Taz: Would you -- please explain to me what I’m looking at in your living room?
Riley: I thought you’d recognize your own kids.
Prelude: Oh, hey, Dad. Nice of you to finally show up.

Buck: Don’t think I ain’t talked to ‘em about it--
Sonata: Oh, I’m sure you have.
Buck: Mm-hmm. Mina said she and Jefferson want a couple more...
Jefferson [off, to Mina]: You told him what, now? Ain’t four enough--
Mina [off]: I was joking, babe--
Prelude: [coughing] So, getting back on track -- our, uh, next question?

Prelude: Not a damn thing, really?
Buck: For real. Not a damn–
Sonata: That is not what you were saying last night.
Prelude: Uh-oh. I sense some tension–
Sonata: He was just saying the doctors had to be wrong and we should definitely try for some more kids. How many more did you say you wanted? Fourteen?
Buck: [cough] Sixteen.
Sonata: Sixteen more kids. That’s what he’d change. More kids. I told him if he wants more babies to take care of, we can go back to fostering or he can talk to our boys about giving us more grandkids to babysit.

Buck and Sona- favorite current song and favorite song of all time?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prelude: Cait over at @frost-rainbowcy wants to know – what are your all-time favorite songs, and what’s your current jam?
Sonata: Oh, that’s easy. All-time fave, definitely “Need You Now.” Current favorite… I don’t know, I’ve kind of been feeling Kesha’s “Hunt You Down” lately.
Prelude: Kesha, really? Hm. Wouldn’t have guessed that one… Buck? What about you?
Buck: Well, “Ticks” is usually my go-to karaoke jam–
Sonata: Of course it is. You literally asked if you could check me for ticks as a pick-up line the first time we met.
Buck: [laughing] Did I? Sounds about right. Anyway, current favorite – it ain’t a new song, but “Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer” is always first on my poolside playlist. Good summer drinkin’ song, y’know?
Prelude: Summer drinking songs are always the best songs. I may have to swing by your pool sometime and check out the rest of that playlist. Thanks for your time, guys!

Buck - if you could change one thing about your life what would you change?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buck: Yeah. Focused. Got it.
Prelude: Okay. So, first question’s actually just for you, Buck – we’ve got another call from @pixiegarden – Nika wants to know, if you could change one thing about your life… what would that be?
Buck: You mean… besides Ellie still bein’ with us? ‘Cause I feel like that’s a given.
Prelude: Oh – right, of course. So – yes. Besides… besides that, if you could change one thing, what–
Buck: Not a damn thing.

Buck and Sonata - Do you guys still keep in touch with any of your foster kids? -Joe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prelude: Sticking to the current theme – Joe over at @prismaticpotentia wants to know if you guys keep in touch with any of your foster kids.
Buck: Sure do.
Prelude: Yeah?
Sonata: Mm-hmm. We throw a big pool party for any of them who want to come every summer. Not all of them come, but the ones that were with us the longest do, and some of them bring their own families and kids. It’s a pretty good time.
Prelude: And I’ve never been invited because…
Buck: You ain’t one of our kids.
Prelude: …valid point. All right, guys, we’ve got one more question for you before I turn you loose…

