Made my mom happy, got her to play the original three sonic games via the DS collection cartridge. She was giddy to see Sonic and Knuckles. Annoyed as hell about the zones for the first game. But she played Sonic in collage and I wanted to help her see that part of her collage life again with a series I suck at for now.

Long Thread Shadow and Amy Rose. So with Sonic Movie 3 continuing the trend of Sega (or at the very less Sega of America) not giving a shit about Amy Rose, I’m gonna list all the shit she SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN, but was left out of
First off Every 90’s Dic Animated Cartoon (SatAM, AoStH and Underground), Amy around during each one of those productions yet she doesn’t show up, yet Tails and Knuckles both do, even tho A. She came out the same year as Tails and B. Showed up BEFORE Knuckles
Next would-be classic games collections minus Gems & Origins. Amy & her debut game Sonic CD for a long time was excluded from many of the Classic Collections, like Sonic Mega Collection, the DS collection & the Sonic's “Ultimate” Genesis Collection which had Archie & Spinball
Then we get to the modern era and oh boy this is fun. She’s in the 1st Sonic adventure as a playable character, all be it a Slow Character but still relevant, In SA2 she is not playable but has plot relevance, which I will get to later when talking about Movie 3
From there you have Heroes, Shadow, & 06. In Heroes she is a speed type like Sonic & Shadow, but can’t do ring dash or wall jumps & as many fans make clear she has the least popular group. Thank you, Shadow, for being So popular & taking Rouge from being apart of OG team Rose.
In Shadows game she is in 1 level & a cut scene at the end, even tho AMY was who got Shadow to be himself, Shadow Fans forget this. Tails & Knux who he has no history with get many. Heck Maria & Omega get more then Amy, despite being flat characters that exist to prop up Shadow
Next up 06, same before she in 1 level but gets 1 extra mission in the hub world. Whereas Shadow gets himself a whole campaign + vehicles, + his side characters get cooler gameplay than Amy. What does Amy get? Will she’s not long fast & for some reason can turn invisible. Clearly one of them got more attention during development. It also didn’t help Amy’s status as a love interest with Elise being there.
Now for the handheld games and it somehow gets worse for her. Dimps, the developers behind the Sonic Advance Trilogy + the Sonic rush Trilogy DID NOT LIKE AMY AT ALL! She gets to be the slow gimmick character in 1 & is not part of 2 but instead the hidden unlock you get the emeralds for.
In Rush, Dimps, makes Cream the Sidekick/Tails to Blaze even tho in the last game Amy & Cream where the female Sonic & Tails. They even write Amy as being abusive to Cream, A THING AMY WOULD NOT DO. Which is even dumber bc Marine shows up next game as the Tails to Blaze’s Sonic.
Now we have Sonic Battle, which does even less favors. Made by THQ (Not Sonic Team) you a cool Sonic fighting game, you let Amy form a Mother Child bond with a Robot, you give her some GODDAMN COOL ROCK LEE TRAINING WEIGHTS & Cream even says Amy is the strongest Women she knows.
But you have Amy starve herself for Sonic, not treat it seriously or for her friends to show concern. All her Attacks are Sonic driven, she thinks up a physical copy of Sonic to fight Rouge (which Fans use to say she is Crazy or Weaker than Rogue, both of them beat each up)
Finally in Handhelds is Sonic Rivals 1 &2 by Backbone Entertainment & Sega Studio USA. In 1 she is captured at the start ALONG WITH TAILS & saved at the end for Sonic to say he forgot about her & be creeped out by her. She’s not even in 2 so a good thing, can’t mess her up
We than get a period of time where Sonic games only have Sonic & Tails in them. So can’t mess her up like that (Unleashed is great for Her). In Sonic Forces while this point is minor, She along with Knuckles are leading the Resistance but Knux gets to be on the box & Amy doesn't
But I think the most damaging thing would be Sonic Mania. It makes itself out to be a celebration of all the things you loved about Classic Sonic from 1, 2, 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Knuckles Chaotix, Mean Bean Machine, Spinball and CD. But Amy somehow was not in any of it.
