would argue that Sonic and his friends also had very little facial expression in 06, it’s much easier to notice with Elise (and to a lesser degree, 06 Eggman) due to her more realistic face. It evokes a feeling in some people known as the Uncanny Valley. In the Isekai Ogiri’s April illustration, Elise is depicted in a new style that leans more towards cartoony; some have compared it to Puyo Puyo, others have said she resembles the humans from Balan Wonderworld. Either way, most fans, at least those on Twitter and Tumblr, have praised Elise’s new “look” because her new proportions (large head and hands, big eyes that are easier to read) make her more closely fit in with other Sonic characters. She feels less like a Final Fantasy character and more like a Sonic character.

(With that said, not everyone was automatically bothered by Elise’s realistic 06 design because human beings do not perceive everything in the exact same way b/c art is subjective)

2) Part of how Elise even wound up in this illustration is not just because people wanted to see her again, but because Sonic Team themselves decided to treat her with dignity by making her an option to vote for. And she was up against Merlina from Sonic and the Black Knight, a well-regarded character among fans and one of the few female villains in the entire series!! The poll they were in for the April pic was very close!!

During the late 2000s following Sonic 06′s release, Silver had his fanbase, but a lot of people still viewed him as annoying, and it took several years of game reappearances for him to become a less divisive character (my source: I’ve been a Sonic fan with internet access since ~2003, the way he’s depicted in the Sonic Paradox shorts is actually what a lot of people thought of him at the time). Also, he was still an anthropomorphic Sonic animal, so naturally people would be quicker to accept him as part of the cast.

But Elise? The human? While I doubt she was originally intended to be a recurring character, even if 06 WAS supposed to be a reboot, her portrayal in that game was so widely despised by critics and fans alike that she was thereafter relegated to rare cameos (like being on a collectible card in Sonic Rivals 2) and jokes at her expense (in LEGO Dimensions, when Sonic interacts with Lumpy Space Princess, he says, “Last time I met a princess, I...we...you know, I don't quite remember, never mind!” in a hurried and embarrassed voice). Elise is hardly the only notoriously-disliked Sonic character, but because she only appeared in one game in a non-playable role (I’m not counting the stages where Sonic carries her), her biggest positive accomplishments--unlocking her cell herself instead of waiting for Sonic to save her, jumping from Eggman’s ship with zero hesitation, and reviving Sonic--are often overshadowed by the moments where she just stands there praying, gets kidnapped, and kisses a dead hedgehog just in case you forgot for the 17th year in a row, leading people to view her as an inherently bad character. Because she is also a girl, and video games were and still are a largely male-dominated culture loaded with toxic masculinity, it’d be ignorant to say the vitriol towards Elise wasn’t charged with sexism and misogyny on some level.

But as an aspiring writer and someone who hates wasted character potential, my personal opinion is that characters, SPECIFICALLY in ongoing franchises like Sonic, are not inherently bad, it’s the ways in which they’re USED that can make them LOOK good or bad, and they don’t deserve to be locked away forever all because of one bad interpretation. But unlike Silver who has been in multiple games since 06 (or even Mephiles, who was added to the Sonic Forces mobile game last year as an unlockable character), Elise has only ever had 06. Thus, people only have that one interpretation of her to go off of, because not everyone obsessively rewrites her in their headcanons or hunts down fan fiction where Elise is characterized with actual effort.

And like I said, I don’t think Elise was created with longevity in mind, but it’s specifically because critics and fans alike continue to beat this dead horse that you have people like me saying “What if she came back tho”

Compare the hate Elise gets to the Deadly Six, characters whose debut game was not seen as quite a colossal failure as 06 but still had a story that was almost universally panned, particularly in regards to its character writing. While the Deadly Six (or just Zavok) have yet to appear in a game written by Ian Flynn, they’ve been recurring characters in the IDW Sonic comics and, while still pretty universally disliked, have been regarded by some fans as being tolerable in the comics due to how Flynn utilizes them there. (I wrote a whole other post speculating about the Deadly Six’s characterization in IDW if you feel like reading that lol.) In this sense, the current Sonic writers are genuinely trying to make even the most undesired characters palatable for the audience. I think it’ll be a long while before most people fully warm up to the D6, but the intent is there.

