If you haven’t listened to AViVA, do so immediately. The way she plays with trap, electronic, and dark music is truly amazing. Perhaps my favorite thing about her music is her use of silence as percussion. If that doesn’t make sense, listen to this track. It’s awesome. 

Genre: Things are getting desperate for our protagonist. Maybe they’re faced with a suicide mission and impossible odds. Maybe they’re having a panic attack. Maybe they’re saving a friend. Whatever the situation is, it’s dire.

If you’ve been looking for a chill yet upbeat, positive yet minor, the-first-time-your-ship-really-falls-in-love kind of song THIS IS THE ONE FOR YOU. 

According to Genius lyrics, the line is “Tell me I’ve been all you’ve thought of” but to ME it sounds like “Tell me every lie you’ve thought of” which I think fits the mood of the song better.

It’s got a haunting piano melody, wispy female vocals, and a lovely slowburn intro. Check it out if you want! The Tech Thieves are awesome, be sure to give them a listen!

Tortuga, by DoubleV. 

Lyricless trap with a catchy whistling melody. Also minor, so that’s really fun. This is a great song to listen to that helps get you in the Zone, whether it’s writing, arting, driving, working, whatever. It’s a good one. 

Genre: That pirate shanty somewhere in the Carribbean, only they’ve updated their music so it’s more like...a pirate electroclub. You order some rum and wink at the ladies before settling old scores with joyful bloody fists.

Hands Dirty, by Delta Rae

You ever hear a song and instantly you snap to attention, your head starts bobbing along, your breathing matches the rhythm, your soul is ready to FIGHT, you realize you haven’t lived until now. 

That’s this song. 

In an interview, Delta Rae’s Brittany Holljes says  "We didn’t want this to just talk about how women are victims. Rather, we wanted to talk about how women are going out there and kicking ass."

I love that!

This is a fun, happy beat song with a hilarious story. It’s by Jon Bellion, artist of All Time Low. Honestly, I like this one better although it’s much less well known. It has kind of a “we’re just cutting up in the studio” vibe to it.

“Call my doctor, call my lawyer, call my brother, call my priest...”

If you turn it up, you can hear people in the background and they’re hilarious. One guy shouts “CALL MY PRIEST” right after Jon sings that lyric.

I know, I know. This one isn’t really obscure. But OH MY. I’m in love with this song. 

Genre: You’re depressed as you stare at your dingy inner-city apartment. Then that person that makes your heart flutter shows up with some buckets of old paint they found in a warehouse at the hardware store where they work; it’s just the rejects, they’re all different colors but will they work? Yes, you smile a little bit. Yes, they’ll work. This song plays as the two of you break out the paint rollers and start slapping paint on the walls; pretty soon it’s an all out paint war. It ends with you smiling sheepishly at each other, this song fading away into the background.

Minor, chill, steady beat. 

Genre: The hero is devolving into darkness. This is it; the pivotal moment. The hero strengthens their resolves and decides to stop waiting around for the villain to attack their true love, instead taking matters into their own hands as they leave the diner and head into the night, searching for the villain. It’s probably not the best move, but it’s definitely the gutsy one. This song plays as they step into the darkness, going on the offensive.

Darkling, by Die Antwoord

A South African duo group. This song is dark and chilling, ethereal, sort of wandering. 

Genre: Staring contemplatively out the window as rain trickles down the pane, questioning existence and personal worth somewhat dramatically. Watching the world pass by, feeling sad. 

Warning: Don’t listen to this one if you already feel sad! It’s a pretty sad song, best listened to when you’re not already depressed. You have been warned!

This is one of my top favorite songs. Ever. It has an amazing Native American vibe, heavy base, an amazing rap bit, and the lyrics are awesome. It’s definitely a Drive Fast with the Top-Down song. 

Favorite line: “The currency is murder, you a man of worth.”

Like take a few minutes to really process that. 

Great, right?

This song is awesome. It’s heavy but not overpowering, it’s got a good guitar riff, fun vocals...

And when it gets to that vocalizing part and then “Stop nananaOOOOOOH!!!” I just lose it!