This is probably an odd question, but have you ever thought of how things would have turned out in the story if certain events hadn't happened? Just any in general - big or small?
Hey! I don’t think it’s an odd question at all -- this is actually something I think about a lot! Just the other day I was having a conversation along these lines with @pixiegarden. :)
I’m getting to explore a few of those small changes you’re talking about in the rewrite I’m working on -- the basic structure and the Big Events(TM) are there, but some little details are changing along the way, and it’s interesting to see how dynamics are shifting just with a few minor tweaks.
There are so many things that could have changed and could have made big differences in the story, but a few of the “key points” for each generation and how I think they might have made things turn out a little differently are below the cut!
What if Taz hadn’t cheated on Gretta, or at least been honest about his affair with Adia and they’d been able to work things out?For one -- they would have raised Cadence together, and had Nocturne and Prelude a lot sooner. Taz and Gretta probably would have bought a house together, and Nick would have never been Taz’s next door neighbor -- potentially meaning Cadence would never have kissed him (she probably wouldn’t have been bold enough to do it during a lesson in her own house, especially with a younger brother and sister likely in the next room). And on the note of Cadence and Nick...
What if Cadence hadn’t kissed Nick in his apartment? It’s likely that Nick would never have known about Cadence’s crush. His reaction following the kiss suggests that he had feelings for Cadence before she kissed him -- but that he had never planned on acting on them. It’s possible that without the kiss, neither of them would have voiced their feelings, and their their mutual attraction would have eventually fizzled out, leading them to go their separate ways and both meet other people.
What if Sonata and Jacob hadn’t cheated on each other?Sonata sleeping with Buck, while a bad decision, was not necessarily a catalyst for anything other than the end of her relationship with Jacob (which, since he also cheated on her, still would likely have ended). Jacob and Adi’s relationship, however, was arguably the start of the events that led to Adi’s death -- Jacob’s involvement with the Vice-Korolyov case and investigation of Avarice led to his murder, which in turn led to Adi’s attempt to bring down her grandmother’s company and her death.Prior to Adi’s involvement with Jacob, she had a close (albeit manipulative) relationship with her grandmother. It’s likely that without her relationship with Jacob, Adi would have continued to be a leading figure in Korolyov Industries.
What if Ellie hadn’t gone to that party with Flan?Well, probably the most obvious change -- she would never have gotten pregnant with Toccata. She would have finished high school with her brothers and likely would have started dating Nat much sooner, as he had been working up the courage to ask her out at the party -- they would have settled down and started a family sooner; but since Ellie’s death wasn’t the result of anyone’s direct actions, she still would have left Nat a widower and single dad.The other side of Ellie going to the party is her involvement with Aidan. Since Toccata didn’t exist, he wouldn’t have attempted to pursue a relationship with his daughter. He may still have gotten a job with Korolyovs, and may still have had a relationship with Mina -- and that relationship is likely to have still been unhealthy -- but his aggressive insistence that Mina knew where Nat was hiding Toccata is what led to her killing him (and then fleeing to Jefferson’s).
What if Fugue had handed everything over to the Vices to begin with?Faspen wouldn’t exist. That’s it, that’s the most important thing that would have changed.
If there were any particular events (or anything else at all) you were wondering about, feel free to hit me up with more questions! :)

And his family had plenty to celebrate, as Buck and Sonata renewed their vows in a backyard ceremony.
Fugue’s family was overjoyed to see him at the event, and he spent the afternoon surrounded by aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents full of hugs and kisses and prying questions --  what happened to his eye? Who was the girl? Was he home for good? What would happen to Korolyov Industries?

The afternoon wore on and the guests trickled out, and Fugue and Aspen were among the last to leave, sitting with their grandparents well into the night until nearly all the other guests had left.

Dax: Why do you want me to officiate, exactly?
Sona: You can perform marriages at sea, right? We can put a boat in the pool and stand on it and that counts, right?
Dax: Mama, I’m a senator, not a ship captain--
Sona: I’m kidding. You don’t even have to be ordained, it’s not an official ceremony. You just have to stand up and say a few words, and... to be honest, you’re the most articulate child we have, so--
Jefferson [off, offended]: Hey!!