Hell I would say that Sonic Mania takes a good chunk from CD but no Amy. You get Amy Doll which explodes when it hugs you. (Get it the joke is that Amy is crazy & explosive and you don’t want her to hug you and should always run away from her ha ha so funny)
Fang Bean and Back get full sprites in Mania not Amy. Oh yeah and Mighty and Ray get to be playable but not Amy. There was even a hashtag for Amy to be added, only for Christin Whitehead or Sega to say - nah. (This is also why Origins and Superstars are better than Mania, Amy)
A pattern with all this is when people who aren’t Sonic Team write for Sonic, Amy usually gets the worst treatment (not to say she is the only 1, just the worst. Sonic X in Japanese is Great for Amy. But the English try & mess it up, but you still you get good stuff for her.
Not getting into Archie because if we are grading quality of how Amy is treated, that is dead last. PS Fleetway Amy Sweep and IDW Amy is Canon which I’m happy about.
This all to say and go back to my main point about Sonic Movie 3. I have like the Sonic movies so far, 2 was fantastic, but with the Knux show, the flaws showed to it & the movies. All of it is just marketing. The movie universe isn’t here to tell stories its here to sell stuff.
Wondering what I mean by this. So far the main Sonic character in the Sonic movie are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow and Eggman. 4 being mobians & 1 human. When looking at the merchandise for Sonic as a whole you see it plan as day it is always Sonic Tails knuckles & Shadow. (Only recently has Amy been include but she still gets left out from time to time.)
Amy is supposed to be the fourth member of team Sonic, NOT Shadow. He not only has his own team he doesn’t even like Sonic, Knuckles or Tails. Hell straight up has a vendetta against Tails. But marketing keeps pushing them together
That’s what Sonic Movie 3 is MARKETING, not a story, bc if it was Amy would be in it already. Bc we have Sonic, Eggman, Echidna Tribe, Tails, Knux, Chaos Emeralds, Pac, Shadow, Maria, Gerald, GUN & no Amy. & Shadow Fans will say it is perfectly fine he needs all that screen time
I want to like Shadow, but he just sucks up any light from others. Rogue on Team Rose, no Fans want Shadow alive again, Amy Rose game? No Shadow Game. Other playable characters, no only Shadow. More Sonic Characters in a Sonic Movie? No, only characters tied to Shadow. But yeah

Do you have a source on that claim that Colours was built off of a failed Wii port of Gens? It sounds really interesting and I’ve never heard it before
You sent a second message in saying you found my post about it, but I couldn't find it, so for the general record, what I know is that:
I remember while working at TSSZ we reported on a rumor for a game called "Sonic Gauntlet" that was Sonic revisiting old levels. This was like 2009.
Maybe a year later, Sony has a massive data breach and one of the pieces of information that leaked is that they were in talks with Sega for a special edition of something called "Sonic Anniversary." I believe Sony wanted every Sonic game up through Sonic Adventure included. We report that it's just another game collection, albeit a very big one.
Later that year, someone at Sega Spain leaks that "Sonic Anniversary" is a game about Sonic revisiting old levels. The leak says it's for Xbox 360, Wii, DS, and PSP. A Playstation 3 version is not mentioned.
I believe it's been said that Classic Sonic wasn't part of the game originally, so it seems like Sonic Anniversary got delayed internally to add Classic Sonic and retool itself into Sonic Generations.
That delay meant the Wii, DS and PSP versions of the game were canceled. PS3, 3DS and PC versions replace them. We have a prototype of "Sonic Anniversary" for the PSP, but the disc it is backed up to has been physically cracked. The few assets recovered from the disc match Sonic Generations for the 3DS (they're Mushroom Hill textures).
Whatever work was completed on Sonic Anniversary for the Wii and DS seemed to become Sonic Colors. Not only does the Wii version of Colors share badnik designs with Sonic Generations (one of the only games to share badnik designs cross-game like that), the DS version of Sonic Colors is more directly structured exactly like Sonic Generations, with Sonic "restoring" planets in order to rescue all of his friends; everyone that appears in Generations is present and accounted for in Colors DS.