Meaning that the same could hypothetically be done for Elise, if this illustration is any indication that SEGA is beginning to wholeheartedly embrace their past, even the ugly parts

I’m not expecting anything huge from this, and I don’t expect her to suddenly become a major recurring character, because this illustration is nothing more than Sonic Team testing the waters to see how people react to them unironically including Elise in non-canon material. But look at all the fan art people are drawing of Elise in her skating outfit. Look at how fans are reacting. If, sometime after this, Elise were to appear in even a minor role in the IDW comics, in this new art style, with Ian Flynn, Evan Stanley, or even a guest writer like Daniel Barnes at the helm, I would welcome it with open arms, because I trust them to handle Princess Elise’s character with genuine investment and care.

(But until then I have my own ideas that I’m a bit hesitant to share for.....reasons~)

Lori-Ki's in @sonic-oc-showdown ! Last time, we all did a short Q&A - @bunnymajo asked if we're doing it again this year, and I said - OMG, YES!

Lori-Ki is a once-great, now minimum-wage odd-jobs worker on the ground floor of the Dark Egg Legion, doing dirty jobs as-and-when commanded. This is the bane of her existence, having been a once-legendary sniper. When Enerjak Knuckles tormented the Dark Legion, she was part of the surviving echidnas to lose her cybernetics, having run-of-the-mill cybernetics installed when Dimitri joined the Dark Legion with Eggman's forces.

In her past life, she had a cybernetic eye, and hearing which was unparalleled. She was a powerhouse; now reduced to a regular echidna with titanium legs, and a ridiculous multitool installed into her hands.

✨- How did you come up with the OC’s name? Lori-Ki initially had a much more colourful colourscheme, of blues, oranges, and greens! She was named for the bird; the Lorikeet! Of course, the hyphonated name comes with the territory of being an Archie echidna.

🌼 - How old are they? (Or approximate age range) Lori-Ki is 26 years old.

🌺- Do they have any love interest(s)? She likes to think that she has a long-con love/hate thing going on with Eggman, that he is madly in love with her. She has this elaborate plot of how exactly she is going to turn him down, she's got a wedding planner diary for it. He has no idea who she is, and could not tell her apart from the next Legionnaire.

🍕 - What is their favorite food? Lori-Ki enjoys a good coconut. Not USUALLY wrestled from a chao which found itself floating through the Twilight Zone, but ..

💼 - What do they do for a living? Lori-Ki does odd jobs for the Dark Egg Legion; the combined forces of the Dark Legion's might, with Eggman's technological know-how. She finds this an insult, given that before her cybernetics were stripped, she had been a highly competent and high-ranking sniper for the Legion. She had once sported an impressive cybernetic eye, and unparalleled enhanced hearing; after Enerjak wiped her circuits for flesh and blood, she found herself subject to the mass-producing legionisation under Eggman's command, which gave her standard cybernetics; robotic legs, and an embarrassingly goofy mutli-tool between her left thumb and pinkie.

🎹 - Do they have any hobbies? She likes to make electronic music with Trearddur. She sits and gives her thoughts and opinions whilst he mixes it, occasionally offering vocals and new sounds for the recordings. Sometimes, she'll play a little music to add to the mix.

🎯 -What do they do best? Vindication! She used to be an incredible shot; since Enerjak removed her cybernetics, she had been trying to get them restored; Eggman wanted nothing to do with such a thing, barely even noticing her presence. This spurred into a vindicative obession...

🥊 -What do they love to do? What do they hate to do? She loves being paired up with Trearddur, and getting work done. They're thick as thieves, and used to be an incredibly efficient powerhouse duo in making the Legion run smoothly. This was a major source of pride. Anything she can do that makes things easier for everybody makes her happy.

❤️ - What is one of your OC’s best memories? Meeting Trearddur! They had met in their early 20's both grabbing a drink, and had become thick as thieves in an instant. Discovering that they were both on security, they fast became nigh inseperable, even their cybernetics slotting hand-in-hand.

✂️ - What is one of your OC’s worst memories? Being held at the mercy of Enerjak Knuckles was an incredibly traumatic event for Lori-Ki. The sheer power on show was terrifying; to be stripped of her cybernetics which were very much a part of her person was like losing a part of herself. Losing the abilities she previously had was incredibly debilitating for her; to have them replaced with unsuitable robotic parts was life-changing in the worst way.

