so i just started watching kdramas and my first one was the glory because it's a lot to my taste (song hye kyo yum +revenge + plotting) and i'd love if you could give me similar recs? i also liked reborn rich but it's put off until i finish the webtoon!

I am afraid I can't be super helpful because modern revenge tales with low romance aren't super my thing - I didn't finish Reborn Rich and never even checked out The Glory. But I do have some recs.

The ones that come to mind are:

Mawang/The Devil/Lucifer (2007) - this one is a masterpiece. A series of seemingly random killings bring together a hot headed cop, an icy lawyer and a librarian who has the power of seeing the past of an object she touches. This is not a serial killer drama (or a procedural) - it's an intricate, impeccably written, tragic tale of past and long-plotted revenge. It's in my Top 5 dramas.

Resurrection - This one is def old (2005) but a really good tale of revenge and family secrets.

Again My Life (2022) - it's sort of an off-brand Reborn Rich where our protag, a prosecutor played by Lee Jun Ki, is killed but wakes up in his law school days and tries to find out what happened to him. Just as with RR, it wasn't able to hold my attention so I peaced out but it's certainly rather similar in set up.

This is not filet mignon but rather addictive fast food, but if what you have a hankering for ladies seeking and getting revenge on those who wronged them, Marry My Husband (2024) and Perfect Marriage Revenge (2023) are delightful fun about women who have been wronged by their spouses and families but get a second chance after death to return back to X time before their death and put their life on track/get revenge.

Nice Guy/Innocent Man (2012) is an older drama that I am quite fond of, though it is rather romance heavy. Our ML (played by Song Joong Ki of RR) ends up being used and betrayed by his evil gf who wrecks his life and then marries some rich dude. After he comes out of jail, he seeks revenge on her and involves her prickly same-age stepdaughter in it etc etc. It's great and a fave and written by the amazing Lee Kyung Hee, one of my fave screenwriters, but once again, it is more about dysfunctional people than revenge per se.

I am gonna throw this open to my followers and see if anyone has any more recs!

ETA: there are way more recs in comments including mine because I apparently can remember things only after I click post (not sure why I called you Anon tho sorry, I think it’s because I used to have Anon asks on and mostly got those.)

The way I’m gonna have to see people saying Dongeun x Yeojeong aren’t a good ship because they either:

1.) Ship her with Doyoung instead.

2.) Are projecting their own feelings of wanting to fuck Doyoung on to Dongeun.

3.) Find the age gap between Dongeun, Yeojeong, and the actors “diSGUsTSiNG 🤢” , even though it’s nothing illegal (Song Hye-kyo is 41, Dongeun is in her 30’s, Lee Dohyun is 27, Yeojeong is in his late 20’s or early 30’s). Let’s be real, if it was HIM that was older than HER, most of these haters would be eating it up and calling him a DILF, but ya know ageism against women strikes again🙄

4.) Or because they’ve never seen a ship where one character barely shows emotion and is so traumatized that they struggle to love someone back, so that makes them think they have no chemistry.

Dongeun x Yeojeong haters are always like “Oh but he’s so 😁😊🥰 and she’s so 😐😑🙂, how can y’all ship them?!” Umm… Sorry that not everybody is a “Omg I love you so much and I’ll tell you that all the time! I’m gonna hug you, smile and hold your hand every second we are together, and give you gifts every day!” type of person when they are in a relationship???

I'm still on the Lee Do Hyun obsession train and i just finished The Glory. And oooof, What. A. Ride.

I think i have a thing for watching good people do bad things. And i love sweet puppy faces indulging in absolutely unhinged sociopathic behaviour (looking at you Yeo jeong).

This show had such a crisp and gripping storyline, there were very few dull moments. The nonlinear storytelling really worked in its favour, snippets of the past revealed at perfect moments. Even though it's a dark, disturbing revenge drama, there were SO MANY character dynamics that had my heart:

1. The OTP of course, Dong eun and yeo Jeong. They were what looks like the grim reaper x golden retriever trope on the surface but both hurting victims of violence underneath. It is slowly revealed why they're fated to be in each other's orbit, but even in the process of the unraveling, it is believable. I love them together, i love how silently unhinged they are, i love how they love each other and i love how they get to end up together, happy in each other's company, able to confess their feelings.