So there's no real "source," like nothing official from Sega, just a very strong hunch and some deductive reasoning.
It raises a lot of questions for me, actually.
What was the original level lineup for Sonic Anniversary?
Was the PSP/3DS version originally closer to what the console lineup was like?
Did adding a Sonic Colors level force them to shift anything around?
Are any Sonic Colors levels analogous to levels planned for Generations/Anniversary? Like is Sweet Mountain somehow just a reskinned Chemical Plant or something?
Was "Sonic Gauntlet" actually a real codename at one point? I feel like my memory is hazy for that in particular.

love screaming about sonic!!
when i was a kid we moved a lot and didnt have cable but the one channel we got had sonic underground and I thought that was the coolest thing ever! me and my siblings made so many fan theories about how they would find their mother but were dismayed to discover it had been cancelled (this was like 2010, it had been dead in the water for a while)
sonic was in the background for a while but then i got into deep dive videos and video game history and started collecting nintendo ds/3ds games, systems, accessories, weird shit, ect!! my goal is to own every sonic game for the ds and 3ds (including sega titles that happen to have sonic on the cover)
i also have sonic generations for the xbox in my game collection which is weird bc i never had an xbox.
first sonic game i actually played was shadow the hedgehog! me and my brother had such a great time bc every time shadow slid off the road into the abyss he said ‘damn,, not here..”
i currently don’t have any 3ds sonic games but i have 7 ds titles, 3 switch titles, 2 wii titles, and the xbox game lmao
there are two(?) more ds games i dont have, sonic classics and sega classics
first thing i bought from hot topic was an eggman tshirt, got gifted several sonic shirts for holidays, spent my first paycheck on a handmade shadow the hedgehog doll, have several figurines, a rad hoodie that was less than 20 dollars and is super awesome, i diy’ed my own knuckles halloween costume and handsewed my own spiked gloves, i tried explaining archie lore to my grandparents but they did not understand
its really fascinating how sonic and the internet are so intertwined for the better and the worse
i filled two sketchbooks with sonic OCs and characters, also my friends as sonic characters, or any one who sat still long enough XD
SONIC UNDERGROUND???

Sonic 30th Anniversary Symphony (2021) - My reaction 3 years later
youtube
I am going to admit one thing. I am a Sonic fan, and it has always been this way since 2006 when I got my hands on Sonic Advance 3 for my Game Boy Advance SP. At the time I was one year away from starting elementary school and my family was not well off at the time, so I had to make do with what I could play. Little did I know that my first encounter with the blue hedgehog would change my life forever as I know it today.
Then as I grew older I was able to get some extra games for the systems I did own, such as my childhood 32 bit console, the Sega Saturn. I got Sonic Jam which was my first gateway drug to the classic 16-bit Sonic games, and I even got to roam around in the Sonic World for a bit, doing tasks like collecting rings and such. The Sonic series has its ups and downs, sure, but there is one thing that the Sonic series never fails on, and it became even more apparent when I saw this comment on one particular live-stream where a music teacher was gob-smacked by how fuckin' awesome the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack was!
Tumblr media
Anyway, this little long-winded intro out of the way, though it still rings true as the picture says. Let's get right into it. As a 30th anniversary birthday present to Sega's premier franchise Sonic the Hedgehog in 2021, Sega decided "Why not make it bigger and better?" They got some Czech Republic philharmonic orchestra to do the orchestrated medleys for many a Sonic game under the sun, all of which remain one of my favorites. Keep in mind, this Symphony came out before Sonic Frontiers and Superstars. Also, I am not the best in terms of being a music critic unlike the Anthony Fantano types so my reviews of them are going to be relatively brief.