🧊 - Is their current design the first one? Sort of! Yesn't. I tend to go through a design process over a few days, when working on OC's. I will create a few variations, and refine it from there.

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC? We were messing around in Sonic Projector RP, a Sonic fangame - we decided to go with the Dark Egg Legion, to mix things up a little. After messing around in Press Gardens crushing crates for rings, we fell in love with the idea of echidnas who were once great, now doing odd dirty jobs for Eggman.

🌂 - What genre do they belong in? Science Fantasy, and something about an allegorical hatred for the British Government's poor dealings with disabled people. (oh, you didn't get that subtext? ... Look, look with your special eyes?)

💚 - What is your OC’s gender identity and sexuality? Lori-Ki is 'maybe a girl, iunno' who is openly bisexual.

🙌 - How many sibling does your OC have? None! Lori-Ki is an only child.

🍎 - What is the OC’s relationship w/their parents like? She doesn't much know her parents; it's not unheard of in the Dark Legion - the Twilight Zone was unforgiving and harsh, and many children grew up in foster care.

🧠 - What do you like most about the OC? She is fantastic to roleplay as! Her combative wit and short temper which fades away to a 'NO JK JK JK LOLOLOL I heart your fucking makeup oh my god I love your hair' -- She's all of the passive agressiveness I dropped when I stopped being a scene teen. Gawd. HORRIBLE person to be around, but I LOVE her.

✏️ - How often do you draw/write about the OC? About once a month, at least. Mostly, we RP and LARP as her; that happens much more often. We'll brainstorm her quite often!

💎 - Do you ever see yourself killing off the OC? Her death would be reeeeally drab, symbolically; I'd prefer not to.

💀 - Does your OC have any phobias? She is terrified of overestimating her abilities; her brain has not quite caught up with the fact that she isn't as able as she was with her old cybernetics. She oft finds herself in sticky situations due to overestimating her sight and hearing, still learning her new limitations.

🍩 -Who is your OC’s arch-nemesis or rival? She thinks that it's Eggman. He's never even heard of her.

🎓 - How long have you had the OC? Wooh, only a year by now!

Realizing that several people in this tournament are actually listed as parents to other serial adopters. That made me really happy. (I’m running this poll because I love found family and seeing that theme continue in other characters, almost like a lineage, was just a blast. It may also be a future season of this tournament)

Tails' SLI Journey

Alright !! Lengthy Post Time. I was spurred to make this post by the person who mentioned on my character arc post that Tails was absent from it. And since I'm absolutely awful at clarifying anything unless prompted*, I thought I might do so here and explain the deal with Tails, considering his journey ended up being different in comparison to the rest of Team Sonic.

*Which brings me to say that my asks (under the "♡ Confessional ♡" tab) are open, and if anyone wants to ask anything regarding this AU, feel free to do so ! I know that we're so far into this project that some crucial details do go amiss when posting about it, so if you want to ask about particular characters, setting, lore etc., go for it ! Because it does help expand on the world and organise my thoughts a lot hehe <3

Tails... unfortunately did not have the easiest nor the best journey on the island.

He came in on day 1, along with Sonic, Knuckles and Vector, forming the og boys of the series. It's quickly established that Sonic and Tails know each other and are best friends on the outside (and had been since they were kids). Tails and Knuckles connected early on due to Tails' working in Mystic Ruins, a location with significant ties to Knuckles' culture.

Picked at random, Tails was coupled up with Honey and they did not get off to a good start. Their interactions tended to be awkward and forced, not to mention Tails' habit of being very unobtrusive came as a disadvantage to him.

Initial couple aside, Tails had his eye on Zooey, who happened to be coupled up with Knuckles. But, of course, Tails is a shy boy with low self-confidence and although Sonic encourages him to get out there, it took him a lot of effort to work up the courage to talk to a girl.

Tails sadly finds himself stuck in a loop of interacting with solely his friends (Sonic, Knuckles and Amy, primarily) when they're around, and attempting to pay Honey some respect.

Then, in comes the complications.

Honey has her attention on Sonic and Sonic entertains this interest (with Tails' reluctant permission), while Knuckles is cracking on with Zooey. The other two girls, Amy and Sticks, Tails paid no mind to, valuing them more as friends (especially Amy, who took on a motherly role for him).

