Ghost circus (Dick/Danny) Soulmate au

In dc universe, the first sentence your soulmate says to you is tattooed on your skin (if you're injured, it appears in the same place on top of your scar don't worry).

In dp universe however, you have a birthmark in a shape or a picture that tell you about your soulmate. Maybe a football for a football player or an instrument (or fifteen if your soulmate is an overachiever, you never can be sure). Maybe a logo of their favorite movie idk. But Danny, practically growing up in a lab that mainly studies ectoplasm in a town that is the richest ectoplasm spot in the world, has a weird mark: a robin egg that changes with time. As he grows up, it changes to a red-yellow-green baby bird and so on.

What I want to say is, Dick meets Danny who is a dimension traveler (probably doing Clockwork's a favor or investigating the Lazarus Pits) and hears him say his soulmate's sentence but when he responds Danny just doesn't react and goes on his way. Dick is like "am I not his soulmate? Can it be one way??" Just angst and existential crisis as you do.

Then, Danny is doing something and the batfam appears. Maybe he's fighting a rogue? And Danny sees Nightwing. And he knows that the vigilante reminds him of something, a blue-black bird of his own. Wait.

"Are you my soulmate?" Danny asks.

"HOW DO YOU KNOW?" Nightwing loses his mind.

Cue teasing siblings ("that has to be the shortest time someone uses to learn your secret identity.") and overprotective Batdad trying to investigate this boy/man who takes down the rogue and the goons like it was nothing even before the bats arrived on the scene.

Thank you for opening my eyes! Damian has been one of my favorite characters for over a year, but I didn't read/watch much of him because of school, life (and probably an executive dysfunction in the mix).

out of my most recent ones, meringue's definitely up there. out of everyone in the overdrive cast, she's the one i had the most fun designing from start to finish. personality wise she's also a bit of a far cry from the characters i typically make, but i think that's ultimately a good thing. this girl could kill me and i'd thank her.

i wish i could go into the specifics of why she's my favorite, but it's overdrive spoilers so you guys'll just have to wait :p

out of All of my OCs though? definitely this guy here. i cooked up cicero during the height of the pandemic and he's been occupying my brain like a parasite ever since. technically he's a DnD character i've been keeping on hand in case i ever end up being a player in another campaign someday, but i like tossing that guy into situations on my own. just for fun.

can someone please banish this writer's block for me 😫

it's the worst i've had in such a long time and i've tried to be patient with it but it's been fucking weeks now. i want to write so much but whenever i try they just feel like words on a page. every evening i sit down and rearrange them a little here and there and add some new ones, but they all just feel empty and and shit and my brain feels totally devoid of the creative spark i need to make everything come to life.

i know in large part it's my perfectionism getting in the way, but i don't know how to break through it. i don't know how to feel connected to my writing again. i don't know how to shift this fear of not being good enough that surges up every time i pick up a pen.

it's something that's always been there - but usually it at least comes in waves, or my love of what i'm creating is big enough to muffle it. right now, it's all i can hear. my inspiration has been totally drowned out by it. and i hate it so, so much. the fact that i can't access the one thing that brings me the kind of solace and joy and escapism i can't get anywhere else and is so vital to my soul. that i am blocking myself from engaging in the one thing that makes me feel like me.

i just feel so stuck and so lost and i miss being in that creative headspace so much it’s like a physical pain. it feels like part of me is missing, and it terrifies me that i don't know how to get it back.

Logging the bluejay that bullies my cats. Do you think there s any parallels to Brutus and Cleopatra, after they each have to bury Cassius and Mark Anthony?

oh for sure! I've written a little about the narrative comparisons between the two pairs with regards to HBO Rome.

I have less thoughts about antony and cleopatra in a historical kind of way, but it is interesting that they're like. a decayed narrative parallel to brutus and cassius in the greater theater of history (ends of an era). cassius and antony (gladiators, baby!) both commit suicide, but antony's suicide gets real fucked up: he's straight up denied a clean end to his own life. on the other hand, cleopatra and brutus are such hard opposites to each other, both in politic and reception, that it's difficult to find themes that work for them both the way that antony and cassius have, without discussing much broader subjects like transitional time periods.

but in a way. cleopatra and antony also fulfill the statesman-gladiator pairing. so. there might be something there.