Part 1: Countdown
The music playing during the first 15 minutes of countdown is nothing short of spectacular. The track list is as follows:
A New Journey - Sonic Unleashed
Comfort Zone (Main Menu) - Sonic Mania/Plus
It Doesn't Matter (Instrumental) - Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Goes U.G. Mix - Sonic Gems Collection
Fist Bump (Piano Version - Theater Room) - Sonic Forces
Mission (theme of Sonic 3D Blast) - Sonic Generations
Tropical Resort (Area Theme) - Sonic Colours
Part 2: The Orchestra
The Philarmonic Orchestra masterfully conducted a beautiful rearrangement of almost every Sonic game's soundtrack out there. I say "almost every" because for the Orchestra portion it's missing Sonic CD, the GBA and DS Sonic games and Sonic Boom. But that's minor substitutions in favor of something a lot grander, and I appreciate it. I mean, they even represented games like Sonic Drift 2 and Tails Adventures! Even NiGHTS got a shoutout. How about that for cool?
Part 3: Tomoya Ohtani
Tomoya Ohtani Band. Oh man, what can I say? Well, they played three songs, so let's get right to it.
Reach for the Stars (Re-Colors)
The Re-Colors version of Reach for the Stars as found in Sonic Colours Ultimate, the remaster of the Nintendo Wii game now available on PS4/5, XBOX, Switch and PC. This song absolutely rocked the socks off when I first played the original game on the Wii, and this arrangement is even better still.
Speak with Your Heart (Original + Rainbow Mix)
Things go normal for the first few minutes of this song, which I like, and then Tomoya Ohtani drops a bombshell when it turns into the "Rainbow Mix" which has a trap beat type vibe to it. I love it!
Endless Possibility from Sonic Unleashed (vocals: Nathan Sharp)
Nathan Sharp is the guy who sings covers of Sonic songs under the best name you could ever give, "NateWantsToBattle" under his record label "Give Heart Records". Endless Possibility is a song that people have loved for years and years and years. It's a song which was originally performed by the same people that did the vocal intro for Phineas and Ferb. Nathan Sharp swoops in and delivers the BEST version of the song yet!
Part 4: Crush 40 (Jun Senoue & Johnny Gioeli)
Crush 40 is also a staple among Sonic fans. From hit songs like Open Your Heart, Live and Learn, Sonic Heroes, I Am... All of Me, and so on, their music has touched lives everywhere around the world. Fun fact, they used to be known as Sons of Angels for a short period of time, where some of their Sons of Angels-era songs were used in the Sega arcade game NASCAR Arcade. The songs in NASCAR Arcade would be released in the only music album to bear the Sons of Angels artist name, "Thrill of the Feel". Speaking of which, they sang six songs before adding two more after fans (this was in 2021 and we were still in lockdown so....) "demanded" more from them. Fun fact: Jun Senoue also did some songs for the Game no Kanzume "Sega Games Can" discs for the Sega Mega CD. Johnny Gioeli also provided vocals for another band under his wing called Hardline. The six initial songs are as follows, which all really will rock your sound system off.
Open Your Heart (Sonic Adventure)
Sonic Heroes
Green Light Ride (Team Sonic Racing)
Sonic Boom (Sonic CD USA edition) (Crush 40 VS Cash Cash version)
I Am... All of Me (Shadow the Hedgehog)
Knight of the Wind (Sonic and the Black Knight)
Part 5: The Grand Finale Songs
Whooo~!!! Here comes the big ones. Two legendary songs all from one game. All before ending it off with an orchestrated mix of "Friends" by Hyper Potions.
These two songs are all from one of the best Sonic games of all time, Sonic Adventure 2.
Escape from the City (vocals: Nathan Sharp)
No one in their right mind would want to tell you that this song from after Sonic jumps off the helicopter in a bid to escape GUN forces is not legendary.
Yet here is Escape from the City, one of the BEST Sonic songs. And, of course, another spotlight by the King of Sonic song covers, Nathan Sharp. The Philarmonic Orchestra also added to the grand vibe of the song by making it even better still.
Live and Learn
There's nothing I can say. One of the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) Sonic songs just got a whole lot better.

May I just say that I'm really impressed with the Nintendo Switch, especially after the direct.