2. Imo-nim and Dong eun: their relationship made me cry. They both made each other so happy and although it was meant to be just a professional relationship, it was truly so much more. It was a kind of sisterhood that dong eun had never had in life, perpetually betrayed. It made me so happy that her daughter got out and i hope that someday she gets to go the US and be with her daughter and have the lovely dinner she always dreamt of.

3. Do yeong and Dong eun: ooooof, these two. SO. MUCH. CHEMISTRY. simply over a game of Baduk?? These two were impossible. Yeo jeong was right to be jealous/insecure coz the daddy energy in this dude was off the charts. I think dong eun unlocked something in do yeong that he didn't know existed and once he acknowledged it he found his lie of a happy life disintegrate like a house of cards. Doesn't help that he was married to an actual psychopath, evil incarnate, pathological liar who would leave no stone unturned to protect her ass.

4. And finally do yeong and ye sol: the best dad-daughter relationship ever. The little girl was too cute and i was surprised she wasn't insufferable thanks to her mom. She had more of a moral compass/spine than the entire group of bullies and their families put together. Glad to see her to fly out of the dumpster fire, hand in hand with her appa, shining that bedazzling smile. 💃

What a great show, overall. The villains were truly hate-worthy and it made my heart full to see their ends. Each one of them was insufferable, and glad they got what they deserved. The good people gave you hope in this otherwise dreary plot and they got happy endings! So much yes for that! This show is a win for everyone involved and especially for Song Hye kyo who had not really impressed me with her acting until now. She did a fantastic job as dong eun and i hope she continues to do challenging roles in the future!

our beautiful beautiful man song joong ki as armyman yoo shi jin and the fl song hye kyo as the doctor kang mo yeon. second lead couple, as usual, more widely shipped as always, seo dae young and yoon myeong joo.

admittedly, i was looking forward to military man x doctor trope vv much but i was not too happy with how they pulled off the main couple.

i. im sorry, but i was so used to ship vincenzo and hong cha young from vincenzo that my brain could physically not compute song joong ki with another woman. i know they were married BUT.

ii. the fl. my dear lord. so annoying. AT FIRST, i really understood where she was coming from. i truly truly understood her moral dilemma. but oh dear god is there not a limit to writers just having the fl find reasons to reject shi jin just for the sake of plot twists?

iii. BUT i really liked how they explored that dilemma about her protecting people by saving lives and him protecting people by taking lives. it honestly got repetitive tho, so that made me lose interest as well.

iv. one thing i gotta admire — the amount of depth they gave each character. every side doctor who came with the relief team had so much of a story, and it was made in a way that was not intrusive to the lead couple or even the second lead couple.

v. and ugh, of course, the badass females. i mean, the military doctor? she was peak badass. it did annoy me in that scene where the guys were sent a package by some girls and the two doctors went ballistic over that. but when they fought over that idiot college guy or whoever — idk, it irked me but all the well, we always love jealous protags.

vi. of course, a separate point for song joong ki. that man is a work of art. i used to think he’s got such a baby face when i started vincenzo, but by the last ep of vincenzo, i. . .really stopped thinking otherwise. but his performance was, as always, amazing, and i havent seen reborn rich yet but im excited. + the epic bromance, in competition with the goblin and the grim reaper.

in short, if you like hard to get girl tropes, some action mixed with drama, a LOT of second hand embarrassment, then please check out descendants of the sun.

