Let me start with one good thing from this week: I had my first driving lesson in several months, and my driving instructor told me he thinks I am ready to take my exam in May!! That was so unexpected, and made me so happy. Being able to drive would make some things so much easier. So yay 🥳🥳🥳

I'm not really the kind of person to have favourite songs. I am more of a listen to one artist or one album on repeat kind of gal, but I'll use this opportunity to gush about Sondre Justad and his latest album "En anna mæ" (2022), that I've been listening to a lot lately. Because I love the sound of it, and these are some of the most honest and brave lyrics I ever read. This is his third album, and he has been known in Norway for years. Before releasing this album he came out as bisexual, and talked about how he felt he had needed to hide this part of himself for years, and how that had a negative impact on him and his relationships. And he poured a lot of those feelings and thoughts into this album.

So I am going to share some lyrics from the song "Sorry", because I think he says it so well here:

Okay this has a multifaceted answer so I'm just gonna recount my experience on this journey. When you start teaching yourself Norwegian, most of the resources are only going to focus on the Oslo dialect so naturally that one is the easiest to teach yourself. I waited until I had a good basic understanding of grammar rules to dive into dialects and my first exposure to something other than Østlandsk was Eva from Skam and the singer Gabrielle who both speak Bergensk. Currently Bergensk is the second best when it comes to finding resources for it. There's also the comedian Ole Fotland who I follow. I don't even know what dialect he speaks because he uses features of Vestlandske dialekter but listening to his sets has been challenging!

After that I started learning more about Nynorsk because as it turns out, all the Norwegians I know don't actually even text with Bokmål. Since Nynorsk is pretty phonetically similar to spoken Norwegian, it's much easier to identify the variations in dialects. And once you can recognize what's different about each dialect, it becomes much easier to follow along. So when I started to listen to Northern Norwegian singers like Kristian Kristensen and Sondre Justad who both sing in Nordlandsk/Tromsk, their dialects were fairly easy to learn. The shift from "Jeg" to "Æ" is much easier to pick up on than having to learn "Eg" instead of "Jeg." However, as you travel to central Norway, Trøndersk gets significantly more difficult when it comes to differentiating sounds. Every vowel sound essentially shifts upward, voices get goofier higher, and everything just starts to sound like "Æ e i a æ å."

Jumping right down to Southern Norway, I have a friend from Stavanger and she might as well be speaking another language. First time I heard her talk on the phone to her friends, I couldn't catch a single word. She introduced me to the band Mods, also from Stavanger and for the first 2ish years of knowing each other, I fully thought they were both speaking Bergensk 🤦🏽‍♀️There's also the Tik-Toker named Anna Maria Ricke who's from Kristiansand. She's a little easier to understand once you get used to the fact that they swallow every single word.

So, final answer: I always thought the difficult dialects were in the North but Bergensk isn't even Northern, it's Vestnorsk. Every time I heard a vastly different dialect, I assumed it was Northern but it was always Vestnorsk. Those dialects have the most variation across cities. So you end up having to learn a whole new set of sounds each time but once you know what to look out for it gets a little easier. To my ears, Nordnorsk tends to be easiest due to it's phonetic structures. The south western dialects are harder in the sense that everything gets all mushed together (it's reminiscent of Danish). Finally, based on the one video I saw on Trøndersk, that might be the ugliest and most agonizing one to learn (said with love).

This week I saw a post from @northernmoments, about some Norwegian musics they have been sharing lately. Coincidentally, I was already doing a Norwegian music playlist myself, all because of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and it’s incredible story. Since I’m so into this game lately, I decided to search for Norwegian pop artists that sings in Norwegian and I wasn’t disappointed of what I found. There’s lots of excellent artists, but my favourites are Gabrielle, Daniel Kvamenn, Zupermaria, Chris Holsten and Sondre Justad. Thanks to these musics, I have been able to learn a lot of Norwegian, and being able to know and learn more about the Nordic culture as a whole.

(If you need a sweet and lovely moment in the middle of the chaos that is the world right now, then this is for you - a few weeks ago, Sondre asked people to send in video clips of loving moments to use in the making of this video, which dropped today. It’s a wonderful accompaniment to a beautiful song, and I have done my best to translate the lyrics into English for y’all, since I am the only person I know who speaks Norwegian* and I don’t want that to be the only reason you all do not watch the video!)

*I apologize if I’m way off base with any of these lyrics - I am an American who speaks a loose version of the Bergen dialect, and Sondre is from Lofoten in Northern Norway and speaks that region’s dialect, so this was a challenge, but it was also fun and I think I did okay!

**I confess my translation is interpretive here - the lyric here literally translates to “think that we should meet here” which I interpreted to mean “to think that we should meet here” but that felt awkwardly worded in English next to the rest of the line, so I interpreted it in a way that I felt got the wonder of the line across better in English.

***This line in Norwegian literally says “but not as strange as you” and I thought Sondre probably didn’t mean strange as in weird, but strange as in miraculous, a wonder, something amazing.

****I did my best with this line but I think I didn’t quiiiiiiiite get it.