Most Nintendo consoles after their halfway point really slow down and pretty much suffer a slow death, they don't get any big games and Nintendo fans just wait in agony for the next Nintendo console.
The Wii barely got anything in its later years aside from Kirby's Return to Dreamland and like... Mario and Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (which is actually a pretty fun minigame collection I recommend it.)
The Wii U..... HAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! I mean there was Breath of the Wild but like... who played it on Wii U? Be honest with me here guys. Don't lie.
The Gamecube... nothing. N64... uh... Dr. Mario?
But with the Switch, we're getting a brand new Mario and Luigi title, a new Mario Party with over 110 minigames and a 20 player online mode, a brand new top-down Zelda game with Zelda as the main character, and Metroid Prime 4!!! LIKE... WHAT?!?!
If the Switch can somehow outsell the DS, then I wouldn't be that shocked. Nintendo, despite having one of the most EVIL legal teams in gaming and being an awful fucking company, they still manage to get exclusives and exciting titles out on a consistent basis. Sure there are some sour spots like the Mario sports games and... Nintendo Switch Sports.. ugh. And sure there are lots of overpriced remasters ill give you that but, the quality and consistency of these titles is something that Sony and Microsoft can't even come close to.
I'm not trying to jerk off Nintendo and turn this into a console war thing but, Sony have really dropped the ball on their management and it has gone to shit. Only pumping out hyper realistic giant 30+ hour games that take so much time and money to make. While I do like most of them, I want there to be more variety and more titles. There's a reason why "PS5 has no games" is a meme. And the pc ports of PS5 games after a couple of years of their release are getting really annoying. Once Spider-Man 2 gets on the PC, I won't ever touch my PS5 ever again aside from Astro Bot coming later this year. Im not saying that these games shouldn't be on pc, I'm saying that it's kinda damaging the dedicated fan base of Sony players and they're gonna start moving over to the PC and not want to use their PS5 anymore. The PS5 will not have a legacy like its older brothers. As a person who grew up with a PS2 and PS3, I'm really disappointed with Sony at the moment.
And Microsoft? Well... we'll have to wait and see the quality of those games they announced recently. But you know what? They did have a good showcase, I will admit.
I'm starting to really come around on the Switch and there are SO MANY games to get for it. There's at least one title for everyone and I think that's really cool. It also has so many indie games and retro collections on it too. The Switch has a giant library of old classics from many generations as well as exciting new games that bring new concepts to the table.
If the Switch 2 can continue that momentum while increasing the fidelity to allow for more games to reach 60fps and higher resolutions... then we're in for something really special.

Shining Force CD (MD Mini 2)
Tumblr media
Due to the way SEGA seems to approach reissuing its classic catalog, we tend to get a patchwork view of many of its classic franchises as time goes on. If it's on the Mega Drive/Genesis, you'll probably see it often. If it's Sonic, it will probably turn up sooner or later. Game Gear or Dreamcast... well, there's a shot. Master System, Saturn, 32X, or SEGA-CD? Good luck. There were some Master System releases on the Virtual Console and a couple in the Switch SEGA AGES line, plus an assortment in some of the Yakuza/Judgment games. This mini-console resulted in some much-needed SEGA-CD reissues. But this kind of thing is scarce in more ways than one.
In the case of the Shining Force series, the two Mega Drive games are by far the most commonly seen. The sole Game Gear release to get localized made it to the Nintendo 3DS globally, but the other two titles on SEGA's handheld were limited to Japan. Then you've got the third mainline chapter, broken up into three games, stuck on the Saturn. And only one of those ever had an official localization, to boot. Then there's this SEGA-CD release, which remakes the first two Game Gear games and adds some original content to tie things up. Oh, and a Nintendo DS game that was also unlocalized. That one doesn't come up much.