Tails is left utterly disrespected in the face of both Sonic and Knuckles' actions despite the situations and feels hopeless, as his connections in the villa are being taken by two boys far more appealing than himself.

In later days, Tails continues to talk to Honey out of courtesy, but eventually begins to interact more with Zooey. And whilst Sonic and Amy are in the midst of a villa-typical drama, Tails is given the perfect opportunity to get to know Zooey more as a diversion from the chaos.

Tails spends the next couple of days chatting to Zooey, pushing past his meek nature and Zooey does admit she was interested in him from day dot but wasn't sure her attraction was romantic or platonic. She acknowledges and respects his slow-burning romantic style.

Tragically, Tails' story comes to a close at the end of episode 6, where he was voted off the island and he leaves with unresolved business.

Although, when he makes his return for the reunion episode after the season's end, it becomes known that Tails and Zooey did meet up on the outside and went on a few dates with one another, hinting at the potential of a relationship. All's well that ends well ?

Tails' journey did not quite pan out as best as any of them (or us) would have hoped, but hey, that's life. Sometimes things happen in their own weird way, in their own weird time.

Though your presence in the series was brief, may you, Miles "Tails" Prower, never be forgotten <3

can you tell me abt the political structure of rural chinese farming communities. also i hate sonic the hedgehog and this ask is the furthest thing from sonic-related please do not mention him 🙏

During the Reform Era (which began after Mao's death in the late 1970s), the Chinese government was forced to reckon with a lack of state capacity to supervise and legislate China's some 700 000~ villages. State capacity refers to a state's ability to govern its territory, which in nearly all large countries tends to be reduced in remote communities far away from urban centres. The government needed a solution to deal with budding rural problems, such as the inability of local authorities to properly allocate funds to infrastructure/farming projects as well as allegations of corruption due to a lack of transparency around land rentals to enterprises. There was a lot going on and the central government simply didn't have the resources to handle it on their own.

It is worth noting that farm land in China is collectivized, meaning that farmers do not own the land they work on. Families typically lease the land from local authorities for periods up to 30 years, but this land can be redistributed on an as-needed basis. What the land is used for and how it is allocated to villagers is decided by local authorities.

To deal with their inability to address these problems, the CCP/CPC (whatever you want to call it) decided to experiment with grassroots democracy in villages. Rather than spend money to install more offices and allocate more resources to the villages, they allowed open elections so village committee members would be held accountable to the local population. This removes the burden of supervision from the state and places it on the villagers.

The village committee is responsible for nearly all village issues. They deal with land allocation, economic policies, social services, and all that stuff. So, they are effectively the local government. Its members and chairman (head) are voted for in each election.

The election process is pretty standard. Candidates may be nominated by the village committee, local Party officials, or even by themselves. Votes are conducted via secret ballot. The CCP/CPC provides some guidance and oversight over the electoral process, and you can allege that electoral interference is possible, but it is worth noting that the government actually wants these elections to work in order to maintain social stability. The villagers need to be able to vote out officials they don't like so the central government doesn't have to investigate them on its own time. Besides, the village cadre (which is made up of members appointed by the CCP/CPC) is there to work with the elected committee to ensure party policy is enacted in the villages.

There's a bit of a debate among political scientists over what these elections mean for China. Some argue that they could lead to bottom-up democratization, while others argue that this kind of grassroots democracy will only be allowed to exist in areas with low state capacity. I don't have much of an opinion on it because I'm not an expert. However, it would be very cool if Xi Jinping would stop being a fucking loser and let factions exist in the party again. Who needs multi-party democracy when you can have a one-party state with opposing internal factions who advocate for different policy approaches? Smh!!!!!