(he’s curious okay just let him be!) 〃‿〃 yang jungwon  양정원 !! - an interaction with ho-yeon jung ! - that fact that you’re always assigned to model for products and all is no surprise. even those who aren’t in your group’s fandom adore your visuals, after all. jungwon knew that you’d be busy for the whole day so he just invited his members to eat in a restaurant with him. little did wonie know, the restaurant he chose was also where you’ll be meeting with the actress for a collaboration. he was wondering why there were too many cameras in the place and immediately freaks out when he finally noticed you and the actress sitting a few tables across to theirs. the other members almost spat their drink out but they all tried to keep their cool afterwards. they’d also point out the fact that she and niki do look alike too.  (ꈍᴗꈍ) kim sunoo  김선우 !! - an interaction with han so-hee ! - when ddeonu noticed the actress sitting infront of him, he was already close to losing it. he wanted to interact with her so badly too. though, when your group got mentioned as the winner of the main award, sunoo’s attention focused on you again. he noticed how the actress seemed really happy for your group too but he didn’t think much of it at first. that was until you were going back to your seat and the actress suddenly pulls you in for a hug as she congratulates you. idols and fans didn’t even know about your friendship with her but it was still sunoo who was most surprised about it. after the show, he would ask you tons of questions + asks if you can get her autograph for him! (｡ᐤヮᐤ｡) nishimura riki  西村 力 !! - an interaction with gong yoo ! - niki here loves and enjoys watching your vlogs. he does it whenever he has the time to do it. you were assigned to be one of the cast in a new series and your manager also asked you to film a vlog on your first day. you posted the vlog as soon as the editing was done and informed niki about it. smiles a lot while watching it and then spits his water out by accident when he saw the actor talking to you in a casual way. literally stops the video just to call you and talk to you about it. you told him about how you’ve been friends even before you two were assigned to be in the same series and this made niki become excited + freak out even more. (*ﾟ▽ﾟ*)

Have you enjoyed any of Song Hye Kyos works? I kinda think she can't act for life😭 she's gorgeous but that's kind of all she got going for her. I tried watching almost all her dramas but she's so hard to watch, dunno if it's her characters or her acting or both that are so bland. I'm willing to give her a final chance with The Glory (since based on the synopsis her role here seems more of a challenging one acting-wise) but I'm honestly very X Doubt about it

imma be honest with you...i started dots and encounter and both were terrible so that's about all i've seen of her, i don't actually have an opinion on her acting. out of the cast for the glory i was not actually excited for her lmaoo

but it's the way actors that have acted in kes dramas before have the tendency to be called back to play in other dramas she does is insane?? is she bribing them?? what goes on

Uhm...can you ship real people? I think shipping is more character-oriented for me, I don’t ship actual celebrities together although I can see the appeal in it. I think the closest I come to shipping real people together is commenting that they look nice together or have good chemistry. 

In my opinion, the two of them clearly seem to have great chemistry and I’ll be happy for them if they decide to date each other but I am not obsessed with them - more the characters they played. If they do get together, it’ll probably appease the part of me that ships Lee Gon x Jeong Tae-Eul. Kind of like Song Joong-Ki and Song Hye-Kyo getting together after DOTS made me obsess over DOTS again haha.

September Wrap Up

Wow, guys. It’s September. And that means the Fall comeback rush! We hope all your favorite groups are making comebacks soon, and if not, keep hope because there are still a few months left in 2019! 

We’ve been going strong, getting things ready for my next announcement-- WE ARE STARTING A PODCAST! The first episode will be up on October 6 with a second episode following shortly (release dates for subsequent episodes will be announced soon). The three of us have been talking about this since at least March, and we are happy to report that we are getting closer to the release! 

Our aim is to release two episodes a month, the first episode will follow a looser format where we talk about a lighthearted topic, while the second episode will be more informative. In this first episode we will talk about the different ways the three of us got into KPOP! We will be on SoundCloud and eventually Spotify and iTunes. More information and links will be posted soon!

In lesser but still exciting news, we now have a Spotify! We will be putting up personally curated playlists on there so please check it out and follow us there as well!

EunBi and RiSe debuted in Ladies’ Code as a part of the original five-member lineup in 2013. EunBi was known for her sweet personality and sense of humor. RiSe was a humble beauty queen with a heart of gold. Together, these two were known for their close friendship. After EunBi and RiSe’s passing, the fans and remaining members of the group examined Ladies’ Code’s discography under a different lens, and the remaining members came to earn quite a bit of respect for how they handled their loss. EunBi and RiSe are greatly missed by fans who still celebrate their birthdays every year.