Anyway, Shining Force CD. This is a curious case, because not only is it a remake of a pair of 8-bit handheld games for relatively powerful CD-based 16-bit hardware, it's also a remake that chased the initial releases fairly closely. In terms of presentation, the remade games look as good as Shining Force II and sound great. The gameplay remains more or less as it was in the Game Gear games. That means you go from one battle to the next, with the odd cutscene in the middle, Fire Emblem style. The RPG-like exploration wasn't in the handheld games, and it therefore isn't incorporated here either. Some Shining Force fans rate it low as a result, and I suppose I can understand that. It's designed for handheld play, after all.
Still, I think this is pretty cool. The fact that some handheld games got this royal treatment in that time and place is amazing, and I think the added content really ups the ante. It's certainly worth a full playthrough if you enjoy the Shining Force games or the genre as a whole. I wish this game would get reissued more often, but I can say that about a lot of SEGA games. Imagine a Shining Collection? That would be neat. Dreaming little dreams over here. In conclusion, Shining Force CD is another great game for the Mega Drive Mini 2.

Sonic Lost World
Original Platform: Wii U
Version played: Wii U & PC
Original release: 29th October 2013
Available to buy: Yes
Tumblr media
Originally released on Wii U then ported to PC, this Sonic game has its own unique mechanics and style, ditching the “boost style” games. It didn’t perform well and future games went back to the boost formula, but I really do love Sonic Lost World.
Sonic Lost World has a “parkour” system, which means running up and along walls. It can be a bit fiddly at times, but movement as a whole is very smooth and enjoyable. Out of all the 3D Sonic games (excluding the 2D classic levels from Sonic Generations), Lost World feels the most like the classic Mega Drive games, and even uses elements in ways that don’t feel forced – there are a lot of classic enemies that are implemented well into the game, rather than re-using level themes. Lost World isn’t afraid of having some slower paced platforming levels, which I’ve always felt are an important part of Sonic games.
The visual style is very nice, too, with levels that still look gorgeous, helped by some really nice backgrounds. Sonic animations are also adorable, including the running animation, which I think is the best out of the 3D games. I also even like the basic story this game has. It doesn’t try anything emotional, but sometimes a simple story is all you need.
The game does have some issues. Similar to Sonic Unleashed, the game doesn’t want you to progress too quickly. New areas are gates by how many animals you have collected, and you’ll have to replay previous levels to collect more, it really slows down the game in an unnecessary way. The game also has wisps which feel like an unnecessary addition, although unlike the DS version, the wisps are more for alternate routes and don’t have entire levels focused on using them.
I think Sonic Lost World is a great game, and it’s a shame we never got to see this formula evolve at all.

Thinking about the different versions of the original Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis game, I have:
Genesis cartridge
First Steam release (the now-delisted ROM they sold)
Sonic Origins
The port included with Generations (PS3 and Steam)
Genesis Collection on PSP
Classics Collection on DS
3DS port
iOS (but my old iPhone forgot I paid for it [Apple sucks])
If you want to include the Game Gear variant I have that on cartridge alongside the versions put onto Origins Plus and SADX.
Include ports for different OS/consoles, anniversary editions or similar if it's still essentially the same game, etc.
We ask your questions so you don’t have to! Submit your questions to have them posted anonymously as polls.

So... I beat Sonic Forces having borrowed the cartridge from my sis.... it only took 4 hours according to my switch... why I share this? THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST SEGA GAME I EVER BEATEN!
I OWN SONIC COLLECTION DS, SONIC COLORS WII, AND NIGHTS JOURNEY OF DREAMS (personally my favorite and biggest pain) AND ON A BORROWED CARTRIDGE I BEAT AND CHEESED SONIC FORCES BECAUSE THE INVINCIBILITY MECHANIC OF THE RABBIT APPARENTLY APPLIED TO THE ZAP WHICH I DISCOVERED MIDFIGHT IN THE METROPOLIS BATTLE WITH INFINITE!
I AM PISSED! THIS WAS ALSO WHERE I LEARNED HOW SONIC CLASSIC (WHICH IS THE ONE YOU PLAY AS ON DS) FREAKING WORKS IN LEVELS AND MECAHNICS!
I HAD ACCESS TO SEGA GAMES SINCE I WAS 8! 8!