okay i have thought of a thing. If Dex is mayor, is he hiding who his parents are? like idk about you but I am fairly certain I can look up any politicians life history a vague life history and get an idea of where they came from, so now i am super curious about what dex is telling people
WOW this response got long. But the answer to this and your comment about Sonata and Buck are both under the cut!
Even though Dax was adopted by Sonata and Buck as an infant, he kept the Dekresh-Korolyov surname, so he isn’t exactly hiding who his parents were. Most biographical information available on him describes him as “the son of a young police officer tragically killed in the line of duty and a wealthy heiress who was the victim of a tragic accident, adopted by renowned musicians and philanthropists Buck and Sonata Maguire.” (The Maguires were later known for opening their home to foster children throughout the years.)
Although the Korolyov name generally has a negative connotation to it, his closest living relative with the name is his grandfather Nick, who has always made a point to distance himself from the family and (until very recently) did not associate with his family’s business.
While Vice Corp and Korolyov Industries both provided money to back Dax’s initial campaign, once he was in office, Dax quickly became one of the most popular elected officials San Myshuno had ever seen in his own right (and tried to terminate his connection to both companies after Avarice’s publicity stunt) -- but the Vices rigged the approval polls and his ratings took a nosedive, threatening his chances at future elections, and he was forced to reconsider.
@exi-sim-stial replied to your photoset “Wisteria: See? Didn’t I tell you she does a great show?? Oleander: I...”
you know what would be scandalous, if sona and buck went public with their relationship
Buck and Sona were pretty public with their relationship from the start (but presented it very differently in the spotlight than in private to fit with their respective public images -- Buck the wild party boy, finally tied down by the Sweet Southern Sonata, the bubbly southern belle who’d finally claimed his heart) -- however, as Charity noted to Taz, much of the public assumed their relationship was just for show.
With the media still screaming about how Buck had ruined his own career by firing his manager, there wasn’t much fanfare for a quiet courthouse wedding (that they’d even neglected to invite their own families to). It was never explicitly stated in the story, but Sonata took a few years off from performing to raise her kids and support her family in the wake of several deaths (but did make public appearances with her husband at awards shows and other Fancy Formal Events(tm), and would often get Taz and/or Gretta to babysit). Sonata did eventually go back to recording and performing new music but by that time, her marriage to Buck (whose career had still not recovered) was old news, and while their relationship/marriage was never exactly a secret from the public, it never made a huge scandalous splash after their initial “for show” relationship.

24 for Jefferson, Sona, and Cadence :)
24. What is their sleeping pattern like? Do they snore? What do they like to sleep on? A soft or hard mattress?
Jefferson’s lack of a “real job” combined with his anxiety keeping him up most nights gives him a pretty haphazard sleep schedule — but when he does sleep, he’s able to fall asleep anywhere. If he does happen to catch some zzz’s in a bed, he likes to sprawl out over the entire mattress (much to Mina’s annoyance), and snores loud enough to wake the dead if he’s sleeping on his back.
Sona is a bit of a night owl, but consistently gets 8-10 hours. She prefers a firmer mattress and likes to sleep on the left side of the bed.
Cadence’s sleep schedule is fairly inconsistent but not nearly as all over the place as Jefferson’s. Like Sona, she prefers a firmer mattress, but is just as content sleeping on the couch as she is in bed, and falls asleep in front of the TV more often than not (usually to reruns of TWD).

49 for Gretta, Sona, Jefferson and Taz?
49. What is their most valued object? Are they sentimental? Is there something they have to take everywhere with them?
Gretta isn’t as sentimental as you’d expect, preferring to enjoy the time she has with the people and things she loves in the moment rather than hanging on to the past. She does, however, have a small collection of Adia’s paintings that she and Taz hung up in the lounge that are her most prized possession.
Sona is definitely the sentimental type and keeps E V E R Y T H I N G. Buck is constantly having to remind her that, “no, sweetpea, we don’t need Dax’s report card from third grade,” or “shug, ain’t it time to throw out Jefferson’s old retainer?”
Jefferson is pretty sentimental too (but not quite as bad as his mom). Growing up, his most prized possession was his extensive collection of beanies (given to him by his Grandma Cadence), but since his sister’s death, his most valued object has become an old friendship bracelet Ellie made for him when they were kids (that he was always too embarrassed to wear in elementary school).
Taz is (perhaps unsurprisingly) not very sentimental when it comes to his possessions. He’ smuch more concerned with having the latest gadget or the nicest car than hanging on to some ratty old blanket or trinket. (The one thing he is sentimental about, though, is the unpublished draft of Adia’s second novel that she never told anyone about, that he keeps on his nightstand.)
Thanks for the ask! Send more?

Dax: [sigh] Look, they were just trying to send a message. They just wanted to make sure we all know who’s still in control here. It’s fine. It’s over. A few more days, and I’m going back out there. It’s like you said, Mom, we can’t just sit back and let something else bad happen, and I’m going to make sure it doesn’t.
Sona: What, by just doing whatever they want you to?
Dax: If that’s what it takes... yes.
Buck: Dax...
Dax: It’s fine, Dad. Really. I knew from the beginning that this wouldn’t be easy. Do I wish things were different? Sure, but they aren’t. So I’m handling it in the best way I know how.
Sona: I just... wish there was another way.
Dax: Well, when you figure it out, Mom, you let me know.