perhaps, i’m not a true fanatic of actors but rather a fan of the character they portray as well as the storyline. here are my top picks romance-comedy, life, family kdrama and jdrama out of *** series i’ve watched so far 😋 so I guess OST has it that makes it memorable. 😚1. Reply 1988 - this is about the daily life of 5 families in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul in 1988. nothing eventful scenes like sick and dying characters nor betrayal, the series is surprisingly amusing because of the nostalgic feeling it brings with every character becoming interesting. The friendship in the neighborhood as well as the love stories are just entertaining. Lesson: Every present moment becomes past memory so cherish it. In particular, i love Seong Deok Seon x Choi Taek. [Picked OST: Hyewadong and Don’t Worry]; 2. Misaeng - No love story, just a great portryal of the reality of employees in the office. I love Jang Geu Rae’s character here as a former baduk player who landed a job in a trading company. Only people in the corporate will surely understand. Lesson: I remember my MBA professor who said: As long as you have skills, no matter what happens, you will always pick up and never lose. (Picked OST: Fly]; 3. Itaewon Class - Nope, not a fanatic of PSJ but yes his character as Park Saeroyi is just inspiring. Lesson: Each of us is motivated by a dream and it’s not an easy path; pain and hardship while inevitable, is just passing. [Picked OST: Good morning, Son]. 4. Strong Girl Bong Soon - Light but not that light because this is partly thriller, the cute chemistry between Park Hyung Sik and Park Bo Yong will make you heart “kilig.” 😋 [Picked OST: Heartbeat] 5. Itazura na Kiss - the only Jdrama that left something in me. If you know the anime, this was Japan’s 2nd manga adaptation. Irie-Kun and Kotoko-chan will just make you laugh. [Picked OST: Kiss, Kiss, Kiss. 6. Full House - great combination of drama + comedy brought by Rain and Song Hye kyo, this classic is something to be remembered.[Picked OST: I Think I] P.S. 1. What kind of food can’t you stand?: Pineapple in savory foods. Pineapple in pizza!? Sacrilege!

2. If you could choose one minor inconvenience to never have to deal with again, what would you pick?: Sleeping. I think sleeping is a waste of time but something we need because damn our fragile human bodies needs sleep.

3. Have you got any useless talents?: KNOWING EVERYTHING ABOUT VOLTAGE INC. Well almost everything....which is pretty useless orz

4. If you could be really really good at one thing, what would it be?: Drawing. I enjoyed drawing once but I had a traumatic experience that sort of killed my mojo.

I regretted letting of my boyfriend of 9 years because of many circumstances. But life goes on, and I don’t regret it anymore. I am happy with my life now but sometimes i wonder what my life would have been if I had not given up on that relationship.

12. Name your most irrational fear/aversion: hm... bugs? but listen, its ridiculous! Once a cockroach was crawling in my apt when i was living by myself and I called my parents long distance because fuk I DIDN”T KNOW WHAT TO DO AHHHHH!!!! 14. If you drink, what kind of drunk are you? Alternatively, what sort of person are you at parties?: I am proud to say that I can hold my liquor. My husband told me I am an expensive date. I am an introvert but I become super extrovert when I drink and I like talking a lot. Also singing, drink + karaoke is the best combo. Expect some Madonna and Spice Girls from me lol.

Or does it usually take a long time for you to trust someone?: I am such a virtual whore omg I will fall for anyone in otome, BRING IT ON. but yeah, IRL, It takes me a looooong time to trust someone. I am an observer and indirectly take my time to get to know people. 

16. Would you rather have one close friend or 100 casual friends?: One close friend. 10 close friends are better XD.

Would you rather have a really godawful ugly tattoo in a place that is only slightly inconvenient to conceal with clothing (upper arm, thigh, etc.), or the coolest, most beautiful tattoo ever in the middle of your face? Look I have a tattoo and its damn hot and it took a long time to design and i thought hard where i wanted. Nope, i cannot answer this question. 

48. Are you more of an optimist or a pessimist?: Optimist. 

49. What would be the most flattering compliment someone could give you?: I don’t react well with compliments, so i don’t know.

50. Something you feel people often misunderstand about you: Just recently at work I got criticism for being too direct. If you don't know, in the Pacific NW, people like to beat around the bush and play passive aggressive, which is really not my style. So yeah, there. Just trying to keep things real lol.