Ok, the vote was out, it ended. i also tried to do this on Twitter and one person voted on here aswell. I tried mixing the designs but it was a little to much. i still did but i kept the two most Voted as the main Designs. The Mixed designs that won being A-2-3 & -4. I did track a little away from the concepts on the Vote but not by far. I also Added her floaty bits and lightened the red parts of her fur. and if anyone asks "Why would she change form A-24's designs to A-34?" I have An Idea That After Generations, Her scars Started Showing again And decided to cover up. During forces She lost autumn forest And After hearing rumors of Eggmans plans she went to find sonic and the others to warn them with some friends and tried going there, but she was cut off from the group by infinite. she picked an ok fight, but in the end slipped up and got hit int he eye. and was taken to one of the labs to either keep her from reaching the resistance, or to basically have a Surge before surge was created and gave Infinite the knowledge needed to know Sonics move set) (I made this Before I Imposter syndrome I swear...she was created back in 2017 and redesigned in 2020) (basically mf got echo'd) Seen as though Autumn forest was destroyed, she takes residence in Windmill Village and Runs a Cafe, After hearing Chao Garden Was destroyed aswell she Went straight to work helping the Chao have a Home and help in the Cafe. She has 3 Chao: Snipes, Moka, & Mitsuri. She also Adopted a ghost Chao named Kiki who somehow is able to follow her in her dreams. And she has a Jade wisp. she Calls Chrysi. Nix's Favorite food: Potato Mochi and Dango. height: 2-11-3'0 Speed: 8/10 Strength: 8/10 Stamina: 4/10 abilities: 9/10 Fun fact: Due to nix having to heal people, She had to get stronger, so now she can Carry people twice her size. For Example, every time Bark gets beaten up badly Or if mighty over works on his training. LAINEY WILSON - "HANG TIGHT HONEY"

Alfred Soto: For a while Lainey Wilson was a secret a couple of us critics passed around. Then she enjoyed a helluva 2022 and 2023. Blessed with a twang equal parts dulcet and tensile, she's terrific inhabiting ballads and excellent on hootchie-coos like "Hang Tight Honey," good enough as a song (check out the three-note guitar screech before the chorus) but as processed through Wilson's pipes a declaration of faith. [8]

TA Inskeep: The gasoline-revved single Miranda Lambert hasn't given us in years, this moves at a crazy (especially for mainstream country) clip. Jay Joyce's aggressive production gives this a thumping, propulsive, white-funky feel — akin to, I dunno, the James Gang's "Funk #49"? — while Wilson sells the hell out of it. Save the stupid line about her lover's "blue-collar kiss," this is great. [8]

Taylor Alatorre: A bit of lost songwriting wisdom from the pre-SoundScan era: if you rock out hard enough and unapologetically enough (and competently enough, though this is optional), you can make even a line like “blue-collar kiss” sound essential, like the song would suffer irreducibly if it were taken away. “Blue-collar kiss” doesn’t mean anything, just like a miniature “Highway Star” guitar solo doesn’t mean anything, just like shouting the song’s title in the middle of that guitar solo doesn’t mean anything. What it does do is further build up the sense that the singer, and by extension the listener, can get away with almost anything here — in this sonic universe, in this honky-tonk, or a well-crafted approximation thereof. What it does is make me type the words “lainey wilson tour” into Google as I’m writing this. [9]

Mark Sinker: Idly wondering “are road-songs still much of a thing (the way they used to be)?” when the middle eight kicks into full and quite surprising glam-stomp. Would the rest of the song be better if it fed more off this sound? Glimpses of the 70s can be nostalgic lovebombs, sure, but I don’t miss them. Because they sucked.  [5]

Ian Mathers: I'm going to remember my unaccountable animus towards this perfectly decent little song the next time I'm baffled that someone finds the markers of one of my preferred genres mysteriously enraging. But in the meantime, this is the best I can do for what might as well be nails on a chalkboard to me. [5]

Jonathan Bradley: Brick-walled bonhomie that's so weighed down by forced cheer that is has no chance at delivering the momentum it promises. [4]

Nortey Dowuona: Driver Williams can rip a good guitar solo, I guess? What does Jay Joyce have against drums?  [7]

Katherine St. Asaph: Southern comfort food served with oomph and familiarity. The sort of song where my musical gut refuses to agree with my rational mind that I haven't actually heard this at a dozen barbecues throughout my life. [7]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: I'm an absolute sucker for these kinds of country-rock road warrior songs — I stand by my prior remarks that Luke Combs' "Doin' This" is a [10] — but this is more fun than most takes on the style. It breaks from Skynyrd-esque power balladry to harken back to something older and weirder, drawing on the loose, frenetic energy of Stax party records. It's a triumphant record, the organ stabs and guitar riffs and even that incessant "ooh-ooh-ooh" hook coming together to sound like a coronation while never losing the joy of its groove.  [8]
